New Englanders are digging out from under a blizzard dumped more than 2 feet of snow in some areas of Massachusetts and paralyzed travel statewide, according to the National Weather Service. The snow was expected to end around 1 a.m. Wednesday in Boston, but crews were expected to spend most of the day clearing the roads of snow. Tuesday afternoon, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh encouraged employers to allow their workers to work from home on Wednesday if possible. The storm, which began Monday night and lasted through the day on Tuesday, dumped more than 21 inches of snow in Boston, according to the National Weather Service’s report Tuesday afternoon. High winds battered the eastern parts of the state, with gusts topping 50 mph.
The winds, coupled with the snow, caused power outages throughout the state. The travel ban, which was ordered by Gov. Charlie Baker and began midnight Monday, was lifted for the entire state at midnight Tuesday; it had been lifted 12 hours prior for the state’s western counties. Nonemergency personnel are being encouraged to stay off the roads. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said the city saw no major storm-related incidents during Monday night into early Tuesday morning. The MBTA
was shut down for the day, but the T was expected to be back at full, regular service on Wednesday. Dozens of flights flying into or out of Logan have been canceled. The city’s parking ban is still in effect until further notice. More than 26,000 utility customers lost power in the state. Most of the power outages have occurred along the shoreline, including the South Shore, South Coast and Cape Cod. As of 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, more than 18,000 NSTAR customers were with-
out power. Central Square in Cambridge was a ghost town. Most of the stores were closed. A single man could be seen cross-country skiing across Mass Ave. The only cars on the road were public works plow trucks, their beds loaded down with either sand or salt or piles of chunky snow. Drifts on the sidewalk were thigh deep. Some cars were covered, their windshield wipers poking through a blanket of several inches. A few hearty residents heaved snow from the sidewalks into the middle of the road or from their driveways onto the sidewalks. Adrian Mott’s office was closed because of the weather, and he expected to spend hours clearing his driveway and shoveling his Subaru Forester out. While car travel was banned, his dog, Millie, a labrottweiler mix, was frolicking in the snow, jumping up on passersby and playing with teens who were shoveling a car out down the block. “It’s kind of nice with the travel ban, you can let the dog out to run around and don’t have to worry about the cars,” Mott said.
Juno’s impact •
T service stopped at midnight Monday and was suspended for all day Tuesday. As of Tuesday night, the MBTA expected to return to full service on Wednesday.
•
Travel ban: Gov. Charlie Baker issued a travel ban, barring nonemergency personnel from traveling starting at midnight Monday. He lifted the ban 12 hours later for the state’s western counties.
•
The ban for the rest of the state was lifted at midnight Tuesday.
•
Schools throughout the region were canceled on Tuesday. Most, including Boston public schools, have also canceled school on Wednesday.
•
The parking ban is in effect until further notice.

Young and homeless in South Station’s warmth Survival. The closing of several homeless shelters has left many on the streets. “I’m just trying to get some rest first before I go panhandle. But I’m really scared to go out there,” said Jade Hosie, 23, as she set up her bedding on the floor in front of South Station’s ticketing area. “There’s really nowhere to go. We knew it was going to be open at North and South Station, so we came here and we’re just staying warm.” The young transient was one of a few dozen people taking shelter at South Station on Tuesday as a storm of epic proportions bore down on the city, dumping more than a foot of snow onto the region by midday. Hosie has been living on the streets of Boston for more than two years, surviving two frigid winters. Tuesday was not her

first time camping out in South Station, and it won’t be her last. The closure in October of Boston’s largest homeless housing facilities on Long Island displaced hundreds of homeless just in time for the frigid months. Hosie said she had sought shelter at a few Boston-area shelters, but there were no beds available. She was hungry, and hopeful that she would be able to catch some sleep before being booted from the station. “On a normal day the police harass us if we’re tired, they’ll
just say, ‘Wake up,’ or tell us to move. But everything is shut down, so they can’t tell us what to do today,” said Hosie. Hosie, originally from Niagara Falls, New York, said she has found Massachusetts to be one of the worst states in terms of its helping of the homeless. “We help each other,” said Hosie. “We give food and the shirt off our backs to each other.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Juno’s cost
Juno: Less deadly, but still expensive When the numbers get crunched, shutting down an entire city, including mass transit, can cost taxpayers millions of dollars. A 2014 study from IHS Global Insight shows a severe winter storm can have a major impact on the city’s budget. According to the
A T bus in Boston. NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
study, it can cost a city the size of New York as much as $300-700 million just for a one-day shutdown. And that’s only talking about shuttered businesses and impassable roads. If public transportation stops running for a full day, the cost can reach billions of dollars. In a study from 2013, over 2 million people will ride the
New York City subway system on an average weekday. Buses will transport over 400,000 riders. That’s more than $10 million a day in lost transit revenue. Add to that lost salaries and pay for hourly or shift workers, and lost spending by workers who stay home, and cities can spend weeks recovering from a single snow day. METRO

