NEW YORK

New York City

Relatively glitch-free day for voters New York’s Board Of Elections enjoyed a relatively smooth day on Tuesday, except for a minor issue with some voters not knowing their polling locations had been changed since the 2012 election.

1

Location problems “There has been a lot of confusion at the polls with people not knowing where they need to be,” said Jon Sherman, a volunteer at voting rights organization Election Protection. “Because it’s the city, there are a ton of [polling centers] and they have to change frequently since there is a cap for each location.”

2

Misinformation problems Another issue arose when New York’s progressive Working Families Party sent out an e-mail alert warning on Tuesday to voters that ballots had been set up to show gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino twice, potentially prompting confused voters to “mistakenly vote twice for governor thinking they were voting straight down the WFP line.”

3

Upside? Better tech As for looking ahead to future elections, New York took a rare opportunity to introduce a new technology to its voters on Tuesday, rolling out a pilot program that found one sixth of poll sites equipped with tablet devices on which voters could vote.” METRO

Cuomo elected to four more years New York City. Gov. Cuomo trounced Rob Astorino in bid for office. New Yorkers have spoken, and have re-elected incumbent Democrats to the state’s top positions. Gov. Andrew Cuomo was re-elected governor with new Lieutenant Gov. Kathy Hochul. He defeated Republican candidate Rob Astorino with about 70 percent of the vote, according to unofficial preliminary numbers on Tuesday night (as of press time). The current governor cast his ballot Tuesday morning in Mount Kisco, in Westchester County, along with his girlfriend, Sandra Lee. Cuomo’s re-election campaign reminded voters he balanced the state’s

budget four years in a row, and created more than 440,000 jobs. Cuomo intends to move forward his Women’s Equality Act, which proposes equal pay, abortion rights and antidiscrimination measures. Cuomo said Tuesday “we began our journey four years ago” to return the state to “fiscal stability and responsibility” and “restore New York as the progressive capital of the nation.” Tuesday night, Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke at Cuomo’s re-election party, saying New York voters today realized grassroot Democratic efforts, and sent a message that “ultraconservatives” and Tea party candidates “are never going to win the day in New York state.” In other races, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, was projected to win re-election with 72 percent

New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli was also projected to win his third term as state comptroller with 72 percent of the vote, according to preliminary numbers (13.2 percent reporting).

Incumbent Michael Grimm, who has also been indicted on 20 federal counts, including fraud, was projected to win reelection to a third term as U.S. Congressman representing Staten Island and Brooklyn’s 11th District with about 52 percent of the vote, early numbers showed (about 45 percent reporting). Democrat Domenic Recchia, who previously served on NYC council, challenged Grimm. New Yorkers voted to approve three ballot measures that would create a 10-person commission to redraw state and congressional districts, allow the legislature to send out bills electronically and allow the state to issue bonds up to $2 billion to fund school technology. Republicans roll up early election wins

Washington

Obama. The White House tried to play down the prospect of sharp changes in strategy after the election. Republicans struck powerful first blows in U.S. congressional elections on Tuesday in their drive to control the U.S. Senate and dramatically tip the balance of power away from President Barack Obama and his Democrats. Obama’s low job approval rating, partisan gridlock in Washington and a U.S. economy that is not growing broadly enough to help many in the middle class were major issues confronting voters in elections for 36 senators, 36 state governors and all 435 members of the House of Representatives. In the Senate races, Republican challenger Tom Cotton defeated Democrat-

ic incumbent Mark Pryor in Arkansas, television networks projected, despite frantic get-out-the-vote efforts by former President Bill Clinton, who hails from Arkansas. Cotton’s win, along with victories by Republicans Shelley Moore Capito in West Virginia and Mike Rounds in South Dakota, gave Republicans three of the six seats they need to gain control of the Senate as of press time. Capito easily defeated Natalie Tennant to win a seat left open by retiring Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller. Rounds won over Democrat Rick Weiland and independent Larry Pressler in South Dakota. In another boost for Republicans, Sen. Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky won his reelection battle, fending off Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes in a race that had been close for months until McConnell pulled away in the polls in recent days. Jolie ‘open’ to pursuing life in politics Academy Award-winning actress Angelina Jolie is “open” to pursuing a life in politics, diplomacy or public service, she told Vanity Fair magazine. Jolie, who won a Best

Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in “Girl, Interrupted,” has already turned her hand to directing. Her latest film behind the camera, “Unbroken,” about Olympic runner, World War II airman and prisoner of war Louis Zamperini, is set to open on Dec. 25.

The wife of actor Brad Pitt and a special envoy to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that her work as a humanitarian has made her conscious of the fact that politics have to be considered as an option. “Because if you really want to make

an extreme change, then you have a responsibility,” she told the magazine in an excerpt from an interview published online on Tuesday. “But I honestly don’t know in what role I would be more useful — I am conscious of what I do for a living, and that [could] make it less possible.” REUTERS

Forbes. Beyonce is the highest paid woman in music for 2014 With estimated earnings of $115 million, more than double what she pulled in last year, Beyonce is the highest paid woman in music in 2014, Forbes magazine said on Tuesday. The huge sum, most of which came from her world tour, propelled Beyonce, 33, from fourth place last year and put her firmly ahead of pop star Taylor Swift, 24, with $64 million, who jumped up one spot from last year

to No. 2. Pop singer Pink, 35, climbed up from No. 8 in 2013 to third with $52 million. The R&B singer’s selftitled album released last December and endorsement deals pushed her earnings up further assuring her the top spot. Barbados-born Rihanna, 26, with $48 million and Katy Perry, 30, who earned an estimated $40 million, rounded out the top 5 on

the annual list. Madonna, 56, who ranked No. 1 last year, failed to make the top 10 in 2014. Forbes compiled the list after estimating pre-tax income calculated for the 12 months from June 2013 to 2014 based on record sales, concert tickets, touring information merchandise sales and interviews with concert promoters, lawyers and managers. OMG! The FORTIS exoskeleton outfits the user with super strength and endurance From “Aliens to “Avatar to “Iron Man, robotic exoskeleton suits have been a staple in sci-fi action battlewear. Now, this cinematic fantasy has become a reality thanks to a super-strength outfit that could increase users’ productivity by 20 percent. Patricia Aelker, program manager at Lockheed Martin, the defense contractor behind the gear, explains to Metro how the exoskeleton transforms the average handyman into a superhuman worker. Where did the idea to make the FORTIS exoskeleton come from? We have been working on exoskeleton research and development for more than five years. Originally we began our research for assisting a soldier with carrying heavy equipment over long distances. The same principles of how

the body works and expends energy can be applied to exoskeleton development for use in industrial settings.

So, this gadget can convert anybody into a superhuman? The FORTIS — meaning “strengthâ€? and “enduranceâ€? in Latin — transfers the weight of heavy tools to the ground. It supports the tool so that an operator only needs to guide it, not bear the weight of it. It is an unpowered system that distributes the weight across hip, knee and ankle joints while preserving the user’s natural movements. Workers using riveters, grinders, sandblasters or other large, heavy tools can operate longer with reduced muscle fatigue while still being mobile and flexible.Â

The exoskeleton allows operators to lift heavy tools like grinders or sandblasters — up to 36 pounds — as if they were weightless. / FORTIS

Rihanna goes for shock value with shockingly brief answers for Elle PAOLA KUDACKI FOR ELLE

Rihanna graces the cover of Elle magazine for the fourth time for its December issue. She sat down with the magazine for a Q&A session full of evidence that Rihanna truly is the Ernest Hemingway of pop stars, using two words where someone like Miley Cyrus would probably use 12. But even with such brevity, her answers are illuminating — terrified of childbirth, loves c’s “Greatest Hits.” Here are some of her more memorable sound bites.

