NY doctor declared Ebola-free, released Manhattan. The doctor went home after spending weeks in quarantine at Bellevue Hospital. Dr. Craig Spencer, previously the only Ebola patient in the United States, was released from Bellevue Hospital on Tuesday. New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Spencer, 33, has been cured of the virus and is no longer a public health risk. Health officials held a press conference at the hospital on Tuesday morning to discuss Spencer’s

release. The physician, who had been treating Ebola patients in Guinea with Doctors Without Borders before he returned to New York, made a brief statement and was introduced by Mayor Bill de Blasio as a “true American hero and example to us all.” “Today I am healthy and no longer infectious,” said Spencer, adding his early detection and reporting, along with “exceptional treatment, speaks to the effectiveness of the protocols.” Spencer was transported to the hospital on Oct. 23, several days after he returned from West Africa. “While my case has garnered international attention, it is important to remember that my infection represents but a fraction of the more than 13,000 reported to date in West

He also stressed the importance of supporting health workers helping the people of West Africa. The doctor asked the press to focus on covering Ebola in West Africa. As of Nov. 4, 4,950 people had died in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia from the virus. An additional 10 deaths came from Nigeria, Mali and the United States. Health Commissioner Dr.

Mary Bassett said she was “proud” to see Spencer released. “Our months of planning and preparation have indeed paid off. Although we will remain vigilant, today is another reminder of how truly fortunate we all are to reside in a city with the best public hospital system and health department anywhere,” she said. A Queens couple was busted on Tuesday in a string of pickpocketing incidents and robberies aimed at women with baby strollers, according to Queens District Attorney Richard Brown. The defendants, Luis A. Chango, 45, and Rosa Jerez, 37, targeted over a dozen female shoppers with baby strollers between August and November, Brown said. In most instances, Jerez acted as a lookout for her husband, who removed property from victims as they shopped. In September, Chango was spotted reaching into a baby’s stroller and snatching an iPhone from a baby, causing the child to cry as the defendants fled the scene. “With the holiday season fast approaching and retail outlets becoming crowded, shoppers should be especially mindful of pickpockets and purse snatchers,” Brown said. Chango and Jerez have been charged with multiple crimes such as grand larceny, identity theft and petty larceny. If convicted, Chango and Jerez face up to 38 and 23 years in prison. METRO

The MTA is weighing whether to raise the cost of a subway ride by 25 cents to $2.75 as it seeks ways to implement a previously approved 4 percent fare increase next year, a board member said. The mass-transit system is reviewing ways to apply the increase, including a toll increase of as much as $1 for some trucks. One strategy is to boost the base subway and bus fare, increase the seven-day pass by $1 to $31 and the 30-day card by $4.50 to $116.50, Mitchell Pally, an MTA board member, said. Bonuses on base fares would rise to 11 percent from 5 percent. Another option would keep the base fare at $2.50 while cutting its bonus. Price increases on weekly and monthly passes would match those in the other plan, Pally said. One revenue idea would boost cash tolls on some trucks by 50 cents to $1, Pally said. “We know we need added revenues to make

The capital marked Veterans Day on Tuesday with ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery where Vice President Joe Biden said the 23 million U.S. veterans were the backbone of the nation. The commemoration at Arlington, where more than 40,000 military personnel and their families are buried, was part of

events that included a giant concert featuring Bruce Springsteen and Rihanna. A bugler played “Taps” after Biden laid a wreath at Arlington’s Tomb of the Unknowns. Apple Inc. was ordered to face a federal lawsuit claiming it failed to tell consumers that its messaging system would block them from receiving text messages if they switched to Android-based smartphones from iPhones. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California, said Apple must face plaintiff Adrienne Moore’s claim that the message blocking interfered with her contract with Verizon Wireless for wireless service, which she kept after switching in April to a Samsung Galaxy S5 from an iPhone 4.

