In coordination with World Polio Day on Oct. 24, NYU Langone is hosting “Polio: Confronting an Epidemic. With an iron lung and other chilling artifacts on display, the exhibit provides a valuable historic context for how the world addresses contagions today, like Ebola. We spoke to Dr. David Oshinsky, Pulitzerwinning author of “Polio: An American Story. What can we learn from Polio about how to handle the Ebola crisis? The lesson is to remain calm but vigilant. In the 1950s, there were 50,000 cases of polio a year in the

in decades. There was a sense of unity in the ’50s. The public had faith in the government. That trust has dramatically eroded. Health authorities must show the public a coherent program to fight Ebola.

The exhibit looks at the history of polio. / PROVIDED Quoted

“The problem with vaccines is people take them for granted. Dr. Oshinsky U.S. — meaning thousands of children in leg braces, wheelchairs and iron lungs. Because of vaccines, there hasn’t been polio in the Western Hemisphere

How has the opinion of vaccination changed? The growth of the antivaccine movement is troubling. Diseases that are easily handled are making a comeback. Parents don’t see polio, so they wonder why their children should be vaccinated. The answer is simple: If vaccination rates fall below a certain level, polio may return. It’s only a plane ride away in our increasingly interconnected world. T. MICHELLE MURPHY @TMichelleMurphy

Six in quarantine in Connecticut as US steps up Ebola checks Virus. Fears about the spread of Ebola have mounted in the United States. Connecticut placed six West Africans who recently arrived in the United States under quarantine for possible Ebola exposure, a move that comes as the United States starts new restrictions on those coming from the countries hardest hit by the deadly virus. The family of six West Africans, who arrived Oct. 18 and were planning to live in the United States, will be watched for 21 days, Connecticut state health authorities said Thursday. Officials have yet to say where the family came from. Numerous local health

authorities have launched similar quarantines or watches on those who have been to Ebola-hit countries, though no other infections have been found through these measures. The virus is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids from an

infected person and is not airborne. The crisis is forcing the U.S. health care system to consider withholding some medical interventions because they are too dangerous to doctors and nurses and unlikely to help a patient. REUTERS

The phone rings. I answer to a familiar voice. “Hey, Tom! What’s going on? Are you up for some fun?” “Oh hi, Mr. President. What do you have in mind?” “Maybe a cold beer after work. Or some hoops!” “I’d like to, but I’m kind of busy. What about your fellow Democrats?” “Hmm … yeah, no. They don’t want to play with me anymore.” Of course, that didn’t really happen, but it certainly could have. With a critical mid-term election looming, there are plenty of Dems who would rather be seen dancing a polka with John Boehner than sharing a podium with Barack Obama. The president’s approval rating is not quite a hockey score, but it is around the lowest he’s ever seen. And that means members of his party who are struggling to win in a few weeks, would

This sort of thing is hard on presidents. Imagine what it feels like to go from being the most popular guy in town, to persona non grata in such short order. One minute everyone wants an invitation to your state dinner, the next they won’t let you grab a picnic table at their barbecue. But it is not uncommon. Even well-liked chief executives, when they start waddling into that lame duck territory of their final term, start

feeling like yesterday’s news and they become unwelcome around those who want to be tomorrow’s headlines. Here is the strange part: Many of the same Dems who are fighting so hard to keep POTUS at arm’s length really do like his policies. They just know that most of America does not. Which leads to ridiculous things like Democratic candidates who won’t even say publicly that they voted for Mr. Obama. Still, that is the state of play for the man who calls the White House home right now. And unless the Dems defy the polls and somehow come out big winners, you can only expect more of it on the Democratic side. “Barack? Former Senator? No, can’t say I’ve ever heard of him.”

