Democrats would convene at the Barclays Center if Brooklyn is chosen to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention. / GETTY IMAGES
Brooklyn finalist for ’16 Democratic convention Politics. Convention may create jobs, boost tourism, cause traffic jams.
Brooklyn may be the place to be for the DNC. The borough was named a finalist for the 2016 Democratic National Convention, along with Philadelphia and Columbus, Ohio, by the Democratic National Committee on Monday. Phoenix and Birmingham, Alabama, were dropped from the running. “This is a good day for New York City, we are thrilled by the news,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday afternoon, after the announcement. Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, home to the Brooklyn Nets, would host the
convention. De Blasio, a Brooklyn resident before he moved to Gracie Mansion, said the DNC recognized that New York is “a city moving in the right direction” toward inclusivity, and said Brooklyn’s story, from “underdog” to “envy of the world,” can inspire the rest of the country. “This is probably the greatest thing that can happen to Brooklyn right now, in terms of businesses and growth,” said Carlo Scissura, president and CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. “For business owners, it will make their year. It’s not just the four or five days of the convention, but the year leading up to it — the buzz.” Scissura said he had “zero concerns” about the logistics of moving thousands of people into the borough. He noted
Visit Metro.us to find out more about the DNC’s 2016 plans. that major subway lines connect to the Barclays Center. “From the Bronx, to Queens, you can get to downtown Brooklyn,” Scissura said. “One of the downsides of having it in Brooklyn deals with the costs and limitations of hotel space and hotel scarcity in Brooklyn,” said Daniel DiSalvo, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research. “There isn’t big hotel space around the conven-
tion center to support this,” DiSalvo said. A convention in New York could “bring de Blasio into the national spotlight,” as well as his populist views. Last week, the de Blasio administration said $10 million of $100 million needed to bring the convention to Barclays Center had been raised from 101 host committee members. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams said Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter ending his term in January 2016, gives Brooklyn an even better chance. “The DNC wants a stable commitment and agreement moving forward, and we are excited about the possibility,” Adams said. The 2016 DNC will take place the week of July 18, July 25 or Aug. 22. Lucas Vazquez contributed to this report.
By the numbers
Conventions shine a spotlight on the host city. They also come at a cost. Here’s what the Democrats and their hosts paid to put on the last four confabs: •
2000: Los Angeles $84 Million
•
2004: Boston $95 Million
•
2008: Denver $54 Million
•
2012: Charlotte $55 Million

Race. Giuliani: I saved more black lives than any other mayor in history of New York City
Giuliani / GETTY IMAGES
Former mayor Rudy Giuliani said today that he’d “probably saved more black lives as mayor of New York City than any mayor in the history of the city,” with possible exception of his successor Michael Bloomberg. Appearing on “Fox &
Friends” on Monday morning, Giuliani pointed to the drop in crime under his administration, as he defended his earlier remarks about the shooting of unarmed African-American teen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. On NBC’s “Meet The
Press” on Sunday, Giuliani said that white police officers wouldn’t need to be in the Missouri town if black people “weren’t killing each other.” “Up until the time I became mayor, thousands of blacks were being killed every single year [in New
York],” Giuliani said. “I find it very disappointing that you’re not discussing the fact that 93 percent of blacks in America are killed by other blacks,” he said. “We’re talking about the exception here.” BLOOMBERG

Bratton: NYPD has lost trust of community Police. NYPD Commissioner William Bratton says he’ll “fix the system,” and regain New Yorkers’ trust in police. Police Commissioner William Bratton conceded the NYPD has “lost the trust of so much of the community,” in a speech at New York University on Monday. Bratton told a law school audience that “we’re going to correct the system before you graduate.” First-year law students will complete their studies in 2017. New York’s controversial stop-and-frisk policy, which is being monitored by a federal judge, and which was scaled back by Mayor Bill De Blasio, is “essential to American democratic policing,” Bratton said, according to remarks reported by the New York Observer. The commissioner’s comments came after a weekend of violence in New York that critics said revealed faults in the NYPD. On Saturday, an 18-month NYPD veteran accidentally shot and killed an unarmed man in the darkened stairwell of a Brooklyn housing project.

