Yes, the guy who shot bin Laden is a Sox fan Boston. We spoke with Robert O’Neill about baseball, terrorism and his riveting career as a Navy SEAL. It was fall in 2004, and the man who would years later become known as the guy who shot Osama bin Laden was going through the rigorous selection process for Navy SEAL Team Six near Washington, D.C. Team Six is considered to be an elite, top-tier counterterrorism unit, and the selection process weeds out many SEALs. So Robert O’Neill’s days were consumed with challenges both mentally and physically draining. And his nights? They were filled with Red Sox baseball. “The training was so hard, and the only thing I looked forward to was getting through the day so I could watch the Red Sox play,” said O’Neill, who is now retired from the SEALs. “That’s really how I was introduced to baseball, because I wasn’t a big baseball fan growing up.” O’Neill, a Montana native, would make it onto Team Six, and the Sox would win their first World Series in 86 years, coming back from a 0-3 hole against the nemesis New York Yankees to win the American League pennant before sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals. “I remember the way that Big Papi stepped up and he was just the guy,” said O’Neill. “Obviously that’s what he does for a living — he’s the guy. I remember being really impressed with him and how he could perform night after night.” O’Neill, who recently publicized his role in the killing of bin Laden, saying he shot the extremist during a raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan, acknowledged his fandom “is going to sound like some bandwagon jumping.” Call him a “pink hat” at your own risk, though. In the years since that fateful autumn, he would sign the Green Monster, get to know Fenway’s groundskeeper, David Mellor, on a first name basis — “He turns that grass into a work of art” — and acquire a jar of dirt from the historic ballpark.

There, he described how bin Laden died. “[With] the tears in the room and the raw emotion, I realized if I can positively affect these great Americans who have had their lives, almost destroyed … it would be irresponsible of me not to try tell everybody that was affected by 9/11,” he said. “It was a risk, but it was so much bigger than me. I accept the risk. I’ve accepted risk before. It’s bigger than me, it’s about the entire country. Everyone was affected.” Yes, he is concerned for his safety and the safety of his friends and family. “I’ve taken the steps in the past few months to have things

prepared,” he said. “I don’t get into the details of how I’m doing that. I don’t want to give that away.” Some in the military have criticized his decision to go public regarding his role in the operation, saying publishing such deeds goes against the teamwork ethos of the SEALs and the American military in

general. O’Neill said he respects such opinions and that he made sure to not divulge any classified information about tactics. He batted away suggestions that he went public to cash in. “If I was going to go public to start paying the bills, I would have probably done it in August 2012,” he said. Going into the nighttime raid that would kill bin Laden in May 2011, O’Neill said he had accepted that “the chances of us dying were good.” There was the possibility of getting shot down. Or someone in the compound might have blown themselves up. “It would be better for him to martyr himself,” he said. That’s to say nothing of what could have happened if they encountered resistance from Pakistani forces. He said a confluence of factors led him to leave the Navy. He had just completed what he considered to be “the most important mission of our time.” He felt he had accomplished a lot during his years with the SEALs. There was the helicopter crash in August 2011, which killed 17 members of Team Six, all of whom he knew. Gun battles no longer provided him with an adrenaline rush, and he was afraid that fact would lead to him becoming complacent and lazy — things that could get him killed on the battlefield. On his last deployment to Afghanistan, in 2012, he would don a Red Sox beanie to stave off the subzero temperatures. The beanie, he said, was given to him by a friend who is a Massachusetts cop living in Lowell. “It was 22 [degrees] below zero when we started the mission. I opened the care package, and there was a Red Sox beanie. And I’m like ‘It’s cold outside, I’m wearing that thing,’” said O’Neill. “There was a group of five suicide bombers in a car, conducting a suicide mission. And we found out about it. We ended up eliminating all five of the threats. And I had my Boston Red Sox hat on. I thought that was pretty cool.” DANNY MCDONALD @DMacCash

BMW in front of fire hydrant sparks outrage South End. Fire officials were scrutinized yesterday for not smashing up a BMW that was parked in front of a hydrant.

