Police protesters to return to the streets Civil rights. Second wave of demonstrations planned through MLK weekend.

The confluence of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, and the six month anniversary of Eric Garner’s death will see protesters return to the streets of New York City. Protesters shut down the city streets in late November and early December after the grand jury decisions not to indict the officers responsible for killing Garner on Staten Island and Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The demonstrations stopped after Detectives Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were shot and killed by Ismaaiyl Brinsley on Dec. 20. Mayor Bill de Blasio and other elected officials called for an end to the protests until the pair were laid to rest. Groups known for anti-police rhetoric will be demonstrating Thursday, the mayor said. “[The groups] have a long history of unfortunately allowing some of their members to say really inappropriate, reprehensible things about our police officers,” de Blasio said. “Things that I feel are quite sick — anything that suggests violence toward police.

Visit Metro.us to learn about future protests and events. They may have a constitutional right to chant their chants, but they’re wrong, and they’re denigrating any notion of calling for reform.” The mayor did not name the groups he was talking about. Several groups, including People’s Power Assemblies and OWS-S17 and OccuEvolve, two groups asso-

ciated with Occupy Wall Street, have demonstrations planned for Friday. “I’m waiting for him to condemn the NYPD for murdering black youth, I’m more concerned about who’s going to be killed yet,” said Imani Henry, an organizer with People’s Power Assemblies. “I don’t think anyone is anti-cop, we’re talking about the fact that [people of color] are being beaten and brutalized, and it so happens the police are the ones doing it.” The Association of Legal Aid Attorneys of New York will march in Staten Island on Thursday to mark King’s birthday and the nearly six months since Garner’s death. ner died in July 17 last year. Bina Ahmad, a criminal defense attorney who is a member of the association, and represented Garner, said the mayor and other elected officials “don’t have the power” to tell citizens they can’t “engage in their First Amendment rights” after the deaths of two officers by a lone gunman who was not a civil rights activist. “I hope and think there will be more and

more people coming out in the streets,” Ahmad said. “Unless we see a massive change in police not killing unarmed citizens, then demonstrations will continue building and moving.” Both the Justice League and National Action Network have events planned for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday.

Safety. New York City saw drop in pedestrian deaths in 2014 Fewer pedestrians died New York City in 2014 than in any other year over the last century, city officials announced Wednesday. Preliminary figures show there were 250 traffic-related deaths last year, of which 134 were pedestrians. There were 180 pedestrian deaths in 2013,

marking a 27 percent drop since Mayor Bill de Blasio announced his Vision Zero initiative to reduce and eliminate traffic-related deaths. The policies, unveiled in February 2014, included redesigns of major intersections, newly installed speed bumps and lowering the speed limit to 25 mph from

35 mph. However, there was a rise in bicycle related deaths over the last three years. Twenty cyclists died in 2014, compared to 12 the year before and 18 the year before that. Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg said she was not happy with the spike. CHESTER JESUS SORIA

Legionnaire’s surge traced to cooling tower at Co-Op City

THE BEST CDs IN NYC ARE HERE %

NEW YORK

The outbreak of Legionnaire’s disease that sickened 12 Bronx residents over the last month has been traced to a cooling tower at Co-Op City, the Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene said Wednesday. Preliminary tests show cooling towers at Co-Op tested positive for the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease. Named Legionella, the bacteria that carries the disease can often be sourced to plumbing problems in whirlpool spas, humidifiers, hot water tanks and cooling towers like the ones in Co-Op City. Health Department representatives met with residents of the housing complex for the first time on Tuesday night.

Co-op City

/ GETTY IMAGES

Symptoms Symptoms of Legionnaires disease include fever, chills and cough, as well as loss of appetite, confusion and diarrhea.

The agency said that late last week they had instructed the company responsible for the cooling towers, River Bay Corporation, to disinfect them with chlorine. Officials said decontamination can take up to 10 days. How the bacteria made its way into the cooling towers remains unclear.

