Fenway groundskeeper: ‘I still get goosebumps’ Interview. Metro has a conversation with the man in charge of manicuring Fenway Park. David Mellor’s road to Fenway began when his big league dreams were crushed by the bumper of a car outside a fastfood restaurant in Ohio. Just a month out of high school, Mellor was walking to a McDonald’s when he was struck by a car entering the parking lot and thrown 20 feet into one of the restaurant’s brick walls. The car then hit a handrail, pinning Mellor’s knee against the wall. At 18, he had hoped to play baseball in college. But it would be two-and-half years before he could walk without crutches. His pitching days were done. “When it first happened I was pretty mad at the world,” said Mellor, now 51. “But my family told me ‘You’ve got time to find a career you’re passionate about.’” Mellor loved baseball, had enjoyed science classes in high school and had worked as landscaper mowing lawns during his youth. He loves the smell of fresh grass, even though he’s allergic to it. He would eventually enroll at Ohio State University, where he studied agronomy and landscape horticulture. From there, he would work for the Milwaukee Brewers grounds

crew for 16 years. For the past 15 years, he’s been the director of grounds — the head groundskeeper — at Fenway Park. When Mellor, who lives in the 495 suburbs with his wife and one of his two daughters — tells you he is the luckiest guy in the world, you believe him. “I still get goosebumps, every day,” he said. Despite growing up in Piqua, Ohio Mellor said he’s always been a Sox fan. His grandfather coached college baseball in New England, his father was born in Rhode Island and his mother and her brothers lived in Andover before moving to the Midwest. Wednesday found Mel-
Cycling. Mayor Walsh’s transportation overhaul includes wider bike lanes Mayor Marty Walsh announced a series of transportation initiatives Wednesday that will bring protected bike lanes along a stretch of Commonwealth Avenue and increase the number of mobile-app friendly parking meters. He also called for the elimination of towing cars that interfere with street
sweeping. The plan includes revamping Comm. Ave. from the B.U. Bridge to Packard’s Corner. The project is designed to have a “sizeable separation” between bikes and cars at intersections to reduce the “right hooks,” where a car turns right into a cyclist that is continuing straight down the road. lor and his crew — he manages about 40 people during the season — preparing the grounds for the April 13th Opening Day. After the harshest winter in recent memory, signs of baseball — and spring — are everywhere at the park. The growth blankets that prevent wind burn and reduce frost during the winter have been removed from the outfield. A handful of guys do a once-over the grass with leafblowers. The intent is to “fluff up” the sections of ground that were held down with pins that secured the blankets that covered the field during the winter. The season’s first cut of the grass will occur later in the day. Fenway is starting to look
as it will during the season, but there’s still much to be done. His staff still needs to laser grade the warning track. The tarps and insulation need to be removed from the infield. Where the field transitions to clay from grass needs to be manicured. Parts of the outfield need to be resodded. It’s a lot of meticulous, detailoriented work, he said. He doesn’t seem to mind. “One of the best parts of my job?” he asked, gesturing toward the field from the third base side stands Wednesday. “Helping people create memories out there.” DANNY MCDONALD @DMacCash daniel.mcdonald@metro.us
Bomb scare
Investigation continues into bomb device found in Milton Authorities are still investigating a bomb scare in Milton after police found a device rigged to explode if a certain light switch was turned on inside a Craig Street home. The device was found Tuesday afternoon; a bomb squad disarmed device and
no one was injured. Milton Police Chief Richard Wells told the Boston Globe an electrician found an improvised explosive device – a plastic jug full of accelerant and wired to explode when a light switch was flipped. WBZ reports Homeowner Lindel Williams suspects former tenants might be responsible for the planting the device, although no arrests have been made. DANNY MCDONALD