Eating disorders. New study finds link between stress and appetite Eating disorders could soon join the growing number of mental illnesses that have a biological link. New research shows that a protein produced by some intestinal bacteria could be the source of disordered eating, including anorexia and bulimia. Eating disorders are estimated to affect about 15 percent to 20 percent of the general population, and evidence is growing that they could also be triggered by biological issues related to appetite. “Anorexia and bulimia are caused by combined effects of biological and environmental causes,” says Dr. Serguei Fetissov of the University of Rouen. The social pressure surrounding weight creates enormous stress, particularly on young women, to start diets. “The restrictions involved have a direct influence on the biology of the intestine because the bacteria are put under a situation of stress,

and therefore produce this protein that deregulates their appetite,” he says. “The social factors would trigger the eating disorders, but the protein would be responsible for its persistence – it’s a vicious cycle,” he adds. Now that the protein has been identified, does it mean that some kind of drug to neutralize it could help treat eating disorders? “An antibiotic would kill any bacteria

without being able to target one kind, so the idea would be to find a selective antibiotic, which doesn’t really exist today, to reduce the production of the protein,” he says. The team’s next step is to develop a blood test to detect ClpB. “If we are successful in this, we will be able to establish specific and individualized treatments for eating disorders,” Fetissov says. Demi Lovato

Lindsay Lohan

In 2012, Lovato revealed in the documentary “Stay Strong” that her struggle with bulimia and self-harm didn’t end after she completed rehab in 2010. “I cannot tell you that I haven’t thrown up since treatment, and I cannot tell you that I have not cut myself since treatment,” said the singer. “This has been a daily battle.”

The actress was at the highest point of her career in 2006 when she confessed to struggling with anorexia – as well as drug use and emotional problems – in Vanity Fair. “I was making myself sick,” Lohan said. When she was 19, “Saturday Night Live” star Tina Fey and her producer staged an intervention. “[They] sat me down, literally before I was going to do [SNL], and they said, ‘You need to take care of yourself.”

Kesha In January, Kesha entered rehab for bulimia and anorexia, which she had suffered from for several years. “She had a breakdown,” her mother, Pebe Sebert, told People magazine. “She called me from the gas station and admitted how much she’d been throwing up.” Doctors told her “it was a miracle she hadn’t dropped dead on stage.” In an open letter for Elle UK, she wrote, “I convinced myself that being sick, being skinny, was part of my job.”

Lady Gaga When she was hit by critics for her 26-pound weight gain in September 2012, Gaga opened up about her long-term eating issues. “Bulimia & Anorexia since I was 15... My weight/loss/ gain since I was child has tormented me,” she wrote for Body Revolution, a section of her website where fans are encouraged to embrace and share their flaws.

Play your Cars right

“Ric was a megastar in our most formative years. Before we even picked up our instruments, we saw him as this god on Earth. People that were stars when you’re in your early formative years will always have a power and a charisma that later stars never can. ... Every time we make a record with him, it sounds like Weezer.” Cuomo on how if “Everything” has some sonic similarities to the band’s blue debut, it might be due to the influence of Ric Ocasek of The Cars, who produced both albums.

Back to the good life Live. With the new “Everything Will Be Alright in the End,” Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo believes that yes, it will. For a band famous for songs about youthful alienation, with titles such as “The World Has Turned and Left Me Here,” naming an album “Everything Will Be Alright in the End” represents a big shift. But Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo says that change has been hard-won. “We went through so many life stages, creative stages, interests, experiences, ups and downs, and we faced some deeply troubling realities,” he says of the years since Weezer’s previous album,

2010’s “Hurley.” After all of that, Cuomo says the lesson the band learned is what led them to give such an optimistic title to the album, which came out earlier this month. “I think really, it’s just a way to put into one phrase, with words, the feeling you get from the album,” he says. “Over the course of the 41 minutes, you go through quite a few different worlds and terrains and ultimately it feels triumphant by the time you get to the final chorus.” The band members are so happy about “Everything” that they’re playing every song from the album at each tour stop, though Cuomo assures us that older songs will be in the mix as well. Asked if playing those older songs still feels as personal to him as more recent efforts, Cuomo replies, “I