GOSSIP

Between the Beyonce album info leaks, Angelina Jolie considering political office and the Katy Perry-Taylor Swift feud, maybe we forgot to keep an eye on Miley Cyrus. Hey, it happens. So what’s she been doing while the attention has been elsewhere? Snagging herself a Schwarzenegger. Cyrus is reportedly dating Patrick Schwarzenegger, son of the Governator and

Maria Shriver, according to E! News. The new couple were seen together on a recent night out — as well as the next morning at Schwarzenegger’s apartment. Ooooh! Apparently Schwarzenegger likes to play the long game, though. In a 2011 Details magazine profile, he said of his dating life, “My eye, though, is on Miley.” This is either adorable or creepy. Or adorably creepy.

FAST. FOCUSED. HIRED.

Sometimes a fan loves Ariana Grande so much that she has to call the cops on him. At least that was what happened when Tim Normandin, a 29-yearold man from Lowell, Massachusetts, didn’t heed her record company’s request that he stop sending Grande outlandish gifts, according to TMZ. Among the tokens of his affection? Eight Yankee Candle Company candles, calendars featuring puppies and kittens, a $200 anklet from Kay Jewelers and, best of all, a 42 1/2-pound pumpkin, which is apparently not the way to a pop star’s heart after all. Good to know for next time!

Weekend brunch (Saturdays noon-3 p.m., Sundays all day) is $15.95 and includes a half-liter of beer or unlimited mimosas. The kids menu is $4.99 every day. FILM

‘Interstellar’ needs to be seen on film Movies. You really have to view this space-aged film the old-fashioned way. Wednesday marks a milestone: A film is being released on film. “Interstellar” hits theaters today — just not even close to all of them. That may seem odd, given that it’s one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year: the latest from brainy blockbuster-maker Christopher Nolan, with Oscar winners Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. Yet the only theaters getting it are the ones that never threw out their film projectors. Starting today, you can see “Interstellar” in good, old-fashioned, grainy and dangerously combustible 35mm as well as super-sized 70mm IMAX.

The rest of the country’s multiplexes — the ones that converted entirely to digital, which is nearly all of them — don’t get it until Friday. This bold move is a strong push-back against the digital wave that has almost entirely consumed modern movie watching. In 2010, most theaters switched — at great cost — to DCP (Digital Cinema Package), a purely computerized system. Instead of bulky, expensive-to-ship film reels, movies were mere files with a password to unlock. Unlike film, they would never scratch, rot or burn up. All a projectionist By the numbers

249

Remaining theaters in the nation that can show 35mm and 70mm film.

had to do was hit a button. But the files could get corrupted or deleted. And while it’s nice to have sparklingly clean images, they can be too bright. As Quentin Tarantino — like Nolan, another celluloid zealot — once put it, digital projection is like “watching television in public.” “Interstellar” indeed looks great on 70mm. The film is about McConaughey and Hathaway searching through the cosmos for a planet to replace the dying Earth, and its early scenes on Earth are sometimes impossibly dark. But once it gets to space, you can not only see the majesty, but feel it. None of it looks digital, not even the planets our heroes visit. Nolan shot one of them in Iceland, and it really does resemble an alien land. Beyond that, it even looks real. It looks like film.

“Interstellar” opens on film today before being released on digital Friday. Go to www.metro.us to read our review and see where the film is playing today. / MELINDA SUE GORDON, PARAMOUNT, WARNER BROTHERS Directors who ditch digital

Nolan isn’t the only prestigious member of the film club Christopher Nolan isn’t the only one still holding the torch for celluloid. Quentin Tarantino will be releasing 70mm prints of his next film, “The Hateful Eight.” Two years ago Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” was shipped out in 70mm prints, and his new “In-

herent Vice” played the New York Film Festival on 35mm. Others include Wes Anderson, Rian Johnson (“Looper”) and Alex Ross Perry (“Listen Up Philip”). CHRISTOPHER NOLAN SHOT CHUNKS OF “INTERSTELLAR” WITH THE TRUSTY IMAX FILM CAMERA. / MELINDA SUE GORDON