New England Eye Center, affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine, is offering patients advanced treatments for all aspects of vision care through 8 convenient locations in the Greater Boston area.

The Boston Fire Department defended itself on Twitter yesterday after taking heat for not busting out the windows of a BMW that was parked in front of a South End fire hydrant as flames tore through a nearby apartment building. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and eight residents were displaced after a 3-alarm fire broke out at 64 Rutland St. early Sunday morning. The blaze was knocked out around 8 a.m. — but while chronicling their emergency response on Twitter, @BostonFire tweeted a photograph that showed a firefighter attempting to connect a fire hose to

the hydrant, with the black BMW sedan parked snuggly against the curb. The caption read, “This never helps.” Twitter users were quick to weigh in. User @bar1203 tweeted that the department “should have busted the window out [and] ran the hose through the car,” while user @dee_scace tweeted, “Of course it’s a beamer. #rulesdontapplytome.” Hours later, the department said they received many comments asking why responders did not smash the swanky car’s window. “We don’t intentionally damage things,” @BostonFire tweeted. “In this case. Nothing was to be gained from going through car. The only goal is to get water as quickly as possible... [The] purpose of posting the photo is to remind all [that] firefighters need access to hydrants. Help us help you when there is a fire.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Allston. Dangerous street to get new bike lanes, road stripes to better safety The city will soon build long-awaited bicycle lanes on Cambridge Street in Allston, following public calls for improved safety measures for cyclists and pedestrians on the treacherous roadway. In a matter of weeks, the Boston Department of Transportation plans to add bike lanes near the Cambridge Street overpass and re-stripe the street on both sides, according to a recent report by The Boston Globe. Allston resident Harry Mattison, 41, says he regularly jogs and cycles on the notoriously busy street, which he believes to be one of the most dangerous roadways in the city. “Where the Mass Pike on-and-off ramps merge into the street are incredibly dangerous sections, so this has been something that residents have wanted for years,” said Mattison. “Cambridge Street is such a crucial link, but it’s also terrifying, so to have safer crossings will be

US military already advising Iraqis American forces have begun advising Iraqi troops in western Anbar province, the top U.S. general told Reuters, in a faster-than-expected expansion of an operation that is central to its campaign against Islamic State. “We have a train, advise and assist team in al-Asad air base,â€? General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Sta, said in an interview. “There’s enough there that are already working with the seventh division to help them plan and help them understand the threat, to advise them on how to consolidate their forces.â€? GOP mulls shutdown to block Obama on immigration decrees Discord. Obama expected to announce executive actions on immigration by the year’s end. Republican Sen. John Thune on Sunday held open the possibility that his party could move to shut down the government in an attempt to stop President Barack Obama from taking executive action on immigration policy. A vocal group of conservatives in the House of Representatives is pressing to use government funding as leverage to prevent any White House moves that would allow millions of undocumented immigrants to stay and work in the United States.

Several Republicans, including some in leadership, have said they were trying to find alternatives that would stop short of directly threatening a government shutdown, and Republican lawmakers on Sunday talk shows acknowledged that the shutdown threat was

not an ideal approach. “It doesn’t solve the problem. But look, we’re having those discussions. ... We’re going to continue to meet about this. I know the House leaders are talking about [it], the Senate leaders are talking about it, said South Dakota’s Thune, who chairs the Senate Republican Conference, on “Fox News Sunday. “Republicans are looking at different options about how best to respond to the president’s unilateral action, which many people believe is unconstitutional, unlawful action on this particular issue, Thune said. Thune and Republican Rep. Tom Cole said Obama’s expected use of executive power on the issue was what fueled partisanship and lack of cooperation.

Taylor Swift contemplates a real cold play

CULTURE

THE WORD Ned Ehrbar takes on the world of gossip.