Smaller venues: Feels good inside

Weezer will mostly play smaller club shows on their current tour, which Cuomo is a big fan of. “Playing giant venues is great because it’s just such a spectacle from the stage to see 80,000 people. It’s awe-inspiring, but we also love playing for just a few people or a few hundred

feel like Weezer at its best is writing from a very deep, timeless and ageless place that I have no problems relating to. Even with our earliest songs, they feel like us.” That’s not to say the new album isn’t personal: “I’m always inspired by the emotional push and pull in my relationships and my daily life,” he says. We ask him to explain

people, feeling them right next to us, right in front of us. They tend to be the most hardcore fans and will sing every word at the top of their lungs and you know how much your music means to them. That’s what every artist dreams of, and it’s the greatest feeling in the world.”

the ominously titled “Eulogy for a Rock Band.” The opening lines of the song are, “Goodbye, heroes, you had a good run, 15 years of ruling the planet, but now your light’s fading.” He promises it’s not a comment about Weezer, but was inspired by seeing one of his musical heroes. “A forefather who’s perhaps the biggest rock star of all time in one of the

later stages of his career,” is all that he will reveal. Though Cuomo is cagey about who the musician was, he does say the experience made him think about how “each successive generation is less familiar with his work, and ultimately that means he and his life’s work are headed towards oblivion, and realizing that, ‘Gosh, if that’s the fate of his work, then obviously that goes for the rest of us, too.’” But everything will be all right in the end, right? Cuomo says keeping to that credo is what gives him the confidence to keep going as an artist. “Even if we’re not 100 percent certain, that’s what we have to tell ourselves,” he says. CYMBALS rock The Delancey and Pianos this weekend. / ALL PHOTOS BY GETTY IMAGES

Running the first leg of the Music Marathon CMJ. Tight, well-crafted songwriting, fuzzy pop and infectious soul color the first half of our CMJ Music Marathon, the 34-year-old music discovery festival that still prides itself on discovery — and rightly so.

YAWN not boring For fans of scuzzy psych rock, Chicago’s YAWN will be your new favorite band. We caught the four-piece, who have spent the previous five years building a reputation in Chicago’s underground scene, in their perfect environment: the basement of Cake Shop. Swagger, fuzzy riffs and occasional synths morph in late night-friendly tracks such as “Flytrap” and “Under the She.” They’re still a bit under the radar, but they’re well worth your time. YAWN have no remaining shows scheduled, but keep an eye out for changes on www.cmj. com/marathon.

CYMBALS make an impact It’s always a highlight to see the international bands who come to CMJ to make their names known stateside. Londonbased CYMBALS — Is this caps-stylized band name thing a trend? — caught our attention with their synth-y dance rock. Vocalist and guitarist Jack Cleverly leads the charge with his brooding, emotive vocals against a totally ’80s backdrop. In a year, we’ll be glad we caught them on such a small stage. Remaining shows: Friday, 6 p.m., The Delancey; Saturday, 9 p.m., Pianos

All in for Girlpool It’s hard to describe Girlpool, an LA-based guitar and bass duo without using the word “whine,” but this is one of the first times we’ve enjoyed whining! File this group in the twee pop category next to cult groups like Beat Happening and memories of your 4-year-old sister singing lullabies. Remaining shows: Friday, 7 p.m., Pianos; Saturday, 10 p.m., Cake Shop CHRIS LEO PALERMINO @metronewyork letters@metro.us

MOSES SUMNEY WAS AN EARLY CMJ 2014 HIGHLIGHT.