“I am not calling for peace and calm. I’m calling for us to rise up and for us to demand justice.” Assemblyman-elect Charles Barron
Over the weekend, a video emerged showing a policeman clubbing a 20-year old man he was trying to arrest for farebeating at a Brooklyn subway stop. Bratton spoke shortly before a grand jury in Ferguson, Missouri, declined to indict a white police officer who shot and killed unarmed black teen Michael Brown. Protestors outside the hall called for Bratton to resign, and chanted “Bratton must go.” “Since Bratton won’t come out and face the communities affected by his policies — we’ll bring the community to him,” Josmar Trujillo, a spokes-
man for New Yorkers Against Bratton, wrote in an e-mail before the speech. “We’ll fight until we ‘push harder,’ until we push he and his broken policies out of New York.” Bratton told his audience the NYPD is “probably the most restrained police department” in the U.S. Speaking about the subway beating, Bratton said people have “no right to resist arrest.” The NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating both the housing project shooting and the subway beating. Monday. Pedro Hernandez, who confessed to police in 2012 that he had choked Patz
and stued him alive in a garbage bag in 1979, has been charged with murder. Hernandez, a New Jersey man who at the time of the boy’s disappearance worked at a deli in his Soho neighborhood, no longer admits to the crime, said his lawyer, Harvey Fishbein. Patz’s body was never found, but he was legally declared dead in 2001. In a police interview
taped during more than seven hours of interrogation, Hernandez said he lured Patz with a cold soda into the basement of the deli where he worked. “I think anyone who sees these confessions will understand that when the police were ďŹ nished, Mr. Hernandez believed he killed Etan Patz, but that doesn’t mean he actually did,â€? Fishbein said. REUTERS

‘Casablanca’ piano sells for $3.4M Movies. The piano on which Dooley Wilson played for Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart sells at auction. “Sell it, Sam. The iconic piano from the 1942 movie “Casablanca sold for $3.4 million Monday in a sale of Hollywood memorabilia at Bonham’s auction house on Madison Avenue. More than 30 items from the iconic film went under the hammer, along with items from “The Wizard of Oz and “To Kill a Mockingbird. The centerpiece of the Casablanca collection, was the 58-key salmon-colored piano from Rick’s Cafe Americain, on which Dooley Wilson sang and played “As Time Goes By for Ingrid Bergman, as Humphrey Bogart watched.
The piano had been in private hands since 1980. Bidding opened at $1.6 million and was over in minutes. The winning bid was placed by telephone and the bidder was not revealed. “Whoever could afford to buy this, it’s terrific. I didn’t expect that it would start at such a high price, but I’m pleased because it is something so important to film history, said Marianne Simmons, 56, who watched the auction, but didn’t bid. “I think the Casablanca piano should really be in the Smithsonian. I hope the buyer will donate it. It should be somewhere for people to see, said Todd Fireton, who also watched the sale. Touche Howard, 53, bought Bogart’s black tuxedo for his collection. Crowds break barricades, march after announcement After a grand jury in Ferguson, Missouri, declined to indict Police Officer Darren Wilson for the shooting death of Michael Brown last August, protesters in Union Square broke police barriers and marched down
University Place toward Washington Square Park. “There’s no indictment, they let him go!” People in the crowd yelled shortly after the decision was announced at 9:30 p.m. The death of the unarmed 18-year-old has sparked weeks of protests in Missouri and across the country. A few hundred protesters went to Union Square
Protestors in Union Square Park AARON ADLER, METRO
in the early evening after hearing the grand jury had reached a decision. The NYPD set up barricades along the northern part of the park, and officers swarmed the surrounding area. As they waited, the protesters chanted “Killer cops have got to go.” “Things are not changing,” said Marvin Knight, 71. “In 1964 there was a riot
and I was in it, that was 50 years ago,” Knight said. On July 16, 1964, the shooting of 15-year old James Powell by police Lieutenant Thomas Gilligan set off a week of racially charged riots in Harlem and BedfordStuyvesant. “Nine times out of 10, they’re going to be exonerated,” Knight said. Don Lash, who’s been a member of the International Socialist Organization
for four years, said he hopes more people will realize police-involved shootings are not local incidents, but part of a “sustained movement.” Lash, 49, said he’s been following cases involving police violence and militarization since the time Amadou Diallo was shot by four officers in the Bronx in 1999. Decision. Grand jury declines to bring murder charges against Darren Wilson. A white Missouri police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black teenager avoided indictment by a state grand jury, raising concerns of a return to rioting that engulfed the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson after the August shooting. Protestors in Ferguson damaged several police cars before they were dispersed with tear gas last night. Gov. Jay Nixon urged “people on all sides show tolerance, mutual respect and restraint.”
The grand jury, composed of nine whites and three blacks, declined to charge Darren Wilson, 28, for the Aug. 9 killing of Michael Brown, 18, in a street encounter, St. Louis County Chief Prosecutor Robert P. McCulloch announced Monday. The panel began hearing evidence Aug. 20 after days of protests triggered a police response that was criticized as militaristic, and which rekindled a national debate on race and law enforcement. Some eyewitnesses said Brown was shot as he raised his hands in surrender. Police said he attacked Wilson while the officer was in his patrol car. The federal government is examining the Ferguson Police Department. BLOOMBERG

