BOSTON What’s the meaning of the Super Bowl?

“There’s all sorts of talk about Deflategate and about how everyone does it, but we’re the ones who get caught. This game’s important because it can establish Bill Belichick and Tom Brady as the greatest of all time. A win does that, definitely. A loss would really hurt because Deflate-gate would be blown even further out of proportion.”

As the Patriots prepare take on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX Sunday night, Boston law enforcement is preparing to take on crowds of sports who are expected to get rowdy regardless of the outcome. Thousands of Bostonians are expected to hit the sports bars early in the day to stake out their seats, surrounded by beer and big-screen TVs. But like many bars, Poe’s Kitchen at The Rattlesnake in the Back Bay will be taking precautions in the name of safe

celebration. “We are expecting upwards of 400 people, and of course we will have security personnel to make sure everything is under control,” said Poet’s Kitchen General Manager Chris Sheridan. During big-game events, bars often restrict access after halftime. A lot of times, they will cover windows so fans won’t congregate outside the bars to peer through the windows to watch the games on the big-screen televisions. “The last thing the city wants is people loitering out front,” said Sheridan. “The city asks that once people leave we don’t allow readmittance. We try to follow all the rules and regulations the city of Boston requires.”

Experience from the 2005 Super Bowl and multiple World Series events informed the agency’s plan with additional officers at Kenmore and North stations as well as other central T stations.

Massachusetts State Police, the Boston Police Department and MBTA Transit Police say they’ll put an undisclosed number of extra cops on patrol for gameday out of an abundance of caution. “Like everyone, we’re hopeful and anticipating a Pats victory,” said MBTA Transit Police Lt. Richard Sullivan. “With that always comes celebration. We just ask that people be respectful and not get carried away, and to show the true professionalism of a Pats fan.” State police spokesman David Procopio said the department is finalizing its operations plan. The answer to the question no one is asking about Super Bowl is yes. As in, yes, you can bet on whether Lenny Kravitz will expose his junk to the world during his halftime performance. The Super Bowl brings out

Hernandez holds gun in video shown at trial Fall River. Opening statements in Aaron Hernandez’s murder trial kicked off Thursday. The trial of former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez got underway in a Fall River Superior Court Thursday afternoon after a brief delay due to a late juror. Hernandez, 25, is on trial for the June 2013 shooting death of Odin Lloyd, 27, of Dorchester. Lloyd, was a semiprofessional football player. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to shooting Lloyd dead in an industrial park near Hernandez’s home in the affluent community of North Attleboro. Prosecutors contend Hernandez wanted to keep Lloyd quiet about a double murder Hernandez allegedly carried out in July 2012 in Boston’s South End. “Odin Lloyd was shot six times. He was killed and he was left in a secluded area,” Assistant District Attorney Patrick Bomberg told jurors. Bomberg showed the jury surveillance video from Hernandez’s home. In it, he is seen arriving with a gun hours before going to pick up Lloyd in Boston. Later it shows Hernandez and his friends, Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace, carrying items from the basement to the trunk of a rental car. “The cameras in the basement that night weren’t recording,” Bomberg said. The cameras also showed Hernandez standing in his living room with a pistol hours after Lloyd’s death. The pistol is similar to the one used to kill Lloyd. Lloyd was also seen in the home, in another room. Hernandez appeared wide eyed and fidgety after that video was shown in the court. Bomberg wrapped up his remarks after 45 minutes, at which point defense attorney Kevin Reddington arose to tell the jurors prosecutors

Hernandez’s fiancé, Shayanna Jenkins, who’s also facing a charge of perjury in connection to the case, was in court along with members of Hernandez’s family. Lloyd’s family was also in attendance.

