Tips on surviving daylight saving time from a sleep expert

Last week’s episodes of The Voice were punctuated by a round of impressive auditions, and one of the most memorable was India Carney, a Brooklyn native and LaGuardia High School graduate, who turned all four chairs with her powerhouse rendition of “New York State of Mind.” Carney grew up in Crown Heights and is now in Los Angeles studying classical music at UCLA. She’s leading a band named after herself and recently opened for The Roots. India Carney spoke to Metro about her bid for stardom.

OkCupid hacks: Five lessons from a math genius

So tell us a little about yourself, India. I grew up and still live in Crown Heights. I went to PS 321 in Park Slope for elementary school, and that’s when I started developing a passion for music. I started learning music when I was two, when I went to the Brooklyn Conservatory. When I got there I continued with band, choir and drama and all that stuff. I went to Mark Twain (intermediate school) on Coney Island. Then I went to La Guardia [high school] in the city to study voice again.

How did it feel?

What was it like turning four chairs? That was incredible. I love the concept of this show because it focuses on your vocals and what

you can do with them. It’s also nerve-wracking, because you can’t use your stage presence or anything else to turn them around! It’s just your voice. After I turned the four chairs, I could finally relax a little bit.

Inspirations

ing as well.

“I really love Adele. I love Michael Jackson, and have since I was thirteen. Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder. Justin Sullivan, Coldplay, John Mayer. I love Audra McDonald. I grew up listening to a lot of R&B and I sang in church.” Coney Island? It was a classically trained program. I wasn’t necessarily deep into opera. I wasn’t getting into opera until high school. In addition to LaGuardia I also studied at Manhattan School of Music for their pre-college division and that’s when I started getting more into opera.

What did you do on

What about your family? Are there any other performers? No, my dad knows one song on the piano that he can play very well, and my mom just sings along with music. I have a younger sister who is now at La Guardia too, and studying at Juilliard on the weekend. She plays trombone and she’s getting into sing-

in Brooklyn Kingsborough Houses, had a verbal altercation with Isaiah Lee early Friday and just before 1 p.m. that same day showed up at the victim’s home in

the Carleton Manor houses in Arverne, Queens and fatally shot him in the face and chest in his doorway, cops said. Lee was rushed to St.

How does the music scene on the West Coast compare to back home? You still have the hustle on both coasts. I’ve found it a little bit easier and little bit more welcoming out here. People are excited to meet the next talent and introduce them to new people and just get networking going. Why did you choose Christina Aguilera to be your coach? I grew up with her, [so] I felt like this was the perfect opportunity to learn from her one on one. It seemed like she was fighting the most for me and really wanted me on her team. She was the first one to turn. I still don’t believe it. Where do you see yourself in five years? I’d like to be an established solo recording artist. I don’t know if I can get to Broadway in five years, but I would love to. That’s been a big part of my life. Then segueing into some acting on film or TV. MATT LEE @METRONEWYORK matthew.lee@metro.us

Deadly homes. Crackdown plan for illegally divided apartments Four months after a devastating fire in an apartment above a Flatbush Avenue church, elected officials are taking on the issue of illegally-converted apartments. Councilmembers Jumaane Williams and Vincent Gentile, and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams say they’ll introduce legislation later this week to crack down on illegally subdivided housing. Williams said there have been two fires in his district this year because of illegal conversions, He wants to go after building owners who subdivide units and create dangerous living conditions -- some with low-hanging wires, no heat, light or smoke detectors. The legislation would create a new building code violation called aggravated illegal conversion, and would levy a $15,000 fine on landlords who carve single homes or apartments into three or more

Thousands of people gather to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama. / GETTY IMAGES

