Southie St. Patrick’s Day Parade at a crossroads Parade. Local opinions are mixed about how the parade should be handled with all this snow on the ground. He drove the snakes out Ireland, but it will take more than St. Paddy’s silver tongue to drive the snow out of Southie, at least in time for the parade named in his honor. With the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade less than two weeks away, parade organizers are reaching out to the community to clear the parade route of the snow before the hundreds of thousands of revelers show up on March 15. Tim Duross, a parade organizer, said the council has already talked to labor unions and contractors about possibly removing snow. He said there were no plans to cancel or postpone the parade and indicated the council wasn’t interested in any major rerouting. “We might tweak it a little,” he said of the 3.2-mile route. “There are some little, tight turns we’ll try to eliminate.” Duross said the council won’t postpone the parade because “you lose all the big names; we have people coming from all over the world here.” Eddie Quinlan, a retiree and Southie native, said he would be in favor of postponing the festivities. “What’s another month?” he asked. “ I can’t even park in
front of my house. My truck’s in Abington right now.” Kim Lynch, a Southie native and bartender at the Clock Tavern on West Broadway, was incredulous to the idea that the city couldn’t clear the sidewalks in time for the parade. “What are we paying taxes for?” she asked. “They made it work for the Patriots parade. Why not our parade?” Lynch thought the parade should be kept off the side streets, where the snow and ice is more treacherous. While Lynch cast doubt on whether locals would be interested in shoveling out the route, Mike Shaw, the owner of Loco, a bar on the corner of West Broadway and F Street, said he planned to pitch in. “Of course I’ll do that,” he said. “Everybody wants to have the best parade we can and we’ll do what we have to do to make that possible.” Hanadi Hamzeh, a Southie resident and owner of Covet, a women’s consignment shop on West Broadway, thought organizers should move the parade into town, on Boylston Street or postpone it. “I know we have traditions,” she said. “But we also have tons of snow. That’s the reality.” Locals like Lynch, however, can’t imagine moving the parade to another part of the city. “It’s our parade,” she said. “A week or two would have been nice, but we’re tough, we’re from New England, we can deal with this.”

Penalties. Walsh wants steeper snow fines for property owners
Dig out your sidewalk or pay the price. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
You thought the Big Dig was expensive? Try the “Snow Dig.” Boston Mayor Marty Walsh wants to quintuple the fine property owners pay for not shoveling snow from their sidewalks to $1,500. That’s five times — yep, five times — the current $300 fine. Walsh has fielded a home rule petition, which needs approval of the city council, state legislature and gover-
nor, to raise the cap on snow infractions. His petition would also add the balance of those fines to property tax bills if they go unpaid. Boston has been buried under nearly 8 feet of snow within the last month. The city’s current regulations require property owners to remove snow from sidewalks and curb ramps abutting their properties within three hours of the snowfall ending
or three hours from sunrise if the snow is overnight. They’re supposed to clear a path 42 inches wide. Not so easy when there’s 8 feet of snow on either side of you. Walsh has also been imploring locals to not dump their snow in the streets this winter. “Illegally dumping snow onto public roads severely worsens an already challeng-
ing snow-removal process,” Walsh said in a statement. “It’s a problem for every pedestrian, but it is especially difficult for our children, for the disabled and for the elderly to face deep, unshoveled sidewalks, and be forced to walk in the road,” said Walsh through a statement. He said the larger fines would help the city recoup some costs involved in snow clearing. METRO

Dorchester. Woman faces charges for fatal stabbing A Dorchester woman was arraigned Tuesday in connection with a fatal 2014 stabbing. Authorities allege Takisa Matthews, 30, stabbed Maria Sanchez, 26, of Mattapan early in the morning of Oct. 18, 2014, at a Washington Street party. Prosecutors say a dispute between two groups at the party escalated, spilling outside, at which time Matthews stabbed and seriously wounded a relative of Sanchez. She then walked over to Sanchez, who was fighting
another woman, and stabbed her several times in the back. Sanchez was transported to Boston Medical Center, and later pronounced dead. Matthews now faces charges of murder and armed assault. She was arraigned Tuesday and held without bail. She is scheduled to return to court March 31. The department’s homicide unit continues to actively investigate the facts and circumstances of the incident and anyone with any information is asked to call 617-343-4470. METRO

