LaGuardia crash casts light on airport’s safety Icy conditions. A routine flight ended in near tragedy, but the cause is still unclear. Despite the snow, ice, and even low visibility — a quarter of a mile at the time — by many accounts Delta flight 1086’s morning jaunt from Atlanta to New York should have been routine. It was anything but. Passengers say everything seemed normal, until the wheels made contact with Runway 13 around 11 a.m., and kept on going. Sliding — or skiing, as one passenger later described the experience — it hooked a left, crashed through a fence and came to abrupt stop atop a protective flood water berm, its left wing spewing fuel at a gallon a minute. FDNY pictures show the nose of the MD-88 precariously jutting out over Flushing Bay. There were 127 passengers and five crew on board. The FDNY said two dozen people suffered minor injuries — mostly back and neck — and three were taken to hospital. Phil Derner, founder of NYCAviation.com told Metro there’s no smoking gun he sees in the incident and said a unique circumstance — a tailwind shift or mechanical breakdown — are among possible causes.

A Delta Air Lines jetliner with 127 passengers and five crew members aboard slid off the runway upon landing during a snowstorm at LaGuardia Airport. The main runway is 7,003 feet long and 150 feet wide. Flushing Bay

Delta Flight 1086 was landing at LaGuardia’s main runway after a morning flight from Atlanta.

The MD-88 plane skidded off a snowy runway and slammed through a fence and stopped just short of Flushing Bay.

Far more prolific was new New York Giant Larry Donnell, who was coming up to sign a oneyear, $585,000 contract with the team. “Look at this s--,” he wrote with a video. “I knew I shoulda stayed my ass at home.”

The Port Authority, which runs the airports, repeatedly noted at a news conference that Runway 13 was just plowed. “That runway had been plowed literally minutes before, and other pilots declared good braking conditions,” Port Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye. Foye wouldn’t speculate on what went wrong. That will be determined by the National Transportation Safety Board, which has

opened an investigation. Derner shot down suggestions that perhaps the wintry weather should have grounded air travel. “There was really no reason for it to be closed,” he said. Airports are built to wintry weather like this, especially those in a town as important as The Big Apple, he said, and there are other airports shorter than LaGuardia’s 7,000 feet. A half hour before the crash, logs from LiveATC. net, which monitors air traffic controller chatter. recorded the control tower asking crews about runway conditions. The reply? There is an inch of slushy snow — and that no chemical melt had been used. “We’re just grooming and plowing,” one crewman says. Fiscal Times Editor-inChief Jacqueline Leo disagrees that LaGuardia’s stubby runways aren’t part of the problem. “Pilots hate to land in LaGuardia because the runways are short. Some have said it’s like trying to land a 747 as if it were a helicopter,” she wrote after the bad landing. “That begs the question — why haven’t we built a new, modern accessible airport in New York City, the nation’s business capital? Reason: We don’t have an infrastructure plan because our federal government is paralyzed.” JOHN A. OSWALD @MetroNewYork news@metro.us

Payday. Pizza deliverers get $2 million from Papa John’s Underpaid delivery workers who worked for five upper Manhattan Papa John’s locations are going to recoup their hardearned dollars. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who said he’s fighting a “crime wave” of wage theft against fastfood workers, announced a $2.1 million judgment against New Majority Holdings LLC and its owner, Ronald Johnson,

on Thursday. Bike deliveryman Luis Jimenez, who used to work at the 142nd Street and Broadway location, said he was only paid $5 an hour as a tipped employee to deliver food, but was assigned other work, such as making pizza, and should have been paid minimum wage. Jimenez said that after his bike was stolen, his bosses said he needed to buy another one, or be fired.

Johnson will be responsible for repaying some 447 workers the wages he owes them, as well as unreimbursed expenses and interest. Pizza sales from New Majority’s remaining locations will go toward paying back the workers, as would any proceeds from selling the stores themselves. “We can only bring cases when workers have the courage to come for-

ward,” said Schneiderman, urging underpaid workers — many of whom are immigrants and English is limited — to call the AG’s Labor Bureau. Schneiderman filed the lawsuit against Johnson in October, after a year-long investigation found workers were paid as little as $5 an hour, paid less than the number of hours they worked and denied overtime.

