Eight hospitals to treat Ebola cases in the state Albany. Gov. Cuomo named a list of hospitals that will be prepared to intake Ebola patients. New York is running surprise drills to prepare hospitals for possible Ebola patients and has designated eight medical centers to treat any cases of the disease diagnosed in the state, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday. Cuomo said authorities were erring on the side on caution in their preparations, and that the public’s “anxiety is higher than the probability” of an Ebola outbreak in New York. Even so, the governor said he would not be surprised if a case cropped up in New York, given the high number of people who visit or travel through the state. All hospitals in New York are being trained to recognize potential Ebola cases in their emergency rooms and to respond appropriately, said New York Health Commissioner Howard Zucker. REUTERS

Judge finds Trump liable for unlicensed school Donald Trump is personally liable for operating a for-profit investment school without the required license, a judge ruled in a lawsuit brought
by the New York attorney general against the real estate entrepreneur. New York state Supreme Court Justice Cynthia Kern said he was notified by the state in 2005 that his Trump Entrepreneur Initiative — known as Trump University until 2010 — was in violation of state education law.
“It is undisputed that Mr. Trump never complied with the licensing requirements,” Kern wrote. Damages will be determined later. Jeffrey Goldman, an attorney for Trump, said the ruling was mistaken, but ultimately little if any damages would be awarded.

The decision came in an ongoing lawsuit filed last year by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman that accuses Trump of misleading more than 5,000 people who paid between $1,495 and $35,000 to learn Trump’s real estate investment techniques. REUTERS

Study: Most Airbnb listings are ‘illegal’ Manhattan. The attorney general released a report saying that an overwhelming amount of Airbnb rentals are against the law. A new report on the apartment-sharing website Airbnb by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has concluded some 72 percent of Airbnb rentals violated New York law. The report, called “Airbnb in the City, is based on subpoenaed data on Airbnb bookings from January 2010 to June 2014, given to the attorney general’s office. Among the key findings of the report are 25,532 of a total 35,354 “private, short-term listings violated either city or state multiple dwelling or zoning laws. According to the report, Airbnb hosts collected about $304 million from the “illegal listings, and the company pocketed about $40 million. “That host is not on our site, Airbnb spokesman Nick Papas wrote in an email to Metro on New York

Police talk down man from off of building
Police persuaded a man perched on the ledge of a building near Times Square to step back, after his threat to jump led to traffic being closed for two hours on Thursday afternoon, officials said. The man, who was not identified, had sat down at the edge of the building overlooking the Madame Tussauds wax museum, on 42nd Street between 7th and 8th avenues, a spokesman with the NYPD said. The man, who was in his 30s, was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for psychological

Apple Inc.’s new electronic payments service will launch on Monday, after the iPhone maker signed up another 500 banks to support a feature that competes with eBay’s PayPal and other online systems. CEO Tim Cook, speaking Thursday at an event at which Apple unveiled holiday-season tablets, also said developers were beginning to design apps for its upcoming Watch, the company’s first new device since the iPad in 2010. Apple’s iPad Air 2 is a faster, slimmer device, tacking on modest improvements such as a fingerprint sensor to its mainstay
tablet in time for what is expected to be a hotly contested holiday season for mobile devices. Preorders start Friday for the larger iPad Air 2, priced at $499 and up, with shipping beginning next week. The smaller iPad mini 3 will be about $100 cheaper. Marketing chief Phil Schiller, calling the tablet the world’s slimmest, described several new features such as an anti-reflective screen and confirmed the inclusion of the “Touch ID” sensor, already available on the latest iPhones. Apple might struggle, however, to arouse the same passion for tablets as in past years among consumers faced with an abundance of hand-held, touchscreen devices. Also in Thursday’s lineup was a new iMac with a “retina” or high-end display.

Americans say they’re avoiding international air travel due to Ebola Nearly half of Americans are so concerned about the Ebola outbreak they are avoiding international air travel, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Thursday.
The poll results come as health officials said the second nurse infected at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas had flown from Ohio to Texas with a slight fever the day before she was diagnosed. The Reuters/Ipsos poll, which surveyed 1,577 Americans 18 or older online, found nearly 80 percent were concerned about the Ebola outbreak,
Only 19 percent of those surveyed said they were unconcerned by the epidemic, which has killed at least 4,493 people, predominantly in West Africa. Among those surveyed, 79 percent said that if there were an outbreak of Ebola in the United States, they would be very or somewhat likely to avoid international air travel.

