New Gov. Charlie Baker takes Massachussetts reins New era. Baker began his term as Massachusetts governor Thursday with a speech that stressed accountability and efficiency. Charlie Baker was sworn in as the state’s 72nd governor early Thursday afternoon. Baker, in his first address as the state’s chief executive, told the packed House Chamber at the State House that Massachusetts needs to become more business friendly and efficient. He said he intends to streamline regulatory requirements for start-ups and small businesses. Residents shouldn’t have to wait for hours at the registry or be confused and let down by the state’s Health Connector, said Baker. “We’re nowhere near our full potential,” he said. Baker said he wants to ensure transparency in health care costs in the state. Similar health services for similar individuals can vary in cost by as much as 300 percent, he said. “This must change,” he said. The Swampscott Republican pledged to protect cities and towns from cuts to local aid funding, pushed to increase the number of Massachusetts charter schools — he said thousands of children are on waiting lists for such schools — and sympathized with the more than 1,500 homeless families in the state that are staying in temporary accommodations like hotels or motels.

“First, we must have courage to set partisanship aside and embrace the best ideas and solutions, no matter which side of the aisle they come from.
•
“Third, we must have integrity to assure accountability and transparency because when we make honest mistakes, they must be acknowledged and corrected.
•
“Second, we must have judgment to make our government as efficient, responsive and innovative as it can be.
•
“And finally, we must have dedication to serve the best interest of the public and only the public.”
“There’s no single initiative that can start and sustain a job-creating economy. But there is clear evidence that we’re too complex, too expensive, and too slow to move and make decisions. On this we must do better.” Baker
MBTA attack. Police search for suspect who assaulted bus driver, saying, ‘I’m going to kill you’ Transit police are searching for a man they say assaulted and threatened an MBTA bus driver on two separate occasions. MBTA officials have released surveillance images of the suspect, who allegedly spat on the driver of a Route 33 bus on the afternoon of Oct. 21 as it sat at the intersection of River Street and George Street in Boston.
It was not clear what prompted the assault. Two months later, on Dec. 18, the same man allegedly entered the Route 33 bus as it stopped on River Street in Hyde Park. According to transit police, the driver rec-
ognized the passenger as the man who had spat on him. “When the bus operator opened the bus doors, the depicted male subject attempted to board the bus. The bus operator, in fear, quickly shut the door as the male subject shouted, ‘When I see you again I’m going to kill you.’” The suspect is described as
a black man between 20 and 25 years old, with sandy brown hair. Anyone with information can contact transit police at 617-222-1050. The MBTA recently reported that assaults on drivers were down by 32 percent in 2014 compared to 2013. MORGAN ROUSSEAU
He said his top priorities are to close the state’s budget gap, which he said is more than $500 million, confront the state’s ongoing opiate addiction crisis, revitalize urban centers and close the education achievement gap. He invoked Massachusetts native John F. Kennedy, stressed the need for bipartisanship and said he wants to run a government that is transparent and accountable. “If we’re honest with ourselves, we can’t blame the deficit on lack of revenue. We have to recognize that this is a spending problem,” he said. Someone then yelled out from the chamber’s gallery, “Blame it on the former governor!” Baker said his administration would “hold the line on taxes.” “We’re already demanding enough from hardworking people,” he said. Baker defeated then-Attorney General Martha Coakley, a Democrat, by a margin of just under 2 percentage points, in the general election last November. He succeeds two-term Democrat Deval Patrick, who beat Baker in his first run for governor four years ago. Baker was sworn in, surrounded by his family — his wife Lauren and his children Charlie, AJ and Caroline — by new Senate President Stanley Rosenberg. GOP luminaries were in the crowd, including former Massachusetts Govs. Mitt Romney, William Weld and Jane Swift and current New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Temperatures dipped dangerously low Thursday — below freezing — and though expected to pick up this weekend, there is no end in sight for the painful chill that has struck the region. The Boston Public Schools canceled classes Thursday after Mayor Marty Walsh said the sub-zero wind chill made it too dangerous for school kids to wait for their buses. Thursday afternoon no announcement had been made on whether schools would reopen Friday, which may bring morning snow showers, gusty winds and a high near 29, according to The National Weather Service. Temperatures will hover in the mid-20s through Monday before rising into the mid-30s early next week. During this cold snap, city officials have are urging residents to look out for one another. “I’m personally asking each and every single Boston

