A 27-year-old Boston Marathon bombing survivor on Monday underwent a leg amputation a year-and-a-half after being severely injured in the blast. Rebekah DiMartino, a Texas resident, was scheduled to have her left leg amputated below the knee at 12:30 p.m. Her husband, Pete, reported on Facebook later in the day that the surgery was successful. “Rebekah did splendidly,” he wrote. “She will be in the hospital a couple days.” Prior to the surgery, DiMartino acknowledged being scared but she remained optimistic. “I will go into surgery and the doctor will finally cut off the one thing that is holding me back,” she wrote in a post
on her Facebook page, adding, “Monday is the day that my new life begins. And I am SO excited to see what it holds. God has given me peace beyond all measure and I am going to rock this surgery just like the rest of them. So thank you to everyone who has continued to support me on this crazy journey. Monday and every day I will continue to be … BOSTON STRONG.” NBC News reported that DiMartino threw a “Left Leg Last Hurrah” on Sunday, which was intended to be a celebration of the future. DiMartino was near the marathon’s finish line with her now 7-year-old son Noah and her then-boyfriend, nowhusband, Pete, when the two bombs went off. According to NBC, she’s had 17 operations since suffering the injury. She now plans on running the 2015 Boston Marathon. DANNY MCDONALD @DMacCash daniel.mcdonald@metro.us

MIT prof changing the view of robots Cambridge. Skylar Tibbits’ robots aren’t made of metal and don’t have motors. Skylar Tibbits makes things move. Or, as he prefers to say, he transforms them, turning pieces of everyday materials — strips of carbon fiber, pieces of wood, strips of cloth — into “robots that respond to external cues like light, moisture and heat. These are not your father’s robots. There are no clunking mechanics, buzzing motors or grinding metal. The 29-year-old designer and MIT professor now spends his days trying to answer the
question: How do you program materials to change shape, change property and change appearance? And what does it mean for consumers? For starters, it means clothes that adapt to the weather, or car panels that morph to make the vehicle more aerodynamic. It could even mean furniture that builds itself or advanced jet engine components. Tibbits has been at MIT for seven years — two as a student and five as a member of the faculty. He launched the school’s “Self-Assembly Lab where he works to create materials that — you guessed it — assemble themselves. “We want things to transform, to reconfigure, to change shape over time, he said. “And so it’s essentially like printing

Painful Endangered turtles Varicose Veins? rescued from the Cape recuperating Cape Cod. The nine Kemp’s ridley sea turtles were suffering from hypothermia. Nine endangered sea turtles are recuperating in Quincy after being rescued from the increasingly frigid waters of the Cape. Representatives from Mass Audubon found the Kemp’s ridley turtles along the inner Cape shoreline. The turtles could not find their way out of the bay and into warmer water, which resulted in their body temperature dropping to meet the rapidly dropping water temperature. Michael O’Connor, a spokesman for Mass Audubon, ex-

plained the problem. “What happens is Cape Cod Bay can act as a hook,” he said. “They get caught inside of Provincetown and they can’t get out.” O’Connor said it was not unusual to find the turtles along the beach during this time of year.
“This is the season for rescuing them along the Cape Cod beaches,” said O’Connor. “They get stunned by the cold.” Eight of the turtles were found along the beach in Eastham and one was found on the Barnstable shoreline. The turtles, which can grow up to 100 pounds, are currently being nursed back to health at a New England Aquarium facility in Quincy. Their recovery could take anywhere between three and 10 months, according to the Aquarium. The turtles usually nest in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2010, federal authorities designated nesting beaches in Texas as a “critical habitat” for the species.