Congressional lawmakers criticized the government’s response to Ebola in the United States on Thursday as some called for a ban on travel from epidemic-stricken West Africa at a congressional hearing probing efforts to contain the virus. Federal Aviation Administration chief Michael Huerta told reporters separately that the United States is assessing whether to issue a travel ban “on a day-to-day basis” but that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had determined that a ban would not address the challenges posed by Ebola. The congressional hearing comes as concerns about the virus in the United States are accelerating. Several schools in Ohio and Texas were closed after concerns that a nurse with Ebola traveled on a plane with people with ties to the schools. The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) said
it would take over the care of the first Texas nurse diagnosed with Ebola, Nina Pham, who contracted the virus while treating a man from Liberia who later died. Lawmakers focused questions and pointed criticism at the hearing on CDC chief Dr. Thomas Frieden. “The administration did not act fast enough in responding in Texas,” Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley of Iowa told the hearing. Several Republicans said flights from West Africa, where the virus is widespread, should be stopped. “I predict you’re going to put on or the president’s going to put on travel restrictions,” Republican Rep. Billy Long of Missouri told Frieden during the hearing. “I don’t know if it’s going to be today or tomorrow or two weeks or a month from now. But I think that they’re coming, and I think sooner rather than later.” Frieden argued, as he has before, that closing U.S. borders would not work and would leave the country less able to track people with Ebola entering. Moreover, cutting flights to Africa would hit the U.S. ability to stop the virus at its source, he said. REUTERS

This is what we called each other on!” The plastic was yellowing. The springy cords were cracked. But those pieces of yester-tech transported me back to days when the future seemed endless and bright. My eyes misted as I held a receiver to my ear. “We can’t throw these out,” I said. “Yes, we can,” Linda responded. “And if you keep holding on to all this crap, you’ll be the next thing to go.” Living in the past is tempting. Tullahoma police chief Paul Blackwell said the man — Terry Wayne McCullough, 59 — is a known troublemaker but that the threats had to be treated seriously. “Did CDC officials want to mishandle this? Were they just lazy? I doubt it. They simply bet that past practices in meeting biological threats could keep us safe in the present. And they were wrong.” things turn out, problems that were horribly daunting at the time can appear marvelously benign. There is nothing wrong with this. But when we rely too much on yesterday’s preamble to guide today’s practices, we run the risk of a dangerous collision with an ever-changing world. And this appears to have happened with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the dreaded disease Ebola. In recent weeks, the CDC assured us all that
proper steps were being taken to keep Ebola out of America, that hospitals were well-prepared and that chances of it spreading were virtually nil. All of which now appears to have been hopelessly optimistic. Did CDC officials want to mishandle this? Were they just lazy? I doubt it. They simply bet that past practices in meeting biological threats could keep us safe in the present. And they were wrong. To be sure, Ebola is not wracking the population and may yet be contained to a few cases. There is no reason for panic. But there is a lesson about adaptation and evolution here; about letting go of past triumphs and focusing on future challenges. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some old phones to throw away.

The comments by White House spokesman Josh Earnest were in line with what economic analysts have been say-
ing about recent stock market gyrations. U.S. stocks tumbled on Thursday, after the S&P 500 closed at its lowest in six months, on continued concerns about weak global demand and its potential impact on the U.S. economy and businesses. FBI director: New cell phone features could thwart murder probes Investigations. In the past, the FBI has been able to get info stored on cell phones with a court order.
FBI Director James Comey on Thursday made his strongest comments yet about encryption features built into new cell phones by Google Inc. and Apple Inc., warning they could hurt law enforcement efforts to crack homicide and child exploitation cases. Speaking before an audience at the Brookings Institution, Comey said the new phones, which limit the ability for the companies themselves to

access data stored on the units, have “the potential to create a black hole for law enforcement.” The director said FBI agents have come across a growing number of cases in which they believe evidence sat on a phone or a laptop that they were
unable to crack. “If this becomes the norm, I suggest to you that homicide cases could be stalled, suspects walked free, child exploitation not discovered and prosecuted,” he said. Comey also urged Congress to update the law that governs law enforcement’s ability to intercept communications, which was enacted two decades ago. In his speech, he gave examples of cases that agents were able to piece together from evidence contained on cell phones, including against a Louisiana man who was convicted of murdering a 12-year-old boy and a drug trafficking ring in Kansas City. Vatican to limit Sistine Chapel visitors to protect fragile frescoes The Vatican will restrict the number of visitors to the Sistine Chapel to six million a year to protect Michelangelo’s delicate frescoes from damage caused by ever-growing crowds of tourists, an official said on Thursday. Visitors to the chapel — where popes are elected in secret conclaves — can reach 20,000 a day in summer, with up to 2,000 people inside at a time. Dust brought in from outside, body sweat and carbon dioxide pose a major risk to the ceiling frescoes, which are more than 500 years old. REUTERS

Oscar Pistorius will be committed to the hospital wing of one of South Africa’s toughest prisons if the double-amputee Olympic track star is sentenced to jail time for killing his girlfriend, the head of the prison service said on Thursday. On the fourth day of Pistorius’ sentencing hearing, Zach Modise, who has worked in the prison service for 35 years, was questioned by the defense about conditions at the Pretoria Central Prison, Pistorius’ most likely destination because of its disabled facilities. The jail was the execution site of dozens of black political activists by South Africa’s apartheid government, which handed over power after the election of Nelson Mandela in 1994. It is also the home of apartheid death squad leader Eugene de Kock, known as “Prime Evil,” and is known for a vicious gang culture. Beatings, male rape and murder cases have been reported there in South African

media. However, Modise said the reality of the prison was a long way from the popular perception and said Pistorius’ disability — his lower legs were amputated as a baby — would ensure he was kept in a separate wing. Pressed to give details about the prison’s population and facilities for the disabled, Modise conceded that there was only one resident doctor for every 7,000 inmates. Modise said Pistorius would have access to a cell of his own and that a suitability test would be conducted to determine the athlete’s particular needs. On Tuesday probation officer Annette Vergeer, testifying for the defense, said prison would “break” Pistorius because of his disability and psychological problems. Throughout the sentencing hearing, the defense has been fighting to keep the 27-year-old out of jail, citing his disability as a reason. REUTERS

