As the world reels from last week’s vicious attacks in Paris that left 17 people dead and in the wake of an unsettling cyber hack of the U.S. military’s Central Command Monday by Islamic State sympathizers, cities across the United States beefed up national security including Boston. Increased security patrols and screenings were in place Tuesday at Boston’s Logan International Airport following an announcement by U.S.

Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh C. Johnson outlining the Transportation Security Administration’s bump in the number of random searches of passengers and carry-on luggage boarding aircraft at U.S. airports. At Logan, travelers met the news with shrugs. “It can’t hurt,” said Arthur Hanson, a 38-year-old field technician from West Bridgewater, who was headed to Las Vegas. “I travel all the time and I don’t see any difference. It’s America, so of course you feel safe. Why wouldn’t you feel safe?” Tracy Andrews, a 43-yearold taxi driver from Peabody, thought the beefed up security was an overreaction. “Travel is difficult enough,” she said. “I don’t think it’s necessary.”

The Medford sculptor who designed the frog sculptures on Boston Common is suing Macy’s, saying the retail giant unlawfully copied his amphibian art. David Phillips designed six frog sculptures in and around the Frog Pond and nearby playground on Boston Common in 2003. In March of that year, Phillips registered the sculptures with the copyright office. Now in a federal complaint, Phillips is alleging Macy’s copied his “fishing frog sculpture” without his permission or authority and placed a facsimile of the statue in the Christmas window display facing Summer Street in its downtown Boston store. Phillips, who is being represented by Andrew D. Epstein of Boston’s Barker, Epstein & Loscocco, is seeking a court injunction that would force Macy’s from using the sculpture for any purposes. His attorney enclosed photos of the two sculptures with the complaint. He is also seeking damages “up to and including $150,000.” Macy’s declined to comment for this story Tuesday. METRO

Boston. Uber teams up with city for data sharing

Uber ride share app. NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

Ride-hailing app Uber has launched a first-of-its-kind partnership with Boston that aims to help guide the growth of the city’s development through the release of travel data. Uber approached city officials Thursday with an offer to share their data, Boston Chief Information Officer

Jascha Franklin-Hodge told Metro. Throughout the yearlong partnership, quarterly reports will shed light on the amount of time passengers spend in Uber cars, as well as zip codes traveled in and the dates and times of the trips. All the information will be anonymous, according to Uber.

“Historically we have not received very much of this type of data,” said FranklinHodge. “This will allow us to get a much clearer view of roadway performance. It’s a useful tool as the city grows and changes. It allows us to see the flow of people and understand better the move-

ment patterns shaping the city we live in.” The company offered the data free to Boston, said Taylor Bennett, a spokesman for the company, said the initiative is to demonstrate that Uber is “a fundamental part” of the region’s transportation system. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

Tsarnaev lawyers want trial delay Lawyers for accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev filed papers Tuesday night in federal court seeking to suspend jury selections in his case by one month in light of recent terror attacks in France. In the court filing, attorneys said the delay would “allow some time for the extraordinary prejudice flowing from these events — and the comparison of those events to those at issue in this case — to diminish.” On Jan. 7, the third day of jury selection in Tsarnaev’s case, Islamic terrorists killed 12 people at the Charlie Hebdo magazine offices in Paris. A policewoman and four hostages were later killed in the aftermath. Tsarnaev, 21, has pleaded not guilty to carrying out the deadly 2013 terror attack that killed three people and injured 264 others. Olympics opponents to meet to discuss the perils of hosting Discussion. The organizers of No Boston Olympics want to educate the public on games’ true cost. A group opposed to Boston’s bid for hosting the 2024 Summer Games will hold its first meeting tonight, ushering in members of the public who not only support their cause, but are undecided on the issue. No Boston Olympics organizer Christopher Dempsey said the meeting, which will be held at 6 p.m. at First Church in Boston, will focus on reasons backing up the group’s stance that hosting the Olympics in Boston would wreak financial havoc on the region and deflect from a need to invest in the state’s health care, education and

transportation systems. “We aren’t naysayers or cynics,” said Dempsey. “We want people who haven’t made up their minds yet to join us; people who have great pride in Boston.” The event will also feature remarks by Smith College Professor of Economics Andrew Zimbalist, whose book “Circus

