The Green Line is catching up to the rest of the MBTA transit system, as it now offers passengers a chance to better plan their commutes. On Thursday afternoon, the T began offering real-time information on the nation’s oldest subway line. The locations of Green Line trolleys will be fed to dozens of T realtime apps, according to transit officials. The move marks the completion of the first phase of a project to provide real-time information and predictions to the Green Line’s 227,000

Davey said on Thursday. The first phase of the project entailed adding aboveground Green Line train locations to the MBTA real-time data feed, allowing developers who produce apps to provide information about where the next train is located. The second phase of the project, expected by the end of the fall, will include

producing predicted arrival times for the Green Line, starting with the aboveground branches. Transit officials said they expect above-ground predictions to be up and running by early December, paving the way for countdown signs at stations on the D Branch. Customers on other lines will be able to see predictions on their phones and other devices, according to the T. The third phase of the project will deliver predictions to the Green Line’s underground subway stations, currently planned for early winter, when tracking hardware is installed in the tunnels. Boston. Walsh nearing decision on $20,000 pay hike for City Councilors

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is close to making a decision regarding the city council’s proposed pay hike and he may push for a smaller salary boost, an office representative said. The mayor’s office confirmed Thursday that Walsh is leaning toward a smaller salary
increase and could make a decision on the matter within the next two days. Earlier this month, the Boston City Council voted to boost a councilor’s salary from $87,500 to $107,500, but put off the pay increase until after the 2015 election to avoid any
legal conflicts of interest. The council voted in favor of the pay bump and if the nine councilors who voted in favor of the pay hike earlier this month don’t change, the council would have enough support to override a veto. DANNY MCDONALD
Boston’s longest serving mayor has suspended his cancer treatments and book tour in order to spend more time with his family. Former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, 71, has been hospitalized since last week with dehydration related to his cancer treatment. In March, Menino announced he had been diagnosed with advanced cancer that had spread to his liver and lymph nodes. “Today, I, along with my family, after talking with my medical team, have decided to suspend my book tour as well as my cancer treatments. While I continue to fight this terrible disease, I feel it is time for me to spend more time with my family, grandkids, and friends,” Menino said in a statement Thursday. Menino also thanked supporters for their “tremendous outpouring of kindness” and asked that everyone keep him and his family in their thoughts and prayers. METRO

Trump to Mitt: Don’t run again Real estate mogul and reality-TV star Donald Trump says former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney should not seek the White House again in 2016. Romney ran for president twice during the last decade and was defeated both times. Trump told Breitbart News this week, “No. I don’t think he should run. He had his chance and he blew it. He had a great chance of winning. He should have won.” Romney has mostly downplayed the idea of a third run at the presidency, although he was quoted in a New York Times Magazine profile last month as saying “We’ll see what happens” in response to a question about a 2016 run. Chelmsford man indicted for alleged scheme to hurt his wife
Mass. officials: Ebola causing spike in demand for equipment
A Middlesex Grand Jury has indicted a Chelmsford man on more 30 charges in connection with allegations that he tried to hire someone to hurt his wife. Andrew Gordon, 51, faces several charges, including intimidation of a witness, soliciting a felony, attempted assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in violation of a restraining order, violating a restraining order, stalking in violation of a restraining order, criminal harassment, and various destruction of property charges. Police allege Gordon vandalized his wife’s car and watched his wife’s apartment complex from the nearby woods with a ski mask and binoculars and tried to pay a “hit man” $20,000 to attack his wife. The hit man turned out to be an undercover state trooper. METRO
State officials have heard concerns about “supply chain shortages” for personal protective equipment and are monitoring the situation as the U.S. preps for more potential Ebola cases. Massachusetts Public Safety Undersecretary Kurt Schwartz said Thursday that he had heard concerns from first responders about the shortages and concerns about potential delays in receiving protective equipment. Schwartz said the state has talked about setting up “regional capability,” such as SWAT teams, that can handle the response instead of multiple fire or emergency service departments needing to be prepared for management of an Ebola patient. Ebola has caused an “incredible spike in demand” for protective equipment, said Schwartz. SHNS

