Brooklyn. The girl was reportedly beaten to death at a homeless shelter. Police charged Kelsey Shawn Smith, 20, Sunday evening in the alleged beating death of his 3-year-old stepdaughter at a homeless shelter in Brooklyn. Smith was charged with a felony assault and acting in a manner that was injurious to a child less than 17 years old. Jeida Torres, 3, was found unresponsive in her Bushwick apartment on Cooper Street on Saturday afternoon. The girl, along with her 5-year-old brother, Andrew, were found with bruising on their bodies and taken by ambu-

lance to Wyckoff Hospital. According to local sources who spoke to numerous media outlets, Torres had soiled herself before she was beaten. The girl was pronounced dead on arrival, and her brother was listed in stable condition. Smith, 20, was taken into custody later Saturday, but the charges didn’t come until the following evening. The apartment where Torres died is a part of the city’s Department of Homeless Services and managed by a private contractor. According to the department’s most recent daily census on Oct. 16, 24,626 children were living in homeless shelters in the city. DHS gave the facility a median rating — three out of six — during the most

“It’s upsetting to hear. The child never really had a chance to live,” said Raymond Rios, who lives in the neighborhood. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams held a press conference outside the apartment Sunday afternoon, calling on DHS to investigate Jeida Torres’ death. Adams said Andrew Torres was beaten by the suspect when he tried to intervene and stop Smith from beating his sister. “This is a sick, senseless act,” Adams said. “Anyone with a family feels chills when they hear that a 3-year-old child has been killed.” “A child has no chance against the hands of an adult. We have a fallen angel who died yesterday — a baby girl — and her brother witnessed it,” said Ama Dwimoh, special

counsel to Adams and former head of the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Crimes Against Children Bureau. Smith’s brother, Mark Almodovar, also was near the Cooper Street home on Sunday. “He never meant to hurt the kid. He mean to discipline her and accidentally crushed her lungs. He wouldn’t do that. He’s not that kind of person. He tried to kill himself because he felt guilty and knew he was going to jail,” Almodovar said. Torres’ mother was not home at the time of the incident. A photo of a marriage license posted on Smith’s Facebook page shows that the couple got married in July. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE Wendy.Biddlecombe@metro.us

New eatery echoes Village past A new eatery called Hamilton’s Soda Fountain and Luncheonette recently opened in Greenwich Village, on the corner of Marc Jacobs and Marc Jacobs, also known as Bank St. and W. Fourth. It’s one of those retro places that attracts and repels me, first for its nostalgic verisimilitude, second for its twee self-awareness. So I approached Hamilton’s with suspicious curiosity. But after checking out the menu and finding it affordable and filled with basics, I tried the place out. Lunch w was simple: ppotato salad, root beer and a chicken salad ssandwich, which ccame looking like something I’d lik made myself in my ma own kitchen — e.g., no be bells and whistles. I was impressed im by the cook’s restraint. re As for the potato pot salad, it was potato salad. I applaud it for nnot showing off. For me, food is secondary at a restaurant. What’s most important What’

is atmosphere. I like a quiet place where real humans eat. At Hamilton’s, I was joined by an older lady, whose name I didn’t get, though she told me the story of her 50 years in the Village and the flower shop she once ran. The lady was delighted to find Hamilton’s. “There’s no place left to eat around here,” she said. “The Village is gone. Only the buildings are left standing.” She ordered the pastrami sandwich and a cream soda. We talked about tourists and death. She told me about her rent-controlled apartment. “I’ll probably die there,” she said, “in another five years. That’s enough for me.” If Hamilton’s keeps appealing to people like her, it’s a good thing for the Village. I just hope they don’t ruin it. CATHARINA THUMLING

