Hate talk, vandalism don’t faze face of ‘Boo’ Transit. Richard Ruperto wants to raise awareness, acceptance, for young gay men.

Richard Ruperto never thought of himself as an activist for gay men of color. But when Ruperto walked into his subway station at 96th Street last month and saw a photo of him kissing Adonis Melendez on the forehead, he knew he had become more than just the boy who got beat up in school. “I feel like I accomplished something so huge,” Ruperto, 26, said. “I always thought of my-

self as someone to have a voice for the voiceless, and I always said to my family and friends, I want to be a person that brings awareness.” Gay Men’s Health Crisis started the subway ad campaign, called “I Love my Boo,” in 2010 as a way to promote acceptance of young black and Latino men. According to GMHC, the ads highlight their strength and resilience rather than sexualizing them, and brings awareness that three-quarters of new HIV diagnoses in New York City in 2013 were among black and Hispanic men and women. “This is an awfully challenging time in this country relating to racism,” said Kelsey Louie, CEO of GMHC.

Visit Metro.us to read more about LGBT issues in New York City. Louie is a member of the state task force to end AIDS, and believes the goal of reducing new HIV infections to 750 annually by 2020 is challenging, but can be accomplished. Since the citywide campaign launched in midDecember, GMHC says a handful of the 260 posters have been torn down and defaced. Then, just before the new year, a video start-

ed circulating on social media. “This is why n****** thinking it’s OK to be f***** gay. Nah, I ain’t ignoring this s***, bro,” a man’s voice — angry, young, urban — says while filming the poster featuring Ruperto. “This is what they got for the public to see, for little kids to walk past to see,” the angry voice said. “It brought me back to being from Harlem, transferring from school to school,” Ruperto said of the video. “I’ve been stabbed, jumped so many times, and I used to live in fear. Now I’m in a better place.” Despite the hateful videos and defaced subway ads, Ruperto’s proud to help “shift people’s beliefs.”

Bye-bye clamshell. Polystyrene containers banned from the city

Halal no! Styrofoam containers got to go. / MILES DIXON, METRO

The ubiquitous Styrofoam clamshell, famous for holding molecovered enchiladas and halal meat with white sauce over rice, will no longer fill the garbage pails of New York. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a ban Thursday on single-use foam containers, saying

they can’t be recycled. He added that banning them will help save the environment, knocking some 30,000 tons of expanded polystyrene foam — aka Styrofoam — from the city’s waste every year. New York becomes the largest municipality to ban foam, despite

some attempts to make it the largest to recycle them. The ban begins July 1, with a six-month grace period before city agencies enforce the law, and warnings issued instead of fines throughout 2016. CHESTER JESUS SORIA AND CATHARINA THEUMBLING

NYPD slow. Arrest slump hits City’s lawyers and bail bondsmen

FREE

1 /2 Hour Massage & Consultation

A sharp drop in arrests and fines in New York is already hurting some traffic lawyers and bail bonds firms, whose phones are ringing less often as fewer people are in trouble and need help. The slump in arrest volume — last week’s total was around half that recorded a year ago — is seen by supporters of Mayor Bill de Blasio as evidence of a work slowdown by cops angry at comments he made that they viewed as antipolice. Police unions deny there’s a slowdown. “We’re seeing less phone calls, less emails, less faxes from people with tickets that are newly issued, said New York traffic lawyer Matthew Weiss. “It started at the beginning of the year. Revenues for his New York City traffic ticket business — including moving violations and criminal matters — are

down roughly 30 percent to 40 percent since the end of December. With arrests down to 2,401 in the week ending

Sunday from 5,448 a year earlier, and parking and driving-related tickets down 90 percent, some bail bond firms are worried. “It’s been very slow, said Miguel Rodrigues, co-owner of David Jakab Bail Bonds in Chinatown. “I would be concerned if it goes for a month. Empire Bail Bonds, which has offices around New York including in Queens and Brooklyn, said business was down about 50 percent since Christmas. “Empire is very large and can withstand the bump ... but your average mom-and-pop shop can’t, said Empire Bail Bonds president Michelle Esquenazi. NYC braces for more winds, snow Weather. The coldest day of the week is behind us, meteorologist says. As cold temperatures and dry air continued on Thursday, New York City is now expecting to see a snow shower on Friday morning. Fortunately, the weekend won’t be as cold as Wednesday night, when the temperatures dipped to 8 degrees, and the wind made it feel like minus-10 degrees, said David Stark, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. The lower than freezing temperatures and wintry weather haven’t affected subways or buses yet, said MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz. The National Weather Service is expecting about a half inch of snow Friday morning. A snow alert has been issued by

the Department of Sanitation in case salt needs to be spread, or if plows are needed. Sanitation workers are expecting a light snowfall. Trash collection and alternate side parking are in effect Friday. Winds as high as 40 mph will blow through on Friday afternoon, and the thermometer will rise just above 30 degrees. The weekend is expected to be dry and milder. Saturday will be breezy, but the winds won’t be as severe as what’s expected Friday. The temperatures will continue to climb up to the mid-30s on Sunday, which is seasonally average, Stark said. Thursday’s extreme cold caused the Bryant Park foundation to freeze over for the first time this year. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