targeted Hernandez because of his celebrity status. “Aaron Hernandez is an innocent man…[He] is not guilty,” said Reddington who characterized the official investigation as “sloppy and unprofessional.” Hernandez had a $41 million contract with the Patriots at the time of Lloyd’s murder. Dorchester woman’s body found in fatal house fire Dorchester. Officials estimate the fire also caused roughly $250,000 worth of damage. Fire officials confirmed a twoalarm inferno killed a woman in Dorchester this morning. The fire swept through a two-story residential building at 31 Greenwich St. The death marks the first fatal fire of 2015 in the city; there were four fatal fires in Boston

last year. The victim’s name has yet to be released. She was described by fire officials as “an older woman.” Firefighters responded to the scene, a white house with green trim, shortly after 6 a.m. By 8 a.m., windows of the structure were blown out and the exterior toward the back of the building was ripped open, exposing a charred interior. The Boston Fire Department estimates the blaze caused about $250,000 worth of damage. That department

It was not immediately clear if that person was the victim; calls to Boston Fire were not immediately returned. Two charged in double shooting

Dana-FarberCareers.com

Two Boston teens were arraigned in connection with a double shooting at a Jamaica Plain T stop earlier this week. Reginald Price, 18, of Jamaica Plain and Nicholas Bootman, 18, of Dorchester, allegedly opened fire at the Forest Hills MBTA station just after 2 p.m. Monday. Price reportedly shot a 24-year-old woman in the head and a 62-year-old woman in the back. The 62-year-old is described as having life-threatening injuries. They are not believed to be the targets of the shooting. Prosecutors says surveil-

lance cameras show the two men enter the station and talk with three other males. Soon thereafter, Price is seen on surveillance footage turning with a gun in his hand and shooting at the males. He missed all three, prosecutors said. Price then fled the station, alongside Bootman, in the direction of South Street. Transit police collected witness statements, surveillance imagery and ballistic evidence at the station, according to prosecutors. Both Bootman and Price were arraigned in West Roxbury Municipal Court on charges of assault and battery. METRO

Smoke prompts riders to kick out Red Line windows A mechanical problem that caused smoke at the Red Line T platform at Quincy Center Thursday morning, prompted riders to kick out subway car windows so people could flee the train. There were no injuries reported, MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said. The Red Line was plagued with significant delays during Thursday’s morning rush hour. Pesaturo said the matter was “nothing more than a mechanical issue on the

train.” According to Pesaturo, there was no fire and no smoke inside of the subway cars. “While a thorough investigation is still underway, it is known that a failure in the train’s motor and/or propulsion systems resulted in a burst of smoke on the train’s exterior. This was not an emergency situation.” He added, “The MBTA was about to open the doors when some people on the outside of the train decided to kick the windows. There was no reason for this to happen. It’s unclear why some acted in such a manner.” METRO

Arizona battles measles outbreak before Super Bowl State’s Department of Health Services. The outbreak is the first in Arizona since 2008. Health officials in three Arizona counties said hundreds of people may have been exposed to the highly contagious measles virus, three days before thousands of sports fans pour into the state for the Super Bowl. The National Football League championship game will be held in Maricopa County at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale on Feb. 1. Officials there, and in Pinal and Gila counties, are looking for people who have been to hospitals, grocery stores and a post office where infected residents visited. Arizona has reported eight cases so far, two in Maricopa County. Measles is one of

the most contagious diseases known to man, with each original patient able to infect many others if they aren’t vaccinated. Maricopa health workers are trying to track down 195 people, mostly children, Jeanene Fowler, a spokeswoman for the county health department said in an e-mail Thursday. The virus can linger in the air or on surfaces for hours, and health officials are trying to track down those exposed. Maricopa’s county health department said that people who

officials have identified 79 cases of the disease, which started in Anaheim’s Disneyland amusement park. Cases linked to the outbreak have also been found in Utah, Washington, Colorado, Oregon, Michigan and Nebraska, according to the California Department of Public Health. REUTERS

