All hail the puppet master of Brookline Theater. Saturday was World Day of Puppetry, so Metro caught up with celebrated local puppeteer “Uncle Nappy.” In an age of digital entertainment, puppet shows seem quaint, a relic from an earlier time, but the Puppet Showplace Theatre in Brookline is pulling strings to keep the art form alive. Located in an old brownstone directly across from the Brookline Village T stop, the theater is small and cozy, with benches set up, almost churchlike, but with room for children to roam. The theater caters to all kinds of puppets and audiences, large or small, young or old. Children’s shows are often rowdy, bustling with wobbly, wide-eyed, excited toddlers, but nevertheless always entertaining. Founded by Mary Churchill in 1975, this year is the theater’s 40th anniversary. They are celebrating with more than 300 shows from resident puppeteers as well as guests. “We really are the center for puppetry in New England,” says communication director and puppeteer Brenda Huggins, “Other companies are doing theater, but we are special in that we only do puppets.” The theater has shows, classes and workshops all year-

“You don’t know what’s going on in a kid’s life, but if they can come here for 30 minutes, they might forget about what is going on. It’s truly a gift.” Napolitano round with times and performances varying depending on the time of year. “We do a lot in the summer,” Huggins said, “We have puppet playtime, field trips and even camps.”
Though the theater is mainly oriented toward kids, it has shows for every age. Adults can enjoy “Slams,” which are theatrical mini-plays that use — or sometimes abuse — puppets for all or part of the drama. The theater employs a few “resident puppeteers,” but many of its shows are put on by traveling puppeteers and companies. New England native Jim “Uncle Nappy” Napolitano is one such puppeteer. Dubbed one of America’s most-beloved shadow puppeteers, and a graduate of the University of Connecticut’s Puppet Arts program, he has toured all

Proceeds from the sale of stickers, buttons and bookmarks bearing the Yeti’s likeness will benefit the MSPCA’s Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, the Associated Press reported. He is selling the swag on Etsy.com.
The Yeti gained notoriety and a strong social media following this past winter after popping up during blizzards and helping residents dig out their cars. Napolitano says he likes puppetry because it is more engaging than traditional theater. “In puppetry, you can be everything, every part of the show,” said Napolitano — who is known for interacting with the audience — is a favorite among both children and their parents. Napolitano’s most recent show at the Showplace even had a disclaimer for the parents: “Don’t get mad at me, get mad at the French,” when refer-

