Most-wanted Mass. suspect caught in upstate New York Southbridge. Gregory Lewis is accused of fleeing the state and going on a violent crime spree.

An accused serial rapist who is among the state’s most-wanted fugitives has been captured in upstate New York, police said. Gregory J. Lewis, 26, was arrested shortly before midnight Tuesday after he tried to flee authorities and crashed his car into the Hudson River in Fort Edward, New York, a small community near the Vermont border and about 50 miles northwest of Massachusetts. Police say Lewis is connected to several rapes, kidnap-
pings and robberies of escorts throughout the country. Local prosecutors also allege he raped a 13-year-old Southbridge girl during over the summer. He had fled the state after cutting off his GPS ankle bracelet, as that case was still ongoing. New York police initially tried to stop the vehicle Lewis was driving because it was missing a license plate, but Lewis fled, ultimately crashing the blue Jeep Grand Cherokee into a river, only to emerge from the sinking vehicle to brandish a gun at a witness. Authorities responding to the crash found Lewis at the scene of the crash and arrested him. The handgun found on Lewis, who was placed at the top of the Massachusetts State Police’s most wanted list after he fled the state, matches the descrip-

Students at Harvard University took part in the Carry That Weight Day of Action on Wednesday, joining with Columbia University rape survivor Emma Sulkowicz in protest against sexual assault on school campuses. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
Students at Harvard University helped carry the proverbial weight of sexual violence Wednesday by hefting dormitory mattresses around campus in solidarity with a Columbia University rape survivor. The Carry That Weight event was part of a nationwide Day of Action in which dozens of colleges across the U.S. held similar demonstrations in support of Emma Sulkowicz, a Columbia University art student who, since September, has been carrying her mattress around campus in protest of her alleged rapists’ continued enrollment at the college. Sulkowicz plans to continue carrying her mattress for as long as her accused
attacker attends the same school, or until she graduates or is expelled. Harvard undergraduate Helen Clark stood in Harvard Yard on Wednesday afternoon handing out colorful markers so passersby could write messages of support on the bed’s blue sheet. “So many people have responded positively to the project, and hopefully when people show that this is an issue that they care about, the administration and the powers that be will pay attention,” said Clark. Harvard undergrad Kara Lessin said she got involved with Wednesday’s demonstrations because she was inspired by Sulkowicz’s bravery.

For Para-Boston, ghost hunting is a science, not an art Boston. A paranormal investigator from Salem is dead serious about his trade. With its history of bloody battles, eerie graveyards and creaky taverns, even some skeptics consider Boston to be a hotbed of supernatural activity, and paranormal investigator Michael Baker is no different. “I can say very confidently from what I’ve found that paranormal phenomenon is real. There are some very strange things happening out there. I have recorded data and evidence. I’ve witnessed it, said Baker, who founded The New England Center for the
Advancement of Paranormal Science, also known as ParaBoston. The Salem resident crouched on the ground at King’s Chapel Burial Ground with his Electromagnetic Spectrum Sensor, but said it’s a fool’s errand to try and capture any paranormal activity in the midst of a bustling city. To catch any action, Baker said one must be patient and wait in silence, typically in the dead of night. Sometimes it takes weeks, while certain investigations are carried out over the course of several years. Most of his cases occur at private residences. He has checked out many homes in Dorchester, East Boston, Chelsea and Everett. “Ninety-nine percent of the