Maximus: The Economic Gamble Behind Hosting the Olympics and World Cup” is due to hit shelves this month. The event is free and open to the public. Dempsey said he expects a strong turnout. A request for comment from Boston 2024, the group behind the local Olympic push, was not returned as of deadline. Boston 2024 was criticized for not hosting public meetings before the city was selected as the U.S. bid city, though they will join city officials at a series of monthly Citizens Advisory Group meetings in coming months. The meetings are meant to solicit feedback and create “a long, robust and productive conversation” with residents in the Greater Boston area, according to Boston 2024’s website. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

The other contenders Boston has some competition in its bid for the Olympics. Other cities said to be interested in hosting the 2024 Games include: •

Rome, Italy: The Italian capital has hosted the Summer Games once before, in 1960.

Paris, France: The French capital hosted the Olympics in 1900 and 1924.

Istanbul, Turkey: Turkey’s largest city has never hosted the Games and lost out on the 2020 bid.

Doha, Qatar: This Middle Eastern city of 1.3 million has never hosted the Games.

Germany: Either Berlin, the German capital or Hamburg, a large port city.

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh gave his first State of the City Tuesday night, touting the city’s success in getting a record number of guns off the streets, slashing the unemployment rate to the lowest its been in eight years and attracting the world’s attention by securing the U.S. Olympic bid. “I’m pleased to report the state of our city is strong and getting stronger. Our economy is flourishing and many more people are working,” said Walsh during his remarks at Boston Symphony Hall last night. After first acknowledging last week’s deadly terror attack in Paris, Walsh paid respects to two fallen firefighters who were killed in a Back Bay blaze in March. He also paid homage to former Mayor Thomas Menino, who died in October. Walsh said in 2014, the city took 1,061 guns off the streets — the most ever — paved 60 miles of roads and filled over 19,000 potholes, 50 percent more than the

Walsh took aim the city’s public education system, saying families deserved not to be let down by its schools. “I’m proud of what we have accomplished, but I’m far from satisfied. Charlie Hebdo to publish a Muhammad cartoon on cover New issue. One Paris newspaper vendor said he had received 200 advance orders for Charlie Hebdo. Charlie Hebdo will publish a front page showing a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad holding a sign saying “Je suis Charlie” in its first edition since Islamist gunmen attacked the satirical newspaper and killed 12 people. With demand surging for the edition due today, the weekly planned to print up to 3 million copies, dwarfing its usual run of 60,000, after news agents reported a rush of orders. Digital versions will be posted in English, Spanish and Arabic, while print editions in Italian and Turkish will also appear. In a parliamentary session Prime Minister Manuel

Leonardo DiCaprio and Rihanna? Sure, why not.

CULTURE

Leonardo DiCaprio and Rihanna were spotted living it up together at a recent Playboy Mansion party, which admittedly sounds like a game of Hollywood gossip Mad Libs. But when it comes to how intimate they were getting, we’re left with a different game all together: dueling anonymous sources. One such source claims that DiCaprio and Rihanna were being incredibly flirty, going so far as locking lips at the soiree. But another? “No one was making out. They are just friends. That’s it,” the second source tells E! News. “There was a big group dancing. Tom Hardy, Naomi Campbell and a bunch of other people. Everyone was having a good time together. Maybe a little bit of friendly flirting but no scandal here.” Oh, you’re no fun.