In all of American lore, few fables have survived so stoutly as that of little George Washington whacking a cherry tree, then bravely admitting it: “I cannot tell a lie.” Which is interesting, because the ghost of George Washington came to visit me last night to talk about the Super Bowl. “So what’s going on with this big game? Football, is it? Did I hear correctly that there are billions of dollars at stake, and people watching around the world?” “That’s right,” I said, sitting up and rubbing my eyes. “And Katy Perry is doing half time. She’s a singer.” “Ah, no doubt she’ll let fly with a good hornpipe like we enjoyed in Gadsby’s tavern!” “Maybe. Why are you here?” “I’ve come to talk about integrity,” he said. “Word reached me in the afterlife that there is some question of malfeasance.” “Mmm, yeah. The team from Boston has been accused of deflating the balls, and Seattle’s defenders grab like teenagers on a date.” “So the game is to figure out who can break the rules best without getting caught? I thought that was what Con-

gress was for.” We chatted for a while about how concepts like “character” and “values” have become, in too many circles, relics of bygone days. And how wealth and winning, no matter how they are achieved, have been elevated to the status of de facto virtues ... in sports, business, politics and more. “Still,” I asked, “do you really think we’ve changed that much?” “Seems like it,” Washington said. “I mean, we had cheaters in my day too, and you can argue the whole system was rigged to help wealthy planters and slave owners. But I think people were a little more ashamed and contrite when they got caught.” “Perhaps. Look, l’m kind of tired,” I said. “You can come back for the game if you want. We’ll have nachos.” “Thanks, I’ll pass. I’m binge watching The Good Wife on my DVR. But for the record, I’ll pick the Patriots to win.” “Honestly?” “Ha!” he said. “Good one.”

Snow happy Winter blues. Snowstorm Juno was your chance to break the cycle – did you miss it? The grind of winter can wear even the most cheerful person down. The cold has us reaching for comfort foods that actually leave us feeling worse, and it seems like whatever time of day we step outside, it’s dark and feels too late to do anything. “We look at winter in a way that is different than the other seasons,” says Dr. Freida Birnbaum, a New Jersey-based psychologist. “We tend to go into ourselves, we tend to eat foods that really do affect our moods — carbs — and socializing less as well. None of these have to happen.” The dip in the body’s level of the feel-good hormone se-

rotonin happens as naturally and inevitably as fall. But that doesn’t mean your mood has to follow. “The problem here is people feel they have to have some kind of fix, medication, therapy — not the case,” says Birnbaum. Given all that, it may have been hard to see that Snowstorm Juno’s mildness was a great chance to jolt yourself out of your winter rut. Here’s Think yourself warm

Get over the cold Try this trick: Before going outside, close your eyes and imagine yourself on a beach in Florida. “If you think of yourself being in a warmer climate, that helps to warm you up,” says Birnbaum. “What seems to be the wrong thing to do (going out) really feels much better in the long run.”

how not to let the cold or another excuse keep you from enjoying your next not-sosnowy snow day.

Do a gut check Would you have stayed inside if you’d gotten an unexpected day off in, say, May? Probably not, so why not do what you would’ve done then? “It’s a wonderful chance to really trust your judgement and know that what doesn’t work is giving yourself a message that to be inside, to isolate yourself is good for you,” says Birnbaum.

CULTURE Funny guy

His greatest role Let’s make a bold claim: Costner may think he’s a serious thespian and artist, one who glowered up a storm in “Dances with Wolves.” But drama isn’t his real thing. It’s comedy. His finest turn, the one for the history books, is, in our opinion, “Bull Durham.” Apart from being the greatest sports movie ever made — which is to say one that’s not really about sports — it allows him to be funny, charming and kind of a jerk, all at once. Best of all? In an early monologue he gets to be right about the assassination of John F. Kennedy: “I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.” Take that, Oliver Stone. — MATT PRIGGE

