Investigation begins after partial building collapse Dorchester. No injuries were reported after parts of a building fell Tuesday afternoon. The city’s Inspectional Services Department is looking into the cause of a partial building collapse that happened around noon Tuesday on Washington Street in Dorchester. Boston Fire officials responded to a block of stores at 497-501 Washington Street at 12:12 p.m. after what appeared to be the facade of the building falling down, scattering rubble and debris onto the sidewalk. “The outer brick wall let go onto the sidewalk,” the fire department said in an official tweet at 2:43 p.m. No injuries were reported, however the building was apparently occupied when the collapse happened as fire officials said the structure was evacuated. The property is a one-story
commercial building with several businesses, according to fire officials. Building inspectors from the Inspectional Services Department were on scene following the incident, fire officials said, and the property owner planned to have an engineer access structure. Businesses will remain closed for the time being, fire officials said. One of the damaged storefronts bears a sign for “Active Chiropractic Rehab.” Its neighboring storefront appeared to have space for lease. Calls made to the rehabilitation center were not returned by press time Tuesday. Photographs taken at the scene around 2 p.m. showed brick and other building material piled across the sidewalk and strewn into the street. The area was blocked off by yellow police tape and police barriers. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

BU newspaper in danger of closing Boston University’s only independent student-run newspaper, The Daily Free Press, is in danger of closing. The Daily Free Press is strapped with $70,000 in debt according to a press release posted by the paper Tuesday.
A group of Harvard pranksters who previously led bogus tours of Yale were caught red-handed on the New Haven campus in the run-up to this year’s Harvard-Yale football game. The group, a comedy troupe that produces nine-minute satirical news segments called “On Harvard Time,” were producing a new segment, according to The Yale Daily News. The paper reported the Crimson pranksters, decked out in Yale gear, quizzed
Yalies about the upcoming game against Harvard and the school’s athletics. They staged a mock protest against Yale football and encouraged the school to slash funding for athletics and invest more in academics. Members of the group also carried signs, one of which read “God hates sports.” Ultimately, a Yale Facebook group outed the impostors. The troupe pulled off a stunt last year where they donned Yale gear and pretend-

If most of that debt is not resolved before the end of 2014, publisher Turley Publications said it will cease publishing. Cider at core of this weekend’s Craft Beer Fest Theatre District. Craft hard cider — how do you like them apples?
New England Eye Center, affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine, is offering patients advanced treatments for all aspects of vision care through 8 convenient locations in the Greater Boston area.
Organizers of an upcoming craft beer festival hope to broaden the palates of Boston beer lovers by introducing them to the bright, bubbly luster of craft hard ciders. The Drink Craft Beer Fall to Winter Fest kicks off Friday at Revere Hotel’s Space 57, offering attendees roughly 70 beers and over 20 different hard ciders. Drink Craft Beer co-founder Jeff Wharton said the amped up cider offering is in response to an uptick in demand. “Almost all cider brands are quite local. They’re part of the community,” said Wharton, who expects 1,650 people to turn out over the two-day event. “It has such a history here -- 200 years ago, cider was far more common than beer,” said Wharton. “It’s very much a New England beverage.” Hard cider brewer Ross Brockman, 26, co-founded Downeast Cider House in

They’re just interested in what tastes good,” said Brockman, whose cider will be featured this weekend. The brewery produces 7,500 barrels, or roughly 233,000 gallons, of hard cider each year. But demand has been growing, and Brockman anticipates production to triple next year. “I’d say hard cider still has room to grow,” he said. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Methuen. Drill shows off nation’s first school shooting prevention technology Methuen Police conducted a live active shooter drill at a school on Tuesday — an exercise intended to show the benefits of a first-in-the-nation shooter detection system. The system tells police where the shooter is in real time. Manufactured by the Rowley-based Shooter Detection Systems LLC, the technology uses audio and visual sensors to convey where a shooter is located in the building to school officials and law enforcement authorities. The system, which features small smoke-alarm-size sensors, could cost upward of $100,000. Methuen Police Chief Joseph Solomon suggested the system represented a natural progression in school security. By 2002, he said, his department had already started training police how to respond to a school shooting. “Our officers know exactly where the shooter is, how many shots were fired and if

Great job, haters. You’ve gone and scared off Jennifer Lawrence. The “Hunger Games” star insists she has instituted a firm anti-social-media stance, and it’s all because you couldn’t play nice. “The Internet has scorned me so much that I feel like it’s that girl in high school that I’m like, ‘Oh, you want to talk about her? Yeah, I’ll do that!’ Take my hoops off, I’m ready to go,” she says in a
BBC radio interview. But it’s not just scorn that’s keeping her away. Lawrence thinks she just can’t handle Twitter. “I don’t really understand what it is. It’s like this weird enigma that people talk about. It’s fine, I respect that, but no, I’ll never get a Twitter,” she says. Aww, she says “a Twitter” just like my 72-year-old aunt. That’s adorable. “If you ever see a Facebook, Instagram or Twitter that says it’s me, it most certainly is not.” Maybe someone should tell her about her official Facebook page. It just so happens that almost 11 million people have clicked “like” on that page.