The embattled but beloved Keytar Bear will join @BostonTweet’s Tom O’Keefe during a rare double appearance at General Assembly Boston. O’Keefe said he is a fan of Keytar Bear’s work. “It should be interesting because Keytar Bear is going to be in character,” said O’Keefe, who has gained nearly 150,000 Twitter followers thanks to his tweets on Boston city life. “The event has been getting a lot of attention. From our all-laser, bladeless LASIK procedure – to exciting developments like our Visian Implantable lens - our commitment to leading edge technology is surpassed only by our dedication to personalized patient care. Patients of New England Eye Center find confidence in knowing we offer experience you can trust and technology you can rely on. NASA-Approved LASIK - Our all-laser, bladeless LASIK at New England Eye Center has greatly improved results and helped take the fear out of having LASIK. The vast majority of our LASIK and PRK patients now achieve 20/20 vision at distance without glasses or contact lenses. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots. Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lens-like device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time. Refractive Lens Exchange - If you’re frustrated with reading glasses and bifocals, our refractive specialists perform a procedure known as Refractive Lens Exchange. By replacing your eye’s aging natural lens with a Intraocular Lens Implant customized specifically for your visual needs - and your lifestyle - allowing you to see better, look younger and never have to worry about developing cataracts! Laser Cataract Surgery - For seniors experiencing changes in their vision – or who have been diagnosed with a cataract – New England Eye Center is turning the dream of Laser Cataract Surgery into reality. We are currently among only the top 3% of practices in the country to offer patients the added precision and accuracy of Laser Cataract Surgery using OptiMedica® Catalys™ Precision Laser System. This year, take your vision to the NEXT LEVEL by giving yourself or a loved one the Gift of Sight. Now that’s a Gift that keeps on Giving. A blessed New Year from the surgeons and staff of New England Eye Center.

Investigators hope cockpit tape will unravel crash riddle No survivors. Three Americans are among the dead in Germanwings crash. Investigators have retrieved cockpit voice recordings from one of the black boxes of the German Airbus plane that smashed into the Alps, killing everyone onboard, and they expect a preliminary read-out of their content in days, an official said on Wednesday.
The development came as French President Francois Hollande, Germany’s Angela Merkel and Spain’s Mariano Rajoy traveled to the crash site in a remote French Alpine region to pay tribute to the 150 victims, mostly Germany and Spanish. As well as Germans and Spaniards, victims included three Americans, a Moroccan and citizens of Britain, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Colombia, Denmark, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Iran and the Netherlands, officials said. Former war prisoner Sgt. Bergdahl faces desertion charges Charges. Desertion carries a max prison term of five years, misbehavior count carries a max term of life in prison. U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, a former Taliban prisoner in Afghanistan, was formally charged on Wednesday with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted of the most serious count, the Army said. Bergdahl’s attorney, Eugene Fidell of Yale Law School, said the Army had scheduled an Article 32 investigation, similar to a ground jury proceeding in civilian law, to determine whether there was sufficient evidence to proceed with a court-martial on the charges. The initial hearing is set for April 22, he said. Bergdahl, 28, was released from Taliban custody last summer in a controversial prisoner swap that saw five Taliban prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba transferred to Qatar, where they were required to remain for a year. An initial wave of euphoria
over Bergdahl’s release was followed by a backlash among U.S. lawmakers angry because they were not given 30 days notice before the transfer of the Guantanamo prisoners, as required by law. Some of Bergdahl’s former Army comrades also came forward and said they believed he deserted his post. Former Army Sergeant Evan Buetow, who served with Bergdahl, said on Wednesday that the former war prisoner had been treated fairly by the Army and needed “to answer for what he did.” Republican lawmakers also backed the Army’s deci-
sion to move ahead with the charges. Sen. John McCain, head of the Senate Armed Services Committee and himself a Vietnam War prisoner, said it was an “important step” toward determining Bergdahl’s accountability. REUTERS