But the film doesn’t pick sides. “I just thought it was an honest story from the very first page. I felt like I was reading something really authentic,” he says. Costner was so drawn to the script, written by his old “The Upside of Anger” filmmaker, Mike Binder, that he wound up paying for it. When no one else came round, he put up his own money — $9 million of it. “I was hoping other people would rush to the movie and see the same potential and value in it that I did, but unfortunately that didn’t happen,” he says. Not that his character is some white savior, or even that good. Elliot’s battles with Rowena betray his own prejudices. He thinks Eloise is already “living in one of the safest neighborhoods in L.A.,” he boasts, and shouldn’t move to the Rowena’s part of the city. “Elliot was comfortable in that environment, visiting and socializing with Eloise’s family, but he instinctually still thought his granddaughter would be safer with him,”

says Costner. Still, the movie subtly condemns his stance. “Racism doesn’t have to be overt. This is where the veil of racism is lifted, when he thinks she wouldn’t be safe in that ‘other’ neighborhood.” “But Elliot travels far in this movie and comes to understand himself better,” he adds. It was a bit of a parallel for Costner, who adds that examining those covert attitudes in a narrative made him feel “more empowered.” “People say they’re color-blind when they want to explain they are without prejudice. But to say you’re color-blind is disingenuous. You do see differences. The key is to understand those differences.” The tale may not have been epic enough for big Hollywood studios to take notice, but Costner hopes that audiences will at least be surprised by the film and the things it says. “It’s a simple story about life,” he says. “It doesn’t solve anything. It’s about the wellbeing of a child and what’s best for the child and race shouldn’t be rolled into those sorts of things.” LIZ BROWN

Minis. Improve your Oscar pool chances by seeing the nominated live-action and animated short films Live-action: Traditionally, this section has been the Academy’s worst. The live-action committee seems to like a particular type of short: an overly earnest, sad, banal mini-film that usually ends with a cheap twist. Only two here end with cheap rug-pulling: “Aya,” in which an Israeli woman (Sarah Adler) whimsically pretends to be the driver of a Danish music researcher (Ulrich Thomsen); and “Boogaloo and Graham,” a boisterous look at two kids living with the Troubles in Belfast. Of the other three, “Parvaneh” offers fun yet predictable night-on-the-town antics between a young Afghan immigrant in a Swiss city and a same-aged rebel, while “The Phone Call” is a grossly rib-nudging weepie about a suicide hotline center saved by the peerless professionalism of its two actors: Sally Hawkins and, heard but not seen, Jim Broadbent. It offers people-watching along with cryptic social commentary — a combo too singular for even the Oscars to ignore. The Canadian “Me and My Moulton” uses animation to explore memories. / ME AND MY MOULTON

Animation: Traditionally, this category tends to be more reliable than live action, as animation tends to be more visually striking than boring old reality. But this is a relatively off year, which is to say it’s only sometimes wonderful. There are some eye-catching textures: characters tend to become part of their surroundings in “The Bigger Picture” (concerning an elderly mother’s death) and “The Dam Keeper” (about a sad pig) is all smudgy colors. But

both feel distractingly incomplete as narratives, as though more care went into the look than the content. Even the bright spots never shine too bright. A two-minute quickie, “A Single Life,” expertly milks a gimmick, then gets out of there. Disney’s “Feast,” shown in front of “Big Hero 6,” cleverly portrays a break-up from the perspective of the dumpee’s eternally ravenous mutt – though, this being Disney, of course it has a happy

ending. The closest to a standout is the Canadian “Me and My Moulton,” a remembrance piece that uses animation to track the way memories work. If only more memoirists thought to use the medium — a more engaging form, in ways, than ye olde printed word. What will win (probably): “The Dam Keeper” is just sappy enough to steal the trophy from the more entertaining/ accomplished “Feast.”

Eleanor Guthrie ended the first season of Starz’s pirate drama, “Black Sails,” in a bit of a bad situation. The unpredictable Captain Vane (Zach McGowan) had taken over the fort in Nassau, and her ally, Captain Flint (Toby Stephens), was away at sea in search of a possibly fictional treasure. But don’t expect life to get much easier on her, says the actress who plays Eleanor, Hannah New. “You find her at rock bottom at the beginning of this season,” she says. “You can’t really imagine that things can get much worse. Everything’s falling apart for her. By the end of this season, you realize that rock bottom is even deeper than you could ever have imagined.” New says that Season 2 takes a global look at piracy, from policy in Europe to what it means when the show’s pirates succeed at their schemes. “You realize this isn’t just about gold and money, it’s about political alliances,” says New. Eleanor will also face danger in the form of Captain Vane. “She’s playing a very dangerous game with Vane, thinking that

