Relics of Boston’s colonial past — including a George Washington medal and silver plaque believed to have been engraved by Paul Revere — were laid out publicly for the first time Wednesday surrounded by portraits of the founding fathers who sealed them up more than two centuries ago. The Museum of Fine Arts exhibition is called “Inside the Box and it offers history buffs the rare opportunity to

see, under glass, what was recently found in the Massachusetts State House time capsule. The tiny brass box was painstakingly chiseled from the building’s cornerstone in December, and opened in January. “Having it be here at the MFA is wonderful for us,” said exhibition curator Nonie Gadsden. “Since it was opened here in this very room people have been asking, ‘Can we see it?’ It got to the point where we had to put a sign up on the front door saying, ‘The time capsule will be on view [in March].” The exhibition features 35 objects, including coins, a medal depicting Washington and the Revere plaque. Newspapers from the time period, which have been remarkably preserved, are also on view.

Digging up history On Dec. 11, after seven hours of excavation, the time capsule was removed from the plaster encasement within the cornerstone of the Massachusetts State House. It was immediately transported to the MFA, where it was X-rayed. Archivists opened the capsule on Jan. 6.

Gov. Samuel Adams, Revere and Colonel William Scollay placed the time capsule in the cornerstone in 1795. The capsule is on display in the Art of the America’s Wing in the Museum’s Kristin and Roger Servison Gallery, surrounded by massive portraits of those very men. The capsule was unearthed

in 1855 so the objects could be documented and cleaned. Additional objects were also added at that time. “These things are cool. This is what historians live for” said Massachusetts Archives Executive Director Michael Comeau. “Circumstances like these shine a spotlight on certain pieces of history. It certainly piques people’s curiosity, and makes them want to learn about the greater whole. Anything that attracts attention and visibility for our cultural heritage is a great thing.” The objects will be on display at the museum through April 22. It will be reburied in June. “I think it’s awesome that they’d put these objects in the box for us to look at hundreds of years later. … The coins are very awesome to look at. The actual brass box is interesting, and the newspapers. The next capsule should have photographs of typical Bostonians.” Lynn Westenberger, 49, Amherst

“It’s terribly moving, actually. I mean to think that I’m this close to things that were touched by Sam Adams and Paul Revere is very moving to me. History always seems so far away. Here it’s so close. The fact that we could be able to reach out and touch it is very beautiful.” Robert Zisa, 78, Winthrop

MBTA. Riders to get free day on MBTA in April, passholder discounts in May

Commuters pass through turnstiles at Park Street Station. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO

Public transit riders will see free access to the MBTA and the commuter rail for one day, while corporate and other passholders will see a 15 percent discount for one month, under a $5 million plan that state officials approved Wednesday. The plan seeks to make amends for a stretch of poor performance on the MBTA

and the commuter rail as the public transit system endured a battery of winter storms. The fare-free day will be Friday, April 24, according to an MBTA spokesman. The 15 percent discount is expected to take place during the month of May. The combination of a free day and a one-month discount is “reasonable,” said Trans-

portation Secretary Stephanie Pollack. Interim T general manager Frank DePaola said the agency can handle the $5 million hit. Gov. Charlie Baker, who said he encouraged the MBTA to consider rebates, reiterated his support in principle Wednesday before knowing the outcome of the board vote. SHNS

Another charge for court officer accused of rape Lawrence. A guard charged with raping an inmate is now accused of trying to cover his tracks.

The Lawrence court officer who authorities allege raped a shackled female inmate three times in a courthouse is facing new allegations he intimidated a witness and tried to have evidence destroyed. Jose Martinez, 46, of 21 Amherst Street, was back in court Wednesday to be arraigned on a witness intimidation charge. Police arrested him without incident at his home Tuesday night. Authorities allege he tried to destroy evidence sought by police in the open case against

him. Tampering with evidence falls under the witness intimidation statute, according to the Essex County district attorney’s office. Prosecutors allege Martinez called a former colleague of his at the courthouse and asked that he locate a cellphone in the building and destroy it because it potentially had incriminating photos and messages on it. The court officer found the cellphone behind a judge’s courtroom bench, but handed it over to authorities. Martinez was released a week ago on $40,000 bail following his arraignment on rape and indecent assault and battery charges. Prosecutors allege Martinez raped the victim when she was appearing in Lawrence District Court in July 2009 and in September and October of last year. The DA’s office said the vic-