PATH interrupted PATH train service between Hoboken and 33rd Street is back online after officials said a rail line broke early Thursday. The cause of the break is unknown and will be determined in the evening, a Port Authority spokeswoman said, but that cold temperatures could have cause the damage. Riders were back on their way between New Jersey and Manhattan with residual delays by early afternoon. The spokeswoman said the rail wouldn’t be fully repaired until late Thursday, but added any work wasn’t expected to interfere with nighttime ridership. CHESTER JESUS SORIA

Manhunt for attackers. Armed French forces swoop in on villages Armed and masked antiterrorism police swooped on woodland villages northeast of Paris on Thursday in a manhunt for two brothers suspected of being the Islamist gunmen who killed 12 people at a French satirical weekly. A day after the Paris attack, officers carried out house-to-house searches in the village of Corcy, a few miles from a service station where police sources said the brothers were sighted in ski masks. Helicopters flew overhead. The fugitive suspects are French-born sons of Algerian-born parents, both in their early 30s, and already under police surveillance. One was jailed for 18 months for trying to travel to Iraq a decade ago to fight as part of an Islamist cell. Police said they were “armed and dangerous.” Searches were taking place in Corcy and the

nearby village of Longpont, set in thick forest and boggy marshland north of Paris, but it was not clear whether the fugitives who had been spotted in the area were holed up or had moved on. “We have not found them, there is no siege,” an interior ministry official in Paris said. Corcy residents looked bewildered as heavily armed policemen in ski masks and helmets combed the village from houses to garages and barns. REUTERS

Women in charge

Who are some other young women who are impressing you right now? Oh my god, there’s so many. Ilana [Glazer] and Abbi [Jacobson] from “Broad City” were just at our premiere the other night. I love them, I think they’re incredible. I just wrote a massive fan letter to Leslie Jamison, the author of “The Empathy Exams,” who is far younger than she should be, considering how much wisdom is passed into that book. My friend Ashley Ford is a writer at Buzzfeed who writes beautiful essays about gender and sexuality and race in America.

I’m a big fan, I love to read Metro on the subway and it’s been a big part of my growing up in New York.

Was there much consultation with the illustrator about that one? She’s one of my best friends from childhood, so I think she kind of just knew. I think she knew that if I were going to be hiding my face on the subway as a pretend spy, that Metro would probably be how I would do it. Plus, there’s the famous dudes who aggressively hand out Metros in the subway, thus ensuring that all New Yorkers read it, which I think is expert marketing, and really awesome.

“Girls” returns this Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO. For more with Dunham, including what’s in store for the other girls, head to www.metro.us. /MARK SCHAFER, HBO

Interview. In the new season of Lena Dunham’s “Girls,” Hannah Horvath gets it together...kind of. Say goodbye to kombucha cafes and hipsters with handlebar mustaches. The new season of HBO’s “Girls,” premiering Sunday, has two big changes in store for antihero Hannah Horvath. She’s not in New York, and she’ll be away from her friends for the first time in the show’s run. Hannah, who made the decision to attend a prestigious MFA program in Iowa at the end of last season, is now faced with

a distant support system — this is, after all, the girl who even goes to the bathroom with her besties. Series creator, actor and director Lena Dunham opens up about FOMO, her real life boyfriend Jack Antonoff and finding love in your 20s. How will the dynamics between the girls change with Hannah in Iowa? Because of modern technology, as Adam says, there’s lots of FaceTiming and phone calling, but it is the first time they haven’t all been within a stone’s throw of each other. You definitely get a sense of what the friend group is like without Hannah in it. I kind of like it because usually you get such, like, “Why are these people friends with Hannah? She’s such a pain in the ass and she’s such a narcissist.” But once she’s absent, you see the role she’s playing in her friend group, and it’s lovely, actually. Will she be experiencing some FOMO about her ffriends in NYC? FFor sure, there’s a lot of FFOMO happening. Plus, I wouldn’t say she’s the most skilled at making m new friends, so there’s n that too.