One of Eleanor’s sources of conflict in the first season was the ebb and flow of her relationship with Max (Jessica Parker Kennedy), but the duo won’t be on particularly good terms this season. “Max becomes very intricately linked with Eleanor, but she becomes an archnemesis,” says New. “That was her closest relationship. That was the place where she could be the most vulnerable and most open,” New goes on. “Once that was severed, she realized how much she gave away in that relationship and maybe she underestimated Max’s ability to use that information. That’s going to be the biggest shock for Eleanor.”

Bieber wants you to know he has a lot of feelings

A recent visit to “Ellen” apparently prompted Justin Bieber to take to Facebook to record a dimly lit confessional video detailing his personal insecurities about how he’s come off over the past year. And he’s just trying to be Justin, guys. “It’s been a minute since I’ve been in a public appearance, and I didn’t want to come off arrogant or conceited — basically how I’ve been acting the past year, year-and-a-half,” he says of his interview with Ellen

DeGeneres. “I’m not what I was pretending to be. Why I say I was pretending is often we pretend to be something we’re not as a cover up of what we’re truly feeling inside. And there was a lot of feelings going on in there. … Just being young and growing up in this business is hard. Just growing up in general is hard.” If this is how he reacts to a sit-down with DeGeneres, maybe this whole Comedy Central roast thing isn’t such a great idea.

It can be tough being the third Middleton When you think of the name Middleton, you think Kate, right? Beyond that, probably Pippa. But don’t forget about James. Can being the younger brother to the Duchess of Cambridge be a bit frustrating? “Yes, it does get frustrating,” James Middleton tells iPad magazine, The Young Director. “I work incredibly hard — just like every other person in business and work. And aside from the fact of — yes, I am the brother of someone very important — I am, at the end of the day, just James.” So have some sympathy, you guys.

ago. [Laughs] No, I think I do. The first dish I created there was probably — I think it was a bone marrow custard cooked inside the bone with a ragout of corn, mushrooms and black truffles.

Chef Ken Oringer has been part of the Boston food scene for a long time. He first opened Back Bay’s Clio in the Eliot Hotel 17 years ago, and since then has expanded to other restaurants, including the dual branches of Toro in Boston and New York, which he opened with Jamie Bissonnette. He’s also appeared on this year’s Boston-based season of “Top Chef.” He kindly took a break from managing his multiple restaurants to talk about Boston’s changing food scene, tasting menus and how hard it is to remember the ’90s.

What was the signature dish that helped Clio succeed? I think what helped the restaurant get going was the tasting menus. We offered different tasting menus back then, like a 14-course tasting menu and a 10-course tasting menu. Seventeen years ago, I don’t think many people offered big tasting menus like that back then. That was before 9/11 when there was a lot of money. People were throwing out money hand over fist. It was so easy to get people to spend a fortune

Do you remember the first dish you created for Clio? That was 17 years ago! I don’t remember s— from 17 years

Why do people like tasting menus? I think they like being able to sit down and be surprised. They leave the spontaneous creativity to the chef and enjoy the roller coaster ride.

How have you seen the restaurant scene change over the years? When Clio opened, there was probably a fraction of the amount of restaurants that there are now. Now we’re as good a dining city as I would say anywhere in the world. We’re a small city, but the chefs are super talented and driven, and we have so many different neighborhoods and so many funky restaurants.

