Protest. A local chapter of Black Lives Matter snarls morning rush-hour, endangers public safety Dozens of protesters were arraigned Thursday on charges of trespassing, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, after they blocked traffic on Interstate 93 in Medford and Milton, snarling the morning commute and causing what police called a “serious risk to public safety.” State Police arrested 29 supporters of the Boston chapter of Black Lives Matter, a national organization the protests violence against minorities. At around 7:30 a.m., activists started unloading 55-gallon barrels, each filled with 1,200 pounds of concrete, from a rented box truck and spread

them across the highway in Milton, according to Timothy P. Alben, superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police. Black Lives Matter organizers said the protest was meant to “disrupt business as usual” and “to confront white complacency in the systemic oppression of Black people in Boston.” In Medford, 17 people chained themselves together though a PVC pipe to block the highway in a tactic Alben referred to as a “sleeping dragon.” In Milton, six people were tied to the barrels, requiring police to cut them free. Activists who acted as lookouts and drivers were also arrested, Alben said. Some protesters wore adult diapers in anticipation of a daylong demonstration, according to police, though the scenes were cleared by 10 a.m. “This is not only immature and irresponsible, but the conduct is reckless and it endan-

gers people’s lives,” Alben said at a midday press conference. A Black Lives Matter spokeswoman could not be reached following the afternoon arraignments, however shortly after the demonstration was underway organizers released a statement on Facebook. “Today, our nonviolent direct action is meant to expose the reality that Boston is a city where white commuters and students use the city and leave, while Black and Brown communities are targeted by police, exploited, and displaced,” Korean-American activist Katie Seitz said in the statement. Organizers named 20 people of color who were killed by law enforcement officers in Boston within the past 15 years, and said they “mourn and honor all these lives.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Cops: Traffic protest endangered lives Protesters prevented an ambulance carrying an Easton crash victim with life-threatening injuries from reaching a level one trauma center in Boston, forcing it to divert to a smaller hospital in Brockton. “Ambulances had to be on-scene while we cut protesters out of restraints, meaning they were not available if needed elsewhere,” said State Police Superintendent Timothy P. Alben. “Anytime you divert public safety services to an incident like this it creates other potentially catastrophic problems.” METRO

Dozens of workers at Logan Airport protested Thursday the firing of an airplane cleaner who said he was terminated because he favored unionization. The former employee, Jose Candelario, a 20-year-old from Chelsea, said ReadyJet, an airplane cleaning company, fired him New Year’s Eve, shortly after he publicly complained that the company was targeting workers who were trying to unionize. He had worked as a cleaner for the company for about 16 months. Candelario, a native Spanish speaker, has yet to find another job. He said the company told him he was fired because he called in sick on Christmas Eve, but he is convinced it is because he complained about the shoddy treatment that he and his fellow workers received as well as their support for unionization. He has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board.

“I would encourage all the employees to file complaints because this is continuing to happen — the people that are standing up are getting fired,” Candelario said through an interpreter. The SEIU has maintained that the company has systemically fired those who engage in lawful union organizing activities. That union says ReadyJet has fired nearly one third of its work force — around 70 people — since January of this year. “ReadyJet and its employer JetBlue should know that retaliatory firings of union supporters are incompatible with the kind of workplace Logan Airport should be,” said Roxana Rivera, 32BJ SEIU District Director through a statement. Picking marathon bomb jury looms as challenge Boston. Jury candidates have begun to be questioned in the trial of Tsarnaev.

DOWNLOAD THE METRO.US APP

The challenge of seating a jury to hear the Boston Marathon bombing trial became clear on Thursday as candidates included a man whose roommates had urged him to vote for execution and a theologian worried such a vote would end his career. U.S. District Judge George O’Toole worked his way through a few dozen people as he sought to build a panel of 12 jurors and six alternates to determine whether 21-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was guilty of killing three people and injuring 264 in the attack and, if so, whether he deserves the death penalty.

The candidates who reported to U.S. District Court in Boston on Thursday had already made it through last week’s first round of screening, which saw 1,350 potential jurors fill out questionnaires about their ties to the case and views on the death penalty. To be eligible, potential jurors must be willing to consider either execution or life in prison without parole if Tsarnaev is convicted of the largest mass-casualty attack on U.S. soil since 9/11. The first candidate called, a young man who works in advertising, said he had already concluded Tsarnaev was guilty. “I live with several other males my age, a very testosterone-driven household, they think it’s very cool that I would get to sentence him to death,” the man said.