Work begins on $4.5M Cambridge skate park East Cambridge. A once-polluted brownfield is slated to become New England’s largest skate park. State and local officials broke ground Thursday on what will become New England’s largest skate park, a $4.5 million project that will transform 40,000 square feet of polluted brownfield in East Cambridge, near the Charles and underneath ramps to Zakim Bridge. The park, which is expected to be finished in 2015, has been more than a decade in the making. Fundraising efforts were first launched in 2003. The idea for the park came after artist Nancy Schon learned that skateboarders were using her sculptures

The total project — including construction, environmental remediation, planning and design — will cost $4.5 million, according to the CRC. That figure includes a $1.5 million donation from Vans, which plans on hosting two skating events per year at the park, an $800,000 donation from the Lynch Foundation, $1.75 million raised via various donors and $450,000 in public funds. The public money includes $100,000 from the Boston Redevelopment Authority, $200,000 from the city of Cambridge and $150,000 in state funding.

Six in quarantine in Connecticut as US steps up Ebola checks Virus. Fears about the spread of Ebola have mounted in the United States. Connecticut placed six West Africans who recently arrived in the United States under quarantine for possible Ebola exposure, a move that comes as the United States starts new restrictions on those coming from the countries hardest hit by the deadly virus. The family of six West Africans, who arrived Oct. 18 and were planning to live in the United States, will be watched for 21 days, Connecticut state health authorities said Thursday. Officials have yet to say where the family came from. Numerous local health au-

is not airborne. The crisis is forcing the U.S. health care system to consider withholding some medical interventions because they are too dangerous to doctors and nurses and unlikely to help a patient. REUTERS

Study links appetite and stress Eating disorders. Anorexia and bulimia could be more than mental illnesses. Eating disorders could soon join the growing number of mental illnesses that have a biological link. New research shows that a protein produced by some intestinal bacteria could be the source of disordered eating, including anorexia and bulimia. Eating disorders are estimated to affect about 15 percent to 20 percent of the general population, and evidence is growing that they could also be triggered by biological issues related to appetite.
“Anorexia and bulimia are caused by combined effects of biological and environmental causes, says Dr. Serguei Fetissov of the University of Rouen. The social pressure surrounding weight creates enormous stress, particularly on young women, to start diets. “The restrictions involved have a direct influence on the biology of the intestine because the bacteria are put under a situation of stress, and therefore produce this protein that deregulates their appetite, he says. “The social factors would trigger the eating disorders, but the protein would be responsible for its persistence – it’s a vicious cycle, he adds. Now that the protein has been identified, does it mean that some kind of drug to neu-

The actress was at the highest point of her career in 2006 when she confessed to struggling with anorexia – as well as drug use and emotional problems – in Vanity Fair. “I was making myself sick, Lohan said. Play your Cars right
“Ric was a megastar in our most formative years. Before we even picked up our instruments, we saw him as this god on Earth. People that were stars when you’re in your early formative years will always have a power and a charisma that later stars never can. ... Every time we make a record with him, it sounds like Weezer.” Cuomo on how if “Everything” has some sonic similarities to the band’s blue debut, it might be due to the influence of Ric Ocasek of The Cars, who produced both albums.

