Graphic testimony continued Monday in the trial of admitted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who sat impassively as the survivors of the attack recounted scenes of bloody horror. Jessica Kensky was the first witness to take the stand Monday as the trial entered its third day of testimony. Kensky was with her husband, Patrick Downes, when the twin blasts rocked through Boylston Street on April 15, 2013, catapulting her “like a rocket.” “There was smoke, there
was blood. I was most focused on my husband, he was right next to me still, and his foot and his leg were kind of detached,” said Kensky. Tsarnaev is on trial for his life in the deadly attack that killed Martin Richard, 8; restaurant manager Krystle Campbell, 29, and graduate student Lingzi Lu, 23, and injured 264. He is also on trial for the fatal shooting of an MIT police officer three days later. One of his defense attorneys last week admitted Tsarnaev and his late brother did indeed carry out the attack, though the 21-year-old has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Kensky lost her left leg on the day of the bombing. Doctors amputated her right leg this past January.

“A man came over as I was trying to fumble to put a tourniquet on Patrick and said, ‘Ma’am you’re on fire, you’re on fire.’” Kensky
During her testimony, prosecutors showed the court surveillance images taken near the blast sites. Tsarnaev was seen walking with a backpack that prosecutors say held a homemade pressure cooker bomb. He is seen dropping it in a crowded area in front of Forum restaurant, making a phone call and walking away shortly before the blast.
Jurors also saw a graphic photo of bombing survivor Jeff Bauman consciously lying in a pool of blood, with the lower portion of his legs missing. A friend of Lu’s, fellow Chinese exchange student, Dan Ling Zhou, 24, held back tears as best she could while recounting her last moments with her friend. The pair was in front of Forum when the first blast rang out down the street. Zhou said she didn’t believe the blast was from a bomb, though Lu was panicked. “[Lu] was scared. She was scared like everyone else around,” said Zhou, dabbing away tears. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Investigation. Boston English dean faces review after shooting arrest
Shaun Harrison is charged with shooting a teenager. / BOSTON GLOBE
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is launching an internal review of the employment history of the Boston high school dean accused of shooting a teenager in the head over a drug dispute last week. The Boston Public Schools Department of Labor Relations
will carry out the inquiry, which will include interviews with school leaders and other staff members at the schools where Harrison was employed. Shaun Harrison, a 55-yearold Roxbury reverend, was most recently a dean of students at Jamaica Plain’s Boston
English High School. He was fired after the allegations of the shooting came to light last week. A recent search of Harrison’s home yielded marijuana, cocaine and several guns. Police also reported he had a gang mural in his apartment. DANNY MCDONALD
Mayor Marty Walsh feels City Hall’s front yard is lacking energy, and he wants Bostonians to weigh in on how to liven it up. Walsh said on Monday he was seeking input from residents on how to “unlock the potential” of the notable civic space. Residents can submit ideas through CityofBoston. gov, or by tweeting @Marty_Walsh and @NotifyBoston using #CityHallPlaza. “This is the people’s plaza, and we’ve seen how it can bring the city together for international events and community events alike,” Walsh said. BPD recover Acura stolen with a 4-year-old inside Boston Police have confirmed they have recovered a car that was stolen with a four-year-old boy inside it Sunday in East Boston. Police say a silver Acura was taken from a parking spot near a Bank of America ATM located close to the corner of Bennington and Porter streets in Eastie around 9:40 a.m. Sunday. The driver of the car was using the ATM, while the boy was left in the car. The alleged thief — 50-year-old Ronald Smoot — dropped the child off at a Mobil station on Meridian Street shortly after he stole the car. The car was recovered on Putnam Street this morning, according to Boston Police, just 8 a.m. Smoot has been arrested in connection with the crime and could be arraigned Tuesday. METRO