The most basic rule of weight loss is wrong Diets. How long it takes you to lose weight has no effect on long-term results.
Lose weight in the way that’s sustainable for you. / FUSE Guidelines
Why slower weight loss is the golden rule “Around the world, most dietitians advise patients to lose weight gradually because they believe the quicker you
lose it, the quicker it will be regained,” Proietto said. “This is based on the belief that obesity is largely due to poor lifestyle, so if you lose weight gradually it gives you time to change your habits and hence keep the weight off.”
Contradicting long-standing advice from doctors and nutritionists worldwide, a new study found that effective weight loss isn’t determined by how quickly you burn fat. Dr. Joseph Proietto and his team at the University of Melbourne established that slow and steady weight loss does not reduce the amount or rate of weight regain when compared to rapid weight reduction.
Methodology and results The scientists monitored
200 obese adults (BMI 30–45) who were randomly assigned to either a 12-week rapid weight loss program on a very low calorie diet (450–800 calories per day); or a 36-week gradual weight loss program that reduced participants’ calories by 500 per day, in line with current dietary weight loss guidelines. Participants who lost more than 12.5 percent of their body weight were then placed on a weight-maintenance diet for three years. The participants who lost weight faster were more likely to achieve their goal: 81 percent, compared to 50 percent of the slow-burn group. More surprisingly, the researchers found that weight regain was similar — around 71 percent — in both groups after the subsequent weight maintenance period.
Why the diets had different outcomes Limiting carbohydrates as part of a very low calorie diet can promote a greater feeling of fullness by inducing ketosis: a metabolic state that forces the body to burn fat, leading to the production of ketones, the broken-down products of fat burning that are known to suppress hunger. Participants might also be more motivated to continue with the diet if they see rapid results. Scientists at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana added: “Efforts to curb the speed of initial weight loss might hinder [patients’] ultimate weight loss success.” ELODIE NOEL, MWN @metronewyork
Advice
The danger of diets Very low calorie diets should always be started under the supervision of qualified experts, as they are aware of the most efficient methods to provide adequate protein and essential micronutrients while maintaining patients’ weight loss goals.

Celebs reaching another stage in their careers Theater. Here are just six of the big screen talents hitting 42nd Street this season. There’s no such thing as a straight-up “stage actor” anymore. Yes, many successful stage stars pack up their Broadwayvetted legitimacy and take a swing at making real money in movies and on TV — who can blame them? But there are also many screen stars going the other way — trying to revamp their careers, show off their range or fill their time between shoots
— popping in and out of the theater scene as they see fit. And that means we’re seeing more and more film and television personas coming to New York City to prove they’ve got what it takes — live, eight times a week. The fall/winter season of 20142015 is proof of that, spilling over with householdname talent onstage. We barely have the space to write about all of the amazing actors you can catch, but here are six (and a few bonuses) that you’ll definitely want to have on your radar. MICHAEL BRACKEN and T. MICHELLE MURPHY letters@metro.us
2 CULTURE Onstage
The next wave
It’s selfie time for the extremely overqualified cast of “It’s Only a Play.” / F. SCOTT SCHAFER
Rupert Grint We watched him grow up as Ron Weasley in eight “Harry Potter” movies, and now he’s crossed the pond to establish a creative beachhead on American soil. Rupert Grint flexes his comedic muscles
in his Broadway debut as a highly theatrical director in “It’s Only a Play,” which opened Oct. 9. He’ll be put to the test against a coterie of established names, including Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Megan Mullally and Stockard Channing.
Two other big stars from television and film are soon taking the stage — but not in new plays. On Thursday, Michael C. Hall took over for Andrew Rannells (who replaced Neil Patrick Harris) in the Broadway premiere of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” Meanwhile, Emma Stone joins Alan Cumming onstage as Sally Bowles in “Cabaret” starting Nov. 11.
Offstage
The rock star Onstage musically but not physically, Broadway first-timer and 16-time Grammy winner Sting has written the music and lyrics for “The Last Ship,” a tale of the shipyards in working-class England inspired by his own childhood. If the Chicago critics are to be believed, this is one to watch.
Michael Cera
Hugh Jackman
Bradley Cooper
Glenn Close
James Earl Jones
Michael Cera has carved a niche for himself as an awkward adolescent onscreen. Now he’s flexing that muscle with his Broadway debut in “This Is Our Youth,” which opened Sept. 11. He plays a nervous young man trying to find his footing (and impress his “cool” friends, played by Kieran Culkin and Tavi Gevinson) in 1980s NYC.
While Hugh Jackman received a Tony Award for 2003’s “The Boy from Oz,” the last time he was in a drama on Broadway (with “A Steady Rain”), the critical reaction was tepid. Rumor has it that “The River,” which opens Nov. 16, will provide him with a sturdier vehicle to display his dramatic, non-musical acting chops.
Two-time Oscar nom Bradley Cooper is back on Broadway for the first time since 2006’s “Three Days of Rain” (pictured). Now he’s foregoing his leadingman looks to play a sideshow freak in “The Elephant Man.” Cooper may be going for a Tony, which the play has won before. See how his acting holds up without his handsome face starting Dec. 7.
Other than a fleeting guest star stint in 2003 (“The Play What I Wrote”), Broadway royalty Glenn Close hasn’t appeared on the New York stage since 1995 (in “Sunset Boulevard,” pictured). Starting Nov. 20, she stars in a revival of “A Delicate Balance.” Her return from exile is much anticipated as she goes for Tony Award No. 4.
Perhaps best known as the chilling voice of Darth Vader, James Earl Jones has a string of Broadway credits — and Tony Awards to go with them. He’s now playing the patriarch of a wacky family in the Pulitzer Prize-winning “You Can’t Take It with You” (alongside Rose Byrne, who’s making her debut on the Great White Way). The show opened on Sept. 28.
Off-Broadway
The third act And then there’s America Ferrera, eschewing the bright lights of Broadway (and her “Ugly Betty” persona) for the intimacy of offBroadway. She stars in “Lips Together, Teeth Apart,” her third off-Broadway outing, starting Nov. 5. It’s now in previews.