All of the year’s gossip stories appear to be converging — and just in time for the holidays! Think of it as the Celebrity Singularity. The latest evidence? This Star magazine story that Taylor Swift — despite recent protestations that she’s so over the concept of dating for now — has set her sights on Coldplay frontman and Gwyneth Paltrow

ex, Chris Martin, despite his on-again, off-again relationship with Jennifer Lawrence. Deep breaths, everybody. “Taylor would love to make Chris her new boyfriend, a source tells the magazine. Wow, that sounds like some conscious coupling there, eh? “She’s taking advantage of how Jen’s and Chris’ busy schedules are keeping them apart. She can sense that their relationship is on shaky ground, so she’s moving in — fast. All we need is a tag-team response from Blake Lively and Martha Stewart, and we’re set. In all seriousness, though, can someone explain to me why Chris Martin is suddenly the hottest thing in Hollywood since sliced Clooney? I’m mystified.

They thought they were out, but someone brought them back in: Jim Carrey and Je Daniels spent two decades away from their “Dumb and Dumberâ€? doofuses. But fate — or the promise of lots of money — meant it was time for a long-awaited sequel. They’re not alone. Here’s a look at some of the most interesting callbacks that Hollywood has ever attempted, with varying results. MATT PRIGGE 30 years

Lemmon and Matthau weren’t the only Felix and Oscar. The Broadway hitturned-movie became a hit on TV, with Tony Randall and Jack Klugman. After Lemmon and Matthau scored with “Grumpy Old Men,â€? they dusted o their old roles.

Classics don’t often get sequels, yet Newman’s pool shark returned, under the direction of Scorsese, and teamed with an immediately post-“Top Gun Tom Cruise. Newman won an Oscar for it.

After the semi-surprise success of “Rocky Balboa (done a “mere 16 years after “Rocky V), Sly dusted off John Rambo, too. Here, he’s the mumbly savior of Burmese peasants, killing villains in ways more grisly than before.

Q&A DAMON WAYANS JR. JUST WANTS TO DRAW The “Big Hero 6” vocal star talks about playing a neurotic superhero, the heart of “New Girl” and, of course, gynecologists. On the brilliant-but-canceled “Happy Endings,” Damon Wayans Jr. proved he’s a master of the high-pitched squeal. So it shouldn’t have come as a surprise to him that for “Big Hero 6,” Disney wanted his character, Wasabi, to sound not all that manly. We caught up with Wayans to talk about the animated film, plus his current work on “New Girl” — and how if everyone followed their childhood dreams, we’d have a world full of ninjas, superheroes and disappointed gynecologists. Did you feel at all slighted when you realized the voice they wanted from you was not exactly a big tough guy? The first time I saw Wasabi’s character, I saw him in his su-

perhero mode, with his green visor and his plasma blades poking out, so I was just like, “Oh, this guy is badass.” And they were like, “Yeah, we want him to be … a little neurotic, more of a worrywart.” And I was like, “Is that how you see me?” [Laughs] No, I didn’t really feel slighted. It was one of those things where it’s like, “Whatever you want.” Because growing up, I wanted to be an animator and an illustrator, so I always looked up to Disney. What stopped you from pursuing illustration? I don’t know. I mean, I still draw constantly. I’m actually developing a graphic novel right now. But I don’t know. Nobody’s ever their first dream — I mean, rarely.