The case involves a plaintiff who switched to a Galaxy S5. / GETTY IMAGES

Moore, who seeks classaction status and unspecified damages, claimed that Apple failed to disclose how its iOS 5 software operating system would obstruct the delivery of “countless” messages from other Apple device users if iPhone users switched to non-Apple devices. In a Monday night decision, Koh said Moore deserved a chance to show

Apple disrupted her wireless service contract and violated a California unfair competition law by blocking messages meant for her. “Plaintiff does not have to allege an absolute right to receive every text message in order to allege that Apple’s intentional acts have caused an actual breach or disruption of the contractual relationship,” Koh wrote. Rolling Stones in insurance battle over canceled tour dates The Rolling Stones are locked in a legal battle with an insurance company over a $12.7 million claim for canceled tour dates following the March death of Mick Jagger’s girlfriend, designer L’Wren Scott. A judge granted insur-

ance underwriters, who have denied the claim by the rock group, permission to investigate the mental state of Scott, who committed suicide in her upscale New York apartment on March 17 at the age of 49. The U.S. District Court of Utah ruled last month that the underwriters could question Scott’s brother about her

medical and mental history. The band took out a $23.9 million policy before their 2014 tour to cover cancellations due to the death of family members and others listed in the policy, which included Scott. The underwriters said they denied the claim because Scott’s death was intentional and not a sudden, unforeseen event. REUTERS

Ten women die at sterilization ‘camp’ in India

The United States will be “very clear” with China if it veers beyond the bounds of international norms on cybersecurity and other issues, a senior U.S. official said on Tuesday ahead of a summit between the leaders of the two countries. The comments by Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser, come at a time when Beijing is increasingly assertive in the region and has been pushing to establish institutions that it aims to lead. Cyber-spying, maritime disputes, and a wide range of other issues will come up when President Barack Obama holds formal talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday, Rhodes said. REUTERS

Ten women died and 14 were in serious condition after botched operations at a government mass sterilization “camp” in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, officials said on Tuesday. The women fell ill on Monday, two days after surgery at a so-called family planning camp at a village. Such camps are held regularly in Chhattisgarh and other Indian states as part of a long-running effort to control India’s booming population. “It was a serious matter of negligence. It was unfortunate,” the chief minister of the state, Raman Singh, told reporters. Four officials have been suspended and an investigation will be held, he said. REUTERS

Obama and Putin are odd couple at Beijing summit Awkward. Obama and Putin have never had anything close to personal chemistry. A few brief encounters between Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin during an Asia-Pacific summit in China on Tuesday spoke volumes about the chilly state of relations between the United States and Russia. With the two men crossing paths twice this week, first in Beijing and later at a G20 summit in Brisbane, Australia, there was little chance they could avoid interacting on the international stage — and with the eyes of the world press and fellow leaders upon them. Drivers faced a second day of unseasonably heavy snow and some businesses and schools shut down in the northern Great Lakes region on Tuesday, while a cold front was expected to push cold air south as far as Texas on Wednesday. “Temperatures will be 20 to 40 degrees below average from just east of the Rockies to the Plains,” the National Weather Service said on its website. The cold was expected to extend as far as Texas on Wednesday, with freeze warnings issued for about two dozen counties including Dallas. Though the day began mildly in some parts of the Midwest, temperatures dropped quickly. Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport weather monitoring station temperatures plunged to 40 degrees at 9 a.m., down from 58 degrees at around midnight. Farther north, more

Great job, haters. You’ve gone and scared off Jennifer Lawrence. The “Hunger Games” star insists she has instituted a firm anti-social media stance, and it’s all because you couldn’t play nice. “The Internet has scorned me so much that I feel like it’s that girl in high school that I’m like, ‘Oh, you want to talk about her? Yeah, I’ll do that!’ Take my hoops off, I’m ready to go,” she says in a BBC radio interview. But it’s not just scorn that’s keep-

ing her away. Lawrence thinks she just can’t handle Twitter. “I don’t really understand what it is. It’s like this weird enigma that people talk about. It’s fine, I respect that, but no, I’ll never get a Twitter,” she says. Aww, she says “a Twitter” just like my 72-year-old aunt. That’s adorable. “If you ever see a Facebook, Instagram or Twitter that says it’s me, it most certainly is not.” Maybe someone should tell her about her official Facebook page. It just so happens that almost 11 million people have clicked “like” on that page.

Cos and effect: Don’t ask people to meme you if you have remained mum on certain sexual assault allegations

In other “totally not getting the Internet” news, Bill Cosby got more than he bargained for this week when he asked fans online to “meme” him, offering a meme generator on his site where fans could put block text over photos of him from “The Cosby Show” a la Lolcats. (Remember Lolcats?) Well, a lot of people used it, only they used it to reference allegations of rape made against the comic a decade ago. His team deleted his initial tweet and took down the meme generator as fast as possible, but not before some choice screen grabs went up.

Felicity Jones plays more than the wife Interview. The “Theory of Everything” star says her role is not just Mrs. Stephen Hawking.

