“Gonna start at Finish line of NYC Marathon & run to the starting line yelling “You’re going the wrong way!” For hours & hours.” @EricStangel
NEW YORK
www.metro.us Weekend, October 31-November 2, 2014
Runners gear up for Central Park. Metro looks at six runners and their reasons for running the NYC Marathon. On Sunday, New Yorkers from all walks will join together to participate in the 44th Annual TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday. One of the country’s most iconic sporting events, the NYC Marathon draws athletes from across
the globe, allowing them to see all of the city’s five boroughs in one stunning, 26.2-mile run. With more than 50,000 runners expected to finish this year, 8,500 of whom are running for charity, the Marathon hopes to raise between $25 and $30 million “to help hundreds of nonprofit organizations support their missions and services.” While past celebrity runners have included the likes of Edward Norton, Al Roker and Pamela Anderson, the real heroes of the
marathon are the regular New Yorkers who compete in the race. From a social media-savvy New York transplant running for the first time to a Yankees pitcher’s wife excited to raise money for her charity to a 79-year-old inspired by the birth of his first grandson, every New Yorker has a different reason to run. Metro interviewed six citydwellers who are gearing up for Sunday. DAN BUYANOVSKY @metronewyork letters@metro.us
Amber Sabathia, 33 Is this your first time running the NYC Marathon? Yes What makes the NYC Marathon special? You always hear about how the New York community comes together to cheer the runners on. I saw this as an opportunity to not only run for myself, but for my charity.

Is running the marathon a lifelong goal of yours? I started this venture because I could no longer ask someone to do something I wouldn’t do myself. However, as I began training, a new reason for participating began to evolve for me. I realized I was doing this to give back, to teach my children that any goal is reachable, but most importantly I

Is this your first time running the NYC Marathon? Yes
What makes the NYC Marathon so special? My family is all here and is so excited to be here to cheer me on. In addition, it’s so inspiring to see people from all neighborhoods coming out to volunteer and cheer for us. It’s one of those moments where you feel everyone’s love.
What makes the NYC Marathon so special? The course and the people: from the bridges to the streets of New York to the people cheering in the different boroughs. Is running the marathon a lifelong goal of yours? I only started running two years ago. But running saved my life. Running gave me a purpose and a sense of self. I never thought I would be able to run a marathon, and here I am about to run my second.
123 Is running the marathon a lifelong goal of yours? My wife passed away from breast cancer many years ago, but the birth of my grandson has given me a new perspective on life. He has given me the motivation to be as healthy as I can be.
inner city youth raise their self-esteem through educational and athletic activities. No child should have to go without enriching opportunities, especially ones that will motivate their dreams.
What charity are you running for? None, but as I said, the birth of my grandson five years ago has given my life new meaning.
What charity are you running for? Team for Kids. I allowed my body image to consume me from a very young age. I struggled emotionally and don’t think children should ever have to worry about their weight.

What makes the NYC Marathon so special? New York was so kind to me while I was in [cancer] treatment - no one looked twice at my scarf-wrapped head or even when I rocked the buzz cut. I was just another New Yorker, although my appearance may have said I was sick.
What makes the NYC Marathon so special? The marathon brings people together - we’re all strangers but during this race we lift each other up and have something we share. I’ve also been living in New York for 10 years and have never seen all five boroughs.
What makes the NYC Marathon so special? It is the greatest way to see NYC on a day the city shows off its best. You run through some of richest and poorest sections and you get to see the changes. The faces, attire, skin color and accents change throughout the course, but one thing remains the same — the people. The enthusiasm exhibited by the spectators and the joy of the runners is so uplifting.