He believes part of his success is aiming to please the entire audience, “I try and entertain the adults, if a big person is taking their little person to the show, they shouldn’t be bored.” Napolitano travels every where from assisted living facilities to libraries to camps, from Connecticut to Ottawa, Canada. “You might not eat steak and lobster every night,” Napolitano said. “But if you hustle, you can make it.” SHAPLEIGH WEBSTER @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
Poll
52 percent of residents oppose 2024 Olympic bid The majority of Boston-area residents now oppose the U.S. bid to have the city host the 2024 Olympic Games, amid growing concern that taxpayers would be stuck with the bill, according to a poll released on Friday. The poll, conducted by the MassInc Polling Group, found
that 52 percent of residents oppose the idea of having the Summer Games in and around eastern Massachusetts. Polls conducted in February found that 46 percent opposed the idea. In January, just 33 percent opposed it. Some 65 percent of the 504 registered voters polled from March 16-18 said they believed taxpayer funds would be required to pay for the Games, which organizers have estimated will cost about $9.5 billion. City tackles mounds of snow trash Clean up. OďŹƒcials want more public works funding to speed up eorts. After an historic 108.6 inches of snowfall in Boston this winter, the melting snow has revealed something disturbing to resi-
dents: lots and lots of trash. “After this unparalleled and unprecedented storm, the city is very dirty, and we have to clean it up, Councilor Matt O’Malley said at a recent public hearing on how the city should handle the debris cleanup. Since the snowfall began, trash collection has been down 11 percent and the city has spent more than $40 million
on snow removal, according to Interim Public Works Commissioner Michael Dennehy. Dennehy told councilors that since nightly street sweeping crews began working last Tuesday, more than 200 tons of trash has been collected. That’s more than 400,000 pounds. O’Malley convened the hearing with officials in charge of
other major city services in order to develop strategies to combat the increasing problem. Officials agreed to extend “Boston Shines, the citywide volunteer cleanup program, throughout the months of April and May. CHRISTINA BEIENE @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Florida mother skips hearing after charged with killing her children Police. They have not said how the children were killed except to say they were not stabbed, sliced or shot. A Florida mother waived her right to attend a first court hearing on Sunday to face charges of murdering two of her young children and attempting to murder her 5-month-old baby, an official at Brevard County Detention Center said. Jessica Lacey McCarty, 33, of Palm Bay, was represented by a public defender, with a judge setting arraignment for April 21, the official said. McCarty was ordered held without bond and remains under medical watch at Brevard County Detention Center.
The medical examiner’s office on Sunday were to perform autopsies on McCarty’s two older children, ages 7 and 6, to determine how they died. McCarty’s 5-month-old baby remains in critical condition in an Orlando hospital, officials said. Police said they were still putting together the sequence of events and added that investigators from the Department of Children and Families had visited McCarty in the past. Officers went to McCarty’s home Friday after receiving two emergency calls, one from a woman who claimed to have killed her children, police said in a news release on Saturday. When police arrived, they found McCarty in front of the house, holding a butcher’s knife in her hand and suffer-

things you need to know coming weeks. Cruz, 44, has built a reputation as an unyielding advocate for conservative principles in his two years in the Senate. He pushed his party to force a government shutdown in 2013 in an unsuccessful effort to deny funding to President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, drawing the disapproval of Republican leaders in Washington and praise from the grassroots Tea Party movement. As a presidential candidate, Cruz is likely to stake out a position on his party’s far-right wing. In recent weeks, he has told audiences to look closely at the actions of Republican candidates who say they stick up for conservative principles.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a conservative firebrand who has frequently clashed with leaders of his Republican Party, will announce on Monday that he plans to run for president, an aide said. Cruz will be the first major figure from either party to announce his candidacy for the 2016 election when he speaks at Liberty University, an evangelical Christian school in Virginia. US taking steps to fix technical error with Boeing GPS satellites
McCain to Obama: Get over your temper tantrum
The Air Force on Sunday said it is working to resolve a technical error that affects some Boeing GPS satellites, although it did not hurt the accuracy of GPS signals received by users. Air Force Space Command said the glitch affected the “indexing” of some GPS messages from a type of satellite known as IIF, which affects how messages are sorted and stored. The issue came to light in recent days, but a close examination of archive data showed the problem had gone unnoticed since 2013. REUTERS
Sen. John McCain accused President Barack Obama of throwing a “temper tantrum” over comments by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, adding to the conflict between the White House and the Republicandominated Congress over Israel. McCain, asked on CNN’s “State of the Union” if U.S.Israel relations were at a dangerous point, said, “I think that’s up to the president of the United States.” Obama’s relationship with Netanyahu was strained further by comments Netanyahu made in the closing moments of his successful campaign.

Confederate flag plate debate reaches Supreme Court
The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday will take up a free speech case on whether Texas was wrong in rejecting a specialty vehicle license plate displaying the Confederate flag — to some an emblem of Southern pride and to others a symbol of racism. The justices will hear a one-hour oral argument in a case that raises the issue of how states can allow or reject politically divisive messages on license plates without violating free speech rights. States can generate revenue by allowing groups to propose specialty plates that people then pay a fee to put on their vehicle.