In fact, Natalie has an uncanny ability to confuse my daffodils with dandelions. But she works hard and, I have to say, she’s grown on me. Fatalities. The accident could be among the deadliest domestic military training accidents in years. Seven Marines and four soldiers were presumed dead after an Army Black Hawk helicopter crashed on a nighttime training mission off the Florida coast, where U.S. military officials were still conducting a search-and-rescue operation on Wednesday afternoon. Some human remains had washed ashore, said a spokeswoman for Eglin Air Force Base in north Florida. Officials did not immediately release information on what caused the crash involving the Marines and four members of the Louisiana National Guard. Heavy fog was reported around the time the helicopter was reported missing around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Fog hampered the search effort on Wednesday. One of two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters participating in the routine exercise crashed near the base 50 miles east of Pensacola, and rescue workers discovered debris about 2 a.m. on Wednesday, the base said in a statement. The other helicopter “started to take off and then realized, I guess, that the weather was a condition and turned

In February 2012, seven Marines were killed when two helicopters collided during a nighttime training exercise along the California-Arizona border.

The following year, another seven Marines died in an explosion at a Nevada munitions depot, after a mortar round detonated prematurely during a livefire training exercise. Eight other service members were injured in that incident.

The latest incident occurred near an Air Force base spanning nearly 500,000 acres in the Florida Panhandle that is used extensively for training.

The Marines were part of a special operations unit from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The four crew members and the helicopter were part of the Louisiana National Guard, assigned to an Army unit based in Hammond, Louisiana. All four were married men with children, Curtis said.

They were part of a highly experienced helicopter battalion, Curtis said, noting the two pilots were instructors and had “several thousand hours” of flying experience with their crew. President Barack Obama phoned military officials to express condolences, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters, noting the president anticipated a detailed investigation. The helicopter that crashed had a flight data recorder that will be part of the investigation, a Louisiana guard official said. REUTERS

Five things you need to know

Kerry tells Republicans: You cannot modify IranU.S. nuclear deal

Secretary of State John Kerry told Republicans who control Congress on Wednesday they would not be able to modify any nuclear agreement struck between the United States and Iran. Kerry said he responded with “utter disbelief” to an open letter to Iran on Monday signed only by Republican senators that said any deal would only last as long as U.S. President Barack Obama, a Democrat, remains in office. “When it says that Congress could actually modify the terms of an agreement at any time is flat wrong,” Kerry, who has been negotiating a deal to rein in Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for

easing sanctions, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “You don’t have the right to modify an agreement reached executive to executive between leaders of a country.” But Sen. Rand Paul, a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2016, told Kerry that any deal would need approval by Congress if it affected U.S. sanctions against Iran. Paul accused the Obama administration of trying to bypass Congress. “The letter was to Iran, but it should’ve been cc’d to the White House because the White House needs to understand that any agreement that removes or changes legislation will have to be passed by us,” Paul said. Oregon city considers penalizing growers for smelly pot

The Oregon city of Medford, where officials say residents have long grumbled about the odor of marijuana growing operations, is considering a regulation that would fine pot growers if their marijuana is too smelly, city officials said on Wednesday. The city’s legal staff has drafted an ordinance that would fine both medical and recreational marijuana growers whose operations are too malodorous up to $250 a day and would give the city power to seize plants if growers don’t come into compliance. Facebook to face lawsuit over children’s online purchase

A leading Republican critic of Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday he wants the former secretary of state to testify about her controversial use of personal email for government work by April, timing that could coincide with her expected launch of a 2016 presidential campaign. “I would like to have it done by April,” Rep. Trey Gowdy, a South Carolina Republican who chairs a congressional committee investigating the 2012 attacks on a U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya, said on Wednesday.