Winchester. Man admits to bludgeoning mother
Bay State beefs up security Massachusetts public safety agencies are beefing up security at public locations around the state, in response to recent violence both domestically and abroad, including the attack last week at Canada’s capitol. “Given recent events here and abroad, public safety agencies are increasing our vigilance in ways that will be both visible and invisible to the public,” said Terrel Harris, spokesman for the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security. Harris said there was no specific, credible threat to homeland security in the state. For security reasons, Harris said, the state cannot detail precise steps to be taken, but he noted that the public may witness random screenings, increased patrols and a greater uniformed security presence at various locations, including Boston’s Logan International Airport. SHNS
The man accused of bludgeoning his mother to death with a rubber mallet inside a Winchester apartment complex confessed to the murder while being led into a police station earlier this week. Matthew McAveeney, 46, is alleged to have killed his mother, Barbara, and her two cats inside her Swanton Street home before fleeing the state. His mother’s body was discovered by police during a well-being check on Oct. 14. McAveeney went on the lam, prompting local authorities to release photos and community bulletins about his mother’s murder. He was arrested in North Carolina last week. Tuesday night, as he was being taken into Winchester police headquarters, he apologized to his mother, family and pets before telling reporters gathered, “I murdered my mother.” He was arraigned in Woburn on Wednesday on several charges pertaining to the homicide. Ebola mission
Quarantine-like monitoring approved for US troops Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Wednesday approved a strict, 21-day quarantinelike monitoring period for all U.S. troops returning from the Ebola relief mission in West Africa, the Pentagon said. Hagel, acting at the recommendation of top military commanders, signed a memo asking for an implementation plan for the monitoring regimen, Rear Admiral John Kirby,
the Pentagon press secretary, said in a statement. Hagel also called for a review of the decision in 45 days to evaluate “whether or not such monitoring should continue based on what we learn and observe from the initial waves of personnel” returning from the West Africa relief mission, Kirby said. The Pentagon chief’s action expanded to all Utroops returning from Ebola-affected countries a policy that was put into place earlier this week by General Ray Odierno, the Army chief of staff. REUTERS

Nurse clashes with Maine over her Ebola quarantine Legal challenge. Lawyers for Hickox said Maine officials would have to get a court order to enforce a quarantine. Saying she will not be bullied by politicians, a Maine nurse is giving the state an ultimatum: lift her Ebola quarantine by Thursday or she will disregard the restrictions and go to court. The saga of nurse Kaci Hickox illustrates how states are struggling to protect against the virus without resorting to overzealous and useless precautions or violating civil rights. Hickox, 33, tested negative for Ebola after returning from treating patients in West Africa. She previously blasted New Jersey Gov. Chris
Christie after she was taken from Newark’s airport and put in a quarantine tent before being driven to Maine to spend the rest of her 21-day quarantine at her home. “I truly believe this policy is not scientifically nor constitutionally just, and so I am not going to sit around and be bullied around by politicians and be forced to stay in my home when I am not a risk to the American public,” Hickox told NBC. California announced on Wednesday that people returning from Ebola-affected countries who have had contact with infected patients will be quarantined for 21 days on a case-by-case basis. At a White House event, President Barack Obama scolded politicians who have sought quarantines or strict travel bans for caving into fears. REUTERS

“If the restrictions placed on me by the state of Maine are not lifted by Thursday morning, I will go to court to fight for my freedom.” Hickox told NBC’s “Today” program.

Authorities on Wednesday started investigating what made an unmanned U.S. supply rocket explode in a fireball moments after lifting off from a launch pad in Virginia, destroying supplies and equipment bound for the International Space Station. The 14-story Antares rocket, built and launched by Orbital Sciences Corp., blasted off from the NASA Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island at 6:22 p.m. on Tuesday but burst into flames moments later. Can you sum up how the past nine months of your life have felt? It’s been weird, man. [Laughs] It’s been nine years on this project in particular, and for it to come together and for people to be actually interested in talking to me and talking about the movie and reacting to it, it’s kind of weird to take in. But it’s cool and it’s very gratifying, especially to see the conversations — at least the positive conversations — that the movie provokes in people that have actually seen it. Justin and Spike What do you think of the possibly reductive Spike Lee comparisons? I mean, it is lazy, but I have to say it’s also really flattering because Spike’s my hero. And the movies they’re referencing, “School Daze and “Do the Right Thing, are iconic films for negative conversations that have cropped up? Most of the negative stuff comes from people who haven’t seen the movie — people who are just reacting to the title or what they think the movie might be about. To achieve this look, do your usual base routine— foundation, concealer and powder. Using a creamy eyeliner, draw a line from your mouth to the middle of your cheeks. Start applying the liner on the inner lip and blend to create a shady effect. Then draw two lines on each side for the stitches.