45 6 Is running the marathon a lifelong goal of yours? I can’t say it has been a lifelong goal, but it will be a goal of a lifetime. I never believed I could actually do it. What charity are you running for? I decided to run “unattached” from a cause. If I were, I would be supporting the ovarian cancer world. Ovarian cancer needs more research.
Is running the marathon a lifelong goal of yours? I made a list of things I wanted to do by the time I turned 30, including running a marathon. On the day before my 30th birthday, I will have done everything on my list.
What charity are you running for? Livestrong. So many people have lost loved ones to cancer and are personally fighting it every day.
Is running the marathon a lifelong goal of yours? Based on my longevity and my glee, each year, perhaps it is both. Or, maybe it’s neither — it is just what I do. What charity are you running for? I am not running for a specific charity.

F Train almost hit by drill MTA passengers were dealt a scare on Thursday when a wayward drill bit came spiraling through a Queens tunnel, narrowly missing a crowded F train packed with 800 passengers. The train had reportedly just pulled out of the 21st StreetQueensbridge station in Long Island City when workers dropped the drill bit through the tunnel. The contracting company is in the process of extending an underground well. In response to the sight of the drill, which is 10 inches in diameter, the train’s conductor pulled the emergency brakes. Several of the train’s windows were shattered in the process. Passengers on the train were asked to walk through the tunnel to a rescue train. F train service was delayed for hours after the incident. METRO

NY gives incentives for workers in Ebola fight Manhattan. The state will provide financial incentives to doctors and nurses who go to West Africa. New York officials on Thursday announced a program to encourage health care professionals to work in Ebola-hit West Africa, an effort to deflect criticism that the state’s mandatory quarantine could hamper the battle against the disease. The program will provide financial incentives and employment protections similar to the benefits and rights provided to military reservists, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio said. workers returning from countries with Ebola epidemics have sparked criticism that the measures would discourage doctors and nurses from traveling to West Africa. “We believe that public health in West Africa and the public health in New York are interconnected and both must be
addressed,” Cuomo said. New York City and New York state are coordinating the program with New Jersey; the Greater New York Hospital Association; Local 1199; the New York State Nurses Association; and the Medical Society of the State of New York.
Under the New York program, health workers who go to West Africa will have their pay, health care and employment status continued while they are away. Also, they will be provided financial reimbursement if they are placed in quarantine upon their return. In support of the incentive program, New York City Health Commissioner Mary Bassett said that doctors treating Ebola patients in West Africa “are performing a service for us all by tackling the epidemic at its source.”

Bike-riding nurse defies quarantine Out and about. She says she is healthy and has been monitoring her condition. A nurse who treated Ebola patients in Sierra Leone but has tested negative for the virus went for a bike ride on Thursday, defying the state of Maine’s order that she be quarantined in her home and setting up a legal collision with Gov. Paul LePage. Attorneys for Kaci Hickox, 33, said they had not yet been served with a court order to enforce the 21day quarantine — matching the virus’s maximum incubation period — but remained prepared to fight such an order if necessary. LePage’s office said negotiations with Hickox “have failed despite repeated efforts by state officials

“It’s a beautiful day for a bike ride. Hickox said, wearing a helmet and other bike gear as she headed out for a three-mile ride while police were stationed outside her house
and that he would “exercise the full extent of his authority allowable by law. Hickox left her home in the small Maine town of Fort Kent, along the Canadian border, and television news images showed her
taking a morning bicycle ride with her boyfriend. Hickox had given the New England state a deadline of Thursday to lift an order that she remain at home until Nov. 10, or she would go to court. “I was ready and willing — and remain ready and willing — to reasonably address the needs of health care workers meeting guidelines to assure the public health is protected, said LePage, a Republican locked in a tough re-election battle. Screaming movies Marathon. Halloween is the time to feast on candy, as well as bloody movies. You can even do your own marathon from home, using the Big 3 streamers: Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. If you’re crazy enough to stream all of these horror films for a day, your 24 hours could look like this:
12
p.m.
‘Carrie’ (1976) NETFLIX INSTANT
Let’s start with some comfort food — not that comforting, of course. Brian De Palma’s shocker is still the Stephen King stab to beat — a mix of the sad and the pervy.