A federal judge said Facebook Inc. must face a nationwide class-action lawsuit seeking to force the social media company to provide refunds when children spend their parents’ money on its website without permission. U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman in San Jose, California on Tuesday said a class of plaintiffs estimated in the hundreds of thousands may press their claim that Facebook should change how it handles online transactions by minors. The police chief of Ferguson, Missouri, resigned on Wednesday, following a scathing Justice Department report that found widespread abuses in the city’s policing and courts, sources with knowledge of the matter said. Chief Thomas Jackson is the latest in a string of departures since the findings of the Justice Department probe were announced on March 4. Protesters have called for his removal since the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teen last summer, which led to the Justice Department report that found widespread racially biased practices in his department. From our all-laser, bladeless LASIK procedure – to exciting developments like our Visian Implantable lens - our commitment to leading edge technology is surpassed only by our dedication to personalized patient care. Patients of New England Eye Center find confidence in knowing we offer experience you can trust and technology you can rely on. NASA-Approved LASIK - Our all-laser, bladeless LASIK at New England Eye Center has greatly improved results and helped take the fear out of having LASIK. The vast majority of our LASIK and PRK patients now achieve 20/20 vision at distance without glasses or contact lenses. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots. Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lens-like device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time. Refractive Lens Exchange - If you’re frustrated with reading glasses and bifocals, our refractive specialists perform a procedure known as Refractive Lens Exchange. By replacing your eye’s aging natural lens with a Intraocular Lens Implant customized specifically for your visual needs - and your lifestyle - allowing you to see better, look younger and never have to worry about developing cataracts! Laser Cataract Surgery - For seniors experiencing changes in their vision – or who have been diagnosed with a cataract – New England Eye Center is turning the dream of Laser Cataract Surgery into reality. We are currently among only the top 3% of practices in the country to offer patients the added precision and accuracy of Laser Cataract Surgery using OptiMedica® Catalys™ Precision Laser System. This year, take your vision to the NEXT LEVEL by giving yourself or a loved one the Gift of Sight. Now that’s a Gift that keeps on Giving. A blessed New Year from the surgeons and staff of New England Eye Center.

Not here, please. High-tech paint gives urinating revelers their own soaking People living in Hamburg’s St. Pauli’s nightclub district are used to hordes of drunken tourists, crime and prostitution, but many are fed up with late-night revelers who urinate on public and private buildings. A local interest group has now applied a special waterrepellent paint, also used in shipbuilding, on two especially frequented buildings in the renowned nightclub district near the port to deter “Wildpinkler,” as Germans call them. Ultra-Ever Dry superhydrophobic was developed by automakers Nissan. Its oleophobic nano-coating is water repellent, meaning that those revelers who urinate against it will end up soaking themselves. “Wild peeing has been a problem here for a long time. But in recent years, it got worse,” Julia Staron, who organized the group, told Reuters. “Next week, we are also

After 12-hour outage, Apple reopens iTunes, App store An outage that shut down Apple’s iTunes, iBooks and App Store started at 5 a.m. Wednesday and wasn’t fixed for nearly 12 hours. The global shutdown made it impossible for iPhone and iPad users to connect to the company’s services. Almost all day, Apple’s system status page showed four of its dozens of services down — but they were the big ones: iTunes, iBooks, App Store, and Mac App store. Apple blamed the problem “on an internal error affecting the system for directing online traffic.” The outage comes just two days after the company unveiled the Apple Watch. Many users took to social media and wondered whether the company is about to announce a credit card breach. There was no indication that that is the case. JOHN OSWALD. METRO

Mindy Kaling can’t do one-night stands

THE SECRET TO MARK DUPLASS’ SUCCESS IS NOT BEING A JERK. GETTY IMAGES

Mark Duplass is getting quite a platform this year at SXSW, where he’ll be one of the keynote speakers — and he’s not going to waste the opportunity. A longtime SXSW vet, Duplass — who also has four films in the fest he produced, including “Manson Family Vacation,” “The Overnight,”