There would be so many ninjas and superheroes now if everybody was their first dream. I remember growing up, being at sixth grade graduation and like half my class wanted to be gynecologists. I was like, “Why do you guys want to look at sick vaginas, dude?” They probably thought in their head it was so noble. No, it’s a hard job. Or they had just learned what a gynecologist was. Yeah, they were like, “You get to look at vaginas?” No, dude. You get to look at vaginas at their worst. [Laughs] You’d just wind up saying, “Oh, this isn’t right.” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

How has joining “New Girl” been going? They give you a lot of freedom. They don’t necessarily use all of [the ad libs], but you definitely are allowed to express yourself and be funny. It’s always fun to make the crew laugh as well, or to make one of the characters break within the scene, I love that. I just love destroying a take. How does the “New Girl” experience compare to “Happy Endings”? I feel like “Happy Endings,” we never had the luxury of comfort. We never felt like we were just going to be here for years, so we were always eager to give our best. When you’re on “New Girl” and you know it’s going to be here for a couple more years, you’re a little more relaxed. I also

feel like the one thing that “New Girl” has that “Happy Endings” didn’t — which I feel like they needed more of — is heart. I feel like “New Girl,” no matter how crazy they get, they’ll have at least one or two scenes where they just ground the hell out of it and it’s like, this is why the show stays on the air, because people need to make that connection. I feel like “Happy Endings” was more of a coastal show, appeal-wise.

WELLBEING

The butt is no joke #breaktheinternet. How the booty got “phat, and the skinny from Kim Kardashian’s trainer.

617-523-2929

not lie — Sir Mix-A-Lot just said what people everywhere have been thinking for centuries with “Baby Got Back, the ’90s anthem that ushered in the era of booty worship in popular culture. Shaking it — whether like a Polaroid picture or twerking — reached another level when Beyonce rightly questioned whether we were “ready for this jelly in her song “Bootylicious. More recently, Jennifer Lopez, famed for her curves, is paying homage to the heinie in her latest song, “Booty, with a video featuring over four minutes of shameless booty-shaking and butt-bouncing with rapper Iggy Azalea. Nicki Minaj also recently made waves with her sexually explicit track and video “Anaconda, which includes the lyrics “Oh my gosh, look at her butt, showing a squatting Minaj in just a bustier and thong. Curvaceous icons date back centuries, but booties didn’t get much attention in the West until the Renaissance, when artists like Rubens and Rembrandt typified the Grand Baroque style with paintings of voluptuous women. “The interest in curvaceous derrieres corresponds to the morphological type that emerged thanks to the cultural mix brought by mass emigration to occidental countries in the 20th century, says Bernard Andrieu, cultural historian of the body at the University of Rouen, France. But the current idolized posterior is significantly different. “Today’s figure is far removed from any sign of saggy plumpness — it’s a very new standard whose roots can be found in pornographic productions. The body is highlighted under this new reference of modern culture, says Andrieu. But while the audience sits back and enjoys all that hypnotic butt-shaking, performers know that working that booty is hard work. Big butts are pert — and Kardashian is fielding her share of theories from plastic surgeons that she had the help of a Brazilian butt lift to get it so prominent. But one thing is for sure: They can’t be achieved by eating dessert. “You might be able to work on it, but mostly it comes from a genetic background, bringing new standards for the rest of womanhood, says Andrieu.

How to sculpt your booty

While there’s no way of feeding the junk in your trunk, you can put your “back into some of the moves that make for a

1

cover-worthy booty. We got the basics of Kardashian’s routine from Joel Bouraima, her personal coach at L’Usine in Paris.

Get on your side, using your elbow for balance. Raise and lower your leg in a scissor movement. Remember: Keep your foot turned toward the ground. Depending on the position of your leg, you work on the back of the bum (raised leg pushed a bit backward), the side (leg in line with the body) and the top of the thigh (leg pushed a bit forward).

2

Get on all fours. Extend one leg toward the ceiling, keeping your back straight. Hold for 30 seconds. As it gets easier, try to hold it for a minute on each leg. For better results, use an exercise rubber band or ankle weights. If you just push the leg without extending it, you will work on the back of your thighs, which helps create the curve between the leg and the butt.

3

The squat is a classic exercise, easy to do anywhere and works wonders. Make sure you’re not bending forward; always keep your back straight as you go up and down. Your butt goes backward and your knees should always be on the same vertical line as your feet. Repeat for 30 seconds, then try 1 minute. To really accentuate the eect and develop the posterior, use a workout bar and add some weight, but keep it under 15 squats.