Thanks to pesky rights issues, the number of old horror movies up for streaming on the big three are virtually nonexistent. The closest you can get is this atmospheric PreCode number, with a goateed Bela Lugosi lording over a Haitian plan-
David Lynch’s “Eraserhead” (Hulu)
‘Rosemary’s Baby’ (1968)
YOUTUBE
NETFLIX INSTANT
This very creepy short — from an Ambrose Bierce story — is so rare you’ll only find it on YouTube.
The longest film here is also one of cinema’s great slow burns. All that and Ruth Gordon too.

‘Premonition 1:14 a.m. Following an Evil Deed’ (1995)

“Kwaidan” (Hulu)
“Night of the Creeps” (Netflix Instant)
“Rubber” (Netflix Instant and Amazon Prime)
“The Vanishing” (Hulu)
‘Pieces’ (1982) HULU
A sleazy Spanish slasher, this is, on top of being unbelievably, cartoonishly, peerlessly gory, also a laugh riot.
‘Bay of Blood’ (1971)
HULU
This is one-minute long, and here’s why it’s here: It might be the creepiest thing David Lynch ever made. Shot with the world’s first film camera, it’s a dreamy litany of inscrutable images.

Now you’re 16 1/2 hours in; good luck trying to follow this hilariously Byzantine Italian “giallo” from legend Mario Bava. Like “Slacker” but instead with grisly murders, it all builds to one hilarious punch line.

‘The Baby’ (1973) NETFLIX INSTANT
This campy shocker finds a mother who has raised her son to believe he’s still a baby. His age: 21.
Inside this fake foundfootage frightfest lies a real doozy, with “The Raid” director Gareth Evans spending a halfhour piling one insanity atop another.

‘The House 7:30 a.m. by the Cemetery’ (1982) Italian shocker Lucio Fulci is known for his unbelievably nasty — and largely incomprehensible — shockers. This one opens with a stab to the head and gets more unpleasant from there.

Creepy, horrific and sad at once, this French chiller finds a disfigured, masked woman waiting for a new face.

David Cronenberg’s first full-on horror film is his most unhinged, set in a swanky yuppie apartment complex that gets infected with a virus that turns denizens into sexcrazed monsters. It’s a satire on the intersection of the ’60s sexual revolution and the coming ’80s mega-capitalism — though also enjoyable as a straight-up gore fest.

Are Your Legs Suffering Q&A DANIEL RADCLIFFE From... NEEDED TO DO ‘HORNS’ Varicose Veins Leg Ulcers Spider Veins Pain Restlessness

The former Harry Potter swears that his latest isn’t a horror, despite how it may look. Daniel Radcliffe says he got lucky the year after the final “Harry Potter film was made, scoring meaty roles in three very different films: He played poet Allen Ginsberg in “Kill Your Darlings and starred in the rom-com “What If. Then there’s
“Horns, a horror-mysterycomedy-romance in which he plays a young man who, wrongfully blamed for the murder of his girlfriend (Juno Temple), one day awakens with a pair of devil horns and the power to turn people brutally honest. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge matt.prigge@metro.us
His need to do ‘Horns’: “I responded to the script very viscerally. I always know it’s right to pursue something when I feel like if I was to ever see another actor playing this part, it would be like watching my girlfriend kissing someone else. I knew if I watched someone else play this part, I would be really unhappy.
Why ‘Horns’ is not a horror: “There is a modern obsession — maybe it’s not modern, maybe I’m being too hard on modernity — but there is an obsession with categorizing things and putting things into a genre. I actually wonder if [Alexandre Aja, of ‘Piranha’] wasn’t the director if it would be called horror

It’s a classic battle of good and evil, except it’s all going on inside one person. The dilemma of the ďŹ lm isn’t who did it, but what is [his character] going to do when he ďŹ nds out who did it. His favorite horror ďŹ lms: “‘The Shining’ would be the ďŹ rst horror ďŹ lm that ever really scared me in a deep way. Not that it just made me jump, but it creeped me the f— out. Also — and I watched this because I was working with the director — but James Watkins, who directed ‘The Woman in Black,’ his ďŹ rst movie is called ‘Eden Lake,’ with Michael Fassbender

The allure of the devil: “It’s interesting how many times the devil appears in pop culture, literature, plays, movies — it’s a lot more than God. I can think of ‘Bruce Almighty.’ Other than that I’m kind of struggling. The devil is a very charismatic character,
and always has been. He used to be an angel and fell from that. There is the potential for good and evil within him. There seems something relatable about that, like he’s a real human being, instead of God, who is great all the time.