Violence has increased in New York City’s jail system over the past seven years, even as the city has spent more money to deal with a steadily declining inmate population, the city’s comptroller said in an analysis. The annual cost per inmate has increased by more than 42 percent to $96,232 since 2007, the analysis said, while the average daily population has decreased to about 11,400 inmates this year, from nearly 14,000. In that same time, violent fights and assaults involving inmates or guards have increased. Inmate assaults on staff more than doubled to about 70 assaults per 1,000 inmates this year. Some of the dozens of people who are being watched for possible exposure to Ebola in the United States were expected to be cleared on Sunday and today, potentially easing concerns about the spread of the disease after two nurses were infected. Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf urged on Sunday stronger international action to bring the epidemic under control, saying the disease was unleashing an economic catastrophe that will leave a “lost generation of young West Africans. Belgium announced on Sunday it would screen people arriving at its largest airport from West Africa for signs of fever. Report: Five coaches suspended at the NJ hazing scandal school Sayreville. The school with about 1,700 students is considered a football powerhouse. A New Jersey high school embroiled in a hazing case that has led to sexual abuse charges has suspended five football coaches, local media reported on Sunday. The head coach and four assistant coaches, all of whom also teach at Sayreville War Memorial High School, have been suspended from their coaching and teaching positions, according to NJ Advance Media. They are suspended with pay and have not been charged in the hazing allegations, according to NJ Advance Media, citing sources. The school district superintendent and the school board president could not be reached to confirm or comment on the report. Earlier, the superintendent canceled the remainder of this year’s high school football season and has said he was considering suspending the program in future years as well. Three Sayreville players

were charged earlier this month with aggravated sexual assault, and four were charged with aggravated assault, aggravated criminal sexual contact and other crimes. Prosecutors say the victims were held against their will while other juveniles touched them. NJ Advance Media, citing interviews with victims, has reported that the freshman players were held down while other players inserted fingers into their rectums and then their mouths. REUTERS

Dozens hurt in riots near pumpkin festival More than two dozen people were treated at a New Hampshire hospital for injuries resulting from rioting that erupted near the site of an annual pumpkin festival in Keene, New Hampshire, a hospital oďŹƒcial said. Hundreds of mostly young people descended on neighborhoods around the pumpkin festival on Saturday, setting bonďŹ res, throwing bottles and ipping some vehicles as police in riot gear tried to keep control, according to local news coverage. All told, 26 people arrived at Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene with injuries, a hospital spokeswoman said on Sunday. The disruptions happened about two blocks from the pumpkin fest, adjacent to Keene State College. REUTERS

Political crisis

Hong Kong street clashes erupt despite imminent talks Violent clashes erupted in Hong Kong early on Sunday for a second night, deepening a sense of impasse between a government with limited options and a pro-democracy movement increasingly

willing to confront police. The worst political crisis in Hong Kong since Britain handed the freewheeling city back to China in 1997 entered its fourth week with no sign of a resolution despite talks scheduled on Tuesday between the government and student protest leaders. Pope Francis has closed an assembly of Catholic bishops that revealed deep divisions on how to respond to homosexuality and divorce, saying on Sunday the Church should not be afraid of change and new challenges. Francis, who has said he wants a more merciful and less rigid Church, made his comments in a sermon to some 70,000 people in St. Peter’s Square for the ceremonial closing of a two-week assembly, known as a synod. The working session of the gathering ended on Saturday night with a final document that reversed an historic acceptance of gays by the Church made just a week earlier — a result some progressives see as a setback for Francis. At the Mass, he beatified Pope Paul VI, who died in 1978, bringing the pontiff best known for con-

cluding the groundbreaking reforms of the Second Vatican Council and enshrining the Church’s ban on contraception a step closer to sainthood. After an initial draft of the synod’s final document was released on Monday, conservative bishops vowed to row back on the upbeat tone adopted regarding gays, cohabitation and re-marriage, saying it would create confusion among the faithful and threatened to undermine the traditional family. Francis dedicated most of his sermon to the synod, which tackled themes such as homosexuality, divorce, re-marriage and same-sex couples ahead of a definitive gathering next October after more discussions at a local level. He said the Church had “to respond courageously to whatever new challenges come our way.” REUTERS