Things college freshmen would do differently in high school Regrets. Learn from the mistakes of some recent high school graduates.
College application season can seem like a blur for many students, as test prep, campus visits and filling out a seemingly endless stream of forms combine to create what can be a stressful start to senior year. The new startup AdmitSee collects and analyzes applications
from students who were accepted to colleges and universities across the country. The site recently asked its members about what they would do differently if they had to apply to college all over again. Cofounder Stephanie Shyu shares their answers with us. Find a summer internship or job for real-world experience. “A lot of students are just not aware of [the opportunities] that are out there,” says Shyu. While internships are usually associated with college and
graduate students, she says there are opportunities out there for high school students if they know where to look. Start prepping for the SATs earlier. Familiarizing yourself with the exam and the material it tests can go a long way. According to AdmitSee’s data, many students say they wish they had begun prepping during their sophomore year. Get involved in after-school activities. “I think that some students felt that they didn’t

Put more thought into application essays The college admission essay is one of the only times during the entire process where the student has the opportunity to let his or her personality shine through. Taking the time to customize an essay for each school could
make a big difference. Shyu also points out that many students use their essays to bolster the weak points in their applications. (For example: Did your grades suffer during your junior year because you had mono or were going through some family drama? There’s no way for an admissions officer to know that unless you tell them.)
join as many activities as they could have or that they weren’t joining the right activities for them,” says Shyu. Visit more colleges. While it may be cost-prohibitive to visit schools across the country before being accepted, it’s a good idea to plan trips to all of the local schools you are interested in. Keeping thorough notes of each visit helps too. LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi lakshmi.gandhi@metro.us

Big life mistakes many people make I’ve been fortunate enough to become successful at a young age, and now I have several millionaire students too, but along the way I’ve made tons of mistakes. Out of my more than 5,000 students, I see the same mistakes being made over and over, so it’s time to break the cycle.
No. 1: Being afraid to take action We are all given various lifechanging opportunities, but many people are too afraid to take action because they’re afraid of the consequences. Even
if their life isn’t that great and they haven’t achieved many or even any of their goals, they prefer the status quo rather than risking a big change from which there would be no going back. My millionaire students were ordinary middle-class people before me, but with dedication and hard work they truly transformed their lives.

Yes, I am a selfmade multimillionaire and yes, my proudest achievement in life is creating several millionaire students, but because I’m a stock trader, money is simply how I keep score of how well I do in my profession — it’s not the goal of my life. A Boston man allegedly stole a woman’s cell phone seconds after a subway train hit and killed her – that’s just plain cruel and depressing!

New twist in the weird feud between Martha Stewart and Goop
CULTURE
I guess in the world of domestic divas, the enemy of your enemy is your friend? Or something? At least that’s what seems to be happening now that Martha Stewart is being all warm and cozy with Blake Lively, seemingly giving her stamp of approval to Lively’s Preserve. As long as it’s a threat to Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop, I guess it’s fine by Stewart. The classiest ex-con in Connecticut put any
previous differences aside when she introduced the former “Gossip Girl” star as her “friend” at her recent American Made Summit. That might have had something to do with the fact that
Lively would totally let husband Ryan Reynolds tap that, as it were. “When we met Martha, she was like, ‘I’ll ride motorcycles with you, Ryan,’” Lively told the crowd at the Summit. “That’s the only woman that can creep up on my man and I would be OK with it.” See? The power structure is preserved.

Plant’s publicist reportedly emailed The Guardian later in the afternoon and called the $800 million number “rubbish.” He did not, however, offer any new hope for an actual Zeppelin reunion.

