Weeks of rancor between police officers and City Hall have not fazed NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton. “I have not lost control of this department,” Bratton told Metro in an interview Tuesday evening. Caught in the crossfire between police unions that accuse Bratton’s boss of abandoning them, and protesters seeking to reform the NYPD, New York’s twice-appointed top cop held firm that his officers are doing their jobs and doing them well. The NYPD has been meeting New Yorkers’ “very high expectations” and delivering on its promise to make the city safer, he said, pointing to 20 years of plummeting crime rates. On Monday, Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio announced crime fell 4.6 percent in 2014. Murders fell from 1,561 in 1994 to 332 last year. Bratton said protests by officers who blame him

and the mayor for undermining public support for the NYPD have hurt the “public image of the department.” “This is a great organization,” Bratton said. “It has its issues at the moment; issues that I am very confident we will work through.” “Cops have a 20-year career,” he said. “The issues of the moment are not going to last 20 years.” On Sunday, hundreds of officers attending the funeral for slain cop Wenjian Liu turned their backs on the mayor for a second time in two weeks, ignoring a formal request from Bratton to refrain from protesting at the services. “They were off duty,” Bratton said. Off-duty officers — even while in uniform, as thousands were

De Blasio has been scorned by many cops, especially Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch, for meeting with police critics before talking to unions and for telling the public he had urged his biracial teenage son Dante to be wary of police. Bratton on Monday said the behavior of cops who’d turned their backs had disappointed him, and told reporters the officers had “embarrassed themselves.” The murders of Liu and Ramos as they sat in their patrol car in Brooklyn on Dec. 20, Bratton told Metro, was the hardest moment of his first year back. By Wednesday morning, Bratton beamed as 891 new officers were sworn in at a ceremony in Queens. He told the newest members of the NYPD — which hail from 49 different countries and speak 40 different languages — to work as a team and prepare for a constantly changing world. “Don’t blow it,” he told the new recruits. “Don’t blow this opportunity.” CHESTER SORIA @chestersoria

Hookah bars shut for selling tobacco Smoked. Some have been mixing banned tobacco with shisha. The Health Department said Wednesday it wants to revoke licenses for 13 hookah bars violating the city’s anti-smoking law.

Bars can offer a commonly used substance known as shisha so long as it’s tobacco-free, the agency explained. The agency operated an undercover sting with the help of New York University students to identify the bars in Manhattan and Queens illegally offering shisha with tobacco. “These 13 hookah bars

are knowingly flouting the law by serving tobaccobased shisha,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett. “We will not tolerate this willful disregard of New York City’s smoke-free air laws and have already taken steps to revoke the permits of these establishments.” The agency said they discreetly took samples

from the bars and sent them in for testing, only to find all contained tobacco. In 2002, New York City banned tobacco smoking in workplaces, restaurants and bars. None of the establishments were available for comment. CHESTER SORIA @chestersoria

NYC plans to give grades to beauty shops Health. Legislation is aimed at protecting customers and workers from unsanitary conditions. New Yorkers can look forward to not getting an infection with their weekly mani-pedi, and to a more hygienic haircut. Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., and Council Member Rafael Espinal introduced legislation on Wednesday that would give letter grades to salons based on cleanliness, similar to the system for city restaurants. Diaz and Espinal said most salon owners keep a clean shop. Those who don’t, however, are putting their customers at risk for infections and other health problems. A report by Public Advocate Letitia James says unsanitized tools have given customers fungal and other infections, including staph. New York has 27 inspectors who inspect the state’s 5,000 nail salons, about 2,000 of which are in the city. If passed, the legislation would also create a customer bill of rights, and expand training for hair and nail professionals with the New York State Division of Licensing Ser-

vices to make salons safer for customers and employees, who can be exposed to toxic chemicals in nail products. “Maybe my boss don’t like it. I don’t care, A, B, C, D,” said Annie Tong, a manicurist at Candy Nail Salon in lower Manhattan. Tong, who lives in Brooklyn and has been doing nails for 10 years, said she sees a lot of repeat customers who don’t usually question the sanitary standards, and come back for the affordable prices. Rommy Pennella, executive director of the New York Hispanic Cosmetology and Beauty Chamber of Commerce, said local salon owners fear new requirements, such as ventilation systems, they won’t

