Fernet: No longer just the ‘bartender’s handshake’ Boston. A little-known digestif is quickly gaining steam as a common cocktail in Boston’s restaurant and bar industry. The story might be apocryphal. Some say it was 10 years ago, others say, no, it was more like 15. The point is, at some point, someone in Boston’s nightlife industry brought a bottle of fernet from the West Coast to Boston and proceeded to force friends, who also happened to be bartenders, to drink it. Fernet is, as even its most ardent advocates will tell you, an acquired taste. It’s supposed to be a digestif, something to help mellow one’s stomach after a filling meal. It’s used as the bitter belly of many classic cocktails. It has some spice to it. Some would say its taste is medicinal. The unkind have compared it to certain coughsoothing medications. It would, eventually, become a staple amongst restaurant and bar industry folks in town, becoming an unofficial “liquid handshake” between bartenders or waitstaff when

they were out and about. “I’m not sure how it started, but it was definitely a thing in San Francisco years ago, and that’s one of the hubs of mixology in the U.S., so it was just a matter of time before it spread to cities on the East Coast,” said Michael Boughton, a 31-yearold who grew up in Connecticut and is now the beverage director for Boston Nightlife Ventures, which includes Wink & Nod and Forum. Nowadays, it’s not only a greeting between off-duty mixologists or those looking for relief after gorging themselves on rigatoni. Shooting fernet, you could say, is a thing. “It was embraced and understood by the industry eight to 10 years ago,” said Jackson Cannon, a 49-year-old who grew up outside of Washington, D.C., and is now an owner of The Hawthorne. “And yeah, it’s definitely broadening out. It was an insiders’ shot and now I’m buying five cases every other week.” Dylan Black, a 40-year-old Cambridge native who owns Green Street in Central Square, also grasps for an explanation. “I don’t know if it started out as a dare or as a backlash to the shots of the time, which were

His father, Rabbi Isadore Twersky, was a Harvard professor who died in 1997. “Rabbi Mosheh Twersky, who was murdered while at prayer in Jerusalem this morning, was the son of my late and revered colleague, Professor Isadore Twersky, founding director of Harvard’s Center for Jewish Studies,” director Eric Nelson of
the Center for Jewish Studies at Harvard University said in an emailed statement. “I know that I speak for all of us in the CJS community when I say that we are heartbroken at the news of this unspeakable act of sacrilegious cruelty. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Twersky family at this terribly sad and difficult time,” it said. The New England Revolution in Boston? It could happen. As first reported by The Boston Globe, the Kraft family, who owns the Revolution as well as the Patriots, are said to be eyeing a South Boston parcel in the shadow of I-93 on Frontage Road. Five killed in attack at Jerusalem synagogue
Painful Varicose Veins?
Intolerance. Attack by Palestinians comes amid wave of deaths on both sides of conflict. A pair of Palestinians armed with butcher’s cleavers and a gun killed four worshipers and an Israeli police officer at a synagogue in Jerusalem in an attack that escalated months of violence in the city. Three of the victims had dual U.S. and Israeli citizenship, and the fourth was an Israeli and British citizen. The two assailants, both from east Jerusalem, were shot and killed, The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine claimed responsibility, saying in a email that the attack was a “natural response” to the Israeli occupation. Israel’s Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch urged soldiers and security guards to start carrying their weapons even when off-duty.