Rock salt poses danger for dogs Pet danger. Unsuspecting pooches are falling ill after eating the dangerous winter mixture. Local vets say dog owners should be worrying about more than just snow and ice this winter. Road salt, says Dr. Edward Schettino, director of veterinary medical services at the Animal Rescue League of Boston, says road salt can pose both internal and external dangers to canines. “It can cause painful burning and cracking of the pads from walking on salt-treated roads and sidewalks,” he said. Ingesting road salt can also pose problems. This often happens if dogs’ feet are not washed off after coming in from a walk, said Schettino. He advised owners to have their dogs wear boots or to wash their feet off before entering
the house. Eating the substance can cause seizures and brain irregularities, he said. Lesser doses can cause vomiting or diarrhea. If a dog appears to have a painful mouth and is not eating, Schettino advises checking with your vet to determine the next step. Dr. Kiko Bracker, an emergency and critical care vet for MSPCA-Angell (Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said usually the problem of salt irritating a dog’s feet pads is gone quickly. “But if they’re chronically in the snow and slush where there’s rock salt, you could get a drying of the foot pads, which leads to cracking and ulceration,” he said. Ingestion can cause serious irritations and inflammation in the mouth and digestive system, as well as possibly cause an electrolyte imbalance,” she said.

Jones, 32, and Marie Sue Shelley, 28, were arrested following a threemonth investigation into “quality of life concerns in their neighborhood.” Police noticed increased traffic to and from the couple’s home and received several tips about suspicious activity. Police set up an undercover sting, where an officer replied to an ad Shelley had posted on Craigslist. They met, according to authorities, and Shelley offered to perform a sexual act on the undercover state trooper for $100. There were 200 people on board the train — The Carolinian — which runs daily and was to make stops in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Delaware, Trenton, and New York’s Penn Station. “There was a massive jerk and we were kind of thrown forward a little bit, and the train came to a sudden stop,” Charlotte Story, a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who was in the seventh car, told local CBS affiliate WRAL. A passenger making the 10hour trip north to New York City, 21-year-old Patrick Narmi, said the conductor slammed on the brakes moment before the accident and he watched out the window what happened next. “A few seconds later, I heard the impact. … The train ran right through it,” he told the Raleigh News & Observer. Another street-level train crossing — and another frightening train accident. Except this time no one died. The engine of a New York City-bound Amtrak train toppled over, derailing two passenger cars in Halifax, North Carolina, Monday after slamming into a tractor-trailer that several witnesses say appeared to have gotten stuck on the tracks of a grade crossing. “Oh, my God! Oh, my God!” a woman who caught the moment of impact is heard screaming from her car in a video posted on Twitter and YouTube. From our all-laser, bladeless LASIK procedure – to exciting developments like our Visian Implantable lens - our commitment to leading edge technology is surpassed only by our dedication to personalized patient care. Patients of New England Eye Center find confidence in knowing we offer experience you can trust and technology you can rely on. NASA-Approved LASIK - Our all-laser, bladeless LASIK at New England Eye Center has greatly improved results and helped take the fear out of having LASIK. The vast majority of our LASIK and PRK patients now achieve 20/20 vision at distance without glasses or contact lenses. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots. Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lens-like device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time. Refractive Lens Exchange - If you’re frustrated with reading glasses and bifocals, our refractive specialists perform a procedure known as Refractive Lens Exchange. By replacing your eye’s aging natural lens with a Intraocular Lens Implant customized specifically for your visual needs - and your lifestyle - allowing you to see better, look younger and never have to worry about developing cataracts! Laser Cataract Surgery - For seniors experiencing changes in their vision – or who have been diagnosed with a cataract – New England Eye Center is turning the dream of Laser Cataract Surgery into reality. We are currently among only the top 3% of practices in the country to offer patients the added precision and accuracy of Laser Cataract Surgery using OptiMedica® Catalys™ Precision Laser System. crossing in the Westchester hamlet of Valhalla. The electrified third rail pierced the first car, killing six people, including five men and the woman driving the SUV. Regulators and rail advocates have, for years, called for better safety at grade crossings, where the only thing between cars and a barreling train is a stick wood crossing gate. After the Metro-North tragedy, Sens. Charles Schumer of New York and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, called for
increased funding to upgrade safety at accident-prone crossings. In 2013 alone, 200 people died at similar crossings. “It is critical that the federal government do more to make engineering upgrades at accident-prone crossings, boost public awareness of the dangers at such crossings, and improve reporting of dangerous problems at crossings,” Schumer said. Their Highway-Rail Grade Crossing Safety Act of 2015 would boost funding for the
Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), states and municipalities to make engineering and safety upgrades, like installing new lights and signals. The FRA said Monday it will probe the Amtrak collision and the National Transportation Safety Board said it was monitoring developments. Amtrak officials plan their own investigation. The train hit the midsection of the tractor-trailer, which one local Halifax woman said was going back and forth trying to maneuver a turn from U.S. Route 301 onto a more narrow two-lane road. More Lindsay Lohan legal trouble
CULTURE
There’s always something to keep Lindsay Lohan’s lawyers busy, and if it’s not suspicious community service hours claims it’s angry former business partners. Fima Potik previously sued Lohan and her younger brother for $60 million for allegedly stealing an idea for a mobile app that lets users see inside celebrities’ closets. He didn’t get the huge payout, but he did get a restraining order against the Lohans stopping them from launching their version of the app. Now he’s suing them because they have so irreparably harmed his business that he can’t even afford that restraining order, according to Radar Online. Lohan’s attorney calls the claims “surprising, disturbing and prejudicial.” I guess we can just add him to the long list of people who wish they’d never met Lohan.