be able to afford. “They have a lot of concern about it,” said Pennella, who said her organization advocates for both clients and owners. Ashraf Ghashvand, a hairstylist at Le Salon on East 44th Street, said when the salon opened six and a half years ago, they switched to organic products after seeing customers with sores and hives from conventional products. The salon now sees clients with allergies, pregnant women, cancer patients and others who want an alternative to toxic chemicals. “We are really trying to tell the public to stay healthy,” Ghashvand said. “We are going to get an ‘A,’ definitely,” she said of the letter grading proposal. Hunt continues for Frenchmen after 12 are killed in Paris attack French journalist

I’m Charlie Devastated. That’s the first word I can think of when I learn that Islamic terrorists have murdered my friend Bernard Maris, one of 12 people, including eight journalists, killed in an attack on the satirical French weekly, Charlie Hebdo. I once invited Bernard to be guest editor of Metro France for a day. He was erudite and brilliant, always keen to explain complex concepts. I remember our first meeting, in a cafe. He spoke to me like a father to his son, and gave me some wise advice on how to be a good journalist. Charlie Hebdo is one of the last newspapers in France still fighting for freedom of the press and freedom of expression. It used that freedom every week, publishing political cartoons that were powerful enough to make people think, and powerful enough to provoke such a disproportionate reaction. And I am devastated as a young Frenchman who

“I’m devastated as a journalist. We each entered this profession mindful of the trail blazed by our predecessors and hoping that one day our own words would end an injustice somewhere.” grew up devouring satirical comics like the ones in Charlie Hebdo that drew such a virulent reaction. As a kid I watched cartoons by Cabu, an artist of immense talent with a dry sense of humor. On the sly, I read the explicit comics of Wolinsky. As a student, I laughed until my sides split over the Charb’s drawings each week on the cover of Charlie Hebdo. By killing those writers and illustrators of such immense talent, these terrorists killed a part of France, a part of the French identity: sometimes arrogant, sometimes bawdy, but essential for good conduct of democracy. Washington. President Barack Obama described the attack as cowardly and evil. An 18-year-old man, sought by police over Wednesday’s shooting attack at satirical weekly magazine Charlie Hebdo that killed 12 people, handed himself voluntarily to police in northeastern France, an official at the Paris prosecutor’s office said. Police are hunting three French nationals, including brothers: Said Kouachi, born in 1980; Cherif Kouachi, born in 1982; and Hamyd Mourad born in 1996. The official, who declined to identify the man, said he had turned himself in at a police station in

Charleville-Mézières. The hooded attackers stormed the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo, a weekly known for lampooning Islam and other religions, in the most deadly militant attack on French soil in decades. French police staged a huge manhunt for the attackers who escaped by car after shooting dead some of France’s top cartoonists as well as two police officers. About 800 soldiers were brought in to shore up security across the capital. Police issued a document to forces saying the three men were being sought for murder. The source said one of them had been identified by his ID card left in the getaway car. The Kouachi brothers were from the Paris region while Mourad was from

This is even sillier than “Spinal Tap.” Bieber also kicked off his new gig with a six-second video featuring him playing drums, and I’m pretty sure that, at least, is all Bieber.

