A man who recently returned from Liberia was diagnosed with malaria at Massachusetts General. He tested negative for Ebola. / DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN

Man at MGH tests positive for malaria Disease. A man who recently traveled to Boston from Liberia has malaria. Doctors have not definitively ruled out Ebola. A man admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital on Tuesday on suspicion that he was infected with Ebola has initially tested negative for the disease, though the hospital on Wednesday announced he has tested positive for malaria. It is too early for health officials to definitively say whether the man is clear of Ebola, as additional tests may be conducted. Dr. David Hooper, chief of the infection control unit at

Mass. General, said at a press briefing Wednesday afternoon that the patient, who was not identified, had worked in an administrative capacity in Liberia within the past three weeks. In recent months, West Africa has experienced its worst outbreak of Ebola. “He received treatment last night for malaria,” said Hooper. “That’s beginning. And we will continue to monitor him, and additional testing, if necessary, will be done to make sure that Ebola is not also present.” Boston’s had 14 reported cases of malaria this year, the Boston Public Health Commission said. Thirty-six malaria cases were reported between 2011 and 2013. Malaria, caused by a parasite that commonly infects a certain type of mosquito, can be fatal if not treated.

Malaria is most often transmitted through mosquito bites. Effects can range from fever to death. About 1,500 reported cases of malaria in the United States every year. The disease has caused about 627,000 deaths around the world (out of about 207 million reported episodes).

Its symptoms can resemble the preliminary symptoms of Ebola, including fevers, chills and aching joints. The unidentified patient may be released within a few days, Hooper said. The patient is being kept in an isolated area of the hospital designed as part of its Ebola preparedness plan. Hooper said the treatment area would keep health care workers safe as they await the results of further Ebola testing. The likelihood of the man transmitting malaria is “virtually zero,” he said. Hooper declined to say whether the man was an American citizen, and did not release further details about his identity. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

To hear Lucilia Prates tell it, her father’s death could have been avoided. In 2005, her father Antonio, a 72-year-old semi-retired plumber and grandfather of four from Arlington, was the victim of what she calls “a preventable, hospital-acquired infection.” A kidney surgery was botched and Antonio began to deteriorate, said Prates, who now works as a medical advocate in Lawrence. New research indicates the Prates family isn’t alone. According to a new study, nearly 1 in 4 of Massachusetts residents have reported that they or a person close to them have experienced a medical error during the past five years. The study, carried out by the Harvard School of Public Health, the RAND Corporation and the National Academy for State Health Policy, polled more than 1,200 state residents last September. It was commissioned by the Betsy Lehman Center for Patient Safety and Medical Error Reduction. “My immediate reaction to that is I’m glad that people are opening their eyes and are much more alert about their health care and engaged with

Commission hears concerns over release of state sex offenders Rehabilitation. State authorities need to increase supervision. Many sex offenders who are civilly committed end up being released without supervision, officials at a state treatment center said Wednesday, calling it a “red flag” during a presentation to a special commission studying recidivism. Agencies like the Department of Correction and the Sex Offender Registry Board must improve communication with one another, the officials said. They added that agencies sometimes don’t take treat-

ment records into account when releasing offenders, leading to releases inconsistent with treatment recommendations. Brooke Berard, director of treatment assessment at the Massachusetts Treatment Center, and Kaitlyn Peretti, the center’s supervising psychologist and director of training, made the presentation to the commission, which is chaired by Sen. William Brownsberger (D-Belmont) and Rep. Paul Brodeur (D-Melrose). The center, a medium-security facility, houses inmates convicted of sexual offenses, temporarily committed offenders, and civilly committed offenders who are held after they’ve been incarcerated.

No indictment in NYC police choke hold case Demonstrators. A large number of protesters demonstrated throughout New York City. A New York City grand jury decision not to charge a white police officer who killed an unarmed black man with a choke hold sparked outrage and protests on Wednesday, and the Justice Department said it would investigate the incident. Eric Garner, a 43-year-old father of six, was illegally selling cigarettes on July 17 when police officers tackled him and put him in a choke hold. Police said he had been resisting arrest. The city’s medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. The deadly encounter on Staten Island, New York City’s smallest borough, was captured on video, which quickly

Millions of people stream Ed Sheeran’s music, probably even Victoria’s Secret Angels.