Acting prep

Becoming Jane You actually got to speak to the person you were playing this time. Meeting Jane after reading her book gave me so much more material. I was watching her intensely. ... She has these very ladylike qualities. I worked with a movement coach to capture how that changes over 20 years. Then her voice is very high-pitched — a very finely spoken voice. ... She said I got her voice.

Felicity Jones has a habit of playing partners of powerful men — and her characters are as interesting as the men they love. In “The Invisible Woman” she was Nelly Ternan, Charles Dickens’ secret mistress. Equally formidable is Jane Hawking, the now-ex-wife of theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything.”

It’s odd that a devout Christian such as Jane got along so well with Stephen, who may be history’s most famous atheist. I was always trying to understand Jane’s ideology. Her faith has helped her. ... Jane was very much a part of Stephen’s intellectual life. ... They shared an intellectual empathy with each other. When he lost the ability to write, she would type up his theses and the early drafts of his books. You portray her as more than just “the wife of a great man.” What I liked is she’s vulnerable. She has this love, but at the same time she’s

incredibly tough. ... There’s this cool determination and survival instinct. Both she and Stephen just don’t care. They’re really rock ’n’ roll. They’re not bothered about what everyone is thinking. She suffers, but never makes a big deal of it. In my notes I was always

writing “unsentimental, unsentimental, unsentimental.” There was no selfpity. I think that’s a very English, postwar mentality. It’s that idea of you’ve got to get on with it, keep calm and carry on.

Talking Sartre with Sasha Grey Interview. The former porn star discusses “Open Windows” and why she likes depressing artists.

SASHA GREY WIREIMAGE

In “Open Windows,” former porn star Sasha Grey plays a Hollywood actress known for refusing to go nude. It’s one of many meta jokes in the thriller, which is set entirely on a computer desktop. When Grey’s character is blackmailed and kidnapped by a hacker, her only hope is a

relatively harmless fanboy played by Elijah Wood. The film plays out over computer windows, so how much did you actually see Elijah Wood? In the film, we had only one scene together. But after shooting we had a lot of fun dinners and parties together. One night, we went to a club with good music; it was very cool. Tell us about the topless scene. It was a very important part of the film, actually. Because it is the first time Jill realizes that she’s free and independent and actually takes control of her life as a young woman. In this movie it’s a turning point, and I don’t think that it’s vulgar. It’s important and for me, it’s not a problem to disrobe.

The cabin plays Take a closer look at this season’s shows with wood paneling.

HAWKES JOAN MARCUS

After seeing “Lost Lake” this past weekend at Manhattan Theatre Club, we realized it was the third play that took place in a remote cabin in very recent memory (and the second from MTC). Cabins make sense for a theatrical setting, because the space itself — which is immediately identifiable, and intimate in its familiarity — takes characters out of their everyday situations and throws them somewhere together that’s fairly isolated. In some way or another, of course, they end up confronting the things they most hoped to escape. (In a way, these plays make it seem like running off to a cabin would be cheaper than therapy. Anyone renting?) Because “The Lost Lake” officially opened last night, we thought we’d rank it against the other two of what we’re calling “cabin plays” that are concurrently running in NYC. T. A quiet date night is not impossible in NYC In a city so large and bursting with people and activities, it’s nice to take some time away and plan a date night. Yes, it’s possible to find a spot for a quiet meal in New York City. Leave your phones at home and actually spend the evening talking, not texting.

Emporio 231 Mott St. This small Italian wine bar and restaurant specializes in shared plates and homemade pastas. From 5-6:30 p.m. daily, take advantage of $4.50 drafts and wine and free appetizers at the bar; I love their Aperol Spritz. The cavatelli and veal meatballs are excellent. Even sitting at the bar is an intimate, relaxing experience: Think rustic farmhouse with urban accents.

Sushi Damo Columbus Circle & 58th Street If you’re looking for high-end

sushi to impress your date, look no further — the fish here is consistently delicious and fresh. Start with the avocado salad or the yellowtail ceviche, then order the heart-shaped Passion Roll and share the love. Specialty rolls are north of $20 but are well worth it. From 5-7 p.m. at the bar, you’ll find $6 cocktails — go for the lychee martini.

Agozar 321 Bowery If you want a place with a more lively atmosphere, try Agozar’s intimate setting with a slight party vibe. Daily from 5-8 p.m. cocktails and appetizers are half-price. It’s all about tapas and sharing here, which is a great way to see if your date can compromise. Try the mahi-mahi and the sweet-and-spicy shrimp and sausage.

Stubborn fat has met its match.