Forget PowerBars — did you know that you get energy from your home? Christa O’Leary, author of “Home in Harmony: Designing an Inspired Life,” utilizes her background in psychology and interior design to transform your over-cluttered digs into a sanctuary. MOLLY CONGDON

Turn off your autopilot Are you guilty of not making your bed? If running out of the house with pillows and sheets scattered is something you’ve become accustomed to, it’s time to make a conscious change. “People don’t realize this, but 80 percent of our daily thoughts and actions are done out of habit,” O’Leary says. “Being aware of this is key. In order to see some changes in your home, you have to discard your bad tendencies and replace them with beneficial ones, which will inspire better living.”

Shop wisely “All of the products you bring into your home have a direct impact on the function of your body and your vitality and vibrancy,” says O’Leary. “Even the

cleaning products you’re using have a direct impact on your health.” Because of this, she suggests going for organic and natural cleaners.

Choose paint carefully Who knew our wall color could have such an impact on our actions? “Red actually increases aggression and our energy level, and physiologically it increases your heart rate and makes you hungry,” O’Leary explains. “So if you are trying to lose weight, red would be the worst color to paint your kitchen.” O’Leary’s home is full of “grounding colors,” such as beiges and grays. “You have to figure out what will support you,” she says.

Clear clutter When you walk through the door after a long day, do you feel relief or do you feel stressed because you have yet to go through the magazines that are scattered across the floor? “The first thing to do within your

home is to take care of the clutter, because it weighs on our unconscious mind,” says O’Leary. “Go through those cluttered spaces and start there. You want your home to nurture you, not drain your energy.”

Turn off your iPhone, iPad and laptop before you sit down at the dinner table. “Technology helps with our efficiency and effectiveness. But on the flip side, people can connect with us 24/7, and we’re inundated with a level of urgency,” says O’Leary. “Unplug tech for a while and make it habitual to say, ‘OK, after 8 p.m. I’m shutting off all technology.’ Give yourself that reprieve.”

Now open. Madewell debuts its first Brooklyn outpost Madewell always felt like the hip, Brooklyn-based little sister to J.Crew’s preppy Manhattanite, so it’s no surprise that the brand finally opened its first outpost in the borough — in Williamsburg, natch. And like J.Crew, which debuted its first BK location two months earlier, Madewell is playing nice with its neighbors. “Williamsburg was a no-brainer for us, but it was important that as we moved in we celebrated the community,” says Somsack Sikhounmuong, head of design. One way was to invite local artists to create exclusive products for the store’s opening. These include nature-inspired gold jewelry by Thursdayborn, indigo ceramic planters by Freundeskreis and limited-edition scents by NOVA. The Madewell team also created a guide highlighting their favorite local spots. Read what made Sikhounmuong’s list and what he expects to see on L train riders soon. What do you love most about the new Brooklyn store? The size. It’s a bit smaller than our other stores, which gives it an intimacy

that I like. We really tried to maintain a lot of the original brickwork, which was too special to cover up. The two skylights are also amazing. To finish the space, we hung original vintage music posters around the store, some from the eighties and early nineties. They are a nod to the amazing music scene in Williamsburg. What Madewell items will the locals love? Our transport tote is great for commuting, very L train-friendly. And one of our jumpsuits is great to dance in. What are your favorite neighborhood spots? Rabbithole for brunch, Toby’s for coffee and Pilgrim Surf + Supply for shopping. TINA CHADHA