To get the twenty, I had to promise Josh that I wouldn’t be sad about him leaving for college. I’m usually pretty good at keeping promises, but not this one. I’m about to tell Josh that I just want to go home when I see a booth filled with animals. The lady at the booth says they’re crocheted. I don’t know about that, but I do know that I want the green dog. I hand the lady the twenty and she asks what we’re buying it for. I tell her Josh is going to college and leaving me. Vin Diesel has high hopes for ‘Furious 7’
CULTURE
This is what confidence looks like. / ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES
With the seventh film in the“Fast and Furious” franchise set to come out next month and expected to rack up the kind of titanic global success the last few have seen, it’s understandable that series star Vin Diesel might be feeling a bit bullish on its prospects. Maybe too bullish, actually. “Universal is going to have the biggest movie in history with
this movie. It will probably win best picture at the Oscars, unless the Oscars don’t want to be relevant ever,” Diesel tells Variety. “This will win best picture. There is nothing that will ever come close to the power of this thing.” Mr. Diesel, I’m glad you’re so pleased with your latest work, but let’s temper this excitement a bit, yeah?
Looks like the “stress” was more severe than we thought. Five years after being cobbled together by Simon Cowell on “The X Factor,” One Direction has gone from a five-some to a foursome as Zayn Malik announced that he is resigning from the hugely successful pop group. Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, currently on a world tour, will continue as a quartet. “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined,” Malik says in a statement. “But after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologize to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right.” Man, did I have this one wrong. In my One Direction/Spice Girls correlation chart, I totally thought Malik was the Scary Spice, not the Ginger Spice. But there you go.

‘Game of Thrones’ star Lena Headey gets poetic about divorce Lena Headey, who plays reigning “Game of Thrones” ice queen Cersei Lannister, is a lot more emotionally open in real life, especially when it comes to discussing her 2012 divorce from Peter Loughran. “It’s tough,” she tells More magazine. “There’s a lot of hurt and sadness and disappointment. This week, WonderCon canceled a panel about fan fiction after complaints on Twitter. If you’re not familiar with the term, fan fiction is a story about an established character or world written by someone other than the original author. Well, maybe you heard about it when “Fifty Shades of Grey” came out. That was based on “Twilight” fan fiction. Please don’t judge the genre based on that, OK? The panel, hosted by Chris Gore, which would have read aloud “the weirdest and wildest fan fiction found on the Internet,” was canceled after a barrage of angry tweets, thinking he was mocking the subject and the authors. For the record, the readings were to be done with the consent of the authors. I bring this up because fan fiction often gets a bad rap. However, if you’re like me, you don’t really want your favorite stories to end after the book does. Heck, I vowed to read only dead authors as

a kid because I had to wait so long to get new stories before the Internet appeared! For people who, say, love “Harry Potter,” reading about the further adventures of Hermione and Ron is an absolute blast! Yes, there is also a class of fan fiction that might have, say, Harry and Ron in a kind of relationship not implied by the books. So what? Don’t tell me you never wondered
about that. Honestly, a lot of the bad rap comes from this sort of story. I was once sent something written about characters from “My Little Pony” that I’m pretty sure isn’t anatomically possible, and I’m probably going to need years of therapy to remove it from my brain. That said, there is nothing wrong with self-expression. Gore mentioned something that got me thinking

about the subject last night. He said that, if you think about it, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is a sort of fan fiction. It’s a love letter from fans who grew up with the franchise. I’m not saying it’s all wellwritten. I’m not saying some of it isn’t going to make the back of your eyeballs itch; but do yourself a favor and check some of it out. You may be surprised.

ADMIT ONE
‘Big Fish’ After a less than stellar, threemonth run on Broadway, “Big Fish,” a sweet movie-turnedmusical, underwent an overhaul by its creative team in an effort to make the show more accessible to small theaters. Unfortunately, it still feels like a marginal adaptation of a touching story. For starters, the music is boring and filled with enough bad rhymes that you could get distracted trying to think of other possible rhymes. It also contributes nothing to advance the already flimsy plot. “Big Fish” is the story of Edward Bloom, a tall-taletelling, traveling salesman whose grown son, Will, harbors resentments and long-standing embarrassment about his father’s penchant for exaggeration. Edward’s impending death brings Will to his bedside for a reconciliation, but not before the big a-ha moment. So much of the SpeakEasy Stage Company’s current production is flat that even this life-changing awareness is

unspectacular. Edward (Steven Goldstein) has no chemistry with his wife Sandra (Aimee Doherty). Their son, Will (Sam Simahk) displays the only real emotion in the production, but his constant state of annoyance is, well, annoying. Lee David Skunes delivers an impressive turn as Karl the Giant, walking on stilts and creating the only truly touching moment at Edward’s grave. And Aubin Wise’s solid performance as The Witch provides some much-needed magic. “Big Fish” could be a good musical. But as is, it won’t even swim in small ponds. NICK