Is this the end of One Direction?
There might be trouble in teen pop paradise, as One Direction’s Zayn Malik has been sent home early from the band’s current tour. Malik is said to be “stressed,” though some worry this might be a sign of greater trouble for the group. “A lot of people in their camp fear that this is the beginning of the end for One Direction,” a source tells Radar. “The higher-ups ordered Malik to take a break because there are concerns for his well-being. Malik’s management is livid right now, but they are also very sympathetic to his situation. He is in bad shape, which is the real reason he went home to London.”

BØRNS’ four-song EP “Candy” has only been out for four months, but the band’s single “Electric Love” is gaining momentum and has been highlighted on Spotify and SiriusXM radio. The band was a keynote at YouTube’s discover showcase last Thursday, playing their full EP plus a new song, “American Money,” which they dedicated to “all the strippers in the audience.” As their EP title suggests, their sound is sweet and sugary — an airy blend of glam rock and electronica. The ’70s influence is apparent not only in the music, but in frontman Damon Campbell’s proclivity for the word “groovy.” EL

WINTER CLASSES -STARTING NOW
If you haven’t heard of James Bay yet, get ready for it — soon, his name will be everywhere. The singersongwriter’s debut album, “Chaos and the Calm,” comes out today and is expected to debut at number one in the U.K. Why is he such a big deal? Here’s what you need to know:
1
He’s following in some pretty big footsteps. He might not be getting radio play yet, but that didn’t stop him from collecting the 2015 Critic’s Choice Award at The Brits last month. For newcomers, this is the award to win, as it is widely known to predict future success. Adele won the first Critic’s Choice Award in 2008, and Sam Smith and Ellie Goulding are both past recipients, too.

2
His music is already getting the movie treatment. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bay will be singing the theme song for the next James Bond movie, “Spectre,” which also sets him on the path Adele took.
3
He’s in Taylor Swift’s inner circle. Bay is close with Swift and Swift’s guy bestie, Ed Sheeran, but not because he pur-
sued them: Both musicians actually reached out to him. Swift first saw Bay when he was touring with Hozier and couldn’t resist telling him she’s a fan. And Sheeran spotted Bay at The Brits and broke away from reporters to tell Bay that he loved “Hold Back The River.” EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

What words do students look up the most? Despite the deluge of nonsense words kids these days are using (YOLO, yasss, eek), every now and then college students have to actually look up a real word. Dictionary.com has rounded up the top words looked up by college students across the country, and you might be surprised by the words students are searching for. “Many searches from students look at words for homework or research – think affect vs. eect,â€? says Michele Turner, CEO of Dictionary. com. “Once drilled down to speciďŹ c areas of the country, the data shows that issues aecting each campus are very dierent.â€?

Organization. Tackle the disaster that is your desk for good. Spring is finally here, which means that in addition to getting ready for the soonto-be sunny weather, now is also the perfect time to spruce up your office life. “During the spring, people seem to get happier and enjoy the sunshine, says Tamara Kano Myles, an organizational expert and the author of “The Secret to Peak Productivity: A Simple Guide to Reaching Your Personal Best. “We are also at the end of the first quarter [of the year], so you still have the next nine months to make strides toward your goals.
Wondering where to get started? Myles offers these suggestions:
Sort through your files “Are you keeping a lot of outdated paperwork? Myles asks. “Go through your files and get rid of what’s no longer relevant. She adds that this bit of cleaning may bring you luck in the future. “From a feng shui perspective, it’s good to have empty space in your cabinet to attract new clients.
try to sort them but will quickly lose track, Myles notes. Instead, she suggests making use of her “three to’s system for every document that comes your way. “I call them ‘to do,’ ‘to file’ and ‘to toss.’ If you start by making those three files, everything will move a lot more quickly.
“A lot of executives receive up to 300 emails a day, and they are just buried, Myles says. “Don’t use your inbox as a secondary to-do list. I suggest only accessing your email at specific times each day — for example, once in the morning, once at lunch, then mid-afternoon and at the end of the day.