By making your waist skinnier, you can give the impression that your butt is bigger — which Kardashian used to great eect on the Paper cover. To make your waist thinner, do a side plank and hold it for 30 seconds to 1 minute. You can add some weights to make it harder and more eďŹƒcient. For an even tighter sculpt, sit on one side of your bum and try to touch your feet with your hands, while pushing your legs up. Repeat until you feel the burn!

EDUCATION

A guide to spending the holidays away from home Etiquette. Learn how to be the perfect houseguest this holiday season. Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and for many college students it is simply too expensive to head home for the long weekend — which means that they will probably be spending the holiday with the family of a local friend. For students who’ve never spent Thanksgiving away from home before, it can be difficult to know exactly what’s expected of them. “I think there is an urge when you are young to think that you are just visiting your friend, rather than their family,” says etiquette blogger Victoria Pratt. Along with her colleague Jaya Saxena, Pratt is the cofounder of Uncommon Courtesy, a blog that tackles modernday etiquette problems. We talked to the duo about how to students can gracefully survive Thanksgiving. Never forget that you are a guest. “It’s just making sure you clean up after yourself,” says Saxena. “Make sure that you pitch in. Be aware that other families do things differently.” Bring a gift for your hosts.

15

Reminder. Don’t forget to say thanks to everyone

At the table

Be respectful You also may find that your hosts like say grace before the meal, while you don’t normally do so. “If you don’t feel comfortable, just bow your head down,” says Saxena. “You don’t have to say ‘amen.’”

You didn’t get through this process alone. / PURESTOCK

After all of their applications are in, there’s one more thing every senior should do before finishing the college admissions process: Say thank you to everyone who helped along the way. Here are the three notes every student should take the time to write:

1

Teachers who wrote a recommendation letter. Remember, a recommendation letter can take hours to research and write.

Remember that every family has its own traditions. / PURESTOCK

“I like to bring some sort of breakfast treat,” says Pratt. “That way they wake up and breakfast is taken care of.” Avoid controversial conversation topics. “Don’t feel super shy with somebody that’s being terrible,” says Pratt. While you cannot react the way you would if you were in your own home, you can change the subject. “You’re in school, so you can always start talking about your major,” Pratt suggests. There’s also always the option of walking away. “You can excuse yourself,” says Saxena.

Politeness

lakshmi.gandhi@metro.us

Ask how your hosts would like to be addressed “Ask your friend if their family is big on Mr. or Mrs. or if they want to be called by their first names,” advises Pratt. Don’t assume things.

“You have to balance being a guest with your commitment to social justice,” she adds.

DEVELOP YOUR HARD SKILLS Over the years, I’ve pushed all of you to become subject matter experts because that’s what companies are searching for. Hard skills, such as being able to program in certain computer languages, are measurable and in high demand. In a new study commissioned by my company, in partnership with Elance-oDesk. com, we found that HR professionals focus more on hard skills when hiring than soft skills (like attitude or personality). Fifty-five percent said they focused more on hard skills while 21 percent focused on soft skills. Here are some tips for developing your hard skills so you can compete:

jobs you’re applying to, you should come up with a list of skills that are required. Look at the job descriptions for the ones you want to apply to and see what skills they all require and have in common. For example, if you’re interested in being a financial analyst, you’ll need to be able to evaluate the quality of securities, be proficient in financial analysis and spreadsheet software, and have a

good working knowledge of finance and accounting.

2

Focus on the most important skill first. You don’t have much time when you’re hunting for a job or preparing for a career transition, so focus on the most important skill first — the one that is mandatory and the one that you could use as a competitive advantage if it matches up to your strengths.