Will Ferrell embarrasses Kevin Hart with his wack clothes in “Get Hard.” / WARNER BROS. PICTURES
1
‘Get Hard’ While his fellow frat packers fade into obscurity, Will Ferrell wisely hitches a ride with Kevin Hart. The “SNL” vet plays a rich guy who hires Hart’s small businessman to prep him for jail, assuming that’s he’s an ex-con (he’s not). Queasy racial (and token gay panic) humor ensues.
2
‘Home’ Through the magic of animation, we finally get the comedic pairing of Rihanna and Jim Parsons humanity knew would happen one day. The two voice a teen and a cute alien, respectively, who team up to save humanity.
3
‘Serena’ Filmed between “Silver Linings Playbook” and
“American Hustle,” this period drama drops Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence into the Depression-era South for some old-time melodrama, with a couple requisite B. Coop topless shots, natch.
4
‘It Follows’ What was once a tiny indie horror is now being treated like a massive mainstream crossover. And good too, because this spookfest — about a teen cursed with a plague in which she’s hunted by zombie-like creatures only she can see — is legitimately totally terrifying.
5
‘Danny Collins’ Al Pacino plays a Neil Diamond-y superstar who realizes in his 70s that he’s spent his life selling out. He intends to
change that, plus connect with the bitter son he never bothered meeting (Bobby Cannavale).
6
‘Seymour: An Introduction’ Ethan Hawke’s latest directorial doodle is an intimate documentary profile of Seymour Bernstein, an 80-something retired pianist who spends most of the film offering his unique view of life as an extension of one’s art.
7
‘Kumiko the Treasure Hunter’ How’s this for a hook? Rinko Kikuchi plays a lonely Tokyoite convinced that the buried satchel of money from the movie “Fargo” is real and heads to the American Midwest to find it. This movie is great.
8
‘The Divergent Series: Insurgent’ Shailene Woodley’s YA series gets its second of four outings, this time finding her on the run from evil Kate Winslet, hanging out in communes with Octavia Spencer and Naomi Watts and making googly eyes with her dull romantic partner (Theo James, who’s boring).
9
‘The Gunman’ If Liam Neeson can rebrand himself as an action god, why not Sean Penn? The only catch is Penn is a far more serious (some would say humorless) celebrity who can’t do a shoot-’em-up without a subplot about humanitarian aid work. But unlike Neeson, he does have abs of steel.

How to make an iconic album cover
Florence + The Machine

“I think with one exception, or maybe two, generally the album titles come after the photos have been taken. I think the idea begins with a great cover. On this occasion, we had the idea for the photograph. It’s interesting because between snapping away Stuart turns to me and says, ‘I want to call the album “Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance…”’ I think he had the name as a potential song title and then when he was taking photographs it seemed to make sense and he turned to me and said, ‘What about that?’ Our previous records are pretty literal; there’s no real room for interpretation, but this record is wide open. Every time I take a look at it, I ponder it,” explains Jackson.

indie rock music of the past two decades. Now, after nearly 20 years as a band, they’ve turned their sound upside down. With the recent release of their ninth record, “Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance,” the sextet has not only taken on more socially conscious topics, but they seem to have turned to disco and dance. “It just gives me a feeling,” says founding member/guitarist/vocalist Stevie Jackson. “It goes with the cover and it comes with
the music. There is a message. I think as we went along, the songs became more outward looking and affected by current events and things happening in the world. Maybe now that we’re not in our 20s anymore — maybe that’s just growing up.” Accompanied by a powerful album cover featuring a woman with crutches and another with a machine gun, the band manages to mix their signature lyrics of the internal struggle with mentions of borrowed guns
and bombs in the Middle East, but they do so by burying the heaviness in a backdrop of beats and bouncy, uptempo rhythms. “I think that’d be called juxtaposition,” says Stevie. “When you’re just writing songs, you don’t really analyze while you’re creating them. Certainly rhythm has become more important, but I feel like there was a need to dance, more than a need for rhythm. It wasn’t like the songs were written on guitar with words and melody and we would say

