Yoga class offers exercise and beer Bronx. The Gun Hill Brewery hosts a yoga class in its brewery, a growing trend across the U.S. Although the Bronx might have a fraction of the yoga studios that Manhattan and Brooklyn do, the borough has something the rest of New York does not: class in a working brewery. Every Saturday, a group of yogis meet at Gun Hill Brewery, in the Williamsbridge neighborhood of the Bronx, which opened earlier this year. For an hour before the brewery opens, they practice yoga. Around noon, they roll up their mats and head to the tasting room to indulge in well-earned craft libations. “People try to find similarities in each other after class,” Mardeah Gbotoe said. “I feel like sitting down and drinking after you’ve done a ‘down dog’ together is more intimate than a blind date.” Gbotoe, 33, is a co-organizer of the group, along with Yvette Quaye Akua. The poet and Trader Joe’s employee said she had visited the brewery several times after it opened, and she was talking to Gun Hill Brewery co-owner Kieran Farrell about the pressures of opening a new business. Farrell joked about trying yoga, and Gbotoe said she “pitched the idea right then and there.” Yoga classes held in

the statement. “Refunds will also be issued to any organizations who reserved and paid for use of the rink during the time that it will be closed.” The rink occupies space between 106th and 108th streets and serves as a destination for youth and adult hockey leagues, a skating school, high school hockey teams and casual skaters. Brewery co-owner Kiernan Farrell, 45, said the brewery is happy to support the yogis and give them a space to exercise in and drink beer after. Farrell said Gun Hill Brewery is the only place that makes beer in the Bronx, and it has already received a gold medal from the prestigious Great American Beer Festival. “People didn’t expect something like this to open up [here],” Farrell said. “It’s something you see in Brooklyn, not the Bronx.” WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

French tourist arrested after climbing Brooklyn Bridge A French tourist was arrested on Sunday afternoon after he scaled the Brooklyn Bridge while looking for a perfect vantage point for a photograph. The man, identified as 23-year-old Jonothan Souid, reportedly hopped a fence and climbed a beam with camera in hand at around 12:30 p.m. before officers spotted him and arrested him on criminal trespassing charges. Souid was still undergoing questioning hours after the incident, despite having plans to fly back to France on Sunday evening. The latest Brooklyn Bridge trespassing comes two months after a 24-year-old Russian tourist named Yaroslav Kolchin climbed the bridge to snap a photo and not long after another high-profile stunt on the bridge, when two German artists reportedly scaled the span and swapped out two American flags with white flags. N, Q, R lines to undergo repairs on weeknights Riders on the N, Q and R lines can expect delays from Monday through Thursday night as the MTA does Fastrack repair work on the three lines. The service change will find N trains running in Brooklyn and Queens only

between Ditmars Blvd and Queensboro Plaza, while Q trains are rerouted via the Sixth Avenue D line in Manhattan to and from the 57th Street Station. R service will end shortly after 9 p.m. in Manhattan and Queens. Train riders are advised to use nearby stations and to take the 7 train between Queens in Manhattan. They should

be aware of key transfers at Queensboro Plaza, Atlantic Ave-Barclays Center, Jay St-MetroTech and 42nd St-Bryant Park. During the Fastrack work on these lines in June, MTA workers removed 125,900 pounds of scrap debris, scraped 49,485 feet of track and installed 21 track rails, as well as 782 track tie plates. METRO

The MTA said that the reason for the plummet in satisfaction with Metro-North service had to do with the fatal train derailment last December that killed four people. / GETTY IMAGES

MTA survey: Metro-North numbers fall after crash Manhattan. Customers were satisfied with the subway, but the Metro-North took a drubbing after last December’s train derailment. Results of the 2014 MTA customer satisfaction survey released on Friday found that more riders were satisfied with the subway than ever before. The same survey, which polled more than 30,000 riders last May and June, found a sharp decline in satisfaction with MetroNorth Railroad. On Dec. 1, 2013, a Metro-North train derailed near the Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx. Four people were killed and

more than 70 were injured in the accident. “This year’s survey results are sobering but not surprising given the challenges Metro-North has faced during the last 18 months,” Metro-North president Joseph Giulietti said. “Our mission is to provide safe, efficient transportation — and when we do that, customers are satisfied. We are rebuilding Metro-North, and much progress has been made but much more needs to be done. We must and we will regain the trust of our customers.” The MTA began tracking customer satisfaction rates of the subway and buses, Metro-North, Long Island Railroad and MTA bridges and tunnels in 2010. Wendy.Biddlecombe@metro.us

