NYC buskers decry treatment by cops Brooklyn. A rally was held for a busker whose arrest was caught on video and went viral. Sounds of protest songs and beatboxing filled the Metropolitan Avenue G subway station Tuesday as subway performers rallied against the recent arrest of Andrew Kalleen. Kalleen, 30, was playing in the station on Saturday when an officer told him he could not perform without a permit, and to leave the station. Kalleen, who was playing an acoustic guitar, told the officer he had a right to perform under the MTA Rules of Conduct which permits “artistic performances, including the acceptance of donations” as long as the performer does not “impede transit activities.” The police officer forcibly removed the guitar from around Kalleen’s neck, and told him to leave. Kalleen was cuffed by officers and ejected from the station. A bystander shot a video of the incident, which has been seen 575,000 times on YouTube. The rally was organized by BuskNY, an advocacy group for subway performers, and attended by performers, as well as representatives from the Street Vendor project and two New York City council members.

Farina fires 15 school leaders Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina fired 15 school superintendents on Tuesday. Another 27 superintendents kept their positions in the shakeup. “I want leaders at the helm who understand what it takes to ensure a supportive school community,” Farina said. The shift has reportedly been in the works

since July, when all 42 of the city’s superintendents were asked to reapply for their positions. Since then, a rehiring process has been underway, with eight districts immediately getting new superintendents. “Change is crucial — and it has to be change moving in the right direction,” added Farina. Newly hired superintendents met with Farina on Tuesday. METRO

Kalleen was more softspoken at the gathering than when he asserted his rights on Saturday. “We were lucky that something was captured on tape,” Killeen said. BuskNY called upon the NYPD to train officers on interacting with subway performers. “If this is ‘broken windows,’ then I want no part of it,” said Councilman Stephen Levin. Kalleen, who was arrested on charges of loitering, has a court date set for Friday. Matthew Christian of BuskNY said he believes the charges will be thrown out, as the arrest of many buskers before him have. Darcey Leonard, 39, who has produced perfor-

mance art shows for the past 18 years, said the subway is “one of the best stages for artists to develop.” James Cohen, an associate law professor at Fordham Law School, said that the video shows the cop “being rude and confrontational.” Cohen said generally, people have a right to perform in stations as long as they are not disorderly. “[Police Commissioner Bill] Bratton is old school … and I don’t have any doubt in his perspective he sees street entertainers in the subway system as being disruptive,” Cohen said. MTA funding gap could cost riders A report released Tuesday by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli found the MTA is in “better financial condition,” but warned a funding gap could end up costing transit riders in the long run. There is a $15 billion gap in the MTA’s fiveyear capital program, DiNapoli said. “Additional borrowing could increase pressure on fare and tolls, and while the MTA should look for opportunities for savings, deep cuts could affect the future reliability of the transit system and jeopardize expansion projects,” DiNapoli said. DiNapoli’s report found for every billion dollars borrowed, riders could feel a 1 percent increase in fares if the funding gap is not filled. The report also found that 1.7 billion people rode the subway in 2013, and 81.8 million people rode the Metro North. METRO

Manhattan. Attorney General warns people about Ebola scams New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman issued a consumer alert on Tuesday warning New Yorkers about Ebolarelated schemes. Schneiderman said companies have been trying to sell “bogus Ebola preparedness kits that claim to cure the virus, for which there is not an FDA-approved drug. Fundraising schemes are common as public fears rise, according to the attorney general’s office. New Yorkers should beware of fundraising solicitations and offers of goods and services related to Ebola, Schneiderman said. “Scammers are shamefully exploiting this moment of heightened concern about public health to defraud good people. NYC. New apps aim to save pedestrian lives A smartphone app that alerts pedestrians when they cross into an intersection and one that alerts drivers when they start to fall asleep were named the winners Tuesday of an NYU and AT&T competition, the purpose of which is to find ways to cut down on traffic deaths in the city. Tug uses Bluetooth technology to send notifications to distracted pedestrians who are using their smartphones and about to cross an intersection without the right of way. The other winner, Anti-