Health notes. In wake of Brittany Maynard’s death, explore both sides of assisted suicide The death last weekend of 29-year-old Brittany Maynard, who chose to end her life after being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, has reignited the national debate about assisted suicide. But is the procedure, in the words of the American Medical Association’s code of ethics, “fundamentally incompatible with the physician’s role as healer? It’s already legal in five states — should it expand to allow the terminally ill “death with dignity? “Legalize Assisted Suicide, an Intelligence Squared U.S. forum taking place Nov. 13 at the Kaufman Center (129 W. 67th St.), will explore both sides of this issue with four debaters: philosopher Peter Singer, Columbia University professor Andrew Solomon, palliative care physician Baroness Ilora Finlay and MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics associate director Dr. Daniel Sulmasy. Tickets are $40, $12 for students;

Women’s activewear brand Lole is collecting gently used cold-weather coats at its 112 Mercer St. store to be resold at the Brooklyn Flea Market on Nov. 22 and 23, with proceeds benefitting AmpleHarvest.org. founder of the Berlin-based developer. “Considering we can’t imagine our everyday lives without our mobile devices anymore, the question is not IF we should use our smartphone but rather HOW.” Besides the obnoxious habit of paying as much, if not more, attention to our phones even when there is a real friend or colleague sitting across from us, Dettbarn says our devices are fundamentally reorganizing our priorities — and we don’t even know it. “The way we’re using apps and communication on our phones today is not obvious, and it’s causing emotional and psychological pressure on a subconscious lev--

el,” he says. “We’re losing more and more focus and can’t differentiate between the bits of information and the kinds of functionality that really matter to us.” Enter Offtime, which blocks calls, texts and notifications for a chosen period of time. You can still choose people whose messages will be allowed through, but the idea is to refocus you on the task at hand, whether that’s work, family or friends. To help, intuitive analytics track your app usage, showing you sho what you’re wh doing, when do you’re doing yo it, and how long you’re lo doing it for. d The app lets you set le what feaw ttures, apps and con-

tacts will be disabled or blocked for the duration of the “offtime.” You can set a custom auto-reply to be sent during your break and see what you missed when it’s over. Who knows, Dettbarn says, maybe you’ll start a trend of greater acceptance among your contacts to get off the grid. But don’t think of it as unplugging — if anything, the app means to foster greater connectivity in your life. “It’s not about the decision to be either online or offline,” Dettbarn says. “It’s about customizing the way you want to be connected for each context of your daily life.” Offtime is free, though currently only available for Android devices. Scorpio|Oct. 23-Nov. 21. Your powers of persuasion are undeniable. Once you make a commitment and put yourself on the line, others will join in.

Sagittarius | Nov. 22Dec. 21. Keep up with trends. Sign up for a course about technological advancements that could do wonders for your career. Capricorn | Dec. 22-Jan. 20. Consider an investment opportunity. Do the groundwork and avoid joint ventures. Someone you are close to will be overly sensitive.

Aquarius | Jan. 21-Feb. 18. Put your needs first. Accept the challenge that a leadership opportunity offers. Have faith in your skills and talent. Consider mentoring others. Pisces | Feb. 19-March 20. Broaden your list of potential business partners. Choose a person whose opinion you value and whose drive best matches your own.

Taurus | April 21-May 21. Tie up loose ends. Update your documents, and make travel plans that could help you out professionally and spur you to work harder.

Leo | July 23-Aug. 22. There is always room for improvement. Expand your mind. The knowledge you gain will make you a sought-after commodity.

Pedestrians aggravated by cyclists

Gemini | May 22-June 20. Do whatever it takes to put a little spice in your life. Be a participant and show off your flirtatious personality.

Virgo | Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Follow through on your home improvement ideas. Put a realistic plan in place that will bring positive results for the lowest price.

Re: ‘Oppression against cyclists is great travesty of our age’ (Metro, Nov. 4) Lawless cyclists should be targeted by police over pedestrians because bicycles are vehicles that regularly travel over the speed limit set by the city. “Lawless” pedestrians don’t do the same. Jaywalking pedestrians are not going to crush another human being the way cyclists so often do.