De Blasio surprises Hunts Point with $150M pledge Food jobs. Mayor promises to invest in the South Bronx food market to boost jobs. The hub for most of New York City’s food supply is slated for a $150 million, 12-year investment from City Hall, in a move designed to boost blue-collar jobs in one of the city’s poorest neighborhoods. Mayor Bill de Blasio broke the news at an Association for a Better New York breakfast Thursday as he again pitched his progressive vision to local business leaders. The city first established the market on the South Bronx peninsula in 1972 with six buildings. The complex continued

to grow over the last few decades but vendors have long complained about outdated infrastructure susceptible to future storms as it sits on the banks of the East and Bronx rivers. The sum, de Blasio announced, is on top of a federal commitment of $45 million for resiliency projects after Superstorm

Sandy. “These are good, decentpaying jobs for New Yorkers at every education level, he told the crowd. “Our plan protects those jobs and positions the site to create many more jobs for New Yorkers in the future. More than 8,000 people work at the 329-acre Hunts Point that hosts about

115 private wholesalers and generates some $3 billion in yearly sales. No operators, vendors or labor groups involved with the market said they were aware of the commitment before Metro spoke to them. Metro spoke with several people involved in day-to-day operations at the market who said they knew nothing about the mayor’s plan, and wondered who de Blasio had spoken with. Neither City Hall nor the city’s Economic Development Corporation, which has overseen much of Hunts Point’s revitalization efforts, responded to Metro’s request for comment. However, city officials did confirm that the $150 million investment would come from the city’s capital budget for infrastruc-

The plan also calls for businesses in the markets to coinvest in urgent short-term repairs and rail operations along Food Center Drive. “We look forward to hearing more about today’s announcement, specifically how these funds would impact the market’s infrastructure needs, said Mike Loughran, a spokesman for Hunts Point’s produce market that opened in 1967. Selma comes to Brooklyn on Saturday for bridge march Civil rights. Brooklyn Bridge march to commemorate 50th anniversary. This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday and the historic marches in Selma, Alabama, that paved the way for the civil rights movement and the passage of the Voters Right Act. Civil rights attorney Norman Siegel and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams want to bring the spirit of Selma to New York City, and are planning a march across the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday, followed by a viewing of President Obama’s speech from Selma at Brooklyn Borough Hall. Siegel said he planned

to organize a New York delegation to Selma, but was disappointed last weekend to find out all the local hotels in Alabama were booked. On Tuesday, Siegel and Adams decided to bring Selma to Brooklyn. “You usually need a week, if not more, to organize something like this

… even if it’s 100 people, it’s important,” said Siegel, adding he’s expecting up to 200 marchers. Siegel, who marched in Selma in 1967, said this year’s anniversary is a reminder of civil rights progress, but also the obstacles that remain, such as voting restrictions in some states, racism in

police departments and the need for grand jury reforms. “Until government officials admit there’s a racial problem, we’re not realistically going to be able to overcome the problem,” Siegel said. “In some ways, the issues 50 years ago were clearer, more elemental. Today, in a place like New York and other urban areas, racism is more sophisticated and more subtle,” Siegel said. “Back then it was black and white; Today it’s more gray,” Siegel said. “Fifty years later, Selma is no longer a city, it is a belief, that people have the right to be free from persecution,” Adams said. “We hope everyone finds their own Pettus Bridge.” WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE Wendy.Biddlecombe@metro.us

Christie’s Exxon deal questioned Politics. A lastminute deal over damaged wetlands may have done more damage to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. A former top EPA official is blasting Gov. Chris Christie for signing off on a $225 million deal to settle a decade-old lawsuit against Exxon Mobil for widespread pollution. The state had already won the case — a court found that the oil giant had, in fact, wreaked major environmental havoc on the state with its refineries and service stations. Experts estimated the damage to be $8.9 billion.

The court was deliberating just how much to fine the company when Christie’s team announced the $225 million settlement. Bradley Campbell, a lawyer and the state’s former environmental chief who in 2004 launched the suit, was flabbergasted. “The decision by the administration of Gov. Chris Christie to settle an environmental lawsuit against Exxon Mobil Corporation for roughly three cents on the dollar after more than a decade of litigation is an embarrassment to law enforcement and good government,” Campbell wrote in a New York Times OpEd headlined “Shortchanging New Jersey by Billions.” “While he was chairman of the Republican Governors Association in 2014, the group received $500,000 from Exxon and

“An embarrassment to law enforcement and good government” Campbell more from company employees. While this was not Exxon’s first contribution to the group, this donation was made at a time when the New Jersey trial was pending,” he wrote. Democrats are now vowing to hold hearings March 19 to probe the deal and some critics suggest the deal was struck to get money into the economically-struggling state’s coffers to shore up Christie’s national ambitions. Ambition. Christie’s White House chances nearly nil, analyst says Does New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie have a real shot of taking his in-your-face bluster to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.? To borrow a phrase: Fuggedaboutit! His polls are down and he had a miserable showing at a conservative political conference last weekend. And now, National Review is placing an illustration of a chagrinedlooking Christie on its Friday cover, depicting him as Gen. Washington crossing the Delaware in an all-but sunk boat.