Kendall Jenner handling it well Re: ‘Kendall Jenner opens up about Bruce Jenner’ (Metro, March 19) In this day and age, it’s hard to remember that celebrities are people just like the rest of us. Metro posted an article about Kendall Jenner comparing her father’s sex change operation to getting a new pair of shoes. Let’s forget the fact that she is a public figure for once and remember that this is a 19-year-old girl trying to come to grips with the fact that her dear old dad is becoming

The recent massive turnover has made numerous jerseys available at a much more reasonable price, and provided the player didn’t leave on bad terms (Werth, T.O., etc.), most fans have no issue buying a jersey of a defunct player. Because, “OMG he’s not on the team anymore?” A true fan will support his team no matter what, and will support their favorite players no matter where they play. BOSTON’S BEST PARTIER I invite ur fake ass out and u make up excuses cause you won’t pay for half the bill. While Edelman deserves party points for actually living in LA in the off-season, Gronkowski wins this exchange for openly stating that during the off-season “12:45 p.m. classifies as “the morning, and for getting this jab in at 4:10 a.m..
There was a period in this town’s history where stories like Wade Boggs drinking 64 beers on a cross-country flight were legend and nothing more. Of course, had the iPhone existed in 1989, there’s no doubt Mike Greenwell or Marty Barrett would have documented the feat. Which current Boston athlete is the most Boggsonian? Who is the biggest ham in front of a cell phone camera? Who would be the best to party with? We give you the odds:
Mike Napoli (12-1)
Rob Gronkowski (6-1)
Gronk is built to drink, standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing in at 265 pounds and in most off-seasons there’s a new picture of him with a porn star or at a Vegas-style swimming pool popping up every other week. Strangely, this off-season has been relatively quiet for the tight end. For every “Grind time with DJ no shirt @ChrisGronkowski! #Grind1st #EarnToPlay tweet we get in 2015 from Gronk, there’s a boring “straight chilling and relaxing tweet the next day. Is the 25-year-old Gronkowski finally growing up? Say it ain’t so.
Rob Gronkowski had the second-best performance in February’s Patriots parade, but the day belonged to Julian Edelman. / GETTY IMAGES
Julian Edelman (9-1)
Edelman not only had that Tinder episode following the Pats’ Super Bowl win, but he also showed up to a Harvard party (yes, Harvard) with an 8 to 1 girl:guy ratio. (There were

pictures). Then, earlier this month, Edelman and the aforementioned Gronkowski got into something of a Twitter beef when Gronk was in L.A. (where Edelman lives during the offseason). Edelman tweeted to Gronk at 12:45 p.m. on March 12: “@RobGronkowski I love how you’re in LA and I haven’t seen you‌ #smh #wheresthebeef #Iusedtoknowgronkâ€? Gronk replied on March 13 at 4:10 a.m.: “@edelman u call me out this morning, then
Napoli was the Edelman of the Red Sox’ 2013 World Series celebration, famously walking around the streets of Boston late night with his shirt off and a cigarette dangling from his mouth. After the Patriots won, he tweeted out, “Sudden urge to rampage down Boylston!!! Who is with me? Napoli was once linked to porn star Rachel Starr, and in one of the pornographic photos that were leaked from teammate Clay Buchholz’s phone last fall, what was believed to be Napoli’s hand appeared groping some blonde woman’s bare bum. Old-fashioned fun. Any Bruins player (14-1)
The Bruins — and hockey players in general — don’t really count in this discussion because they’re expected to dominate parties. Would it surprise anyone if Zdeno Chara once downed 64 beers on a direct flight from Hanscom Air Force Base to Calgary? He just wouldn’t brag about it.

Larry Bird ain’t walking through that door, nor is a case of Bud Heavy’s with his name on it. We don’t really know anyone on the 2014-15 Celtics too well, mostly because 11 of their 12 players arrived on the scene last week. But teams often take on the personality of their head coach and Brad Stevens once said that the hardest thing he drinks is Canada Dry. Seriously.