Take virtual or in-person classes. Once you know what skills you need, start enrolling in classes so that you can learn them first-hand. Check your local colleges for classes. There are also online learning courses that you can take for free or low cost. SkillShare.com and Udemy. com are community education marketplaces where you can learn from subject matter experts. Coursera.org is similar to the other two, but offers free courses from more than thirty colleges and universities.

4

Practice your skills repeatedly. Use these new skills at your job or take on freelance projects where you can practice them, plus gain a record of success and references for future work. It takes at least 10,000 hours to master a skill but when you do, you become much more valuable to your company and in your industry. The more you practice your skillsthe better you will naturally get over time with practice.

being VERY pissed off because as I turned the pages of your paper, I saw Kim Kardashian’s bare ass as part of my morning commute — without any type of warning — without any type of censorship. Why is your publication jumping on the bandwagon to assault the eyes and minds of those who aren’t the least bit interested in this woman and what she is offering? There is nothing tasteful nor useful about her or her “manufactured assets” in photos. Not everyone is obsessed with sex or sex appeal.

Re: ‘Can Kim Kardashian really #breaktheinternet?’ (Metro, Oct. 13) Was it really necessary to publish this woman’s behind for the world to see? Morals? You don’t have to be a religious fanatic to see there’s something wrong here. How about stupidity. Would she also expose her bank account or how much money she has? There are some things you just don’t do. RUTH MARTINEZ, VIA EMAIL

According to a recent poll reported in Time magazine, over 80 percent of conservatives backed net neutrality! That’s because they see past the Republican talking points (the “government takeover” malarkey) and realize that they have to be able to trust their ISPs to not censor what they read or play favorites depending on corporate whim. ISPs have already been caught modifying websites while delivering them to readers.

JEWEL, VIA EMAIL

That’s what this is really about. Net neutrality isn’t about the government taking over the Internet, or even regulating what people can say on the internet. It’s about preventing corporations from doing that. Shame on the politicians who are lying about this because big donors like Comcast and Verizon told them to. PETER ADAMS, VIA EMAIL

It was “Gray day” for the Patriots in Indianapolis Sunday night, but the results were far from gloomy for the surging visitors. Undrafted running back Jonas Gray had rushed just 32 times in 2014 prior to Sunday, but he carried the ball a whopping 38 times for 199 yards and four touchdowns against the Colts, leading the Pats to a decisive 42-20 victory over Indy (6-4) at Lucas Oil Stadium. It was the Patriots’ sixth straight victory and it moved them to an AFC-best 8-2 on the season. The Pats host the 7-3 Lions this coming Sunday. The Pats gave it to Gray early and often and the Notre Dame product rewarded the coaching staff for that decision immediately. Gray scored the first two Patriots touchdowns of the night, the first a four-yard rush with 8:37 left in the first quarter and the second, a two-yard plunge with 3:50 left in the second quarter. Rob Gronkowski punished the Colts on back-to-back pos-

another 2-yard scoring run put the Pats up, 28-13. A key run by the back on third down earlier in the third quarter also directly to a touchdown as Tim Wright did the scoring honors by hauling in a two-yard, play-action pass from Brady. Indy was on the ropes late in the third as it was down, 28-13. But a brilliant, 80-yard drive by the Colts that was capped by an Anthony Castonzo touchdown reception, gave the Colts some hope for a potential comeback. MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos

sessions in the fourth quarter as he blocked Indy safety Sergio Brown into an NBC broadcast camera on Gray’s fourth touchdown run of the night and then rumbled for a 26-yard touchdown reception with 6:46 left in the fourth quarter. The tight end’s score put the Pats up for good, 42-20. Gronkowski finished the night with four catches for 71 yards. Despite some initial success, the Colts’ air attack could never truly get going and cornerback Darrelle Revis had, arguably, his best game as a Patriot. Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton combined for just eight grabs. Both Andrew Luck and Tom Brady struggled in the first half as Luck was picked off by Devin McCourty off a tip by Revis, and Brady was picked off twice. Brady’s second interception of the first half was particularly un-Brady-like as, on third down, he flipped a pass in the direction of Gronkowski without looking, and Mike Adams had an easy INT. Luck took advantage of Brady’s miscue three plays later as he found Hakeem Nicks in the corner of the end zone to make it 14-10, New England, with less than a minute remaining in the first half. But the Colts could never solve Gray. Gray found the end zone for the third time with 3:30 left in the third and