Go for the gold Design. The glam metal is having a major moment in home decor. Scroll through your favorite design blogs, Pinterest boards or home catalogs and it’ll be hard to ignore the vast amount of fancy

gold objects staring back at you. But when did our current obsession with the metal start? “I think everything starts with fashion and then trickles down,” says Christiane Lemieux, founder of DwellStudio and executive creative director of Wayfair, about the decor trend. “A few seasons ago, designers like Etro were showing

neo-1920s deco-inspired fashion. The deco period was the height of black and brass. This was followed by the revival of ‘The Great Gatsby,’ and all things deco just escalated.” Nowadays, you can find just about any product from a stapler to pendant lamp to dish rack and even crib in sparkly gold or matte brass. And no matter

which finish you prefer, these objects add a bit of glamour and warmth to your everyday. But enjoy the trend now, says Lemieux, because soon it’ll be all about copper. “It’s the next ‘it’ metal!” she says.

News about billionaires from Russia, China, Brazil and other lands dropping tens of millions on Midtown trophy homes may generate yawns these days. But the industry is waking up to the massive sums from overseas pouring into NYC on the building and portfolio level. Much of that money is finding a home in what just a few years ago was considered the far reaches of the city: Brooklyn and Queens. Foreigners invested more than $600 million in outer-borough real estate through the first half of the year — the most ever — according to data from Real Capital Analytics. Brooklyn received the vast majority of that speculation.

Appeal grows in Brooklyn The world’s hipsters wear Nets T-shirts and dine at Williamsburg-themed restaurants — at least in Western Europe. No question, Brooklyn is an international brand with clout, and some foreign investors have taken notice. Most notably, the Shanghai-based, government-backed Greenland Group bought a 70 percent stake in the residential

portion of Forest City Ratner’s Atlantic Yards project — now rebranded Pacific Park Brooklyn — for $200 million in December. “These days, I don’t have a problem attracting foreign investors,” said Adam Hess, a partner in charge of TerraCRG’s Multifamily Investment Sales Division. He recently sold a six-unit building at 401 12th St. in Park Slope to a private Japanese investor for $4 million. To the north, the formerly bohemian enclave of Williamsburg has gone the way of Paris’ Sixth Arrondissement, becoming the epicenter of outer-borough investment for foreign interests. Warner Lewis, a Halstead broker, said that just a few years ago, it was significantly harder to attract foreigners to Brooklyn. “I moved to the Edge [a waterfront condo in Williamsburg] in 2011,” Lewis said. “About six months later, an Italian investor came over with his broker and said, ‘I looked up Williamsburg. It’s in Virginia. What am I doing here?’” But, Lewis continued, “Just 12 months later, I never heard anyone question what Williamsburg was again.” Still, to some outsiders, the pitch to invest outside Manhattan is a hard sell. “A lot of the deals that we have seen in Brooklyn from foreign investors are from those who already have a cousin, friend, son or daughter living there,” Lewis said. “They tell their families how great it is, and that becomes their entree into the market.”

Next up

Queens: The new Brooklyn Even more so than in Brooklyn, Queens, with its vast immigrant communities, attracts foreign investors through overseas networks of family and friends, often crowdfunding their buys. “It’s very likely that the vast majority of foreign buyers who are coming to Queens already have family there,” said Stephen Kliegerman, president of Halstead Property Development Marketing. He added, “Queens has a different international buyer than Brooklyn.” Still, the recent explosion of development in Long Island City — some 500 condo units and 10,000 rental units are in the pipeline — promises to place the borough more prominently on the world map. Holding them back A disadvantage the borough faces is its housing stock, which largely consists of single-family rowhouses and rentals. In

general, investors prefer to live in condo buildings, because of the luxury amenities and the ease with which they can be rented out or resold, brokers said. But that is a problem that developers, including

sophisticated international ďŹ rms, are tackling. Among the spate of condo projects underway, the Oosten, for example, a Chinese-backed 216-unit residential development at 429 Kent Ave., is sched-

The perfect fit Fashion. Catherine Ryu of Citizens of Humanity spills her denim styling tips.

up to ankle-length, so that a little skin shows.

Beyond skinnies Switch up your jean game with ’70s flares — which are making a huge comeback, says Ryu. “Pair them with a scoop-neck top or a fitted button down, tucked in, for effortless style,” she adds. The new pair she’s loving: The Fleetwood, a high-rise flare. “High-rise flares give you the illusion of mile-long legs.”