We saw Moses We had the good fortune of seeing LA-based rising folk mastermind Moses Sumney in the confines of a private apartment in the Lower East Side courtesy of Sofar Sounds, a volunteerrun organization which hosts private pop-up shows. The 24-yearold melody maker has collaborated with indie rock superstars Karen O and Beck, but that hasn’t gotten in the way of his mesmerizing solo show full of intimate lyrics, gorgeous voice exercises and electronic loops. Sadly, there are no scheduled CMJ shows remaining for Sumney, but that doesn’t mean one won’t pop up over the weekend. Follow us on Twitter for updates!

Live from New York, it’s Michael Che Interview. The newest “Weekend Update co-anchor talks about what it’s like behind the desk. It’s safe to say that New York City has been good to native Michael Che. The comedian is co-anchoring “Saturday Night Live centerpiece “Weekend Update after time on “The Daily Show. We talked to him about the new job and changes in his hometown.

CATCH MICHAEL CHE ON “SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE WITH HOST JIM CARREY ON SATURDAY AT 11:30 P.M. ON NBC. GETTY IMAGES

What’s your approach to “Weekend Updateâ€?? My approach is just telling jokes that I think are funny — talking about things that I would like to see talked about and telling the jokes that I think are really funny. The feedback’s been great; it’s still a process of learning how to do the job better. I feel like every week is a process of getting better, and we’re definitely headed in the right direction. Me and [co-anchor Colin] Jost are having a lot of fun. Were you intimidated the ďŹ rst time you sat there? It’s extremely intimidating because you’re doing something that a lot of people care about. ... They grew up with it, [and] it’s important to them. So it’s very intimidating. It’s like babysitting somebody’s kid. You don’t want it to get messed up on your shift.

Do you think it’s gotten tougher to live in New York? New York is still the toughest city, but it’s different. ... Technology has made things a lot easier, and it’s a lot safer than it used to be, but it’s still tough. Just ask anybody on the 29th when rent is due how tough New York really is. Is there a NYC odor that you think is the worst? Oh, man, there are plenty of New York smells, but the empty car on a crowded subway is the worst smell in New York City. You walk in because you say, “Wow, there are seats! Every other car is crowded. Then as soon as you get on you get why that train car is empty — because it smells to holy hell and the doors are closed and you can’t get off. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

Kate Wolff placed in last year’s She-Devil Comedy Festival. / PROVIDED

She-Devils are funny as hell Comedy. Women get all the laughs at annual comedienne competition. “When you become a parent, it totally changes how you think about things,” Kate Wolff tells her audience. “I can’t do dangerous things the same, ’cause if I die, he doesn’t have a mom. So, what I do is — I take him with me.” These lines, and the laughs that followed, helped Wolff win fourth place in last year’s SheDevil Comedy Festival, established in 2012 by Steve Hofstetter and Jacob Morvay, former owners of the Laughing Devil Comedy Club in Long Island City. Inspiration came from a set of shows featuring female comedians, or “she-devils.” “People loved it,” Hofstetter says. “We realized that a lot of people want to see

more female comedians.” With a prize of $2,000 and guaranteed work, the She-Devil Comedy Festival opens with 60 comedians performing a duo of fourminute sets. Six finalists are determined by professionalism, stage presence, originality and strength of writing. No material can be repeated between rounds. “You’re being judged on specific criteria as opposed to being just funny,” explains 2013’s winner, Pat Brown. “You don’t have the luxury of interacting with an audience, getting a feel for them or letting them get to know you.” Hofstetter counters: “It does help us see who is great under pressure and who has a wealth of material.” For all the benefits, however, Wolff points out a potential danger: “If you want to be ‘better’ than someone else, you end up missing the point — which is to just create good art.” But the most impor-

Real-World Love Advice

CHARLES J. ORLANDO

What makes a man or a woman cheat Despite recent articles and studies that suggest the existence of a cheating gene ingrained into the DNA of some people (nothing like being the victim of your own biology), there is no excuse for infidelity. There might be explanations, but there is no excuse. Ultimately, if you are so unhappy in your relationship that you are looking externally to fulfill your emotional and/or physical needs, you need to leave! Close one chapter before starting another, allowing all involved to preserve his or her dignity and honor as things end. Unfortunately, that’s not necessarily the way things go sometimes.