Back to the good life Live this weekend. With “Everything Will Be Alright in the End,” Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo believes that yes, it will. For a band famous for songs about youthful alienation, with titles such as “The World Has Turned and Left Me Here,” naming an album “Everything Will Be Alright in the End” represents a big shift. But Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo says that change has been hard-won. “We went through so many life stages, creative stages, interests, experiences, ups and downs, and we faced some deeply troubling realities,” he says of the years since Weezer’s previous album, 2010’s
“Hurley.” After all of that, Cuomo says the lesson the band learned is what led them to give such an optimistic title to the album, which came out earlier this month. “I think really, it’s just a way to put into one phrase, with words, the feeling you get from the album,” he says. “Over the course of the 41 minutes, you go through quite a few different worlds and terrains and ultimately it feels triumphant by the time you get to the final chorus.” The band members are so happy about “Everything” that they’re playing every song from the album at each tour stop, though Cuomo assures us that older songs will be in the mix as well. Asked if playing those older songs still feels as personal to him as more recent efforts, Cuomo
Smaller venues: Feels good inside
Weezer will mostly play smaller club shows on their current tour, which Cuomo is a big fan of. “Playing giant venues is great because it’s just such a spectacle from the stage to see 80,000 people. It’s awe-inspiring, but we also love playing for just a few people or a few hundred
replies, “I feel like Weezer at its best is writing from a very deep, timeless and ageless place that I have no problems relating to. Even with our earliest songs, they feel like us.” That’s not to say the new album isn’t personal: “I’m always inspired by the emotional push and pull in my relationships and my daily life,” he says. We ask him to explain the
people, feeling them right next to us, right in front of us. They tend to be the most hardcore fans and will sing every word at the top of their lungs and you know how much your music means to them. That’s what every artist dreams of, and it’s the greatest feeling in the world.”
ominously titled “Eulogy for a Rock Band.” The opening lines of the song are, “Goodbye, heroes, you had a good run, 15 years of ruling the planet, but now your light’s fading.” He promises it’s not a comment about Weezer, but was inspired by seeing one of his musical heroes. “A forefather who’s perhaps the biggest rock star of all time
in one of the later stages of his career,” is all that he will reveal. Though Cuomo is cagey about who the musician was, he does say the experience made him think about how “each successive generation is less familiar with his work, and ultimately that means he and his life’s work are headed towards oblivion, and realizing that, ‘Gosh, if that’s the fate of his work, then obviously that goes for the rest of us, too.’” But everything will be all right in the end, right? Cuomo says keeping to that credo is what gives him the confidence to keep going as an artist. “Even if we’re not 100 percent certain, that’s what we have to tell ourselves,” he says. Satire. ‘Dear White People’ is a portrait of race so sharp it draws blood
••••• Can you believe Keanu Reeves is 50 years old? / DAVID LEE
Whoa. Reeves’ new action movie is smart — but, luckily, not that smart Keanu Reeves returns to gunplay with this action-revenge saga, playing a former megaassassin with a not terribly catchy name who comes out of retirement to kill a mobster (Michael Nyqvist) and his evidently hundreds of minions after the guy’s son kills his beagle. (In his defense, his late wife gave him the dog, and it was super cute.) The lowdown: If “John Wick took itself seriously, it would be bad; if it were a broad lampoon of an action movie, it would be bad. Luckily, it finds a comfortable, enjoyable middle ground: It’s both
a stripped-down, reductio ad absurdum of the vengeance action picture and a giddy send-up of same. The violence is cranked up to 11, but even with Sad Keanu becoming Anguished Keanu, it’s all a cartoon. (There’s no way of counting how many people get shot, at close range, in the face, but all they suffer is a small spurt of blood. Any more realistic and it wouldn’t be fun.) But it’s not just cheerfully OTT gunplay — which is unfortunately set to guitar lick-heavy, head-thrashing metal. It also has its own goofy alternate world. There’s
not simply an underworld of assassins; there’s an actual club, with a membership, a velvet rope bar and its own wry, martini-swilling president (Ian McShane). It’s knowingly ridiculous but also actually witty; at one point Nyqvist stakes claim for uttering the greatest and most loaded exclamation of the word “Oh in acting history. Its tongue is in a very specific place in its cheek, and its particular tone ensures that it never becomes monotonous as a full-on lampoon like “Shoot ‘Em Up. It’s smart, but it’s not so smart that it doesn’t deliver good, dumb thrills. The lowdown: Despite its title, “Dear White People isn’t really about white racism, though there’s plenty of that. It’s about the diversity of its black characters, people often lumped into one or at best two groups in movies and by the media. A razor-sharp satire that often draws blood, it digs into the variety of modern black life: the nerdy aspiring journo (Tyler James Williams) who’s otherized by the white heads of the college paper; the “angry black woman (Tessa Thompson) who secretly likes Taylor Swift; the preppy (Brandon P. Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Legal Fees through December 31st
It’s safe to say that New York City has been good to native Michael Che. The comedian is now co-anchor of “Saturday Night Live” centerpiece “Weekend Update” — and the first black person to sit behind the desk — a gig he left “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” to take on. We talked to him about his new job and how his hometown has changed. What’s your approach to “Weekend Update”? My approach is just telling jokes that I think are funny, talking about things that I would like to see talked about and telling the jokes that I think are really funny. The feedback’s been great; it’s still a process of learning how to do the job better. I feel like every week is a process of getting better, and we’re definitely headed in the right direction. Me and [co-anchor Colin] Jost are hav-