2
Using a matte brown bronzer, create a hollow along the cheekbones and exaggerate the zombie effect using a black shade. You can use any black powder but use it on the top of the bronzer because it will be much easier to blend.
3
Start with your usual smoky eye and blend toward the eyebrow. Apply black powder along the bottom lash line, then blend to create dark circles. If you want it to look real, you need to use very little product and build and blend gradually. Don’t put a lot on at one time, and apply some mascara on the bottom lashline but not on the top.
‘Eye’ Spook
PLUS
Do your usual base layer by applying foundation, concealer, powder and bronzer. You can create a gradation of color, starting with a nude in the inner part of the eyelid, then a golden khaki in the middle and a dark glittery shade on the outer corner. As usual, the secret is in the blending, as you want to avoid any harsh line. Don’t forget the mascara on the upper and bottom lashes.

Using your black powder, fill in your eyebrows. You can go a bit heavy on this — the darker the better. For the final touch, apply a fair powder and a matte beige eyeshadow on your forehead and bridge of your nose — the same way you’d use a highlighter for contouring to look paler.

Underline your eyebrows with a white pencil and blend using a nude eyeshadow as a base. Apply a red shade in the crease of your eye. Halloween is the one night of H the t year when it’s perfectly acceptable to pretend you’re a someone you’re not. But it s turns out that our costumes ret veal v more about our personalities t and dreams than we might realize. r Author Kelly Rossi has always loved Halloween. a The T author of the new book “Dating the Wrong Men” says “ the t holiday became even more special to her three years ago s when a friend dragged her to a costume party. “This pirate walked through the door, and we both knew that there was something there,” she says. It turns out they were right – Rossi (who was dressed as the Queen of Hearts that fateful evening) and her pirate got married this week. “I think that Halloween is — for me, at least — more lucky than Valentine’s Day,” she says. “People are taking chances and being themselves.” For years, Rossi has informally studied the meanings behind certain costumes and why we gravitate toward them. “Your costume is an expression of yourself,” she says. “No costume is wrong.”
We asked her about the costumes we’ll all probably see this weekend and what they might say about their wearers.
1
His costume is inspired by the news “Those people are on top of current events,” Rossi says, “and they want everyone to know that.”
2
He’s his favorite superhero “They are living out that childhood fantasy of saving the world,” she says, noting that she’s read several studies on the phenomenon. At times, it’s to compensate for feeling inadequate — but not always.
3
He’s dressed as an animal “When you get into animals, it’s more about specific traits of those animals,” says Rossi. “Lions signal strength; owls are wise.”
4 5
He’s a cop or firefighter “They desire to be taken more seriously,” says Rossi. He chooses a skimpy costume “It’s people who put a lot of time into their body and want people to notice that,” she says.
Rossi has worn costumes in each of these categories. “Looking back at the times I dressed as a cop, I was running a business and I was working hard to be taken seriously,” she says, recalling how her costumes often revealed the phase of life she was in. “It’s your one chance of the year where you can say, ‘I want to do this,’” she explains. LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi lakshmi.gandhi@metro.us
Trick or treat
Beware of creeps Rossi warns that Halloween can also be a time that reveals people’s meaner sides. “Look out for people who are using their costume to do obnoxious things,” she says. “Or they are using your costume to do obnoxious things.” She gives the example of a man dressing as a vampire just to have the excuse to bite women’s necks or guys who leer at party guests in low-cut dresses.

VIALE KEEPS THE RENDEZVOUS SPIRIT ALIVE IN CENTRAL SQUARE When the news came earlier this year that Rendezvous, one of Central Square’s underrated and yet beloved restaurant and bars, would be closing, it was a disappointment. But with the recent opening of Viale, it seems like any worrying was misplaced. So far, at least drinks-wise, it’s picking up right where their predecessors left off. To helm the bar program for their Mediterraneaninspired restaurant, first time owners Greg Reeves and Mark Young, both of the nearby Green Street, have tapped Patrick Gaggiano, previously of Fairstead Kitchen and Trina’s. “Basically, we’re just trying to have something for everybody and make it approachable,” Gaggiano says of the cocktail program. Among the dozen on the list, two will be classics — the Widow’s Kiss (applejack brandy, yellow chartreuse, Benedictine, Angostura bitters) at the moment — one will be the “one trick pony,” a

