Police on Tuesday were still trying to learn why a gunman walked into Brigham and Women’s Hospital and shot a doctor twice before fatally shooting himself in an exam room. The gunfire prompted some workers to barricade themselves in hospital rooms while others fled the building. The shooting occurred just after 11 a.m. on what had been a normal and busy day on the second floor of the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center, at 75 Francis St. in the Longwood area of Boston. Police identified the victim as Stephen Pasceri, 55, of Millbury. The doctor suffered what Boston Police Commissioner William Evans de-

scribed as “life-threatening injuries.” WBZ reported the doctor was cardiac surgeon Michael Davidson, although neither Boston Police nor the hospital would confirm that. Police were interviewing witnesses and seeking a motive, Evans said at an afternoon press conference at the hospital. He said the gunman walked into the hospital asking for the doctor he later shot. “Why and for whatever reason is something we’re looking into,” Evans said. Witnesses described the

suspect to police as about six-feet, wearing glasses, beige khakis and a blue sweater. Policing arriving at the hospital searched the second floor of the building, where they found the man dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, along with a gun, in an exam room. He had shot the doctor in a nearby lobby area, Evans said. The doctor was rushed to Brigham and Women’s emergency room. Evans said police don’t believe the gunman was a pa-

tient of the doctor. It was unclear what kind of gun was used or where in his body the doctor was wounded. The doctor, according to the hospital, was in surgery as of late Tuesday afternoon. Initially, the hospital said in two separate statements that the gunman had been apprehended, but Evans said at the press conference he had taken his own life with a single gunshot. “It makes me sick to my stomach,” said JoAnne Wilson of East Falmouth, who was visiting her brother in the hospital. “I’ve come out of those elevators so many times in the last week. You never feel like that would happen here. You feel bad for the doctor,” she said as news helicopters buzzed overhead. A spokeswoman for the hospital said the hospital did not have metal detectors at its entrances. DANNY MCDONALD @DMacCash daniel.mcdonald@metro.us

Motive

Shooting victim had treated gunman’s mom The shooter may have been son of the doctor’s former patient. Stephen Pasceri. the 55-year-old Millbury man identified by police as the shooter, may have been the son of a woman who died after being treated by the doctor. Marguerite Pasceri, who died Nov. 15, was a patient of the doctor, NewsCenter 5 reported, citing sources it did not identify. The station said Pasceri was licensed to carry a gun. Boston.com reported that the victim was Dr. Michael Davidson, a cardiac surgeon at the hospital. In a 2012 article in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, Stephen Pasceri was identified as an accountant who, along with his mother, Margie, were struggling with hospital charges for his late father, who died of a heart attack. He made copies of the bills, which he called exorbitant, according to the column by Dianne Williamson. PETER GREEN

Tsarnaev. Jury selection drags on in 2013 Boston Marathon bombing trial Eighteen prospective jurors were quizzed Tuesday in the federal death penalty trial of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev as jury selection entered its third week at U.S. District Court in Boston. U.S. District Judge George O’Toole had planned to bring in 40 prospective jurors each day of voir dire, but only 20 were called in Tuesday. Two jurors were not present. “I looked at it as my duty and even as a privilege should I be asked to be a part of this,” said potential juror number 69, a woman who works for Massachusetts General Hospital. That juror said she knew nothing of this month’s Paris terror attack, and didn’t recall President Obama had visited Mass General after the bombings. She said she could impose the death penalty if the evidence supported it. “Some may be completely sincere, some may be harboring secret biases that they are not completely disclosing,”

Last week, O’Toole questioned 34 people filtered from a list of 1,350.

Defense Attorney David Bruck said. “I think you need to see all the evidence and all the proof before you can make that decision. It’s a big decision to make,” said a 2007 graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, where Tsarnaev attended school. Throughout all of this, Tsarnaev sat between his lawyers, occasionally fidgeting with his clothing or playing with a pen. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

Suffolk DA: Police cleared in 2013 shooting death Two Boston police officers who exchanged fire in 2013 with a 20-year-old AfricanAmerican man, killing him, have been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said Tuesday.