Satisfied with subway According to the survey, 78 percent of subway riders said they were satisfied or very satisfied with services — up 2 percentage points from last year — which is the highest satisfaction rate for all of the MTA. •

The survey found more people are riding the subway during rush

hour and non-rush hour, and 51 percent said they were satisfied that the trains were not too crowded during peak hours. •

Satisfaction rates for bus and LIRR riders, as well as drivers who use MTA bridges and tolls, were unchanged.

Islamic State militants have beheaded another American hostage, Peter Kassig, issuing a video claiming the killing on Sunday and warning the United States they would kill other U.S. citizens “on your streets.” President Barack Obama confirmed the death of the aid worker in what he called “an act of pure evil by a terrorist group that the world rightly associates with inhumanity.” The announcement of Kassig’s death, the fifth such killing of a Western captive by the group, formed part of a 15-minute video posted online in which Islamic State showed the beheadings of at least 14 men it said were pilots and officers loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Obama defends health care law President Barack Obama defended the transparency of the Affordable Care Act after one of the White House’s advisers on the reform said the law passed, in part, because of the “stupidity” of American voters. Obama said the law was extensively analyzed and written about before its passage in 2010, and in subsequent debates. “The fact that some adviser who never worked on our staff expressed an opinion that I completely disagree with ... is no reflection on the actual process that was run,” Obama said during a press conference at the Group of 20 leaders meeting in Brisbane, Australia. “I would just advise every press outlet here, go back and pull up every clip, every story. ... It was a tough debate.” Obama was responding to the comments of Jonathan Gruber, a health economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. REUTERS

$1 billion divorce

Why Harold Hamm’s ex-wife didn’t win more Oklahoma divorce judge Howard Haralson awarded Sue Ann Hamm just 6 percent of the $18 billion fortune her lawyers say the couple had amassed at the

start of the divorce trial in August. Harold Hamm called the judgment “fair and equitable,” but his ex-wife called it unfair and plans to appeal. Several divorce lawyers said they were surprised by how small the award was. REUTERS

‘I Love Ferguson’ signs and T-shirts lift morale Fundraising tool. Sales of “I Love Ferguson” merchandise are intended to help damaged businesses. The streets of Ferguson, Missouri, bear two hallmarks of the months of sometimes violent protests that followed the August police shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer. One is boarded-up shop windows, the other, everpresent “I Love Ferguson” signs, T-shirts and stickers. The signs were dreamed up by the city’s former mayor, Brian Fletcher, 55, a week after the Aug. 9 death of Michael Brown provoked rioting in which businesses were burned out. An “I Love Ferguson”

If not under siege, the St. Louis suburb is clearly on edge as residents await word on whether the grand jury reviewing Brown’s death will bring criminal charges against the police

SEAL is opening up about bagging Osama bin Laden Boston. We spoke with Robert O’Neill about baseball, terrorism and his riveting career as a Navy SEAL. It was fall in 2004, and the man who would years later become known as the guy who shot Osama bin Laden was going through the rigorous selection process for Navy SEAL Team Six near Washington, D.C. Team Six is considered to be an elite, top-tier counterterrorism unit, and the selection process weeds out many SEALs. So Robert O’Neill’s days were consumed with challenges both mentally and physically draining. And

his nights? They were filled with Red Sox baseball. “The training was so hard, and the only thing I looked forward to was getting through the day so I could watch the Red Sox play, said O’Neill, who is now retired from the SEALs. “That’s really how I was introduced to baseball, because I wasn’t a big baseball fan growing up. O’Neill, a Montana native, would make it onto Team Six, and the Sox would win their first World Series in 86 years, coming back from a 0-3 hole against the nemesis New York Yankees to win the American League pennant before sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals. “I remember the way that Big Papi stepped up

Can all-new women’s only hair system regrow thicker fuller hair? Clinical results say yes!

The Keranique Complete Hair Regrowth System contains a hair treatment that is actually the only FDA-approved ingredient that’s clinically proven to fight hair loss and actually re-grow women’s hair.