Sleep Alarm, prevents car drivers from falling asleep at the wheel. The app asks the driver how tired he or she is at the beginning of the trip and uses facial recognition to monitor whether the driver’s eyes are open or shut during the drive. “New York City’s Vision Zero initiative means that we need to use every tool in our arsenal to drive down traffic-related fatalities and injuries, said Kim Wiley-Schwartz, assistant commissioner for education, Department of Transportation. Jennifer Garner was honored at Elle magazine’s Women in Hollywood benefit earlier this week, and she used the name of the event as a jumping off point for a pretty awesome speech about sexism in Hollywood. Here it is: “The fact that there even needs to be a Women in Hollywood event is a little bit sad. I mean, the Men in Hollywood event is every day — it’s called Hollywood. Fifty-one percent of the population should not have to schedule a special event to celebrate the fact that in an art that tells the story of what it means to be human and alive, we get to play a part. “So for example, my husband and I do kind of the same job, a little bit. Not long ago we both had one of those magical days, we call it a junket, where we both attended these lovely events where people come in every four minutes, they ask the same questions over and over again, you know the drill. We got home at night and

And I told him every single person who interviewed me, I mean every single one asked me, ‘How do you balance work and family?’ and he said the only thing that people asked him repeatedly was about the tits on the ‘Blurred Lines’ girl, which, for the record if we’re talking about them, they are real and they are fabulous. … As for work-life balance, he said

no one asked him about it that day. As a matter of fact, no one had ever asked him about it. And we do share he same family. Isn’t it time to kind of change that conversation?” All valid points, and cleverly made. I’m all for asking Affleck about how he juggles it all the next time I interview him. But does that mean I have to ask Garner about Emily Ratajkowski’s rack, too?

Bieber scolded by the Vatican

After a year of very grown-up trouble, it’s nice to see Justin Bieber getting back to the kind of juvenile shenanigans that made him such a lovable scamp to begin with. Pop’s reigning tiny tyrant took a trip to the Vatican recently, where he was scolded by staff

during a tour for kicking a soccer ball around the halls. Oh, that Bieber. Always up to something! Justin, you know you’re not supposed to play ball inside the house of the Lord.

Get sweet, not spooky, pumpkin desserts If you haven’t had enough of pumpkin mania, keep reading. After enjoying a delicious fall meal (maybe a pumpkin pasta from last week’s column), indulge in a pumpkin dessert.

Magnolia Bakery Five locations. Magnolia is in full pumpkin mode, with pumpkin cupcakes frosted with maple cream cheese, pumpkin brownie bars with a layer of chocolate and mini pumpkin cheesecakes. Don’t worry, they also serve pumpkin pies, which are great for holiday dinners, and pumpkin whoopie pies. Start your day with a cup of coee and a pumpkin muďŹƒn. Cupcakes start at $3.50.

Doughnut Plant Two locations. This place has raised the game for all doughnut makers, combining traditional avors with unconventional stuďŹƒngs and top-

pings. They’ve been at it for 100 years, creating the ďŹ rst square doughnut and ďŹ lled creme brulee doughnut (sinfully good). Stop by now for the pumpkin or apple cinnamon doughnuts and cakes. The Plant promotes a special avor every day that sells out quickly. There is always a line, but it’s worth the wait — $3.25 never tasted so good.

Francois Payard Three locations. The macaron king has gone seasonal. The pumpkin variety is extremely light and aky, yet full of avor. Buy a dozen for the perfect hostess gift ($30). There’s also a Jack O’Lantern cake ($39) made with pumpkin pound cake and pumpkin creme brulee, and an array of chocolates (try the key lime) and trues (praline is another favorite). This chocolate is top-notch.

Live shows. What does it take to be among the 1,300 acts performing in NYC this week?

Expert opinion

Who to see at CMJ Who is Matt McDonald looking forward to seeing this year?

Roughly 1,300 acts will perform throughout the city as part of the CMJ Music Marathon. While this number may seem daunting, it’s not even the half of it. “It’s about a 25 percent acceptance rate, says Matt McDonald, who programs artist showcases at CMJ. “Music is the most important thing, obviously, says McDonald, “but we look at what kind of press they have, what kind of tour history they have, online profiles, what kind of team they have in place. If we commit to inviting them and if they commit to making the trip, whether that’s across a bridge or across an ocean — the last thing we want for anybody is to play to an empty room — then we’re really looking for bands who are at a point where playing CMJ can really benefit them. Some of CMJ’s biggest success stories — Arcade Fire, Lady Gaga, Avicii, Mumford and Sons — all played small rooms in previous years and broke out

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. “Have you seen them? They are awesome live! They’re a great rock band. There’s either three or four guitars.

to bigger success because of the CMJ exposure. McDonald, who’s in his 10th year with CMJ, says one of the biggest differences with this year’s marathon is that attendees don’t have to do too much extensive research to figure out who they want to see. “It’s the first year we’ve really had a top-notch app, he says. “With almost every band, you can just click on the link and with a festival like this, you have 1,300 acts and most people only know some of them, so just being able to hear it right then, right there can make a huge difference in terms of being spontaneous.