Darryl Max Dookhran WELLESLEY POLICE DEPARTMENT

Darryl Dookhran had shot Officer Ryan Lenane, wounding him in the arm, near Geneva Avenue and Westville Street in Dorchester on Dec. 7, 2013. Conley found that Lenane and Sgt. Thomas Teahan acted “in self-defense and the defense of others when they shot Dookhran.” The two cops only opened fire after Dookhran had already shot Lenane, Conley said.

Conley said he reached that conclusion after reviewing surveillance imagery from the area, recorded statements of the police involved and six civilian witnesses, reports of more than 100 other civilians, medical records and ballistics testing. The two policemen, along with Officer William Traft, had spotted Dookhran walking on Geneva Avenue and recognized him. METRO

Hernandez trial looms over Pats Fall River. Patriots owner Kraft and head coach Belichick could be called to testify. As New England Patriots prep for the NFL Super Bowl XLIX, their former teammate is facing prospective jurors in a looming murder trial that may draw high-profile prosecution witnesses including Patriots owner Robert Kraft and coach Bill Belichick. About two dozen jurors answered questions Tuesday at Bristol County Superior Court in Fall River during closed-door sidebar sessions that were cut off from the media as well as family members of Odin Lloyd, the 27-year-old Dorchester man Hernandez allegedly shot dead in June 2013. Hernandez had a $41 mil-

lion contract at the time of his arrest. He has pleaded not guilty to Lloyd’s death, as well as the shooting deaths of two Boston men in 2012 — a separate case. More than 1,100 jury candidates were summoned to Superior Court in Fall River this month to fill out questionnaires, which included questions about whether they had tattoos, were fans of the Patriots or had personal experience with marijuana. Kraft’s and Belichick’s names were included on a list of more than 300 potential witnesses that prosecutors might call once testimony gets going. Two NFL players, Brandon Spikes of the Buffalo Bills and Mike Pouncey of the Miami Dolphins, may also testify.

MassINC poll. Bostonians want a vote on city’s bid to host 2024 Olympics Three-quarters of Boston-area residents say that they should get a chance to vote on a planned bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games, according to a poll released Tuesday. While about half of respondents to the poll by MassINC Polling Group for WBUR radio said they supported the idea of hosting the games, they disagreed with Mayor Martin Walsh’s statement that no vote was needed. From our all-laser, bladeless LASIK procedure – to exciting developments like our Visian Implantable lens - our commitment to leading edge technology is surpassed only by our dedication to personalized patient care. Patients of New England Eye Center find confidence in knowing we offer experience you can trust and technology you can rely on. NASA-Approved LASIK - Our all-laser, bladeless LASIK at New England Eye Center has greatly improved results and helped take the fear out of having LASIK. The vast majority of our LASIK and PRK patients now achieve 20/20 vision at distance without glasses or contact lenses. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots. Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lens-like device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time. Refractive Lens Exchange - If you’re frustrated with reading glasses and bifocals, our refractive specialists perform a procedure known as Refractive Lens Exchange. By replacing your eye’s aging natural lens with a Intraocular Lens Implant customized specifically for your visual needs - and your lifestyle - allowing you to see better, look younger and never have to worry about developing cataracts! Laser Cataract Surgery - For seniors experiencing changes in their vision – or who have been diagnosed with a cataract – New England Eye Center is turning the dream of Laser Cataract Surgery into reality. We are currently among only the top 3% of practices in the country to offer patients the added precision and accuracy of Laser Cataract Surgery using OptiMedica® Catalys™ Precision Laser System. This year, take your vision to the NEXT LEVEL by giving yourself or a loved one the Gift of Sight. Now that’s a Gift that keeps on Giving. A blessed New Year from the surgeons and staff of New England Eye Center.