“I don’t think his schtick plays in the heartland,” says Doug Muzzio, the dean of New York City political analysts and Baruch College public affairs professor. It’s not style that’s hurting him most, Muzzio tells Metro. It’s the economy. “It’s things like the pension fund crisis. He didn’t create it but he didn’t solve it,” Muzzio says. “And his failure to replenish the transportation fund. New Jersey’s infrastructure is falling apart.” The state’s economy

was ranked 35th Tuesday by Business Insider, just beating out Pennsylvania, but behind Kansas and Montana. New York was 11th, Massachusetts 10th, Connecticut, 23rd. In a closely watched straw poll last weekend of activists in the GOP’s base, Christie placed 10th, with 2.8 percent. Among those ahead of him were developer Donald Trump in 8th, ex-Florida. Gov. Jeb Bush, 5th. and the winner, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, with 25.7 percent. JOHN A. OSWALD

Interview with Inna Shevchenko. ‘We change people’s mentality’ They are the feminists (in) famous for their barebreasted protests targeting everything from Vladimir Putin to fashion week. But just who are FEMEN? Metro chats to Inna Shevchenko, the 24-yearold leader of the protest group, who was granted political asylum in France after fleeing Ukraine and continues her activism from a training base she established there. Why did you join FEMEN? It was a lucky circumstance. In 2009 I was studying journalism at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and worked at the press office of Kiev’s mayor. Yes, I saw problems that women face in Ukraine: some of my friends had to spend a night with teachers to pass exams. But I never thought I’d enter such an organization, they did not ever exist in the same form. One day I received a message on Facebook saying:

“Hello, we are women’s movement FEMEN, we are against prostitution. Join us.” I have never thought if I’m for or against prostitution, so I was very surprised. But, anyway, I decided to visit this meeting just to observe. It was a gloomy scene: A Soviet-style café, 15 samelooking girls around the table, two cups of tea that they were sharing. We discussed how prostitution uses women, about our weariness of sex tourists who roam the Ukrainian streets, etc. But we were taught by our mothers, that every woman has to find a husband. So, there is no need to look for a husband? There is a need to search for your rights. Even in Europe there’s a belief that feminism should not exist, due to the many protests in the ’70s. Women got the right to vote. That’s a victory? It’s only the first step. So, better not to search for

Actor Harrison Ford seriously injured in small-plane crash Fire Department. They said that the sole occupant of the plane was in critical condition at a local hospital. Actor Harrison Ford was seriously injured on Thursday in the crash of a small airplane on a Los Angeles golf course, celebrity website TMZ and local media reported. Reuters could not immediately confirm the TMZ report, which said Ford, 72, suffered multiple gashes to his head and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Carlos Lugo, 63, said he was playing golf at the Penmar Golf Course when he saw a plane that

he believed had taken off from nearby Santa Monica Airport lose power and turn around in an apparent attempt to return to the runway. “When he flew over us we knew it was too late to make it back to the airport,” Lugo said. The plane went through some trees and landed belly-up near the eighth hole at the golf course, he said. Ford, best known for his roles in such blockbuster films as “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” franchises, is a longtime aviation enthusiast. TMZ reported that the plane appeared to be a vintage two-seater fighter plane and posted photos of the badly damaged yellow aircraft crumpled on the golf course grass.

recalled watching people trying in vain to revive 8-year-old Martin Richard, one Boston police officer remembered administering CPR to 29-year-old Krystle Campbell and a second officer said she left the body of 23-year-old Lingzi Lu only when ordered to by her captain, amid fears there could be a third bomb. Defendant Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 21, has admitted through his attorneys that he and his older brother carried out the April 15, 2013, bombing that killed three people and injured 264. He is also on trial for the fatal shooting of a police officer three days later. But he has not changed his plea from not guilty, leaving it to a jury to convict him and, if they do, to determine whether to sentence him to death or life in prison without possibility of parole.

US warns about youths seeking Islamic State connection

Review of Hillary Clinton emails to take months: U.S. official

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security have warned law enforcement agencies across the country about American youths wanting to join Islamic State militants fighting in the Middle East, officials said on Thursday. The joint intelligence bulletin was issued during the weekend and law enforcement said such warnings are routine. One official said there was no increase in government threat levels, although there is heightened concern lately about recruitment of American and other foreign fighters by Islamic State.