If you think hair loss only affects middle-aged men, think again. “Over 30 million women in the U.S. have some form of hair loss, and if they do nothing it will get worse shares internationally renowned hair restoration surgeon, Dr. Robert Leonard. There’s a number of reasons why hair loss in women is now increasingly more common: crash dieting, low iron levels, hormone changes and certain medications can take their toll. Genes also play a large role. If a woman’s mother has thin hair or bald patches then chances are exceedingly greater for the daughter to suffer as well. And suffer they do. “In our culture, hair is bound up in notions of womanhood and sexual attractiveness. Plus, we live in such an appearancedriven society that our looks often become one of the largest factors contributing to our self esteem, said leading psychologist Dr. Linda Papadopoulos. We all have about 100,000 hairs on our head. And everyday we naturally lose between 50 to 100 strands, but how do you know if you’re losing too much?

“Many of my female patients come in after they have thought for some time that their hair was thinning. Sadly by that time they have already ORVW D VLJQLÂż FDQW DPRXQW RI KDLU ´ says Dr. Leonard. 7R KHOS JDXJH KDLU ORVV Âż QG D FRQ sistent ‘measuring stick.’ It could be anything from a hair brush, the drain in your shower or even the head rest in your car. Everyday make visual reference to the area and clean it off, then repeat the process. If you notice that your hair is falling out at a faster rate, then action on your part is necessary. The good news is that treatment for hair loss is easier than HYHU WR Âż QG <RX MXVW QHHG WR NQRZ where to look. “It is never too late to FIGHT HAIR LOSS and regrow your hair.â€? adds Dr. Leonard. Look for products with proven FDA ingredients and have a high satisfaction rating. And as always, the sooner you do something about it the better off you’ll be.

Investor concerns

Poll: World economy worst in two years

Electrician, Mackinac Bridge Authority

The world economy is in its worst shape in two years, with the euro region and emerging markets deteriorating, and the danger of deflation rising, according to a Bloomberg Global Poll of international investors. A plurality of 38 percent of those surveyed this week described the global economy as worsening, more than double the number who said that in the last poll in July and the most since September 2012, when Europe was mired in a recession. Much of the concern is again focused on the euro area: Almost twothirds of those polled said its economy was weakening, while 89 percent saw disinflation or deflation as a greater threat there than inflation over the next year.

G20. Leaders vow to fight climate change, grow world economy Leaders from the G20 group of nations agreed on Sunday to boost flagging global growth, tackle climate change and crack down on tax avoidance, even as ties between the West and Russia plummeted to a new low over the crisis in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin left the G20 summit in Brisbane early as President Barack Obama accused Russia of invading Ukraine and Britain warned of a possible “frozen conflict” in Europe. Several Western nations threatened further sanctions if Russia did not withdraw troops and weapons from Ukraine. “There is a cost to sanctions, but there would be a far greater cost in allowing a frozen conflict on the continent of Europe to be created and maintained,” said British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Security and climate change overshadowed G20 talks on boosting global economic growth at the summit, although the leaders did sign off on a package of measures to add an extra 2.1 percentage points to global growth over five years. “This will add more than $2 trillion to the global economy and create millions of jobs,” said a communique issued at the end of the meeting. How to spend the holidays away from home Etiquette. Learn how to be the perfect houseguest this holiday season. Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and for many college students it is simply too expensive to head home for the long weekend — which means that they will probably be spending the holiday with the family of a local friend. For students who’ve never spent Thanksgiving away from home before, it can be difficult to know exactly what’s expected of them. “I think there is an urge when you are young to think that you are just visiting your friend, rather

Along with her friend and colleague Jaya Saxena, Pratt is the co-founder of Uncommon Courtesy, a blog that tackles the modern-day etiquette problems many Millennials face. We talked to the duo about how to students can gracefully survive Thanksgiving in someone else’s home.

Never forget that you are a guest. “It’s just making sure you clean up after yourself,” says Saxena. “Make sure that you pitch in. Be aware that other families do things differently.” Bring a gift for your hosts. New program allows high school students to take advanced biology for free Good news for ambitious high school students eager to rack up college credits: You can now take AP Biology right from home — for free. Rice University rolled out the new online course last month in a partnership with edX, an Internet platform created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University that offers massive open online courses (known as MOOCs) to students. The AP biology course is the first edX to be designed specifically for high school students. Because AP Biology traditionally has lots of lab-based work, some wonder how appealing the course will be. Taylor Swift contemplates a real cold play All of the year’s gossip stories appear to be converging — and just in time for the holidays! Think of it as the Celebrity Singularity. The latest evidence? This Star magazine story that Taylor Swift — despite recent protestations that she’s so over the concept of dating for now — has set her sights on Coldplay frontman and Gwyneth Paltrow ex, Chris Martin, despite his on-again, off-again relationship with Jennifer Lawrence. Deep breaths, everybody. “Taylor would love to make Chris her new boyfriend,” a source tells the magazine. Wow, that sounds like some conscious coupling there, eh? “She’s taking advantage of how Jen’s and Chris’ busy schedules are keeping them apart. She can sense that their relationship is on shaky ground, so she’s moving in — fast.” All we need is a tag-team response from Blake Lively and Martha Stewart, and we’re set. In all seriousness, though, can someone explain to me why Chris Martin is suddenly the hottest thing in Hollywood since sliced Clooney? I’m mystified.

Band Aid 30 This weekend saw the debut of Band Aid 30’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas,” the updated holiday song you’ll be hearing hundreds of times this season into the new year. While it’s hard to know how our feelings will change over these myriad listens, upon first experiencing the song in its new format — now including lyrics about Ebola, and featuring current stars — it feels, well, weird. But in the end, it’s still the same thing; a bunch of European pop stars, raising money for a good cause, but coming across a little bit culturally insensitive. Does James Wolk have something on his face? Interview. The “Mad Men” and “Always Woodstock” star doesn’t always get it when you recognize him. “Always Woodstock” star James Wolk has become a familiar face to viewers all over, thanks to work on the small screen on “Mad Men,” “Shameless,” “Happy Endings,” “The Crazy Ones” and a slew of other shows. But he still sometimes forgets about that when he runs into those viewers in public. Have you ever had your own quarter-life crisis like the one Catherine (Allison Miller) has in “Always Woodstock” — where you start to question everything you’ve been doing with your life? You know, Catherine obviously goes through a huge quarter-life crisis. For me, I think getting into my late 20s really shifted where I place importance in my life. There are definitely a few times I could point to, a pivotal time where there was a change in my focus. I don’t know if that’s a quarter-life crisis so much as a quarter-life, like, “taking stock of.” Like a readjustment? Yeah, a quarter-life readjustment, perfect. [Laughs] It doesn’t sound as dramatic. Hey, maybe mine’s still coming, who knows. You never know. Thank God I’ve been busy, and it’s been an incredible journey. No career doubts, nope. [Laughs] Do you get a sense when people see you on the street which TV show they’re recognizing you from? I don’t even know. It’s a real crapshoot at this point. It’s awesome that I can’t point to one thing and people kind of come up with different shows. This was the best one: Somebody the other day was like, “You know who

you look exactly like?” And I think it’s maybe because I don’t carry myself in a [famous] way. I don’t come in with my sunglasses and my head down. I don’t come in as though I am anyone because, No. 1, I don’t think that I am, and I also kind of forget that I’ve been on these shows. So I walk in and I’m waiting to order my coffee or something, and someone will look at me and I’ll be like, “Do I have

something on my face?” What’s going on? I literally forget that I’m an actor. So I think that translates, and then they go, “You know who you look like?” Sometimes I’ll be like, “It’s funny you say that, I get that a lot,” or sometimes I’ll just be like, “Yeah, it’s me.”

Returning to roles as they get older (but not necessarily wiser) Sequels. They thought they were out, but someone brought them back in: Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels spent two decades away from their “Dumb and Dumber” doofuses. But fate — or the promise of lots of money — meant it was time for a long-awaited sequel. They’re not alone. Here’s a look at some of the most interesting callbacks that Hollywood has ever attempted, with varying results. MATT PRIGGE 30 years

Jack Lemmon & Walter Matthau Characters: Felix Ungar & Oscar Madison Film: “The Odd Couple II” (1998) Previous installment: “The Odd Couple” (1968)

23 years

Lemmon and Matthau weren’t the only Felix and Oscar. The Broadway hit-turned-movie became a hit on TV, with Tony Randall and Jack Klugman. After Lemmon and Matthau scored with “Grumpy Old Men,” they dusted off their old roles.