“6 Years” and “Adult Beginners” — has some advice for young filmmakers. But the most important thing? Be nice. You’re no stranger to SXSW. How is this year different? This is the first year where I’ll be staying at a hotel and not sleeping on some weird Airbnb couch three miles away from downtown. Do you know how your keynote will go? I’m working it out in my head, but I’ve realized that I enjoy proselytizing about the way I’ve made things. I find that my career trajectory just happens to be the one that most closely

How do you find young filmmakers? A lot of it is pretty gut-oriented, to be honest. There’s a little bit of a profile of that person between the ages of 25 and 32 who’s made a short or two, or maybe hasn’t made a movie but has written a book. You would think by the success rate that I’ve had that it’s a more vetted process than it is, but usually it’s a meeting or two, and “I love this person.”

approximates a practical path to success for someone who is coming from nowhere — no connections, nothing — and most of the people who need help are nowhere. The last thing you need to hear right now is, “Anybody can make a movie, just pick up a camera and go.” We’ve been saying this for 20 years. Let’s get more specific. What was your secret? I didn’t know how to break into this industry other than just to keep making stuff from the outside and hope to make some sort of lateral move in, and that ended up happening through Sundance. As

I’ve been looking back over the last 12 years, I’ve realized something really cool has happened that I didn’t plan on. All false modesty aside, I work in this town because I am a nice and supportive person to everyone around me, and people constantly want to give me jobs because they want to be around that kind of energy. I’m finding myself in this weird place where I have more opportunities than I ever dreamed of. The s— I’ve had to turn down this year, you would not believe. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

Machu Picchu

If you’ve never been on a ship before, it may seem like a whole new world of travel. Here are some tips to help you feel more comfortable. Different cruise lines serve different types of passengers. Research a line fully before committing.

2

Be aware that those cool new features you’ve read about — the bumper cars, skydiving simulators and restaurants run by celebrity chefs — are likely only on the newest ships in the fleet, so be sure to check what ship you’ll be traveling on before plunking down your cash.

3

The largest ships can have more than 30 cabin categories, so invest some time in determining what you get at the various price points.

4

If your chosen line offers a choice of routes, take the time to research which ports are smaller, get the fewest cruise ships and have the best beaches.

5

Extras like massage appointments, shore excursions and peak-time dinner reservations can get fully booked, so put your name down early. INSIGHT GUIDES | SHERRI EISENBERG

Five incredible sights in Peru From Pacific beaches to coastal deserts, and from the Andes Mountains and ancient Inca sites to thick rainforests, Peru is a hugely diverse country. Here are just five of its most not-tobe-missed sights.

Machu Picchu Still the biggest draw in Peru, and one of the wonders of the world, the Inca city of Machu Picchu should be top of everyone’s must-see list. It stands 7,970 feet high in the Andes, above the Sacred Valley of the Incas, and its origins are still debated. Reconstruction of many of its buildings gives a glimpse into what it must have looked like when it was built over 500 years ago.

Why did you decide to collaborate with Mother? Mother approached me with this project, and after I met the team, I knew it was the perfect partnership because I could not only try my hand at designing my own line and learn what it takes but also help a great cause at the same time. How were you involved in the creative process? They gave me complete freedom to make the denim I love. I chose everything from

I love to wear it with a simple white button-down. What kind of girl did you have in mind when you created the collection? LOGAN LEVKOFF PROVIDED

Relationships. Logan Levkoff of ‘Married at First Sight’ keeps it real. Relationship expert and sexologist Dr. Logan Levkoff serves as an expert on the reality show “Married at First Sight” on FYI. The show sends two strangers down the aisle and follows them as they try to keep their marriage afloat; two of the three couples from the first season are still married more than one year later. Levkoff talked to us about one major issue she thinks is

inhibiting healthy relationships: unrealistic expectations of sex and bodies. You say that people today have unrealistic expectations of sex and physical appearance. In general, we have these really glamorous expectations of what is sexy and what sex looks like. Magazines gloss over the awkward, real moments as opposed to the sort of airbrushed moments. Even the idea that there are great new sex positions is problematic — we’ve created this hierarchy of what it means to be good at sex. It’s the reason why we’re so unsuccess-

ful in our relationships and pursuit of relationships; our expectations are grounded in fantasy. So what should be done to remedy the problem? I think the first thing to remember is there’s no such thing as being good at sex or anything sexual. I think the best partners are those that ask good questions and listen to us and take our cues and create an environment in which both people’s pleasure is maximized. ANDREA PARK @andreapark andrea.park@metro.us

One expert says the reason we have unrealistic concepts of love is because of popular culture.