An all-white jury that includes a restaurant manager, several retirees and a social worker will hear the trial of accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, which gets underway with opening statements on Wednesday. The two-month-long jury selection process wrapped up on Tuesday when lawyers for both sides winnowed the pool to 10 women and eight men. They will form the panel of 12 jurors and six alternates who will hear a trial that may run into June. Tsarnaev, 21, is charged with killing three people and injuring 264 with a pair of homemade bombs at the race’s crowded finish line on April 15, 2013, and with fatally shooting
Jury selection process The jury selection process began in early January when more than 1,350 potential jurors filled out questionnaires on their ties to the attack and their views on the death penalty. •

The FAA recently proposed new regulations that would lift the current ban on most commercial drone ights, but the ďŹ nal rulemaking could take anywhere from nine months to three years to ďŹ nalize the hearing.

China hopes environment chief will be breath of fresh air
Ex-CIA chief Petraeus to plead guilty in aairrelated case
One year after “declaring war on pollution, China has appointed an inexperienced outsider as its new environment minister tasked with breathing life into a massive cleanup campaign that even optimists say will take decades to complete. Beijing has vowed to reverse the damage done to its skies, rivers and soil during China’s three-decade dash for growth, putting its underresourced environment ministry under pressure to deliver results. Leading that drive will be Chen Jining, 51, an environmental scientist and president of China’s prestigious Tsinghua University, who was appointed the country’s Minister of Environmental Protection on Friday. Former CIA Director David Petraeus has agreed to plead guilty to a single charge relating to mishandling classiďŹ ed information in a case arising from the ex-Army general’s extramarital aair with a female Army Reserve oďŹƒcer, the Justice Department said on Tuesday. Documents disclosing Petraeus’s guilty plea were ďŹ led in federal court in Charlotte, North Carolina. The retired four-star general agreed to plead guilty to a charge of unauthorized removal and retention of classiďŹ ed material. A law enforcement source said Petraeus is pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge and is unlikely to be sentenced to serve prison time.

Sarah Silverman oversharing about boyfriend’s privates OK, so some men apparently give their, ahem, members nicknames. That’s a thing. I guess. But hey, I’m all for new opportunities for creativity. And you’d have to get pretty creative to top the name “Masters of Sex” star Michael Sheen gave his, at least if girlfriend Sarah Silverman is to be believed. Completely unprompted, Silverman took to Twitter to announce, “My boyfriend named his penis. He named it ‘The Great Christine Baranski,’” which sounds like a mouthful, honestly.
Tensions are reportedly running high behind the scenes at “The Voice,” no matter how chipper the chair-spinners look on the air. In particular, Adam Levine is apparently feuding with fellow judge Pharrell Williams, as Levine is “feeling shafted by Pharrell behind the scenes,” a source tells Radar Online. “Not only is Pharrell taking the contestants that Adam would have generally locked in with ease, but he is also a favorite among the production staff.” Ouch. Nobody wants to feel like the production staff’s passing them over for the newer, more be-hatted model. According to the source, that staff may have good grounds for not favoring Levine: “Adam is just jaded after doing it for so many seasons,” the source adds. “Production staff are saying that not only does Adam act like an a-—hole, but he is totally jealous of Pharrell, and this season has brought out his true colors.”

Everything ‘Star Wars’ is awesome The recently concluded first season of Disney XD’s “Star Wars Rebels” was apparently just the beginning of the network’s plans to bring the galaxy far, far away to the small screen. And their next trick sounds, dare I say, awesome. According to the Hollywood Reporter, we can soon look forward to “Star Wars: Droid Tales,” which will feature C3PO and R2D2 just after “Return of the Jedi,” rehashing the first six films in the franchise over the course of five episodes set to air later this year. Oh, and the whole thing is done with Legos, like “The Lego Movie.” It’s sort of a Cliff’s Notes for the whole saga so far, told with Legos. Awesome.

A portrait of the actor as an exhausted father.
New dad Ryan Reynolds has some theories as to why he’s so sleep-deprived lately. Or maybe he’s just trying to put a positive spin on life with a newborn. “Our baby in particular is, we think, allergic to sleep,” he tells Jimmy Fallon during an interview. “We think that she thinks she’s protecting us from the sleep monsters. Like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to keep them up or the sleep monsters will get them.’” Which, as adorable as that sounds, is asking for an awful lot of advanced, creative thinking for a nine-week-old.