Writing about something as controversial as war is tricky, but two service members of the U.S. military get it absolutely right in these new releases, out just in time for Veterans Day. One provides insight on the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan while the other has a strong, personal narrative. Either way, you’ll be hooked.
‘Why We Lost: A General’s Inside Account of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars’ By Daniel P. Bolger
This new release (out today) by three-star U.S.
Army Lieutenant General Daniel P. Bolger is getting rave reviews for its brutal honestly and no-nonsense historical perspective. Bolger’s 35-year military career has made him privy to meetings with the most important military decisionmakers in the country, as well as key figures on the civilian side. He was present in meetings when big strategy decisions regarding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were made, and he reveals exactly what went down behind closed doors. Bolger details the specific threats al Qaeda and other enemies presented, as well as who the key commanders were and what played into the decisions they made. He also evaluates the performance of U.S. troops, as well as soldiers in the Iraq and Afghanistan armies. ‘The Last Rescue: How Faith and Love Saved a Navy SEAL Sniper’ By Howard Wasdin
This memoir is about war, love and redemption. Navy SEAL sniper Howard Wasdin was fortunate enough to survive the firestorm made famous in “Black Hawk Down,” but his return home to reality was a harsh one. “The Last Rescue” is about his tough transition to life
after deployment, where he is not only forced to grapple with severe injuries and a long road back to recovery, but also to face the fact that his marriage is failing. It’s understandable that the hardships in Wasdin’s life begin to make him question his faith in God, and therefore his purpose in life. His memoir tells a powerful story of a man searching for faith and hope, while encountering a new, unexpected romance. Reading this book serves as a reminder that battle scars are life-long, and coming home from deployment is by no means easy. Wasdin is also the author of the New York Times bestselling book, “SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper.” “The Last Rescue” is out now. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

Travel expert John E. DiScala, better known as Johnny Jet, gets flown around the world by hotels, airlines and destinations hoping to get his nod of approval on JohnnyJet.com (and, a couple of years ago, his Travel Channel show “Hot Spots 2012”). Sir Richard Branson even gave him a personal tour of his island and spaceship. It’s not a bad gig, and one that has let DiScala amass a ton of useful travel knowledge, from how to fit your life into a carryon to the best travel apps. We caught up with DiScala and picked his brain about how to save money on Thanksgiving and Christmas trips.
Wait for dead week
1
What’s the very best way to save money on holiday travel? Don’t go. “The week after Thanksgiving and two weeks after New Year’s are ‘dead weeks,’” DiScala says. “No one is traveling and everything is on sale. You’ll find deals half the price of what flights are going for over the holidays. If you can wait, wait.”

Choose your day and time wisely

When waiting isn’t an option, “the No. 1 trick is to be flexible,” says DiScala. “Take Thanksgiving: You’re not going to find a deal for traveling Wednesday to Sunday — the airline has no incentive because that’s when everyone wants to go.” Instead, “use your vacation days wisely” and extend the holiday, he says: Fly on the Monday or Tuesday before Turkey Day and return on the Tuesday or Wednesday after. Or, make it a mini-trip by flying out Christmas morning and returning the next day. Once you pick your day,
don’t search for a specific time frame. Be flexible on flying early in the morning or very late at night. “If you’re going to save a few hundred dollars [a ticket], for a family of four, it’s worth it,” he says.
Consider alternate airports
3
Sure, it’s easier to fly out of the closest airport — but you may be able to save big by hopping a bus or getting a friend to drive you to one that’s farther away. The same goes for where you land. Heading to Miami? Check prices for the Fort Lauderdale Airport, just 25 miles away.
AlternateAirports.com has a list of nearby options to major U.S. airports.
Keep on searchin’
4
There isn’t a magic website for finding the guaranteed best deal. “If there was, that would be a trilliondollar company,” DiScala says. Check all the travel search engines, like Travelocity and Expedia, and sign up for fare alerts; Kayak.com gives you that option, as does Airfare Watchdog.com and others. Go to individual airlines’ websites to see what they’re offering. Always look at Southwest separately — the airline doesn’t show up on the search sites.
5
“Sometimes only a certain amount of bargain fares are loaded into the system,” DiScala explains. “If you’re a family of four and there are only three fares left at the bargain price, and you search for four people, all four will get the higher price.” So start by searching fares for one person. Then search for four and compare the two — if the second result isn’t the first fare multiplied by four, try searching three people (or two, as you move down). The goal, of course, is to get the max number of family members the cheapest fare.