Medics for the Zaka emergency service said they found the victims wrapped in prayer shawls and holding prayer books lying in pools of blood. One worshiper’s arm had been chopped off, Zaka said. Tension in Jerusalem has been heightened by disputes over prayer rights at the contested shrine known to Muslims as the al-Aqsa mosque and to Jews as the Temple Mount,
and by the death of a Palestinian bus driver. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas denounced the synagogue attack and called for a sustained period of “complete calm.” He’s urged Jews be barred from the al-Aqsa mosque complex and condemned the bus driver’s death as “a heinous crime.” An Israeli autopsy determined it was a suicide. CEO pay exceeded tax payments at seven top US firms Twenty-five of the 100 highest-paid U.S. CEOs earned more last year than their companies paid in federal income

‘Breaking Bad’ meets ‘Frozen’ Ah, Disney hits and critically acclaimed TV drama — two great tastes that taste great together. The good people at Animeme have created the most delightful of mashups, “Do You Want to Build a Meth Lab?” The song — and accompanying animation — blends “Frozen” and “Breaking Bad” in such a seamless way that you’d think they told the same story. Beware, though: MAJOR “Breaking Bad” spoilers contained within.
Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are apparently ridiculously indulgent parents, and The Times is on it! Jaden and Willow Smith sat down with The New York Times’ T Magazine to talk about their music, creativity in general, energies, philosophy — really, all sorts of things that reinforce why giving teens a platform to pontificate is a bad idea. But it’s too late, they were given the platform, so let’s all take a moment to bask in the pretension.
On creativity: “We’re just trying to make music that we think is cool. We don’t think a lot of the music out there is that cool. So we make our own music. We don’t have any song that we like to listen to on the P.C.H. by any other artist, you know?” JADEN

On life goals: “I have a goal to be just the most craziest person of all time. And when I say craziest, I mean, like, I want to do like Olympic-level things. On education: “Kids who go to normal school are so teenagery, so angsty. ...You never learn anything in school. Think about how many car accidents happen every day. Driver’s ed? What’s up? I still haven’t been to driver’s ed because if everybody I know has been in an accident, I can’t see how driver’s ed is really helping them out.” JADEN “I went to school for one year. The best experience because I was, like, ‘Oh, now I know why kids are so depressed.’ But it was the worst experience because I was depressed.” WILLOW
Neil Young, rock’s resident cranky uncle, is boycotting Starbucks over a lawsuit challenging Vermont’s new genetically modified food labeling law. “I used to line up and get my latte every day, but yesterday was my last one,” Young writes on his Website. “If we can generate enough attention, we can push Starbucks to withdraw its support for the lawsuit and then pressure other companies to do the same.” A spokesman for Starbucks, however, claims Young is off-base. “The petition claiming that Starbucks is part of this litigation is completely false and we have asked the petitioners to correct their description of our position,” a company statement reads. Is it weird that I lost a little respect for Young when he admitted he drank lattes from Starbucks every day? I mean, that just doesn’t sit right.

Q&A JEFFREY WRIGHT ON THE POLITICS OF ‘THE HUNGER GAMES’ Interview. This Tony winner says we’re not as critical of corporations as we are of our government.
JEFFREY WRIGHT GETTY IMAGES FOR THE AFRICAN-AME
Jeffrey Wright doesn’t do a ton of splashy blockbusters; he’s a respectable thespian — a Tony-winner for “Angels in America,â€? a man of the stage and artistic movies like “Basquiat.â€? But “The Hunger Gamesâ€? franchise is different: it’s politically complex. In “Mockingjay — Part 1,â€? he reprises his role as tech master Beetee, now confined to a wheelchair as he aids the rebellion, with Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) as their mascot. The third ďŹ lm is so dierent
from the ďŹ rst two. How did you view the evolution of the politics here? This is the tricky side of these stories. The first book establishes the landscape, the rules through which we view these characters. The second book blows that up. And the third book is about the consequences of that, and this attempt to reassemble the broken pieces of a society at war with itself. It’s intense and messy by design. At the same time, it really begins to hit at the heart of the matter in real life. There are moments within this film that seem like moments, for me, right out of a news broadcast. I’m not sure if that speaks to the relevance and the topicality of this film, or if it speaks to the ways in which news reporting is fictionalized today. It’s probably a combination of the two. Some people — right and left — have spotted elements of our government in the Capitol, particularly the NSA. What’s great about these books and these films is they’re wide open to inter-
Jerey Wright reprises his role as tech wizard Beetee in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1.â€? / MURRAY CLOSE Darker ďŹ lms
Close to the edge The bigger ďŹ lms you tend to do — not just these but the Bond ďŹ lms, in which you play Felix Leiter — have darker edges. Is that the draw? These ďŹ lms, and the Bond ďŹ lms too, have a younger pretation. Everyone can apply their own politics and their own concerns and perspectives onto these storylines. I don’t see the NSA in anything that’s represented in the Capitol. Corporations are more representative of the Capitol to me than our government, generally. Our government has to be managed properly and led responsibly, but at least it has a security imperative. ...
audience. I like that these are ďŹ lms that touch on all these themes, whether they’re social themes or political themes, but ďŹ lter them through a lens that young minds can appreciate. I think that’s healthy. Particularly for ďŹ lms of this scale, they have a healthy layer of
cynicism. We try to make them as thrilling as possible ... but also really try to honor the more tangible and more resonant personal themes, and do that in a way that’s reective of and not distracting away from the world outside the theater.
But the corporations have zero imperative. They only have a profit imperative. Yet we seem at times to be more up in arms about the government than these leviathan corporations that are digging into personal liberties solely for the sake of making shareholders happy.
You have to balance those threats with the protection of civil liberties. Whoever said government was there to promote freedom got it wrong. Government’s the opposite; it’s about restricting freedoms. ... Some people when they’re free are a—holes.
Still, any government has to deal with actual threats versus civil liberties.