The contaminated samples were found in water supplies used to cool the buildings’ heating and electrical system — not in water used by residents for daily use. The bacteria typically is inhaled after the tainted water is vaporized. “We are conducting a thorough investigation and working closely with River Bay Corporation to minimize the public risk and to prevent future cases,” Health Commissioner Mary Bassett wrote in a statement. PATH trains to New Jersey will continue running overnight, Port Authority Chairman John Degnan said. A report prepared by Governor Andrew Cuomo and Chris Christie suggested cutting overnight service as a cost-saving measure The Port Authority had cited low overnight ridership numbers as the reason for the proposal. New Jersey Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox had been critical of the idea, as were the Jersey City and Hoboken mayors. Degnan said the proposal hasn’t been presented to PATH commissioners, and night service would only be cut after a public review, according to the New York Times. METRO

Crime. Police ID body found in suitcase Investigators identified the badly decomposed remains of a woman found inside a suitcase in Brooklyn two years ago as Erica McDaniel. Before Tuesday night, police only identified the victim found inside the suitcase as a black woman in her mid 20s between 5-feet and 5-feet-6-inches tall. DNA testing identified McDaniel, police said. It remained unclear what caused her death, but the medical examiner ruled it a homicide. McDaniel’s skeletal remains were found in March 2013 within the suitcase inside a burntout building at 174 Hull Street three miles away from her last known address. Police said McDaniel, 30, also lived in Kansas at some point before arriving at Brooklyn. Cops are asking that anyone with information about McDaniel

FBI arrests an Ohio man for planning attack on US Capitol Justice Department. Spokesman Marc Raimondi said the public was not in any danger during the investigation. An Ohio man claiming sympathy with Islamic State militants was arrested on Wednesday in connection with a plot to attack the U.S. Capitol with guns and bombs, court documents disclosed. Christopher Cornell, 20, of Cincinnati, researched the construction of pipe bombs, purchased a semi-automatic rifle and 600 rounds of ammunition and made plans to travel to Washington to carry out the plan, according to an FBI informant’s

In a meeting with the informant in November, Cornell said he considered members of Congress to be his enemies, according to the documents. He outlined a plan

The ongoing debate over how many f—s Kristen Stewart gives

It is a question that has plagues scholars, lo, since the nascent days of “Twilight” cinematic history: Exactly how many f—s does Kristen Stewart give? Many have argued that her enduring appeal as an iconoclast is rooted in her natural inability to give a f—. But Stewart herself renounces such spurious categorization. When culture

Here’s the thing, though — we apparently live in a world now where a collection of naked Miley Cyrus pictures is met with a collective yawn instead of the startled gasp I assume she was hoping for. As commentators over at Defamer put it, “It just seems so boring and one-dimensional,” and, “I, for one, appreciate Miley’s attempt to desexualize female nudity.”

Julianne Moore is heading for an Oscar Film. The “Still Aliceâ€? star could ďŹ nally earn her Academy Award, as long as she doesn’t bum everyone out along the way. Julianne Moore’s devastating performance in “Still Aliceâ€? — as a college professor diagnosed with a rare form of Alzheimer’s shortly after her 50th birthday — has already earned her a Golden Globe and countless critical accolades, but can it get her that one trophy that has so far eluded her over her im-

pressive film career? Moore has been nominated for an Oscar four times — two of them coming in the same year — but still doesn’t have a little gold statue of her own. While Moore’s performance is a standout, it’s a good thing Academy voters didn’t watch the heartbreaking film with the actress herself in the room. “My husband and I saw it together, and I hadn’t seen any of it, Moore says. “I heard all these sounds, I thought, ‘What the hell? Alfonso Ribeiro takes The Carlton on the road ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ See the reigning champion on tour tonight. You might say Alfonso Ribeiro took a very long path to the mirrorball trophy on “Dancing with the Stars.” While some of the contestants had a great deal of prior dance experience, Ribeiro’s started and ended as the 12-year-old star of “The Tap Dance Kid” on Broadway, and he’s quick to point out how long ago that was. According to him, the hard work you saw him do on the show was really the first time he’d focused on dance in years. “When I learned how to do ‘Tap Dance Kid,’ at the end of the day, they taught me to tap dance to do the show, which was not a long period of time that they taught me,” he says. Though he admits he continued to work on tap a bit throughout the years, the dances he learned for the show were “pretty foreign,” which was part of the appeal. “Just learning how to do it was pretty cool,” says Ribeiro. If you thought Ribeiro looked unusually confident out there for someone who wasn’t a trained dancer, that’s no accident. “At 43, you’ve gone on stage many times,” he Quoted