A growing controversy over Democrat Hillary Clinton’s use of personal email for work while she was U.S. secretary of state could drag on for months, threatening to cloud the expected launch of her 2016 presidential campaign. Clinton tried to cool the brewing firestorm late on Wednesday, saying she wanted the State Department to release the emails quickly. But a senior State Department official told Reuters on Thursday the task would take time. “The review is likely to take several months given the sheer volume of the document set,” the official said. The roots of rock salt

In upstate New York, one small town has been mining the salt that clears snow and ice from winter roads for over a century. PHOTOS BY JONATHAN LIPKIN “It’s dark everywhere in the mine, darkest dark you’ve ever seen. You don’t know darkness till you’ve been down there. You go down there and you don’t know if your eyes are open or shut.” says miner Jesse Kingston. Entry to the mine is through an elevator which drops 1,770 feet to a series of excavated caves covering an area nearly the size of Manhattan. The mine reopened in 1997, after a flood shut it in 1994. Today, the American Rock Salt Co. mine in Hampton Corners, produces 10,000

to 18,000 tons of salt each day, shipped by truck and rail across the Northeast. Salt is extracted from the mine through the undercut process. In salt caverns deep below ground, a giant chain saw on wheels cuts along the bottom of the salt face. Holes are drilled in the face, filled with explosives and detonated. Daylight saving time. Don’t be a zombie when the clocks roll back this Sunday morning. This Sunday, daylight saving time will come to collect on that extra hour you were given back in November as we all take that involuntary leap into the future at 2 a.m. It means one fewer hour to get dinner ready, one less hour to exercise, and most importantly, one less hour to sleep. What exactly are the effects of losing this precious hour? “It’s more than losing an hour,” Pete Bils, the vice president of sleep innovation and clinical research at Sleep Number mattress company, tells us. “If you actually set the table and look at the timeframe of daylight saving time, it’s kind of setting up a perfect storm of sleep problems.” The biggest problem: On Monday morning, we’re going to be scraping the bottom of a barrel that rarely gets filled up. “We’re just not well slept to begin with,” Bils says. “So now we’re going to rob another hour this weekend. That’s gonna put

a lot of the people into the danger zone.” Bils explains that the Monday after we push our clocks forward is rife with disaster, with higher instances of accidents both on the roads and in the workplace. Think of it as jet lag without the traveling, or like trying to function while a little drunk. If you’ve made a habit of skipping out on sleep, the consequences are even more worrisome. “Poor sleep affects just about evTips

erything that is measurable in the human body,” Bils says. “When you’re sleepdeprived, you’re at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease, you’re at a higher risk for heart attacks and strokes, you’re three to five times more likely to catch a cold [because] your immune system takes a whack as well.” Lack of sleep can even make you depressed. “Every bout of depression is preceded by a sleep issue,” Bils explains. “If the depression is then treated, relapse almost always happens after another bout of sleep problems. Our emotional systems are highly dependent on really good sleep. So go to bed!” You’ll get through this Monday (despite what you may think), and don’t forget to acknowledge that you may not be at your best. “Usually, the advice I give to people is on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, just lay low,” Bils warns. “Don’t make any big decisions, be more careful than you normally would, don’t accept marriage proposals — don’t do anything that’s critical.” MATTHEW LEE @mattlee2669

P.C. RICHARD & SON REAPS WHAT IT SOWS WITH SUCCESSFUL MATTRESS THRUST

“T

here’s never been a time I didn’t want to work here,” says a quietly enthusiastic Gregg Richard who, like his father, grandfather and great-grandfather before him, has contributed mightily to building family-owned, Long Islandbased P.C. Richard & Son into a home appliances and electronics powerhouse. And, in case it has escaped your notice, you can now add mattresses to the products sold by P.C. Richard & Son — but more about that in a moment. From its humble beginnings as a single hardware store in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn 105 years ago, P.C. Richard & Son has evolved into a 66-store chain with units in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut, and annual sales of more than $1.4 billion. While competitors — Circuit City, Newmark & Lewis, Crazy Eddie and Nobody Beats the Wiz, to name a few — have come and gone, P.C. Richard & Son has flourished, more as the result of paying keen attention to customer service than any other factor. As one observer of the Northeast’s retail landscape puts it, “Lots of retailers pay lip service to the importance of customer service — but, for P.C. Richard & Son, the words are at the very foundation of its business philosophy. Indeed, customer service is a virtual religion whose principles each of its 2,800 employees is expected to abide by and practice avidly.” Wryly, he adds, “At times, I think Gregg believes that his CEO title stands for ‘chief evangelistic orator.’”