Taylor Swift got to give one of her patented “aw shucks” looks of surprise when she looked into insuring her legs — as you do — only to learn they’re worth $40 million, according to the National Enquirer. “She thought her legs were possibly worth a million. But $40 million shocked her. She’s even a little embarrassed about it,” a source says. “It seems like a ludicrous sum, but if something was to happen to her legs, Taylor wouldn’t be able to give her signature stage performances. Her $200 million career would be in big trouble.” It’s with that thinking that Swift is reportedly going forward, embarrassment be damned. “She wants it all sorted out before her world tour starts in May,” the source adds.

If the baby is facing in with a cover, it’ll help protect them from yucky subway grime. “The Ergo 360 is probably the best,” Manz says. “It’s good for your back, you don’t really feel that much weight, and you won’t feel crippled after you’re running around town.”

Hacks. Stoller in the City blogger Brianne Manz shares her tips. If there’s one thing city moms must quickly master, it’s the art of shuffling around with a baby - let alone two! Getting the kiddies around town with ease actually isn’t all that hard once
you know the insider tricks, mommy blogger Brianne Manz of Stroller in the City tells us. We got her tips on her favorite gear for taking the headache out of commuting with kids.
Consider a scooter or stroller board
a toddler, using a wearable may literally become a pain in the neck. For Manz, investing in a mini-scooter for her older child was a lifesaver. “The Mini Kick is great for getting your toddler around town because they can scoot along a little faster if you’re by yourself with them,” she says. “If you have another child in the stroller, they can
While a large, fancy-pants stroller is amazing for everyday use (especially grocery shopping), it can be a nightmare on the subway as these giant, sturdy contraptions rarely fold up easily. Instead, keep a collapsible stroller on hand. “My favorite is a lightweight umbrella-type stroller, like the UPPAbaby G-Luxe,” says Manz. “It’s great because it’s light enough that you can actually carry your kid in it up and down the stairs of the subway if it doesn’t have an elevator.” The Baby Jogger City Mini is also a sturdy choice that folds up in two seconds flat.
also ride next to you on the scooter.” It’s when you have to move more than one child that commuting in the city gets a little tricky; double strollers aren’t the easiest to lug on and off a packed subway train. Instead, try putting the littlest one in a single stroller while the oldest scoots along on an

‘The Sneetches’
Be proud of who you are. If the sneetches taught us one thing, it was the importance of not conforming. The story follows a clan of imaginary creatures all striving to raise their social status. While star-bellied sneetches live the good life filled with frankfurter roasts and marshmallow toasts, those with no stars go without. But the social dynamic is flipped on its head with the invention of a machine that can stamp any old nobody with a star on their belly, thus diminishing its value. At its heart, this story is about celebrating c the t things tthat make yyou differe ent, instead o of stifling tthem to fit iin with everybody else.