Interview. The former “Dawson’s Creek” star joins the crimefighting franchise to chase down some online baddies. Though James Van Der Beek has been trying out sitcoms recently, with “Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23” and “Friends with Better Lives,” his latest project takes a more serious turn. He’s playing an FBI agent on “CSI: Cyber,” alongside Oscar-winner Patricia Arquette. The show follows a cybercrime squad assisted by a cyber-psychologist (Arquette). Van Der Beek tells us why you should follow him into the shadier corners of the online world. Because he’s trying something new: I love to shake it up. I can’t do just one thing for too long. I had a great time doing comedy. I did it for three years. I had two shows picked up, and when I got this offer, I thought, “Maybe it is time to come full circle and come back to my dramatic roots.” Because come on, it’s more ‘CSI’: Three letters motivated me: “CSI.” It’s one of the biggest television franchises in the world, so to play a lead on something like that is a huge honor. I don’t know what possessed CBS after my comedy work to think, “Hey, we need somebody to kick some ass in the show, why don’t we offer

it to that guy?” But I’m really glad they did. Because it’s not just going to be cops with laptops: A show about four people staring at a screen for an hour is generally not the most engaging television. This is a blend of cybercrime-fighting technology and old-school techniques, because the computer stuff is really fascinating, but it all eventually manifests in the real world. Behind all the cybercrime is a real human being who lives in a real location and has a real door that may or may not need to be kicked down. Because it’s frighteningly big subject matter: I thought I was pretty savvy about cybercrime, but after speaking to the experts who were advising the show, I realized I was completely in the dark — both fortunately and unfortunately. The well of cybercrime is bottomless, which for a storyteller is great because you never run out of storylines, but for people it can be very scary. I hope this show does enlighten people as to just how much this kind of crime can happen to you and what steps you might want to do to just be careful and be aware and hopefully prevent it. Because he’s finally FBI age-
appropriate: I think, like, 10 years ago I wanted to play an FBI agent, but I just wasn’t old enough. I didn’t look old enough, certainly, and it was a blessing. And then just when I least expected it, I got offered the FBI agent. So I was very happy to take it. Because he’s gotten out of his own way: There’s a moment in my career where I was so … I guess I will say precious about what I would say “yes” to, and I passed on everything and really got out of relevance for a minute there. And so then I came to a point where I thought, “Well, screw that.” If something sounds fun and I haven’t done it before, I’m going to say “yes.” Because he did his research: The worst thing you could do is be spouting technical dialogue and have no attachment to it. That’s been the fun challenge of this job, to really wrap your mind around what it is you’re saying. I attended college for two years as an English major. Why would I ever get to learn battlefield forensics? But now I get to. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.us

Organize your life using the KonMari way Here are the best gems from Marie Kondo’s “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” ANDREA PARK Marie Kondo is the Beyonce of Japan — a larger-thanlife superstar. But unlike Beyonce, Kondo is a professional organizer. Her book, “The Life-Changing Magic of

Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing,” is making waves among Americans who want to learn how to live a neater and more Zen lifestyle.
We read the book and can vouch for its life-changing impact. Here are the lessons we learned from Kondo through her technique, which she calls the KonMari Method.
Put everything on the floor
Kondo likes to store everything upright. She says stacking wears out the bottom items, and it’s easier to see what you have when it’s stored upright instead of at the bottom of a pile. Kondo folds her clothes so they stand on edge and even stores her carrots vertically in the refrigerator.
Kondo says it’s easier to assess an item if you take it out of hibernation. You’ll be able to see it better, and it will be easier for you to pick up each item and touch it to see if it sparks joy.

We’ve all heard this one before, but the KonMari method is to ask yourself if it “sparks joy.” How can you tell? Don’t think about whether or not you “might need it later” or if someone gave it to you as a gift — pick it up, touch it and decide if you feel a visceral joy / TEN SPEED PRESS

for this item. If not, thank the item for serving its purpose to you (whether or not you actually used it or if it just gave you momentary joy when you purchased it) and toss it. Kondo is adamant that you must throw things away before you try to reorganize your home.

Tidy in order
Tidying isn’t emotionally easy, so Kondo recommends the following order: clothes, books, papers, random items and, lastly, mementos. The expert says we don’t have as much attachment to clothes, so this order will help build up resistance to being overly sentimental.
Do big purges Don’t chip away at your mess. To avoid relapsing into your slobbish ways, do your big discards at once. Why? Kondo
Kondo is against buying pricey storage containers, especially if they’re not square or rectangular. She suggests using shoeboxes instead because they are durable and the perfect size for storing small items. She even likes using the lids to store spices inside cabinets. Kondo’s timing couldn’t be better — spring cleaning is just around the corner. Get ready for a “joy” ride!