The Clio menu mentions that it’s very seasonally inspired. What do you like adding for the winter months? I like to focus on certain flavor points before proteins. During winter, I love using things like salsify and sunchokes and beets. I always like using things like maple and pomegranate. I just like to play off earthy and sweet and sour and spicy and

Where’s your favorite place to eat out in the city? I tend to drag myself to Blue Dragon quite often. I really love it. It’s a lot of notes I love. It’s a fun place to drink, it’s a fun place to hang out, the food is great, it’s cheap. Sarma, I really love a lot also. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

Re: ‘From farm to beauty cabinet’ (Metro, Jan. 29) Sheesh. First of all, ingredients used in everything from CocaCola to gummy bears are used in the car industry and people have been ingesting them for years upon years and live to tell the tale. Secondly, I’m sorry that your step-father has cancer

I’d like to think once you reach your mid 20s to early 30s that you know who you are, that you’re content with yourself and the character of your person. To piss and moan and spend all this time that could be used on something meaningful on worrying about your wrinkles and wanting to “plump your fat cells” is honestly pathetic.

Had this happened to the Seahawks, the conspiracy theorists and anti-Patriots brigade would be out in full force. The fire alarm at the Patriots’ team hotel, the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, Arizona, went off for the second time this week early in the morning on Thursday. The Patriots maintained that the early wakeup calls weren’t a distraction. “I haven’t heart it,” Patriots quarterback Tom Brady told ESPN. “Must be sleeping through it, so that’s good. I slept great.”

Visit Metro.us to see how Darrelle Revis has transformed the Patriots defense.

Super Bowl XLIX. It’s a clash of former champions in the desert as the Patriots square off against the defending champion Seahawks.

The Patriots and Seahawks share a remarkably similar history heading into their Super Bowl showdown in Glendale, Arizona this Sunday (6:30 p.m., NBC). Both teams are coached by men who didn’t succeed in the NFL on their first head coaching try, as Pete Carroll failed with the Jets and Patriots, and Bill Belichick failed with the Browns. Both teams are led by quarterbacks who have been doubted and doubted again, as Russell Wilson was thought of as too short to succeed in the NFL and Tom Brady was thought

of as an NFL backup at best upon entering the league 15 years ago. Both teams have a bad boy image, as the Seahawks have had multiple PED issues under Carroll’s watch and Belichick has had multiple “-Gates” occur under his guidance. But more than anything else, once you cut through all the off-field drama, the Seahawks and Patriots are both champions. Seattle is looking for its second title in a row. New England is looking for its fourth in the Brady/Belichick era. Controversies aside, Sunday’s football game should be special. The undisputed best two teams in the NFL in the 2014 season will be locking horns for the right to hoist the Lombardi Trophy one more time. MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos matthew.burke@metro.us

each night’s victory. Look at the Pats’ last Super Bowl win (10 years ago over the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX). Deion Branch, not Brady, was the game’s MVP. Getting back to more recent events, running back LaGarrette Blount was the clear standout for the Pats in the AFC Championship Game and slot receiver Danny Amendola broke out of his season-long slump in the Divisional round against Baltimore, catching five balls for 81 yards while scoring two touchdowns. The Pats, however, may be due for a defensive hero to step up in the Super Bowl. In New England’s first Super Bowl victory in the 2001 season, it was cornerback Ty Law who picked off Kurt Warner and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown. If you’re a fan of football lineage there’s this: Current Pats cornerback Darrelle Revis is, like Law, from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. And not coincidentally, they both wear No. 24.

Beast in the Bowl Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch followed up Tuesday’s “I’m here so I don’t get fined” speech with the simpler “You know why I’m here” response when questioned by the media on Wednesday. It’s possible that Lynch knows something we don’t. Lynch could very well be in Arizona to win the Super Bowl MVP award, a prize that surprisingly hasn’t been won by a running back since 1998, when Denver’s Terrell Davis was the best player on football’s grandest

Super Bowl predictions Metro picks the winners for Super Bowl XLIX: •

Matt Burke: Pats 24, Seahawks 20 — For the first time, the Patriots have a healthy Rob Gronkowski in the Super Bowl. He continues to dominate.

Evan Macy: Seahawks 20, Pats 14 — The Seattle run defense will make the Pats one-dimensional and the Seahawks’ secondary will do the rest.