Michael Keaton doesn’t mince words when asked, point blank, what it’s like to have a career resurgence in “Birdman.” “It feels good,” he remarks. It should feel at least weird; in the film — made as a single (albeit fake) shot by “Babel” and “Biutiful” director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu — the former “Batman” star plays Riggan

Keaton’s character is staging a comeback with an out-of-control Broadway take on Raymond Carver; in real life, Keaton is staging a comeback with a tightly controlled piece of cinematic chaos. “Birdman” has already earned Keaton raves, though he says he was already feeling good about himself. When Inarritu, at a presser for the film’s New York Film Festival closing night appearance, talks about how he tends to feel good about what he’s doing before turning to selfdoubt, Keaton replies that he feels the same way. “The difference,” he adds, “is 20 minutes later I think, ‘No, you’re actually more than that, Michael.’” Still, the production was atypically demanding,

Sorry, superhero nerds Keaton and Norton attended the New York Comic Con for “Birdman,” even as they laughed about how what they’re promoting is decidedly not a comic book movie — though viewers who don’t do their research may buy a ticket to “Birdman” thinking it is one. Keaton remembers see-

ing “The Dead,” director John Huston’s 1987 swan song. A couple of young horror fans showed up and were unhappy to discover it was a lyrical and chatty adaptation of a short story by James Joyce. “You could tell they totally thought it was a horror movie,” he recalls. “You could hear mumbling in the back. ... At about minute 14, they were like, ‘F— this.’”

with Keaton having to stay “on” as Inarritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki — an old pro at long takes, with “Children of Men” and “Gravity” under his belt — kept cameras rolling. “When you watch them work together, you have to come up to that [level],” Keaton says. “Otherwise you’re a punk. You’re just dead weight.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Rentals are on a roll Survey. Rent.com tells us what we need to know before signing a new lease.

Renting? You aren’t alone. Nicole Schreck, senior brand manager at Rent.com, says there are a couple of reasons more and more people are choosing to rent. The first revolves around recent college graduates. “Young people coming out of college are strapped with crippling debt, which makes it harder for them to purchase homes than it was four generations ago,” says Schreck.

Another reason is that some simply enjoy the flexibility that comes with renting. “You can move more easily if you want to for a job opportunity,” she says. People are also drawn to rentals because of building amenities such as pools, tennis courts or home theaters — which many couldn’t afford in a home. And of course there’s the pleasure of not being burdened with raking leaves in the fall, lifting heavy shovels packed with snow in the winter or keeping up the grass in summertime. Gold Coast rentals heat up in New Jersey Real estate. There are nearly 9,000 residential units slated to hit along the Jersey waterfront.

Now, is that right time. Prices and interest rates are climbing. Don’t get priced out of the market! Have your beautiful new custom home built in the nearby, family friendly Pocono Mountains by LTS HOMES NOW.

HOME

New Jersey’s Gold Coast, the stretch of waterfront running along the Hudson River opposite Manhattan, is in the midst of a building boom, with dozens of developments (mostly rentals) in the pipeline. As prices in Manhattan and the outer boroughs climb, Gold Coast towns with strong transit links are increasingly shedding their second-fiddle status. “This side of the river used to be considered more of a niche market,” said David Barry of Hoboken-based Ironstate Development. “It’s now considered much more a piece of the fabric of greater New York.” Over the course of the next few years, the towns along the Gold Coast — which include Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, West New York and Edgewater — are expected to add just shy of 9,000 new apartments, riding a wave of demand that has been growing since 2010. RICH BOCKMANN

The overview

Concerns But there are some concerns about the large amount of residential product coming to the market. To wit, the vacancy rate is expected to tick up to 5.4 percent in 2017. Still, others are confident there will be enough demand to absorb the new units. “People like to say you can overbuild,” said HFF’s Jose Cruz. “The reality is, they will come for those units.” Cruz added that if any of the Gold Coast markets have the potential to overbuild, it is Jersey City. But even there, he said, any rental glut would be a short-term “blip.”