Denim is practically our second skin. So it’s crucial we feel — and look — amazing in our trusty daily uniform. When we met Citizens of Humanity Creative Director Catherine Ryu recently, the petite designer looked so graceful in her slouchy, boyish jeans that we had to get her tips on buying and rocking our next pair.

“If you’re on the petite side and you’re wearing boyfriend jeans or something looser, roll them up,” says Ryu. It’s the 5-foot-2 designer’s go-to styling trick. “When jeans are shorter, they just make you look taller,” she says. Ryu suggests rolling pants

Dressing up

Denim evening wear Long gone are the days where you’re considered underdressed for showing up to a party in jeans. “Dark washes especially make a great alternative evening look,” says Ryu. She loves the brand’s Rocket fit in Axel, which is a high-rise skinny in super-stretch black fabric. “The Rocket is like a girdle — slimming and flattering for most body types,” she says. And if you want to be a real scene-stealer, Ryu says to throw on some heels with overalls — in which case, we’ll see you by the hor d’oeuvres.

You know those slightly baggier jeans you save for lazy Sundays? Add them to your daily rotation. “Slimmer boyfriend fits have been on trend the past few seasons,” says Ryu. “We’re seeing the silhouette moving away from the body toward a slightly looser fit.” The designer loves wearing hers with a T-shirt and an army jacket. But she says: “Add a pair of heels to offset the tomboy vibes.”

Play with size “If the fit is good and there is stretch in the fabric, you can go up or down two sizes,” says Ryu. This rule especially applies to boyfriend fits. “They often run on the bigger side, so size down for a trimmer look.”

TINTYPE IS YET ANOTHER PHOTO FILTER APP, BUT THIS TIME FOR THE SUPER-RETRO

Gadgets. Clumsy night trips to the bathroom? There’s an IllumiBowl for that Going to the bathroom in the middle of the night just got a whole lot flashier. IllumiBowl, designed by Utah native Matt Alexander, is a motion-activated LED that casts a beam of colored disco lights into the commode, handily helping you find your way to your throne through sleepy eyes. We spoke with Alexander about his invention. What inspired you to create the IllumiBowl? Simply this: I was tired of being woken up after having to turn on the lights every time I went to the bathroom at night. Are you trying to turn toilet time into a thrill? It’s meant to make nighttime bathroom trips convenient, and it just looks

TinType turns your photos — including ones of Herbie Hancock, above — into ones that look 150 years old.

TinType Platform(s): iOS, Android Price: 99 cents

How many photo filter apps do you need? Your phone likely comes with an OK one built in; “Instagram” offers its own wide spectrum. If you’re looking for something more retro — ones that try really hard to look like they were snapped in the 1970s and allowed to fade and turn distressingly orange — “Hipstamatic” has long been your friend. It was among the first and best apps to seize upon humankind’s desire to replicate the look of the old, if for no other reason than it made you feel more powerful than you really are. Now “Hipstamatic” has another round of filters — but, in a brilliant Machia-

vellian maneuver, you’ll have to pay for an entirely different app to get them. (App companies have to make money somehow!) TinType goes super old, with filters made to look like your photo was taken in the distant past, in the old “daguerreotype” way that captured haunting images of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson and the 1851 solar eclipse. You can turn your photos a dim black-and-white or tint them a sickly yellow. But it will take more than a filter to really capture the look of photos taken 150 years ago, when people rocked stiff poses and never, ever smiled or looked happy. But if you’re someone who gets easily bored with the photo filters you’ve already burned through, here’s another one to occupy your time.

cool to have a glowing toilet, too! Did you used to have serious difficulty using the toilet at night? I didn’t have a lot of trouble. It’s just I had two choices: Turn on the light and get blinded and woken up, or pee in the dark and risk missing the toilet and having an angry wife! What reaction do you expect from consumers? We have had an incredible reaction so far. It appeals to older customers because it is convenient, younger customers because it is cool and unheard of and mothers because they can use it to potty-train their young children who are too short to reach the lights at night. Oldies but goodies

Best of the rest Along with Hipstamatic, we’ve long had a crush on Old Camera, which deals exclusively in turning your photos an austere black-andwhite. Mextures simply allows you to mix and match filters until you have something that looks not retro but simply retina-searing. If you’re into pure abstraction, PixelWakker turns your photos into pointillist pixels, making all of us today’s own Georges Seurat.

Andrew Solomon on the dignity of a chosen death Assisted suicide. The psychologist argues for the right to die.