In my notes I was always writing “unsentimental, unsentimental, unsentimental.” There was no self-pity. I think that’s a very English, postwar mentality. ... Keep calm and carry on.

Go for the gold Design. The glam metal is having a major moment in home decor. Scroll through your favorite design blogs, Pinterest boards or home catalogs and it’ll be hard to ignore the vast amount of fancy gold objects staring back at you. But when did our current obsession with the metal start? “I think everything
starts with fashion and then trickles down,” says Christiane Lemieux, founder of DwellStudio and executive creative director of Wayfair, about the decor trend. “A few seasons ago, designers like Etro were showing neo1920s deco-inspired fashion. The deco period was the height of black and brass. This was followed by the revival of ‘The Great Gatsby,’ and all things deco just escalated.” Nowadays, you can find just about any product from
a stapler to pendant lamp to dish rack and even crib in sparkly gold or matte brass. And no matter which finish you prefer, these objects add a bit of glamour and warmth to your everyday. But enjoy the trend now, says Lemieux, because soon it’ll be all about copper. “It’s the next ‘it’ metal!” she says.

The end of a life is inevitably tragic — but what if an even bigger tragedy could be avoided by hastening it? That was the eventuality that 29-year-old Brittany Maynard avoided. On Nov. 1, supported by her family and the millions around the world who learned about her choice to end her life before an aggressive brain tumor could leech it from her slowly and painfully, Maynard took a prescribed dose of lethal medication. To get that prescription, Maynard moved with her family to Oregon, one of only five states with a “Death with Dignity law that allows for assisted suicide, in which a doctor can provide medication to end the life of a dying patient who’s deemed mentally competent. Whether the option should be available nationwide, or banned entirely, will be the subject of an Intelligence Squared U.S. debate taking place tomorrow, with passionate advocates on both sides. One of the issue’s supporters, distinguished author and Columbia University professor of clinical psychology Andrew Solomon, has written about his mother’s assisted suicide in 1991 after a years-long battle with ovarian cancer. He calls Maynard “little short of heroic for devoting the final months of her life to speaking about the issue — and giving it a new face. “People tend to distance themselves from the very old and sick until they themselves are very old and sick, Solomon tells Metro. “I think having someone who is young and beautiful and articulate who appeared to have a happy marriage and a close relationship with her parents ... forced people to think, ‘Oh, this isn’t just a debate that has nothing to do with me, this is a debate that could be relevant to me at a moment’s notice.’ Solomon’s mother’s decision was influenced by having watched one of her best friends die of cancer “in pain that was not well-controlled and in a state of relative incoherence. My mother just said, ‘The person I saw in that hospital bed

was not Sandy. She was not the Sandy I had known and loved for many years, and I don’t want you to remember me like that and I don’t want to go through that experience.’ Currently, the law requires that a patient be diagnosed with a terminal illness to have the option of assisted suicide. Though Solomon supports strict guidelines on who that choice is made available to, that standard doesn’t include everyone whose quality of life no longer satisfies them. “I think it’s important there be many precautions put into place so that people don’t commit suicide because they have conditions that are reversible, including some element of depression, which can often be a response to diagnosis of a catastrophic illness, he says. “Having said that, I’ve seen people who have ALS or even people who have Alzheimer’s who are at a point at which they no longer wish to go on, and the question of whether people who have not been given the specific kind of amu-