Who’s the undisputed king of online music? Ed Sheeran is. The cuddly British ginger was the most-streamed artist in 2014, according to Spotify, with a staggering 860 million individual streams of his songs, while his album “X” was the most-streamed album globally with 430 million listens. I guess that month I spent streaming the “Flash Gordon” soundtrack on repeat didn’t make as much

of an impact as I’d hoped. Of course, there’s no mention of Spotify-ditching Taylor Swift in the report, so maybe Sheeran’s win should come with an asterisk. Now, for some truly terrifying numbers: Spotify’s more than 50 million registered users streamed more than 7 billion hours of music this year — adding up to about 800,000 years of music, and maybe a few annoying audiobook ads.

During an interview on the “Today” show to promote her role in the new film “Top Five,” Rosario Dawson had to firmly but politely put Matt Lauer in his place when he tried to steer the conversation toward Dawson’s recent

Q&A MICHAEL RAPAPORT TAKES ON THE KNICKS

Interview. The actorfilmmaker got to meet his basketball heroes when he made “When the Garden Was Eden.

Michael Rapaport points out that he was “in the womb in 1970 when the New York Knicks won their first NBA championship and only 3 when they won their second. That didn’t stop the actorfilmmaker from directing “When the Garden Was Eden, a documentary now on Netflix Instant about the team’s storied lineups from the late-’60s through mid-’70s. Given that you didn’t watch

these teams at the time, what’s your history with them? I wanted to be a basketball player when I was growing up. That was my life. Growing up in New York City, the Knicks were my team. The fabric of those championship teams is something I learned about at an early age. Even before I saw them I heard about Walt Frazier, I heard about Earl Monroe, I heard about Willis Reed. Walt Frazier was iconic at that time. And over 40 years, as the team had highs and lows but never got over the hump of winning that championship, you continue to go back to those old teams. There would be no movie if the Knicks would have won two or three championships

since then. It’s amazing to see a time when the NBA was so small and unloved, especially compared to now. They played in the NBA when it was a mom-and-pop league. There were eight teams. They didn’t make a living. It’s hard for us to understand that, because everyone knows who LeBron is, you know who Kobe is. They’re like Apple; they’re brands. Sandra Oh turns to crowdfunding Interview. The “Grey’s Anatomy” star follows up her TV run with a fresh film project, but she needs your help to get it made.

RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER

OPENS NEXT WEEK! DECEMBER 9–14 SHUBERT THEATRE

Bonus question

After 10 seasons on “Grey’s Anatomy,” actress Sandra Oh is going in a very different direction. Oh is lending her voice and producing power to “Window Horses,” an animated film about a young Canadian poet of Chinese and Iranian descent. And she’s learning a lot about the world of crowdfunding, thanks to the films extensive Indiegogo campaign.

THE PIANO GUYS

ONE NIGHT ONLY! DECEMBER 9 WANG THEATRE

What was it about this project that spoke to you? “Window Horses” is pro-girl, it’s pro-tolerance, it’s prodiversity and it’s set in the world of poetry. I realized while watching things that are geared toward young people, young girls, I still do not see myself represented as an Asian person — even with the headway that we have made.

TYLER OAKLEY ONE NIGHT ONLY! DECEMBER 11 EMERSON COLONIAL THEATRE

How do you think we get to a place where projects that are pro-girl and prodiversity don’t just seem like no-brainers?

Sandra Oh is trying to raise funds for “Window Horses,” an animated film. / PROVIDED

I honestly don’t know. I’m fully aware that the Indiegogo campaign is an outsider’s way of making work, and that’s why it appeals to me. Having been inside in some ways for the past decade on a very successful and very well-funded television show, I just want to take what I know from that and bring it to another audience — an audience who is not as well-represented, who actually wants to hear different stories, not mainstream stories.

WHITE CHRISTMAS

How has it been so far interacting with this underrepresented audience? It’s mysterious in its own way because you have no idea what will happen; and I just hope that people will see it and say, “I want to see a stick figure character who has two little slits for eyes and is wearing a chador. I want to see her up there so I’m going to donate.” It’s a platform to connect with people — to connect with like-minded people. Just the amount of people who have responded to it and want to tell their own stories, it’s a like a floodgate. When people — or let’s say larger organizations or paradigm structures — say that no one wants to hear these stories, I just don’t believe it. I don’t believe it at all.

SANDRA OH FILMMAGIC

What about what Shonda Rhimes has done for diverse representation on TV?