ing a lot of fun. Were you intimidated the first time you sat there? Oh, absolutely. It’s extremely intimidating because you’re doing something that a lot of people care about. A lot of people care about “Saturday Night Live” and “Weekend Update” — they grew up with it, [and] it’s important to them. So it’s very intimidating. It’s like babysitting somebody’s kid. You don’t want it to get messed up on your shift. Everyone always talks about how safe and clean New York has gotten, but do you think it’s actually gotten any tougher to live there? New York is still the toughest city, but it’s different. Obviously it’s a lot more expensive and a lot faster. Technology has made things a lot easier, and it’s a lot safer than it used to be, but it’s still

You’ve done “SNL” and “The Daily Show.” Do other comics resent you for hogging all the opportunities? If they are, they’re thinking of the wrong things. They’re looking at it weird, because the more New York comedians get jobs on “The Daily Show” or on “Saturday Night Live,” if we do it well, it makes it easier MICHAEL CHE for the next guy GETTY IMAGES because they’re always looking for the next one.
tough. Just ask anybody on the 29th when rent is due how tough New York really is. Is there a NYC odor that you think is the worst? Oh, man, there are plenty of New York smells, but the empty car on a crowded subway is the worst smell in New York City. You walk in because you say, “Wow, there are seats!” Every other car is crowded. Then as soon as you get on, you get why that train car is empty — because it smells to holy hell and the doors are closed and you can’t get off. That’s the toughest thing to smell in New York, in my opinion. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

What makes a man or a woman cheat Flings and affairs
Despite recent articles and studies that suggest the existence of a cheating gene ingrained into the DNA of some people (nothing like being the victim of your own biology), there is no excuse for infidelity. There might be explanations, but there is no excuse. Ultimately, if you are so unhappy in your relationship that you are looking externally to fulfill your emotional and/ or physical needs, you need to leave! Close one chapter before starting another, allowing all involved to preserve his or her dignity and honor as things end. Unfortunately, that’s not necessarily the way things go sometimes.
1
There are two types of extramarital relationships: flings and affairs. Flings are the most common, most often involving opportunity, lust and lack of selfcontrol. Affairs are different, as they aren’t fast hit-it-and-quit-it acts of misguided lust and sexual wanting. These are longterm relationships — sometimes involving sex, sometimes not — and they are trickier for someone to get over because there has been investment over time, including an emotional investment. Which brings us to a different kind of cheating for the

Web-based era: online affairs. There are an endless number of Websites that enable affairs (whose highest-spending advertisers are divorce attorneys). But meeting someone online and then quickly transferring the relationship to the real world is really just a fling. Online affairs are different. With social media and community-centric Websites now ingrained into our everyday lives, connecting with others in remote locations isn’t just the activity of a small subculture. Bottom line: Online cheating — without any physical contact — is the most damaging type of infidelity because the entire “connection” is emotional.

Why we cheat In surveying 1,000 men and women (483 men, 543 women), two things are clear: 1) Women cheat just as much as men, and 2) The reasons the genders cheat are very different: Eighty-six percent of the women reported cheating mostly for emotional reasons. Their top three: • Lack of emotional intimacy • Relationship unhappiness • To reaffirm her desirability Of the men polled, 82 percent openly admitted to cheating largely for physical or sexual gratification with no emotional tie. Rounding out the top reasons men cheat: • Just want to have sex or sexual variety • Presented with an opportunity to have sex without getting immediately caught • Satisfy curiosity about having sex with a particular person