President Barack Obama proposed to hike taxes on the wealthy in his State of the Union speech Tuesday night, an idea already panned by Republicans in Congress who want him to aggressively pursue trade deals with Asia and Europe. Obama said he wants to reach out to Republicans who support trade deals his administration has pursued, over the objections of some of his fellow Democrats. That idea is popular with Democrats, who are looking beyond Obama’s tenure to 2016 elections. But it seems

dead on arrival with Republicans who control both houses of Congress. Obama’s aim is to help those left behind by an economic revival taking hold six years into his tenure, which began with the Democrat facing a crippling financial crisis. He has said trade deals could help expand markets for American goods and services. Obama also updated Americans on the threat of Islamic extremists, two weeks after 17 people were killed in attacks in France. Obama defended his decision to seek to normalize diplomatic relations with Cuba. Alan Gross, the U.S. aid worker whose release from a Cuban prison helped pave the way toward restoring diplomatic ties with Cuba, was among Michelle Obama’s guests at the speech. REUTERS

The militant group Islamic State (ISIS) released an online video on Tuesday purporting to show two Japanese captives and threatening to kill them unless it received $200 million in ransom. The video was not dated, but on a visit to Cairo on Jan. 17, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged around $200 million in non-military assistance for countries battling ISIS. Abe, speaking in Jerusalem on Tuesday near the end of a six-day tour of the Middle East, said ISIS’ threat against the two purported captives was “unacceptable.” “Extremism and Islam are completely different things,” Abe said. “We strongly demand the immediate release

Attention actors who try to launch music careers: Stop it. You’re making Johnny Depp sick. “That whole idea for me is a sickening thing, it’s always just made me sick,” Depp said while promoting “Mortdecai” in Berlin. “I hate the idea, ‘Come see me play guitar because you’ve seen me in 12 movies.’ It shouldn’t be. You want the people who are listening to the music to only be interested in the music.” Firm but fair. So, according to Depp’s strict, Draconian take on how music should be appreciated, which of his fellow movie stars are in violation? Jared Leto certainly jumps to mind, as does Scarlett Johansson — hey, remember her album of Tom Waits covers? Yeah, no. Oh, and Russell Crowe has a band. And doesn’t Gwyneth Paltrow like to sing, too? Man, they’re all going to have some explaining to do when they see Depp at the next Millionaire Movie Stars Rotary Club meeting. But at least some good comes from all of this, as Depp insists, “You won’t be hearing The Johnny Depp HUH? REMEMBER THIS GUY, JOHNNY? Band. That won’t ever exist.”

Unapologetic ’80s rockers Motley Crue put an expiration date on their ongoing “final” tour, culminating in their last show ever as a band — which probably comes as a surprise to those of us who didn’t realize the band was still together. The last leg begins in North America in July, winding down to a New Year’s Eve show in the band’s native Los Angeles. And in a signal that there continues to be no justice in the world, Alice Cooper will continue to serve as the band’s opening act, which is exactly the opposite of how things should be. Regardless of how the years have treated Motley Crue, though, I can attest that “Kickstart my Heart” holds up surprisingly well.

Matt Healy, ostensibly the singer of the band The 1975, is becoming much better known as the guy who insists he’s not dating Taylor Swift, despite photos of the pair together and his regular comments during interviews about meeting her. But God, guys, why do you keep bringing it up? He totally doesn’t want to talk about it. Except he does: It’s “all bloody fake. It’s a farce,” Healy insists during a recent radio interview. “We met each other, we exchanged numbers in the same way that a lot of people in this world kind of do, and we spoke occasionally. She’s the biggest pop star in the world and I’m in Australia. There’s no relationship of anything happening. It’s just funny how people really, really buy into that.” That’s all fine and good, but why do you have to bag on Australia like that? What’s wrong with Australia?

MICHAEL MANN’S ‘ALI’ ONLY GETS BETTER WITH AGE

Interview. The “Paddington” star is more comfortable as the villain — and is handy with a knife.

Netflix Instant

Clint Eastwood had a great weekend, with “American Sniper” grossing Marvel money. Meanwhile, another stubborn director, Michael Mann, did not have a great weekend. His $80 million, cyber-thriller “Blackhat,” barely cracked the top 10. Mann has often had trouble with audiences. For every “The Last of the Mohicans,” “Heat,” or “Collateral,” there’s an underperformer like “Ali,” his underrated look at the pugilist (played by Will Smith). At face value, it’s a comeback movie, charting the 10 years that included Muhammad Ali’s banishment from boxing to the “Rumble in the Jungle.” But it delights in denying audiences the usual biopic pleasures. It’s an odd bird in other ways. This is a film from 2001 that shows its hero triumphantly converting to Islam. The film’s best segment is its opening: a dizzying 10-minute montage backed by live Sam Cooke that contextualizes Ali in the Black Power movement. And the whole film is building not just to a victory but to a return to Africa. The movie gets better the more you revisit it.

Will Smith takes on the role of the legendary boxer in Michael Mann’s “Ali.” / PROVIDED Netflix Instant

‘Pee-wee’s Big Adventure’ No one’s seeing “Big Eyes,” which is sad: It’s the most interesting film Tim Burton has made in ages. It’s also the cheapest film he’s ever made — $3 million cheaper, after adjusting for inflation, than his best work: “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.” A loopy vehicle for Paul Reubens, it has him searching for his stolen bike.

STREAM THIS Matt Prigge’s guide to what you can watch on the Internet.

Nicole Kidman says Stanley Kubrick once told her, “You’re a character actress, Nicole. Don’t play leading ladies. Go and find the character roles.” And if her work in “Paddington” is any indication, he was onto something. Kidman revels in the role of the villainous Millicent, a high-end taxidermist on a mission to kill, stuff and mount the titular talking bear. “I was lucky because they had a pretty strong vision for [the character] when I came in,” she says with a laugh. As a mother with two young girls at home, it would be understandable if Kidman had

to be right.’” How right Firth was. “We worked with him a lot and rehearsed with him a bit, and he’s terrific, but as the animation emerged, you just didn’t believe his voice coming out of this cub,” King admits. “We tried doing some digital things to make him feel a little lighter, but it sounded so Smurf-y, so quickly. any reservations about getting so nasty and evil on screen. But far from it. “Initially, they were like, ‘Oh no, please don’t be the one that wants to hurt the bear,” she says. “But now they understand the behind-thescenes, and strangely enough, my 6-year-old really loves the villain character, which kind of worries me.” Any worry, though, was put to rest by the finished product. “It was really great because I got to watch the film with my mom, who is 74, and my 4-year-old and my 6-year-old. All of them were laughing at the same things — that’s amazing,” she says. And “Paddington” puts to rest an old filmmaking adage. “They always say if you have a great time making a movie, the movie’s not going to be any good. But this movie is good, and we had a really good time. That refutes that, right?” And her biggest take-away from the film? One particularly deadly new skill — that didn’t quite make it into the movie. “I did learn how to throw knives, which they subsequently cut out of the film,” Kidman admits. “I just remember [producer] David [Heyman] going, ‘It’s a children’s movie!’ I throw one knife now. But I’m saving my knife-throwing technique for another film. Or for real life!” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

WINTER-EYES YOUR Desiree Akhavan wrote, directed and starred in the film “Appropriate Behavior.” / GRAVITAS VENTURES

Indie film gets a new queen Film. Desiree Akhavan talks about her big new breakthrough. These are exciting times for Desiree Akhavan. Her new independent film “Appropriate Behavior” — which she wrote, directed and stars in, playing Shirin, a hip, Brooklyn-based and openly bisexual child of Iranian immigrants — just hit VOD. And the 30-year-old just made her “Girls” debut Sunday. We squeezed into her busy schedule to discuss all of it. How close would you say “Appropriate Behavior” to your experience of coming out to your family? It’s not exactly close to my experience with my family. I never lied to them about living with somebody. But I saw friends do that with their families. It was important to have distinctions between the character’s story and my own. There is something about the fact that it’s me in front of the camera that feels [to people] that it’s the story of my life. In a way, it’s like coming out twice. Which is easier coming out to your family, or the public? Oh my god — much, much harder to come out to your family. It feels like you’re telling this shameful secret. Once you do that

Fitting in

The backstory Akhavan was born in New York City and grew up in Rockland County. “I didn’t fit in at all, but I’m not going to blame that on my ethnicity,” says the filmmaker, whose parents fled Iran during 1979’s Islamic Revolution. “I was ugly and awkward. In high school it was all about if I could sit with those cool people, I’d fit in. It changed for me as I became older. I am searching for my home, my people. There is no world I don’t fit into that I want to be a part of.”

you’re free not to give a s— about the world. The movie has funny scenes amongst the seriousness. I think of this film as a comedy. I think of myself as a comedian. I love Louis CK who gets very dark, and looks at life and the futility of it all. You say “Annie Hall” influenced you. How so? I wanted to take a couple you knew were doomed from the start and see if you could fall in love with them over the course of the film, which I think “Annie Hall” does. I grew up on romantic films, thinking if you have real love you hold onto it forever and it’s indestructible. Sometimes you have beautiful meaningful relationships with good people and they don’t work out. What did you think when Lena Dunham contacted you? Lena is very sweet. She’s a big figure in popular culture right now, but that all goes out the window.

“I THINK OF THIS FILM AS A COMEDY, I THINK OF MYSELF AS A COMEDIAN,” SAYS DESIREE AKHAVAN. / WIREIMAGE

Is it safe to say this won’t be shown in Iran? It is safe to say there will be no official screenings of this film in Iran. But I hope someone smuggles in a copy illegally. LINDA LABAN @MetroBos linda.laban@metro.us

Tom Colicchio’s guide to dining “Best New Restaurant.” We asked the “Top Chef” judge about the foodie landscape and what role the diner has in creating a great experience. Tom Colicchio knows there’s more to a restaurant than its executive chef. The “Top Chef” head judge and owner of seven restaurants from NYC to Los Angeles is getting out of the kitchen to show what makes a truly great spot in Bravo’s new reality series, “Best New Restaurant,” premiering Wednesday at 10 p.m. “This show is very different from ‘Top Chef,’ and I think

just the nature of the show is a little more playful and fun at times,” he says. The show will go inside 16 restaurants around the country competing for the eponymous title. “It’s not just about food, it’s about the entire restaurant experience: food, service and hospitality,” Colicchio says. “You really see how restaurants work, as opposed to maybe seeing on ‘Top Chef’ how a chef thinks about food.” We asked Colicchio about whether the foodie landscape is changing — Austin, Texas, is better represented on the show than New York City — and what you should definitely not do (and what he doesn’t mind) when dining out. Is New York losing its foodie edge? No, not at all. In fact it seems like New York just gets stronger and stronger. There are so many restaurants now. You have the outer boroughs — not just Brooklyn — you have Queens, and you have good restaurants everywhere. Young chefs who don’t necessarily have the means of opening restaurants in Manhattan are doing great things in small

places, like The Pines out in Gowanus. What’s going on in Austin? You have a lot of creative young people [in Austin], the spaces are still reasonable, and if you can open a restaurant in Nashville, Austin or Charleston, why come and spend $150 a foot in NYC when you can do something for $30 a foot? There are still young people who want to do their own thing. They’re finding creative ways to do it — that’s why you have pop-up restaurants, that’s why you have food trucks, because people are trying to figure out a way to get their creative stuff out there. You can literally pull up in a food

truck somewhere and get food as good as you can in a restaurant — it’s just coming out of a truck and you’re sitting on a park bench. Have customers become more demanding? In larger cities, obviously you have more people who don’t cook. They’re working all day, they come home, the last thing they want to do is start cooking. They don’t have kitchens to cook; it’s not like the suburbs. What’s happened because of food TV — shows like “Top Chef” — is the population is expecting more. What do you think about ordering off the menu? Personally, I don’t like saying “No” within reason. If someone says to me, “I really want the striped bass but I want the garnish that’s on the halibut”? Fine. I don’t care. I’m not going to say what a chef should do. I can just speak for myself. If you ask at my restaurant, I would hope the answer is “Yes.”

Now it’s your turn

Customer etiquette What is the single worst thing a customer can do? I think my biggest pet peeve really is [when a customer comes in] not expecting a good time. Whatever it is, leave your lousy day behind, whatever happened in the office, leave it behind and come in and let the restaurant do its thing. I really think that the best experience you can have is when you engage with your server and enjoy yourself. What about taking pictures of food? What do I care? [But] don’t spend 20 minutes taking pictures of food and then complain it’s cold! MATTHEW LEE @Mattlee2669 letters@metro.us

The Beekman Boys bring the farm to us Country living. If the lifestyle experts have one piece of advice, it’s this: Slow down. Brent Ridge and Josh KilmerPurcell might be cookbook and memoir authors, reality TV stars on the Cooking Channel’s “The Fabulous Beekman Boys, and winners of “The Amazing Race — but they’re in no rush. The couple traded in big city bustle for quiet country life (not entirely by choice) and they’re loving the change of pace. “We were two Manhattanites with great careers in the city. Then in 2008, we both lost our jobs in the recession. And we had to figure out a way to reinvent ourselves, says Ridge, a physician who was VP of Healthy Living for Martha Stewart Omnimedia (Stewart blogged their 2013 wedding). Kilmer-Purcell was an ad exec and author of two memoirs: I Am Not Myself These Days, about his drag days, and “The Bucolic Plague, about the couple’s weekend adventures fixing up the Beekman Mansion, a 200-year-old estate in Sharon Springs, New York. When they found themselves out of work and the part-time country digs became a full-time residence, Ridge and Kilmer-Purcell’s fast-paced lifestyle came to a halt.

Building the brand Suddenly, they were learning how to live by the seasons. They started growing their own food, and a neighboring farmer brought his herd of dairy goats to their property — so they started a line of goat milk products. “Farm to table took on a new, very literal meaning. From there, they created the brand Beekman 1802, named for the year the house was built. Both Beekman1802.com and the Sharon Springs brickand-mortar shop sell goat milk soap, artisanal furniture,

“Consider planting just one thing in your house. One tomato plant or one pepper plant he says. “Then you can watch that process – you want to wait for something before you have it. The biggest — and most rewarding — challenge in living seasonally was learning how to wait. “Living in the city, it was always about instant gratification: Having what you wanted the second you wanted it, Ridge explains. “When we moved to the country and started growing our own food, starting having to drive 30 minutes to get to the nearest large store, we had to deal with delayed gratification — which makes us appreciate things so much more. It changed our whole philosophy on life.

WELLBEING

Joined a gym? With these trainer tips, you won’t feel like the new kid in class. It’s a good time to make a fitness resolution, with an explosion of boutique studios offering more ways to work out than ever. And, you may think, just as many ways to embarrass yourself with unfamiliar equipment, complicated routines and the a lack of gymnast flexibility. Many people miss out on great fitness classes because they feel intimidated, and celebrity trainer Simone De La Rue doesn’t want that to happen. In addition to clients like Anne Hathaway and Naomi Watts, the Australian also has Body By Simone studios in L.A. and Manhattan — and knows that everyone who walks in is a newbie in some way. But exercising together is worth the initial hurdles: It’s motivating, keeps you accountable and creates a community. “Group fitness has been around for years, and it works because you’re feeding off the energy of other people, she says.

No. 4

Discover your passion The best class for you is the one you’ll go back to. De La Rue’s passion is cardio dance, which links her to her ballet training and avoids monotony. “Dance is using your whole body and using your brain as well to work in coordination, she says. “It’s creative, it’s expressive, it’s a joyous way of exercising. Those words should describe how you feel while working out, too.

Exercise should be fun! / ISTOCK

We asked De La Rue how to start off on the right foot.

No. 1

The right class There’s always more than one way to work the body parts you’re concerned about: If you’re looking for cardio but are not coordinated, skip the dancing and go for the full-body class. “Pick something that’s in your comfort zone to build up your strength and confidence.

2

Get a sneak preview. Feeling intimidated is common, but you don’t have to walk into a class totally unprepared. “A lot of time people come and have a private session first to build up their confidence before they feel comfortable going into the class, says De La Rue. Ask if the studio can offer you some one-on-one time with an instructor to preview the basic techniques and offer advice.

3

You’re all there to sweat. “A lot of people even struggle looking at themselves in the mirror, says De La Rue. The thing to remember is that you’re the only one looking at you — everyone else is just as busy worrying about themselves. So face yourself, acknowledge where you are and focus on learning the skills to build your confidence. EVA KIS @thisiskis

Free Mini-Med School Classes at Harvard Medical School Begin March 10 Health information comes to you every time you watch the news, listen to the radio, or visit a website. To navigate through the often confusing messages, the Longwood Seminars at Harvard Medical School offer the general public reliable information on complex health and scientific issues—at no cost and without a referral. No scientific background is needed to enroll in these minimed school seminars. Those who attend three or more classes are eligible for a certificate of completion. Teachers who attend all four classes can earn 10 professional development points (PDPs).

At each mini-med school seminar, Harvard Medical School faculty members present an overview of the seminar topic, and then explain both the scientific and clinical implications of the issue, as well as the latest research findings. Following is a Q&A session, when you will have an opportunity to question the experts. Space is limited. Register online at hms.harvard.edu/ minimedschool or call 617-432-3038. they spread? In this seminar researchers explain how they are developing ways to track, control and eventually cure these diseases. All mini-med school classes run from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center, Harvard Medical School, 77 Avenue Louis Pasteur, Boston. The Conference Center is a short walk from the Longwood T stops on the Green Line D and E trains and several bus lines including the #39 and #47. Parking is available at public garages in the Longwood Medical Area.

Five tips for staying active this winter

HEALTH GUIDE

Staying active during the winter months can be difficult. Weather, packed holiday schedules, and fewer daylight hours can often get in the way of a regular fitness routine. But staying in shape doesn't always have to mean heading to the gym or a fitness class. There are many exercises that can be done at home and adjusted to fit any skill or strength level.

5. Monitor activity and set goals

Nancy Campbell, MS, an exercise physiologist with Dana-Farber, provides tips for staying active this winter:

1. Try exercise videos There are countless DVDs and videos featuring a wide range of workouts that can be done at home. Many of these videos can be rented at the public library or viewed for free using websites like YouTube. For anyone who is just starting a fitness routine, Campbell recommends "walking workout" videos that involve marching in place for varying distances or amounts of time.

2. Incorporate household items into a workout Exercising doesn't necessarily need to involve machines or weights at the gym. Try walking up and down stairs, or up and down just two stairs at a time. Push-ups are also an easy way to build strength and can be done on the knees or off of a wall or coffee table. For more strength training, Campbell suggests using soup cans in place of dumbbells.

16

3. Find a buddy Sometimes it can be difficult to get motivated during the winter months. Campbell recommends finding an exercise buddy. Try going for walks together either outside or in a mall if it's too cold. Your buddy can also be someone who checks in with you to make sure you're sticking to a fitness routine.

4. Make "activity dates" The winter months are often filled with meet-ups with friends and family who are visiting for the holidays or taking time off. Instead of meeting for dinner or drinks, Campbell recommends making "activity dates" like walking, hiking, snowshoeing, or trying a new yoga studio.

Campbell encourages anyone who is starting a fitness routine to set goals and work slowly toward them. This could be a simple commitment to exercise three days a week, or a larger goal like a charity walk or 5K. To keep track of progress, Campbell recommends using a pedometer or fitness-tracking smartphone apps. Friends can also compare numbers in a friendly competition, which can help keep up motivation. Can’t have civil rights and ignore them too

these civil disobedients. Lynch even says he hates the Bill Of Rights and that no one should ever question police. The NYPost acts like they now love MLK Jr., when nothing could be further from the truth. These people are still oppressing black people to this very day. And I think the police force is worse than the KKK, specifically because it DOES have black people in it. The black cops are even more racist than the white police, because they’re trying to show off that they don’t care about race and care more about police. Us vs them. I think you can’t have it both ways. Is it

How is it not insincere for many to celebrate MLK Jr. Day, when he was a consistent lawbreaker who refused to listen to police orders? If he were alive today, the police and DAs and press would be calling him an “agitator,” beating him up, and jailing him. New York’s Pat Lynch and his ilk don’t hail the marchers TODAY for fighting for civil rights. They are fully against civil rights and they denounce

wrong or right to defy police when the laws they enforce are wrong? The press hail MLK now, for his breaking the law, but they just spent the past five months since Garner telling us to always obey the police. UCHENA SHOREY, VIA EMAIL

Re: ‘Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Legacy’ (Metro.us) I read your paper every weekday morning and was disappointed with the article because it includes a quote from a single construction worker who yelled, “Police lives matter too!” The article fails to include the organizer’s explanation of why

we chanted, “Black Lives Matter,” at the protest on Monday. The organizer clearly stated, before the march began, that we are chanting because saying “All Lives Matter” is a lie until “Black Lives Matter.” Police have the power to kill unarmed black people, so there is a power imbalance. Therefore, we must emphasize the value of black life. A PROTESTER FROM THE FOURMILE MARCH, VIA EMAIL

Arizona-bound Patriots tore up ‘title contenders’ Super Bowl. Against top competition this season, the Patriots have simply thrived.

The Patriots played like a team that belongs in the Super Bowl this past Sunday. The Colts, well. … Andrew Luck is a promising young player. Making good teams look awful is something these Patriots have done all season. They are battle-tested, having gone through a brutally tough stretch of the schedule against some the league’s best teams, and winning most of them. The Patriots crushed the Bears, Broncos, Colts, and Lions. Off a narrow loss to the Packers in Green Bay, they beat the Chargers in San Diego. Regardless of how these teams looked at the end of their respective seasons, they were tough outs at the time. In the divisional round, the Ravens gave it their all, too. It’s those games that have built the Patriots into a powerhouse with just one game left to play. “Yeah, I think as hard as it was week after week — we had about a six, sevenweek stretch there where it seemed like every team was at the top of their division and playing really well,” head

Road to the desert The Patriots hit their peak during late October and early November when they averaged 45.3 points per game in wins over the Bears, Broncos and Colts. •

coach Bill Belichick said. “In the end it probably served us well. We had great competition all year. We played a lot of really good football teams and some great defenses, great defensive lines, front sevens, some great quarterbacks, great receivers. So,

yeah, it was a very competitive schedule. “Our guys had to prepare and work really hard every week to be ready for those challenges. They did that. They were relentless in their preparation. Now as we’re grinding into the postseason it’s more of the same. But they’re used to it, they’ve done it and they did a great job of it this week.” What about the Seahawks? Have they had a similar grind? Not quite. Their run to the postseason was different than the Patriots’, despite similar success. After starting the year 6-4, Seattle rattled off six straight wins to close the season — but hold on. Those teams included Arizona twice, San Francisco twice, Philadelphia and St. Louis. Philadelphia aside, those are some terrific defenses, but very bad offenses. Ryan Lindley, Colin Kaepernick, and Shaun Hill don’t exactly scream competition at the quarterback position. Tom Brady? He screams plenty out there. Yes, the Seahawks defense is scary — just ask the Packers. But Seattle hasn’t seen a team more prepared for combat than these Patriots are. Super Bowl. ‘Deflate-gate’ rages on, NFL to rule on matter later this week “Deflate-gate” began when Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson gave the ball he had just intercepted in Sunday’s AFC Championship game to a member of the Indianapolis equipment staff, according to Newsday. The Colts assistant reportedly noticed that the ball was not fully inflated and let head coach Chuck Pagano know of the situation. Colts general manager Ryan Grigson was also told about the allegedly deflated ball and he contacted NFL director of football

operations Mike Kensil. Pro Football Talk reported Tuesday that the league’s investigation into the matter will be completed within the next two to three days. The Super Bowl-bound Patriots are shrugging off the allegations as Tom Brady laughed at the matter on WEEI radio and Rob Gronkowski posted a picture on Twitter of himself spiking a football with a caption that read: “Warning Gronking may cause deflation.”

D’Qwell Jackson intercepted Tom Brady early in the second quarter.

Jeff Green is averaging 14.8 points and 5.3 rebounds for the Grizzlies through four games, during which the Griz are 3-1.

Give credit to Blake Griffin, who is now so much more than the high-flyer he was upon entering the league. Dude can shoot now.

The Suns are shopping Miles Plumlee, according to ESPN, and are looking for a future first-round pick in return for the big man.

James Harden is the best scorer in the NBA this season (27.1 ppg) and he’s fresh off a 45-point performance against the Pacers.

It didn’t take long for Kawhi Leonard to show his worth. In two games back, the Spurs beat the Blazers, then held Utah to just 69 points.

Uh-oh. Trouble in Chi-Town. The Bulls have lost six of their last eight, including four to contenders in the Eastern Conference.

You have to like what you’ve seen out of the Wizards so far. Two big wins over the Eastern Conference rival Bulls to help send Chicago into a tailspin.

DeMar DeRozan is back after missing 21 games. He’s played four, scoring over 20 points in his first three. Monday? A big fat zero on 0-for-9 shooting.

The Thunder were in Miami Tuesday looking to go over .500 on the season. There’s only one way to do it: execution. Gotta execute.

Whether it’s Chris Bosh or Dwyane Wade, the Heat have had a hard time staying healthy. That helps explain why their offense is horrid.