Everyone has goals, dreams, items on their bucket list, things they really want to do. For newly minted Golden Globe winner, Billy Bob Thornton that includes Jennifer Aniston. Thornton did a bit of an over-share backstage at the Globes when Access Hollywood challenged him to a game of Would You Rather, pitting celebrities against each other to vie for the “Fargo” star’s amorous attention. When asked to choose between Reese Witherspoon and Aniston, Thornton quickly replied, “Jennifer Aniston, lifelong goal. That’s all I’m saying.” And, I mean, a simple yes or no would sufficed. But it’s good to know that he and Brad Pitt have such consistently similar tastes.

The nice thing about all these celebrities having lifestyle websites is that they can handle all their big life announcements themselves. Much like Blake Lively did last October on Preserve, “New Girl” star Zooey Deschanel has used Hello Giggles to reveal that she is pregnant. Deschanel and boyfriend Jacob Pechenik are expecting their first child together this summer. “Jacob and I are over the moon. We are so excited to meet our little one,” Deschanel says in a statement. As of press time, there was no word on how chunky the baby’s bangs would eventually be.

They’ve signed up Woody Allen to write and direct a series for the service, his first foray into television (not counting 1971’s never-aired PBS movie “Men of Crisis: The Harvey Wallinger Story”). Like pretty much everything else he’s done in the last decade, the series is currently called “Untitled Woody Allen Project.” In a statement, Allen says, “I don’t know how I got into this. I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that [Amazon VP] Roy Price will regret this.” We’ll see!

FILM

Chris Hemsworth: From superhero to super-hacker Interview. The ‘Avengers’ star turns cyber-sleuth in ‘Blackhat.’ But that doesn’t mean he’s not in great shape. When you hire the guy who plays Thor in “The Avengers” to be the lead hacker in your cyber-security drama, you kind of have to accept the fact that he’s going to be one of those rare hackers in really good shape. But Michael Mann wanted it to at least be a little plausible that Chris Hemsworth’s superhuman physique could belong to an expert coder. Luckily, we meet Hathaway, Hemsworth’s character in “Blackhat,” while he’s behind bars, doing time for scads of computer crimes — and also doing a lot of push-ups. “Once I’m done with Thor, I get rid of that bulk and that size because that just sort of screams that character,” Hemsworth explains. “Me and Mi-

chael talked about the time he’d spent in prison. You go in one person and come out another, and through those experiences he was going to physically be able to handle himself.” And being able to pull that off meant more than the usual post-Thor slim-down. “I wanted to do more with my training than just running on the treadmill and trying to get rid of the weight,” he explains. “I’ve boxed a lot in the past and done a lot of Muay Thai.” Of course, hitting the gym wasn’t the only training Hemsworth had to undergo. He also had to pass muster behind a keyboard, something that was much more foreign to him. So time spent with the cybersecurity experts hired for the film — some of them former black-hat hackers themselves — proved invaluable. “I was pretty limited in my digital, cyber involvement. And it fascinated me,” he says. “I remember asking one of the guys, I said, ‘Knowing what you know’ — because it became evident pretty quick that the majority of us knew noth-

ing compared to what these guys knew — ‘do you look at the world differently? Do you feel you have an upper hand?’ And he just started laughing. He said, ‘Man, people have no idea how exposed they are and vulnerable and what’s possible.’” Luckily these people are on the side of good. “They’re the guys that are the superheroes, you know?” Hemsworth says. “That sort of highly intelligent, alien-type advancement that these guys seem to have within themselves was something that every day impressed me.” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

Also impressive for Hemsworth? Mann’s insistence of shooting on location, in authentic places — a mandate that took him to Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Hong Kong. “You could shoot on the backlot in L.A. somewhere, in some parking lot and mock it up on a green screen, which I’ve had plenty of over the years. But you have a visceral, physical response to being in those places,” he explains. “The sights and sounds and

smells just bring something out of you, and you’re not having to fake or imagine that it’s there. It becomes as much of an actor — something you bounce off — as the other people you’re working with. That was such a treat, to work in those places, which are loud and noisy. A lot of the time I remember the sound guy was worried about, ‘We can’t shoot this, it’s too much noise,’ and Michael was just, ‘No, no, keep going, this is great.’”