Bostonians celebrate a snow day Juno’s legacy. Sledding, skiing, slipping and sliding is how the city spent Tuesday. There’s no denying that Snowstorm Juno walloped Boston, but despite the power outages, travel headaches and shoveling, the blustery blizzard did something magical. It turned the city into a snowball-loving, all-bundledup, slipping-around-like-we don’t-give-a-damn winter wonderland. A travel and parking ban meant anyone brave enough to bare boots and venture out on Boston’s white-coated streets had free reign to release their inner child. Roommates Jennifer Xia, 24, Lex Verwick, 24, Charlie Yaeger, 25, and Ray Xi, 23, laughed without abandon as they climbed atop a snow pile on Boylston Street, corner pelting each other with oversize Quoted

snow balls and slipping facefirst down the 10-foot mound. “We’re having a snow day. Not working. We just decided to come out and have some fun,” said Yaeger, gearing up to chuck another ball of perfect snow at his friends. “I don’t think it takes a lot to bring out our inner children,” added Yaeger. On Massachusetts Avenue, Berkeley School of Music student Brandon Hassan, 18, patrolled the streets with his bright orange sled — a recent purchase he made specifically for Juno. “I’ve seen snow before, but never like this,” said the Dallas native, lamenting his fellow students’ lack of playfulness. Robbie Nicholas, 22, strode confidently on his cross-country skis near the Longfellow Bridge. Nicholas said he had skied from Porter Square in Cambridge, about three miles away - and that he had seen plenty of others on their skis. “I cross-country skied in upstate New York, so I thought I’d carry on the tradition,” said Nicholas. “It’s been great. It’s perfect when there’s just about an inch of snow on the road.” Turn to the next page to see more photos of the snowstorm’s aftermath. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

If You Own or Owned Land Under or Next to Railroad Rights of Way in Massachusetts Where Fiber-Optic Cable Was Installed You Could Receive Money from a Class Action Settlement A Settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit challenging the installation of fiber-optic cable within railroad Rights of Way. Under the Settlement, Sprint, CenturyLink (formerly Qwest), or WilTel (together called the “Defendants”) will pay valid claims for persons in Massachusetts who own or owned land next to or under railroad Rights of Way where fiber-optic cable owned by Sprint, CenturyLink, or WilTel is buried. Who Is Included? Class Members include current or previous owners of land next to or under a railroad Right of Way at any time since the cable was installed in the following Massachusetts counties: Berkshire, Bristol, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Worcester. To find where the Rights of Way included in the Settlement are located and when fiber-optic cable was installed in a particular Right of Way, visit www.FiberOpticSettlements.com/Massachusetts. If you still have questions, call 1-800-419-5232. What Are the Proposed Settlement Terms? Class Members who submit a valid claim will receive cash based on factors that include: (a) the length of the Right of Way where the cable is installed, (b) the length of time they owned the property, and (c) the current status of the railroad right of way. The Settlement provides Defendants with a permanent Telecommunications Easement. The Easement will grant any rights the Defendants don’t already have to use the Rights of Way for Telecommunications Facilities. What Are Class Member Rights? • If you stay in the Class, you will have an opportunity to claim cash benefits. You will be bound by the decisions of the Court. You can’t sue Defendants or the railroads in the future for any claims in this lawsuit, and a Telecommunications Easement will be granted on the railroad Right of Way next to or through your property. If you think you are a member of the Class, but did not receive a mailed notice, call 1-800-419-5232. • You can exclude yourself from the Class. This means you cannot file a claim for cash benefits but will keep the right to sue the Defendants in the future. • If you stay in the Class, you can object to all or part of the Settlement. • Exclusions and objections must be filed in writing by March 9, 2015. Who Represents Class Members? Class Counsel have been appointed by the Court to represent you. They will request an award of attorneys’ fees, to be paid by Defendants. If you wish, you or your own attorney may ask to appear and speak at the hearing at your own cost. See the website for more information on attorneys’ fees. Will an Approval Hearing Be Held? The Court will hold a hearing on April 8, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. to decide whether to give final approval to the Settlement.