Thousands march in Selma, Ala. Anniversary. There is a renewed focus on racial disparities and anger over law enforcers’ treatment of black civilians. Thousands of people began walking across a Selma, Alabama bridge on Sunday in a re-enactment of the 1965 “Bloody Sunday march, part of a weekend of events marking the 50th anniversary of a turning point in the U.S. civil rights movement. Some of those gathered in Selma also planned to set out Monday on a march to Montgomery along the route that Martin Luther King Jr. and his followers walked in the wake of Bloody Sunday, a march that helped spur the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Bloody Sunday on March 7, 1965, took its name from the beating that roughly 600 peaceful civil rights activists sustained at the hands of white state troopers and police who attacked them with batons and sprayed them with tear gas on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. “It’s very crowded but

at the same time it’s fun and really great to see everybody coming together all races, all people, one woman told CNN as marchers began moving across the bridge. Among the demonstrators were those calling for immigration and gay rights. President Barack Obama visited Selma on Saturday and declared the work of the U.S. civil rights movement advanced but unfinished in the face of ongoing racial tension. “Fifty years from Bloody Sunday, our march is not yet finished, but we’re getting closer, Obama, the first black president of the United States, said as he stood near the bridge. U.S. Representative John Lewis, who led the march across the bridge 50 years ago and was knocked out by a state trooper, told NBC’s “Meet the Press on Sunday that what happened that day had led to lasting changes in civil rights. Prime Minister Najib Razak said on Sunday Malaysia remained committed to the search for the missing MH370 jetliner a year after it vanished without a trace, and a report by international investigators oered no new clues as to its fate. Runcible to debut in late 2015

The Runcible is the first personal device for the post-smartphone era and is modeled on an old-fashioned pocket watch. / REX USA

A company has created what they call the world’s first anti-smartphone. The Runcible is described as the first personal device for the post-smartphone era and is modeled on an oldfashioned pocket watch. The round device has a natural design reminiscent of a pebble and includes a highperformance phone and camera. But rather than being the latest do-everything gizmo, the Runcible is designed to “refocus users’ attention on real people and the real world” and is touted as being the “World’s first heirloom electronic.” “People need something to let them control their digital lives in clean, quiet, simple ways,” said Aubrey Anderson, CEO and co-founder of Berkeley, California-based Monohm Inc. “Runcible is the alternative to the increasingly invasive and commodified smartphone whose app-centric approach distracts us from our lives instead of helping us live them.” Features and benefits First-ever fully round screen and palm-sized form is modelled on devices that humans have always carried with them: the pocket watch, the compass, the magical stone that fits the

palm of our hand. Discovery-centric Features simple interfaces which focus on clean summaries of our digital lives, and a curated maps program that differs from others in finding the most interesting route to a destination, versus the fastest. Requires no additional software or apps Runcible’s operating system is based on Open Web standards. Unlike other systems which rely upon complicated middleware and cannot integrate across platforms, applications, and devices, Runcible users can simply access the power of the Web to command and control the growing number of devices around us. Planned nonobsolescence: Unlike today’s smartphones, which become entirely obsolete within two or three years, Runcible’s parts can be removed, repaired and upgraded, enabling the device to be kept for decades. No interruptions Runcible will never beep, alert or otherwise interrupt us, enabling us to keep our attention where it has always meant to be. REX USA

Runcible will be initially available in late 2015. Suggested retail price has not been confirmed but cost will be comparable to a premium, unlocked smartphone purchase. Runcible is built on

top of Mozilla’s Open Source Firefox OS, and KDDI Corporation is Monohm’s first carrier partnership. KDDI’s Design Series, an award winning line of high-end mobile devices available in Japan, will also participate in Runcible’s development and help customise Runcible for the Japanese market with Monohm. Should you take the SAT or ACT? Tips. We asked the experts to break down these important exams. So what is the difference between the SAT and the ACT? This is the most common question asked by students and parents prior to starting the headache-inducing process of applying to college. First, let’s start with the good news: There isn’t an admissions advantage submitting one test over the other, according to Devon Wible, Kaplan Test Prep’s

executive director of SAT and ACT programs. However, there are many disparities between the two exams. We asked Wible to lead us through them.

Test length and structure “The SAT is broken down into 10 sections ranging from 10 minutes all the way up to 25 minutes, and the ACT has four different tests, and those range from 30 minutes to 60 minutes,” Wible says. “So the SAT is a series of small sprints, whereas the ACT requires a little more endurance.”

Experts recommend researching both exams to find the right fit. / ISTOCK Planning

Strategy When you’re taking the current SAT, if you answered incorrectly, you lose a quarter point. It’s important to know when to leave a question blank and when to guess. “If you can eliminate one answer choice, guessing is a good thing to do,” Wible says. “On the ACT, there is no wrong answer penalty.”