The buzz returns for 3 local ’hoods Real estate. New developments and new transit options are making these three spots the most popular around Boston. After years of sitting on the edge of gentrification — or up-trending — three Boston neighborhoods are finally seeing home prices nudge upwards. No surprises which ones though: Allston, Brighton, and Somerville’s Union Square were buzz ‘hoods for a while, but with the housing crash the buzz turned to zzzz. In 2015, the buzz is back. “In Allston and Brighton, there’s been an explosion of development activity, including huge projects like Boston Landing, which includes New Balance’s new headquarters and sports complex, says Michael DiMella, managing partner at the Back Bay-based Charlesgate Realty Group and president of the Greater Boston Association

in the foundation of the United States, though of course throughout history it has been forgotten and countless dissenters have become political prisoners or martyrs. Of course, one cannot expect to say anything they please without consequence, but their life and liberty should not be at stake. In Tuesday’s Metro, he suggested that this principle should have been extended to the authors of the French newspaper who were tragically killed last week, and I of course concur that they should not have died.

Re: ‘Don’t be afraid to speak freely’ (Metro, Jan. 13) I agree with letter writer Frederick R. Bedell Jr. that our society needs a constant reminder of famous sentiment: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” That notion is embedded

I believe I must have missed the disclaimer on his letter, though, where that same right to freedom of thought and expression is not to be extended to Muslims. There was not one mention in his piece about how Muslims have been barred by law from wearing the burqa in France since 2010; should that right to religious expression not be defended? Closer to home, Dr. Tarek Mehanna, a Massachusetts Muslim man, was convicted in 2012 and is in the midst of a 17-year sentence for what The Nation calls “a thought

crime.” Upon his sentencing, the ACLU of Massachusetts stated it “is gravely concerned that today’s verdict against Tarek Mehanna undermines the First Amendment and threatens national security.” Where was Mr. Bedell’s outrage on behalf of Dr. Mehanna? America, the land of the brave hypocrites. TRAVIS REED MILLER, VIA EMAIL

Colts offense have ability to surprise NFL. Pats defense that struggled with the Ravens could be burned by Indy’s big guns. Dismiss it if you will, but there is a chance that the Colts can come into Gillette Stadium on Sunday (6:40 p.m., CBS) in the AFC Championship and win. As of Tuesday, the Pats are favored by 6.5 points against Indianapolis, but then again, the Colts were heavy underdogs in Denver and then they proceeded to go out and upset Peyton Manning and the Broncos, 24-13. Quarterback Andrew Luck (4,761 passing yards, 40 TDs, 16 INTs, 273 rushing yards, three rushing TDs) gives Indy a shot whenever he takes the field,

and at some point he’s going to beat the Pats (he comes in 0-3 vs. New England, all by more than 20 points). And since getting destroyed at home by the Pats, 42-20, in Week 11, the Colts have gone 7-1, including a 26-10 home victory over the playoff-inept Bengals the AFC Wild Card round. How have they done it? By utilizing some underrated players on offense. First and foremost, they finally deactivated Trent Richardson, who had proven to be useless on the field, and started giving second-year running back Dan Herron more touches. He has responded in the postseason with a total of 119 yards rushing, two touchdowns and 117 yards receiving. His only caveat is a fumbling issue: He’s put the ball on the ground twice and has lost one

in the playoffs. Wide receiver T.Y. Hilton is Luck’s main target and is one of the top deep threats in the league. He had an excellent regular season (82 catches, 1,345 yards, seven TDs) and has followed that up with a solid postseason so far (10 catches, 175 yards). He figures to get plenty of attention from Pats corner Darrelle Revis, who held him to just three catches for 24 yards in that Sunday night debacle. Revis has played at a high level all season but Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith showed on Saturday that Revis is still human, catching a touchdown and drawing multiple penalties on the Pats’ All-Pro.