“I plan on making sure it’s going to be a fun time. We’ll see where the road takes me.” Ribeiro, on touring

points out. “I’ve always said, ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’ And the worst that can happen is you mess up, right? So, all right, I’ve messed up in my life before, not afraid of doing it again, so all I gotta do is go out and do the best I can, and whatever would happen, would happen.” Asked if any of this was making him yearn to hit the stage again after years of TV work, he says, “That’s why I’m doing the tour. See what it’s like actually out on that stage, night in, night out, having fun, hosting, talking with the audience. I plan on making sure it’s going to be a fun time. We’ll see where the road takes me.” Ribeiro and partner Witney Carson were both announced as participants in the “Dancing with the Stars Live!” tour, so he’s been hard at work rehearsing his dances and his stage patter. Ribeiro assures us there will be plenty of things that fans will appreciate: “We’re going to do the ones that people already love.” Sadly, this won’t include his ziplining turn, since that might be hard to coordinate at each new venue. And while he didn’t get much advice from pal Joey Fatone for the big competition, Fatone’s experience did affect Ribeiro’s approach. “I loved Joey and loved the way he performed every week and had so much fun on the show. If anything, I modeled just having fun and just really enjoying each dance, each week.” Seems like it worked. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

This isn’t Ribeiro’s first brush with a reality show victory. A few years ago, he won a singing competition called “Celebrity Duets,” but he says this win means more. “Singing’s just not as difficult on your body and your mind. You don’t have to physically get over anything.”

Watch ‘Swan Lake’ in Brooklyn Ballet. Russia’s legendary Mariinsky Theatre takes residency at BAM. About two years ago, Valery Gergiev — artistic director of Russia’s famous Mariinsky Theatre — began looking for a place in New York City where his legendary company’s three branches could perform under one roof. Eventually, he found it: in Brooklyn. Starting this week, the Mariinsky will bring its ballet, opera, and symphonic groups to Brooklyn Academy of Music for a rare 12day residency. “Gergiev was very anxious to have one place in all of New York City where residents could see all of what comprises his artistic

universe, says BAM Executive Producer Joseph Melillo. “And the only place he could do that was BAM. For its BAM spectacular, the 275-year-old company — the official ballet of the Russian Imperial Court and the launching pad for such legends as New York City Ballet founder George Balanchine, dancer Rudolph Nureyev, and superstar Mikhail Baryshnikov — is pulling out all the stops. The residency launches with just one performance of “The Enchanted Wanderer, a Russian opera by contemporary composer Rodion Shchedrin that merges traditional gypsy melodies, Russian Orthodox choral music, and traditional Slavic instruments. Other highlights are a program of dance pieces set to Chopin’s music (including one choreographed by Benjamin Millepied, aka

Mr. Natalie Portman) and a new, modern-Deco version of Prokofiev’s “Cinderella, choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky. “It really shows the breadth of Gergiev’s interests and the Mariinsky’s capabilities, says Melillo. “From a 20th century Russian opera to one of the most beloved and famous ballets in the world. That ballet — Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake — is the crown jewel of the Mariinsky’s repertoire, and if there’s one show that ballet enthusiasts want to check out, it’s that one. “It’s what the Mariinsky is famous for, says Melillo. Though, warning if you do check it out: It may spoil every other production for you. RAQUEL LANERI @metronewyork

For tickets to the Mariinsky Theater’s NYC performances visit BAM.org. / PROVIDED Fun facts Three things you didn’t know about “Swan Lakeâ€?: •

Its ďŹ rst production got terrible reviews. Though now considered Tchaikovsky’s greatest ballet, when “Swan Lakeâ€? debuted in 1877, it was denounced as a failure.

•

There originally was no “black swan. The character of Odile wasn’t

originally dressed in black feathers, but in worldly, bold colors — a more glamorous foil to the interior protagonist Odette. The idea of the black swan didn’t appear until the 1940s, but the image proved so powerful that it stuck ever since. •

The Mariinsky’s version has a happy ending. Under the Soviet regime

— which viewed dance as a collective expression of the Russian people — both the Mariinsky and Bolshoi Ballets were required to change “Swan Lake’sâ€? tragic ďŹ nale. The version the Mariinsky still performs — Konstantin Sergeyev’s famous, beautiful 1950 production — has this governmentmandated happy ending.

DATING

Change the way you look at dating in 2015 Resolutions. Leave your old dating habits behind in the new year. Changing for a relationship isn’t necessarily a bad thing, says one psychiatrist. “Being unwilling to change is a different way of saying that you are already perfect,” says Howard Forman a psychiatrist at New York’s Montefiore Medical Center. “And although perfect people may exist, I haven’t met many of them. With a good partner and in a good relationship, you change towards each other.” Forman explains why singles should leave conventional dating advice behind this year and suggests these tips instead.

Do you want to be doing the same thing all of the time or do you want to try something new?”

We talk a lot in therapy about fighting dirty vs. fighting clean,” says Forman. “When you fight dirty, if your partner does something like leave a dirty plate in the sink, you say things like ‘You are so inconsiderate.’ You’ve

Starting over. Divorced? Put the past behind you and get ready to start dating again For some people, it becomes abundantly clear when they need to start dating again. “I had been alone for 12 years after two bad marriages and I was going a little crazy,” Ann Anderson Evans recalls. “Celibacy was making me peculiar.” Since she wasn’t enjoying her peculiar state, Evans — the author of the new memoir “Daring to Date Again”— decided it was time to take action. Evans shares some pointers for those who may still be reluctant to start dating again.

Remember that you are not alone It’s easy for people who are unhappily single to think that they are the only ones who feel that way. “It’s so out of one’s individual control,” says Forman. “So it’s a question of how do you take something that is out of your control and expose yourself to the wonderful possibilities out there.”

Re: Free speech must extend to everyone’ (Metro, Jan. 14) In reply to letter writer Travis Reed Miller and his statement that wearing the burqa is an expression of religion: The Quran has no requirement that women cover their faces with a veil, or cover their bodies with the full-body burqa or chador. Therefore, the wearing of the burqa is NOT an expression of religion but the suppression/shaming of women.

Under Bowles, Jets players will need to be accountable NFL. New York’s new head man is said to be part disciplinarian, part “player’s coach.” In hiring Todd Bowles to be their next head coach, the New York Jets didn’t want to let the pendulum swing too far the other way, a team source told Metro on Wednesday. In Bowles they feel that they have a happy medium as they begin their transition from former head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan, the affable, goofy and uber-player’s coach, was a dream for anyone on the roster as he allowed an environment that was comfortable both publicly and privately. Players are quick to say that he wasn’t a lackadaisical head coach, just that his persona as a head coach who didn’t criticize players and who let affections get in the way at times was very true. In Bowles, the Jets have a former NFL veteran with a resume that shows more than two decades spent as an assistant as well as three games as an interim head coach. They believe, in the words of one source, that they “found a man

in Todd who brings accountability but doesn’t line up too far from the Rex years.” Ryan was criticized in years past for having a “Club Med” mentality to running the team and even wrote in his autobiography about the perception that the inmates ran the asylum. There is a history for Bowles with his new team, as he was the Jets secondary coach in 2000. In 2011, as interim head coach of the Dolphins, he

“He’s a player’s coach. He played in [the] league, he expects players to handle themselves,” the player said.

“He runs an attacking 3-4. Loves to blitz a lot,” the player added. “He teaches every aspect of the game to be aggressive, tackle aggressively, go after ball carriers and quarterbacks aggressively. He is also very good at studying other teams and tendencies. I stood by him countless times during games and heard him call out full drives of plays.”

had a 2-1 record, showing that he has some chops to be a head coach in this league. The organization was “blessed,” in the words of a team source, to hire Bowles — whose second interview with the Jets this week left them impressed. “He outlined a vision. He spoke well and clearly. You got the sense that he wasn’t going to cut corners,” the team source said. “He is big on accountability. I think ev-

eryone in that [interview] room knows that it is important in the NFL today to have a player’s respect but to understand that these are grown men, professionals. But you don’t want to swing too far from where this team was at and has been the past six years. Todd, to me, provided that balance. The players will love him, but he’s not a drillmaster. That’s im-

portant when you look at where this team has come from.” The source wouldn’t criticize Ryan or his handling of the team, only to say that “Bowles will resonate with the players on this team, but he will provide discipline and a high level of expectations.” KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer

The Rangers (24-12-4) lost for the first time in 2015 on Tuesday night at home, 3-0, to the rival Islanders (29-13-1). The Rangers will get back to work Thursday when they’ll play at Boston (7 p.m., MSG). It’s the first meeting between the Bruins and Blueshirts this season. The Islanders, who have won their last three games, will host Pittsburgh on Friday (7 p.m., MSG+) in a battle for Metropolitan Division supremacy.

REX RYAN IS NOW HEAD COACH OF THE BUFFALO BILLS. GETTY IMAGES

The timid, downtrodden Rex Ryan who whispered, “I can’t believe we’re 2-10 … what a joke” in his final month as head coach of the New York Jets, no longer exists. Making his triumphant return Wednesday in Orchard Park, was “Brash Rex,” as he was formally introduced as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills. “We’re going to build a bully and we’re

gonna see if you want to play it for 60 minutes,” Ryan said. “I’m not going to let our fans down. I’m not going to do that. I know it’s been 15 years [since the Bills made the postseason]. Well get ready. We’re going.” Ryan was asked if he was looking forward to facing his former team, the Jets, twice per season, but didn’t bite when it came to that particular AFC East team. “I’ll be honest, I think it’s still the Patriots that I want the most,” Ryan said.