Jose Canseco says his finger fell off during a poker game. / GETTY IMAGES

Former American League MVP Jose Canseco says that his surgically re-attached finger fell off during a game of poker last week. “My finger should have been amputated from the beginning. It was very loose with no bone to connect it,” Canseco tweeted. “It was also smelling really bad.” The former A’s, Rangers, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Rays and

Yankees slugger shot himself in the hand with a gun last month. He told police that he was cleaning his gun in the kitchen at the time of the accident. Canseco was in a joking mood about his finger this past weekend, also tweeting, “I put my finger in the freezer, anyone want finger appetizers ... or is it finger snacks.” MATT BURKE

NHL power rankings | by Rich Slate No. 1

No. 2

The Canadiens are riding the longest current win streak (five games) in the NHL and also have the most points (27). They crushed the Bruins, 5-1, last Thursday and will be at TD Garden this Saturday for an anticipated rematch.

No. 10

Penguins (12-3-1)

Blues (12-4-1)

Predators (11-4-2)

Canucks (12-6-0)

Islanders (11-6-0)

The Penguins have the best goal-differential (plus-25) in the NHL. They are 9-1-0 in their last 10 games. But signing goaltender MarcAndre Fleury to a four-year extension? That’s putting way too much faith in a guy who typically crumbles come playoff time.

We helped create the Blues bandwagon last season and where did that get us? The lesson learned is to not fully trust a team until they’ve done something in the postseason. Their upcoming road trip is tough, starting with games at Boston, on Tuesday, and at Montreal, on Thursday.

One of the under-the-radar teams in the NHL has been the Predators. If the playoffs began today, they’d be the third seed in the West. James Neal, who has nine goals, five assists and is plus-10 on the year, is proving that he was more than just Sidney Crosby’s goon sidekick in Pittsburgh.

Another Canadian team off to a surprisingly good start, you can’t ignore the fact that Vancouver’s goal-differential is plus-1. The Canucks are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games but it is hard to explain their 5-0 no-show loss at Arizona on Friday. They host Anaheim and Chicago this weekend.

The Islanders are proving to have some staying power after their great start. Other than Pittsburgh you can reasonably make the case that they could finish ahead of anyone in the marshmallowsoft Metropolitan division. They will see the Penguins this week.

Lightning (12-4-2)

Ducks (11-3-4)

Flames (11-6-2)

Kings (9-5-4)

Bruins (11-8-0)

Top to bottom, the Western Conference is superior to the East, but it’s tough to argue with the Habs, Penguins and Lightning thus far. The Lightning have scored the most goals (66) in the NHL and they have the second best goal differential (plus-18).

At full strength, the Ducks might very well be the best team in the NHL. However, it’s been a bizarre few weeks for Anaheim, starting with Corey Perry and Francois Beauchemin getting diagnosed with the mumps. They split a homeand-home with L.A. last week.

Yes, it’s highly doubtful that Calgary will be the seventh best team in the league in a month or two. But its résumé so far in the 2014-15 season is kind of impressive. The Flames have scored the most goals, 59, in the Western Conference so far.

If there is any team in the NHL to not judge too harshly in the regular season it has to be the Kings, based on their two Stanley Cups in the past three years. With the emergence of Calgary and Vancouver, the NHL’s toughest division is even harder to navigate.

You can’t say that the B’s really deserve to be this high, but then you look around at the other pretenders in this range. Boston enjoyed a long homestand with a five-game win streak but went on the road against Toronto and Montreal and got waxed.