Cancer | June 21-July 22. Don’t allow family problems to interfere with your job responsibilities. Be mindful of where you are, what you are doing and with whom you are dealing. Mediation will be required.

Aries | March 21-April 20. You’ll be faced with trying individuals today. Refuse to let anyone draw you into a futile battle of wills.

Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22. You will experience troubling times if you get into a disagreement. Talking to an outsider about your concerns will give you perspective. EUGENIA LAST

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

It’s bad enough that I have to get cut off almost daily by cyclists (while in a crosswalk no less), but now I have to read about their “oppression” in Metro. Get a grip, Jack — cyclists are going 10 to

15 miles an hour, while pedestrians are going about 2 to 3 mph. We’re just trying to get to work without getting hit by a car or bike. I don’t have an issue outside of the city, but while trying to commute, cyclists are just a nuisance! M. DISCOLO, VIA EMAIL

Pedestrians are usually not bad or lawless but are too often distracted by electronic devices. If someone is walking and talking using an earphone while eating something and slurping a beverage, how can they be expected to pay attention to traffic? GEORGE CHRISTIAN JR., VIA EMAIL

There are three home games left for Jets fans to voice their displeasure over a 1-8 season that will mark a fourth straight season without the playoffs. mote their stated purpose of seeing general manager John Idzik fired. Now they’ve secured not only a location near the stadium for the static billboard message, but also two digital billboards nearby.

According to the four founders of the FireJohn Idzik.com website, there will be one static billboard right on Route 80 at Exit 65 in New Jersey, just a few minutes away from the Meadowlands. The static billboard will be up

in time for the Jets’ final two home games and will come down in midJanuary. There will also be two digital billboards up for a similar period of time along Route 3, located within a half-mile of the stadium. “This is not a story about a bunch of people wasting their money, as some in the media would like to portray it,” site co-founder Jason Koeppel told Metro. “This is a story about changing the face of fan activism in America. One reason why they’re behind the Pats: Their lone loss this season came to the Broncos, the team the Pats blew out on Sunday.

Losing your starting quarterback in the ďŹ rst quarter and winning a road game against a quality foe falls into the category of “dealing well with adversity.â€?

The Seahawks were on the verge of blowing out the winless Raiders on Sunday, leading 24-3 at the half. They wound up winning the game by six points.

Before we go nuts with the Steelers love, let’s remember that their threegame win streak is due in part to the fact that they were all at home.

Jerry Jones wants Tony Romo to play in London so badly Sunday against the Jaguars that he “jokinglyâ€? oered up his wife’s ďŹ rstclass seat on the plane.

Packers (5-3)

The best part of every season for Peyton Manning since the turn of the century has been the game after he had to deal with a Bill Belichick defense.

Ask an average sports fan on the street what the Lions’ record is right now and nine times out of 10 you’ll get “4-4. They’ve played just one stinker.

We now know that the Steelers are at least a solid football team, so the Colts’ blowout loss to them in Week 8 wasn’t as bad as it seemed.

Heading into the season, people were speculating Eddie Lacy could lead the league in fantasy points. He has just one 100-yard day.

NFL. Giants increasingly thin at corner with Amukamara injury The Giants not only lost a game to the Colts on Monday night, they also lost one of the best players on their defense. Head coach Tom Coughlin confirmed cornerback Prince Amukamara, in the midst of a breakout season, is done for the season with a torn biceps. “I feel very badly for Prince Amukamara, particularly the quality of the year he was having, then to have this happen, Coughlin said in his conference call Monday. “He will recover, do well and come back, and we move on.

The Giants are increasingly thin in the secondary. Cornerbacks Trumaine McBride and Walter Thurmond were already out for the season. “We did bring a young man [Mike Harris] in thinking we needed extra reinforcements last week, Coughlin said. “We’ll probably have to do the same thing again, and we will certainly have to spend a lot of time bringing these new people to a point where they understand the basic concepts. METRO