Driving demand Most of the recent

development has been, and will continue to be, centered in Jersey City, where trendy shops are popping up and an industry-friendly mayor is using tax incentives to encourage developers to build there. Recently completed residential projects include the LeFrak Organization’s 158-unit rental tower Laguna that’s part of Newport, the 600-acre, mixed-use city-within-a-city that the company has been developing for nearly 30 years. Other buildings that have come online in the last year in Jersey City include Fields Development’s 131-unit Madox Apartments and the Manhattan Building Company’s 155-unit Cast Iron Lofts, which the developer has dubbed Soho West.

Rising rents

The Numbers Last year, the vacancy rate for multi-family rentals in Hudson County, which covers many of the Gold Coast cities, was 4.7 percent, according to the research firm Reis. That was level with 2012, but a 13 percent

drop from 2011. Residential rents have been rising, too. In 2013, the average effective rent in Hudson County was $2,650, up 1.7 percent from the previous year, Reis’ data show. By comparison, average rents in Manhattan climbed 2.1 percent for

an annual price of $3,875 in 2013, according to appraisal firm Miller Samuel. In addition, demand in Hudson County is expected to grow steadily, with rents projected to increase more than 1.6 percent annually over the next five years, according to the commercial firm HFF.

‘We’ll have digital twins in five years’ The future. A more high-tech version of the movie “Her” might be a reality sooner than you would think. A few years from now, we will have a “digital twin,” a virtual facsimile of ourselves that will serve as our digital personal secretary — at least according to futurist and technology theorist John Smart. We asked Smart, the founder of the Acceleration Studies Foundation, to give us a glimpse into our cybernetic future. According to your vision, we will have digital twins a few years from now. What does that mean, exactly? A personal software agent,

or digital twin, is an informational simulation of your values, interests, goals and, eventually, even your personality. It is a software system that has a crude model of you, in order to better serve you. You could call it a “butler” or “secretary” or “agent” — just like a butler has a good mental simulation of who you are and what you care about, so will your software agent, which is why we can call it a “digital twin.” Can we compare them with the virtual characters in the movie “Her”? The female personal operating system in “Her” would be a good example. But just like professional people often prefer to use their real names on social networks, while kids and casual users often use avatar names, I expect many professional people

Bleak talk

The machines take over Aren’t you afraid that one day our digital avatars will replace us? If our digital systems are increasingly good copies of us, then it isn’t really “them” replacing “us,” is it? Rather, it is another version of “you.” Humans have been learning how to put the best of ourselves into our technologies since the dawn of humanity. will prefer to use an avatar that is a rough model of themselves, rather than one that takes another form. For example, if you use your personal software agent to screen your calls or do simple emails for you when you are busy

This could be the digital version of you, when this technology takes off. / PROVIDED

or asleep, some people will prefer their agent to look and act like them in these interactions. Others will prefer it to look like someone else. What are the benefits of having a computer-based version of us? The “natural language understanding” technology behind these conversational software platforms can be used to scan your emails and listen in on what you are saying. That allows them to make a semantics and values map of the words and things you care about. Tell us about privacy. Can someone steal my digital

twin and take all the info about me and, say, my banking details? We don’t always think about building good privacy, transparency and security systems until a crisis occurs. Then we have to play catch-up and build better systems. The challenge is to make these subjects as important as innovation and growth to our technologists, politicians and the public. We are often too busy creating the next thing to think as carefully as we should about these subjects. WANISE MARTINEZ, MWN @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Put down that nail file! Personal grooming. Too much trimming can change the shape – and health – of your nails. Clean and well-groomed hands are essential to a polished look, but trimming nails too frequently or into the wrong shape could actually lead to serious health conditions, according to a new study. “It is remarkable what some people are willing to do to make their nails look good, and it is in this context that I decided to look at what we really know about nails, explains lead researcher Dr. Cyril Rauch at the University of Nottingham. Turns out, that wasn’t much. Rauch’s evaluation of scientific journals turned up little on the physics or math when applied to nails. For their study, Rauch’s team came

When it comes to your nails, too much maintenance can be as harmful as chewing them. / MOODBOARD Quoted

“It is remarkable what some people are willing to do to make their nails look good, and it is in this context that I decided to look at what we really know about nails. Rauch

up with an equation to identify the physical laws of nail growth to find the causes of some of the most common nail-related problems, such as ingrown toenails, spoon-shaped nails

and pincer nails. “We demonstrate that the shapes of the free edge of a nail – the way we cut nails to give them a specific fashionable shape – can have repercussions on the

future shapes of the nail over time, as well as bring out underlying medical conditions, he says. The scientists discovered that when the balance between growth stress (nails growing too quickly or slowly) and adhesive stress (the number of structures supporting the nail) is broken, it can affect the entire nail, causing it to change shape over time. This situation happens much more often for larger and flatter nails like the big toe, which is most susceptible to problems. Age or change in metabolic activity, such as puberty or pregnancy, are the usual causes of nail stress, but the equations showed that it can be amplified by poor trimming. “We suggest that nail beauty fanatics who trim their nails on a daily basis opt for straight or parabolic edges, Rauch says.