Rescued Army captive Bowe Bergdahl to face desertion charges: NBC Current duties. Bergdahl is stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, where he is working as a clerk. U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl will be charged with desertion for disappearing from his base in Afghanistan in 2009, NBC News reported on Tuesday. Emile Hirsch in a fight?
Ned Ehrbar takes on the world of gossip. NED EHRBAR

Things apparently got more than a little heated at a Sundance after-party for actor Emile Hirsch and an unidentified female Paramount Pictures executive. The altercation reportedly took place early Monday morning at Tao’s pop-up club at the film festival. “Something happened between the movie exec and Emile, and she said she had been assaulted and asked security to call the police,” a source tells Page Six. “Emile didn’t leave the scene, and calmly waited for the police to arrive, and spoke with them until around 5 a.m., after which he went home with his friends. No arrests were made.” That could change, though, as Salt Lake City police are said to still be investigating the matter.
This doc has all the juicy details of their breakup. / ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES
We all knew Alex Gibney’s new Scientology documentary, “Going Clear,” was going to be controversial. But even still, some of the details coming out are pretty astounding. For instance, when Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise initially separat-
ed, Cruise reportedly wanted Church operatives to bug her cellphone due to fears that she would divulge secrets about the organization. And about that breakup? It was apparently “facilitated” by former Church official Marty Rathburn. How helpful!

It’s not often that a network drama can be compared to Shakespeare, but Fox’s “Empire quickly drew comparisons to the plot of “King Lear. The story of hip-hop magnate Lucious Lyon has some obvious parallels to “Lear, given Lucious’ concerns about his mortality and which of his three sons is most qualified to inherit the kingdom. But one way the show strays from Shakespeare is in the character of Cookie, Lucious’ ex-wife and a recent parolee. Played with verve and powerful presence by Taraji P. Henson, Cookie shakes up the established order of the world of “Empire
by managing the career of her talented son Jamal, whose gayness is a constant issue for his father. Cookie always seems to own the room when she comes in. How do you play that? Who doesn’t want to walk in a room and own it? There are moments when I feel like I can’t and then I punk out. I’m like, everybody’s going to look at me. That’s Taraji. Cookie doesn’t care. She doesn’t have anything to lose. She was a prisoner for 17 years, living with some of the most horrible humans on the planet. So she knows how to walk in and own a room. You don’t get many second chances in life. She and Lucious seem to still have some chemistry. Will we see them get closer? There’s a history between them that you cannot deny. Also, there’s unfin-
Interview. Alan Cumming is happy that ‘Strange Magic’ portrays handsome princes as boring Alan Cumming is a renaissance man: an actor, writer, director, singer and author. He’ll do button-pushing works, like reprising his legendary Master of Ceremonies role in “Cabaretâ€? on Broadway, but also do children’s films. The animated “Strange Magicâ€? is of the latter: a loose cartoon rendition of “A Midsummer Night’s Dreamâ€? filled with a “Moulin Rougeâ€?-like carousel of pop hits. In it he voices a hideous villain — and the clear romantic partner of a pretty fairy (voiced by Evan Rachel Wood). But even that, in the world of animated film, is pretty subversive. You’ve done a fair amount of voice work. Was there anything dierent about this one? It took so long. We shot over a period of four years. But I didn’t go in that often. It’s like having an affair with someone. And then eventually you get married. You’re at your wedding and everyone’s asking you questions and you
don’t really know each other. One thing that’s really refreshing about “Strange Magic is it subverts the cartoon norm, where the pretty girl gets together with the handsome prince and the ugly, or at least less conventionally attractive, characters get nothing. I was talking earlier today about “Frozen, where the handsome prince is a d—. And he’s a d— in this one as well. I think this trend of telling young women that the glittery ones might not be the ones to look at — or don’t let the hot boys fool you. Maybe the other ones are kinder. Animated films, especially the Disney ones, are about patriarchal systems. The mother’s always dead, the heroine gets the guy but has to change something. She gets to no longer be a mermaid, but she can’t sing. There’s always a punishment inflicted on the woman
Bonus question
Did the film change at all over such a long production time? Things change, and they forget to tell you some song or some character is cut. In the finished film Maya Rudolph’s character is my mom. She wasn’t my mom before. She was just a person in my cave. And there was one version of the story, from several years ago, where at the end [his and Wood’s characters] sort of got together but they sort of didn’t, and she went backpacking. That was hilarious.