Dating apps

How do you think online dating has contributed to this perception of idealized sex? I think we should use every option available to us to love and sex if that’s what we want. If you want a connection, then why close down avenues avail-

able to you? The flip side of that is that the culture of these apps is that there are these giant pools you swipe through really fast, and I think two things happen — we’re sort of looking at someone’s picture and deciding whether or not something works for us, and maybe it’s not

really something we’re used to in terms of physical type. We’re quick to run when an obstacle comes up because it’s easy to run instead of thinking about what’s worth working through and what are bigger dealbreaker issues. Relationships aren’t meant to be easy.

It may seem like Australian band Sheppard came out of nowhere with their massive hit “Geronimo” (the song has been in the Top 20 in over 20 countries and has been streamed over 85 million times on Spotify), but in actuality, it’s been quite a long haul. “We wrote ‘Geronimo’ a year and a half ago now,” band member George Sheppard tells us. “It had its own legs in Australia and Europe, and now the U.S. is finally coming on board. It definitely doesn’t feel like it came out of nowhere for us!” We caught up with Sheppard to talk more about the band’s debut U.S. album, “Bombs Away,” (released March 10) and their North American tour with Meghan Trainor.

Big risks, big payoffs “Geronimo” is about taking a risk in a relationship by starting things up again with an ex, but Sheppard says it has an underlying theme of not being afraid to take chances. “Without risks, there’s no reward, so make that leap of faith,” he says. “Being in a band in itself is taking a risk,” Sheppard says. “There are no guarantees or a safety net. It’s pretty risky, but we did it

Happy sad songs The next lessons the band learns will be on the road with tourmate Meghan Trainor. Like Trainor, the band is known for playful, upbeat songs, but don’t be fooled by the happy melodies. Some of the lyrics off the new album are actually quite sad. “We wrote

a song called ‘Let Me Down Easy,’ which kind of started that juxtaposition of lyrics and music. We found it interesting but didn’t really think of a conscious decision to do that. But that seems to be what happens,” Sheppard explains. Whether they’re singing about breakups or new love, it’s bound to be a heck of a party.

anyway.” For his part, Sheppard never really had a plan B. “I cannot explain to you how much I loathed being at university,” he says.

Learning on the road He dropped out to pursue music and never looked back. “It’s given me the opportunity to truly express myself, see the world and

meet all sorts of different people who are at the top of their field,” he says. “Sitting in the classroom and reading lines of text, you can only learn so much, but it’s when you get out there in the world and really experience it for yourself; that’s the real classroom. People are allergic to dogs but we don’t feel the need to limit the amount of dogs in the country to help out those few that are allergic. People are allergic to trees, seeds, ragweed, various different foods, even alcohol. This doesn’t prevent the rest of the country from experiencing all those things. Re: ‘Harshing the buzz’ (Metro, March 11) I find it funny that nine out of 10 teens tried smoking pot when I was in school, and now I’m sure that number is even higher given the way the world is. Yet never have I nor anyone I know here in this establishment of over 1,500 people heard of someone having an allergic reaction, going to the hospital or anything even remotely similar. People are allergic to nuts,

Aside from being toxic to the sensitive paws of dogs and fragile roots of plants and trees, using salt for snow removal harms our infrastructure and is dangerous to us. Perhaps the city should begin using a salt and sand mixture — a more environmentally friendly and cheaper way to melt snow. S. TAUBES, VIA EMAIL

Considering cigarette smokers are already paying for everything this city does, why not expand the extortion? JENNIFER CLARK, VIA EMAIL