let of the six months to live, whether those people should have access to the right to die is complicated and nuanced simply because it’s more open to reinterpretation and misuse. He encouraged those around the dying person to show their love by being supportive in whatever way they need. “I think the respectful thing is to try as deeply as you can to understand the wishes of the dying person, to understand the ramifications of those wishes, to sort out whether those wishes are crazy, irrational or coming out of severe depression, or coming out of a carefully thought-through understanding of the value of life.
Solomon, a psychologist, has concerns about palliative care specialists being “often quite agenda-driven,â€? but says that overall, there is more willingness by doctors to express the sympathy they feel for a dying person’s wishes. None of them tried to convince Solomon’s family that his mother should endure the ďŹ nal stages of cancer, but any loss of life aects them, too. “I still think it’s an uphill battle. Medical education is so focused on preserving life, and I think it’s traumatic for doctors to have not only the loss of someone they’ve developed a relationship to but also the acknowledgment of the limitations of medical science. That in some sense, everyone who makes this choice seems to point a light of failure onto medicine, and of course medicine, like all other disciplines, has its great successes — and places where not everything can be accomplished,â€? he says. Net neutrality benefits the average citizen and President Obama is right to support it
Currently, we get fast speeds for everything, but Internet companies want us to pay for what we are now getting for free. It’s a straight-up bad deal for regular citizens, which is why we flooded the FCC with comments against any change. But it’s as good as found money for Internet carriers, which is why they are paid to get the FCC commissioners in their pocket. Now President Obama has come out on regular citizens’ side and is advocating for Net neutrality. If we don’t like the rich
Internet carriers want to make more money from regular citizens by bamboozling us into giving up Net neutrality — giving up our right to transmit data on the Internet without paying more for faster speeds.

Celtics host beat-up Thunder Normally when the Oklahoma City Thunder come to town, it represents one of the marquee dates on the TD Garden calendar. But this season, OKC will be without its top two stars in its only 2014-15 visit to Boston as Kevin Durant (foot) and Russell Westbrook (hand) aren’t scheduled to return from injury until December at the earliest. The Thunder entered Tuesday night’s game against the Bucks in Milwaukee with a 2-5 record. The Celtics have won two straight and are 3-3 on the young season.

Bruins headed north with renewed vigor NHL. The B’s face a tough back-to-back in Canada as they’ll face the Maple Leafs and Canadiens. Monday’s 4-2 win over the Devils at TD Garden was the exclamation point to a very successful homestand for the Bruins. Boston (10-6-0) has won its last five games to vault from near the bottom of the Atlantic Division to three points behind first-place Tampa Bay and one point behind Montreal. The key for the B’s is to keep things rolling this week as the games figure to get more difficult. They are in Toronto (8-5-2) on Wednesday (8 p.m., NBCSN) and then in Montreal (10-4-1) the following night (7:30 p.m., NESN). Along with the Lightning and Red Wings, these are the clubs they’ll be battling for playoff position all season. The common element to this current run has been strong defense and goaltending. The B’s defense has overcome injuries to Zdeno Chara,
Kevan Miller, Torey Krug and David Warsofsky so far, and goaltender Tuukka Rask, who struggled at the beginning of the season, has picked it up in November. Boston’s offense still isn’t exactly explosive, but the good sign is that many of its top players are starting to play up to their capabilities. With a goal and two assists on Monday, Patrice Bergeron has two goals and four assists in his last four games. Linemate Reilly Smith had a goal and an assist Monday, giving him a modest three-game point streak. Carl Soderberg had a power-play goal against New Jersey and, quietly, he’s been the Bruins’ most consistent forward with two goals and four assists in his last five games. Boston lost 6-4 at Montreal on Oct. 16, but came back on Oct. 25 to beat Toronto 4-1. It’s likely that Niklas Svedberg will make his first start since Oct. 30 on Wednesday against Toronto, giving Rask some rest before he faces the Canadiens. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

In late September, who would have guessed that Tom Brady, Mark Sanchez and Drew Stanton would have been the quarterbacks of the three best teams in the NFL in early November?
Peyton Manning threw for five touchdowns against Oakland. To borrow a popular phrase from 2012, ironically the last season Wes Welker had a 100yard receiving day: We’re not impressed.
If you like football, go ahead and tell your family now. You won’t be talking to them on Thanksgiving with the Lions and Cowboys both good at the same time for the first time since 1993.
You can look at the Packers one of two ways: Either you say they haven’t beaten anyone of note yet, or you could say there’s no shame in losing at Seattle, at Detroit and at New Orleans.

Larry Fitzgerald has over 100 yards receiving in two of his last three games, John and Jaron Brown are coming on strong and Andre Ellington and Michael Floyd are still capable of huge outings.
The ’Hawks have won three games in a row, and suddenly no one cares that Pete Carroll and Marshawn Lynch don’t talk to one another. Seattle does have a brutal stretch of schedule coming up, however.
It’s entirely possible that the Colts will be exposed by the Patriots this Sunday night. Remember, it was just a few weeks back that Indy allowed 51 points to the now-laughable Steelers.
Their 17-13 win at Buffalo this past Sunday may have been their most impressive victory of the season. And this is a team that blew out the Pats at home and beat San Diego on the road. The gritty wins linger.