Dunham’s a fan! So we noticed we made a little appearance in your book. I’m a big fan, I love to read Metro on the subway and it’s been a big part of my growing up in New York. Was there much consultation with the illustrator about that one? She’s one of my best friends from childhood, so I think she kind of just knew. I think she knew that if I were going to be hiding my face on the subway as a pretend spy, that Metro would probably be how I would do it. Plus, there’s the famous dudes who aggressively hand out Metros in the subway, thus ensuring that all New Yorkers read it, which I think is expert marketing, and really awesome.

Say goodbye to kombucha cafes and hipsters with handlebar mustaches. The new season of HBO’s “Girls” has two big changes in store for antihero Hannah Horvath. She’s not in New York, and she’ll be away from her friends for the first time in the show’s run. Hannah, who made the decision to attend an MFA program in Iowa at the end of last season, is now faced with a distant support system — this is, after all, the girl who even goes to the bathroom with her besties. Series creator Lena Dunham opens up about FOMO, real life boyfriend Jack Antonoff and finding love in your 20s. How will the dynamics between the girls change with Hannah in Iowa? Because of modern technology, as Adam says, there’s lots of FaceTiming and phone calling, but it is the first time they haven’t all been within a stone’s throw of each other. You definitely get a sense of what the friend group is like without Hannah in it. I kind of like it because usually you get such, like, “Why are these people friends with Hannah? She’s such a pain in the ass and she’s such a narcissist.” But once she’s absent, you see the role she’s playing in her friend group, and it’s lovely. Will she be experiencing some FOMO about her friends in NYC? For sure, there’s a lot of FOMO happening. Plus, I wouldn’t say she’s the most skilled at making new friends, so there’s that too. What’s the theme of the new season?
Growth and making adult decisions, but realizing that just because you make the right decision doesn’t mean you’re always going to get the right result.
also don’t think it’s necessary to find them, either. As someone who tweets prolifically, and is called the voice of a generation, how would you describe your generation in 140 characters? Not as apathetic as our stepdads think we are.
Do you think it’s possible to find lasting love in your 20s? It depends on who you are and what you want. I think we’re trained to think, especially women, that we’re either supLISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld posed to be joyfully, rabidly lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us single, or completely committed. There’s a lot of gray areas that can be very healthy to inhabit and I think it’s all about what works for you personally. I really like being in a committed relationship, and I’m really lucky that I found someone who really understands me and what I do. But I also have a lot of friends who seem like they have benefited wildly from being single in their 20s and that shouldn’t be denied either. I’m a big proponent of different strokes for different folks, but I definitely don’t think it’s impossible to find someone you’ll spend the rest of your life “I’M PROUD OF HANNAH. I MEAN, with, OBVIOUSLY ‘GETTING IT TOGETHER’ and I WOULD BE AN OVERSTATEMENT, BUT I’M IMPRESSED WITH HER BEHAVIOR.” /GETTY IMAGES

What should win the Golden Globes Awards predictions are dumb. Except when screamingly obvious, no one has a clue what will win, and such coverage is blatant clickbait. Not that mere opinion pieces are much more useful, but at least you get to talk about the quality of people’s work — and point to those who may be flying under the radar. Here’s who/what we hope will win Golden Globes this Sunday. MATT PRIGGE, NED EHRBAR AND LISA WEIDENFELD Best Actress, Drama
Julianne Moore, ‘Still Alice’ Oh man, is this the saddest movie: one where Moore, at her most personable, suffers mental deterioration via early Alzheimer’s. Not that it’s just a stunt.
Best Actor, Comedy or Musical
Ralph Fiennes, ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ Sure, everyone’s all about Michael Keaton in “Birdman” this year, but Fiennes’ finicky, philandering concierge easily outshines him. Best Actress, Comedy or Musical