HOME
Not even snow can slow down demand for housing Spring trends. As always, Boston is trapped in a seller’s market. For those who didn’t hibernate, there’s no need to repeat what this historically snowy and bitter winter weather did in slowing down and almost stopping the city. But, oddly enough, what with moneyed foreign investors and eager people seeking a new home ready for spring, unlike the MBTA, the real estate scene didn’t stop dead in its tracks this winter. “Despite the record level of snowfall in Boston during the month of February, sales activity has been strong with some new listings receiving multiple offers in key neighborhoods,” says Brad Horner, who is Boston-based Raveis real estate group’s executive managing director. “The weather may have held a few new listings back, but the numbers are about the same today as a year ago with a few changes noted by neighborhood.” Those key neighborhoods, which continue to command high prices, are the classic ones: Boston’s Back Bay, South End, and Waterfront areas, along with Cambridge, which is seeing ever-increasing highs in sales prices for its old mansions. “In the luxury segment of the market,” Horner adds, “we are noticing an increase in Internet traffic, with many buyers shopping from their second homes in Florida and abroad.”
Lucky for some, but as demand for luxury condos rises, pricing in mid- and low-level housing rises, too. Horner predicts the spring market will be similar to last year; that is, favorable to sellers, not buyers. “Supply is not meeting demand and prices are continuing to rise.” The winter weather didn’t help with the lack of inventory and snow, ice and record cold impacted construction schedules for many new buildings, slowing new properties coming onto the market this year. That’s good news for current sellers. “Boston’s strong economy, changing demographics and the increasing desire to live close to work, public transportation, cultural offerings and social pursuits continue to drive the city’s real estate market,” Horner adds. Numbers of sales are down slightly right now, only because there is not enough inventory to satisfy demand.” All of this might sound like a nightmare for home buyers, but with mortgage interest rates still enticingly low, and rents not exactly alluring, buying remains a relatively stable financial investment. “With interest rates at historic lows and rental rates increasing, the rent versus buy scenario is still favorable for many thinking about making a home purchase,” Horner says. “And these fundamentals will continue to drive the demand.” LINDA CLARKE @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Block out some time for B-Method
Back pain. Your new prescription: high heels Fashion Week saw towering models look even more imposing by putting them on foot-size pedestals. But when it comes to high-heel shoes, they shouldn’t be confined to the catwalk. “My advice to any woman would be to stand up straight and wear high heels,” says spine surgeon Dr. Alfred O. Bonati. “I think that is probably the best exercise women can have.” Here’s why: Walking essentially on tiptoes strengthens your feet over time, and the elevation changes your gait because you’re forced to hold your knees and back straight, which takes the impact of walking off the spine. Flat shoes, meanwhile, may make you more uncomfortable in the long term. “When you walk with flat shoes, you go heel first, and that pressure goes directly from the heel to the back of the leg up to the back,” Bonati says. Bonati says tall women, who tend to wear flat shoes all the time, often complain of back pain. But shorter women (up to 5’6”) tend to wear high heels from an early age. “They develop a fantastic sexy walk, a bounce to their walk, because what they are doing is they are using the knee, reducing the impact on the back,” he explains. High heels also tend to lead to hip-swaying, which cuts down on stress for the pelvis and sacroiliac joint, a shockabsorbing segment of the spine just above the tailbone.