UnPatriotic? Here’s what it’s like to be a Colts fan in the commonwealth They might the loneliest people in Massachusetts this week: fans of the Indianapolis Colts deep in the heart of New England on the eve of the AFC Championship game. Lanesborough resident Michael Murphy said his father turned him on to the Colts during the 1960s, when they were still in Baltimore and Johnny Unitas was quarterback. He refers to the Patriots as “the evil football empire.” His favorite memory was attending the regular season Pats-Colts game in Foxborough in 2006 and witnessing a Colts victory. Marvin Harrison hauled in a catch in the endzone, where Murphy sat. This Sunday he may watch the game with his mother-inlaw. She’s in her mid-80s, he said, and a huge Pats fan. “It’s the Patriots game to lose,” said his son Derek, 34 and also a Colts fan. “To me the Pats look good, especially at home. I don’t like my chances but I’ll certainly be rooting the other way.” David Locke, a 35-year-old in Tewksbury who grew up in Indiana, is also predicting a Colts win. He dresses his 11-week-old daughter in Colts gear every Sunday. He calls Pats fans “a little

Brazilian booty trick crosses the border The moves

Single Leg Russian Deadlift “A single leg RDL is one of the best glute builders, and also great for balance and core strength. I add weight and do about four sets of 10-12 repetitions on each leg.” Kick one leg back as you hinge at the hips and keep supporting with knee slightly bent. Bring the kettle bell close to the ground making sure your shoulders are back and spine is neutral. Stand up tall, keeping your weight on the supporting leg.

Goblet Squat “The goblet squat is a great exercise to sculpt the booty and burn fat at the same time.

Adding a weight to your squats works your glutes, quads and core, too. I do about five sets of 15-20 repetitions.” Hold a weight against the chest. Position feet a bit wider than shoulder-width with toes pointed slightly out. Hinge your hips and sit back and down, keeping your chest up the entire time. Shoot back up, lift your chest, and squeeze your butt at the top.

Squat Jump Start from a deep squat. Keeping your arms back, jump and land in a squat with your weight on your heels. Keep knees over the heels and your core engaged throughout the jump. Repeat for about 25-30 seconds.

Fitness. The Butt Trainer has designed leggings to show off what your mama gave ya. The body part of the moment is surely the booty. But one fitness entrepreneur, Bostonbased trainer Kelly Brabants, got ahead of the trend two years ago when she launched Booty by Brabants, a 60-minute women-only fitness class. “I always had a big butt; people would make fun of it when I was younger. So, I’ve always done exercises that toned the butt,” she says. “I became known to people as The Butt Trainer, because I was always doing squats.” This month, the 25-year-old is expanding her booty beauty empire by launching a line of rear-shaping leggings. “My mom brought me a pair of leg-

FILM

Kevin Hart and Josh Gad go to the chapel Video. The “Wedding Ringer” stars talk fancy weddings and on-set animal abuse in our exclusive on-camera chat. If ads for “The Wedding Ringer” are to be believed, Kevin Hart and Josh Gad make for a fun on-screen duo. So we decided to put that to the test. We sat down with Hart and Gad for a video chat about their new film, the crazier weddings they've been to — let's just say that Hart has been going to some very, very fancy weddings — and how far is too far when it comes to comedy. Speaking of going too far, they also offer a heartfelt apology to one of their more used and abused co-stars. (No, it's not Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting.) Did this bear any resemblance to weddings that you've been to, just in terms of craziness? JG: I've been to one or two weddings that were a little bit crazy, where things got a little bit out of control. But for the most part I feel like most of the weddings I've been to have actually been really wonderful and amazing. KH: Yeah, I haven't been to anything with this type of vibe. I hope I don't. I don't want to go to a wedding where I go, "Did she just smack him? Oh God, we've got to chug the champagne." And then it's that awkward exit where everybody's like, "Man … do we take the cake or not? Do we get our gift bags or should we leave them? How do we handle this?" Do you go to weddings with gift bags often? KH: Where they give out gift bags? Every wedding I've been to, they gave out, like, a care package to everybody. JG: Kevin, those are awards shows. KH: No, those are the

When comedy turns into animal abuse Comedy is a tricky business, but for Hart and Gad, the bigger issue is that sometimes colleagues get hurt, physically or emotionally. They’re concerned one of their costars — a basset hound, to be exact — paid too high a price for their film’s laughs. “When you’re doing what we did to a dog, sometimes you’re wondering if that’s