Thriller. Jake Gyllenhaal goes sociopathic in ‘Nightcrawler’ Review ‘Nightcrawler’ Director: Dan Gilroy Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo Rating: R
•••••
Jake Gyllenhaal goes dark in “Nightcrawler.” CHUCK ZLOTNICK, OPEN ROAD FILMS
Jake Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, a thief and hustler who naturally finds himself drawn into the world of freelance journalism, prowling about after-hours L.A. for grisly stories to sell to an early morning news show (run by Rene Russo). The lowdown: “Nightcrawler” isn’t subtle about what’s wrong with modern journalism. This is mostly forgivable; it’s a black comedy, not a po-faced state of the union. The words “if it bleeds it leads” are inevitably spo-
ken, but there are plenty of better jokes. Bloom enters a world where his rivals (chiefly Bill Paxton) fist-pump about scoring killer footage at tragic car wrecks, as though they had just nabbed Lindsay Lohan snapshots. Bloom prides himself on being a fast learner; for example, he quickly figures out that the best way to get an assistant is to find a desperate guy on Craigslist who sleeps in a garage (Riz Ahmed) and offer him a low-paying “internship.” But the film is best as
a study of workaholism. Bloom just takes it further than most. He speaks in business slogans, and his only romantic connection is negotiated via blackmail. Gyllenhaal usually tries to hide his boyish looks with beards and neck tattoos. Here, he uses it for menace. The way he toggles between empty stares and ecstatic “charm” is reminiscent of Scarlett Johnasson in “Under the Skin.” Both are basically playing aliens who skulk about the night, pretending to be human. Male sports fanatics are outsourcing their masculinity The World Series is over, we’re mid-season for football, and I’m listening, watching, and observing — trying to make sense of how crazy some men get with sports. (And yes, some women, but let’s focus this on men for the time being, OK?) It’s a little, um, weird. For so many, it’s not one season, it’s ALL seasons — American football and hockey in September (through June), basketball in October (through June), golf in January (through October), baseball in March (through October). Then throw in soccer and NASCAR just for kicks, plus add fantasy sports during the offseason of all the above. Please understand:

This isn’t a bash on sports. Sports are great: They teach teamwork, fair play, dedication, honor and camaraderie; they exemplify that practice leads to growth and bettering one’s skills. However, I’m not talking about sports or sports athletes. I’m talking about some (perhaps many) male sports fans: men who spend hours and hours and hours in front of a TV watching other people do things all the while claiming, “WE” won or “WE” lost. Reality check: You didn’t do anything. You sat watching others accomplish tremendous feats, but you didn’t accomplish them. Those athletes didn’t know you were watching, and would have won or lost regardless if

you missed the game. And not only does so much time go to watching others accomplishing their goals, but male fans of this sort hate others to the point of fighting/killing fans of opposing teams! Manufactured rivalries have been created to benefit ticket sales and lend themselves to allowing these men to outsource their masculinity. “Outsourced masculinity?” You bet. The behavioral dynamics are undeniable: • He’ll spend endless time following/memorizing stats, players, scores and past games, but forgets his anniversary. • He takes his wedding ring off because it’s “uncomfort-

Full disclosure: I played baseball all the way through school. I was (and still am) extremely competitive. But I don’t feel the need to validate myself through some other man’s activities. Masculinity comes from within. It can be influenced by activities, surroundings, etc., but ultimately it’s an inside job. Men — self-assured men — take care of theirs. They don’t only watch; they act. They learn. They grow. They work hard to capture the love and happiness they want out of life.