Just across the Hudson in Jersey City, art lovers can access over 700 works in more than 120 venues this weekend as part of the Jersey City Artist Studio Tour. Now in its 24th year, one of New Jersey’s largest cultural events is bigger than ever and expecting thousands of visitors — many of whom come from NYC (all art spots are within walking distance of the PATH). You can expect paintings, photography and even performances from a wide array of talented voices. The studios are open to the public for free on Oct. 18-19 from noon to 6 p.m. For a complete list of participants and locations, visit www.thejcast.com. T. MICHELLE MURPHY
Appropriation artist Richard Prince is back at his controversial antics again with a series of “New Paintings.” Well, they’re “paintings” in that they’re ink-jet prints, and they’re “new” in the sense that these are Instagram photos taken by other people. If the sheer absurdity of seeing the best selfies of everyone’s favorite social-media app in an art gallery is not enough, here are three other reasons you cannot miss “New Paintings.” DANIELLE KALAMARAS @metronewyork letters@metro.us
For the rousing debate of what qualifies as modern art
For bringing voyeurism from website to art gallery
For the utter excitement of seeing someone you follow
These paintings are not strictly a product of Prince’s artistic genius. The “New Paintings” are not even painted by the artist himself, but are ink-jet prints created from Instagram screenshots. Is this art or is this copyright infringement? Prince is not new to legal controversy — he was sued in 2013 by photographer Patrick Cariou, who claimed Prince unrightfully appropriated his art. Prince came out of court victorious, which only added to his work’s caustic mystique.
Scrolling through an app filled with brunch pics and self-portraits is nothing more than another commute to work. But seeing shameless selfies of half-nude Instagram stars in an art gallery is a perfect parody of pop-culture. Party portraits of tattoo-clad women and Kate Moss seductively splayed out on a motorcycle are captured for posterity in gallery-size proportions.
Part of the fun is sneaking a peek at the extraordinary lifestyles of the Internet famous. Three users we knew on sight were China Chow, an actress and model, Sky Ferreira, the starlet of indie rock, and Richard Prince himself — whose Instagram pic was, fittingly, a photo of someone else he did not even take. Seeing the 903 likes karleyslutever (writer Karley Sciortino) received for her provocative shot of a necklace is shocking, and yet very indicative of our culture.

Satire. ‘Dear White People’ is a portrait so sharp it draws blood

In this deserving Sundance hit, black students at a mostly white Ivy League university discover that a group of white students have decided to throw a black-themed party. The lowdown: Despite its title, “Dear White People” isn’t really about white racism, though there’s plenty of that. It’s about the diversity of its black characters, people often lumped into one or at best two groups in movies and by the media. A razorsharp satire that often cuts deep, it digs into the variety of modern black life: the nerdy aspiring journo (Tyler James Williams) who’s otherized by the white heads of the college paper; the “angry black woman” (Tessa Thompson) who secretly likes Ingmar Bergman and Taylor Swift; the preppy (Brandon P. Hall) who amplifies his blackness for whites. No one’s the voice of

script is little more than an assortment of observations. They’re cogent observations, though, and he moves his ideas around like an expert general would move troops, slowly racheting up the tension until it erupts. It’s lazy, as Simiens has said, to compare this to Spike Lee; it’s closer to Robert Altman or early Milos Forman. But he shares with Lee a sincere need to include voices, even ones he doesn’t agree with, to create a real, necessary, refreshing dialogue.