“It’s true,” says Gregg, at 50 the company’s president and CEO (as in chief executive officer) and leading

HAKERS evangelist, who spreads the gospel of customer service on a daily basis. “I’m possessed by the subject,” he acknowledges. “In fact, I often wake up in the wee hours of the morning thinking about how we can better serve our customers. What’s more, I never let a day go by without reading every e-mail, text and letter that comes in from them, answering as many as I can personally.” To hear Gregg tell it, it was his customers who influenced the company to add mattresses to its standard product lines of home appliances and electronics. “You’d be surprised at the number of customers who suggested it,” he says. “Several months ago, Gregg and his team decided to test the concept in the company’s seven stores in Connecticut. “On the surface, it made all sorts of sense,” he says. “After all, we had the showroom and warehousing space; the trucking and next-day delivery capabilities; the advertising expertise, as well as the seasoned salespeople who, once acquiring the appropriate product knowledge, could trade on their relationships with existing customers.” After a brief pause, Gregg notes, “Most importantly, our customers knew that they could trust us.” The test-marketing of mattresses exceeded his wildest dreams. “After two weeks,” he says, “we decided to go full-steam ahead. It was clear that we couldn’t do this fast enough — and I couldn’t have been happier with the results.” Quiet, measured, down to earth and “comfortable in his own skin,” Gregg has backed up his desire to move quickly with decisive action. The first New York City store, on busy 86th Street, opened its mattress gallery shortly after Labor Day. Since then, no less than 30 locations of the company’s 66 showrooms have followed, including all showrooms in New Jersey. “By early next year, all 66 stores will boast a mattress gallery,” he says. The competition, namely Sleepy’s, which has upwards of 1,000 mattress showrooms throughout the Northeast, has noticed too. As the retail pundit quoted

earlier observes, “I hardly think it was coincidental that Sleepy’s changed its slogan from The Mattress Professionals to The Only Mattress Professionals.” When asked to comment, Gregg declines. “We don’t like to talk about the competition’s business; rather, we prefer to focus on our own business.” Gregg admits that his focus has never been sharper. Uncomplainingly, he says, “I spend a tremendous amount of time traveling to all of our stores and talking to our employees. Having worked in every possible job over the 35 years I’ve been with the company, I know what questions to ask and I’m good at identifying problems, needs and opportunities.” Reminded that, more than 30 years ago, he was overheard commenting on how much he loved driving a truck for P.C. Richard & Son, his job at the time, there’s a short burst of laughter and the admission: “You know, I really, really did love driving a truck, but I love doing what I’m doing now even more.” He isn’t quite finished and he adds thoughtfully, “I am very confident about where we’re at and where we’re going. P.C. Richard & Son is in a unique position and our relationships with our customers, employees and manufacturers are what got us here on this 105year journey. I realize we need to earn our customers’ business every day and that’s what drives all of our 2,800 employees to do better on a daily basis.” Asked who’s going to replace him when he decides to retire, the fourth generation leader of the Richard’s family business says that 24-year-old Scott, one of his four children and fifth generation, is already on board learning the business. “But don’t rush me,” he adds. “Scott’s not ready yet and I’m having too much fun to even think about stepping down.” And while he didn’t say it in so many words, the company’s successful thrust into the mattress business hasn’t hurt his sunny disposition one bit. by Ira Ellenthal

THE DREAM

“The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” premieres today on Netflix streaming. / ERIC LIEBOWITZ, NETFLIX Familiar faces

Don’t worry, Jane’s back

“30 Rock” fans will be excited to see Jane Krakowski in the new show, playing the wealthy, selfabsorbed mother of the mildly disturbed tot Kimmy ends up nannying. Are you picking up anything from working with Jane? What I love is she’ll do anything for the joke. Whatever is required. She’s such a lady in real life, and she’s so warm and polished and I just feel better when I’m around her, and, you know, she smells good. And then she’ll do these things, like whatever the scene calls for. No vanity, no pride, whatever it takes to get the joke done. Which is what you should do! I feel silly saying, “She’s a pro.” Of course she is! She’s Jane Krakowski.

Interview. Former “Office” star Ellie Kemper takes on the lead role in Tina Fey’s “30 Rock” follow up.

a half ago, and then a few months later, I met with them again and they had the idea for the show. I think that Bob Greenblatt, who is the head of NBC, had asked if they would be interested in writing a show with me in mind and they said yes.

Most people are trying to hide one or two weird things about themselves in their day-to-day lives, but Kimmy Schmidt, the main character in Tina Fey’s new Netflix show “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” is hiding something quite a bit weirder than most. She’s just escaped a doomsday cult after 15 years, but that isn’t stopping her from trying to make a go of it in New York City. And who better to play the wide-eyed innocence of someone who grew up in an underground bunker than Ellie Kemper, who’s made something of a specialty of playing innocents?