Debate

Legalize Assisted Suicide

The end of a life is inevitably tragic — but what if an even bigger tragedy could be avoided by hastening it? That was the eventuality that 29-year-old Brittany Maynard avoided. On Nov. 1, supported by her family and the millions around the world who learned about her choice to end her life before an aggressive brain tumor could leech it from her slowly and painfully, Maynard took a prescribed dose of lethal medication. To get that prescrip-

tion, Maynard moved with her family to Oregon, one of only five states with a “Death with Dignity law that allows for assisted suicide, in which a doctor can provide medication to end the life of a dying patient who’s deemed mentally competent. Whether the option should be available nationwide or banned entirely will be the subject

of an Intelligence Squared U.S. debate taking place Thursday, with passionate advocates on both sides. One of the issue’s supporters, distinguished author and Columbia University professor of clinical psychology Andrew Solomon, has written about his mother’s assisted suicide in 1991 after a years-long battle with ovarian cancer. He calls Maynard “little short of heroic for devoting the final months of her life to speaking about the issue — and giving it a new face. “People tend to distance themselves from the very old and sick until they themselves are very old and sick, Solomon tells Metro. “I think having someone who is young and beautiful and articu-

best friends die of cancer “in pain that was not wellcontrolled and in a state of relative incoherence. My mother just said, ‘The person I saw in that hospital bed was not Sandy. She was not the Sandy I had known and loved for many years, and I don’t want you to remember me like that and I don’t want to go through that experience.’ Currently, the law requires that a patient be diagnosed with a terminal illness to have the option of assisted suicide. Though Solomon supports strict guidelines on who that choice is made available

to, that standard doesn’t include everyone whose quality of life no longer satisfies them. “I’ve seen people who have ALS or even people who have Alzheimer’s who are at a point at which they no longer wish to go on, and the question of whether ... those people should have access to the right to die is complicated and nuanced simply because it’s more open to reinterpretation and misuse, Solomon said. Spice up your health Herbals. More people recognize the therapeutic power of plants.

Consumers and even mainstream doctors are starting to view herbal remedies more seriously. This attitude shift is partly due to increasing recognition of the benefits of a more healthful diet and herbs and spices, which paved the way for their more exotic cousins, the medicinals. But perhaps the biggest reason more people are turning to nature’s medicine chest is worries about pharmaceutical recalls and the lengthy list of potential side effects of many modern drugs. “Often, people need a second prescription to deal with the side effects of the original drug they’re given,” says Cheryl Myers, an integrative health nurse who sits on the editorial board of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians’ Natural Medicine Journal. Myers may lean toward natural cures, but her approach to healthy living combines herbals and conventional medicine. “I keep a foot in both worlds. If I get run over by a pickup truck, don’t take me to an aromatherapist; take me to the best trauma center there is,” she says.

undergo the FDA approval process can pose risks, citing the 2 0 1 2 o u t break of fungal meningitis from contaminated steroids made in a Massachusetts lab that sickened more than 200 people and killed 64. There are unscrupulous manufacturers in the natural supplements market, too. “Curcumin is so hot right now, everyone is jumping on the bandwagon, and fakes are coming onto the market. There’s a Chinese synthetic curcumin derived from petrochemicals,” she says.

natural remedies, which don’t need the same approval as drugs. But facilities are inspected to make sure there’s a good manufacturing process — it’s regulated like food production and even a bit more intensively,” Myers says. She notes that even conventional drugs that

Safety concerns

Myers recommends checking labels and only buying reputable brands. “Also, build a relationship with a nutritionist or a health food store you trust. They often know the latest developments before the public does,” she says. Also, as with conventional drugs, follow the dosage; just because it’s natural, more isn’t necessarily better and could be dangerous. “If the dosage is four pills a day and it’s not working for you, then it’s not the right remedy,” Myers says, “or the formulation is inferior and it’s not being absorbed. Don’t take more pills; change the product. The most expensive product is one that does nothing for you.” Myers is confident herbals will become an accepted part of modern medicine: “[Ibuprofen] doubles the risk of stroke and heart attack; it causes gastric bleeding. Nothing is risk-free, but taken as prescribed, the benefits of many herb cures is good health.” LINDA CLARKE @metronewyork letters@metro.us

Herbs and spices can work well as natural painkillers, says Myers. Here are some of her recommendations. •

Curcumin (found in turmeric): “For general pain, curcumin is the go-to for best all-round anti-inflammatory. It’s been clinically proven to be effective for all types of pain but it has to be at an absorbable dose.”

Boswellia serrata (a relative of frankincense): “For asthma, COPD and other inflammatory lung diseases, and also gut conditions like IBS and Crohn’s disease, boswellia really settles the inflammation down.”