A $ign of the times Hip-hop. Ty Dolla $ign is still preparing for his big debut, but he has even bigger things on his mind. Ty Dolla $ign might be hiphop’s man of the moment, but it’s not the present that the 29-year-old appears concerned with. “I’m just trying to come up with the next chapter of music,” he says. “When we first came out, our sound didn’t exist, and now every artist has that sound. That’s what tells us it’s time for the new chapter.” The “we” he refers to consists of himself, rapper YG and producer DJ Mustard, three Los Angeles natives whose self-described “ratchet” brand of hip-hop and R&B has dominated clubs and airwaves in 2014. Mustard has been churning out hits since 2011, when he broke out beyond his city with Tyga’s “Rack City.” YG had a coming out party of his own earlier this year with the release of his critically acclaimed album “My Krazy Life.” And now, following the success of his Beach House mixtape series and a handful of high-profile guest appearances, it’s Ty Dolla $ign’s turn under the bright lights. After spending the summer opening for his Taylor Gang label mate Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign — his birth name is Tyrone Griffin — hopped right into a tour of his own. But even in the midst of his

first nationwide headlining tour, he’s prepping the release of his upcoming major label debut, “Free TC.” It’s a project that Griffin hopes will showcase his evolution.
“It’s a statement and it’s literal,” he says of the title. “I’m taking the money from this album and I’m putting it into getting my brother out of jail and bringing awareness to everybody that gets injustice and gets forgotten about.”
“I’ve been experimenting with different snares, and I’m switching drummers so there won’t be as many snaps. So just expect different sounds,” he says, before cutting himself
short. “I’m not going to give away all my ideas, but it’ll be like when Jimi Hendrix went from the Experience to the Band of Gypsys.” As to whether Atlantic Records approves of its signee moving away from the sounds that made him a bankable star, Griffin claims he and his label execs are on the same page. “They get it,” he says. “They understand that it’s not about following the last hit that came out. It’s about putting out something new. We’re the trendsetters.” NEIL MARTINEZ-BELKIN @metronewyork letters@metro.us

Nothing to fear Re: ‘Nurse’s happiness doesn’t trump national health’ (Metro, Oct. 30) The Fourth Amendment states: “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause ...” Absent “probable cause” our government cannot imprison anybody. Nurse Kaci Hickox was asymptomatic and the medical science clearly shows that (a) people exposed to Ebola are not contagious unless they have symptoms and (b) the degree of contagiousness is proportionate to the symptoms experienced. Unless you show signs of illness you can’t
make anybody sick. MICHAEL MOLDER, VIA EMAIL
Non-readers RE: ‘Un-PC’ (Metro, Oct. 30) I am appalled by letter writer George Christian’s insensitive letter about “Indian Summer.” His disgusting rant suggests that “readers” might be insulted by the phrase. His use of the word “reader” ignores those who are unable to read as a result of being visually impaired or comprehension challenged, or those who have religious beliefs or literary identification issues that prevent them from reading. Stories to watch as Jets face Chiefs
NFL. The Jets are finally entering a weaker part of their schedule as they look for a win. The Jets don’t have an easy task ahead of them Sunday if they want to break a seven-game losing streak. A road game at the Chiefs (4-3), one of the most hostile environments in the league, is a tough task for a good team. The Jets do not happen to be a good team right now. The seven straight losses are the worst under head coach Rex Ryan and the worst since the 2005 season. Metro takes a look at three storylines to watch as the Jets travel to Kansas City Sunday (1 p.m., CBS). KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer sports@metro.us
Familiarity breeds respect
There is a mutual respect between these two coaching staffs, born from the coaches knowing each other very well. Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton was on the Jets staff from 2006 to 2012, serving as a coordinator in New York. And the Jets have Marty Mornhinweg, who was the offensive coordinator for Chiefs head coach Andy Reid in Philadelphia before taking the same position with the Jets. The close ties could make this a great chess match. Reid said the reason he hired Sutton was because he was “a Rex guy.” “He knows that defense and that’s

a phenomenal scheme,” Reid said. “You guys know Bob and the kind of person he is. He also has great relationships with all the people there and the Jets for a number of years.”