Science section The ACT has a science section, which causes many students to recoil out of intimidation. “A lot of students get really nervous that they have to have a biology, chemistry or physics background, and that’s not exactly true,” Wible notes. “You don’t have to be a science expert to do well.”

Prose or not The ACT has an optional

essay. “We like to see students push themselves and take that part of the test,” Wible says. “It’s better to take it, and then you can apply to schools that require the essay.”

Change ahead The SAT, as many of you have heard/panicked about, is undergoing some serious changes in 2016. “The college board is looking to make sure that the exam is a true representation of how

students will succeed in college and career,” Wible says. “Between the SAT and ACT, we are seeing more students gravitating toward the ACT, so the SAT is pushing to make sure their test is updated to curriculum changes made in the high schools and to compete with the ACT.” The new version of the SAT will debut in March 2016. Reality TV. A college senior wows ‘Shark Tank’ with his new app Millions of viewers were introduced to the new app Scholly when founder Christopher Gray made his sales pitch before the all-star panel on the ABC reality show “Shark Tank.” Viewers were taken by both Gray’s story — raised by a single mom, he managed to earn over $1 million in scholarship money — and by the fact that the app created a heated discussion among the judges, with Mark Cuban, Kevin O’Leary and Robert Herjavec walking off of the set in anger. We emailed Gray shortly after the episode aired to get the inside story. How did you feel after hearing three of the judges had walked off? I knew about the fight for a while, but it was interesting to see it on television. I think I made the right decision and chose investors who believed in Scholly both as a business and as a venture that will

help millions of students pay for college. You’re a senior at Drexel. How did you come up with Scholly? It took me months simply to find a list of scholarships I was eligible for. Also, before I created Scholly, I spent three years consulting and helping other students to find and apply for scholarships. What’s next for you? We want to evolve into a platform that students can use to get into college and until they graduate.

Guidance

What advice do you have for students? Apply for as many scholarships as possible so funds will not be an issue. Some students can’t attend their dream school due to lack of funds, so making sure they put the same amount of effort into applying for scholarships as they do applying for school is super important. Gwyneth Paltrow wants kids to follow in her Goop footsteps

Willow and Jaden Smith offer more teen proclamations

Why does the publicist for Willow and Jaden Smith keep letting them do interviews? Scratch that, why do they have a publicist to begin with? Now Willow, 14, and Jaden, 16, are blabbing to Billboard about their music careers and evolving consciousnesses or something. But the real choice cuts come when the siblings let forth on their respective takes on fashion. Jaden,

for instance, wants “to look like Batman and Robin,” while Willow takes a more utilitarian approach. “I could literally climb a mountain and survive a couple nights in nature,” she says. “That’s a requirement for my clothes because one day I was on the freeway and I saw a mountain, so I literally just pulled over and climbed it.” Kids these days.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead joins a cult Interview. The actress talks about the deprogramming drama “Faults” and being directed by her husband. To the list of actors who’ve been directed by their significant others, add Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Smashed” star both produced and stars in the twisty “Faults,” written and directed by her husband Riley Stearns, in which she plays Claire, a young cult member being deprogrammed. Not that she wasn’t nervous, at least at first. Were you always supposed to play Claire? I was. But in the beginning, I was very nervous. There were a lot of reasons, not the least of which was it was my husband’s film, and he

wrote it for me. I was worried I couldn’t do it justice — that I wouldn’t be what he imagined with it. I wasn’t sure I was the right person for the part. It’s a tricky role, starting with how you have to seem human and brainwashed at the same time. I was so afraid of being inauthentic in some way. I didn’t want her too spacey. She does claim to have these connections to other worlds and higher powers. I wanted her to feel more

Some couples, even very close ones, find it difficult to

make films together. How was it for you two? We’d done some short films together. We’ve been together for a really long time, so we know each other really well. I don’t think there was any way we could surprise each other, like me suddenly realizing, “I didn’t know you were a tyrant on the set!” But at first it was a little weird, because we

didn’t have to say much to each other. I’m used to really talking about what the director wants. But he knows me, and I know him, so we didn’t have to say much. At first that made me nervous — like, “Are you sure I’m doing what you want?” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Winstead has made very big films — two “Die Hard”s, a “Final Destination” — but lately she’s been doing smaller independent films. “I’m just trying to find good roles,” Winstead tells us. “Lately, for the most part, those have been in the independent world. For me, it’s hard to find big movie roles. I’m not a huge name, and not to say they don’t exist, but the good roles tend to go to the same handful of people. They’re all amazing, but that does make it difficult for someone like me to get those great roles. Hopefully, eventually, one of those things will open up, and I’ll be able to do that. But I’m not going to sit around and wait for it.”