Character: Kevin Flynn Film: “Tron: Legacy” (2010) Previous installment: “Tron” (1982)

25 years

Character: Norman Bates Film: “Psycho II” (1983) Previous installment: “Psycho” (1960)

“Tron” amassed a cult big enough for Disney to try again 28 years later, which meant Jeff Bridges’ feisty computer programmer was now in his 60s. The sequel pits him against an evil, digitally preserved version of his younger self.

Jeff Bridges

Paul Newman Character: Eddie Felson Film: “The Color of Money” (1986) Previous installment: “The Hustler” (1961)

Anthony Perkins

Sylvester Stallone Character: John Rambo Film: “Rambo” (2008) Previous installment: “Rambo III” (1988)

As Perkins often complained, “Psycho” pigeonholed him into a series of creepy roles. He finally owned it with this surprisingly great follow-up. He returned to the role twice more, even directing 1986’s “Psycho III.”

After the semi-surprise success of “Rocky Balboa” (done a “mere” 16 years after “Rocky V”), Sly dusted off John Rambo, too. Here, he’s the mumbly savior of Burmese peasants, killing villains in ways more grisly than before.

19 years

Classics don’t often get sequels, yet Newman’s pool shark returned, under the direction of no less than Martin Scorsese, and teamed with an immediately post-“Top Gun” Tom Cruise. Newman won his Oscar for this film.

Harrison Ford Character: Indiana Jones Film: “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” (2008) Previous installment: “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1989)

No one much enjoys this fourth Indy romp, with a 60-something Ford largely grumpy and uninterested in working the wry charm that made the character such an atypically rich action hero. ALL PHOTOS PROVIDED

Finally, some new New Pornographers Live music. Singer A.C. Newman discusses the long gap between releases and why his band needed to unleash some bouncy “Bruisers. Though it’s been four years since the New Pornographers’ last album (2010’s “Together), lead singer A.C. Newman says it wasn’t intended to seem like a long gap. “For me, it wasn’t like I was waiting around, he says. “Right around the time when we were finishing touring on the last Pornographers record, I found out my wife was pregnant. And then my son was born

in February 2012, and then I put out my solo album around the end of 2012, and then as soon as I finished that, I thought, ‘All right, time to do a Pornographers record.’ The result is “Brill Bruisers, an upbeat rocker of an album. The name comes from the Brill Building in New York, where generations of songwriters punched the clock and penned a cavalcade of hits. Carole King spent time in its hallowed halls, as did Neil Diamond. “I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of a song factory, says Newman. “It’s from another age. The upbeat sound of the album was fairly intentional (it’s nearly impossible not to bob your head along to the title track). “My last solo record was downtempo, says New-

man about 2012’s “Shut Down the Streets. “It was very consciously sad, with a certain type of singer/songwriter low-key vibe, he explains. “Once I got that out of my system, I said, ‘It would be great to make a really upbeat record.’ As the band heads into their 15th year, and the members find solo success (particularly Neko Case, who Newman says is the hardest to schedule around), the question arises of what the future holds for them. Not to worry, says Newman: “There’s so much music to be inspired by. Any given artist touches on so little in their career. I feel like there’s an endless amount of permutations. There’s an endless amount of music that can be made.

Newman is a new father, but says it hasn’t changed what he likes to write about. “You ďŹ nd yourself being very much the same person,â€? he says. However: “It makes me think more of like a legacy that I’m leaving for my son. But all that doesn’t make me want to be better,â€? he adds. “It doesn’t change the way I write music. Nicki Minaj also recently made waves with her sexually explicit track and video “Anaconda,” which includes the lyrics “Oh my gosh, look at her butt,” showing a squatting Minaj in just a bustier and thong. Curvaceous icons date back centuries, but booties didn’t get much attention in the West until the Renaissance, when artists like Rubens and Rembrandt typified the e Grand Baroque style with Gr paintings of voluptuous p women, says Bernard Anw drieu, cultural historian of dr the th body at the University of Rouen, France. One thing is for sure: They can’t be achieved by eating dessert. “You might be able to work on it, but mostly it comes from a genetic background, bringing new standards for the rest of womanhood,” says Andrieu. The squat is a classic exercise, easy to do anywhere and works wonders. Make sure you’re not bending forward; always keep your back straight as you go up and down. Your butt goes backward and your knees should always be on the same vertical line as your feet. Repeat for 30 seconds, then try 1 minute. To really accentuate the effect and develop the posterior, use a workout bar and add some weight, but keep it under 15 squats.