CREDIT: JOANA AVILLEZ FROM LENA DUNHAM’S “NOT THAT KIND OF GIRL”

W What’s the theme of tthe new season? Growth and making G aadult decisions, but

realizing that just because you make the right decision doesn’t mean you’re always going to get the right result. Where do things stand with Adam and Hannah? In the first episode, they haven’t broken up because what I wanted to kind of depict is, in your 20s, in all relationships, you have these massive, earthshattering fights and then you kind of just pick up and keep moving. There’s a certain amount of compartmentalizing we do, and so really what she’s dealing with is what is her relationship with Adam going to be? And what’s it going to mean when they’re separated? They’re in that weird limbo that exists where you don’t quite understand whether you’re meant to work it out or whether you’re meant to call it quits. Do you think it’s possible to find lasting love in your 20s? It depends on who you are and what you want. I think we’re trained to think, especially women, that we’re either supposed to be joyfully, rabidly single, or completely committed. There’s a lot of gray areas that can be very healthy to inhabit and I think it’s all about what works for you personally. I really like being in a committed relationship,

10

and I’m really lucky that I found someone who really understands me and what I do. But I also have a lot of friends who seem like they have benefited wildly from being single in their 20s and that shouldn’t be denied either. I’m a big proponent of different strokes for different folks, but I definitely don’t think it’s impossible to find someone you’ll spend the rest of your life with, and I also don’t think it’s necessary to find them, either. As someone who tweets prolifically, and is called the

Jeffrey Tambor, ‘Transparent’ This might be a first: a man winning for playing a woman. And Tambor is doing some of the best work of his career.

Best Supporting Actor

Ralph Fiennes, ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ Sure, everyone’s all about Michael Keaton in “Birdman” this year, but Fiennes’ finicky, philandering concierge in the latest Wes Anderson easily outshines him.

Edward Norton, ‘Birdman’ Sure, we have a suspicion that Norton is really just playing himself as the cocksure, self-centered Broadway thespian terrorizing Michael Keaton. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t still fantastic.

Making something Interview. Rapper Wale wants to email you, seriously. Just before Thanksgiving, D.C.-based rapper Wale squashed a highly publicized feud with Complex and covered the music magazine’s December issue alongside longtime mentor and muse Jerry Seinfeld — yes, that Jerry Seinfeld. A month later, he released “Festivus, a free eight-song mixtape that’s merely his latest homage to Seinfeld’s iconic sitcom. We talked to the oft-misunderstood rapper as he put the finishing touches on his upcoming fourth album, “The Album About Nothing, a play on the “Show About Nothing. He told us about connecting with fans outside of social media and what

out of ‘Nothing’ he’s gained from hanging out with Seinfeld. You’ve had a roller coaster few months, from changing your management to having to get emergency surgery in November. How do you feel going into 2015? I feel good. I’m anxious right now. Sometimes the plight of the artist in any avenue is just not being fully understood. The connection from one heart to the world’s heart is sometimes lost in translation and that’s the only frustrating part of my job. You’ve mentioned wanting to get off social media and interact with fans through email, open letters, and of course, music. Why? I really want to empower my fans and empower the responsible media. I don’t think I need to elaborate on what responsible media is because there’s a lot

of irresponsible people with a lot of power in media. There’s a lot of politics and kissing this person’s butt and positioning this and that and the third. It’s draining, man. The people used to have the power, but we submitted it to people. Like, I can’t dunk, so I shouldn’t be able to judge the dunk contest. I should form an opinion, but I shouldn’t be the gatekeeper of who the best dunker in the world is. You’re working with Jerry Seinfeld on your new album, and Jerry himself appears in Chris Rock’s “Top Five,” where he lists you as one of his top five favorite rappers of all time. What does that do for your confidence? He’s been given the opportunity to listen to my newest stuff. He was a fan of my music, but I think the newest stuff that we’ve done for “The Album About Nothing” is miles ahead. I catapulted myself

A TRULY GREAT AMERICAN FILM.

‘Selma’ isn’t just a biopic – it celebrates community action. By seeing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through the prism of one crucial event, the film offers a rousing portrait of a born preacher not without sin. It’s in the quiet moments of humor, heartbreak, and stabbing self-doubt that we see a man in full.” PETER TRAVERS

ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL FILMS OF THE YEAR .