Having Tina Fey write a show for you must be pretty exciting. Oh my god, it’s like the biggest honor of all time. I have trouble believing that it happened, but it did happen, because I know the show is coming out on Friday, but it’s absolutely surreal.

This part really seems made for you. Was it written with you in mind? What happened was, I met with Tina Fey and [co-creator] Robert Carlock, just at a general meeting about a year and

Tina’s looking out for Ellie The show moved from NBC to Netflix, which meant that episodes could go longer, and also that Kimmy could get up to slightly more risque activities, but when talking

Were you a big “30 Rock” fan? Yes. What if now I wasn’t? And I was like, “And now I’m not!” No, I was an enormous fan. I loved “30 Rock,” I loved “Bossypants.” She’s a cultural icon, which adds to the surrealness of it all that I would actually get to work with her. But I was a huge fan. The show has a pretty dark premise. How do you balance that darkness with this

being a sitcom and having jokes? The subject matter is so serious and tragic and dark and needs to be dealt with very carefully. Robert and Tina did a great job of working with such a dark premise and were able to make a comedy from it. At first, I also was worried about, like, “OK, am I doing this appropriately? Am I portraying this character as she should be portrayed?” And the writing is so key to that, of course. When something tragic or dark does happen, it doesn’t mean you have to shy away from comedy. Why do you think people like casting

to the New York Times about it, Fey quashed that idea.“We’ve met [Kemper’s] mom,” she said. “We’re not going to do that to her. Unless, we can’t get up to 24 minutes.”

you as these innocent characters? Just on a very surface level, I have a really big face, so I think that when I smile, it’s just a big smile, because it’s in proportion to the rest of my face. So there’s that, which might have something to do with playing these wide-eyed smiley characters. Some of the characters I play err on the side of ditzy, but Kimmy is not a ditz. Any lack of knowledge she has is purely from a lack of experience and not a lack of intelligence. There’s a resourcefulness and a craftiness there that enables her to go through those 15 years in the bunker. You can’t be a survivor unless you are smart. This likely won’t make any other actors feel too great about their prospects, but even Judi Dench says that finding work is tough. And that’s after winning an Oscar, becoming a dame and appearing in seven James Bond films. So what hope does the rest of the acting community have? “I take what’s offered. I don’t think it gets easier,” Dench offers. “It’s the same thing with everybody, I think, that you play something, and very often after that you’re sent something that is very, very similar to what you’ve just done. It’s the last thing you want to do. I keep saying to my agent, ‘Can’t you find this play where it’s about an Afghan woman who learns to walk the tightrope and then in the last act gets turned into a dragon?’” While she waits for some enterprising young playwright to craft that exact work for her, she’s revisiting some previous work for a sequel to the 2011 surprise hit “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” And while it might sound surprising for a woman who has played some fairly terrifying and challenging roles, aging expat Evelyn proved to be one of her most difficult — because the character is so close to herself. “Four years ago, the one thing that worried me was that I used to be made up and get into my clothes and they’d say, ‘OK, you’re ready.’ And I’d look into the mirror and I’d think, I don’t know where this person is because all I see is me looking exactly like me wearing clothes that I would wear,” she admits. Dench admits the success of the first “Marigold Hotel” was something of a surprise, but she has a theory as to why it resonated with audiences. “I think it

was probably the last thing people thought it was going to be,” she says. “It was about a lot of people over a certain age who didn’t give up, who were all prepared to take on a risk of some kind and had a bit of life left in them — which you know, after a while people don’t think you should have.” So, then, how about a third installment? She’s up for it, and she even knows someone who would top Richard Gere’s appearance in the series’ second entry. “Johnny Depp. Especially playing with me,” she reveals, giggling uncontrollably. “What’s the magic in Johnny Depp? Sex, of course.”

Bonus question

Dench’s death-defying stunts Judi Dench admits that tackling “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” — as well as the original film — felt a bit like a con on her part. “If you’re paid to go to India for eight weeks one year, and four years later you go back? Bewitching,” she says. “And with a per diem! Paid for being there, just learn the lines, get on with it, do it as well as you can.” But doing as well as you can is difficult sometimes, like when director John Madden has her riding on the back of a motorcycle with co-star Bill Nighy — a key image from the first film that’s repeated in the sequel. “That was pretty hairy,” Dench admits. “You know he has this thing, Bill, where he has that carpal what’sit’s-name? So he has to drive it [with two fingers from each hand]. And I’m on the back thinking, ‘Oh well, it’s all right,’ but then John says, ‘And now wave!’” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