North and South Korea exchanged gunfire on Sunday when the North’s soldiers approached the military border and did not retreat after the South fired warning shots, the South Korean Defense Ministry said. The North’s soldiers fired back in an

exchange of gunfire that lasted about 10 minutes but the situation did not escalate, a ministry official said. “There were no casualties or property damage,” the official said. The incident was the latest in a series of confrontations in recent weeks between the rival Koreas, that remain technically at war, and follows an urgent meeting between senior military officials on Wednesday to discuss how to ease tensions. OMG! Get stuck into a brave new tech world with sticker sensors A new “smart” tech works like a personal assistant and a wearable device all in one. Nearables, created by U.S.-based company Estimote, are “stickers” with their very own memory and Bluetooth connectivity. The gadgets are designed to be attached to everyday objects like cars, handbags, shoes and even pet collars. The adhesive tabs, which are just three millimeters in size, bridge the gap between the physical and digital world to create a seamless experience of everything from shopping to transportation and home automation. Wojtek Borowicz, community manager of Estimote, explains more about the gizmo. Are they related to your previous technology called Beacons? Nearables are a natural evolution of Estimote Beacons — the first generation of our product, designed for static venues and locations. Both Beacons and Nearables provide mobile apps with realworld context, but our latest product is more discreet and cheap and can be stuck anywhere. What do they have over ordinary phone apps? The stickers are equipped with a very tiny ARM-based processor and a Bluetooth Smart module. They also have an accelerometer and a temperature sensor. So the big idea behind

called claspers to transfer sperm to females. Females, for their part, developed small paired bones to lock the male organs in place for mating. Placoderms are the earliest vertebrate ancestors of humans. “Placoderms were once thought to be a

dead-end group with no live relatives, but recent studies show that our own evolution is deeply rooted in placoderms and that many of the features we have — such as jaws, teeth and paired limbs — first originated with this group of fishes,” said John Long, a paleontologist at Flinders University in South Australia who led the research. Five tips for dyslexic college applicants Accommodations. Doing a little homework is essential to thriving as an undergrad. Looking at colleges is stressful for almost all students, but for those with dyslexia, the process can be filled with unique challenges. Dyslexia, a learning disorder that makes it difficult for students to read easily, is still often misunderstood by many teachers and school administrators. “Our brains are wired to speak and to learn language,” says Ben Shifrin, head of the Jemicy School in Maryland and an Execu-

What she mostly remembered was telling herself it was OK to add another skill to her rĂŠsumĂŠ, despite whatever reservations she might have had initially. “It’s amazing what you discover you’re able to do once you really put your body and soul into a skill and you try nothing but to master it,â€? she says. “You discover a lot about yourself, that you can actually do something if you put your mind to it. I realized that I’m not

as bad or as tone deaf as I thought I was, and some people would appreciate my shower singing. The film is also a massive celebration of Mexican culture, envisioned by director Jorge Gutierrez and shepherded by producer Guillermo del Toro. “You are dealing with the beauty of a culture that, even though we’ve been neighbors since the beginning of time — since the beginning of America — there is so little that we know, she says. “The Mexican culture is so beautiful.

As for what is a kids’ ďŹ lm focused on coping with death and the idea of the afterlife? Saldana doesn’t think it’s such a crazy idea. “It’s an educational tool. It will give parents the ability to have that tough conversation with their kids,â€? she insists. “Even though they understand more than we want them to, we don’t accept that, and it’s diďŹƒcult for us to communicate with them. But they’re ready to listen. So by bringing this animated ďŹ lm about death, that brings so much peace and purity and color, you can identify with them through the loss that you probably share — or will at some point. A few Sundays ago, “The Simpsons saw its longest and arguably craziest ever opening credits couch gag — one that envisioned a strange and disturbing distant future where, yes, the show is still on and the family has been reduced to shapes and shrieking catchphrases. It came from the mind (and actual pencil) of Don Hertzfeldt, one of animation’s most unique voices whose shtick is that he draws stick figures — and we do mean draws. He never uses computers, instead painstakingly doodling on paper, the way toons were made before technology made things easier. It took Hertzfeldt years to make his only featurelength film, “It’s Such a Beautiful Day, released in 2012 and new to iTunes. It tells of a melancholic everyman who is suddenly diagnosed with a life-threatening illness that messes with his mind. As his condition worsens, hallucinations take over, and soon the film itself starts to break down, reorganize itself and soar off into the cosmos. It’s devastating stuff — no less than a stick figure “Tree of Life — and it