A reminder of what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. did for this country. David Oyelowo is magnificent. Director Ava DuVernay brilliantly uses a micro event as a way into a larger, more compelling macro story. ‘Selma’ arrives with a raw-nerve urgency and timeliness that no one could have anticipated.” CHRIS NASHAWATY

Review

‘Something, Anything’ ••••• Young Margaret (Ashley Shelton) is on the road towards the picket fenceand-kids existence when she suffers a miscarriage that drives her to drop everything in her life and start anew. The lowdown: Margaret’s journey isn’t an “Eat. Pray. Love.” self-love-fest, and not just because she never comes close to finding her own Javier Bardem. In fact, the route she takes is less about finding one’s self than one of subtraction, gradually

eliminating everything that defined her: her husband, her home, her job, her cellphone. (Her swapping out for an actual landline might be more shocking than her divorce.) Unlike Margaret, writer-director Paul Harrill isn’t out to reinvent the wheel, and his script can feel like plot points taken from a self-help book. But his direction is as quiet and patient as Margaret herself. Her search for the self is inspiring and scary, not just because it’s not clear where she will land, but also because her stubbornness seems both positive and, for others, harmful. MATT PRIGGE

Sci-fi. ‘Predestination’ mixes twists, ideas and one great breakthrough performance Ethan Hawke plays a time cop out to stop a terrorist before he unleashes one of his biggest historical attacks. His investigations lead him to meet a man who’s actually a former woman (played by Sarah Snook), who relates a bizarre backstory. The lowdown: Like “Primer” and “Looper,” “Predestination” is a time-travel movie that doesn’t look or sometimes even feel like a time-travel movie. Much of its first half unfolds in a dive bar. It’s not afraid to be (temporarily) confusing, but more importantly it’s not afraid to feel like different kinds of movies. One might spend the first half wondering why so much time is spent on an wild backstory that appears unrelated bit to the power to jump through decades. Identical twin filmmakers Michael and Peter Spierig (of “Daybreakers,” also starring Hawke)

know they have a crazy story, and much of “Predestination” exploits how audiences will simply want to know where this is going. They can be sloppy. At least a couple major twists aren’t well concealed. Hawke, who has matured into a lively presence, is not really given a character so much as a pawn to be moved around by the script.

Snook, though, is given a real character, or characters, and hers is a true breakthrough role. She radiates an Emma Stone-look as a woman and vaguely womanish as a man, but hers is no stunt performance. She has a haunted presence no matter what gender she is, and she grounds a film that intends to be — and excels at being — fragmented. MATT PRIGGE

Marriage: Is divorce the ‘new black’? If you read the latest studies, more couples than ever are separating. Is marriage a dead institution, or is there something else? The notion that marriage is a temporary arrangement isn’t new. Sociologist and futurist Alvin Toffler wrote the best-selling “Future Shock” in 1970, in which he noted the rising trend of “trial” or “temporary marriages” — first marriages of young people, lasting three months to three years — and of “serial marriages.” Toffler’s observations hold true today. And not only are the adults in these relationships causing themselves heartache and challenge, but they are also showing their children what a temporary relationship looks like. Not a pretty picture for our up-and-coming generation.

What can be done There’s no magic to “cure” these relationship issues. But there are some things

For exclusive commentary, c visit Metro.us/blogs. The numbers From the U.S. Census and the Association of Divorce Reform:

If you give yourself up for your relationship, you’re setting it up for failure.

that people might consider before tying the knot:

know yourself: Who you are and where you’re going.

Be ready. Why get into a committed relationship unless you’re ready? There is no cardinal rule stating that people must get married by a certain date — or at all! Before taking the leap, it’s not only important to know your partner, it’s perhaps even more important to

Don’t give up your individuality. People who put everything into their relationships and leave nothing back for themselves are setting themselves up for failure. Maintain your own life, interests and friendships, and then share with your significant other.

Put effort, not work, into your marriage/relationship. I’ve long suggested that a successful relationship or marriage takes effort, not work. Oftentimes, “work” is that thing you must do in order to have time and flexibility for the things you really want to do. In short, “effort” is a driving force behind a great partnership and marriage.

19.5 million adults have been divorced at least once.

50 percent of all marriages end in divorce within five years.

Of the couples that last five years, only half make it to their 10th wedding anniversary. That’s a 75 percent divorce rate before the 10th anniversary.

Over 80 percent of divorcees reference “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for separation.

GOSSIP So that thing Russell Crowe said about older actresses being able to find work if they’re honest about their age? Yeah, naturally women are reacting. First, Meryl Streep came out in support of Crowe. “He was talking about himself,” Streep said. “I agree with him. It’s good to live within the place where you are.” I’m not going to try to unpack that statement because, yikes, but I will challenge Ms. Streep on the assertion that Crowe was talking about himself, since all his quotes were literally about women — including Streep herself, whom he cites as a positive example. Less supportive? Jessica Chastain. While speaking with reporters at the National Board of Review Awards in New York, Chastain didn’t mince words. “Russell keeps getting his foot stuck in his mouth,” she said. “There are some incredible actresses in their 50s and 60s that are not getting opportunities in film, and for someone to say that there are plenty of roles for women that age, [that] is not someone who’s going to the movie theater.”