fun play on, he says, a boring cocktail, and the rest will focus on each of the spirits you’d find in a bar well. “If a guest isn’t familiar with something they can just say, ‘Oh, I like gin, here’s [a] gin drink.’” While most of the cocktails are quite approachable, they certainly highlight the au courant ingredients you’d expect. “I want to focus on cool amaros, digestifs and modifiers,” Gaggiano says. “There’s cool stuff coming out every month from Europe, whose flavors and herbaceousness are fun to play with.” Soon they’ll be rolling out their house-infused amaros, like one he’s working on with
Pimm’s mulled with raisins, vanilla bean, cinnamon and apples. Another uses Santa Maria al Monte, with peach tea, orange zest and a touch of maple syrup. “People can get used to it a little bit without getting your mouth destroyed,” says Gaggiano. Some of the best recipes so far include the Owl Farm, made with tequila, lime, beet syrup, allspice and salt. Beet can be a tough flavor to play with, but they found a great workaround here. “Chef and I stumbled upon it haphazardly,” he says. “I’m definitely not a cook, and I don’t know how to cook a beet.” The end result came from cooking beets with granulated sugar, mint and ginger root and letting it simmer to “bleed out all the cool, funky vegetal flavor.” Fans of the bar at Rendezvous will be pleased. “We’re trying to uphold the cult following and that vibe and atmosphere that Scott Holiday had at the bar here.”

Crazy sexy cool SuicideGirls, the Internet’s 13-year-strong bastion of nerdy sexy cool, is hitting the road again with this fall’s Blackheart Burlesque, a tantalizing revue of pop culture channeled through the site’s tattooed, punk esthetic. And if that’s not reason enough to go, supporting the girls puts you on the right side of the current online culture war. We spoke with the group’s founder, Missy Suicide, about crafting the show, keeping it fresh and dealing with trolls. You re-launched your live show last year. What’s new about this year’s tour? There are a lot of new numbers. Last year’s tour had a lot of pop culture references, but there were some non-themed numbers peppered through, but this year we’ve got so many new numbers and it’s all themed out. There’s an “Adventure Time” number this year, for instance, that I’m super-stoked about, and it’s set to a Black Keys song. It’s highly choreographed and super-sexy. How exactly do you incorporate “Adventure Time” into a burlesque routine? The girls are themed out, their costumes are “Adventure Time” and they’re in character as differ-

ent “Adventure Time” characters. It’s so fun to see these characters that you know and love come to life dancing to these modern songs and doing it in a sexy, fun way. You’re going so many different places with this tour. Do you have a sense of how the crowds vary in each city? I feel like there are superfans in every city. That’s the thing that doing a website has taught me over the past 13 years is that there are small pockets of people that are
into the same things you are, the same subcultures you are, in every city and every town all across the world. Before it was you just didn’t know. But there are people around the world who all share the same interests. And with the Internet you can find your kindred spirits a lot easier. Exactly. You can find your penguin or whatever. [Laughs] Is that a “Fight Club” reference?

Maybe. I tend to make a lot of Chuck Palahniuk references. You work so much online. You must have a unique perspective on the recent blow-ups about feminism and women’s issues online. It’s gotten really weird out there. Social media has always had inherent trolls. It’s been this kind of Wild West thing where people feel like they can say just whatever comes to their mind. Just saying the worst things ever. Meanwhile, in our society, we have so many choices available to
us these days, and so now women are gravitating toward things that had been predominantly male-focused, like comic books and video games and stuff. So many of the girls on the site are into geekier pursuits. And it’s that, which is great, coupled with the troll culture, which has clashed in this way that’s really alarming and upsetting. But I think eventually no society really tolerates any sort of Tourettesian outburst, so I feel like at some point the Internet is going to have some sort of check and balance and people will behave accordingly. [Laughs] God, I hope so. I hope so, too. It’s kind of shocking how long it’s taking to get to that place. But hopefully. Sorry for that tangent! Hopefully people will come to the burlesque show! Horoscope
Scorpio|Oct. 23-Nov. 21. Don’t judge others. You will receive valuable information from an unlikely source. A person who is often disagreeable will have answers.
Taurus | April 21-May 21. Surround yourself with people who are encouraging and positive, and strive to be the same. The value of close relationships cannot be denied.
Sagittarius | Nov. 22Dec. 21. Don’t offer to help a stranger with a good sob story. Allowing someone to take advantage of you will lead to regret and loss.
Gemini | May 22-June 20. Touch up your surroundings. Renovations will add value to your property, or at the very least make you feel good. You can save money by doing the work yourself.
Capricorn | Dec. 22-Jan. 20. Your steady approach will be difficult to maintain. If you make a snap decision, let your family know to avoid putting any of them in an awkward position.
Cancer | June 21-July 22. This is not the best time to get into a deep conversation. Plan some solitary activity where you can collect your thoughts before you speak your mind.
Aquarius | Jan. 21-Feb. 18. Be cautious when sharing personal secrets. Private information has a way of becoming public knowledge if you confide in the wrong person. Be smart.
Leo | July 23-Aug. 22. It’s worth your while to go the extra mile at work. Dependable, hardworking people are not always easy to find, and your efforts will be noticed and rewarded.
Pisces | Feb. 19-March 20. Get involved with events or organizations that are close to your heart. The more you believe in something, the more enthusiasm and energy you will offer. Expect to meet people who share your ideals.
Virgo | Aug. 23-Sept. 22. An outgoing and colorful someone will take you by surprise. Don’t be too quick to think this person has all the answers. If something sounds too good to be true, it’s probably false.
Aries | March 21-April 20. Think before you speak. If you are feeling overly sensitive, you may take something the wrong way. Listen carefully and refrain from making a lofty response.

Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22. Little problems can grow out of proportion quickly. Electrical, plumbing or equipment concerns should not be taken lightly. If you are in doubt, check it out. EUGENIA LAST
Nurse’s happiness doesn’t trump national health
exceedingly arrogant, partisan and opportunistic whining, with the support of NYC mayor Bill De Blasio, Sen. Chuck Schumer, Jon Stewart, etc., was getting tiresome. Ebola fears are new to the U.S. and we need to learn as we go. Irresponsible medical personnel are not helping.
If Kaci Hickox feels her human rights were violated, then she is evidently ignorant and needs to read the Constitution. The good nurse’s right to the pursuit of happiness does not apply to threatening the health and safety of others, even if unintentionally or inadvertently, as her fellow citizens in Maine are letting her know. Her
a voter ID. If it has become so difficult in the USA for its citizens to obtain a photo ID, let’s start using the indelible ink, as it is being done in some other countries (in Iraq, for example, where all voters have their thumbs marked with ink, which is impossible to remove for at least two days). But all voters will have to follow this procedure (not only voters without IDs) because otherwise dishonest people can vote twice — one time using their IDs and the second time pretending that they do not have an ID.

BE SURE TO DEAL WISELY AT FANTASY DEADLINE The trade deadline in the NFL has come and gone. Next up? The fantasy deadline. When contemplating deals at this time of year, our No. 1 priority should be getting differencemakers into our starting lineup. We’ve grinded all year to build up enough depth so that we can afford to give up two good players in exchange for one great one. Our second priority should be setting ourselves up with plus matchups in the fantasy playoffs.
NFL matchups Fire up these borderline receivers in Week 9: •
Torrey Smith at Pittsburgh — Without Ike Taylor, the wheels have come off this Steelers cornerback unit.
•
Odell Beckham vs. Indianapolis — The likely absence of Vontae Davis will allow both Beckham and Rueben Randle to roam free.
•
Andrew Hawkins vs. Tampa Bay — Baby Hawk’s role spikes when Jordan Cameron is out. He’s also facing a secondary that loves to give up crooked numbers.
Newton’s apple
NFL
Belichick fawns over Manning Bill Belichick often speaks of lowly opponents with glowing praise. When he faces players and teams that are actually deserving of praise, Belichick cranks the flattering words up a notch. The Pats coach called Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning the “best quarterback I’ve coached against” on Wednesday. “Not to take anything away from the Montanas, Marinos and Elways or whoever is up there with those guys, but [Manning] is tough,” Belichick said, four days ahead of the Patriots-Broncos matchup in Foxboro. “I don’t think there are any weaknesses in his game.”
Thanks to early season injuries and some tough matchups, Cam Newton’s raw stats are not overly impressive. But make no mistake, he’s playing at an extremely high level right now — utilizing both his arm and legs. In Weeks 14-16, Newton and the Panthers will face a dream trio of Swiss Cheese defenses: Saints, Bucs, Browns. His go-to guy will be rookie sensation wideout Kelvin Benjamin, who just went toe-to-toe with Richard Sherman and won.
Buffalo wild things If you want to know just how
Sammy Watkins is enjoying a tremendous rookie season with the Bills. / GETTY IMAGES
bad E.J. Manuel was, watch Kyle Orton move this Bills offense. He’s turning Sammy Watkins into a star and that will open up the field for Fred Jackson, once F-Jax returns from his knee injury. It’s worth targeting all three of these guys for a potential shootout with Green Bay in Week 15 and a cupcake against Oakland in Week 16. Deep leaguers should also keep stashing Bryce Brown if possible.
Hunting our prey Yeah, you’ve heard it before. But now it’s really all coming together for Titans receiver Justin Hunter. He’s played on 94.3 percent of the snaps over the last four weeks, Zach Mettenberger’s big-armed/ vertical style is a perfect fit and Nate Washington injured his shoulder in Week 8. With the Titans quickly spiraling toward irrelevance,
they’ll focus on their young pups even more — Hunter, Mettenberger, Bishop Sankey. Most importantly, they’ll face two of the league’s worst pass defenses in Weeks 15 and 16: the Jets and Jaguars.
FANTASY SPORTS ADAM LEVITAN
Pickups of the week The best adds for Week 9: •
Charles Smith, RB, Bucs: The Bucs are rightfully down on Doug Martin. Sims is their guy.
•
Donte Moncrief, WR, Colts: The size and speed freak is passing Hakeem Nicks.