Chasing the chaotic “Carnage,â€? the ďŹ lmmaker turns to a two-hander, in which a blustery actress (Emmanuelle Seigner) undoes a theater director (Mathieu Amalric). That Polanski’s real-life wife is messing with an actor commonly thought of as his doppelganger is not lost on the ďŹ lm, which mixes meta jokes, character shifts and lots of leather.

confirms that Hertzfeldt has become “mature without sacrificing any of his considerable gifts. He was once full-on funny; his early works include “Billy’s Balloon, in which sentient balloons attack adorable children, and the Oscar-nominated fake commercial fantasia “Rejected. Real pain always underlined these jokey shorts, and soon Hertzfeldt turned more serious — if still funny. “The Meaning of Life, from 2005, is as heavy as its title implies. “It’s Such a Beautiful Day gets similarly mind-blowing, especially in its finale, which imagines a future where humankind is not helplessly insignificant after all. It actually will make you laugh and cry.

THE MOST POPULAR QUESTIONS

Zen in the City

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN

For the last decade, I’ve been writing self-help books and preaching the Gospel of Gabby to audiences around the world. And no matter what country I’m in, these three questions are always coming up. Because they’re so popular, I decided to bring my answers to you!

WWW.GABBYB.TV Gabrielle Bernstein is the author of “Spirit Junkie.” Her new book, “Miracles Now,” is in stores now.

PLUS

“How do I release my fear?” My response is the same no matter what the person may fear: All of our fears are rooted in the stories we choose to believe. When we get stuck in negative stories (“I don’t have enough,” “I’m unsafe,” “I’m not good enough” and so on), we give them continuous energy to feed on. Begin to heal your fears right now simply by acknowledging them. We tend to put a lot of effort into ignoring our fears; try examining them instead. Upon looking at your fear, say, “I choose to see peace instead.” This simple choice shifts your perspective and begins a new pattern.

Meditation 101

The 1-Minute Breath Practice this technique every day to experience the benefits that stillness can bring to your life: • Breathe in for 5 seconds. • Hold your breath for 5 seconds. • Release for 5 seconds. • Hold for 5 seconds. • Repeat.

THE FUTURE OF FOOT SURGERY

If you exude a joyful energy, people will be drawn to you. / THINKSTOCK

“How do I attract a romantic partner?” This question is relevant even if you’re attached! Attracting (or keeping) a romantic partner has everything to do with the energy you emit. If you give off a low vibe, you are deflecting romance — your energy basically tells other people to back off. But if you choose to dwell in an energy of joy, you become super attractive. If this feels new and weird

to you, start with your interactions with friends, colleagues or even strangers. Share kindness and joy, and see how it changes your everyday encounters. “How do I meditate?” People are becoming more and more comfortable with the concept of meditation. Even though we’re aware of our stress and anxiety, it can be difficult to see a way out of that mindset. The answer

is through meditation. The simplest way to begin a meditation practice is through your breath. You have a minute to spare, right? Try my 1-Minute Breath method (see left), because one minute a day can change your life. Get more of my advice by tuning in to my upcoming episode of “Help Desk” on the Oprah Winfrey Network on Oct. 26 at 11 a.m.

Reinventing office spaces for the 21st-century worker Forget cubicles and stuy oďŹƒces. Businesses and independent freelancers are now changing the way they work.

in clients and arrange meetings, hospitality is paramount.

Makeshift Society Brooklyn Located in Williamsburg, Makeshift Society Brooklyn has a totally different vibe, which co-founder Bryan Boyer tells us was made to reflect the neighborhood. Here, the emphasis on connecting people and helping businesses grow is especially strong. “When people join, we take the time to find out what they do and what they’re working on, and we’ll say ,’Oh, you should meet so-andso.’ ‌ Having things like a communal kitchen, open workspaces and mixers connects people without it being a ‘networking event,’â€? Boyer tells us. Makeshift Society Brooklyn has regular events and classes where topics range from typography to making the whole workingfor-yourself thing actually pay off. Different types of memberships are offered, such as a $30 per day or $50 per month pass to use the open workspaces, and up to $500 a month for a permanent space where you can keep your computer and files.