The way that her track record can actually prove in a physical, monetized way that people will watch a TV show when there are black people on it, to be quite blunt — it’s like, yes! The character in “Window Horses” is this mixed-race young woman who is trying to discover herself and who has an artist’s voice and goes and finds it in another country. I just know that there is an audience for that. I know there is a girl out there who is going to see herself in this character, and I want her to see it. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

Toys. Children will freak when they see one of these under the tree. Whether you’re an in-theknow parent or a clueless aunt or uncle, knowing what to buy for a kid can be tricky. And you know how kids are: They won’t act like they love something if they really don’t, so the pressure is on. We sorted through hundreds of the latest and greatest toys at the 2014 Time to Play Holiday Showcase and picked five of the best. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

1. Disney’s ‘Frozen’ Sing & Swing Olaf “Frozen” came out last November, but kids are still going crazy for it. One of the newest and cutest “Frozen” toys is this plush Olaf, which sings “In Summer” when you squeeze it. While he sings, his mouth and head bob along to the beat and his body swings in a little dance. If you’re gift-hunting for a 3-to-6-year old, this is sure to put a smile on his or her face. $24.99, TOYS “R” US ALL IMAGES PROVIDED

2. Zoomer Dino Dinosaurs never stop being cool. This remote-controlled robotic toy is trainable and contains sensor-technology that allows it to really interact with people. Kids can teach the dino how to dance, chase, chomp and roar. And this toy has a personality

all its own. The eyes change color based on its mood, and it can even roar, burp and, yes, fart. No wonder kids love it. $79.99, TOYS “R” US

3. Kiwi Crate Kiwi Crate is basically Birchbox for kids. Each month, a box containing a cool project comes in the mail. Not only will the child you’re giving this to be excited about getting mail every month (remember that feeling, before you started paying your own bills?), it’s basically 12 gifts in one. Take that, other show-off gift givers! There are several subscriptions to choose from, but our favorite is the

craft-oriented Doodle Crate. Aimed at kids 9 to 14, each kit contains a new craft with plenty of room for young makers to explore their create side. Plus, it keeps them busy! $12.95, DOODLE.KIWICRATE.COM

Makeup artist Michelle Phan’s YouTube beauty channel has more regular viewers than most prime-time TV shows. To date, the 27-year-old has 7 million subscribers to her self-titled platform, and her videos have been viewed in excess of 1 billion times. Now, the Boston-born self-made celebrity, who already has a cosmetics collection called Em in collaboration with L’Oreal, tells Metro why she’s publishing her own so-called “self-empowering book “Make Up: Your Life Guide to Beauty, Style and Success — Online and Off. How did you first get into makeup? I first recognized the power of makeup at an early age. From observing the way rosy cheeks and red lips transformed Belle in “Beauty and the Beast to watching my mother’s daily beauty ritual, I discovered the dramatic difference that makeup could create. When I was finally allowed to try eyeliner myself, I looked in the mirror and saw a different person looking back. From that moment, I was hooked on makeup – and the sense of confidence, beauty and empowerment it gave me. For me, makeup is art: It’s a way to be creative. To me, everyone who

has used makeup is an artist in their own right. Are you shocked by your popularity? When I decided to go to art school to follow my dream of becoming an artist, I had no idea I would end up on YouTube or that my videos would end up being seen by millions of people. I was not a professionally trained makeup artist. ‌ I am self-taught in every way — from makeup artistry to shooting and editing my videos. I never expected this to happen, but it’s been an incredible adventure and I’ve learned a lot along the way. What’s it like to be considered a ‘make-up guru’? I don’t see myself as a makeup guru but more of a “beauty bestieâ€? — your big sister next door giving you tips to bring out your best. You created your makeup line Em as a “reflectionâ€? of your fans. Did they react well to the products? I am so proud of Em’s success. Em is unique as it is the first makeup line co-created by a community of beauty lovers. It was designed for and with my community to meet their au-

thentic beauty needs based on years of input that I received while being a beauty mentor. The community has been a part of every piece of the brand, from providing input on launch products to shade names and product packaging. What kind of advice can we find in your book? My book will cover everything from makeup and beauty to lifestyle tips. If you want to hear my tips about etiquette and manners, both online and offline, or even learn a bit more about me and how I got my start, this would be a great read for you. I really hope the book will be a tool for everyone: young girls, college students and women. Something you want to keep on your bookshelf and refer to anytime you need a little advice! If you could only keep one piece of clothing and one makeup item, what would they be? It would be a nice oversized scarf that can be turned into a dress. As for my one makeup item, my Em Shade Play concealer palette. I use it to spot-treat discoloration around my eyes, lips, and nose. It comes with six hues that you can mix to conceal, highlight and neutralize. Zoella, Tanya Burr and you: A lot of YouTubers have their own cosmetics lines. What do you think about that? y I am a big supporter of seeing tthe beauty space evolve with new, talented makeup enthusiasts and artists all making beauty more exciting. I love b tthat it is more accessible to anyone and everyone now. MWN

The future

A successful channel, a makeup line, a book: Do you have any other exciting upcoming projects? I recently partnered with Cutting Edge Group and will be launching my own record label, Shift Music Group. I wanted to create a platform

that would provide opportunities for artists, by not only promoting their music in my videos, but giving them further opportunities to get their music heard. I’ve always been passionate about music and artists, and this venture allows me to take my passion and create opportunities for others. I also want to inspire others to build successful brands on YouTube. I’ve teamed up

with Endemol Beyond USA and will be expanding my lifestyle network by building a boutique premium talent network that will feature key tastemakers and pioneers in the YouTube space, as well as curating and create inspirational content for millennials. ELODIE NOĂ‹L, MWN @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

DATING

Deal with relationship issues in a healthy way Making it work. Learn how to bring up concerns without causing a fight. The No. 1 question people in couples’ counseling have, says psychologist Julia Colwell, is “How do we communicate better?” “People really want to be able to talk, but they can’t for some reason,” says Colwell, the author of the new book “The Relationship Skills Workbook.” Here are some of Colwell’s tips for how people in relationships can learn to express themselves freely.

Don’t lose yourself in the relationship One of the most common problems Colwell sees is

Profiles. Word choices vary greatly by state

Breathe

Take time to compose yourself Lashing out in the heat of the moment is never a good idea, says Colwell. “Take a walk or go get a drink [if you are upset],” she suggests. “Trying to problem-solve in that state is a really bad idea because it just gets worse and worse. It’s best to wait at least 15 to 20 minutes.”

when one half of a couple knows something is wrong, but doesn’t take any steps to address it. “They think: ‘We are having a good time and I don’t want to wreck it,’” says Colwell. “So they are pretending. There are a lot of ideas out there that we aren’t supposed to say that stuff.”

Don’t lash out when you’re angry. / INGRAM PUBLISHING

Don’t be accusatory “Instead of saying things like ‘I feel like you don’t pay attention to me’ or ‘You never loved me,’ say something like ‘It makes me feel sad when [we don’t talk],’” Colwell suggests, adding that it’s important to focus on feelings. “Emotions are simple,” says

Admit it: It’s hard not to have your eyes glaze over after spending more than an hour perusing online dating profiles. After a while, it really does seem like everyone loves nothing more than watching “The Wire” and getting drinks on Friday nights with their friends. But it turns out that tastes do tend to align with where online dating users live. The tech site Mashable took a deeper look into how profiles vary across the country. Using data provided to them from Match.com, the site’s researchers were able to pin down the most popular descriptive words in profiles from each state — providing a neat window into the things people think will impress potential love interests in the process. Residents of the Bay State appropriately love the “ocean,” as do our neighbors in Rhode Island. LAKSHMI

It’s the double-bill America didn’t know it needed: Soul singer Har Mar Superstar is traveling the country with Macaulay Culkin’s The Pizza Underground, Mac’s Velvet Underground cover band that sings about pizza. Har Mar Superstar, who goes by Sean Tillman in his offstage moments, says the decision to tour together was easy. “I’ve been good friends with Mac for a long time. He jumps in my van and goes on tour with me a lot, so once he started his own band, it was kind of a no-brainer to join forces and travel together.” Tillman says Culkin is a pretty great travel buddy, too. “He’s like a well-stocked tour mama. Anything you can think of that you might need, he has. You’re like, I need some lefty safety scissors, and he’s like, ‘Oh yeah, I got that.’” Just what might an audience member expect from an evening with these two? “It’s

Movie star

On the silver screen You might recognize Tillman from his efforts in front of the camera. He was Ben Stiller’s dance-off partner in “Starsky and Hutch,” a part he got after director Todd Phillips saw him perform live and invited him to audition. He also appeared in “Whip It” and popped up in “Pitch Perfect” as a member of the older a capella group the main characters get in a fight with after a big competition. Sadly, he wasn’t able to reprise his role in the sequel. “I was supposed to. I got asked to and I was going to do it and go back, but they changed the dates on me when I was on tour in France and I couldn’t get back in time to do it. I think Reggie Watts replaced me,” says Tillman.

like a circusy feel. Everybody gets involved in each other’s sets, and it’s just like a variety show of sorts until it leads up to our Har Mar headlining set, which is just the classic sweaty dance party that we’ve been known to incite,” says Tillman. Tillman, long known as much for his getups onstage as his tendency to shed most of them partway through his sets, has a new number specially prepared for this tour. “I had my friend Elyse make this hockey jersey that’s kind of an homage to the Flying Burrito Brothers and Velvet Underground at the same time. It’s like a pterodactyl midflight,

that’s half-banana, half-pterodactyl, which is my nod to The Pizza Underground slash Velvet Underground.” If you’re now pained by jealousy that you don’t own this magnificent piece of high fashion, you might be reassured to know that only two exist in the world, and the other one belongs to Julian Casablancas. Tillman’s latest record, “Bye Bye 17,” was released by Casablancas’ Cult Records, which Tillman seems pretty happy about. He calls Casablancas “an idea factory,” whose suggestions are always welcome and “constantly” on point. “Every time he makes a sug-

gestion, even if it seems crazy at first, I’ll try it out, and it always works out. It’s almost annoying. It’s like he’s almost psychic,” Tillman says with a laugh. “Bye Bye 17” represents a more serious turn for Tillman, but he’s been interested in soul music since childhood, and points to Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder and Sam Cooke as early influences. “I’ve always been obsessed with music that’s poppy and seemingly happy on the surface but when you get into the lyrics, it’s really sad subject matter,” says Tillman. “I just really like that juxtaposition.”

can be completely avoided. Their job is simply to get riders safely from point A to point B. If it were their job to police the fare, they wouldn’t be driving buses and trolleys all day long for weeks on end with broken fare machines. Clearly, if someone gets on without paying the fare, note their description, where they got on and off and then when safe to do so, call the transit police. No slapping or spitting is necessary.

Re: ‘Trolley driver slapped pregnant passenger who spat on her: MBTA’ (Metro, Dec. 3) Some transit authorities use the slogan “don’t dispute the fare, don’t leave the chair” as a means to protect their drivers. Why does every MBTA driver think it’s their job to collect fare from riders refusing to pay? It’s shocking to read stories like this when these incidents

Jones came in at perfect time in season for Revs Star power

MLS Cup. Jermaine Jones gave the Revs a definite jolt down the stretch of the season. Midfielder Lee Nguyen was named to MLS’ Best XI (their all-league team) on Tuesday and is an MVP candidate, while homegrown forward Charlie Davies is the inspirational figure on a goal-scoring tear in the postseason (four goals). But the fact remains that Jermaine Jones was the main figure in turning everything around for New England this summer. The Revs are 11-1-2 since they acquired the U.S. national team midfielder in August and it’s important to note that this is a team that suffered through an eightgame losing streak in the middle of the season (something no other MLS Cup finalist had done before now). New England already had plenty of talent before Jones’ arrival, but there’s no doubt he was the missing piece that brought them all together. Jones, at age 33, is the oldest active player on the Revolution, and is closer in age to head coach Jay Heaps (38) than many of his new teammates who are fresh out of college. While Jones felt his age after Saturday’s draw vs. New York that advanced the Revs, 4-3, on aggregate, he absolutely

Jermaine Jones is married to former Miss Germany, Sarah Gerth. • Jones was hoping that the Revolution drew Los Angeles in the MLS Cup (Sunday, 3 p.m., ESPN) as he and Gerth have a home in Southern California. In fact, their house was once owned by actress Tori Spelling.

appreciates the opportunity in front of him. “We’ve had a lot of progression from the beginning,” Jones said. “It was easy to come [to New England] because it’s like a big family. You can see it on the field, we like playing with each other.” Born to a German mother and American father in Frankfurt, Germany, Jones came

There were plenty of close victories last season and the team even had a near -.500 record in early December last year (8-12). The 2014-15 Celtics were expected to be improved from last year’s lottery bunch, but so far late-game struggles have paved the way to a 4-11 record. “When it comes easy, we’ve been good,” Celtics head coach Brad Stevens said. “When it gets tough, we haven’t …

With his trademark dreadlocks and numerous tattoos, not to mention his ferocious playing style, Jones undoubtedly brings a distinct attitude every time he suits up.

Casual U.S. soccer fans became aware of Jones during the 2014 World Cup, where he was one of the top American players and where he scored one of the more incredible goals of the entire tournament, against Portugal. with experience at big-time German clubs like Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke 04. This led to appearances in the UEFA Champions League (where he became only the second American ever to score in a knockout-round game) and Europa League.