TheProblemIsMen.com Charles J. Orlando is a relationship expert and author of the best-selling book series “The Problem with Women … Is Men.” Find out more about him on his website, or visit him on Facebook for real-world love advice.

Flings and affairs There are two types of extramarital relationships: flings and affairs. Flings are the most common, most often involving opportunity, lust and lack of self-control. Affairs are different, as they aren’t fast hit-it-and-quit-it acts of misguided lust and sexual wanting. These are long-term relationships — sometimes involving sex, sometimes not — and they are trickier for someone to get over because there has been investment over time, including an emotional investment. Which brings us to a different kind of cheating for the Web-based era:

1

What Orlando is into this week

If you were saddened by the loss of Robin Williams but are laughing at what’s happening to Amanda Bynes, you need to check yourself. Mental illness isn’t funny.

online affairs. There are an endless number of Websites that enable affairs (whose highest-spending advertisers are divorce attorneys). But meeting someone online and then quickly transferring the relationship to the real world is really just a fling. Online affairs are different. With social media and community-centric Websites now ingrained into our everyday lives, connecting with others in remote locations isn’t just the activity of a small subculture. Bottom line: Online cheating — without any physical contact — is the most damaging type of infidelity because the entire “connection” is emotional.

For exclusive commentary, c visit Metro.us/blogs.

Why we cheat Wh In surveying 1,000 men and women (483 men, 543 women), two things are clear: 1) Women cheat just as much as men, and 2) The reasons the genders cheat are very different: Eighty-six percent of the women reported cheating mostly for emotional reasons. Their top three: • Lack of emotional intimacy • Relationship unhappiness • To reaffirm her desirability Of the men polled, 82 percent openly admitted to cheating largely for physical or sexual gratification with no emotional tie. Rounding out the top reasons men cheat: • Just want to have sex or sexual variety • Presented with an opportunity to have sex without getting immediately caught • Satisfy sexual curiosity about having sex with a particular person

She knows the real Snowden Interview. Filmmaker Laura Poitras talks about filming the NSA leaks as they happened for the doc “Citizenfour.” When Edward Snowden was sitting in a Hong Kong hotel room first leaking his explosive intel, documentarian Laura Poitras was there, filming him. This nail-biting week takes up half of her resulting film, “Citizenfour,” which finally puts a human face on Snowden. And incredibly, Poitras, who now resides in Berlin, was not stopped when she returned to U.S. soil.

LAURA POITRAS / FILMMAGIC

How did Snowden convince you that he wasn’t a crazy person? He gave a me a lot of topsecret documents. [Laughs] That’ll do it. It was one of my early questions:

Visit Metro.us to read about how Poitras hid her Snowden footage from authorities.

The real Snowden

Getting to know him The film spends a lot of time just hanging with Snowden. Even just doing that helps fill in gaps in his story. It certainly debunks certain narratives. If you think he’s an agent for a foreign power, you just throw that one away — burn it and flush it down the toilet. Then you’re presented with a person who makes a decision, and you get to decide what to make of him. He put his life on the line for things he felt the public had an absolute right to know. I agree with him that the public has the right to know. But I also think there’s enough information in the film that you could reach a different conclusion.

Edward Snowden confers with journalist Glenn Greenwald in Laura Poitras’ “Citizenfour,” now in theaters. / RADIUS-TWC

“How do I know you’re not trying to entrap me? How do I know you’re legitimate?” He wrote back and said, “You’ll know it’s legitimate once you get the documents and start to ask for comment from officials.” How was Snowden when you last saw him? He looked a lot healthier and a lot happier. His diet

has not been particularly great. He seemed in much better spirits, with a little less of the weight of the world on him. The person I met in Hong Kong grew up a lot in a short amount of time. There was a naivete I think is gone now. I don’t think he expected to still be able to engage in these kinds of debates. I think he was prepared for much worse consequences.