No rest for the wicked on ‘The Following’ Interview. Despite some bright spots, the team of morally compromised characters still has a heavy day job. “The Following,” Fox’s often gruesome serial killer investigation drama, gave viewers a bit of a surprise in its third season premiere. And no, we’re not talking about those new killers. We’re talking about the cheerful wedding sequence that opened the episode as FBI agent Gina Mendez wed her partner while series lead Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) and others laughed and danced. “It was shortlived, wasn’t it?” says Valerie Cruz, who plays Mendez, with a laugh. She’s speaking of the distraught man who showed up and tossed blood on the guests during the party, but Cruz says it was a fun break for the cast. “I think [co-star] Shawn Ashmore live-tweeted, ‘So weird to see everyone so happy!’ and a minute and a half later, I was tweeting him back, ‘Well, that was short-lived, so don’t worry! No reason to feel weird.’” Cruz says this season

sees its share of new villains, but don’t expect the show’s main killer, Joe Carroll, to leave. “I think the whole idea is that, as the years go on between Ryan and him, you don’t know where one ends and the other begins. They start to merge together. Ryan carries a lot of Joe Carroll in his psyche.” As to what it’s like being on a show with a high body count, Cruz reveals, “No one is safe, ever, on our show.” With that in mind, it sounds like something pretty crazy will happen in tonight’s episode. “When people watch episode two, it’ll be shocking. I think I am allowed to say that. It’ll catch you by surprise.”

Frenemies to friends

Six degrees of friendship

VALERIE CRUZ FILMMAGIC

Viewers can expect Gina and Ryan to be on slightly better ground this season. “The relationship is less adversarial, for certain, and I would say more friendshiporiented.” But Ryan can be a tough friend to have, at times. “He puts people in harm’s way or at risk because drawing the line of right and wrong and how to do things eludes him,” says Cruz. Do you ever get frustrated with how stubborn Klaus can be? Yeah, sometimes. I think, “God, if he’d just be a bit more accommodating, this would all work out fine. But I enjoy playing that stubbornness. Relief in every note Music therapy. Put away the pills and pop in your personal music playlist. What do you reach for at the end of a bad day? If you’ve got a playlist for that, you already know the power of music. But its medical benefits go beyond mood boosting. Once a marginal alternative therapy, music is now recognized as constructive in reaching patients with disorders such as autism or Alzheimer’s. The field has come a long way in the 20 years since Suzanne Hanser founded the Music Therapy Department at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Hanser specializes in pain management and just completed an experiment at Boston Medical Center’s family medicine unit, using music therapy to aid in pain management and anxiety relief with the goal of cutting the use of conventional medications, which often have negative side effects.

1

How it works: You may remember this trick from the Harry Potter books, but the first step is finding a happy memory and the music associated with it. “It might be something associated with marriage, birth or something their mother sang to them as

The right music can take you from your crazy day to somewhere more relaxing. / ISTOCK Your song

No one-sizefits-all cure “My research puts an important personal meaning to therapeutic music,” so getting to know the patient’s musical taste is the key to designing a therapy that works for them. “For some people, they get into another zone with New Age music, while others find it agitating.”

a child,” Hanser explains. Then they create a mix of those songs for the patient to play when they’re in pain, whether physical or psychological.

2

Music balances brain and body chemistry: “Not only can listening to music that’s important to you allow the release of serotonin and

dopamine, it’s also aiding release of the deeply relaxing neurochemicals, and that’s balancing the system. It gets rid of stress hormones. We’re not only bringing those positive neurochemicals, but we’re getting rid of the bad stuff. And there aren’t any side effects with music.”