NASA-Approved LASIK - Our all-laser, bladeless LASIK at New England Eye Center has greatly improved results and helped take the fear out of having LASIK. The vast majority of our LASIK and PRK patients now achieve 20/20 vision at distance without glasses or contact lenses. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots.

Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lens-like device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time.

‘Big Design, Small Budget’ Decorate. Fake high-end living with designer Betsy Helmuth’s tips. Interior designer Betsy Helmuth doesn’t design for celebrities. Her firm, Affordable Interior Design, is all about creating fabulous spaces for people with realistic budgets. “Our clients have their eye on the bottom line,â€? Helmuth says. “And most of them are renters, so they’re wondering, ‘How much do we invest in a space that we’re not going to be in forever?’â€? Helmuth says. “So if you make the thing that’s on top of the bed really decadent you can save on the things around it like the sheets and nightstands.â€? Pick a patterned rug Forget that cream Beni Ourain you have your eye on. “Pick a rug with a lively patter,” Helmuth says. And by that she means a floor covering with three colors or more. “Patterns conceal pet and party stains better than solid or more simple ones,” explains the designer. “If you have people over, you don’t have to worry about them spilling red wine or a juice box on the rug.” Another bonus: “A lot of us can’t afford really great art, so a big area rug can serve as that visual interest,” she says.

and my doctor recommends that the prostrate be removed and I will undergo the procedure next month. I have been tested for the disease over the last 10 years and had a low PSA rating, but failed to get the test in 2013 and that could have made the difference. Now I have to undergo a more aggressive procedure. I guess I thought I was too busy for a physical check-up. I therefore urge all men to get tested over the age of 55 to get tested. Prostrate cancer is most curable when treated early.
I would like to express my views on prostrate cancer, a common male affliction. This can be a dangerous disease when undiscovered, misdiagnosed and left untreated. About 30,000 men will die nationwide this year from prostrate cancer, and one out of seven will develop this disease, as reported by North Shore/ LIJ information division. The answer is early detection and treatment. I understand that only too well. I have just been diagnosed last week with an aggressive prostrate cancer
Re: ‘Racism is a widespread problem’ (Metro, Jan. 26) In attempting to defend last Thursday’s letter by John McLaughlin, letter writers Steere and Pond ironically highlight the key difference between the murders of Michael Brown and Eric Gardner, and that of Patricia Moran and Deborah Royal. The killers of Moran and Royal were caught, arrested, and will face prosecution; the killers of Brown and Gardner, despite being clearly identified and having

ample physical evidence and eye-witness testimony of their actions, were let go without ever being arrested, nevermind prosecuted. The silence of the killer’s respective communities against their crimes may not reflect well on it members, but you can’t argue the families of Brown and Gardner aren’t entitled to the same justice the Moran and Royal families will see. Pats may go to ground and pound vs. Seattle Super Bowl XLIX. Seattle has shown signs that it can be run on this postseason. Few would argue with the statement that Seattle has the best defense in the NFL. In the regular season, the Seahawks gave up the fewest yards, had the No. 1 passing defense and No. 3 rush defense. As such, the defending Super Bowl champions really don’t have a weakness on that side of the ball. But if you had to choose a way to attack it, New England appears — on paper at least — to be better suited to try and run on them rather than force Tom Brady to throw 40-plus passes against their superb secondary.
Mild success The Seattle run defense this postseason: •
Packers RB Eddie Lacy had 73 yards rushing in the NFC title game. Green Bay ran for 135 yards as a team.
•
Carolina’s Jonathan Stewart had 70 yards rushing in the divisional round. The Panthers ran for 132 yards.
This is assuming that All-Pro safety Earl Thomas (shoulder) and All-Pro corner Richard Sherman (elbow) both play and are relatively effective. The health of Thomas and Sherman is very important to the Patriots in terms of game planning. Then
again, it’s hard to predict what OC Josh McDaniels will cook up on Sunday (6:30 p.m., NBC) in Glendale, Arizona. New England’s previous two games this postseason couldn’t be more different. Against Baltimore, the Patriots fell behind early and had to abandon the run pretty quickly as it proved completely ineffective (14 total rushing yards) against the Ravens’ top-notch run defense. Indianapolis, on the other hand, was simply overmatched. LeGarrette Blount dominated the Colts last year in the playoffs and he did the same thing in the AFC title game with 148 rushing yards and three touchdowns. RICH SLATE @RichSlate