KH: At one wedding we got slippers. We got some really nice slippers, with the bride and the groom’s last name [on them]. And actually it was an Ugg. True story. That had to be expensive. Usually I’m the one who’s supposed to get them a present at weddings. KH: No, you still give them gifts, but it’s like their appreciation package. Something with a picture of them. Feedback

How often do people just come up to you and express their opinion about whether Patrick is an idiot or not? I get some of that, but more just genuine praise for the

character. That’s a testament to the writers and the level of humanity that they brought to my character and that we collectively together [gave him]. In San Francisco I get stopped on the street a lot more frequently than I do in New York. People will stop me and say really nice things about the show. It’s great to hear that kind of vocal, enthusiastic feedback.

TELEVISION

Raul Castillo is firmly Team Richie

Q&A. The “Looking” star heads back to San Francisco for Season 2. HBO’s San Francisco-set “Looking” returns for a second season this Sunday, and star Raul Castillo knows that fans have opinions about the love triangle between his character, Richie, Patrick (Jonathan Groff) and Kevin (Russell Tovey). As for Castillo himself? He’s firmly Team Richie, he tells us, which isn’t that big of a surprise. Watching the first season, I thought your character could do better than Patrick, honestly. Well, I think Richie represents a part of Patrick that I think he has, in the same way that Kevin represents another part of him. It’s all about him grappling with those two sides of him. I think it’s exciting. It’s a fun way to explore this one character, through his love life. Are you able to remove yourself from the equation and have your own opinion about it? Or does playing Richie cloud your feelings? I mean, I always root for the underdog. I think if I were watching it naturally my inclination would lean toward Richie anyway. The production of this feels very much like an indie film. Is there a difference in the atmosphere on set to other

10

television shows you’ve done? I would say it’s one of the easiest, most comfortable working environments that I’ve been in, between theater, television and film. The symbiosis with the cast and the crew and [executive producer] Andrew [Haigh] specifically, really sets the tone and creates an environment where everyone is working toward a common goal. There’s definitely an indie feel. We get asked a lot about whether our dialogue is improvised because people tend to think it feels very off the cuff. And it’s a testament to our writers just how scripted it is. There’s very little improv, actually. I think it’s written very naturalistically. Andrew leans in that direction, and he’s a lot of fun to work around too. How did filming in San Francisco change once the show had been on the air? Even just among our crew, because a lot of them were local, they expressed how glad they were that we were back. And then that extended to the city of San Francisco itself. People gave us a lot of love on the street. The first year, I was kind of anonymous, and that was a wonderful asset to have as an actor. And this year was a little bit different. People would be approaching us on the street, but the feedback is usually really positive. I think people appreciate how the show depicts the city. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.us

FILM

Indie film gets a new queen Film. Desiree Akhavan talks about her big new breakthrough.

This is a big weekend for Desiree Akhavan. Her new indie “Appropriate Behavior” — which she wrote, directed and stars in, playing Shirin, a hip, Brooklyn-based, bisexual child of Iranian immigrants — opens in limited theatrical release and VOD. And the 30-yearold makes her “Girls” debut Sunday, as Chandra in Season Four of the HBO hit show. We squeezed into her busy schedule to discuss all of it. How close is “Appropriate Behavior” to your experience of coming out to your family? It’s not exactly close to my experience with my family. I never lied to them about living with somebody. But I saw friends do that with their families. It was important to have distinctions between the character’s story and my own.

There is something about the fact that it’s me in front of the camera that feels [to people] that it’s the story of my life. In a way, it’s like coming out twice. Which is easier coming out to your family, or the public? Oh my god — much, much harder to come out to your family. It feels like you’re telling this shameful secret. Once you do that you’re free not to give a s— about the world. You say “Annie Hall” influenced you. How so? I wanted to take a couple you knew were doomed from the start and see if you could

fall in love with them over the course of the film, which I think “Annie Hall” does. I grew up on romantic films, thinking if you have real love you hold onto it forever and it’s indestructible. Sometimes you have beautiful meaningful relationships with good people and they don’t work out. What did you think when Lena Dunham contacted you? Lena is very sweet. She’s a big figure in popular culture right now, but that all goes out the window.

“I THINK OF THIS FILM AS A COMEDY, I THINK OF MYSELF AS A COMEDIAN,” SAYS DESIREE AKHAVAN. / WIREIMAGE

Is it safe to say this won’t be shown in Iran? It is safe to say there will be no official screenings of this film in Iran. But I hope someone smuggles in a copy illegally.

Fitting in

The backstory Akhavan was born in New York City. “I didn’t fit in at all, but I’m not going to blame that on my ethnicity,” says the filmmaker, whose parents fled Iran during 1979’s Islamic Revolution. “I was ugly and awkward. In high school it was all about if I could sit with those cool people, I’d fit in. It changed for me as I became older. I am searching for my home, my people. There is no world I don’t fit into that I want to be a part of.”

GOING OUT

This ‘Vanya’ hits all the right notes Review. The Huntington’s run of Chris Durang’s farce lands its jokes with skill and ease. You don’t have to know anything about Anton Chekhov’s heavy Russian plays to enjoy “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.” But if you do, you’ll laugh even harder at the Huntington Theatre Company’s production of Christopher Durang’s Tony-winning farce. In a nutshell, Durang borrowed some of Chekhov’s most well-known 19th-century pessimists and turned them into discontented modern day 50-somethings with the same glum outlook as their namesakes. Vanya and Sonia still live at their childhood home, which is now owned by their sister Masha (who supported the duo while they cared for their dying parents). Masha makes an unexpected appearance at the home

with some big news, a hunky himbo named Spike and an invitation to a costume party that proves to be life-changing. Durang lovingly plays with Chekhov, attributing storylines and maudlin characteristics to the glum lot. In lesser hands, “Vanya” might suffer as the thin plot lacks Durang’s typically angst-laden bite, even veering into sweet sentimentality. But director Jessica Stone and an extraordinary ensemble turn a tale of mid-life angst into

an impeccably timed comedy. Marcia DeBonis has a riotous yet heartfelt turn as Sonia. Candy Buckley takes it way over the top in her flawless portrayal of Masha, while Matin Moran is superb as Vanya. The biggest surprise is the heart and humanity Tyler Lansing Weaks brings to dim-witted musclehead Spike.

a bad thing? The Quran quite explicitly demands the murder of apostates, yet the freedom of religion defense will hardly hold up in trial. Jesus demands that Christians abandon their families to follow him, but the freedom of religion defense will not hold up against a child support claim. Freedom of religion must be infringed when the alternative causes harm to other people. The burqa is a security risk little different than allowing people to walk in to banks with a ski mask on.

NFL playoffs

Brady responds to Lewis Former Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis caught some flak this week regarding his comments on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio when he said the following: “The only reason we know who Tom Brady is [it’s] because of the tuck rule. ... They don’t go to that championship game if that ball is not called a tuck. ... So now you’ve got to ask yourself, ‘When did the legacy really start?’” Brady responded in polite fashion Thursday, saying of Lewis, “Everyone has an opinion. I think Ray is a great player. He’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer. I was fortunate enough to play against him.”

NFL playoffs. The Patriots are one win away from yet another trip to the Super Bowl.

The Patriots are in the AFC Championship Game under Bill Belichick for the ninth time. It’s also the fourth straight season they’ve made it to this point in the season. But the Pats have come up short in the last two, losing to the Broncos last season, and the Ravens the year before. This year, though, the Pats are clear favorites to beat the Colts at home and advance to Super Bowl XLIX. The game will mark the fifth time the franchises will collide in a playoff game. New England has won three of the four previous postseason games against the Colts. And those facts mean exactly nothing to Pats coach Bill Belichick. “I don’t think any game in the past really has much application to this one,” Belichick told reporters earlier this week. “So what [happened in] some other year, in some other game, I don’t really care about. I don’t think it really matters.”

He shut down Reggie Wayne in the team’s last meeting, but there’s a good chance his coverage duties could change to T.Y. Hilton this weekend, clearly the best wide receiver on the Colts now.

Luck early on

The Patriots played with fire twice last weekend and somehow didn’t get burned. We know that if Belichick has the choice, he’ll defer receiving the ball to the second half. Even so, it’s important for New England to make a statement early. They can’t give the Colts reason to believe in a big upset. This is new terrain for the Andrew Luck-era Colts. In his third season, the 2012 first overall pick, has stewarded the Colts to the franchise’s first AFC Championship Game appearance since 2009. Luck threw for 4,761 yards and 40 touchdowns in the regular season, and added 641 yards and three touchdowns in Wild Card and Divisional round wins over Cincinnati and Denver. “He [has] a lot of strengths,” Belichick said. “No weaknesses. He’s got a great future in front of him.”

NFL playoffs

Patriots receivers are catching on It is a motley bunch of guys: the injury-prone, life-of-theparty tight end that, when healthy, is the best in the NFL; a former college quarterback turned supreme slot receiver; a free agent who had been a bust in New England until last week; and a much-lessheralded free agent who has boosted his career by teaming with Tom Brady. The bottom line is that the Patriots’ current cast of tight ends and wide receivers are good enough to help New England win their first Super Bowl in 10 years. This is a major change

from the last few seasons when Brady’s lack of receiving options was a legitimate hindrance that held the team back from another title, among other shortcomings. Rob Gronkowski (82 catches, 1,124 yards, 12 TDs in the regular season) and Julian Edelman (92 catches, 972 yards, 4 TDs in the regular season) need no introduction at this point. The emergence of Danny Amendola (5 catches, 81 yards, 2 TDs vs. Baltimore) last week and Brandon LaFell (74 catches, 953 yards, 7 TDs in the regular season and 5 catches for 62 yards & 1 TD vs. Ravens) basically all season, has helped the Pats’ offense become more

diverse and has allowed Brady to become less locked in on Gronkowski and Edelman. It is odd how things have

played out since Amendola was the sought-after free agent that the Pats signed for five years and $31 million in

March 2013, while LaFell was an afterthought inked to a three-year deal worth only $9 million a year later. Amendola battled injuries all last season and only managed 54 catches for 633 yards and two touchdowns in 12 regular season games. He was groomed as a replacement for Wes Welker, but Edelman ended up taking that job. LaFell’s transition has been much smoother, as it turns out that he was an underutilized weapon in Carolina. With one of the top quarterbacks of all time on his side, he put up career-best marks in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches in 2014. RICH SLATE

Tom Brady’s legacy is a fluid situation. Don’t think that Brady has forgotten that on Monday, Jan. 20, 2014 — a day after a 26-16 loss to Denver in the AFC Championship Game — the old argument that stated Peyton Manning was a better quarterback was alive and well. No one gave a damn that Brady was throwing to the likes of Austin Collie and Matthew Mulligan instead of Rob Gronkowski in that loss. In the aftermath of that game, all the chatter was focused on how Brady and Manning were tied, 2-2, in head-to-head meetings in the playoffs, and how Manning was headed to the Super Bowl in New York/New Jersey. All the chatter was focused on how Manning threw for 400 yards, two touchdowns and had a sparkling 118.4 passer rating in the game while Brady threw for just 277 yards, one touchdown and had a rating of 93.9 … meh. Add in the fact that Brady had a poor outing in the divisional round win over the Colts the previous weekend (13 of 25 for just 198 yards, zero touchdowns and a QB rating of just 78.4) and there was a train of thought that Brady may have lost his “clutch gene.” Brady won’t be able to break his 2-2 playoff tie with Manning this year (or possibly

ever considering No. 18 is iffy to return), but that stat is more or less meaningless at the moment anyway. Right now, ask just about anyone outside of Denver or Indy as to who the better quarterback is all time and Brady will garner 90 percent of the vote. We live in

a “what have you done for me lately” sports world, after all. With Manning out of the way, Brady is back to trying to live up to his own early career postseason success (Brady began his NFL career an unreal 10-0 in the playoffs) and he’s back to chasing the likes of Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw, both of whom have four Super Bowl rings. Winning this Sunday’s game over Andrew Luck and the Colts won’t do much in terms of changing Brady’s legacy, even if he throws for 400 yards and posts four touchdowns. Come Monday, off a Patriots win, critics will point to the fact that unlike Montana and Bradshaw, Brady isn’t perfect in the Super Bowl as he has a mediocre 3-2 record. Critics will point to the fact that Brady and the Patriots haven’t won the “big one” in 10 years. So the talk about Brady’s potential status as the “greatest of all time” will need to be put on hold until early February. In terms of legacy, only the negative can occur this weekend for No. 12. A loss to the up-and-coming Colts, and the chatter won’t be about Brady’s chase of Bradshaw and Montana. It will be right back to discussions about him holding off Jimmy Garoppolo. Brady’s football legacy? It’s a day-to-day type of deal.