Are you now off the grid? I still have a Gmail account. But I’ve pretty much migrated everything that I want to keep private off of it. I haven’t been using a cellphone for the last year, because I’ve been going to the editing room and I know that could be used as a tracking device. But now that the film is out in the world, I need to start carrying a cellphone.

Wick” took itself seriously, it would be bad; if it were a broad lampoon of an action movie, it would be bad. Luckily, it finds a comfortable middle ground: It’s both a stripped-down, reductio ad absurdum of the vengeance action picture and a giddy send-up of same. The violence is cranked up to 11, but even with Sad Keanu becoming Anguished Keanu, it’s all a

cartoon. (There’s no way of counting how many people get shot point blank in the face, but all they suffer is a small spurt of blood. Any more realistic and it wouldn’t be fun.) But it’s not just cheerfully over-the-top gunplay. It also has its own goofy alternate world. There isn’t simply an underworld of assassins; there’s an actual club, with a membership

My problem is that his success comes with endless self-promotion, arrogance and a complete lack of any actually useful advice.

Stories to watch as Jets tangle with Bills

NFL. The Jets are finally entering a weaker part of their schedule as they look for a win. The first game of the Percy Harvin era has arrived and ridiculous levels of hype have followed. Harvin is expected to transform this Jets offense, which is the second-worst passing unit in the league. While he can do a lot of good things for this offense due to the fact that in open space, he can be lethal, the Jets still actually have to get him the ball. The Bills have won two of their last three, but also turned in a dud at the lowly Texans Week 4. Metro takes a look at three storylines to watch as the Jets host the Bills on Sunday (1 p.m., CBS). KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer sports@metro.us

Harvin can do a little bit of everything, ranging from being a deep threat as a wide receiver to someone who can at times run the ball out of the backfield and conHARVIN COMPLAINED ABOUT tribute on special HOW HE WAS USED IN SEATTLE. teams. Orton ups Bills’ game

The Bills are 2-1 and the offense has been a tad bit more efficient since the team switched from E.J. Manuel to veteran Kyle Orton at quarterback. Orton completed 72 percent of his passes for 283 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in last week’s last-second win over the

Vikings. “Well I think it’s always a tough decision when you have to make any type of move — whether it be the quarterback or anyone else,” said Bills head coach Doug Marrone, a native of New York City. “But it goes by performance and we were looking for more production and E.J. has taken a step back.”

than anything he will balance the offense. In all likelihood, it will be fellow wide receivers Eric Decker and Jeremy Kerley who will most benefit from the attention Harvin will bring. “I think having Percy is going to help this team in a lot of different ways,” head coach Rex Ryan said. “It’s hard to put everybody down there if you’re oneon-one on the outside and that includes with Decker over there as well.”

ORTON HAS THROWN FIVE TOUCHDOWNS AND HAS A 92.5 QB RATING.

Run stuffers The Bills defensive line has done a tremendous job this year in maintaining their gap assignments, which is a major reason why they’re fourth in the league against the run. Ryan praised his opponent’s defensive front and their ability to penetrate and limit the ground game, saying it is a major reason for the Bills’ strong start to this season. That’s bad news for a Jets team that has been overly reliant on the run game to spur the offense so far this season. If the Jets can efficiently hammer at that line through the opening three quarters with running back Chris Ivory, then they can use heavy doses of Chris Johnson’s speed late in the game to open things up.

Nash to sit out season It appears as though the end of the line is approaching for twotime NBA MVP Steve Nash. The 40-yearold point guard said Thursday he will not play in 2014-15 due to back injuries. Nash, the league’s oldest player, has not practiced since tweaking his back on Oct. 12. The Lakers guard has a history of back problems. He played in just 15 games last season and is in the final year of his contract.