‘The Madness’ expected to hit the Hub quite hard NCAA. Northeastern is back in the tourney, while Harvard is looking to cash in. The college basketball world will pause as the brackets will be unveiled this coming Sunday for this year’s NCAA Tournament field. Sixty-eight of 351 teams advance, 32 teams via automatic conference bids and 36 at-large selections. The team to beat is Kentucky, who have become the first Power-5 conference team to finish the regular season undefeated since 1975-76 National Champion Indiana. The Wildcats are the nation’s top defensive team with a balanced offensive attack. College basketball has never witnessed such depth and balance with nine players averaging over 15 minutes per game, each contributing at least five points. So, Kentucky is your Goliath. The David? It might just be here in New England: Northeastern

are led by 6-foot-5 senior Wesley Saunders, who paces the team in scoring and steals. He is second in both assists and rebounds. Siyani Chambers’ accuracy has regressed this season but he still presents the ability to change the game with his speed and defense. Tommy Amaker has established Harvard as the top program in the league and the city.

brought the Huskies dancing for the first time since 1991. Northeastern is a dangerous team that shoots at a high percentage, keeps their opponents off the offensive glass and rarely gives trips to the

charity stripe. They are likely to be a No. 14 seed, which has been responsible for some of the tournament’s biggest upsets, including Mercer over Duke last season and Harvard’s victory in 2013.

A one-game, do-or-die situation for the Crimson this Saturday against Yale. Harvard is trying to advance to a fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. They

Sports news you need to know Fitz the favorite

The Jets obtained Ryan Fitzpatrick on Wednesday in a trade with the Texans, shipping a late-round draft pick for a quarterback who has played in 96 NFL games since being drafted in 2005. Fitzpatrick won’t be promised the starting job by Jets management, as one league source tells Metro that “the move was done with the idea that Ryan is the starter come Week 1. “He’s much more a sure thing,” the source said. “Will he have to win the job? Yes. Do the Jets expect him to? Yes.” Geno Smith will likely be his competition in camp. KRISTIAN DYER

There is no doubting Kevin Ollie’s ability to put together an improbable run after what was witnessed last season. It’s win or go home the rest of the way for the Huskies. The season has been plagued with lost opportunities and close defeats. Six of their 13 losses are by a total of 12 points. Senior Ryan Boatright has had an All-America-caliber campaign and the “kids,” mostly freshmen and sophomores, have flashed their potential in spots. LEIGH KLEIN @LeighAlanKlein sports@metro.us

Jets going all-in with Revis

RYAN FITZPATRICK GETTY IMAGES

Jets fans are still glowing from Tuesday night’s megareunion with cornerback Darrelle Revis. Wednesday gave many the chance to take a second glance at Revis’ price tag in New York. According to ESPN, Revis’ $14 million per year salary ties elite cornerbacks Richard Sherman and Patrick Petersen as the highest-paid players at that particular position. But where Revis wins is the money up front. He will get $48 million in the first three years of the deal, including the well-documented $39 million in guaranteed money. The Jets are now expected to land cornerback Antonio Cromartie as well. MATT BURKE

Mildly hot Bruins host Lightning

The Bruins refuse to go away as they won their third straight game Tuesday night, 3-1, on the road over the Senators. The B’s will be looking for their fourth win in a row Thursday at home against the Lightning (7 p.m., NESN). Boston (34-22-10) is clinging to the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference while the Lightning are second in the Atlantic Division, owning a 42-20-6 record. MATT BURKE

More home runs against the Red Sox and most everything will be forgiven. Yankees DH and third baseman Alex Rodriguez blasted his first home run since his yearlong suspension on Wednesday as he took Boston’s Brandon Workman deep. A-Rod started the game at third base.

NFL

Kellysaysno toMariota Eagles head coach Chip Kelly hasn’t been shy about making big moves recently, but his plans going forward will not include him trading up in the 2015 NFL draft to select Marcus Mariota. At least, that’s what he’s saying this week. “Let’s dispel that right now,” Kelly said. “I think that stuff ’s crazy. You guys have been going with that stuff all along. I think Marcus is the best quarterback in the draft. [But] we will never mortgage our future to go all the way up to get somebody like that, because we have too many other holes we have to take care of.”