Zach Galifianakis annoys Brad Pitt
Here’s a little fresh Internet to brighten your day: Funny or Die has a new episode of Zach Galifianakis’ cringe-inducing faux-talk show, “Between Two Ferns,” this time featuring “Fury” star Brad Pitt. “You play a lot of people that are Nazi-haters, which is weird to me,” Galifianakis tells Pitt (identified on-screen as “Bart Pit” from “12 Years a Salve”), “because you look like Hitler’s dream.” Other moments of wonderful awkwardness include Galifianakis gifting Pitt a bong, asking him if it’s hard to maintain a suntan

Oh, Matthew McConaughey. Sometimes you should just keep your mouth shut. As a lifelong fan of the Washington Redskins, the “Interstellar” star hopes that all the hubbub about the team’s name and emblem being insensitive and maybe needing to change will just blow over. “I love the emblem. I dig it. It gives me a little fire and some oomph. But now that it’s in the court of public opinion, it’s going to change. I wish it wouldn’t, but it will,” he tells GQ. But what really bothers him? The trendiness of it all. “What interests me is how quickly it got pushed into the social consciousness. We were fine with it since the 1930s, and all of a sudden we go, ‘No, gotta change it’? You’re going to find this very hard to believe, but Keira Knightley insists she couldn’t find a guy to take her to the prom. First of all: They have proms in the United Kingdom? Secondly: Are you kidding me, British teenagers 10 years ago? What’s wrong with you?! Instead, Knightley said she ended up going with a female pal. “Neither of us got invited by anybody else. No guys came anywhere near us,” Knightley reveals during a game of “20 questions” she filmed with her “Laggies” co-star Sam Rockwell. “But she had a black tie, because it was black tie.” Well, at least someone treated her like a lady.

Somewhere in here, we should probably scold him for mixed metaphors too. To cap it all off, he pulls in a wonderful little switcheroo and starts talking about the Second Amendment. “It’s like my feeling about gun control: I get it. You have the right to have guns. But look, let’s forget that right. Let’s forget the pleasure you get safely on your range, because it’s in the wrong hands in other places.” I really hope this isn’t a subtle signal that he’s going to go into politics at some point. But, go Redskins? I guess?

Reading between the lines with Jennifer Haigh Interview. The writer behind this year’s One City One Story selection shares some thoughts on the Boston Book Festival. Since 2009, the Boston Book Festival has brought writers as diverse as Salman Rushdie, Alison Bechdel and A. M. Homes to a city so literary it was once nicknamed the “Athens of America.” This year’s festival continues the One City One Story program, which distributes thousands of free copies of one lucky short story around Boston in the weeks leading up to the festival. This year’s story, “Sublimation,” comes from Jennifer Haigh. She spoke with us about what it’s like to be chosen for One City One Story, the value of the city’s book fes-

tival and why writing a novel can be like a bad marriage. One City One Story must really widen your audience of potential readers — has this been exciting for you? Oh, it’s thrilling! You know, part of the challenge of writing short stories is that a lot of the magazines that used to publish them no longer do, so writers who like writing these things are always looking for ways to connect with readers, and it’s not obvious how you do that. So a program like this, where they print 30,000 copies and they have the story translated into several languages, is really just kind of a dream come true.

As a Boston-based writer, do you think that initiatives like this are helpful to the city? I think that the Boston Book Festival has been the most important development I’ve seen in the last few years. It’s
astonishing what they have accomplished in a very short time. ... As a writer, I go to book festivals all the time, and a lot of them have been around a lot longer than this one and have much less interesting programs and much less variety of programming. ... It makes sense to me for Boston to have a festival of this caliber, because it is a great city for writers and a great city for readers.

Terrorism is a deadly disease worse than Ebola
My problem with Mr. Sykes is not simply that he is a millionaire and I am not. My problem is that his success comes with endless self-promotion, arrogance and a complete lack of any actually useful advice (his last column was devoted to the shocking epiphany that reality TV is not real). There are great leaders in this world who have attained success while still managing to retain the virtues of humility and groundedness. Timothy Sykes is not one of them, and his career will ultimately reflect these deficits. KATHLEEN