Life lessons learned from Dr. Seuss
These bedtime story standbys are full of wise, rhyming words.
Dr. Seuss lovers are abuzz this week for a number of reasons. Not only did we recently celebrate his 111th birthday, we also learned of a new Seuss story that hits bookstores this summer. Dr. Seuss (real name Theodor Seuss Geisel) was a genius when it came to hiding profound messages just under the surface of whimsical rhymes, made-up words and dazzling illustrations. According to Dr. Seuss himself, nonsense is a necessary ingredient in life that allows you to see “through the wrong end of a telescope.”
“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells,” he famously said. “Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.” In the spirit of nonsense, here’s a list of three valuable life lessons gleaned from our favorite Dr. Seuss books. MH
‘Oh, The Places You’ll Go!’
Trust life to take you where you’re meant to go. There’s a reason this Seuss classic is a go-to gift for grads. This not-so-subtle tale of what awaits all of us in the adult world couldn’t be more spot on. The narrator warns that while most of us come out of the gate optimistic and determined, it’s only a matter of time before we encounter “bang-ups and hang-ups.” The powerful message here is to get back up, and to have ha faith in where life is taking you. W When uncerta tain things ha happen (as th they inevita tably will) yyou needn’t w worry. “Just g go right a along. You’ll sstart happ pening too.”
MARIANNE HAYES @MetroBOS letter@metro.us
‘The Lorax’
Take care of the earth. “The Lorax” is perhaps the most obviously relevant Dr. Seuss book of our time. The story is a cautionary tale of the terrible things that happen when the environment is stripped of its natural resources. In the case of “The Lorax,” it’s those luscious and rare truffula trees that bring out the greedy, moneyhungry folks. It doesn’t take a genius to see the parallels between today’s world and the questionable, destructive lengths the book’s antagonist goes to in order to cash in on these trees. The glaring, overarching moral of the st story is more o of a question th than anything e else: What will h happen when tthat resource e eventually runs d dry? And how w will the world recover from the damage?

Women won’t be taken seriously until they take themselves seriously
Graffiti taggers and Donald Trump have something in common
men or women, encourage women to stereotype themselves. For example: One fairly recent incident which was said to be “anti-woman” occurred when a company sent out a memo to its female workers telling them NOT to wear short skirts. Women will always be second-class citizens since being “feminine” (which actually means being trashy or flirty or seductive) is their priority rather than having a more male sense of selfseriousness.
Re: ‘Being for women doesn’t mean being against men’ (Metro, March 9) No it doesn’t. That is a distracting point. The issue is soft sexism in which so-called “feminists,”
I think the posters reminding people to stand clear of the OPENING doors (and other etiquette) actually help. But couldn’t they make posters all around town that remind the people who do lame graffiti tagging that only losers with low self-esteem do tagging? If we make that point enough,
LUCY MARTINEZ, VIA EMAIL
no one will want to tag their names, because they’ll be ashamed, now that everyone sees thru their childish desire to have their name everywhere. They’re like a ghetto Donald Trump! I’m so fed up with this crappy tagging and the immature motives of those who do it. Is anyone in charge? SHAUNA ERLBAUM, VIA EMAIL

Free agency frenzy underway NFL. Big names are finding new landing spots as free agency opens Tuesday.
SPORTS
NFL
Christmas comes early for a number of teams under the increased salary cap of $143 million. Tuesday begins the NFL’s free-agent frenzy, and with as many as seven teams (Eagles, Jets, Titans, Browns, Raiders, and Jaguars) enjoying as much as $44 million in cap space, the 4 p.m. commencement should be fun to watch. The Jags lead the way with a whopping $68.47 million under the raised cap, but that doesn’t mean every A-plus star will flock to Florida, as a contender like the Eagles ($44.766 million) will also have the ability to steal away a few big names. Here’s a look at four of the most sought-after targets during the whirlwind:
TONY WILLIAMS and MATT BURKE
Browner can flirt with other clubs The Patriots have allowed cornerback Brandon Browner to “explore his value with other NFL teams,” according to the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe. Browner will earn a $2 million roster bonus if he’s on the team at the start of the 2015 league year, which just happens to be Tuesday at 4 p.m. It’s possible that the Patriots could restructure Browner’s current three-year pact that has a max value of $16.8 million. The news of the Patriots allowing Browner to flirt with other clubs came several hours after the team agreed to terms with safety Devin McCourty. McCourty’s deal is reportedly worth $47 million over five years. McCourty was ready to leave the Patriots for more money, and he even called Bill Belichick to thank him for “five great years” in New England. But the Pats came back with one final mega-offer to keep McCourty in Foxboro.