Eddie Redmayne vs. science Interview. Despite playing Stephen Hawking, the actor didn’t become a physicist nerd.
EDDIE REDMAYNE ROCKS A PURPLE SUIT? IS HE THE COOLEST PHYSICIST EVER? NO. THAT WOULD BE HAWKING. GETTY IMAGES
Eddie Redmayne is sorry when he discovers the film of “Les Miserables — in which he plays moony revolutionary Marius — is sometimes shown on a giant screen in Times Square. “I apologize for this, he says. “That’s not what you want to run into when you’re going down Times Square — a giant freckled head. He’s also forthright about his lack of scientific bona fides, despite playing no less than Stephen Hawking in the biopic “The Theory of Everything, which traces him from school through coping with motor neuron disease. Have journalists been grilling you about science? That was the great fear. I got through all of the “Les Miz press tour, and everyone would say, “Would you sing something? Please sing something! I thought at least this one would be easier. I got to San Francisco, and there were all these tech science newspapers. They were like, “Tell me about string theory! “Please, no! I’ll sing for you! Are you a science nerd? Absolutely not. I gave up science when I was 14 years old. I really am one of those people
whose brain can’t cope with that. However hard I tried — and I did try hard — it didn’t take. I met one of Stephen’s old students, who’s now a professor in London. He was genuinely telling me about the intricacies of space time. And I was like, “No, no, no, back to the beginning. Imagine I’m 7. But it was riveting. Do you understand science better now? I’m a bit better. Someone asked me if I could give a lecture on all the things in the film, and I said, “I could. It would last about three minutes. When you met Hawking, what types of things did you pick up, especially considering you’re playing him even pre-disease, when he’s young? He said his voice when he was younger was very slurred. There’s documentary footage from the ’80s of him speaking, and he’s completely incomprehensible to us. But Jane [his wife] and his students understood him. His students would come to work for him early in order to learn how to understand him. I also saw his brilliant humor, razor-sharp wit and mischief. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Visit Metro.us to watch Eddie Redmayne discuss meeting Hawking. The funny side
The film stresses Hawking’s sense of humor. That smile when you’re with him, the world lights up. He uses it as shorthand, because it takes him so long to say things. A smile will be yes and an ever-so-slight grimace will be no. I got to see ďŹ rst-hand how expressive his eyebrows are. I heard stories from Jane and his nurses. His one nurse said she had just graduated from training and her ďŹ rst job interview was with Stephen Hawking. She spent all night researching, prepping on her medical stu. She arrived to meet him and the only question he asked her was, “Can you make poached eggs?â€? I think she lied and said yes, and he hired her. [Laughs]

A few ‘Bad Jews’ debate the finer points of Judaism Review. Speakeasy Stage Company’s latest is wickedly funny. The gloves are off in SpeakEasy Stage Company’s blisteringly funny production of “Bad Jews,” a darkly comic satire that’ll make you cringe and guffaw at the same time. All hell breaks loose when three cousins spend the night of their grandfather’s funeral in an Upper West Side studio apartment. Two are vying for possession of an heirloom piece of jewelry that means so much to them, they’ll stop at nothing to win the prize. The
third simply wants to stay out of it. The moment Daphna (Alison McCartan) opens her mouth, Eric Levenson’s already claustrophobic set begins to feel like the hellish confines found in Sartre’s “No Exit.” The woman-on-theverge feeling increases exponentially with the arrival of her archnemesis, cousin Liam (Victor Shopov) and his shiksa girlfriend Melody (Gillian Mariner Gordon). Jonah (Alex Marz), Liam’s younger brother, desperately tries to remain as neutral as Switzerland in the overall contretemps. Daphna (the Hebrew version of Diana, her birth name, now only used by Liam) is an

most vile moments hilarious. After one especially vicious attack, Daphna turns, sits and sweetly asks, “So how’s school?” There’s no denying McCartan and Shopov deliver extraordinary performances. But it wouldn’t work without the stellar, understated excellence

The Weekly Yelp. Boston’s best poutine To some (read: all Québecois), fried potatoes, brown gravy and cheese curds comprise the holy trinity of comforting street food. More than a few Boston eateries have taken the Q, serving up scrumptious smothered spuds. This week, we’re poutine on the ritz!

Roxy’s Gourmet Grilled Cheese 485 Cambridge St., Allston I’m telling you, the poutine finds me. But anytime I see it, I gotta try it. I have to see how it stacks up to REAL poutine, like Montreal poutine. This particular specimen was delicious and interesting. The cheese curds were actually curds instead of just sloppily applied shredded cheese (cringe) and were decently flavorful. ... DIY Thanksgiving decor Decorate. Set the table with these three crafty centerpiece ideas
Tip
Working with succulents
Bring in the outdoors Thanksgiving is the best holiday to forage in your yard (or your neighbor’s yard) and collect beautiful branches and pine cones to decorate your place with. The best part: It’s free! If you are lucky enough to find a big log, you can create blogger Yesterfood’s rustic centerpiece.
Repurpose Don’t spend money on items that are going to see the light of day for a few hours before getting thrown in the back of the closet until next year. Instead, get creative with old frames, vases and charming doodads laying around. first time an Indian designer has had his own shop in Paris, so it’s quite a milestone, for myself and for the Indian fashion industry as well. What was your biggest challenge when you showed during Paris Fashion Week? I was the first Indian designer to do it, so I had no one to look up to, which I considered as an advantage in the end, because I had to find my own path. We have been lucky with the press since the beginning and I feel like now, we have found the right balance between the media’s appreciation and the actual sales. So far I have been very lucky with the celebrities who found me, like Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj, because they’ve got the spirit, so you can imagine them all in these clothes — they embody them. Before Katy Perry wore my circus skirt, I did not even know who she was. It’s funny now because Madame Tussauds asked us to make the skirt for the Katy Perry statue in the Asian museums — it became such a symbol of her. ELODIE NOEL, MWN @MetroBOS
Do you like modern fashion? It’s a bit boring. These days, not in every house, but in general, fashion has become more about what people want and not about bringing your point of view to people. A designer used to create something new, take a risk and offer it to the world. Now, everything is based on sales, and that’s what makes fashion pretty sad.

Gizmos and apps for your pet
Now, your pets will never suffer from #FOMO. We review a host of devices that get your beloved animal friends connected online and outfitted with the latest health-tracking apps. WANISE MARTINEZ, MWN
TinType turns your photos — including ones of Herbie Hancock, above — into ones that look 150 years old.
Platform(s): iOS, Android Price: 99 cents
How many photo filter apps do you need? Your phone likely comes with an OK one built in; Instagram offers its own wide spectrum. If you’re looking for something more retro — ones that try really hard to look like they were snapped in the 1970s and allowed to fade and turn distressingly orange — Hipstamatic has long been your friend. It was among the first and best apps to seize upon humankind’s desire to replicate the look of the old, if for no other reason than it makes you feel more powerful than you really are. Now “Hipstamatic” has another round of filters — but, in a brilliant Machiavellian
maneuver, you’ll have to pay for an entirely different app to get them. (App companies have to make money somehow!) TinType goes super-old, with filters made to look like your photo was taken in the distant past, in the old “daguerreotype” way that captured haunting images of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson and the 1851 solar eclipse. You can turn your photos a dim black-and-white or tint them a sickly yellow. But it will take more than a filter to really capture the look of photos taken 150 years ago, when people rocked stiff poses and never, ever smiled or looked happy. But if you’re someone who gets easily bored with the photo filters you’ve already burned through, here’s another one to occupy your time.

Voyce
Our canine companions need a bit of chill-out time and the iCalmDog will help. This gadget, dubbed the “iPod for dogs,” is a portable player preloaded with four hours of classical compositions. The songs target different anxiety issues such as city sounds, aggression, a baby’s arrival and thunderstorms. Price: $79.95 to $339.95
Wouldn’t it be amazing if your pet could speak your language? “No More Woof” is a headset gadget claiming to convert canine brainwaves into English. The product was a success on crowdfunding site Indiegogo and is now in its final prototype development stages.
Voyce is like having a vet on hand at all times. This sensorbased device monitors your pet’s activity levels, heart and respiratory rates, as well as the number of calories your companion burns. All this key information syncs onto your smartphone or computer via Wi-Fi. Price: $299 plus $15/ month membership fee

Diet pills are making you fat
On the market
Since 2010, the Food and Drug Administration has approved several STOCKBYTE prescription weight-loss pills — which it emphasizes are to be used along with diet and exercise. But health concerns remain with all of them, though the agency considers the potential weight loss benefits to outweigh those risks.
Study. Though they work as intended, you’re probably using them wrong.
Contrave A combination of two drugs for addiction and depression; patients lost an average of 2 percent more weight than with a placebo.
Qsymia A combination of a short-term weight loss pill and an anti-seizure medication; patients lost 6.7-8.9 percent more weight than with placebo.
Belviq Activates serotonin receptors in the brain, which may help with feeling full after eating less food; patients lost about 3-3.7 percent more weight than with a placebo.
This Thanksgiving, don’t treat diet pills as a free pass for second or third helpings, no matter how good your grandfather’s cooking is. / FUSE
RSV infection “can present as just a little head cold, little running nose or sneezing.
It’s not one of those illnesses that gives you a high fever with flu-like symptoms,” Friedman says. There can also be wheezing, a sign of bronchiolitis.

Using weight-loss pills to kickstart your diet could be sabotaging your goals instead, according to a new study. Slimming pills have a checkered past, with several brands like the notorious FenPhen being recalled over the years for serious side effects, including deaths. But since the Food and Drug Administration started regulating the market, there are now several brands on the market — though their promises are much less spectacular. Still, they could serve as a starting point for those needing a way to begin losing weight. But that wasn’t the finding of a new joint study by three universities. “Weight-management remedies that promise to reduce the risks of being overweight may undermine consumer mo-
tivation to engage in healthsupportive behaviors,” write Lisa E. Bolton (Pennsylvania State University), Amit Bhattacharjee (Dartmouth College) and Americus Reed II (University of Pennsylvania). “Put simply, why put effort into living a healthy lifestyle when a weight-management remedy can take care of the problem?” Study participants were each given free access to a bowl of chocolate cookies, with one group advised ahead of time about a new powerful fat-fighting pill. The group that believed in the existence of the new pill ate significantly more cookies per person, with some participants consuming as many as 30. These results suggest that people who most need to lose weight are also the ones most likely to dangerously increase their consumption of unhealthy foods when given an easy way to mitigate the effects of the foods they eat. ease Control. One positive finding showed that encouraging consumers to look beyond the marketing and find trustworthy information about a drug was very effective in reducing their false expectations and, therefore, preventing any unhealthy behavior. “Given the ubiquity of remedies in today’s marketplace, more research is needed to understand the impact of remedy marketing on consumers,” the authors explain. “There is ample room for policy makers and responsible marketers to improve remedy marketing practices to minimize potentially harmful consequences.” ELODIE NOEL @METROBOS

RSV. As enterovirus subsides, beware of another bug that targets children
Watch for these signs
What are the symptoms?
16
Breathing can become a big issue in RSV infections. / STOCKBYTE
The cold weather has been here for weeks, yet flu has barely made the headlines, crowded out by enterovirus. Though it usually passes as a seasonal respiratory illness without much notice, the virus has severely sickened people, mostly young children, in 47 states, killing 12. While the end of fall is also the end of peak season for enterovirus, it brings respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), the leading cause of hospitalization
for children during their first year of life, with an average of 125,000 doctor visits and as many as 200 deaths in the U.S. annually — eight times more than the flu. We asked pediatrician Dr. Deborah Friedman of Maria Ferrari Children’s Hospital about this seasonal illness and what we can expect.
1
Will it be as bad as enterorvirus? Friedman says there is no similar risk. “RSV doesn’t mutate on a year-to-year basis the same way influenza does, or enterovirus D68; it always seems to be the same sorts of strains.”
2
How is it spread? Like the cold, RSV is transmitted person-to-person through fluids like mucus. Sneeze into the crook of your elbow for maximum containment of germy phlegm.
3
What do you do once you’re sick? Like a regular cold, if the fever is mild and the sick person is still eating and drinking, just wait it out. But if the child stops drinking, that’s when a doctor should be consulted. “Secondly, if the child is really having difficulty breathing – that is breathing fast, flaring the nostrils, tugging at breathing – certainly you would bring the child in for emergency care.”
4
How to prevent it? Lots of hand-washing. And for the upcoming holidays, warn relatives that your baby may be sick, or ask them to stay home if they’re sick. For the most at-risk kids there is a monthly injectable drug called Synagis. “It’s not a vaccine, but a manufactured antibody that protects children from getting the infection.” EVA KIS
No immunity
Who is at risk? “Most children will have exposure to this virus by the time they’re 2 years old, and in most cases, it’s simply a head cold — runny nose, little or no fever, etc.,” Friedman says. “However, we do know that in those children who are at risk for RSV, serious infection can occur.” Those include babies born prematurely, with chronic lung disease or congenital heart disease. But the virus has also sickened nursing home residents, as Friedman stresses that we never develop lifelong immunity. “It can be a very serious disease, although it’s very common.”

From our all-laser, bladeless LASIK procedure – to exciting developments like our Visian Implantable lens - our commitment to leading edge technology is surpassed only by our dedication to personalized patient care. Patients of New England Eye Center find confidence in knowing we offer experience you can trust and technology you can rely on. NASA-Approved LASIK - Our all-laser, bladeless LASIK at New England Eye Center has greatly improved results and helped take the fear out of having LASIK. The vast majority of our LASIK and PRK patients now achieve 20/20 vision at distance without glasses or contact lenses. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots. Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lens-like device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time. Refractive Lens Exchange - If you’re frustrated with reading glasses and bifocals, our refractive specialists perform a procedure known as Refractive Lens Exchange. By replacing your eye’s aging natural lens with a Intraocular Lens Implant customized specifically for your visual needs - and your lifestyle - allowing you to see better, look younger and never have to worry about developing cataracts! Laser Cataract Surgery - For seniors experiencing changes in their vision – or who have been diagnosed with a cataract – New England Eye Center is turning the dream of Laser Cataract Surgery into reality. We are currently among only the top 3% of practices in the country to offer patients the added precision and accuracy of Laser Cataract Surgery using OptiMedica® Catalys™ Precision Laser System. This year, take your vision to the NEXT LEVEL by giving yourself or a loved one the Gift of Sight. Now that’s a Gift that keeps on Giving. A blessed New Year from the surgeons and staff of New England Eye Center.

Why quit smoking?
Dana-Farber expert offers tips for kicking the habit November is lung cancer awareness month and the Great American Smokeout is November 20th. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute says there is never a bad time to stop smoking, but if you want to take the step toward a healthier life, there’s no time like the present. Dana-Farber experts say the most important thing you can do to avoid lung cancer is to never start smoking. And if you do smoke, it’s never too late to quit. According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the most preventable form of cancer in the world but it is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States for both men and women. ACS estimates that there will be over 200,000 new cases diagnosed this year.
Quitting smoking lowers a person’s risk of lung cancer, as well as other cancers, heart attack, stroke, and chronic lung diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. People can lower their risk of a heart attack or stroke within a few weeks of quitting. Johnson says those who quit smoking and remain a nonsmoker for ďŹ ve to 10 years can cut their risk of cancer in half compared to a person who keeps smoking. Even smokers who quit after age 50 can reduce their risk of dying early.
s ! COUGH THAT WILL NOT GO AWAY OVER SEVERAL weeks. Smokers may see a change in the frequency or severity of an already persistent cough; s Shortness of breath; s Chest, shoulder, or back pain that doesn’t go away and is made worse by deep breathing; s Increased wheezing;
Lung cancer risk factors Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer in the U.S., and causes more deaths each year than colon, breast, and prostate cancer combined according to the American Cancer Society. Although smoking is by far the largest risk factor for lung cancer, non-smokers can also develop the disease. Twenty percent of women and 10 percent of men who develop lung cancer never smoked. Environmental risk factors, such as second-hand smoke, radon, or certain industrial chemicals, can increase a person’s risk of developing lung cancer.
Lung cancer warning signs Lung cancer shares many symptoms with other diseases like a cold or the u. So Johnson encourages people, especially smokers, to see their physicians if they experience any of the following:
s "LOODY #OUGHS )F SOMEONE COUGHS UP blood, they should seek medical attention right away.
Ready to quit smoking When someone is ready to quit, the ďŹ rst things Dana-Farber recommends they do would be to pick a date and seek the help of family, friends or professional counselors.
Other tips Choose a method, such as s #HANGING OUT CIGARETTES FOR NICOTINE replacement products s 'RADUAL WITHDRAWAL s !NTI DEPRESSANTS
Avoid triggers s 'ET RID OF CIGARETTES LIGHTERS MATCHES AND ashtrays s 'O FOR A WALK EXERCISE CAN DECREASE cravings Follow the Four “Dsâ€? s Deep breaths s Drink lots of water s Do something to avoid focusing on cigarette cravings s Delay reaching for a cigarette - the urge will pass On average it takes at least three attempts to quit and stay tobacco-free. So for people who have previously tried to quit and went back to smoking, it’s important to pick another date AND TRY AGAIN "UT DON T GIVE UP 2EMEMBER IT S never too late to quit. by the Simpson-Mazzoli Act which was intended to “reform” our immigration system. Now there are approximately 11 million illegals and I am again hearing that amnesty will help correct immigration issues? Isn’t the height of foolishness to repeat the same failed action and expect a different result? If “amnesty” is unfortunately granted, what mechanism will be in place to ensure that these former criminals will assimilate into our country? Will they have to learn fluent English as demonstrated by getting a GED diploma and passing a language test? Will

An arbitrator ruled Tuesday that the NFL can keep Vikings running back Adrian Peterson on the commissioner’s exempt list, which almost certainly rules out any chance that he will play again this season.

Packers (7-3)
Lions (7-3)
Ravens (6-4)
The Packers offense is great. We all know that. But give the Green Bay defense a hand. It forced four Philadelphia turnovers Sunday and made Chip Kelly’s high-flying offense look pedestrian.
According to Patspulpit .com, Matthew Stafford is 0-15 on the road against winning teams. Unfortunately for Stafford, he will be on the road this weekend against the winningest team of the 2000s.
Remember when Steve Smith Sr. looked like Steve Smith Jr. earlier this season? Well, he hasn’t had more than 70 yards receiving in over a month and hasn’t found the end zone in over a month.

Both the Pats and Cardinals have won six games in a row, but there’s little doubt as to which team has been more impressive since Oct. 1. Tom Brady had a relatively bad outing in Indy on Sunday, and the Pats still hung 42 points on the Colts. Jonas Gray won’t likely be flirting with 200 yards rushing in a single game again, but does it really matter? The Pats always adjust. No. 2

Chiefs (7-3)
Cowboys (7-3)
Colts (6-4)
Only the Pats and Cards have won more games in a row than the Chiefs. Kansas City does more with less as Alex Smith hasn’t thrown for more than 225 yards during the Chiefs five-game win streak.
The Cowboys are in the opposite boat that the Eagles, Broncos and Lions find themselves in. They’re a perfect 4-0 away from the Jerry Dome. That number should improve as Dallas takes on the Giants.
Few teams have corners like Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner to throw at T.Y. Hilton and Reggie Wayne, but the Pats laid out a good blueprint for the rest of the league to follow when it comes to the Colts.

The Birds will head back home this Sunday and will have a cushy game against the Titans waiting for them. The Eagles are undefeated at “The Linc” this season but are just 2-3 on the road.
This is simply a positive what-have-you-done-for-melately deal as no one would be shocked if Cincy loses this Sunday at Houston. Cincy is fresh off a road win at New Orleans.
Doesn’t it feel like the Seahawks’ record should be 3-7 right about now? They better get their act together quick as they face the Cardinals, 49ers and Eagles in a row coming up.

Broncos (7-3)
49ers (6-4)
Dolphins (6-4)
Wide receiver Michael Floyd had been struggling over the last month. While he only had two catches against the Lions, both of them went for touchdowns.
The Broncos just wrapped up a three-game road trip, and on that journey they had a pair of flat tires, getting blown out against the Pats and scoring just seven points at St. Louis.
The 49ers’ wins over the Eagles and Chiefs in Weeks 4 and 5 look mighty good right about now. And their loss to the Rams in Week 9 doesn’t look so bad anymore.
Dan Marino would have sold his right arm to have a defense like the one Miami employs right now. The Dolphins have given up an average of 11.2 points the past five weeks.

C’s feel pressure late in games The Celtics aren’t good enough to play anything less than a 48-minute game. But lately they’ve been giving up leads — big leads — and failing to close out games. On Friday against LeBron James and Co., Boston was down a point with seven seconds left on the clock. Out of a timeout, Rajon Rondo proceeded to run out the clock as he didn’t get a shot off before the buzzer sounded. On Monday, it was just about more of the same. Boston — down four points to Phoenix — had ball with 19.8 seconds remaining in the game. They had a timeout left, but Brad Stevens was hoping for a quick basket and a foul - then he’d use his timeout after the Suns free throws to advance the ball. The problem? Boston didn’t get an actual shot off until 2.6 seconds left on the clock when Rondo was fouled taking a desperation 3-pointer. Give the Suns credit for solid perimeter defense down the stretch, but if you’re the Celtics you have to get a shot off much earlier in that situation. Oh, Rondo missed all three free throws, too.