By making your waist skinnier, you can give the impression that your butt is bigger — which Kardashian used to great effect on the Paper cover. To make your waist thinner, do a side plank and hold it for 30 seconds to 1 minute. You can add some weights to make it harder and more efficient. For an even tighter sculpt, sit on one side of your bum and try to touch your feet with your hands, while pushing your legs up. Repeat until you feel the burn!

Get on all fours. Extend one leg toward the ceiling, keeping your back straight. Hold for 30 seconds. As it gets easier, try to hold it for a minute on each leg. For better results, use an exercise rubber band or ankle weights. If you just push the leg without extending it, you will work on the back of your thighs, which helps create the curve between the leg and the butt.

Smokers more likely to develop chronic pain Location of study: U.S. Results: It appears that smokers with new back pain are less likely to recover. They’re also signiďŹ cantly more likely to eventually develop chronic pain. Researchers found that two areas of the brain associated with addictive behavior and motivated learning play a crucial role. (Circuitry between these regions is crucial to the development of chronic pain.) In the study, this circuitry was particularly active among smokers. SigniďŹ cance: Smokers seem much less resilient to an episode of pain when compared to nonsmokers, suggesting a relationship between addictive behavior and the development of chronic pain.

Anxiety linked to brain damage, Alzheimer’s Location of study: Toronto Subjects: 376 adults aged 55 to 91

Addictive behaviors like smoking could be linked to chronic pain. GETTY IMAGES

Results: People who suer from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are already thought to be at a higher risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease. Now new research suggests that people with MCI who also battle anxiety are at an even higher risk. In a recent study, these individuals showed anywhere from a 33 to 135 percent increase in Alzheimer’s risk, depending on the severity of their anxiety. SigniďŹ cance: Researchers say that while late-life depression is commonly recognized as a risk factor for Alzheimer’s, the risk associated with anxiety wasn’t

so clear. “Our ďŹ ndings suggest that clinicians should routinely screen for anxiety in people who have memory problems,â€? principal investigator Dr. Linda Mah said in a statement.

Promiscuous men less likely to get prostate cancer Location of study: Montreal Subjects: Over 3,000 men who answered a questionnaire partially focused on sexual activity Results: Casual sex seems to

come with a signiďŹ cant fringe beneďŹ t for men: Having a higher number of female sex partners throughout their lifetime correlates with a lower risk for prostate cancer. In fact, having sex with more than 20 women cuts their risk by 28 percent. Another interesting twist researchers found was that when compared to men who had never slept with another man, men who had more than 20 male partners in a lifetime were twice as likely to develop prostate cancer. SigniďŹ cance: It appears that having several female partners over a lifetime might be protective against prostate cancer, while having several male partners could be harmful. However, researchers clariďŹ ed that the study only included a small population of men in the Montreal area who reported having sex with other men. They speculate that having a high frequency of ejaculation may be behind the ďŹ ndings.

Certified OPEN HHAs HOUSES

Over the years, I’ve pushed all of you to become subject matter experts because that’s what companies are searching for. Hard skills, such as being able to program in certain computer languages, are measurable and in high demand. In a new study commissioned by my company, in partnership with ElanceoDesk.com, we found that HR professionals focus more on hard skills when hiring than soft skills (like attitude or personality). Fifty-five percent said they focused more on hard skills while 21 percent focused on soft skills. Here are some tips for developing your hard skills so you can compete:

1

Identify the skills you need. Based on your interests and the types of jobs you’re applying to, you should come up

with a list of skills that are required. Look at the job descriptions for the ones you want to apply to and see what skills they all require and have in common. For example, if you’re interested in being a financial analyst, you’ll need to be able to evaluate the quality of securities, be proficient in financial analysis and spreadsheet software, and have a good working knowledge of finance and accounting.

2

Focus on the most important skill ďŹ rst. You don’t have much time when you’re hunting for a job or preparing for a career transition, so focus on the most important skill first — the one that is mandatory and the one that you could use as a competitive advantage if it matches up to your strengths.

3

Take virtual or inperson classes. Once you know what skills you need, start enrolling in classes so that you can learn them first-hand. Check your local colleges for classes. There are also online learning courses that you can take for free or low cost. SkillShare. com and Udemy.com are community education marketplaces where you can learn from subject

matter experts. Coursera. org is similar to the other two, but offers free courses from more than thirty colleges and universities.

4

Practice your skills repeatedly. Use these new skills at your job or take on freelance projects where you can practice them, plus

gain a record of success and references for future work. It takes at least 10,000 hours to master a skill but when you do, you become much more valuable to your company and in your industry. The more you practice your skillsthe better you will naturally get over time with practice.

Re: ‘Can Kim Kardashian #breaktheinternet?’ (Metro, Oct. 13) I HAD to relay my feelings as being VERY pissed off because as I turned the pages of your paper, I saw Kim Kardashian’s bare ass as part of my morning commute — without any type of warning — without any type of censorship. Why is your publication jumping on the bandwagon to assault the eyes and minds of those who aren’t the least bit interested in this woman and what she is offering? There is nothing tasteful nor useful about her or her “manufactured assets” in photos. Not everyone is obsessed with sex or sex appeal.

According to a recent poll in Time magazine, over 80 percent of conservatives backed net neutrality! That’s because they see past the Republican talking points (the “government takeover” malarkey) and realize that they have to be able to trust their ISPs to not censor what they read or play favorites depending on corporate whim. Net neutrality isn’t about the government taking over the Internet, or even regulating what people can say. It’s about preventing corporations from doing that. PETER ADAMS, VIA EMAIL

Giants’ offense is roughed up in loss to 49ers

NFL. The 49ers’ ‘D’ never allowed Eli Manning or Rashad Jennings to get rolling on Sunday.

Rueben Randle and the Giants’ offense fell flat against the 49ers on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. / GETTY IMAGES

The Giants have now lost five straight games, but they at least went down with a fight Sunday — something that was mostly missing in recent weeks. Nevertheless, a loss is still a loss, and with their tough 16-10 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers (6-4) at MetLife Stadium, it might be time for the Giants (3-7) to start looking at the NFL Draft clock. Quarterback Eli Manning came into the game with just six interceptions this season and had been playing far better than the version Giants fans saw last season. But on this Sunday, the bad side of Manning emerged. He threw five interceptions, including his final — and most crucial — pick at the goal line as he was trying to get his team the go-ahead touchdown. The oft-embattled sig-

nal-caller wasn’t the only mistake-prone Giant, but he was the leader in the clubhouse.

1

G-Men run down The Giants’ rushing game was a sore spot ever since Rashad Jennings went down five weeks ago with an MCL sprain. But even with Jennings back, Big Blue still had its share of trouble as Jennings’ return wasn’t nearly the saving grace the Giants thought it might have been. Jennings tallied just 59 yards on 18 carries as the Giants rushing attack had little bite. The prime example of New York’s rushing struggles came on a failed fourthand-1 attempt near midfield, with 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter, that saw the offensive line shoved into the lap of Jennings and the running back stoned

a half-yard short of the marker.

2

Too little, too early Manning started the game hot, going 3-of-3 for 57 yards with a touchdown to tight end Larry Donnell, but he struggled thereafter. Manning finished 2-of-45 for 280 yards and was sacked twice, although he was harried and knocked down numerous other times.

3

The good news The starting wideouts were about the lone bright spots for the Giants’ offense. In spite of Manning, Rueben Randle had seven catches for 112 yards, while rookie Odell Beckham Jr. added six receptions for 93 yards.

Chiefs, Rams pull off major upsets NFL. The reigning AFC and NFC champions went down with a thud in Week 11.

Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs rumbled over Seattle. / GETTY IMAGES

Most should have realized the Chiefs (7-3) were for real when they blasted the Patriots in late September, but Kansas City cemented itself as a contender Sunday at home by edging the defending Super Bowl champs, 24-20. Jamaal Charles ran for 159 yards and a pair of touchdowns while the Chiefs defense kept Marshawn Lynch out of the end zone despite his 124 yards on the ground. Seattle fell to 6-4.

Bears 21, Vikings 13 The Bears (4-6) broke out of a major funk against the Vikings (4-6) on Sunday as Jay Cutler tossed three touchdowns and racked up 330 yards through the air at Soldier Field.