Hagel resigns as defense secretary Source. Hagel privately expressed frustration to colleagues at the administration’s Iraq and Syria strategies. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel resigned on Monday, leaving under pressure as President Barack Obama faces critical national security challenges, including fighting Islamic State in Iraq and Syria and revising plans to exit Afghanistan. It was the first major change to Obama’s Cabinet since Democrats were routed in midterm elections three weeks ago, and Republicans, who took over the Senate and now control both houses of Congress, are looking to bring changes. Hagel was appointed
less than two years ago as Obama pushed his signature program of winding down wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, a process now being upended with U.S. re-engagement in Iraq and greater military cooperation with Kabul. Officials said publicly the decision was mutual but privately others said he had been forced out. He raised questions about Obama’s strategy toward Syria in a two-page internal policy memo that leaked this fall in which he warned that Obama’s policy was in jeopardy due to its failure to clarify its intentions toward Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Obama has insisted the United States can go after Islamic State militants without addressing Assad, who the United States would like to leave power. REUTERS

Oil prices could fall to $60 a barrel Oil. Prices have been falling since the summer due to abundant supply. Some commodity fund managers believe oil prices could slide to $60 per barrel if OPEC does not agree to a significant output cut when it meets in Vienna this week. Brent crude futures LCOc1 have fallen by a third since June, touching a four-year low of $76.76 a barrel on Nov. 14. They could tumble further if OPEC does not agree to cut at least one million barrels per day, according
U.S. shale oil / GETTY IMAGES
to some commodity fund managers’ forecasts. That could send Brent down to around $60, said Daniel Bathe, of Lupus Alpha Commodity Invest Fund. “Herding behavior and a shift to net negative speculative positions should accelerate the price plunge,” he said.
Quoted
“The market would question the credibility of OPEC and its influence on global oil markets if there was no cut.” Bathe
Yet fund managers and brokerage analysts are divided over whether OPEC will reach an agreement on cutting output. Bathe put the likelihood at no more than 50 percent. The abundant supply is partly from U.S. shale oil and because of low demand growth, particularly in Europe and Asia. As a result, some investors believe a small cut of around 500,000 bpd would not be enough to calm the markets. With member states struggling to balance budgets, many OPEC countries will be pushing for an output cut when OPEC meets in Vienna on Nov. 27. “Prices below $80 are putting significant strain on the cartel’s weakest members such as Venezuela,” said Nicolas Robin, a commodities fund manager at Threadneedle. Gov. Cuomo warns Buffalo area of roof collapse risks Prepared. Thousands of sandbags are in place around the city, said Erie County spokesman Peter Anderson. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned residents of Buffalo, New York, which is still digging out from as much as seven feet of snow, to beware of roof collapses as the weather warms. With temperatures expected to reach 59 degrees, the region faced a high risk of floods as the snow melts, though so far has escaped major flooding, Cuomo said Monday. He warned people to look for signs of their

roofs weakening under the heavy weight of the snow, noting that noises were a warning sign of a possible collapse. The region was braced for high winds and downed trees on Monday
afternoon, with the National Weather Service warning that winds would blow at 25 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts up to 60 mph. The waterlogged ground made it more likely that trees would fall, raising the risk that homes and businesses would lose power. Larry Miceli, 59, was busy on Monday putting sandbags around his home, located in a low-lying area not far from a creek. “If the creek goes over its banks, the water will eventually run to where I am,” Miceli said. He said the storm marked the third time this year his house has been at risk of flooding. “Sometimes you wonder how much you can take. It just keeps coming,” said Miceli. “It doesn’t seem right.” REUTERS

Crucial year-end stock market trends Being a successful stock trader is not just about making good stock picks; you have to know the underlying trends. Here are three year-end trends that are happening now that you should keep in mind.
Trend 1: Tax loss selling Because you’re allowed to deduct your stock market losses from your annual income, thus paying less in taxes, investors sell their worst performing stocks into the year-end in order to utilize those tax losses for the current year. If you have losses now and wait to sell any time in early
2015, you can’t use those tax losses until you pay next year’s taxes. This opens the door to some supreme value deals on stocks that are oversold not due to anything the companies did but due to tax reasons only.
Trend 2: The January effect This is the important-toknow seasonality trend where beaten-down stocks often bounce and rebound sharply in January as there’s no more tax loss selling to keep the stock prices low. Stocks trading between $1 to $5 per share that have been hammered over the

the Super Bowl
The NFL has confirmed rumors that Katy Perry will be performing at the next Super Bowl halftime show, taking place Feb. 1 in Glendale, Arizona. Perry got in on the announcement action with a video discussing various ideas for the show in her “testing facility,” including kittens and edible glitter. After recent years featuring Madonna and Beyonce, it will be interesting to see what Perry can bring to the ridiculously highprofile gig — and what Illuminati references conspiracy theorists can glean from it. Tour director Baz Halpin is really risking the ire of Taylor Swift by working with Perry on the show. I’m thinking he maybe didn’t take Swift’s alleged threat too seriously. Also, way to go on Perry’s part for managing to steal plenty of focus during the American Music Awards despite not actually being there. She didn’t even need glitter for that move.

Lisa Bonet not tweeting about Bill Cosby — or on Twitter at all Amid the frenzy regarding Bill Cosby and the growing number of women accusing him of sexual assault over the years, the Internet is hungry for commentary by anyone who has worked with him. Perhaps it’s a little too hungry, as it turns out, because everyone was a little too quick to believe former “Cosby Show” star Lisa Bonet was tweeting about her old boss. “According to the karma of past actions, one’s destiny unfolds, even though everyone wants to be so lucky,” a tweet from an account claiming to be Bonet’s read. “Nothing stays in the dark [forever].” Here’s the thing, though: Bonet isn’t actually on Twitter. “Lisa Bonet has no

Q&A BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH IS PLAYING THE ‘GAME’ TO WIN Interview. The actor wants you to know about the hero he plays in the WWII drama “The Imitation Game.”
BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH WIREIMAGE
When Benedict Cumberbatch signed on to play WWII code breaker and computer pioneer Alan Turing in “The Imitation Game,” he became pretty darn enamored with the man. And he thinks you

should be, too. So here is why Cumberbatch thinks Turing is such “an extraordinary, extraordinary, extraordinary human being” — and why the film, which chronicles how the tide of war turned, deserves your attention. He made great things out of great suffering “All of the worst moments in his life led to achievements. Being ostracized from a group made him think about isolating work. Not understanding how to communicate because so much of what he had to deal with in his life had to do with secrets made him
an expert cryptographer. The idea of clandestine, repressed coding and analyzing that language was just completely borne out of his circumstance.” His humorlessness can be funny “It should be funny — and sometimes unintentionally on his part. It’s him missing the point, or not missing the point but everyone else using lazy language and him thinking they mean literally what they mean. I don’t think he was always trying to be a pedant. I think he genuinely did think in a very literal way, hence his discoveries.”
Spoiler alert
It didn’t end well for him “I think it definitely was, without a doubt, suicide. He ended his life,” Cumberbatch says of Turing’s demise. Turing was convicted of “homosexual acts” in 1952 and punished with chemical castration. “The doctor got embarrassed about giving him [estrogen] injections so he put an implant in his hip, and it went on operating after the two-year sentence had finished. And he carved it
out with a carving knife — he literally cut into his leg. This extraordinary mathematician and war hero cut into his own leg to try to stop it. And the desperation of that leads me to believe there was absolutely no way that it was anything other than suicide, conspiracy theories be damned.” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

Taking a stand on Joe Paterno Interview. Director Amir Bar-Lev explores the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky mega-scandal in “Happy Valley.â€? Documentarian Amir BarLev (“The Tillman Storyâ€?) knew nothing about the Penn State Nittany Lions before the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal broke. He didn’t go right in with his cameras as the university, and the town of State College, exploded, especially after the firing of longtime head coach Joe Paterno led to protests. Instead Bar-Lev waited a year to let the dust settle, then went in to take the temperature of the situation, as well as the school. What drew you to this story speciďŹ cally? The way I cast my docu-
mentary subjects is that I look for mystery. And the mystery of Joe Paterno is a great subject for a film — just the idea that a guy could represent what Joe Paterno did for as long as he did, and at the same time have made this grave mistake toward the end of his life. The challenge is that there a lot of people who think they have answers — those who think he was a phony all along, or those who reject any suggestion that he made any kind of mistake. But I think those two poles are incorrect. There’s a more mysterious and compelling center of ground to be taken on Joe Paterno. You include a lot of diverse
For the victims
The family Matt Sandusky, Jerry Sandusky’s adopted son, wound up being a late addition to the movie. Matt Sandusky is the moral center of the ďŹ lm. His story is unique but also representative of the other victims. We did have early cuts without him, but I can’t imagine the ďŹ lm without him at this point. He’s such an eloquent and understated spokesperson for the victims. The fact that he initially covered for Jerry and lied on his behalf speaks volumes about how these crimes are committed and why they sometimes take so long to get reported.

voices in this ďŹ lm. I don’t like it when people say it’s a film that is objective and that simply lets every position be heard. That’s not at all what I was trying to do. The film is subjective; it has a position. I just don’t like to hammer people over the head with it. I want to get it across, but I think
the best way to do that is to present it in such a way that my audience arrives at their conclusions on their two feet. It’s that old chestnut about teaching a man to fish: If I just serve you the fish, you’d have that one meal, but I’m trying to teach you how to fish by taking you on the journey I went on.

Dear holidays: I hate you. Love, Charles

I know how that headline sounds. The truth is, my thoughts on the holidays are not so finite and rooted in hatred. And I’m not talking about the consumerist or the religious aspects of the holiday season. No matter what your religious beliefs, here’s an important update: It’s the day after Thanksgiving and as irony would have it, the Holiday Season has begun. One of the most popular celebrations is the consumer-driven holiday known as Christmas. Add this to the fact that the religious meaning behind Christmas is the celebration of the birth of the Christian savior (even though religious scholars believe he was born in September — wait, no — sometime in the spring, wait, umm). This all, of course, ignores the fact that the original celebration is rooted in pagan traditions of the winter solstice. First, please allow me to freely admit that I actually love the holiday season. And by that, I mean what it stands for: the spirit of

the holidays, reconnecting with friends and family, and giving. Although filled with joy and music and gift giving, the holiday season sends many-a-chill down many-a-person’s spine. Why? Because the pressure
can be enormous, both externally and internally, for a multitude of reasons. Here are just a few: • Seeing the in-laws: Pressure mounts to say, do and wear the right things. The silent judgment can be deafening on both sides of this relationship. • Family you usually don’t see often bring a host of social dynamics that many don’t want to deal with, even for a short visit. If you haven’t seen them or spoken to them since the last family get-together, chances are there is either no connection or lots of tension. And two of the worst (and related) issues for couples: • Unspoken expectations: If you don’t tell him or her what you want/expect during this time (not just with gifts but with family relations, time management, events, to-do lists, finances, etc.), you will create tension where their was none—simply because nothing was said. • How they receive love:
For exclusive commentary, c visit Metro.us/blogs. We’re told early on to treat others the way we want to be treated, but that doesn’t always work. People receive and recognize love in different ways. One person values time, so they might want (or expect) to spend time that holiday season. Perhaps they have a vacation or some focused, quality time alone as their core need. That’s how they recognize and receive love, so they plan that and give that to their significant other. However, the other person values effort and wants to receive something homemade or to be “valued enough” that their wants/needs were paid attention to all year. That’s how they give love. These two people are treating the other as they want to be treated, yet neither will feel that they other cared enough to love them how they want and deserve. Bottom line: Remember that people don’t receive love exactly the way you do. Just a few weeks to go. You’ll find me waiting for Saint Nick not with cookies —with tequila.

of breaks my heart. The author says that traveling with and getting to know each of the 10 sisters she profiles in the book taught her just how misunderstood and stereotyped nuns were, by both the Catholic community and the general population. “I’m a very healthy and openminded agnostic, says Piazza, who attended Catholic schools growing up. “I think I love the nuns so much because they don’t wear their religion on their sleeves, they just practice it. Piazza shared some of the other things she learned while writing the book with Metro.
Nuns are not meek When you think of a Catholic nun, you
Nuns love a certain Comedy Central star “Nuns love Stephen Colbert, dishes Piazza, which should be no surprise as the late-night host is well known for teaching Sunday school at his local church. Other things the nuns raved to Piazza about are red wine, cats and baseball.
probably don’t picture a woman who volunteers as an abortion clinic escort or a woman in jail for protesting against nuclear weapons. But those are just two examples of women Piazza met with while writing her book. “These are the women who are the very first feminists, says
Piazza. “They were running colleges, they were running hospitals. They have amazing careers.
Nuns are not just teachers Piazza says she hears all the time from former Catholic school students who complain about the times they were hit with rulers in class. “It’s mostly men that say that, too. And then I just say, ‘Did you deserve it? You probably were a little jerk, weren’t you?’ she says. “That’s one of the myths about nuns that people like to say. And it’s not true; it’s a stereotype. All of the nuns I know are just loving, dynamic women. LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi lakshmi.gandhi@metro.us

BLACK FRIDAY
Deal or no deal? Retail. What to resist on Black Friday and how to shop smarter this year. There’s no doubt that Black Friday is brimming with bargains and steals. But put on your earmuffs, hardcore devotees, because an ugly truth lies ahead: Sometimes the hype is just hype, and retailers will roll out their best prices — and better quality products — later in December. Did we just rekill Santa for you? Please accept our sincere apologies, and read on for expert tips on what to wait on this weekend.
Avoid lines
Toys A quick disclaimer: If anything “Frozen” is on your kiddo’s list, you should probably buy that right away (or, you know, last week). But for toys that aren’t in such high demand, hold off. “We’ve been collecting data on Black Friday for 10
One of the bad ones is toys — Black Friday and Cyber Monday are not the best prices for toys.” When to buy: According to James, the two weeks leading up to Christmas is when you see the really big price cuts.
Smaller names, bigger deals Traditional Black Friday heavyweights such as Macy’s, Best Buy and Walmart are going to be packed, no doubt. For great deals without the lines, James suggests putting lower-key retailers such as Sears, JCPenney and Kohl’s at the top of your list.

after Christmas, advises Kristen Nelson of RetailMeNot.com, a discount junkie’s dream site. “The post-Christmas sales are really, really good,” she says. “They’re waiting for people to come back to return items and coming back with gift cards.”
Next, please. As free shipping becomes the norm and retailers feel the pressure from competitors, don’t pay those fees without looking for a deal first. “It’s become expected for retailers to offer free shipping at this point,” says Nelson. “Look for a free shipping offer — it’s definitely out there if you just take a minute.” (Sites such as RetailMeNot and Rather-Be-Shopping compile special codes and offers for you.)

When to buy: “If you’re looking for a high-quality TV, there are much better deals in January and early February when the new models come out and the older ones go on sale,” says James. PHOTODISC

Make holiday travel as painless as possible by being prepared. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
Tips for surviving Thanksgiving travel
The exhaustion, the hopelessness, the endless gate change announcements — travelling over the holidays is not for the faint of heart. To help you get through it, heed these pointers from Jeanenne Tornatore, a senior editor at Orbitz. Just remember, an enormous quantity of food awaits you on the other end of your trip. You can do this!
Punctuality pays
Sure, we’ve all played fast and loose with that whole “get there two hours early” rule, but Thanksgiving is not the time for those kinds of shenanigans. “The TSA is great at what they do, but the lines are just going to be longer and maybe a little bit slower the day before the holiday,” says Tornatore. She also points out that this is a time of year when people who don’t travel often are flying. So even if you can shed your shoes and laptop in five seconds flat for the security checkpoint, less-savvy fellow travelers will probably be slower.
Prepare like a Boy Scout Step one: Print out your boarding pass at home. Showing up with your boarding pass in hand will save you from the crowds huddled around those little kiosks. Tornatore also recommends looking online ahead of time to learn where things are in the airport. “It’s always good to know what’s available, whether you’re trying to entertain your kids or you’re going to be there over mealtime and you’re looking for something to eat.”
Be a power packer Let’s be honest: The chances of delays are high this time of year. “Make sure to pack any necessities that you would really need in a 24-hour period in a carry-on bag: things like phone chargers, contact solution and case, any medications, stuff that you would need for your kids,” advises Tornatore. You’ll be glad you did if you get stranded or delayed. The airport is just the sort of place where it’s OK to give up on wearing your contacts for once. Embrace looking like you stayed home sick!
Gain the edge And for that worst moment of all, when a flight cancellation occurs? Have your airline’s number stored in your phone. Everyone at your gate is going to bolt for the service desk to try to rebook. “You walk over with them, but you get on the phone and dial that number because you might get somebody quicker on the phone that can actually get you one of the few seats left on the flights for that day,” says Tornatore. Victory (and pumpkin pie) will soon be yours!
5 1 23 4 Charge it up
Pack extra chargers, especially if you have kids: You don’t want any fights over devices, and having dead batteries is a recipe for disaster. Tornatore also suggests using apps to keep on top of itinerary changes. “I think your smartphone really becomes your lifeline when you have delays and cancellations,” she says.

Even at 8 years old, these kids are buying music — at least with their parents’ credit cards. Half the panel bought Taylor Swift’s new album on iTunes, which is where they get all their music. (No illegal downloading here!) Only one kid on the panel uses Spotify, and she gets pretty involved with it, making her own playlists and poking around to see what else is being offered. One of the kids has an iPod Nano, but the rest listen to their music on the family’s computer or phone.
Of the six pint-sized experts on the panel, all use a tablet on a regular basis and most have their own. A couple also have their own computers while the others use their parents.’ Rebecca, 12, already wants an upgrade. “I want a computer [for Christmas] because my computer now doesn’t work very well, she says. None of the kids are on Facebook or Twitter, although a few are on Instagram. The girls like following their favorite YouTube stars, such as Bethany Mota, but didn’t mention other celebrities they like to keep tabs on. Other than YouTube stars, the kids stick to following their friends, friends of friends and people who go to their school. How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.
Untold stories I was in tears when I sat in front of my television this past Thursday evening hearing President Barack Obama talk about his executive decision to make changes to the immigration system that has failed many in this country. I cried for the countless individuals that I have met from a young age here who have suffered from being in the shadows. I found it interesting when I read or heard others’ reactions, the voices of anger, resentment and fear regarding Obama’s immigration fairness/reform speech. People, did you even listen? As a social worker working with immigrant groups that don’t have “papers,” I hear the terrifying stories of women
being sexually harassed at work, people being emotionally abused, even physically, and wages not being paid. I sit in frustration hearing these stories, wanting to help, but all they want is for me to listen. They won’t stand up to the unfairness for fear of retaliation of losing their employment or being deported. They are hard-working and their priority is their family. It isn’t a free pass, but it’s acknowledging those that have worked hard and have been law-abiding to be free from living in the shadows. ZINAH S. ABUKHALIL-QUINONEZ, VIA EMAIL

Beckham shines in down year for Giants NFL. Giants see playoff hopes dwindle while Odell Beckham Jr. steals the spotlight. The Giants essentially had their playoff dreams dashed with Sunday night’s primetime 31-28 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. But through the dark clouds during a sixgame losing streak, a ray of light should give Big Blue and its backers some hope for the future. His name is Odell Beckham Jr. The sensational rookie receiver has been so good this year that even the Cowboys had to give respect.
Quoted
“He gives us a great spark and always seems to inject [excitement into] the sideline.” Tom Coughlin
Beckham had 146 yards on 10 receptions and added two touchdowns during his big night on Sunday. / GETTY IMAGES
“We feel particularly fortunate that he didn’t get to beat us,” said a relieved Dez Bryant. Beckham’s twisting, one-handed 43-yard
touchdown catch on the first play of the second quarter will be talked about for ages. “He’s got a gift, no doubt” said head coach
Tom Coughlin. “They’ll talk about that catch for a long time. I’ve seen him make a lot of one-handed catches, to be honest with you, but none like that where he’s falling down like that and being able to snatch the ball. And to stay in bounds while being fouled, that was quite a thing, too. … Any time a player makes a play like that, it’s an inspiration to the entire team.” Beckham’s one-handed touchdown catch down the sideline was something that’ll live forever in Giants’ lore. It may have ultimately
come in vain, but it was such a sensational reception, that even quarterback Eli Manning said it belongs “up there” with other famous receptions. “Both were pretty spectacular,” Manning said, comparing Beckham’s grab with the famous David Tyree helmet catch in Super Bowl XLII. “It was pretty spectacular to see his adjustment to the ball and get one hand up there while getting interfered with.” TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8

MLB. Red Sox make splash with signings, could tip scale in AL East It’s difficult to say that any MLB franchise coming off a 71-win season is “loaded” in certain key areas, but the Red Sox currently have too many chefs in their positional kitchen. Boston reportedly agreed to deals with free agent third baseman Pablo Sandoval and free agent infielder Hanley Ramirez on Monday. While it’s a sure thing that Sandoval will stay put at third base, the Sox may opt to move Ramirez to the outfield. The former prized Red Sox farmhand has primarily played shortstop in his career with the Marlins and Dodgers. Boston could also opt to trade current shortstop Xander Bogaerts. One way or another, the Red Sox will have to move on from someone who occupied a spot on the left side of their infield or a spot in the outfield. Rusney Castillo, Yoenis Cespedes, Shane Victorino, Mookie Betts and Allen Craig are all candidates for outfield spots next season. There have been whispers earlier this offseason that
Ramirez hit .283 and had a .369 OBP last season in L.A. / GETTY IMAGES
the Sox could move on from Cespedes after employing him for just four months. Cespedes belted 22 homers and drove in 100 runs in 152 games split between Oakland and Boston this past season. Not only do the signings of Sandoval and Ramirez mean that the Sox now have less money to throw at Jon Lester, there is the possibility that Lester will be turned off by the moves. A 2010 USA Today piece titled “Jon Lester either hates pizza or dislikes Hanley Ramirez” quoted
Lester as saying that he doesn’t plan on dining with Ramirez anytime soon. Lester was asked by a reporter if he had ever gone out for pizza with Ramirez in the minor leagues when they were teammates, and the lefty gave a curious answer. “I’d have a better chance of being struck by lightning than me and him getting a slice of pizza together,” Lester told USA Today. “You can take that for what it’s worth. But there was no chance on God’s green earth that I was getting a pizza with him.” MATT BURKE

That big sigh of relief you’re hearing is from the Warriors after hearing Andrew Bogut’s orbital contusion is not serious after a CT scan on his face.
It’s troubling to see Dwight Howard miss games so early in the season. The Rockets could use Omer Asik right about now.
Make it a league-best seven straight wins for the Blazers. With Philly on tap for Monday, that’ll be eight straight. Their bench is oh-so-strong.
A strained hamstring has kept Dwyane Wade out of the Heat’s last six games. They’ve gone 3-3 in those games, so getting him back is crucial.

They haven’t cooled o yet, and there’s no reason to believe they will. This Raptors team is third in points per game and ďŹ fth in points allowed.
Considered by many to be one of the most improved teams in basketball, the Mavs ripped o six straight before falling to the Howard-less Rockets.
It looks like Derrick Rose is going to be a gametime decision for the rest of his career. Jimmy Butler, on the other hand, is shining.
A disappointing bunch so far, as a championship should really be on the minds of everybody on this team. Doc Rivers’ defense is not up to snu.
Kings fans are just happy they have ownership that cares about winning. They’re not a playo team yet, but they’re headed in the right direction.

Holding opponents to a league-best 91.3 points per game. Just two players on the Spurs average 30 minutes per game.
There are few teams beginning to split from the pack in the East but the Wizards are certainly one of them.
The Suns have four legit guards in Goran Dragic, Eric Bledsoe, Isaiah Thomas and Gerald Green. An exciting team, for sure.
The Cavs just aren’t ready to win as a team. They’ve lost four straight, including two big ones to the Wizards and Raptors.
One of the surprise teams early, the young Bucks had some momentum going before they ran into the Raptors and Wizards.