American people always lose the election
Senate or Governor’s Mansion is the priority over working together to put cities, states and the country back on the right track. The fact both parties take pride in winning the annual popularity contest with empty promises they know they will never keep, as opposed to getting past partisanship, is why every election feels the same to voters who don’t believe in either party. Whether it’s at the city, state or federal level, success in politics is now measured by who has the most party members, as opposed to how their actions improve the lives of the people they repre-
As an Independent voter with absolutely no party affiliation, every election year feels like a “loss” to me. Between the media, party rhetoric, campaigners claiming their party “won” each election, it shows exactly what’s wrong with our political system and why the country isn’t improving. Having your party “win” more seats has become more important than resolving issues. Controlling the House,

America is finally awake Nov. 4, Election Day, was a beautiful day. America has awakened. After six years of scandals and lies under President Obama, finally we have a new direction. Obama’s socialist America is coming to a stop. America is not France. Obama
should have been honest before he was elected and explained his transformation plan to the American people: that he wanted the government to control every aspect of our lives, starting by taking over the health care system, the education system and then make millions of families dependent on government subsidies. Police have suspects in Vrabel ring heist Former Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel had his three Patriots Super Bowl rings stolen from his home in Bellaire, Texas, last week. On Monday, police said that they believe the break-in to Vrabel’s home was part of a string of recent break-ins in Vrabel’s neighborhood, according to TMZ. Police said they believe the crimes were committed by a black male and black female. According to police, “the woman waits in a car down the block while the man rings the doorbell of the targeted home. If nobody answers, then the couple goes around the back and breaks into the home.”

Luck already has ugly history with Patriots NFL. The Patriots have dealt Andrew Luck arguably his two worst losses as a pro quarterback.
There’s just something about that Colts uniform that gets Bill Belichick’s blood flowing. Belichick, who grew up in Annapolis, Maryland — just down the road from the thenBaltimore Colts, got his first NFL job with the Colts franchise back in 1975 as a “special assistant.” As head coach of the Patriots in the 2000s, Belichick proved to be Indy Enemy No. 1 as he was the main man in stopping Peyton Manning’s Colts from winning multiple titles during the decade. Belichick’s brilliance against Manning is well documented and is still going strong in 2014 — witness the 43-21 whooping Belichick’s Pats put on Manning’s Broncos just nine days ago. But just because Manning is no longer wearing the horseshoe doesn’t mean Belichick has or is about to let up on the Colts organization. Belichick and the Patriots are 2-0 against the “new Colts,” led by wunderkind Andrew Luck. While two games with success barely classifies as a trend, it is important to note that the Pats not only beat Luck and the Colts in their only two meetings — they demolished them. In Luck’s rookie season of

2012, the Stanford product had ripped off four wins in a row heading into his first meeting with the Patriots. To say the Pats gave Luck his first NFL beatdown would be a massive understatement.

Major League Baseball is looking into whether or not the Chicago Cubs contacted manager Joe Maddon before he opted out of his contract with the Tampa Bay Rays, according to the New York Post. Maddon signed a fiveyear contract to manage the Cubs last week. “It’s just wholly inaccurate,” Cubs president Theo Epstein said last week. METRO

ed just 27 of his 50 passes on the day as the Patriots won by the monumental score of 59-24. In Luck’s second season of 2013, he again had led the Colts to four consecutive victories before a meeting with
New England. The final Colts win in that string of “W’s” came in a memorable playoff game against the Chiefs in which Luck rallied Indy back from a 28-point deficit by throwing four touchdown passes and also scoring on a fumble recovery. In the days following that win over Kansas City, the national media put Luck on deck to join Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers in the NFL’s elite quarterbacking class. But Belichick and the Patriots put those plans on hold. The Pats again pounded Luck and the Colts, this time in a divisional playoff game at a soaked Gillette Stadium, beating them by a score of 4322. Luck easily had his worst performance of the 2013 season against the Pats, throwing a season-high four interceptions and finishing with a season-low 53.0 quarterback rating. Luck had no luck from the start of that game as he was picked off by Alfonzo Dennard on Indy’s third play from scrimmage. MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos
