City and state shut down in wake of snowstorm Juno Blizzard. The state has battened down the hatches, closing schools and prohibiting nonemergency vehicles from the roads. Massachusetts expects to spend most of Tuesday hunkering down under a snowstorm of historic proportions, with public transportation shut and citizens ordered to stay home. Forecasters say the storm, at its height will pound the commonwealth with up to four inches of snow an hour at times. Some areas could see two to three feet of accumulation. The National Weather Service’s blizzard warning is not expected to be lifted until 1 a.m. Wednesday. Gov. Charlie Baker announced the MBTA was shut down from midnight Monday. There will be no Tuesday service. Baker, facing the first blizzard of his tenure, ordered a statewide travel ban beginning Monday night. Travel, according to public safety officials, will be “virtually impossible.” At noon Monday, Baker declared a state of emergency for Massachusetts. Schools have closed throughout the region and public safety officials warned of lengthy power outages throughout the state. “We’re taking this storm very seriously,” said Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. Calling the incoming storm “crippling and potentially historic,” officials said the blizzard could dump as much as

Hernandez. Jury seated for ex-NFL star’s murder trial, to begin Thursday Jury selection was completed Monday in Fall River in the trial of former Patriots player Aaron Hernandez, charged with killing a semiprofessional football player near his home in June 2013. A jury of five men and 13 women were seated after more than two weeks of selection. Opening statements are set for Thursday. The trial may last six to 10 weeks in Fall River, Massachusetts. Hernandez, 25, is accused of killing Odin Lloyd, whose body was found in an industrial park near Hernandez’s North Attleborough home on June 17, 2013. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty. Potential jurors, selected from a pool of some 1,100 candidates, were asked to fill out questionnaires that asked whether they were Patriots fans. Hernandez appeared with his lawyers in court on Monday wearing a jacket and
tie, as Lloyd’s mother looked on from the gallery. The former tight end had a $41 million contract with the Patriots when he was arrested and cut from the team days after Lloyd’s bulletriddled body was discovered. Lloyd, 27, had been dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins. Prosecutors say he and Hernandez had argued after Lloyd socialized at a nightclub with people Hernandez disliked. Two of Hernandez’s friends, Ernest Wallace and Carlos Ortiz, were also arrested in the slaying and will be tried separately. They have also pleaded not guilty. In a separate case, Hernandez has been accused of shooting two Cape Verdean nationals outside a Boston nightclub in 2012. He has pleaded not guilty to those charges as well. REUTERS

Storm stalls tedious Tsarnaev jury selection Fair trial. The judge and attorneys are having trouble finding a jury. The hunt for jurors in the trial of accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev continued Monday with no sign that Judge George O’Toole, prosecutors and defense attorneys had found a panel of impartial candidates. Opening arguments, set for Monday, have been postponed indefinitely, and a massive snowstorm that will close the courthouse tomorrow will further delay the trial. Nearly 200 prospective jurors were questioned Monday, many giving thoughtful and seemingly honestly feedback about their stance on the death penalty. If jurors find Tsarnaev guilty, they will be tasked with

sentencing him to either life in prison or execution. The 185th juror to be questioned, a single mother who works in risk management, said she believes the right to a fair and impartial trial is “probably the most important right we as individuals have.” She said she favored a life in prison ruling over execution, but not for humanitar-
ian reasons. “To be thrown in with the dregs of society, to live the rest of your life with rapists and murderers to me is a fate much worse than death. We all face death,” she said. “I don’t think that death is necessarily the greatest punishment of them all.” Juror 186, also a woman, said she formed her opinion
of Tsarnaev’s guilt based on surveillance video made public after the bombings. The video allegedly showed Tsarnaev and his brother carrying backpacks near the Boylston Street finish line. “The fact that he was literally right there with a gun in hand” during a Watertown shootout days after the bombing influenced her. She said she could bring herself to vote in favor of the death penalty. Tsarnaev appeared bored and detached in court — even when the discussion turned to his possible execution. Wearing a dark jacket, his hair appeared shorter than in previous court dates. Occasionally he wrote on a yellow legal pad as jurors were questioned. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Deflate-gate flap doesn’t negate hopes of Pats’ fans hates Boston because of our sports teams.” Collins was among the hundreds who braved the freezing temperatures and light snow flurries to send the Patriots off to Glendale, Arizona. Some waved placards that stated “Do Your Job.” House of Pain blared on the PA. A collection of captains, including quarterback Tom Brady, addressed the crowd, thanking them for their support. A siege mentality — exacerbated by recent allegations of illicit ball doctoring — permeated the crowd. “When you’re on top everyone wants to bring you down,” said Cory Fonteyne, 27, a UNH student from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. “They hate us ’cause they ain’t us. That’s how it is.”
Send-off. Hundreds defy the wintry weather to wish Tom Brady and the rest of the Pats the best of luck in Super Bowl XLIX. Tom Collins reflected the mood that was in the frigid air at Boston’s City Hall Plaza late Monday morning. Yes, said the 48-yearold ironworker from Weymouth, the New England Patriots would beat the Seattle Seahawks in Sunday’s Super Bowl. No, Deflate-gate was not a big deal. No, the Pats didn’t cheat. Why was it getting attention? That’s easy: “Everyone loves to hate this town,” he said. “It’s been us against the world here in Boston for a long time,” he said. “Everyone

Critical characteristics to have in 2015 Everyone wants to be rich and successful, but what are you willing to do to achieve your goals? Here are three attributes with which I have had success.
No. 1: Brutal honesty Full transparency and admitting that you’re not perfect go a long way in helping your career blossom, mainly because so few people are willing to share everything. It’s also a lot less stressful to live honestly and transparently. I even post my tax returns online so people can see how much money I make.
No. 2: Ambition There’s no better time than the present to be ambitious as the Internet and its related apps open up amazing opportunities that didn’t exist just a few years ago. Even if you know nothing about technology, you just have to research feverishly and think about common problems that people have and how they can be solved by a website, app or some other form of technology. Websites are very easy to create and if you’re ambitious enough to try, it’s almost inevitable that you will find a subject people will love. Remember, I was just a penny stock trader for over a decade until I was featured

No. 3: Flexibility Despite the Internet’s massive opportunity, your first idea, or maybe even second or third or fourth might not be a huge hit. Sometimes you must fail over and over and over, learning what not to do in business and in life before you find success. But there’s no shame in failing, as I’ve talked about in the past.

For exclusive commentary, visit Metro.us/blogs. Being flexible and adaptable to refine your passion and your projects until you make them perfect is what’s most needed in today’s world. Too often, people fail once or twice and give up entirely, even if they were getting close to success or were on the right track. Don’t be so rigid; success and achieving your goals is not black or white. There are many shades of gray in between. Being flexible and adapting while you’re pursuing success will help you get there eventually.

Emma Watson is going to be a Disney princess What with all the speeches at the United Nations and in Davos about feminism, you might have thought Emma Watson was not so interested in acting anymore. You would be wrong. Walt Disney Studios confirms that the “Harry Potter” star will star as Belle in its upcoming live-action adaptation of “Beauty and the Beast,” directed by “Dreamgirls” director Bill Condon. And honestly, given her public persona, if she was going to play any Disney princess this is the right one, given Belle’s book smarts and independence. So, just so everyone’s clear: Emma Watson, still a burgeoning feminist icon, but also a Disney princess.

Can we not focus on a 16-year-old sitcom star’s cleavage? “Modern Family” star Ariel Winter, a 16-year-old actress, hit the red carpet for the SAG Awards this weekend in a very lovely white gown. ‘So much wig work’ ahead on ‘The Americans’ Interview. Keri Russell promises the disguises on her dark spy drama will continue to amaze. Put on your finest wig and practice your fake accent: FX’s “The Americans returns Wednesday for its third season. Otherwise known as “that show that makes you root for Communist Russia, this season finds Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Philip (Matthew Rhys) Jennings facing one of their biggest challenges: whether or not to tell their daughter Paige that they’re Soviet sleeper agents. Paige started to suspect something was up with her parents last season, and this season will see that issue continue to arise. “The biggest thing for this season is that Elizabeth and Philip are at very opposing sides on how to deal with their daughter, says Keri Russell. But don’t expect Paige to start joining on missions. “Just to be clear, it wouldn’t be that she would become a spy, Russell is quick to add. “There would be many steps, many facets, the first of which being that she finds out who we are, and is she ready for that? While Philip hopes to keep Paige in the dark as long as possible, Elizabeth takes a different tack. “Elizabeth feels a desperate need and want for her daughter to know who they are, because if you didn’t know who you were, how would you move throughout the world? asks Russell. Don’t force it: There’s no set amount of time a child needs to practice their instrument, says Lewis. “Even as little as 10-to-15 minutes a day is enough practice time, particularly for the younger students, she adds. The most important thing, says Lewis, is to create a passion for music. “We want them to fall for an instrument, she says. “We want it to be love at first sight.

PARENTING
How to make practicing fun Extra-curriculars. Follow these expert tips and it won’t feel like homework. Signing up your child for music lessons is a great way to foster both creativity and structure in their lives. But as many parents know, getting an aspiring student to practice consistently can be challenging in the best of times. Valerie Lewis, executive director of the Third Street Music School Settlement in Manhattan, shares her tips for families who want their children to have fun while creating music:
1
Don’t hide the instruments: “The easier it is to get to the instrument, the better, says Lewis. “Keep the keys open on the piano or get a music stand so that your child
can grab it whenever they are inspired.
2
Throw mini-concerts: “My son is 6 and we line up his stuffed animals and he performs for them. ... He’s getting comfortable with the idea of performing, Lewis says, adding that one of her favorite things about the school is it encourages students to perform for small groups regularly. “They can perform their piece in a comfortable setting that’s a little bit more casual, she says.
3
Make it a family aair: “Play with your child,â€? says Lewis. “I’ve seen it here with parents playing the same instrument as their child and it’s very beneficial. They’re making music together.â€? LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi lakshmi.gandhi@metro.us

Mug shots stigmatize black men, give wrong impression Quit publishing mug shots, please. Arrest suspects do not deserve fame, just trials. Endless mug shots feed stereotypes of dangerous black males. This raises public fear of black men, and barriers to their employment. Philadelphia’s working-age, male unemployment rate is over
Capricorn | Dec. 22-Jan. 20 You can expect opposition from those you live with. Don’t argue; just make your own plans to do things with friends. Don’t make changes to your living quarters unless everyone is in favor of your ideas. EUGENIA LAST

Re: The Hopeless Romantic’ (Metro, Jan. 23-25) With all due respect, this paper is getting trashy. Not one article about the March for Life, which was a weeklong event in our state capital, yet in the Weekend edition, the front cover has a half-naked picture of Jennifer Lopez. If it’s not Kim K’s butt, it’s J-Lo’s boobs. Give me a break!!

50 percent in many neighborhoods. We can’t buy enough police and prisons to control the frustration of people who are unable honorably to feed their families. Yet jobs fight crime better than police can. So rather than headline street crime, celebrate solutions. The media should feature the enterprise of average Philadelphians. Thousands of us, for example, are creating jobs that rebuild our city toward balance with nature. We deserve the pictures and stories, as we plant, build, teach and heal.

NHL power rankings | by Rich Slate No. 1
No. 2
Ducks (31-10-6) The Ducks entered the AllStar break with the most points in the NHL and they are tied for the longest current win steak (five games). Anaheim is 8-2-0 in its last 10 and it looks like a good bet to grab the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference for the playoffs. They start the second half at Vancouver.

No. 11
Predators (30-10-5)
Blues (29-13-4)
Canadiens (29-13-3)
Rangers (27-13-4)
When Pekka Rinne is healthy, the Predators are certainly in the discussion for top NHL team. But who knows where they’ll go with Rinne injured?
If the Predators slip up, as I expect, the Blues are in perfect position to overtake them. St. Louis is 7-2-1 in its last 10 games.
If the Lightning or Red Wings struggle, the Canadiens are right there to move up in the Atlantic Division standings.
It’s hard not to like the way the Rangers are playing: they are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games and won three straight heading into the break.

Red Wings (27-11-9)
Penguins (26-12-8)
Capitals (24-13-9)
Tampa Bay pretty much led the Eastern Conference from wireto-wire in the first half. They have the best goal differential in the East at plus-29.
The Red Wings are playing great hockey. They have won their last five games, are 8-2-0 in their last 10 and are one point behind Tampa Bay.
Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin both skipped the AllStar Game with injuries. Pittsburgh fans will have to hope those aren’t serious.
Another club that is performing at a high level is the Caps. Washington is 6-2-2 in its last 10 games and it is at Columbus Tuesday.

Islanders (31-14-1)
Blackhawks (30-15-2)
Jets (26-14-8)
Bruins (25-16-7)
In terms of exceeding first-half expectations, it’s hard to beat the Islanders. The only question now is, can keep this amazing pace up?
Chicago has the best goal-differential in the NHL at plus-40 and could surge in the second half. The ’Hawks won their last two games prior to the break.
Winnipeg is hot, having won its last five games heading into the break. The Jets own the best road record in the NHL at 14-5-5.
The B’s got three out of a possible four points in their backto-back on the road heading into the break. Boston is 6-1-3 in its last 10 games.

Super Bowl. Report: NFL ‘zeroes in’ on Pats attendant in Deflate-gate scandal According to a report by Jay Glazer of Fox Sports on Monday, there is surveillance video from the Jan. 18 AFC Championship Game of a Patriots locker room attendant taking footballs from the official’s locker room into another room at Gillette Stadium before bringing them out on to the field. According to the report, the NFL has “zeroed in” on one particular Patriots locker room attendant and the person of interest has already been interviewed by the league. The NFL is attempting to determine “whether any wrongdoing by this individual occurred,” the report stated.

CLASSIFIEDS Russell Wilson, right, came out on top in his only game against Tom Brady to date. / GETTY IMAGES
It’s solely about the W’s for both Brady and Wilson Super Bowl XLIX. Russell Wilson, like Tom Brady, has won early and often in his pro career. It’s hard not to see a little bit of Tom Brady in Seahawks QB Russell Wilson. OK, so maybe the 5-foot11, 205-pound Russell and the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Brady don’t have the same build. And maybe they don’t quite have the same style of play. OK, they really don’t have the same style of play. But here’s one thing they have in common: The two have won enormous games early in their careers. You already know Brady is a three-time Super Bowl champion, having won all three titles in the first five seasons of his career. Wilson won his first Super Bowl last season, his second in the NFL. Now, he’s looking to repeat.
The two also had staunch defenses behind them at the times of their championships — but that’s beside the point. Brady was a sixth-rounder, while Wilson was taken in the third round. Both had their fair share of doubters, something that will always drive them. “Tom [Brady]’s past history has been so widely known and understood that what an extraordinary pick he has become, the all-time championship guy,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. “It will be interesting in the next couple weeks —they have the commonality of being two guys that are great winners. Russell and Tom are great winners. Tom has had a long time to prove that, Russell is at the early stages of proving that to the world, but I think he’s got a chance to be similar.” From a personal standpoint, Brady doesn’t have much else to prove. He’ll go down as an all-time great quarterback, but make no mistake about it — he’s not satisfied with three

rings. One more will put him at the top of the top in lots of people’s eyes. And Brady has no plans on hanging them up anytime soon. The 37-year-old is confident in his abilities even as he quickly approaches the age of 40. That confidence is another trait shared between Brady and Wilson. “[Russell’s confidence] comes from great belief in himself,” Carroll said. “He has great confidence, and he trusts that, and he’s not going to let anything change that.” JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will speak to the media in his annual “State of the League” address later this week. MATT BURKE
The NFL is not expected to make a ruling on Deflategate until after Super Bowl XLIX between the Patriots and Seahawks on Sunday.