There are about 40 types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that may affect an estimated 75% to 80% of males and females in their lifetime. For most, HPV will clear on its own. However, there’s no way to predict who will and won’t clear the virus. For those who don’t clear certain types, HPV could cause cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers in females and anal cancer and genital warts in both males and females. The CDC recommends routine vaccination for boys and girls ages 11 or 12 against HPV-related cancer and diseases. GARDASIL® [Human Papillomavirus Quadrivalent (Types 6, 11, 16, and 18) Vaccine, Recombinant] is the only HPV vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of HPV. In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 2 types of HPV that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, 70% of vaginal cancer cases, and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases. In males and females ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against about 80% of anal cancer cases and about 90% of genital warts cases.
THE CDC RECOMMENDS ROUTINE VACCINATION OF 11 OR 12 YEAR OLDS AGAINST HPV-RELATED CANCER AND DISEASES. THE TIME TO PROTECT THEM IS BEFORE EXPOSURE TO THE VIRUS.
GARDASIL may not fully protect everyone, nor will it protect against diseases caused by other HPV types or against diseases not caused by HPV. GARDASIL does not prevent all types of cervical cancer, so it’s important for women to continue routine cervical cancer screenings. GARDASIL does not treat cancer or genital warts. GARDASIL is given as 3 injections over 6 months.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Anyone who is allergic to the ingredients of GARDASIL, including those severely allergic to yeast, should not receive the vaccine. GARDASIL is not for women who are pregnant. The side effects include pain, swelling, itching, bruising, and redness at the injection site, headache, fever, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and fainting. Fainting can happen after getting GARDASIL. Sometimes people who faint can fall and hurt themselves. For this reason, your child’s health care professional may ask your child to sit or lie down for 15 minutes after he or she gets GARDASIL. Some people who faint might shake or become stiff. This may require evaluation or treatment by your child’s health care professional. Only a doctor or health care professional can decide if GARDASIL is right for your son or daughter. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

WWII picture. Brad Pitt kills Nazis again, only this time not for a laugh, in the amazing ‘Fury’ Having taken on the Third Reich in “Inglourious Basterds,” Brad Pitt does it again, this time as a tank sergeant whose crew heads off on a series of missions with a scaredy cat fresh fish (Logan Lerman) who needs toughening up. The lowdown: Let’s get this out of the way: “Fury” is not “Inglourious Basterds,” nor does it try to be. “Basterds” was a jokey, hyperviolent what-if that rewrote history. “Fury” is grounded in cold, brutal reality. And it’s arguably more violent: It smashes viewers’ faces into the unspeakable, forcing them to stare at heads impaled or blown up, abdomens popped like watermelons, chunks of face scattered about, limbs snapped off
by bullet fire that looks like lasers. Arguably more unpleasant is hanging with the crew: the type of loudmouth, inelegantly cussing ballbusters that frequent the punishing films of director David Ayer (writer of “Training Day” and director of “End of Watch” and “Sabotage”). Ayer’s films aren’t always fun to watch (or listen to), but “Fury” finally finds him coming close to being Sam Peckinpah, his obvious role model. This is a tough-guy weepie that understands that the machismo is all a front. The soldiers’ gruff act is a way of not only mentally steeling themselves for living during wartime, but as a way of surviving it. They have to be inhuman, have to act scarier and more in-

••••• humane than anyone else, because that’s how they’ll be able to kill the other people who feel the same way. At the same time it understands the thrill of it. This isn’t just another movie saying “war is hell,” or in this case a Boschian hellscape, but that war, if you fight it well, is addictive. MATT PRIGGE

‘Rudderless’ ••••• A grieving loner (Billy Crudup) discovers a box of sensitive songs written by his son, who died in a school shooting. When he starts playing them at open-mic nights, he gains a bandmate in an excitable musician (Anton Yelchin). The lowdown: There are four or five movies mashed into “Rudderless,” which begins with a school shooting, turns into a grief drama, then

adds a buddy comedy element, plus a musical one. It’s not boring; there are hairpin twists and one actual, shocking, very heavy,
deeply questionable third act revelation the film can’t remotely handle. It would seem cynical — the perfect Sundance movie — if it wasn’t nakedly earnest. The director is William H. Macy, who does his best to balance the tones. But they aren’t all good tones. The jokes tend to be broad, none more so than in Crudup’s battle with snooty neighbors, culminating in him literally crashing a regatta — an idea that plays like “Caddyshack” slipped into “In the Bedroom.” MATT PRIGGE