Source: Jets won’t overspend to bring Revis back to NY Darelle Revis could be headed back to the New York Jets, but the team isn’t prepared to “break open the piggy bank for him,” said one source close to the situation. Arguably the biggest name left on the free agent market, Revis is the lockdown cornerback that the Jets crave for new head coach Todd Bowles’ blitzheavy scheme. And it doesn’t hurt that Revis, traded by the Jets in 2013, is a legend despite his frequent contract holdouts and general air of discontent. But while his parting from New
Darrelle Revis, CB The Patriots declined to pick up Revis’ $20 million option Monday, which was expected. But New England must move fast to re-sign the man who changed the face of their championship defense in 2014. Revis is every bit the impact player that’s advertised as during his only year in New England, he helped hold opposing quarterbacks to a passer rating of just 74.7 and helped the defense match the excellence of their offensive brethren. Cornerbacks the caliber of Revis rarely hit the open market, so

The Cowboys chose to place the franchise tag on wideout Dez Bryant instead of arguably the league’s best running back, but don’t cry poverty for Murray, who will most definitely cash in somewhere — whether it be Dallas or someplace else. Many thought the star back would head back to Dallas after it seemed like the running back market would dry up even before it started, but then the Bills threw a wrench into that thinking when they traded for LeSean McCoy and then reportedly offered a five-year extension that included $26.5
he’ll definitely receive his fair share of calls. One of those will undoubtedly be from the New York Jets, who have been hot for Revis for a while now. Metro’s Kristian Dyer reported, however, that the Jets “wouldn’t break the piggy bank” to bring Revis back. A high-ranking source did say, however, that the Jets’ interest is strong in the All-Pro corner. Landing spots: Patriots, Jets, Bills

Greg Hardy is the ultimate gamble, as his legal issues — he missed 15 games in 2014 as he appealed a ruling that said he assaulted his ex-girlfriend — should force teams to stay away. When on the field, he is terrific as he racked up 15 sacks in 2013. Landing spots: Colts, Bengals Manic Monday

York two years ago was less than harmonious via a trade to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Revis is “open and willing to consider a return to the Jets.” “Darrelle would be open to the Jets. He never wanted to leave. And the team is planning accordingly,” the source said. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity because he is not allowed to comment publicly on contract talks. “But while a reunion is possible, don’t expect [the Jets] to overpay,” the source said. “Revis has value on and off the field; he’s a perfect fit for this defense. But he’s 29 [years old] and while still an impact player, is he ‘Revis Island’? He’s
A lot went down in the NFL world Monday: •
The Texans flat-out released wide receiver Andre Johnson, making him a free agent. Johnson had been with the Texans for 12 years.
•
Houston also made headlines by making the decision to re-sign QB Ryan Mallett. The team is also prepared to acquire fellow former Patriots backup, Brian Hoyer.
•
49ers linebacker Patrick Willis will reportedly retire.
still close to that, don’t get me wrong. He will get paid like a top corner but this won’t be a bidding war. “They will be disciplined but they won’t be trigger shy. He will be among the top-paid defensive players in the league but [the Jets] won’t break open the piggy back for him.” As a lockdown corner, Revis would take the pressure off of safety Calvin Pryor, set to enter his second year in the league after some ups and downs a season ago. “The interest is strong in Revis,” the source said of the Jets. “If he can be brought back at market value without overspending, they will do it.” KRISTIAN DYER

Finally, a shakeup at the top of the rankings! The Ducks have one more point (91) than the Canadiens, but Montreal has played one less game and their goal-differential (plus-31) is far superior to Anaheim’s. After Nashville’s Pekka Rinne missed so much time, Carey Price is a lock for the Vezina Trophy.

Penguins (36-17-9)
The Ducks have the most points in the NHL and are competing in the Western Conference. That still carries plenty of weight.
I am not abandoning the Preds, but I have to admit that it has been a tough couple weeks. Nashville has dropped its last six.
At 6-3-1 in their last 10 games, the Penguins are making a move. Their goal-differential is plus-28 thanks to only 160 goals allowed this season.

Just like they have been all season, the Lightning are right next to the Canadiens. Tampa Bay is 7-3-0 in its last 10 games and it has won its last three.
The Blues are currently the third seed in the Western Confernce. They’re 5-4-1 in their last 10, but a 6-1 win over Toronto righted things.
A game like their 1-0 loss to the Rangers on Sunday shows the immeasurable value of Patrick Kane (27 goals, 37 assists) and how much the Blackhawks truly miss him when he’s out. Chicago has 16 more regular season games to figure out how it can survive without Kane.