Pit Bull has his eyes on J.Lo Everyone knows the first step to successfully wooing a woman in this modern age is telling anyone who will listen about how much you dig her — and revealing your ideas for a couple nickname. At least that’s what Pit Bull has been doing, telling everyone except Jennifer Lopez about how much he digs Jennifer Lopez. “He’s always considered her to be his ideal type — curvy,

talented and Latina,” a source tells Life & Style, quoting what I assume is on Lopez’s business cards. “He’s never made a move because she’s always been linked with someone — first Marc Anthony, then Casper Smart. But now he’s telling pals that he and J.Lo could be the next Brangelina. He’s even come up with their mash-up name: Pit-Lo.” Aim high, buddy.

Not in his name More than a dozen people were killed in a terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo, in Paris, France. This magazine is known to have printed controversial material in the past regarding Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. As a Muslim belonging to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, we condemn the killing of innocents in the name of Islam. This attack and those who carried out this heinous crime have nothing to do with Islam as the Quran clearly states, “the killing of one ... is like the killing of all mankind” (5:33). We condemn the perpetrators in the strongest of terms and extend our condolences to the bereaved.

Be considerate in polite society Let me first say that I do not condone violence for any reason except personal self-defense. I must say, however, that those who are in positions where they have great access to the general public are obliged to carefully consider the sacred beliefs of others; those whose beliefs may be quite different than their own. Everything has limits in a polite society, including art and self-expression. LEWIS WALSH, VIA EMAIL

Divisional playoffs boast classic rivals NFL playoffs. The Patriots host a familiar foe while the Cowboys prep for an all-time great clash of NFC powers. We’ve weeded out the pretenders as the playoffs inch closer to identifying the best team in the NFL. The divisional round kicks off Saturday afternoon and features three classic matchups and one David vs. Goliath game (Carolina vs. Seattle). One of these elite eight teams will hoist the Lombardi Trophy Feb. 1 in Arizona, but it still appears to be anyone’s guess as to which team will win three more games and take home the crown. Ravens at Patriots (-7) These two teams are the best in the playoffs since 2000, and they tango for the fourth time in six postseasons Saturday afternoon at 4:35 on NBC. New England has an 18-8 playoff record over the last 15 seasons, best in the NFL, while Baltimore has the second-best mark, 15-7. Tom Brady and the Pats are coming off their fifth-straight first-round bye and look to handle a hot Ravens squad, fresh off a convincing win over the Steelers last week.

Panthers at Seahawks (-11) There hasn’t been a back-to-back Super Bowl champion in 10 seasons, but the Seahawks have the matchup they want as they begin their trek for Title No. 2 against the Panthers Saturday night at 8:15 on FOX. Seattle’s defense is scary good. Over the last six games (all of them wins), the Seahawks

allowed just three touchdowns, 39 total points and kept five of six opponents to seven points or less. They also did not allow a fourth-quarter touchdown. Cowboys at Packers (-6) Perhaps the marquee matchup of the Divisional Round pits two offensive powers (both 12-4) against one another on the tundra of Lambeau Field. Tony

Romo and the Cowboys pulled off a dramatic comeback win at home over the Lions a week ago, and look to slow down a Packers’ offense (30.4 ppg) that’s well rested. Colts at Broncos (-7) Peyton Manning will host his Indianapolis replacement, Andrew Luck, in the final divisional match, Sunday at 4:40 p.m. on CBS. The Broncos were able to compile the conference’s second-best record and earned a much-needed first round bye. Denver had 22 players listed on the injury report in Week 17. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn may be their top choice, but no decision has been made by the Jets organization as far as who their next head coach will be. On Thursday morning, Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com said in a radio interview on the “Dan Patrick Show” that he believes that Quinn will be hired by the Jets and that the Seahawks defensive coordinator has already started reaching out to potential members of his coaching staff. But a team source tells Metro that no decision has been made on Quinn or any other head coach candidates. “The process is ongoing” the source said. The team is not ready yet to make a decision, according to the source, and the process will continue for Quinn as well as all the other candidates. Quinn is seen as one of the frontrunners for the position to replace Rex Ryan A league source did tell Metro that Quinn had a strong interview and that he is “a very solid candidate for the job.” KRISTIAN DYER