Interview. The Devil Makes Three brings a punk feel to bluegrass The Devil Makes Three may be touring in 2015, but the band sounds like it could have been lifted straight out of the Depression. Lead singer Pete Bernhard grew up listening to blues music, then fell into the punk scene in Boston, all of which led to a band (bassist Lucia Turino and guitarist Cooper McBean are the other members) that mixes Americana with a punk DIY mentality. “I don’t even think I did it completely intentionally. My family introduced me to acoustic music, and then when I found punk music and the punk DIY scene, I was just so totally taken with it. When I started a band, those were the tools I had available to me,” says Bernhard. He has a lot of praise for the punk scene. That DIY mentality proved helpful for the members of the band as they built a following. “I think that without it, we wouldn’t be a band,”

says Bernhard. The grassroots model proved fruitful creatively, as their latest album, “I’m a Stranger Here,” takes inspiration from all that time on the road. “I don’t think we had a busier year than the year before we recorded that album. We had just spent so much time on the road and a lot of material that snuck in is from that experience, for sure. You can’t help it, the life we live,” says Bernhard. The album is darker thematically than prior ones, which Bernhard says came from some rough times. “It was not a great time for the band — not as a musical unit, but we just had a hard couple of years with a lot of friends passing away, and things just sort of falling apart. And whatever’s happening in your life usually ends up on the album,” Bernhard says with a laugh. LISA WEIDENFELD

Band members

No drummer necessary The Devil Makes Three is unusual in that they don’t have a regular drummer, though they do sometimes play with one onstage. “We started out with a drummer,” says Bernhard. “He had to leave the group, but he was such a good musician, we had a hard time replacing him.” So they went on as a three-piece, and Bernhard says it’s been beneficial. “I’m not a big fan of drums. I think that once you have a drummer, it’s just so easy to say what you sound like. Not having one kind of keeps people guessing. You don’t need drums to have rhythm.”

Carmen Ejogo on the relevancy of ‘Selma’ Interview. The actress discusses her reasons for playing Coretta Scott King — again. The junket for “Selma — Hollywood’s first full-on film about Martin Luther King Jr. (played by David Oyelowo) — was held the day after protests in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Chicago in the wake of the Eric Garner decision. It’s impossible not to see parallels between the two, especially as the film focuses exclusively on the activism. Not only is co-star Carmen Ejogo aware of this; “Selma is the second time she’s played Coretta Scott King, following 2001’s HBO movie “Boycott.

This ďŹ lm is, needless to say, incredibly relevant. It’s intensely relevant, and in a positive, inspiring way. I feel the message of “Selmaâ€? is that civil disobedience and hard work can really make change. It’s not just some hippie notion. It actually has worked, and policy has changed as a result, historically. I’m very encouraged when I see these protests have been staying relatively peaceful and that they clearly figured out some of the strategies of this era. It gives me hope that it might actually go somewhere, unlike the Occupy Wall Street movement. There’s something more galvanized and cohesive about the approach to this movement. What convinced you to return to playing Coretta?

To play her again it had to be revelatory in some way or it had to be different enough. The same thing for David: If it was just about creating the iconic monument in stone of Martin Luther King, I don’t think we’d have been engaged. I’m always intrigued by the interior life of people who have an external operation that does not match their internal essence. For me, Coretta is the epitome of that. She became a master manipulator of her own image. There was this other side to her: the intellect, the wasted academic, the artist who trained to be a singer. There were all these

things that were never expressed until after Martin died. Then she became an advocate for LGBT rights. She was progressive. Coretta is at a very different place here than she was in “Boycott.” She was a much more weary, burdened, frustrated woman at that point. In 1955 they’d just been thrust into the position of leadership of the movement. There was a naivete and a hopefulness that is starting to ebb by 1965.

Hollywood and race

Getting better? The recent Sony leaks revealed a resistance among execs to cater to black audiences. Ejogo says it’s still better than it was. “Box office is everything, and luckily ‘12 Years a Slave’ has had massive box office appeal all over the world, killing all ridiculous myths that black films don’t travel international-

ly,” she says. “Traditionally that has been why a lot of films don’t get past the start mark in Hollywood: They think they won’t be able to sell outside of the States. That notion has been completely quashed. Hopefully this film will do the same.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Make time for love

“If you are a busy professional who is spending roughly 10 hours at work each day and trying to balance home and work, it’s about making time,â€? says Michel. “If you put a lot of time and eort into your career, the very least you can do is do the same for your relationship.â€?

Ready to meet ‘the one’ in 2015?