‘The Best of Me’ ••••• The death of a friend (Gerald McRaney) reunites two old ames (James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan), who recall their days as a high school Romeo and Juliet (Luke Bracey and Liana Liberato), torn apart by circumstances melodramatic even for novelist Nicholas Sparks. The lowdown: “The Best of Meâ€? is both your standard Sparks movie (hesitant romance, pretty locations,
an overqualiďŹ ed cast, crazy third-act twist), and more nuts than usual. More than one Sparks opus has tastelessly used the Iraq War as backdrop. This one opens with a Deepwater Horizon-esque oil rig disaster. It quickly forgets about it — it’s just there to extract tears — and moves to nuttier environs, always trying harder than it needs to. Its ripped, sensitive lead doesn’t just come from the other side of the tracks; he hails from a family of white trash drug dealers (led by an enjoyably hammy
Aww, don’t James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan look cute in “The Best of Me? / GEMMA LAMANA
Sean Bridgers). There’s gunplay, a scene where the villain destroys someone’s garden and, because half of this is set in 1992, the sounds of Tag Team. (It’s fun hearing the fragile nature of a Nicholas Sparks movie suddenly broken by “Whoomp! (There It Is).â€?) As corn, “The Best of Meâ€? doesn’t disappoint. (Two decades ago director Michael Homan made fun of this kind of thing in “Soapdish.â€? Here he just succumbs to the style.) It has a perverse integrity, playing every winsome stare and I’m-gonna-takemy-shirt-o moment with powerful sincerity. There’s even some truly impressive contortions during the sex scenes, with the actors launching into gymnastic positions to hide their naughty bits from the camera. There’s not much more than hairpin turns, though Marsden — who subbed in, alas, for the late Paul Walker — is enough of a pro to rise above the material while still doing his job. Meta-movie. Michael Keaton is a superhero again, sort of, in the acrobatic, dense ‘Birdman’ Michael Keaton plays a fading actor who once headlined a comic book franchise about a winged superhero and is now trying to mount a Broadway production of a Raymond Carver book. In real life, Keaton settled for a film by “Babelâ€? director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who makes it look like it was done in a single long take. The lowdown: “Birdmanâ€? is a playful, freewheeling, light-footed lark by one of cinema’s heaviest directors. It’s yet another Hollywood satire, this one more uncomfortable than most, forcing a former A-lister to confront his worst fears. This should be serious, self-pitying and technically grandiose. Instead it’s semi-serious, and more often goofy, while
the tour de force fake is more enjoyable than bewildering, with ever-heroic cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (“Children of Men) prowling after characters, switching actors mid-stream or circling around people locked in verbal combat. That it’s charming and busy is a good thing, because with any time to look around, we might notice how shallow it is. It’s not clear if Inarritu is even trying to be profound, which is strange: His previous films (“21 Grams, “Biutiful) are some of the most pompously fauxdeep in existence. Perhaps he does think this is all very astute; perhaps he’s sincere about surrounding Thomson with cliches (a disappointed daughter, ex-wife and current

Maybe he really thinks he’s sticking it to critics by including a moldy stereotype: a joyless, vengeful critic (Lindsay Duncan) who exists to be told her kind aren’t as good as the artists they write about. Q&A ELISABETH MOSS GOES INDIE The “Listen Up Philip” star enjoyed doing a movie about a bad relationship. In “Listen Up Philip,” Elisabeth Moss plays Ashley, a woman whose boyfriend (Jason Schwartzman) has let the arrival of his second novel turn him into a fullon jerk. The experience itself wasn’t unpleasant; she’s already reunited with low-budget writer/director Alex Ross Perry for the thriller “Queen of Earth.” So much of the press for this has involved what a jerk Schwartzman’s Philip is. But he sometimes seems faintly vulnerable. I knew Jason would bring humor and humanity. He
wanted him to be somebody you wanted to watch; he couldn’t be so miserable that you didn’t want to watch him. I remember saying to Jason, “I don’t know how to describe this to you, but you’re going to be fine. You’re so interesting to watch, and he’s such an interesting character. People are going to want to watch you do this.” Still, it’s not like your character is just a doormat. She has issues. We asked, “How are these two people together?” We don’t really show them
23
Girl on film Director Alex Ross Perry shot this on Super 16, and the camera is often pushed into people’s faces. Alex and [cinematographer] Sean Price Williams wanted it to be very mobile. They wanted it to look like “Husbands and Wives,” the Woody Allen film. There, the camera constantly moves and the actors are constantly moving. It really affected how we did those fight scenes. They’re constantly in movement, going from one room to the next, talking and walking.
Moss plays the jilted girlfriend of a hostile novelist in “Listen Up Philip,” out now. / TRIBECA FILM
happy. We realized there’s so much of Philip in Ashley: the way she can isolate herself, the way she’s independent and strong-willed. That’s probably what drew them together in the first place. The only difference is Ashley doesn’t carry that into her relationship. Philip does. Still, it’s hard imagining him ever been nice. He becomes more of an a—hole as he gets successful. But his misanthropic nature was probably attractive in the beginning. Because he is funny. He’s
an a—hole but not just in a dick-y way. He’s quite smart about it. That attracted her to him at first. And then it turns on her. She’s like, “It was funny when you were talking about other people, but now that you’re talking about me, this no longer works for me.” [Laughs]
Was Williams kind of like another actor? He’s 6 feet 4 inches tall, so he’s not exactly a man who can blend into the scenery easily. But you’d be surprised by how he can just shrink behind the wall. It was fun and different. Movies aren’t made like that anymore.

Logan Lerman receives some tough love from Brad Pitt in the WWII drama “Fury.” / GILES KEYTE

Logan Lerman really fought Brad Pitt
STUNNING . BRAD PITT IS TREMENDOUS.
“
‘FURY’ GRABS
YOU FROM THE FIRST SCENE AND NEVER LETS GO.” PETE R TRAVE RS
Interview. To prep for the WWII drama “Fury,” the young actor actually had to box his co-stars. To hear Logan Lerman and his “Fury” co-stars tell it, working for director David Ayer is its own brand of harrowing. Prep for the WWII tank drama started with a few weeks of boxing — the cast (Lerman, Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Michael Pena and Jon Bernthal) sparred with each other, and their director encouraged them to not hold back. When did you realize the training would involve boxing your co-stars? Right after I got the role, it was, “Now you’re going to start fighting.” And I was like, “All right, whatever.” It was pretty casual at first, and then the guys came in and we really started fighting each other. It got intense in there. I thought we were going to go in and it was going to be mostly
a workout, a “get to know ya” thing. And it was a total battle of the egos. It was just who was top dog and, “Now we’re going to fight each other and see who’s the dominant male.” That sounds like a terrifying work environment. It was tough. And I was the young guy, the inexperienced one in terms of … I guess fighting and things like that. So yeah, it was a pretty tough year. It was a tough year, man. Did you have any boxing experience going into that? None! And I broke a wrist earlier in the year, so I was weaker and it was just a really s---y time to be fighting people. But I learned a lot from that. At the end of the day, in retrospect, I appreciated it. But I’m not fighting anymore. I stopped doing it right after. Once we were done, I was like, “F— yes! This is over!” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