If you’re self-employed or work mostly alone, you know how hard it can be to get motivated. A solution to this problem is quickly emerging in rentable workspaces that are not only designed to spark creativity but also serve as a place to form business connections. And it’s not just bloggers who are taking advantage. Businesses are starting to rent spaces out, too. Here, we highlight three local places: A view of NeueHouse’s main oor, which costs $600/month to use as a member. / ERIC LAIGNEL

This six-story space has an industrial-chic feel, with a full restaurant on the ground floor, open tables and plenty of private conference rooms. Some members choose to only have access to the main level ($600 per month), while others rent a permanent space upstairs (roughly $1,400 per month). Murray carries Dallas to victory over Giants NFL. The Giants fell victim to the NFL’s best running back in a close defeat by the NFC East-leading Cowboys. The Giants knew they would need to stop DeMarco Murray if they were going to leave Dallas with a win. It didn’t matter. Murray rushed for an NFL-record seventh 100yard game to begin the season as the Cowboys (6-1) won, 31-21, to take a solo hold on first place in the NFC East with the Eagles on a bye. New York (3-4) dropped under .500 with the defeat. The loss was the Giants’ second straight after reeling off three consecutive wins, though at least they were more competitive than in a 27-0 loss to Philadelphia last week. Metro looks at three things that went wrong in the Giants’ loss.

Sunday was not his day. Even though he had a few big catches, he also had his second fumble at the end of the game to put a wrap on the loss. Missing Jennings

Nets come up short in abbreviated contest

Rangers romp to win over powerful Sharks

The Nets could’ve used 48 minutes to beat the Celtics on Sunday. Sadly, they only had 44. Brooklyn lost at home to the Celtics, 95-90, in a preseason game in which the NBA experimented with 11-minute quarters for the ďŹ rst time. The Nets trailed 7563 entering the fourth quarter, but could only pull back three points. Reserve center Jerome Jordan looked good with 17 points on 7-of-7 shooting. METRO

The Rangers are struggling to ďŹ nd consistency this season, but it didn’t look that way against one of the Western Conference’s best on Sunday. The Rangers pounced on the Sharks, who hadn’t lost in regulation before Sunday, with three goals in the second period on their way to a 4-0 win. Carl Hagelin opened the scoring, with Martin St. Louis and Rick Nash adding goals within a 6:19 period. The Rangers are now 3-3. METRO

yards, it was Murray’s effort down the stretch which put the game out of reach for New York. Murray broke through the line for a third-and-1 with 4:04 left. Murray had 26 yards on the team’s final drive, which ended in a field goal to make it a two-score game.

2The biggest momenFumbled away

tum swing of the game came when Eli Manning found Larry Donnell for a first down on thirdand-8 with 11:13 left in the game, trailing 21-14. But Donnell couldn’t hold onto the ball after being hit and stripped by Barry Church. It took less than two minutes for the Cowboys to drive down and make it a 28-14 lead. Donnell has had a tremendous season, but

to show for the Giants. Rookie Andre Williams has tried to step up to fill in for the injured veteran, but he’s looked like a complementary back two weeks in a row now. And when Peyton Hillis, a player who’s been washed up for years, is your backup that’s a major problem. Williams finished with 18 carries for 51 yards, but 22 yards came on one run. The Giants now have 190 total rushing yards over the last two losses. They averaged 154 rushing yards per game over their threegame winning streak and they had 193 yards in the Texans win alone. It’s hard to blame Williams as much as the front office is to blame for not having another option behind Williams once David Wilson retired. MARK OSBORNE @MetroNYSports

Report: Harvin would’ve been cut If the Jets hadn’t stepped up to trade for wide receiver Percy Harvin, the former Pro Bowler would’ve been cut, according to ESPN. The Seahawks reportedly shopped Harvin to the Browns, Broncos and Colts before the Jets dealt a conditional sixthround pick Friday.

Seahawks fall again, Chiefs rally NFL. Seattle is suddenly looking very beatable, while the Bengals and Browns fell back to earth. St. Louis held a 21-3 lead over the defending Super Bowl champs in the second quarter thanks, in large part, to Stedman Bailey’s 90-yard punt return. Seattle would mount a comeback, but Lance Kendricks’ 4-yard touchdown reception from Austin Davis with 5:36 remaining stunted the Seahawks’ efforts and a courageous fake punt from their own 18-yard line with 2:55 left gave the Rams a 28-26 win.