Sentient robot Chappie (voice of and mo-cap by Sharlto Copley) gets some bling and tags. STEPHANIE BLOMKAMP

Sci-fi thriller. ‘Chappie’ is ‘District 9’ director Neill Blomkamp’s sloppiest film yet “District 9” director Neill Blomkamp returns to Johannesburg for another quasi-satirical spectacle, this one about a robotic cop granted apparent consciousness, as well as the voice and body movements of Sharlto Copley. He falls in with a gang of low-rent thieves, who raise him to be a super-thief. The lowdown: Like Copley, Blomkamp is not gentle. He’s ecstatically sloppy — a sugar-high kid with too many toys, running around a playroom knocking things over. This lack of care can be thrilling, as in the relentless, squirty climax of “District 9.” And it can be troubling, as in the way, in the same film,

some of the baddies are poor black South Africans. “Chappie” has a different problem: It doesn’t only have bad storytelling, but it doesn’t seem particularly engaged with the world it has dreamt up. It creates a promising premise, but can barely be bothered to explore it, even for its own pulpy kicks. Dodgy as it is, there’s a nobility and honor to “Chappie.” Like Copley’s probably divisive but game turn, it’s committed to a vision, one further enlivened by the presence of South African rap duo Die Antwoord, who play Chappie’s criminal “parents.” Much of “Chappie” is regurgitated business, and most of that is lifted from

Sequel. Turns out ‘The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ is not as good as the first The old British legends hanging out at a rundown Indian hotel-cumretirement home are back, this time dealing with a new set of hesitant romances, semi-farcical misunderstandings, very light drama and the cold specter of encroaching mortality. And because any movie with three or more old-timers means one of them must be saucy, that means nice Celia Imrie’s Madge has to read “Fifty Shades of Grey” and make Bond-ian double entendres about franchise newbie Richard Gere’s business. The lowdown: If this were the 1930s, there would be two, maybe three, “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” entries every year, cranked out a la Mickey Rooney’s prolific Review ‘The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ Director: John Madden Stars: Judi Dench, Bill Nighy Rating: PG

and hugely profitable Andy Hardy series. In its two entries so far, the franchise has exhibited the same unfailingly modest and easily-regurgitated charm. This is to say story does not matter. Some plot threads will disappear for stretches or be forgotten about entirely. One will be resolved via an extravagant dance number. Never will the complicated notion of Brits invading an old colony be addressed, nor will the title: selfdeprecating joke or just a title? Technically this is more hang-out movie than plot-movie, but the actors don’t really spend time together so much as endlessly deploy the same few character tics. Bill Nighy stammers. Judi Dench pouts. Maggie Smith glowers. Imrie does her best “View to a Kill”era Roger Moore. No one is called on to do more, and yet they’re such pros that even doing next-to-nothing is infused with great weight. In fact, Nighy, Dench and Smith effortlessly complicate their thin business with deep notes of regret and longing — feelings the blue-print of a screenplay could never dream of turning into words or actions. What actually

happens in “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” doesn’t matter, and it goes on so long — only a half-hour shorter than “Goodfellas” — that you may forget your life before the film began. Like the hotel itself, it’s a movie held together by bubble gum and

duct tape — a two-star residence at best that nevertheless feels cozy. If all that happened in the inevitable “The Third Best Exotic Marigold Hotel: Dream Warriors” is they played shuffleboard — well, that actually might be preferable to what happens here. MATT PRIGGE

While Hozier is shy about performing, he’s not afraid to confront social injustices in his music. “I think that it’s sad that what people think is controversial is that there’s a lad kissing in it rather

than the implied murder at the end of it,” he says of the reaction to his provocative “Take Me To Church” short, which sees a gay couple violently attacked by a gang for their sexuality.

Re: ‘Celebrate feminist men on Women’s Day’ (Metro, March 5) I cannot express how profoundly disappointed and outraged I am. As if our world isn’t male-dominated enough, we must now pay tribute to male feminists on International Women’s Day? Did columnist Jenna Busch even take a moment to Google prominent or ground-breaking women throughout the world before settling on male feminists as the real stars of contemporary feminism? In case research trouble resulted in this atrocity of an opinion piece, please let me provide a list of contemporary women who are doing amazing things

Taurus | April 21-May 21 Negativity will be your downfall. Don’t allow selfdoubt or indecisiveness to keep you from taking an advanced position. You will succeed in any venture. Sudoku: Easy and hard

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

throughout the world: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (writer), Malala Yousufzai (education activist), Eqbal Asa’d (youngest doctor in the world), Reshma Saujani (founder of Girls Who Code), or Mae Jemison (first African-American woman in space). I purposefully left out women in the entertainment industry because Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, and Beyonce should be rather well-known feminists by now, and yet Busch didn’t profile any of them either. You could have spotlighted female politicians, female scientists, female authors (we are, as Busch pointed out, 51 percent of the population, so there are a lot of us) but instead you chose male feminists, who deserve a cookie at most for being decent human beings. Retooling of Giants’ ‘D’ an absolute must NFL. The Giants will have to get crafty during free agency period.