Best Actor, Drama
Jake Gyllenhaal, ‘Nightcrawler’ There’s a lot of strong competition in this category, but the onetime Donnie Darko impresses most for his chilling (and very funny) embodiment of a driven freelancer as a sociopath. Best Director
Wes Anderson, ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ It can be easy to take the eccentric Anderson for granted, but this is work that, even more than usual, is both highly amusing and bottomlessly melancholy.
In an overstuffed ensemble that includes Meryl Streep, Blunt more than holds her own. And this gives us a chance to mention her equally awesome work in “Edge of Tomorrow.” You really should see “Edge of Tomorrow.” Best Supporting Actor
Edward Norton, ‘Birdman’ Sure, we have a sneaking suspicion that Norton is really just playing himself as the cocksure, self-centered Broadway thespian terrorizing Michael Keaton. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t still fantastic.

‘The Good Wife’ Procedurals are supposed to settle into patterns and not evolve too much as they age. Luckily, that is not a concept this show is familiar with. Years into its run, it’s still one of the best dramas on TV, and its characters continue to grow in organic, compelling ways. Best actor in a TV series, Drama
Dominic West, ‘The Affair’ Did you know the Emmys and Golden Globes never recognized West for “The Wire”? Let’s fix that. His performance in this Hamptons mystery/thriller/drama/romance is a good place to start.
for 12 years, this is a real, thoroughly realized portrayal of maternal and ultimately existential angst from a performer only getting better.

Review. ‘Red Hot’ fails to capture the real patriot Molly Ivins was an old-school, ultra-liberal journalist with a fondness for attacking anyone even slightly right of moderate with her pithy wit. A one-person show about the brazen Texan who lived among the good old boys she so freely criticized should be a hoot, no matter which side of the political fence you’re on. But “Red Hot Patriot: The KickAss Wit of Molly Ivins,” despite a decent production by the Lyric Stage Company, never quite captures the chutzpah that made Ivins both appealing and appalling enough to warrant her own show. The 75-minute piece takes place in a newsroom where Ivins plugs away at a story about her father, the authoritarian Republican thorn in her side. When the AP teletype machine rings (signifying an important story), highlights of Ivins’ own life and career spit out instead, beginning her trip down memory lane. Odds are, if the woman who loved to take swipes at any deserving offender lived to

Storylines to watch as Pats face Ravens
SPORTS
NFL Playoffs
A history of hatred Ravens defensive end Terrell Suggs makes no bones about it, he hates the Patriots. After Baltimore beat the Patriots in the 2012 AFC title game, Suggs shouted the following: “These are the most arrogant pricks in the world, starting from Belichick on down ... shut them out in the second half. Tell them to have fun at the Pro Bowl. Arrogant (expletive) ... Ever since Spygate they haven’t been able to win.” Suggs has been far from a choir boy on and off the field since entering the league in 2003. The former NFL defensive player of the year has been accused of multiple domestic violence incidents, one in which his girlfriend claimed that Suggs held her down on the floor, poured bleach on her and kicked her.

NFL Playoffs. The Patriots once again clash in the postseasonn with Baltimore. ore.
What would a trip to the postseason be without a visit from m the Ravens? The tough, in-your-face, very-easy-tohate Ravens. Baltimore is back for an AFC C divisional round game ame at Gillette Stadium on Saturday urday (4:35 p.m., NBC), and d the fact that the Ravens havee “been there, won that” in New ew England — twice — overr the last five seasons, gives some ome people cause for concern. rn. But Ray Lewis is isn’t walking through gh that door, folks. Ray Rice isn’t walking through that at door. The Ravens are a different team than they were the last time these two met in the playoffs. The Patriots are different too — and they’re better. So let’s get into what to watch for as the Patriots look to advance to their ninth AFC Championship Game under Bill Belichick.