You and Brad are basically co-leads in this film, but he gets to be front and center on the poster. Yeah! Yeah, motherf —er. Look at that. Blurred me out, I’m out of focus, practically waving in the background. “Hey!” [Laughs] No, it’s cool. I’ve worked with big actors before, and then there’s Brad Pitt. There’s definitely more of a spotlight on the movie when Brad’s a part of it.

An open letter to FSU’s Jameis Winston Mr. Winston: I’ve been following your college football career at Florida State University as quarterback for the Seminoles. You have an incredible arm, and your insight into a defense’s secondary is enviable. You’re a Heisman Trophy winner — the youngest ever, actually — and have been expected to be a top pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. You should be proud, as your accomplishments on the field have been amazing. And just think: All you had to do to achieve your goals was work hard, practice every day, stay focused on your prize and sell your honor and humanity. Just in case you’ve been hiding behind the FSU Athletic Department’s deafening silence — or your lawyer’s rhetoric — you were accused of sexual assault in December 2012. Your accuser was a student at FSU and, according to witness accounts, she allegedly met you at the campus bar and headed back to your place with your

roommate Chris Casher and friend Ronald Darby, both FSU football players, too. And then, well, things get murky there, don’t they? (Although Walt Bogdanich at The New York Times did an outstanding job earlier this year outing the colossal legal joke-of-aninvestigation.) Although you might be an alleged* rapist, the cowards in your immediate circle might actually be
worse than you. These enablers, in my opinion — the police, the FSU Athletic Department and your friends — bore witness (even admitting that they recorded the alleged* assault as it happened), and received damning information (perhaps even proof) of the acts that shattered the pride and physical security of a young woman. The most fascinating thing is what I think you
must believe about yourself. You probably think you have power. You’re under the assumption that because you can steal soda, shoplift seafood, destroy property or scream misogynistic obscenities without the slightest consequence, that you are an important figure. Let me explain the truth: You’ve been afforded that power because of your talent. You don’t actually have power; the people who are making
money off your talent have the power. They allow your transgressions to keep you on the field winning games. They don’t care about you; they care about your next win, and their next title. I would offer, Mr. Winston, that you are (perhaps unintentionally) leading the charge to show women of the world that they, their sexuality — and by extension their personal power — are negotiable and expendable. I see past your clownish persona. I see you for what you are. I see you as you should be seen: as nothing. In condemnation, Charles J. Orlando *I’m going to ensure that alleged follows my words. Wouldn’t want you (or anyone) to think that you actually faced a court of law where justice might prevail.

Thicke finds a classy new posse
THE WORD Ned Ehrbar takes on the world of gossip. NED EHRBAR
@Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.us
What’s the name of the group Thicke joined? Well, the second word is Posse and the first word begins with P. To quote the ancient scripture of “O.P.P.” by Naughty by Nature: “It’s sorta like another way to call a cat a kitten. It’s five little letters that are missing.”
Robin Thicke might have lost Paula Patton, but the “Blurred Lines” singer has apparently been inducted as the newest member of Leonardo DiCaprio’s long-standing group of guy pals. Members who have been by Leo’s side for years include Lukas Haas, Kevin Connolly and David Blaine, and the most recent inductee before Thicke was

reportedly Jonah Hill. According to Page Six, Thicke announced his inclusion in the, um, P— Posse by throwing himself a divorce party. “There were a lot of models there. Leo and Robin were being super flirtatious and talking to tons of girls,” a source says. “Robin, in particular, was dancing and talking to a pretty brunette.”

Chris Noth has angry words about the critics’ angry words about ‘Sex’
Chris Noth takes issue with a few lingering “Sex and the City” points. First off, people have always been unfairly harsh about his character, Big. “He never tried to pretend he was anything other than what he was. It was
[Carrie] who tried to pretend he was something he wasn’t,” he tells an Australian Website. “The relationship just didn’t work, and he went on to get married while she went on to … how many boyfriends did she have?
She was such a whore!” Also, those bad reviews of 2010’s “Sex and the City 2”? He has a problem with them. “There was not one good review of that film. Not one. And I think it was very hurtful for the girls, because it got personal. The media can be dogs,” says the man who just called Carrie a whore.
Heidi Klum: Legally on ‘Fifty Shades’ of shame? the market, unofficially off the market It took nearly three years of negotiating, but Heidi Klum and Seal are finally officially divorced, with the agreement finalized earlier this week, according to TMZ. The “Project Runway” host and the “Kiss from a Rose” singer were married for seven years before splitting up in January 2012. The divorce must have not been that
heated, as the two have been seen attending their kids’ soccer games recently looking perfectly friendly. Klum, for her part, has already moved on and is reportedly dating 27-year-old playboy Vito Schnabel. Wait, wait, wait. Playboy is still an actual, viable profession? For serious? I knew I picked the wrong major in college.
Dakota Johnson reportedly doesn’t want her family to watch her in the film adaptation of “50 Shades of Grey,” according to the National Enquirer. Sources say Johnson “can’t bear the thought” of her parents, Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, or her grandmother, Tippi Hedren, seeing the steamier and kinkier elements. She is evidently OK with 18-year-old half-sister Stella Banderas watching, though.