Open your eyes

Recognize a good thing “Many people, especially in a big city, are always thinking that there is something better around the corner, notes Michel. Don’t let your illusions lead you to turn your back on what could be a wonderful relationship.

Love. Here are some tips for those who are ready to get hitched.

Founder Dana Michel knows that a dating site named “Marriage Material won’t appeal to everyone. But, she says, that’s exactly the point. “It’s very clear that it’s not a hookup site, Michel points out. “It’s set up for people who are successful in their careers and they’ve never focused as much on their private lives, but now they are ready for that. We asked Michel to offer some advice for the singles out there who are hoping that 2015 will be the year they find love.

Don’t waste your time It can be hard, but Michel says it’s best that singles who know that they are ready for a lifelong partnership

start to weed out the people who aren’t good for them. “Non-marriage material can be two things, Michel points out. “It can be the guy who you know you aren’t compatible with and you

know that in the light of day that you are never going to introduce him to your family. And it can also be someone in your life who you know is not looking for a commitment.

It’s perfectly ďŹ ne (and even healthy) to have a list of both essential traits and deal breakers in relationships. The trick is to know how to identify each of these characteristics. “When you are ready for marriage, you need a mate who values you,â€? says Michel. She says that her site allows users to list ďŹ ve “must haves,â€? ďŹ ve “like to havesâ€? and ďŹ ve “deal breakers.â€? “A deal breaker might be something like someone who is not family oriented,â€? she notes. “Something like he has to be 6-foot-2 is not.â€? Table those resolutions Maybe 2015 didn’t start off the way you intended – all the more reason for an indulgence. EVA KIS The first week of January is hard enough without having to stick to resolutions. But we make them, probably the same ones, probably to do with vague promises of healthier living, every year. That’s an awful lot of pressure to put on shoulders, which are generally used to hefting nothing heavier than a wine bottle. Whether you’ve already fallen off the resolution wagon or are just looking to indulge your senses before they’re obliterated once again by the freezing wind, we’ve rounded up some of the most decadent, resolution-busting dishes in the city.

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que Brooklyn

David Burke Kitchen A co-worker described the Toffee Monkey Bread ($23) as “ridiculously sticky sweet … I’m in danger of consuming, like, 2,000 calories in one sitting.” It’s served with banana caramel and maple pecan ice cream and technically meant for two, according to the menu, but we don’t think that’s enforced. 23 Grand St.

Hale and Hearty

Canadians possess a special kind of resilience to endure winter, and that resilience is called poutine. In Dino’s version ($7.95) the thick-cut fries deliver pulled pork and beef gravy ladled with pimento cheese into your comfort foodseeking maw. With that much insulation on your bones, you’ll barely need a sweater. 604 Union St. PROVIDED

Birds & Bubbles Fried chicken that’s crispy but not over-breaded, and more varieties of Champagne than you’ve got special occasions for.

Swine It’s the classiest way to say, “You know, good living doesn’t mean that food has to be green.” 100B Forsyth St.

At this carnivore’s emporium, get in touch with the primal voice inside that just knows you weren’t meant to live on kale

alone. Let the Roasted Bone Marrow, buttery and garlicky and served in a split bone, be your guide. 531 Hudson St.

Just in time for the cold weather’s arrival, Hale and Hearty Soups’ Chef Series is back. For 2015, four celebrity chefs created their own takes on the warming dish that will benefit not just your belly, but their chosen charities. Each limited-edition soup will be available for three weeks, with 10 percent of the proceeds going to the chef’s chosen cause.

True views Re: ‘Republicans contradict themselves’ (Metro, Jan. 6) A sincere question has no need to announce its sincerity and has behind it an honest desire to learn something. When you say that every day Republicans tell you “we must blindly trust big government,” I have to question your honesty. The exact opposite is the vast majority Republican/ conservative belief. In addition, conservatives in the main oppose the existence of public (government) unions (as did FDR due to inherent conflicts of interest) and only oppose private unions’ practices of forced membership and dues, not their right to exist. The police and the military are entrusted with the most important function of government: the safety and protection of the public at the expense of their own! They should not be unionized (previous point) but they should be respected and supported. You seemed to be trying to bash Republicans but your points were generalities. PETER HEALD, VIA EMAIL

A breakfast by any other name would be just as fattening Re: ‘How to eat healthy in the new year’ (Metro. us) Two questions: First, why would anyone over the age of 6 need directions to make a parfait? Put everything into a bowl — that must be very challenging for people to comprehend. And second: Why would you put a 454-calorie bowl of yogurt next to a page about “eating healthier in the new year”? You do realize that a bowl of yogurt (with chocolate and honey, yeah, that’s sensible) is the same amount of calories as two packs of Butterscotch Krimpets or a bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich, right? Might want to rename this one a parFAT. JENN MATRONE-CLARK, VIA EMAIL

Giants dump Fewell The Giants ďŹ red defensive coordinator Perry Fewell on Wednesday, calling the move a “restructuring of their defensive coaching sta,â€? according to ESPN. The Giants allowed the fourthmost yards per game in the NFL in 2014. Fewell, who had been with the Giants since 2010, had a big hand in the Giants’ 21-17 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.

Knicks likely aren’t done making deals NBA. Three players that Phil Jackson may decide to deal before the trade deadline. Now that the Knicks (5-32) have jettisoned J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert — and released center Samuel Dalembert — they’ve essentially rid themselves of any real thoughts of postseason play. Simply put, Phil Jackson ultimately decided that he’s already losing with guys who have bloated contracts. Why have them around to clog up the rotation? Might as well give more playing time to youngsters like Tim Hardaway Jr., Cole Aldrich, and Cleanthony Early. Jackson sent his two swingmen to Cleveland on Monday for two trade exceptions he has a year to use, a 2019 second-round pick, forward Lance Thomas ($948,000), an extra $6.4 million in 2015 cap space — and the aforementioned increased chance of nabbing a player like prized Duke center Jahlil Okafor with the No. 1 overall pick. By also waiving Dalembert, it saved the team an extra $2 million, meaning Knicks fans will see plenty of unknowns and journeymen on the Garden floor. Here’s a look at three players the Knicks could also move before the Feb. 19 trade deadline.

1

Andrea Bargnani He was brought to New York with such great promise, as his size (7-feet) was supposed to help stretch the floor all the way to the 3-point line. But he hasn’t been able to find his shooting stroke, and is always injured. Thus, he and his $12 million cap figure are very expendable.

that also included Dalembert and Aldrich. But he’s not a piece considered for the long haul in New York. And with a $3.3 million price tag, he’s also desirable cap-space trade bait.

3

Amar’e Stoudemire His expiring contract is the Holy Grail, because his numbers come off the books next season. But he’s also still good enough to help a contender because, when healthy, he’d be a great sixth-man. Stoudemire’s also consid-

ered a quality locker room guy. It’ll be difficult to find a taker for either him or Bargnani — especially since Jackson would only want draft picks or expiring contracts in return. But should the Knicks be able to pull off the impossible, all of this tanking and purging could be wellworth it if the summers of ’15 and ’16 pan out the way it’s being planned. A Wednesday morning announcement by the New York Red Bulls made oďŹƒcial the news reported by Metro late Tuesday night that head coach Mike Petke had been ďŹ red. “On behalf of the New York Red Bulls, I want to thank Mike for his service to the club these past two seasons as head coach,â€? Red Bulls sporting director Ali Curtis said in a statement released to the media. “Mike will always be an important member of the Red Bulls family.â€? Curtis has been with the Red Bulls less than a month, having been named sporting director in December. Petke, who in two years as head coach of the club delivered the Supporters Shield and took the team to within a game of the MLS Cup, was let go by the team on Tuesday. A team source told Metro that Curtis was the one who relieved Petke of his duties after the two met at Red Bull Arena. Petke made 169 appearances during two stints with the team as a player, then transitioned to a coaching role in 2011. KRISTIAN DYER