Lonely island boy Being stranded on an island has got to be a very lonely time. It’s enough to make anybody go crazy. Luckily for Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr., he’s already a little crazy. That might come in handy for him on Saturday when Darrelle Revis looks to populate his island with one more sorry STEVE SMITH SR. IS SURE soul. Line ’em up We aren’t breaking any news here: The Patriots’ offensive line has been the biggest concern for this team all season. Has it improved since the start of the year? Absolutely. Then again, it couldn’t have gotten much worse from what we saw in September. Dan Connolly and Nate Solder appear healthy and ready to

Ravens receiver Steve Smith Sr. has 13,262 yards receiving in his 14-year NFL career. Smith registered the eighth 1,000-plus yard receiving campaign of his career this season in Baltimore as he caught 79 balls for 1,065 yards.
on words. He infamously told then-Patriots corner Aqib Talib to “Ice up, son!” after a game in which his Panthers beat the Patriots last season. Smith may finally be at a loss for words if Revis does end up on Smith exclusively. As for receiver Torrey Smith, Brandon Browner and Devin McCourty should be able to handle that. Joe Flacco has his work cut out for him.

go, and that’s a good thing because it won’t be easy to stop the likes of Haloti Ngata, Terrell Suggs (12 sacks) and Elvis Dumervil (17 sacks). Interestingly enough, Tom Brady was not sacked in the Patriots’ 28-13 loss in the playoff two years ago. That’s not to say the Baltimore defense didn’t disrupt him in that one as Brady had a 62.3 QB rating.
ROB GRONKOWSKI

Gronk, always the difference maker
The Patriots will take the bubble wrap off of Rob Gronkowski shortly before kick-off on Saturday, as he’s clearly the most important non-Brady piece to their offense. They didn’t have Gronk in last year’s postseason or in their loss to the Ravens in the 2012 AFC Championship Game. In fact, Gronkowski hasn’t played in a playoff game from beginning to end for the Patriots since New England’s loss in Super Bowl XLVI to the Giants — and even in that game he was banged up. Now, the tight end is believed to be fully healthy, and as we’ve all seen this season, poses huge issues for opposing defenders, some of which look more like bowling pins as Gronk rumbles down the field.
NFL Playoffs
Divisional round will also be rivalry weekend We’ve weeded out the crap as the playoffs inch closer to identifying the best team in the NFL. The divisional round kicks off Saturday afternoon and features three classic matchups and one David vs. Goliath game during arguably the best football weekend of the year. Here’s the slate: Panthers at Seahawks (-11) There hasn’t been a back-toback Super Bowl champion in 10 seasons, but the Seahawks have the matchup they want as
they begin their trek for No. 2 against the Panthers at 8:15 on FOX Saturday night. Seattle’s defense is scary good. Over the last six games of the season (all of them wins), the Seahawks allowed just three touchdowns, 39 total points and kept five of six opponents to seven points or less. They also did not allow a fourth-quarter touchdown. Cowboys at Packers (-6) Perhaps the marquee matchup of the weekend pits two offensive powers (both 12-4) against one another on the tundra of Lambeau Field. Tony Romo and the Cowboys pulled off a dramatic comeback win at home over the Lions a week
Cowboys may be able to keep pace. They averaged a leaguebest 34.4 points per game on the road, going 8-0 during the regular season.

ago, and look to slow down the Packers’ high powered (30.4 ppg) offense, well rested and itching for a fight. And though
the Dallas defense may not be particularly well-equipped to slow down Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense, the
Colts at Broncos (-7) Peyton Manning will host his Indianapolis replacement, Andrew Luck, in the final divisional contest (4:40 p.m. Sunday, CBS) in a rematch of a game won by the Broncos way back in Week 1, 31-24. Denver had 22 players listed on its injury report prior to its Week 17 win over Oakland, but the Broncos, with their 38-year-old quarterback, are feeling a bit more healthy heading into this game.