Inside the Workout. This seemingly mild class makes a lasting impression.
It may take some practice, but heels are worth it. / GETTY IMAGES
Bonati recommends a minimum 3-inch heel, “though 4-5 inches is the most effective.” And save up for brand-name shoes. “You cannot just have high shoes from a mediocre builder because what happens is the arch support is going to collapse, the pressure is going to be all on the heel and you’re going to develop a heel spur or damage the metatarsals,” he says. And yes, Bonati has a recommendation: Jimmy Choos. “It’s not only a beautiful shoe — it fits like a glove.” EVA KIS
Terri Walsh has been developing her Active Resistance Training method for 25 years, precisely because she knows you don’t have that kind of time. “When people come to a class, they don’t have time to dice things up into pieces anymore,” the trainer says. “That’s why it has to encompass flexibility, strength, endurance and cardio.” The B in B-Method, the name of her class at Crunch gym, stands for “block” — actually a pair of yoga blocks that she says is “how I trick people into the room.” They’re also the key to creating a workout with baked-in variable intensity. If you’re not flexible, the blocks essentially bring the floor up to meet you; for someone more advanced, they make pushups tougher through extending range of motion by putting the floor farther away. “Blocks can assist or become an agent of resistance,” Walsh explains.
TERRI WALSH PROVIDED
If you can’t make it to Crunch, you can follow one of Walsh’s lessons at www.youtube.com/user/exerciseworld. / PROVIDED
By propping yourself up on the blocks during planks, keeping it pressed tightly between your hands during lunges, squeezing them between your knees for sit-ups and more, you’re creating four active resistance points: feet, navel, ribs and shoulders. Being conscious of keeping these engaged is your goal
— not that you have to be reminded to keep your core tight when balance is almost always a factor. The workout can also complement a yoga practice. “With yoga, there is a lot of problems with hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders ... which weren’t really meant to be treated like feet,” Walsh
explains. “So if you’re a yogi, this is going to use the skills you have, but it’s also going to build up the areas where you’re weak and protect the areas that may have been overused.”
the blocks.) The hour-long class doesn’t involve routines or set a strict pace; the idea is not to watch yourself or the instructor in the mirror but to perform every movement mindfully.
The effect was to keep everything from the core out through each limb taut, always pushing on the blocks as you curse every ounce of flesh you’re having to balance on 4-by-6-inch foam platforms. They’re propped under your butt to extend your usual stretches; they’re under your elbows during reverse pushups. They’re wretched — and they get results.

B-Method For a week after this class, I was walking like the Tin Man looking for his oil can — but it wasn’t because of pain. As promised, I didn’t feel like I’d been “hit by a truck,” but the muscles in my stomach, butt and thighs (inner and back) were so stiff that I genuinely needed help picking things up from the floor. (My shoulders and triceps were barking too, though not to the same extent.) Walsh often had us place the blocks at asymmetrical spots — under one elbow and beneath the opposite knee for arm and leg extensions, which raises the difficulty level exponentially by forcing you to abandon any hope of momentum assisting you. (That tactic would’ve sent you crashing off

Productivity
If you want to make a dent in your to-do list, try to relax Everything is relative, especially when you’re stressed. Researchers have found that the emotional energy you spend worrying about how little time you have is actually making you feel more pressed for time than you would be if
you worried less. “Beyond the number of activities actually competing for their time, emotional conflict between activities makes consumers feel that they have even less time,” the authors write in the Journal of Marketing Research. Guilt, fear of missing out and anxiety over what they have to sacrifice leads people to feel more pressed for time than they actually are.
What to do: When anxiety starts to creep up as you’re thinking about your to-do list, focus on the physical symptoms first, like taking slower, deeper breaths. Once you’re back in control of your body, then tackle the emotional “residue” by converting that nervous anxiety into a similar high-energy feeling – like anticipation of how good you’ll feel when it’s done – that will refocus you. Diet. Cut back on meat without alienating the carnivore in your life. How’s your healthier eating resolution going? If you’ve had better intentions than followthrough, get back on the wagon with a change that won’t turn your life upside down: try skipping meat once a week. Diana Rice, a dietician with the Meatless Monday campaign, has plenty of meal suggestions. But she also speaks from experience when it comes to what will likely be your biggest obstacle (after cravings): your man. “My husband is from the South, and growing up, he didn’t really think about the advantages of vegetarian anything,” she says. Rice shared some ideas to win him over.
Play up other flavors in a familiar dish “Pasta is such a versatile dish. It’d definitely be the place I’d start,” says Rice. Use cherry tomatoes instead of sauce from a jar, fresh basil instead of dried and really good cheese, and he’ll forget he’s not eating meat. Shop at a farmers market so you’re buying what’s in season, when it tastes best.
Think like a guy If your guy likes steaks, try making a vegetable steak: Cut a 1-inch-thick slice out of a cauliflower, brush it with
olive oil and grill it, then serve it with A1 sauce. “Having the vegetable be a standalone in the same way we might expect the steak or a piece fish to be can help us overcome that mentality that there is something lacking,” says Rice.
Don’t get crazy “If you’re just starting out, don’t buy tempeh and try to make some really weird vegetarian thing that’s totally unfamiliar to you,” cautions Rice. Start with what you already know: chili with beans or using sauteed mushrooms as the main part of a dish. EVA KIS @thisiskis