The Cardinals already had the sparkling record heading into last Sunday’s huge matchup with the then-5-1 Eagles. Now Arizona has that clutch, lastminute, signature win against a top team to boast about.
In our Oct. 1 rankings, the Pats couldn’t crack the top 20. Look at ’em now. Gronk is 100 percent and is scarier than ever. In the open field, he looks like Brock Lesnar playing against a secondary of Rey Mysterios.
That home loss to the Chiefs in Week 7 hurt badly. There was little chance that the Chargers were going to go into Denver on a short week to upend the Broncos. The good news is that their schedule now softens.
What exactly happened to the Indy defense in Pittsburgh? Ben Roethlisberger had the game of his life, throwing for 522 yards and six touchdowns. Still, the Colts should right the ship against the Giants.

Jeremy Maclin caught only two passes for 16 yards in the Eagles’ win over the Giants in Week 6. Maclin caught 12 balls for 187 yards and two touchdowns in the Eagles loss to Arizona. You figure it out.
Had the Seahawks not won it all last season, they would likely be in the 14-17 range. Call ’em the Phil Simms’ of these rankings — living off of past accomplishments and routinely stumbling on national TV.
We’ve been far too kind to the Packers this year and this week’s No. 6 ranking keeps that trend alive. In our defense, all the teams in the 7-15 range don’t deserve a ranking this high either. Someone step up!
The 49ers were on their bye last weekend and because no team in this “barelyabove-.500” range stepped up, they get the benefit of the doubt. They have the Rams, Saints and Giants coming up.

B’s battle injury, inconsistent play NHL. Torey Krug is the latest Bruins player to land on the shelf. The Bruins (5-6-0) will wrap up a mediocre opening month to their 2014-15 season Thursday in Buffalo (7 p.m., NESN), and in order to enter November with a .500 record they’ll have to find victory without the services of some of their top talent. Zdeno Chara has been out of action a week now but the defense took another blow in Tuesday’s 4-3 loss to the Wild when Torey Krug broke one of his fingers. Krug will be out two-to-three weeks. Making matters worse, forward Brad Marchand left Wednesday’s practice with an undisclosed injury. “I don’t know,” Bruins head coach Claude Julien told ESPNBoston.com. “Obviously, he tweaked something and I’m not going to say more than that because we hope

he’ll be in our lineup [against Buffalo on Thursday].” Wednesday’s practice was interesting in that Julien shifted around his lines a tad. Chris Kelly and Simon Gagne joined Patrice Bergeron on one line with Marchand, Carl Soderberg and Loui Eriksson on another. The only line that was steady was the top line of Milan Lucic, David Krejci and
Seth Griffith. Krejci and Lucic lead the Bruins in points so far this season with nine and eight, respectively. Griffith has been tremendous in the past 10 days, pumping in five points in his last four games. MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos
