A Cambridge City Council vote Monday night could make the city the largest on the East Coast to ban plastic bags. If adopted, the Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance would make stores replace disposable plastic bags with recyclable ones. Cambridge City Councillor Dennis Carlone said the ban would protect local waterways, marine life and reduce waste. “It’s almost silly [the ban]
hasn’t happened yet,” Carlone told Metro. “It’s kind of crazy how terrible it is, yet we don’t seem to do anything on it. For it to go into another year would be disrespectful to our environment.” Cambridge began investigating the plastic bag ban in 2007, but had little success taking action due to financial concerns from local businesses, Carlone said. “The benefits far outweigh any additional costs that will be borne by companies. We’re not talking about huge expenses here,” he said. “It seems very easy to do. I think everyone would say it’s common sense.” The Retail Association of

Civil rights. Boston protesters aimed to be disruptive, Gov. Patrick says
Man opens fire from moving car State Police in Plymouth arrested William W. White III, 33, of Dorchester, for allegedly firing a gun from a moving car over the weekend. The car’s driver, Jocelyn Morales, 26, of Middleboro, was also arrested and faces two accessory-related charges.

Massachusetts says a ban won’t correct the problems caused by improper disposal of the bags. A similar measure went into effect in Brookline in November 2013, though that ban extends to polystyrene containers, too. That same year, lawmakers moved for Massachusetts to be the first state to enact a plastic bag ban, but the measure was stalled. In 1990, Nantucket became the first U.S. municipality to pass the ban. Great Barrington and Manchester have also banned the bags.
“I’d support a ban. Reducing our carbon footprint is always a good thing. We’d be taking a step toward being more sustainable. And it’s not like it’s a huge pain to use a paper bag.”

Gov. Deval Patrick said some civil rights protesters in Boston over the weekend “weren’t interested in engagement because part of the point was to be disruptive.” Police arrested 23 people on Saturday who tried to block Rte 93. They could be arraigned as early as Monday. All face
disorderly conduct charges and one man may be charged with assault and battery on a police officer. “I think it does beg some questions,” Gov. Deval Patrick said Sunday on CNN’s Face the Nation. “What is it we’re trying to accomplish beyond disruption?” Gov. Patrick, the country’s
only sitting black governor, said on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, “We went to great lengths to try to connect with the organizers to the extent they were organized to get a sense of what they needed so that we could accommodate the protests and respect that right.” DANNY MCDONALD

Weekend marred by murders
Vandalism
Swatstikas painted on Tufts building
Violence. Two shooting incidents and one stabbing occurred between Friday night and Sunday morning. A 29-year-old man was shot to death in Chelsea early Sunday morning, marking the third slaying in the region in two days. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office said police are investigating a fatal shooting at a Chester Avenue home, located near Shawmut Street. The incident occurred just after 3 a.m. Police found two men shot at the scene. One man, a 29-year-old, died from his injuries. The second victim, 34, was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The identities of both men were not released by state police. The incident is being investigated by police. No ar-

rests had been announced by press time. Chelsea Police and the Suffolk DA urged anyone with information regarding the incidents to call Chelsea detectives at 617-466-4843 or leave an anonymous tip at 617-466-4880.
The latest killing followed the Friday night fatal shooting of a 22-year-old Boston man in Randolph. Police found Jameil Williams around 11:30 p.m.; he was taken to a Brockton hospital where he was pronounced dead. Earlier that same evening,
Sean Dwyer, 29, of South Boston was found bleeding from stab wounds about 50 feet away from his Adams Street barber shop in Dorchester. Police pronounced him dead at the scene around 6:20 p.m. Dwyer was found in the
road by an MBTA bus driver. As of Sunday press time, no arrests had been made in connection with the Dwyer slaying.
Police are seeking vandals who painted swastikas on the side of a Tufts University building, local press reports said. The Nazi symbol was seen on Lewis Hall, on the university’s Medford campus. “Such deplorable acts, which are counter to the values of the Tufts community, are deeply concerning. We are taking this incident extremely seriously,” the university said in a statement Sunday, The Boston Globe reported. In April 2013, dozens of swastikas were painted onto signs and buildings in Medford, including the school’s athletic fields. University spokesmen did not return calls before press time. METRO

State’s first casino expected in July Gaming. First slots will arrive in Plainville this summer, then MGM and Wynn Resorts will follow by 2017. Massachusetts Gaming Commission Chairman Stephen Crosby says the state’s first casino gaming facility should open this summer. Appearing Sunday on WCVB’s On The Record, Crosby said the slots parlor in Plainville will open in late June or early July. Two larger casinos licensed in the state – MGM’s Springfield proposal and Wynn Resorts plans for Everett – should open in 2017.
Crosby said traffic improvements in Charlestown’s Sullivan Square are the biggest hurdle facing Wynn Resorts’ plan to convert a polluted former industrial site along the Mystic River in Everett. He said company owner Steve Wynn “will pay whatever it takes, literally whatever it takes, to fix the traffic situation.” Last month, it was revealed the Internal Revenue Service had requested information about Wynn Resorts’ safeguards against money laundering. Wynn has denied it is under investigation. Crosby said federal authorities have not advised the commission of any ongoing probe regarding money-laundering at Wynn Resorts.

Hostages held in Australia cafe Prime Minister. Tony Abbott addressed the public about the ongoing situation. Dozens of hostages were trapped inside a central Sydney cafe on Monday, with local television showing some being forced to hold up a black flag with white Arabic writing in the window, raising fears of an attack linked to Islamic militants. Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who has warned of militant plans to attack Australian targets, said he was convening
a meeting of the cabinet’s national security committee for a briefing on the hostage situation at the Lindt Cafe in the country’s commercial capital. “Police are dealing with an armed incident and specialist officers are attempting to make contact [with] those inside a cafe,” New South Wales Police said in a statement. Australia, which is backing the United States and its escalating action against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, is on high alert for attacks by radicalized Muslims or by homegrown fighters returning from the conflict in the Middle East. A Lindt executive said
there were about 10 staff working at the cafe, Sky Business television reported. Chief Executive Steve Loane also said there were “probably 30 customers” in the cafe, according to Sky Business. Dozens of heavily armed police surrounded the cafe in Martin Place, home to the Reserve Bank of Australia, commercial banks and close to the New South Wales state parliament. Television footage showed several people inside the cafe standing with their hands pressed against the windows. The situation was unresolved as of press time. REUTERS

Hostage crisis
Busy Sydney comes to a standstill Local media reported that the nearby Sydney Opera House was temporarily evacuated after a suspicious package had been found. A staff member at the worldfamous venue said she was still in the building but declined to comment further and police said they were still trying to confirm the incident. Tourists were being let back into the venue by
early afternoon. Trains and buses were stopped and roads were blocked in the area, with train operators saying there had been a bomb threat at Martin Place. Traders in currency markets said the hostage news may have contributed to a dip in the Australian dollar, which was already under pressure from global risk aversion as oil prices fell. The local currency was pinned at $0.8227, having hit its lowest since mid-2010 last week. Qantas Airways Ltd., said

Parents of almost half the young children killed by a gunman at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, two years ago on Sunday have taken initial steps toward filing lawsuits tied to one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. The parents of eight of the children killed in the Dec. 14, 2012, carnage, which 20-yearold gunman Adam Lanza ended by shooting himself dead as he heard police sirens approach, have notified Connecticut courts that they may file wrongful death lawsuits in state or federal court. Their initial court filings, related to legal entities created in memory of their children, do not indicate who the families could target in their lawsuits,

according to a chief court clerk for North Fairfield County Probate Court. While the parents could not be reached for comment, a spokesman for Bridgeport law firm Koskoff, Koskoff and Bieder said that a lawyer at the firm had recently met with some of the Newtown parents about potential suits. “Attorney Josh Koskoff has met with parents about legal action, said Geraldo Parrilla, a legal assistant with the firm. While Newtown grabbed
the nation’s attention, school shootings remain common across the United States. Some 95 incidents, including fatal and nonfatal assaults, suicides and unintentional shootings have taken place across 33 states since Newtown, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, a group created by the merger of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, founded by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a group founded after the attack. Sweden. Russian military jet in near collision with Scandinavian jetliner A Russian military jet nearly collided with a commercial passenger airplane in international airspace near southern Sweden on Friday, Swedish authorities said, but Russia insisted its jet had kept at a safe distance. Passenger flight SK1755, operated by a unit of Scandinavian airline service SAS from the Danish capital Copenhagen to Poznan in Poland, was diverted by Swedish authorities before a collision occurred, the authorities said. But Russia’s Defence Ministry on Sunday denied its plane had come close to colliding with a civilian airliner,
official news agency TASS reported. “A flight was carried out in strict accordance with international rules on air space and did not violate the borders of other countries and was at a safe distance from the flight paths of civilian airplanes,” Defence Ministry spokesman General Major Igor Konashenko was quoted as saying. Relations between Russia and the West have soured in recent months over Moscow’s role in the conflict in Ukraine. Many countries have cited suspected displays of Russian military prowess. REUTERS

Israel said it hoped the United States would veto any moves at the United Nations to set a time frame for its withdrawal from territory Palestinians seek for state, but a senior U.S. official said it was too early to say. John Kerry will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Rome on Monday to discuss various proposals for a Palestinian state that are circulating at the United Nations. Later on Monday, Kerry will
travel to Paris for talks with European counterparts and then on to London to meet Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat and a delegation from the Arab League, who will urge the United States not to use its U.N. Security Council veto to block the proposals. The hastily arranged meetings suggested urgency in America’s drive to manage efforts among Security Council members to draft a new proposal before Israeli elections in March. Kerry said on Friday he wanted to defuse tensions during the talks. In Jerusalem, violence has surged in recent weeks because of a dispute over access to a holy site in an Israeli-annexed part of the city. REUTERS

Now you can get high on the Queen’s supply
During “The Queen’s Garden,” a TV special set to air in the U.K. at Christmas, horticulturist Alan Titchmarsh apparently stumbled upon some magic mushrooms in the gardens of Buckingham Palace. “It’s eaten in some cultures for its hallucinogenic effects, but it also makes people who eat it very sick,” an ecology professor explains to Titchmarsh, according to the Telegraph. “The oldfashioned thing to do was to feed it to the village idiot, then drink his urine because you get all of the high without any of the sickness.” Well then! Justin Bieber deserves credit for at least one thing: After starting o 2014 with this ridiculous, glassy-eyed mug shot in Miami after he was arrested for drag-racing, driving under the inuence and whiningly resisting arrest, I was pretty sure he wouldn’t make it to December without ending up in jail or rehab. While he did manage to juggle multiple pending court cases for a DUI, assaulting a driver and egging his neighbor’s house, Canada’s little scamp managed to make it out of 2014 unscathed — well, pretty much.

Boston Music Awards honors best of the locals Now that we’ve officially entered awards season, Boston played its part with the annual Boston Music Awards. Last night was the 27th edition of the festival, which celebrates musicians with strong New England ties. We’re talking groups who actually spent a lot of time around here, rather than, as the BMA site puts it, “John Mayer who went to Berklee for one year.” Performers included Keytar Bear (that guy is having quite the year), Hallelujah the Hills, Jenny Dee + the Delinquents, John Powhida International Airport and many more. Past honorees include such luminaries as Amanda Palmer, the Dropkick Murphies and Passion Pit, for Best Boston Artist Who Doesn’t Live in Boston. There’s James Franco, entertainer, and James Franco, artist. While he has a new, possibly worlddestroying comedy en route Christmas Day — the North Korea-set “The Interview” — he’s also busy promoting “The Color of Time,” his latest experimental film. While teaching a graduate course in filmmaking at NYU, he asked his 12 students to collaborate on a film based on C.K. Williams’ poems. Furthermore, he gave them the chance to direct

name actors, including: Jessica Chastain, Mila Kunis and Zach Braff. What initially motivated you to make this a project for students in your class? This was a way to bridge worlds — to have students work with experienced, A-list actors and have a real filmmaking experience. I’m really about collaboration, whether it’s with people more experienced than I am or less experienced. I liked being free of the commercial concerns that are present in professional filmmaking. What made you think C.K. Williams’ poems would lend well to film? His poems — or at least these poems [from the book “Tar”] — are very narrative-based. They all center on a central figure, who we interpreted as Williams looking back on moments in his life. That gave us

a structure, a character at the center. What I like about these poems is they aren’t just about memory; a lot of them are universal. They’re about coming of age, being in a relationship, having jobs. But they’re seen through a poet’s eyes. How did the students react to having to direct A-list actors? One thing I saw happening in some student films was a lack
“The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife” is a smart, funny play that takes a delicious swipe at the core of the well-intentioned, well-heeled residents of Manhattan’s Upper West Side. While the Lyric Stage Company’s production of playwright Charles Busch’s most mainstream play to date does generate laughs, it’s missing the requisite bite that gives this spoof of the faux-sophisticated, liberal elite its gumption. Director Larry Coen seems to be playing nice with the material, and the result is only intermittently funny. Ellen Colton’s Frieda feels like a South Shore nana in a bad wig. She should look more
like the late, great Joan Rivers. Marina Re settles in nicely as Marjorie after a rocky start, while Joel Colodner captures the God-like ego crisis of the Allergist, Ira. Zaven Ovian delivers a solid performance as their doorman Mohammed. However, Caroline Lawton’s (Marjorie’s old friend, Lee) excessive flirtation feels contrived and she ruins a big moment by making the surprise so obvious a child could see it coming. A play of this nature requires crisp, flawless execution by rigid characters right out of central casting. When they don’t deliver, you’re left with a play that’s smarter than its production. of sense of how much they needed to direct actors. They work with young actors or inexperienced actors, so they have to direct them more than usual. When you work with experienced actors you don’t have to do that much. They know what they’re doing. For the experienced actors, it was great to go back to a film set where people were still doing it from a very pure place. They
You’re constantly jumping between big films and your own experimental projects. This project was shot at the same time as “Oz the Great and Powerful” — one of the most expensive movies ever made. When you’re spending that much money, you don’t want to experiment with form or get too artistic in a daring way. With “The Color of Time,” we didn’t have huge budgets. We had the freedom to try new things, like getting a bunch of directors to make a unified movie. were so in love and so in awe of just making a movie that the experienced actors could just go on set and not have to worry about anything but doing their art. HOW TO MAKE YOUR CRITICISM CONSTRUCTIVE 3
Identify and take ownership of your interpretation of the behavior. This keeps your mind open to the possibility that you may be wrong, which can be a bit tricky because so often we make wrong assumptions about what people’s behavior means instead of asking them directly. Such assumptions are usually projections based on fears and old stories from the past. When you own your interpretation, you take responsibility for your reactions, which gives your listener room to stop and reflect on where you’re coming from. Here’s how you might apply this step to our example: “When you’re late, I get sad and mad. The story I tell myself, which may or may not be true, is that you don’t care about my needs or my time [just like my mother did when she came late to pick me up at school].”
Lately, I find myself getting frustrated and snapping at my husband when he doesn’t listen to me or follow up with things I ask him to do; he gets defensive and says I’m too critical.
You’re not alone. Communication is the key to a healthy relationship — and yet, you’d be surprised how many people don’t know how to effectively express themselves, especially if they grew up in homes where self-expression wasn’t encouraged or the person with the loudest voice always won. Fortunately, communication is a skill that can be learned, even as an adult. But like most skills, it takes know-how and practice to get the hang of it. Here are some simple ways to use an “I statement” to improve your chances that what you have to say won’t fall on deaf ears.
1
Identify the upsetting behavior. The No. 1 mistake people make is attacking a person’s character (“you’re so lazy”) or lobbing accusations (“you don’t care”) instead of pointing out the specific offending behavior. Not only do such statements put people on the defensive by suggesting that something is wrong with them, but they don’t give

the person an opportunity to change. Try expressing yourself by starting like this: “When you show up late to dinner and don’t call ahead …”
2
Identify the feeling. This may sound simple, but many people can’t distinguish thoughts from feelings. So often, when I ask clients how they feel about someone’s behavior, they say things like, “I feel that he’s lazy,” or “I feel that he’s selfish.” These are judgments that don’t help the other person understand what it’s like to be on the receiving end of their actions. If you’re not sure about what you’re

Make a request for the future. This conveys your faith that change is possible and further clarifies your wishes. “When you come late to dinner, I feel mad. The story I tell myself is that you don’t care about my time or want to be with me. In the future, I would like you to please be on time.”

Networking. Now’s your time to shine. It seems like everyone has a horror story about their workplace’s annual Christmas party — you don’t have to look far to find tales of drunken bosses or regrettable flirtations. But one expert notes that it’s also important not to let those stories distract from the fact that the annual winter gathering is also the perfect time to put your best foot forward in terms of your career. “It’s really one of the most important business days of your year, says Patricia Rossi, an etiquette coach and the author of “Everyday Etiquette: How to Navigate 101 Common and Uncommon Social Situations. “It’s the one time of the year you can get to someone higher up in the company that you can’t get to normally. Rossi shares these tips on how junior employees can work the room and shine during a holiday party.
Put on a smile and attend
Don’t just talk to your oďŹƒce buddies
“The first thing you have to do is go, says Rossi. “The company has invested both time and money in organizing it. And this isn’t the occasion to be fashionably late or to just stop by for a few minutes either. “Arrive on time, but don’t be the last to leave, Rossi advises.
“You want to move about the cabin — don’t latch onto one person and talk to them all night, says Rossi. For the introverts out there, Rossi says it’s also important to remember that almost everyone feels awkward when it comes to holiday parties.
Small talk
Always talk to the spouses “Your manager is probably going to be bringing a spouse, notes Rossi. “And the spouse is always nervous about attending these things. But if you talk to them and are engaging, on the ride home, she or he will say, ‘Oh, I met your employee and they were so lovely, so nice.’
Have conversation topics in your pocket Because it can be intimidating to approach your company CEO or other highranking execs, most employees shy away from doing so. “Have two or three interesting things to talk about, she advises.“If your company VP is a big donor to the [art museum], that means you know they like art. A little research goes a long way. at 4 a.m. and go work on my company before heading to work, says Blair. “Most people don’t put in that time.

Speak a Foreign Language? Put it to work!

Don’t quit your job. “I always recommend including their day job into their plans at first, says Take notes
Keep a journal “Whenever I’m early in the process [of developing an idea], I’d just start writing about it, says Blair. “I have a venture capital fund and the first thing I do when considering investing in an idea is sketch it out in my journal. Treatment of blacks terrible Re: ‘Lay blame where it’s due’ (Metro, Dec. 11) Letter writer Delores Paulk is spot-on regarding police violence and the mistreatment of blacks. It is sad when one can predict the outcome of a police encounter based on the race of the civilian. Tragedy no excuse for barbarism
Poplawski killed three police officers who were responding to a domestic violence incident in Pittsburgh, but he was able to surrender without being seriously injured. The difference between these two cop killers and Eric Garner, who was killed for selling untaxed cigarettes, was their race. The disparate treatment of blacks by police is reprehensible and should be decried by all law-abiding citizens. It is also a travesty of justice when prosecutors who are tasked with bringing an indictment against thug cops act as defense attorneys instead.

Pats continue to cruise as they crush Dolphins NFL. The Patriots ripped their division rivals, 41-13, Sunday at Gillette as they moved one step closer to the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
In the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era, Patriots fans rarely have to wait until Christmas Day to feel the holiday joy of a division title. The Pats again wrapped up the AFC East early, winning their sixth straight division title and 11th in the past 12 years, courtesy of a 41-13 blasting of the Dolphins at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. The Pats moved to 11-3 on the season and maintained their position as the No. 1 seed in the AFC with two regular season games remaining (at the Jets next Sunday, and vs. Buffalo on Dec. 28). Ryan Tannehill threw for 346 mostly meaningless yards as the Dolphins were shut out in the second half. Duron Harmon and Patrick Chung each picked off Tannehill, who finished with a 73.5 QB rating. Tannehill was also sacked four times, highlighted by the returning Chandler Jones’ 1.5 sacks on the day. The Pats were dominant in the third quarter, posting 24 points. Brady’s first pass of the

Buffalo pulled off a stunning victory Sunday, beating Green Bay 21-13, thanks to two Aaron Rodgers interceptions (both by Bacarri Rambo) and a Marcus Thigpen 75-yard punt return. Rodgers also coughed up a fumble that would result in a costly safety with 1:51 remaining. •

Pats make Dolphins eat words As a way to motivate his team ahead of Sunday’s win over Miami, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had quotes from Dolphins players displayed throughout the team’s training facility last week, according to ESPN. The quotes were made by Miami players following its Week 1 win over the Pats and they reportedly talked of how New England “quit” in the Sept. 7 game.

With 10 days remaining before Christmas and 52 games left in the regular season, it may seem silly for the Bruins to start worrying about the standings this early in the season. Then again, Saturday’s 3-2 shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators was yet another example of their season-long, debilitating goal-scoring issue. The Bruins (15-13-2) fell to 1-4-1 in their last six games and have been held to two goals or fewer in seven of their last nine. This freefall has caused them to tumble

If the postseason started today, they would be the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference. Bruins head coach Claude Julien called their performance against the Senators (12-12-5) “average. Those are the type of games that Boston needs to win, particularly as it enters a three-game road trip this week (they are 6-7-0 away from TD Garden this season). “We are still struggling to score goals, but there are a lot of other things that could be better, Julien said. “We didn’t move the puck in the back end very well. What’s more, Boston blew not one but two leads on home ice (where they had been 9-6-1). Julien refused to make David Krejci’s hip injury an excuse as it may be hard to explain how one player’s prolonged absence could ruin an entire team’s collective confidence and psyche. After they surprisingly fired head coach Paul MacLean last week, the Senators entered Saturday’s game just 2-7-1 in their last 10 games. Some positives coming out of their first shootout loss of the season included Craig Cunningham’s first NHL goal (shorthanded) and Loui Eriksson finding the back of the net. ond straight game but once again didn’t manage to get a shot off. Milan Lucic is currently on a makeshift line with Chris Kelly and Cunningham, but he helped bring some emotion to Boston with only his second fighting major of the season. Ottawa defenseman Mark Borowiecki took a run at Lucic in the corner (causing his helmet to pop off), so he responded by pounding him into the ice. Fighting has been mostly phased out of the NHL, and even the Bruins’ arsenal, but clearly moments like that inspire the fans and Lucic’s teammates. “We can’t wait much longer to turn things around, noted Lucic. “We have five games until Christmas break, so we have to get going. The Bruins are in Nashville on Tuesday, Minnesota on Wednesday and Winnipeg on Friday before returning home on Sunday to take on Buffalo.