They’ve forced just three turnovers (two fumbles, one interception) all season. Meanwhile, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith is notoriously stingy with the ball. He hasn’t thrown an interception in any of the Chiefs’ four wins this season, and has seven touchdowns in those games.
Overrun The Chiefs enter Week 9 third in the league in rushing, using a tremendous two-back rotation. It is still Jamaal Charles’ backfield, even as the Chiefs have scaled back his workload this year. But Knile Davis, who now gives the Chiefs a potent onetwo punch, filled in ably during Charles’ latest injury. Charles is the franchise’s leader in rushing yards, yards per carry and he has the three best rushing games in Chiefs history. The Jets are ranked fifth in rushing defense, in large part because their pass defense has been so bad, teams don’t even run the ball against them. “Both of them are very capable backs,” Ryan said. “The Davis kid is more of a rundownhill type, where Charles can bounce it. He has great vision. ... Both of them present a big challenge for us.”

JAMAAL CHARLES HAS 363 RUSHING YARDS.
Jets receivers adjusting to lefty QB There’s more work to do for the Jets wide receivers this week than simply adjusting to a veteran quarterback in Michael Vick. They also have to get used to having a lefthanded quarterback under center. It sounds like a small thing, but the wide receivers are actually taking steps to reacquaint themselves with a left-handed quarterback. The eyes and the hands have to be retrained, or trained, to receive the
ball differently. “A right hand throws counterclockwise and the left, obviously different. It’s something you have to adjust for,” tight end Jace Amaro told Metro. “You have to work on that; it’s something that’s an adjustment more than just he’s throwing from a different side. It’s a little thing, but when you’re used to it one way, it can change things up for you a bit. So you do need to work on it and every rep

It is well documented the Jets have issues with turnovers on the offensive side of the ball, including six last week. But the defense has its own issues with turnovers — mainly they never force any.

you get can help you, that’s for sure. You have to train yourself, train your eyes, train your hands for it.” Wide receiver coach Sanjay Lal has flipped the switch on the Jugs Machine to emulate the different spin of the ball. “The ball tails off differently,” wide receiver Eric Decker said. “A lefty tails off to the left, a righty to the right. Where it hits your hand, because of the spin, will be different.” KRISTIAN DYER
Jets fans start website to push for Idzik to be fired It’s obvious a fanbase is angry at you when it creates a website for the sole purpose of demanding that you quickly begin to collect unemployment. The website Fire JohnIdzik.com, whose domain name leaves little to the imagination, is calling for owner Woody Johnson to fire Jets general manager John Idzik. Founded by lifelong Jets fans Matt Wolferman of Ridgewood, New Jersey, Jason Koeppel of Hackensack, New Jersey, Jared Koeppel of Fair Lawn, New Jersey and Greg Kohler from Seattle, Washington, the site blames the woes of the 1-7 Jets squarely on Idzik. “The press conference [Monday] obviously was the straw that broke the camel’s back, but to be honest, the manner in which he was hired in the first place was ridiculous,” Jason Koeppel told Metro. “Nobody wanted to take this GM job because it came with the previous GM’s head coach attached to it. And Woody had to hire a consulting firm just to find us a ‘qualified candidate.’” The site documents Idzik’s failures, including the arrests of Mike Goodson and Kellen Winslow. There’s also blame for the draft selection of Geno Smith. KRISTIAN DYER
3 SPORTS Thinning lineup
Calderon out 2-3 weeks So much for getting Jose Calderon back anytime soon. The Knicks announced Thursday afternoon their new point guard will miss two to three weeks as he deals with a right calf strain. Calderon was in the original lineup for the season opener, but he aggravated the calf injury in warmups and an MRI showed he’ll be out longterm. The Knicks traded for Calderon this offseason. Shane Larkin and Pablo Prigioni will play the point in his absence.