Kristian Dyer: Pats 23, Seahawks 19 — The Patriots have one of the best redzone defenses in the NFL. They should be able to hold the Seahawks to field goals.

stage. Lynch would certainly have been named NFC Championship Game MVP if there was such a thing as he ripped off 157 yards on 25 carries and found the end zone once in Seattle’s unreal, 28-22 OT win over Green Bay a couple weeks back. Meanwhile, the Patriots have given up big yardage on the ground this season in certain games. The Chiefs ran wild on New England in that famed Week 4 Monday night Kansas City blowout win, and Baltimore’s Justin Forsett dashed for 129 yards on 24 carries in the Pats’ narrow 35-31 win over the Ravens in the Divisional round.

Russell Wilson already owns a tag for being a clutch performer, given his run to a Super Bowl title last year and how he’s gotten Seattle back to the big game this season. But Wilson has been downright bad in several of the playoff games he’s played in in his young career. Wilson completed just nine passes and had a passer rating of just 67.6 against the Saints in a Divisional round win last year. Ugly Russell showed up again in this year’s postseason as he finished the NFC title game having completed just 14-of-29 for 209 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. His passer rating was a brutal 44.3. The Pats defense picked off Andrew Luck twice in the AFC title game

and forced him to have a 23.0 passer rating. Joe Flacco played great in the Divisional round against New England, but Devin McCourty and Duron Harmon each intercepted the Baltimore signal caller. New England is more than capable of flustering Wilson this Sunday.

An Annual Dental Exam: Important for More than Finding Cavities or Gum Disease

Want the Best for Your Teeth & Smile?

By Dr. Michael Kahn A comprehensive annual dental examination is very important for your overall health as well as your dental health. An unhealthy mouth may contribute to your susceptibility to other diseases, especially if it affects your immune system’s ability to fight off disease.

A Full-Service Faculty Practice Offering Leading-Edge Dental Care

Most people think a regular checkup examination at the dentist is important for getting your teeth cleaned as well as checking for cavities and, possibly, early discovery of periodontal (gum) disease. It is important to accomplish those things but, in addition, other infections, benign tumors, or even cancerous growths or their precursors can be detected earlier or before they become serious. During a comprehensive examination, a dentist not only looks at your teeth and gums, but also at the rest of your mouth’s tissues to make sure other disease, both relatively harmless and potentially very serious, is not present. Dentists are trained to detect disease at its earliest stages, when it can most easily be treated. Also, besides your mouth, a well-trained dentist examines the throat area behind your mouth for abnormal growths and the skin of your face and neck for suspicious growths and abnormal lymph nodes. Recently, in addition, to the most well known risk factors for mouth cancer, namely smoking and alcohol abuse, a new risk factor, human papillomavirus (HPV), has become increasingly common for causing throat cancer. This type of cancer especially affects men and arises approximately 5-10 years earlier (age 40-50) than mouth and throat cancer in men and women due to smoking and alcohol. HPV-associated throat cancer is thought to be acquired by HPV transmitted from the genital region and often is asymptomatic (i.e., although it exists, it fails to show the noticeable symptoms and signs with which it is usually associated). --That’s why it’s important for you to have a well-trained dentist conduct a comprehensive head and neck soft tissue examination at least once a year.

Patriots linebackers an underrated group Super Bowl XLIX. The Pats quickly recovered after losing Jerod Mayo to injury. For most teams, losing a Pro Bowl middle linebacker early in the regular season is enough adversity to send a defense into a tailspin. For the second straight season, Patriots captain Jerod Mayo (37 tackles, 16 assists, one sack) went down with a season-ending injury well before the playoffs had begun. The valuable experience from having dealt with his absence so recently coupled with the fact that they had a pair of emerging talents in Jamie Collins (74 solo tackles, 42 assists, four sacks, four fumble recoveries, two interceptions) and Dont’a Hightower (51 solo tack-

les, 38 assists, six sacks, one fumble recovery) is one of the underrated reasons why New England has reached Super Bowl XLIX vs. Seattle on Sunday (6:30 p.m., NBC) in Glendale, Arizona. Collins is only in his second pro season, while Hightower is in his third, but perhaps more than anyone else on the team (regardless of position), those two have made the biggest leaps from last season until now. We had seen glimpses of Collins’ incredible potential, like in his dominating performance vs. the Colts in last year’s divisional round victory. Hightower wasn’t quite a bust coming out of the University of Alabama football factory, but let’s just say his first two seasons were disappointing in that he always seemed a step slow and he rarely made plays. The unexpected addition to