3

There’s no “right” music for every mood: There’s no one kind of music to soothe the soul. Taking the recommendation of listening to a mellow track, or even nature sounds, to calm down may backfire. “If you’re really anxious, and you put on some slow music with long melodies and flowing themes, it might be so far from your emotional state that it’s not resonating with you,” says Hanser.

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

Being for women doesn’t mean being against men Re: ‘The stars of feminism are not men!’ (Metro, March 6-8) These pathetic creatures you call “male feminists” are a result of feminist propaganda. Feminist women force them to abandon all sense of manhood, make them believe that men are the most evil thing in the world, and that all what matters on this freaking planet is only what women want. The stars of feminism are not good women (for the most part). They’re diehard feminazis who have no idea what real life is

(Look at Metro’s March 2 Women’s Day article). They sit in front of a computer crapping out editorials about how evil men are, when they have no clue as to what men actually do. They do not acknowledge the good men who get up every morning and do very hard jobs, just so they can sit comfortably in their leather seats, talking garbage! You know what we need? Honest feminists who fight for the needs of women, while respecting the needs of men. Just saying. LYANE LOPEZ, VIA EMAIL

1 3 Former Jets back Johnson shot in Orlando drive-by

Chris Johnson, arguably the most dominant running back in the NFL a few years back, was shot in the shoulder during a drive-by shooting at an intersection in Orlando, Florida around 4 a.m. Sunday. Johnson is said to be in stable condition. Dreekins Oricko Johnson, the 28-year-old driver of the vehicle Johnson was in, was killed by gunfire according to reports. Johnson was one of two passengers in the vehicle. According to Sports Illustrated, a second vehicle

pulled up beside the one carrying Johnson and opened fire. Johnson had his most NFL success with the Tennessee Titans, a stint that included a 2,000yard rushing season in 2009. The East Carolina product ran for just 663 yards on 115 carries in 2014 with the Jets and New York declined to pick up his option last month. Johnson was arrested on a misdemeanor gun charge in Orlando two months ago.

The Miami Dolphins made the biggest splash of the NFL offseason thus far as they reached an agreement with defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. The deal in place is reportedly worth $114 million. The Miami Herald reported that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was “determined to land the big prize of the 2015 free agency class.” MATT BURKE

Josh Bailey, Nick Leddy and John Tavares scored the goals for New York Saturday while newly acquired goaltender Michal Neuvirth made 15 saves in his first start as an Islander.

Left wing Matt Martin returned to the team Saturday and played nine minutes, registering a minus-1, after he was suspended one game for a knee-to-knee hit on Dallas’ Trevor Daley last Tuesday. The Islanders and Rangers will meet Tuesday night at Nassau Coliseum in a key divisional game. MATT BURKE

NCAA. St. John’s hoping for some home cookin’ in Big East tourney “Flush it.” That’s the message Steve Lavin wanted his team to take away from No. 4 ranked Villanova’s 105-68 destruction of depleted St. John’s Saturday. Or in the parlance of New Yorkers, “fuhgetaboutit.’’ “Blowouts are the easiest games to get over.” said Lavin, who rested injured shot-blocker supreme Chris Obekpa along with sixth man Jamal Branch in preparation for the upcoming Big East tournament. “The hardest are the double-overtime, back-breakers where a guy hits one 30 feet off the glass or when you feel the referees determine the outcome.” Lavin knows first hand teams can bounce back from such embarrassment. “I just told the team my first year as a head

coach we lost to Stanford by 48 points,” he recalled of his UCLA days. “At Stanford they called it the ‘Maples Massacre,’ at the Maples Pavilion. We ended up coming back to win the league and then played for a chance to go to the Final Four. My second year we lost by 41 in what they call the ‘Alaska Avalanche’ to North Carolina. We came back to get

to the Sweet 16.” The trick now is picking themselves off the floor in time for Thursday’s (2:30 p.m.) Big East Tournament battle with a Providence team they’ve already beaten twice. Lavin’s confident Obekpa, with a full week’s rest since turning his ankle at Marquette, should be ready to wreak havoc in the paint. St. John’s absorbed its worst loss this past weekend since a 97-55 Duke blowout in 2002, while surrendering triple figures to the Wildcats for the first time ever. “It’s championship week now; a one game elimination at Madison Square Garden. We’re going to be prepared.” said Phil Greene IV, who scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half Saturday. JON MARKS