Pats storylines to watch for with Bears in town
NFL. Chicago is desperate for a win and the Patriots are riding a three-game win streak.
The Chicago Bears will make their second-ever trip to Gillette Stadium this Sunday (1 p.m., Fox) and will be seeking their first win over the Patriots since December of 2000. The history between the Pats and Bears is scant, with the most notable game coming in 1986 when Chicago walloped New England, 46-10, in Super Bowl XX. But Sunday’s game in Foxboro will be one of the marquee games on the Sunday NFL slate, as both teams entered the season with expectations of a playoff berth. The Bears are a desperate bunch at 3-4 but the Patriots know they must take care of business this week before they focus their attention on the Broncos. Throughout the course of an NFL season, nearly every team has a “turning point week,” where things either get better or go South in a hurry. The 2014 Pats have seemingly already encountered their fork in the road as they were blown out by the Chiefs before blowing out the Bengals themselves. The Bears are currently in the pressure-cooker. A few things to look for Sunday: MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos
matthew.burke@metro.us
Four score Week 4
BRANDON MARSHALL HAS FIVE TOUCHDOWN GRABS THIS SEASON. GETTY IMAGES
Rubber meets the road The Bears have reached a crossroads this week. Wide receiver Brandon Marshall called out his quarterback, Jay Cutler, in the locker room following the Bears’ 27-14 home loss to the Dolphins this past Sunday, and a loss this Sunday to the Pats would drop them to 3-5. Chicago is already looking up at the Lions (5-2) and Packers (5-2) in the NFC North standings, so you’d better believe there will be a sense of urgency in the visitor’s locker room at Gillette.
The Patriots defense will be without Chandler Jones for several weeks as the defensive end endured a hip injury in the second quarter against the Jets last week. This was already a defense reeling from the seasonending loss of signal-caller Jerod Mayo. Add in the fact that their best defensive player’s commitment has been questioned this week, as Darrelle Revis has caught flak for being tardy, and this is suddenly a defense with many question marks. Getting pressure on Jay Cutler will be vital, and with Jones out — expect to see Dominique Easley as a primary pass rusher.
Tom Brady threw three touchdown passes last week. / GETTY IMAGES
In the past two weeks, the offense has resembled more of what it had looked like over the previous 10 seasons, with a heavy reliance on Tom Brady. The Pats ran the ball just 27 times for 50 yards against the Bills and just 15 times for 63 yards against the Jets. It’s not as though Brady can’t carry the load. He has thrown nine touchdowns without an interception since the Kansas City game. But the Patriots’ offense is obviously at its best when the running game is supplementing Brady.
Balancing act No Patriots win or loss looks the same throughout the course of a season as they are quite adept at adapting to take advantage of the opponent’s weaknesses week-toweek. But the last few weeks have been a fascinating study in what offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is trying to accomplish in 2014. The runpass balance in the win over the Bengals was as close to perfect as it will likely get as the Pats ran the ball a whopping 46 times and passed it 35 times.
NCAA. Boston College football heads south to take on lowly Wake Forest Boston College led No. 24 Clemson by three points early in the fourth quarter last Saturday, but the Eagles couldn’t seal the deal as Tigers quarterback Cole Stoudt had his way against the BC secondary late in the game. Despite the loss, it was another encouraging performance by the 4-3 Eagles, who certainly seem headed in the right direction as a program. Beating teams you should beat is another positive sign for a growing program, and

the Eagles go into Saturday’s game against Wake Forest (3:30 p.m., NESN) a 13 1/2-point road favorite. The Demon Deacons are 2-5 on the season and are winless in the ACC. Wake Forest’s only wins this season have come against Gardner-Webb and Army. BC’s main offensive weapon last week was once again QB Tyler Murphy. While Murphy only threw for 108 yards, he did rush for a team-high 55 yards on 13 carries. METRO

Maple Leafs on tap for Bruins The Bruins (4-4-0) will be in Toronto to take on Phil Kessel and the Maple Leafs (3-3-1) this Saturday (7 p.m., NESN). The B’s seem to have solved their scoring issues as they have scored at least three goals in their last four games, as of Thursday. There were five different goal scorers for Boston in its win over the Sharks on Tuesday, with David Krejci, Torey Krug, Brad Marchand, Gregory Campbell and Seth Griffith finding the net. METRO