Ebola facts will have to wait until election Re: ‘Obama has experts’ (Metro, Oct. 16) Apparently, letter writer Jean Kazadi has either not heard what President Obama said a few weeks ago about how Ebola spreads or she hasn’t heard that two health care workers in the U.S. are infected. In her letter, she claims Obama only gives the public correct information. But It’s election season, and Obama told us that the disease is extremely difficult to catch — but one infected person infected two health care workers. Sounds like if we want the truth, we need to wait until after Democrats lose the Senate, at long last. KEVIN METZ, VIA EMAIL
Is US really in crisis? I am curious what this widespread Ebola panic is that’s referred to? Here, the only time I hear about it is lighthearted comments among friends. Oh yes, and the constant news reports about how hard it is to get. Just like our state and federal government officials, you seem to be pushing the idea that we shouldn’t panic about contracting Ebola, but we should definitely panic over the fact that some people might want to take commonsense measures to protect themselves. Patriots block field goal to pull out win over Jets 2
NFL. The Jets lost their sixth straight game despite hanging tough with New England deep into the game. It looked for awhile like the Jets would do the improbable and pull off an upset on the road against the Patriots. But a third quarter lead didn’t hold up and a late rally fell short in a gut-wrenching 27-25 loss on Thursday night. Down 27-19 late in the fourth quarter, quarterback Geno Smith led an efficient drive down the field capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jeff Cumberland, cutting the Patriots lead to 27-25. But the Jets missed the two-point conversion that would have tied things up. Tom Brady found running back Shane Vereen for touchdowns twice in the first half and a touchdown pass to Danny Amendola in the fourth quarter gave the Patriots the lead. But the class of the AFC East were pushed hard by the Jets. The Jets got close enough for Nick Folk to
Mistakes and miscues Oday Aboushi cost the Jets a touchdown on a holding call on the first drive of the game. They would have to settle for a field goal, which became a consistent issue for the Jets. They also moved the ball into the red zone on their second drive, only to see Willie Colon push them back due to holding. Again they settled for a field goal. They ended up settling for field goals on their first four drives. On the other side of the ball, the Jets defense allowed a devastating touchdown on third-and-goal from the 19-yard line in the fourth quarter.

attempt a 58-yard field goal at the final whistle, but it was blocked by Patriots defensive lineman Chris Jones. Metro breaks down what went wrong in the narrow defeat.

Big play Brady He didn’t put up the big numbers we’ve come
to expect, but Brady was just good enough to cost the Jets on a couple of big plays. On the game’s opening drive, he went over the top for a 49-yard touchdown pass to Vereen, when cornerback Phillip Adams expected help from the safety he never received.
Helping hand It took until the Jets’ final possession in the game for a wide receiver not named Eric Decker to get a catch — a crucial 16-yard reception from Jeremy Kerley. There were a number of factors in play, from poor protection to poor decisions at the quarterback position, but the Jets must get a better balance early. Decker played big, often with former Jet Darrelle Revis on his back, as he finished with four receptions for 65 yards.

Giants vs. Cowboys: Three things to watch The Giants were knocked back to earth by the Eagles last week after a threegame winning streak had them skyrocketing up power rankings around the country. The schedule doesn’t get any easier as they travel to Dallas for a second straight intradivisional rivalry game on the road. New York is hoping it goes much better. Metro takes a look at three storylines to watch as the Giants travel to Jerry

Here’s your chance, rookie Last week’s season-ending injury to Victor Cruz gives rookie Odell Beckham Jr. a huge opportunity. Head coach Tom Coughlin chose to move the shifty wideout into the slot over Preston Parker. There’s no question that’s a better choice based on pure athletic ability. But Beckham will have to show he’s ready for a bigger role in just his third game in

Chasing Jim Brown Anytime a running back can be mentioned in the same breath as Jim Brown you know he’s playing pretty well. Dallas’ DeMarco Murray matched maybe the greatest football player of all-time with his sixthstraight 100-yard rushing game to start the season. Murray’s 785 yards leads the NFL by 243 yards, and he’s on pace to rush for over 2,000 yards this season. Needless to say, the Giants’ front seven
has their work cut out for them.

DRC may be MIA One of the most underrated offseason moves in football was the Giants’ acquisition of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. He’s stepped into the top cornerback spot on the roster. But he didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday due to injury, and after sounding optimistic he’d play Wednesday, Coughlin sounded less so Thursday. The Cowboys have a potent group of receivers, led by Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams. If RodgersCromartie can’t go, it’s a big setback. MARK OSBORNE