Comfrey (a relative of borage): “This is the trauma plant, used for things like sprained ankles or chronic back pain. There are 14 published studies of its topical use for adults and children. ... It’s a great one to have to hand.”

There’s a lot of misinfor-

How has the diagnosis changed your routine? “There are a few positive things that came out of my diagnosis. I pay a lot more attention to what I put in my body. I take it so much more seriously.

It’s part of my everyday life, when I used to not care so much about what I ate. I know how fortunate I was to get in a race car, and how quickly it could be taken away.

adapt my life, but not to race would be really hard to accept. So he didn’t. Reed began to fit managing the disease into his life, instead of letting it set the boundaries. His Roush Fenway Racing stock car is outfitted with a rig that allows him to drink while racing, his dashboard includes a blood glucose monitor, and he receives insulin injections during pit stops. But, as with racing, managing his condition is about preparation: a healthy diet and exercise. He works with a nutritionist and does strength and endurance training at the gym. And besides his car, there’s another machine that travels with him: a road bike. “The tracks tend to be in really beautiful areas, so I’ll get on my bike and check it out. Through Drive to Stop Diabetes, Reed works with children’s organizations to spread awareness about diabetes. And though he’s usually asked about what brand of insulin pump he uses and how often he checks his blood sugar, it’s hearing about what’s still possible with diabetes that gets kids excited. “I have type 1 diabetes, and I’m still driving a race car. It doesn’t make [diabetes] cool, but it makes it a little less scary. EVA KIS @thisiskis

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

Net neutrality benefits the average citizen and President Obama is right to support it Internet carriers want to make more money from regular citizens by bamboozling us into giving up Net neutrality — giving up our right to transmit data on the Internet without paying more for faster speeds. Currently, we get fast speeds for everything, but Internet companies want us to pay for what we are now getting for free.

It’s a straight-up bad deal for regular citizens, which is why we flooded the FCC with comments against any change. But it’s as good as found money for Internet carriers, which is why they are paid to get the FCC commissioners in their pocket. Now President Obama has come out on regular citizens’ side and is advocating for Net neutrality. If we don’t like the rich getting richer by picking our pockets, it’s a no-brainer. We should support Net neutrality. KEN GREIFF, VIA EMAIL

Willis out for the season Pro Bowlers are dropping like flies in the NFC West. One day after Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer was ruled out for the season, 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis was also. Willis, who missed the last three games with an injury to his left big toe, will now need season-ending surgery. Rookie Chris Borland has excelled in replacing Willis. In other NFC West injury news, the Seahawks have lost veteran defensive tackle Brandon Mebane for the season.

Yormark balances old, new with Isles’ move NHL. Metro spoke to Barclays and Nets CEO Brett Yormark one year out from the NHL coming to Brooklyn. The Islanders are moving west, but they have no plan to discard the past when they settle into the Barclays Center. Rather, they will honor what was authored on Long Island while laying the groundwork for history to be made. “It’s the balance of this contemporary new approach to sports in Brooklyn, and how that marries to the tradition of the Islanders,” Brooklyn Nets and Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark told Metro New York in a wideranging phone interview. “And I think my team and I have been very sensitive to the fact that they have to mesh.” The Islanders will call the state-of-the-art arena on the corner of Atlantic and Flatbush Avenue home beginning in 2015-16. The move will be the final act in a saga that has raged for nearly two decades before the team announced in an Oct. 24, 2012, press conference it had come to a 25-year agreement to play home games at the Barclays Center.

The Islanders have already played preseason games at the Barclays Center before this season and before last season ahead of the team’s permanent move in 2015. / GETTY IMAGES Quoted

“They’re not thrilled that the team is moving, OK? But they rather [the team] move to Brooklyn than somewhere else in the country where they can’t frequent.” Brett Yormark, Barclays Center CEO, on the Islanders fans from Nassau County and them losing their local team