Dip in blood sugar

Perception of value

Craving pizza or planning a snack binge? A University of Washington study of identical twins raised together (to eliminate genetic and environmental dierences in food habits) found that our brain’s response to the sight of food appears to be driven by how low our blood sugar level is at the moment. Twenty-one twin pairs ate from a buet, then their brains were scanned while looking at images of food. For the twin who made less satisfying food choices (as measured by blood glucose), the images provoked a stronger mental response.

Want a meal to taste better? Pay more for it, researchers at the Cornell Food and Brand Lab found. In the study, 139 diners at an Italian all-you-can-eat buet were charged either $4 or $8. They then rated the taste of the pizza and how much they enjoyed the dining experience. “People set their expectation of taste partially based on the price – and it becomes a self-fulďŹ lling prophecy,â€? says Dr. David Just. “If I didn’t pay much, it can’t be that good. Moreover, each slice is worse than the last – people really ended up regretting choosing the buet when it was cheap.â€? Diners who paid the higher price rated the pizza as being 11 percent tastier. In both situations diners ate an average of three slices of pizza. The lesson? “Go to the most expensive buffet you can aord. You’ll eat the same amount but enjoy the experience and the food more!â€? says co-author Dr. Brian Wansink.

High-calorie food bias

Everyone knows you shouldn’t shop hungry; not only will you buy more food, but you’ll buy food with higher caloric density. A new study found that while we’re generally bad at estimating the calories even in foods we like, in a simulated auction study participants were willing to bid higher amounts on the higher-calorie foods — suggesting that

the brain has an internal calorie counter that prizes such items. “Earlier studies found that children and adults tend to choose high-calorie food,â€? according to study author Alain Dagher, a neurologist at the Montreal Neurological Institute. “The easy availability and low cost of high-calorie food has been blamed for the rise in obesity. Their consumption is largely governed by the anticipated eects of these foods.â€?

IDZIK SHOULD JUDGE RYAN ON NEW ROSTER The addition of Percy Harvin not only adds an elite playmaker to the Jets, it also gives head coach Rex Ryan a shot at reclaiming the season. And it is these final nine games of the regular season that Ryan should be judged on in light of this trade. General manager John Idzik’s move for Harvin acknowledges his team was devoid of talent on the offensive side of the ball. A quick scan of the statistics for the season shows a mundane offense ranked No. 20 in the league, with the NFL’s second-worst passing offense. But statistics aren’t necessary. Anyone who’s seen a handful of minutes in a Jets game this season has seem an offense stuck in neutral. Trading for Harvin is Idzik admitting he didn’t do enough this offseason to bring in weapons for the offense. In doing so, Ryan’s 1-6 start should be wiped clean. At year’s end, Idzik

Rex Ryan is firmly entrenched on the hot seat with the Jets. / GETTY IMAGES Dyer on Ryan

“Problems remain, but Rex Ryan now has a fighting chance to right the ship and finish this year on a high note.”

can’t determine if Ryan is worthy of an extension based off this start. That’s like putting a blindfold on a student driver and failing him for veering off the road. Problems remain with this Jets team. The secondary — in particular cornerback — remains an outstanding issue. But

Ryan now has a fighting chance to right the ship and finish this year on a high note. It was always going to be an uphill climb for this Jets team. Last year’s 8-8 record wasn’t sustainable. That team won too many games on last-minute heroics. Factor in a tough slate of games to start this

season, with four dates against playoff teams from last year, and the dreams of a postseason berth were always meant to be dashed. But with Harvin, the Jets could be built into a playoff team down the road if they can utilize his ability in space and if quarterback Geno Smith can deliver him the ball down the field. These final nine games present a far more balanced schedule. They easily could have had another win or two with Harvin on the roster since Week 1. If they can utilize Harvin the right way, he will mask a lot of deficiencies. Win some games, and Ryan should earn a shot at one more season with the Jets.