Koji hoping to morph back to 2013 form, or close to it MLB. Koji Uehara is looking for his third straight successful season as Boston’s ninth inning man.
The ultimate success of the Red Sox in 2015 is dependent upon the performance of the oldest player on the team. No, not David Ortiz but, rather, closer Koji Uehara. Uehara will turn 40 years old on April 3, while Ortiz doesn’t turn 40 until Nov. 18. With the Red Sox’ rotation not being as strong as in years past, they will rely heavily on their bullpen and no one more than their closer in Uehara. After taking the baseball world by storm in 2013 on the way to the Red Sox winning the World Series and carrying it over to 2014, Uehara hit a wall last August and September. The closer had a miniscule 1.88 ERA over the first four months of the year, but that ballooned to 5.56 in August and 6.23 in September. His struggles were so bad he was taken out of the closer’s role and was shut down for a period of time. Even with his rough final two months, the Red Sox made him their first priority of the offseason, re-signing him to a

two-year, $18 million deal in late October. “It was more physical,” Uehara told reporters last week of his struggles late last year. “I didn’t talk about it at that time. I think I’m over it. ... I’m not going to go into specifics, but it wasn’t fatigue.” Putting the last two months of 2014 in the past and proving they were just two outlier months are very important when it comes to the success of the 2015 team. Uehara doesn’t even have to be like he was in 2013 — when he recorded a historic scoreless innings streak of 30 1/3 innings — he just needs to serve as a dependable closer. If Uehara does struggle, the Red Sox don’t really have a backup plan for the closer’s role. Edward Mujica showed promise but was inconsistent as a whole. Junichi Tazawa admitted during 2013 he doesn’t feel comfortable closing games. The Sox signed reliever Alexi Ogando this past offseason, but

he hasn’t thrown a pitch in a Boston uniform yet. With how explosive the Red Sox’ offense is expected to be this year, they are sure to have many leads going into the ninth inning. Nothing is more demoralizing for a team
than blowing leads in the final inning, and that is where Uehara comes into play. It’s pretty simple. If a team’s closer has a good season, more often than not the team has a good season. So as the 2015 season gets closer

But, always, he should be remembered for the 1,987 words he wrote on Sunday about his daughter, every last one of which was blazing heat right down the center of the plate. Last week, Schilling tweeted with a father’s exuberance that his daughter had been accepted to college. There were dozens upon dozens of tweets from fans, sharing in his emotion and congratulating the former six-time All-Star. But those positive notes were overshadowed by responses that were rude, lewd and completely unacceptable. So Schilling took to his blog to respond, outing several of the tweeters, including one employed by the New York Yankees.

One tweet even mentioned raping Schilling’s daughter, who is 17 years old and a senior in high school. In a deep and passionate response, a riveting piece of prose that was short on much acumen but was right in every one of its words, Schilling nailed it. What he wrote was the right thing with the right heart, a man who is showing to be an ace on the mound as well as in fatherhood. “The ignorance and pathetic lack of morals or of any integrity is astounding,” Schilling wrote midway through his blog. “These aren’t thugs, tough guys or badasses, these aren’t kids who’ve had it rough, they aren’t homeless or orphans, these are pretty much ALL white, affluent, college attending children, and I mean children. “A mistake is tweeting once and saying, ‘Damn, I’m an idiot’ and taking it down. These guys? They’re making conscious choices to cyberbully an amazing and beautiful young woman on the Internet, that none of them know by the way, because they don’t like her dad or they somehow think saying words you can teach a 5-year-old is tough?” He defended the dignity of his daughter, a young woman
who has worked hard for a chance to play a sport in college. And even if she wasn’t the daughter of a baseball legend or a public figure, no father should have to read the innermost thoughts of deranged young men who have a warped view of not just society, but women in general. The young woman that they mocked and crudely degraded instead is worthy of our respect. She didn’t rest on her famous last name, on the wealth of a man whose career has spanned now four decades as a player and in television as well as a small business owner. It would have been easy for her to rest on those laurels and coast through life with relative ease. Instead, as her father notes, she has trained for nearly 10 years for the chance to be a student athlete, and there is no doubt, based off the maturity of how she’s handled this situation, that she will be a testament to her college. There was no doubt that Schilling was ever anything but a winner in the game of baseball, but now he has saved his best and gutsiest effort for the family he loves. His last bit of heroics here will forever be Schilling’s greatest gem.