Suh me All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh will hit the open market on March 10. •

As the new league year — and pending free agency period — draws closer, the Giants find themselves at a bit of a crossroads. There are plenty of holes to fill. And with the franchise tagging of star defensive end Jason PierrePaul, that means Big Blue’s already modest salary cap space goes from $25 million to roughly $15 million — unless the team and Pierre-Paul can come to an agreement on a long-term deal. While Pierre-Paul is currently taken care of, and head coach Tom Coughlin will avoid lame-duck status, there’s still work to do for general manager Jerry Reese. The maligned Reese hinted at last month’s scouting combine that there’s a pressing need to retool a defense that is under new management —- led by new defensive co-

His asking price is reportedly six years, $100 million. Too rich for the Giants blood. There is this, though: Suh loves the idea of playing in the New York market.

ordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Reese and Coughlin will be very busy next week trying to figure out the best pieces to fit Spagnuolo’s puzzle. Spagnuolo, who was the Giants’ defensive coordinator from 2007-09, will

already be without the services of one of his favorite players, Mathias Kiwanuka, as the versatile defensive lineman was released last week for cap purposes. The new defensive coordinator may also lose other key veterans should they refuse to provide the Giants with cap-friendly pay cuts or contract restructuring. Two names that may reportedly be asked to take a financial hit — or hit the road — are linebacker Jon Beason and cornerback Prince Amukamara. But with the pricey Pierre-Paul back in the mix, the Giants are going to have to get creative in free agency and really hit on all prospects in the draft, because Spagnuolo may not have much left to work with. The defense that Spagnuolo will install relies on pressure from its front-four linemen. But if they can’t generate the necessary rush, then the entire defense is compromised.

NFL. Wilfork likely on the market after Pats decline to pick up option In a move that was several years in the making, the Patriots are letting Vince Wilfork free. New England will now have an extra $8.06 million in salary cap space to work with. The former All-Pro defensive tackle announced the Pats’ decision himself on Twitter. “I want to take the time just to let everyone know that I was informed on Tuesday that the Patriots will not be picking up my option,” Wilfork wrote.

“I’m in a good place. I have a great relationship with the Patriots organization. Please know how blessed my family and I have been to be able to play 11 years in New England for an amazing organization. The love you guys as fans have shown me have been my inspiration year in and year out ... I have played 11 years for the greatest head coach ever! I’ve played next to men that I now have as brothers for a lifetime.” It was far from a retirement speech, however, as the 33-year-old Wilfork said he wants to continue to play in the league. Yankees may go captain-less Yankees general manager Brian Cashman doesn’t believe the franchise should ever hand out the captaincy title again now that Derek Jeter, the ultimate Yankees captain, is retired. “As far as I’m concerned, and I’m not the decision maker on this, that captaincy should be retired with No. 2, Cashman told Mike Lupica on ESPN Radio. “I wouldn’t give up another captain’s title to anyone else.MATT BURKE

Giants tight end Larry Donnell was on board a Delta Airlines ight that skidded o the runway while landing at LaGuardia Airport Thursday morning. Donnell released a statement, through the Giants, on the incident. “I’m blessed to be safe and sound after our plane skidded o the runway at LaGuardia airport today,â€? the statement read. “I feel ďŹ ne physically and hopefully all the other passengers did not have any signiďŹ cant injuries. We were all shocked and alarmed when the plane started to skid, but most importantly, as far as I know, all of the passengers and ight crew were able to exit the plane safely.â€? MATT BURKE

In what could possibly be a Stanley Cup Final preview, the Rangers (39-17-7) and Blackhawks (38-21-5) will tangle in Chicago on Sunday (7:30 p.m., NBCSN). New York is coming o a Wednesday loss to the Red Wings, who won on a Marek Zidlicky power-play goal 1:09 into overtime. It was a frustrating loss for the Rangers in that they outshot Detroit, 27-16, in the ďŹ rst two periods. New York continues to wait on the return of netminder Henrik Lundqvist, who missed his 15th straight game Wednesday due to a vascular injury in his

neck. NBCSN reported earlier this week that Lundqvist could return in 10-14 days. MATT BURKE