the linebacker corps, Akeem Ayers (16 tackles, four assists, four sacks, one interception), who was picked up midseason in a trade with the Titans, has flourished since Day 1. Coming back from an injury of his own, he lost playing time in Tennessee to the point where he barely saw the field anymore, thus making him expendable for the measly sum of an undisclosed draft pick. The Patriots still employ a 4-3 base defense (four defensive linemen, three linebackers) in most situations, but defensive coordinator Matt Patricia

also deserves praise for letting his guys be more aggressive — hence the increase in sacks from the linebackers. Of course, it also helps to have a great secondary, but that’s another story. This linebackers group will be key against the Seahawks as Marshawn Lynch is Seattle’s biggest weapon on offense (with apologies to Russell Wilson). If he has a big game like the one in the NFC Championship vs. Green Bay (157 yards rushing, one TD; one catch, 26 yards), it’s hard to see New England coming out on top. Conversely, if they can contain Lynch then they have a great chance to win their first Super Bowl title in 10 years. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

Top 10 Super Bowls of all time NFL. How will Sunday’s Super Bowl measure up to the best in the game’s 49-year history? Finally, it is upon us. Around 6:30 P.M. Sunday night, Super Bowl XLIX will kick off and the largest television audience in North America in 2015 will watch. Some for the game, some for the commercials, some for the halftime show. What they will see is the culmination of two weeks of breathless — and, honestly, remarkably stupid — discussion of Deflate-gate contested in Glendale, Arizona. And what a show it projects to be. Both the AFC’s New England Patriots and NFC’s Seattle Seahawks are loaded with star power, from Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick on down. DENIS GORMAN @DenisGorman sports@metro.us

Super Bowl III

This was the game that made the Super Bowl into THE GAME. The AFL champion Jets were 18-point underdogs to the NFL champion Colts. And with good reason. The

Colts were 13-1-0 and had scored 402 points while limiting opponents to 10 points per game. But the Jets racked up 337 yards on 74 plays while picking off Colts quarterbacks Earl Morrall and Johnny Unitas four times.

Super Bowl XXIII

Among the best-played Super Bowls, it is remembered for Joe Montana connecting with John Taylor on a 10yard touchdown pass with 34 ticks left.

Widely labeled the most patriotic Super Bowl due to the game coinciding with the first Gulf War, the ground-and-pound Giants kept the ball away from the run-and-shoot Bills, totaling 386 yards on 73 plays. Still Buffalo had a shot to win the game but Scott Norwood’s 47-yard field goal went wide right.

A heavyweight title fight in which the Broncos and Packers traded scores throughout, the reigning, defending champion Packers’ reign ended when Broncos linebacker John Mobley swatted down Brett Favre’s pass attempt to Mark Chmura. Terrell Davis’ three touchdown runs set a Super Bowl record.

The game is not only remembered for David Tyree’s helmet catch and a Giants defense that sacked Patriots quarterback Tom Brady five times, but also as a moment in NFL history where perfection was ruined. Patriots fans are still hurting from the phrase “18-1.

An Open Letter to Punxsutawney Phil Dear Phil, Big day coming up. Lots of people are counting on you. We just want to say, no pressure. You might see your shadow, and we know that’s terrifying. Actually, there are shadows everywhere. So don’t overthink it. Just get up there, see a shadow, and run for your life. Why? Because we don’t want spring to come early — six more weeks of winter is the way to go. We know what spring really is: a monster in a pretty disguise. Spring makes you want to claw your own eyes out. Endless sneezing has strangers blessing you. Strangers. And even the nice soft things, like tissues, make you raw and red. It’s a cruel tease of a season. And a few little flowers don’t make up for it. Spring must be stopped, Phil. You know what you need to do.