The Islanders have played every home game in the franchise’s 43-year history at the Nassau Coliseum on Hempstead Turnpike, so the relocation to Barclays will be a transitional process with the building unlike any in the NHL. Due to its configuration, Barclays will possess peculiarities when compared to other NHL rinks with the primary example being the main scoreboard hanging over one of the

blue lines. Another issue is seating capacity, as Barclays projects to be the second-smallest arena in the NHL — with under 16,000 seats. Yormark explained Barclays is adding 120 to 150 West End Club seats, which he believes will provide fans with a hockey-viewing experience unlike any in the league. The task for Barclays becomes conserving and cultivating fans. Yormark and his staff have built campaigns centered around the slogans “Tradition Has a New Home” and “Brooklyn Scores.” The thought process behind the approach is to attract the current fanbase on Long Island to experience Brooklyn while creating interest for the team in their new home borough. “We have a neat marketing situation that’s going on,” Yormark said. “You have to be true to the hardcore fan, the one that’s been there since Day 1, if you will, on Long Island. But at the same time you have to balance that with the fact we have to create a whole new fanbase here in Brooklyn. How we communicate to those fanbases certainly will define our success.” DENIS GORMAN @DenisGorman

Islanders may use third alternate in Nets’ black, white style To attract the Long Island fanbase, the Barclays Center will have an organ and banners to commemorate the franchise’s history, according to Yormark, who reiterated that the team will retain its traditional blue, orange and white colors for the home and road jerseys, while creating a third sweater that is

Brooklyn-centric. “Very well could be,” Yormark said, when asked directly if the color scheme and logo for the third jersey could replicate that of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets. “The two brands and the two teams can certainly complement each other.” To that end, the teams will participate in “a jersey exchange,” Yormark said. The idea has a twopronged strategy with the first being a way to create a “synergy” between the respective fanbases. The second is “in some respects, a ceremony which

passes the torch” from the Nets to the Islanders, Yormark said. “You’ll see the same blueprint from the Islanders,” Yormark said. “One thing about the Islanders, they’ve always been a community-minded team, one that certainly has been active. We anticipate the same thing here in Brooklyn. We are going to define that community platform very clearly. You will see players very much engaged in this borough, no different than what you see with the Nets.” DENIS GORMAN

NFL power rankings | by Matt Burke No. 1

No. 11

Cardinals (8-1)

Colts (6-3)

Ravens (6-3)

Dolphins (5-4)

Vikings (4-5)

The Cardinals still have fantastic skill position players. Larry Fitzgerald is going strong.

It’s possible the Colts will be exposed by the Pats on Sunday. New England and Indy are coming o a bye.

Depending on the week, the AFC North looks like the best division in football or the worst.

The Bills beat the Dolphins in Week 2. It’s the reason why we gave Buffalo the slight edge here.

We bet Roger Goodell’s cousin’s mailman dies so he can delay Monday’s Adrian Peterson hearing.

No. 4

Patriots (7-2) This is the ďŹ rst November in years our preseason Super Bowl picks are still poised to make the big game, so we’ll use this space to gloat: Patriots vs. Eagles in the big game. You heard it here in August. The East Coast rematch, exactly 10 years after Donovan McNabb threw up on his cleats in Jacksonville.

We fully expected the Broncos to put an all-time beatdown on the Raiders, fresh o getting blown out by the Pats.

Either you say they haven’t beat anyone of note, or there’s no shame in losing at Seattle, at Detroit and at New Orleans.

Ben Tate told ESPN this week his diminished role in Cleveland is far from satisfying. Incentive for this week versus Houston.

Few teams in league history have needed a bye more than the 2014 Chargers this past month. The lowly Raiders are next.

New Orleans will plow through the AFC North trifecta of Cincy, Baltimore and Pittsburgh over the next three weeks.

49ers (5-4)

Texans (4-5)

It’s amazing what victories can do. The Seahawks have won three in a row, and no one cares about the locker room drama.

Kansas City is red hot, having won four straight. Their win at Bualo this Sunday may have been the most impressive.

The Niners’ schedule softens a bit in the next couple of weeks as they play at the Giants and host the Redskins.

The fact that the Bengals got ďŹ ve wins out of Andy Dalton this season is a minor miracle given what we now know.

“Mallett for Fitzpatrick isn’t exactly “Young for Montana in terms of QB controversies, but we’re interested in the results. No. 22

Eagles (7-2)

Lions (7-2)

Cowboys (7-3)

Bills (5-4)

Steelers (6-4)

Rams (3-6)

Who’d guess Tom Brady, Mark Sanchez and Drew Stanton would be QBs of the three best teams?

If you like football, go ahead and tell your family now. You won’t be talking to them on Thanksgiving.

Tony Romo’s 138.8 QB rating with two broken bones in his back against the Jags was impressive.

Most people are down on the Bills this week, but they’re still better than half the teams in the NFL.

No one will be surprised by anything that happens at Tennessee Monday after this confusing season.

This is the ďŹ rst team we’ve covered in these rankings that has no shot at making the postseason.