Saturday, 8 p.m. The Sinclair 52 Church St., Cambridge $20, 18+, 800-745-3000 www.ticketmaster.com One of the most influential styles in the current indie landscape is shoegaze, the lackadaisical, effects-laden, fuzzed-out genre that developed in the late ’80s. British band Swervedriver was one of the first tagged with the label, so it’s no surprise they saw fit to reunite in 2008 after a decade-long breakup; their first post-reunion album, “I Wasn’t Born to Lose You,” dropped this month.
VERITE, whose real name is Kelsey Byrne, appeared seemingly (though not actually) out of the ether with her first single “Strange Enough,” earning widespread praise for its mix of electro-pop and the “sad girl” style of singers like Lana Del Rey. She followed up the summer hit in October with her EP “Echo,” proving she did not intend to be a flash in the pan. ERIC RYAN ANDERSON
‘Let’s make it funky or make it disco.’ It was intrinsic within the songs as we were writing them. Maybe because we’ve been doing it for so long that it sounds better than just a guitar again. It’s also just in the air — with any record it’s what’s in the air at the time. You can’t really calculate that. Sometimes you make a record and it’s introspective, sometimes you make a record that’s outward looking. There’s definitely a pulse and rhythm going through this one.”

Tuscany is famous for being one of the world’s most beautiful regions: A land of rolling green hills and picturesque towns and cities. It’s less well known for its coastal areas. But here you’ll find the food and wine equally memorable, the crowds smaller, the climate cooled by sea breezes and deserted beaches. The city is a gem, hugging the Cape Fear River with the Atlantic Ocean a few miles away. A classic wooden plank boardwalk runs nearly two miles along the scenic river. It’s lined with 200 independent stores, restaurants and hotels with river views. The historic district is one of the largest in the country: 230 blocks of historic homes and churches. You can tour via horse-drawn carriage, Segway, trolley or on foot. Considered one of the most haunted cities in the country, Wilmington (www.hauntedwilmington.com) has nighttime ghosts tours and a tour of haunted pubs. If the city looks familiar, it may be because it’s a popular choice for TV and movie production. There are self-guided tours of locations from “Sleepy Hollow,” “One Tree Hill” and “Dawson’s Creek” and weekend tours of the EUE/Screen Gems studio (www.wilmingtonandbeaches.com/ hollywood-east). Three weeks from now, the 2015 NHL playoffs begin whether the Bruins like it or not. If Boston (36-25-12) wants to be a part of arguably the best postseason in professional sports, it has a great deal of work to do over its final nine regular-season games. Going into Thursday’s meeting (7 p.m., NESN) with powerful Anaheim (46-22-7) at TD Garden, the B’s are in ninth-place in the Eastern Conference. Ottawa (37-24-11) is one point ahead of Boston for a wild card spot and it has a game in-hand. Even more troubling for the B’s is the fact that the Senators are the hottest team in the NHL right now (winners of their last seven games) while the Bruins have dropped their last five. Trying to figure out how Bos-

ton has fallen so far this season, a year after winning the Presidents’ Trophy is tough to rationally explain. What is for certain is that if the B’s should miss the playoffs, big changes will come over what would be an endless summer. General manager Peter Chiarelli and possibly head coach Claude Julien could be fired and some of their top players could be traded. “We all know where we are, we all know what we have to do if we want to be in the playoffs,” Julien said this week. While one of their top de-
fensemen, Dougie Hamilton (10 goals, 32 assists), is now out indefinitely with a shoulder injury, though the Bruins could get back center David Krejci (7 goals, 19 assists in 38 games) either against the Ducks or this weekend when they have a back-to-back against the Rangers on Saturday (1 p.m., NESN) then at the Hurricanes on Sunday (5, NESN). Krejci, Boston’s top-line center, has been out since Feb. 20 with a knee injury. After playing 11 games in 18 grueling days (5-4-2), the Bruins returned home on Sunday for a much-needed chance to regroup. “We know what’s at stake and we know how hard we have to play,” noted Milan Lucic. “This is the playoffs: we’ve been talking about playoff hockey and being in that mode for the last month. Now it’s even more of a reality than before.” RICH SLATE @RichSlate

Ravens and Jets gang up on Patriots
Hours after news broke that the Jets were hitting the Pats with tampering charges, the Ravens got a new league rule passed that makes it illegal for an offensive player wearing a number between 1 and 49 or 80 and 89 to report as “ineligible” outside of the tackle box. The Pats used several “trick” formations in their 35-31 win over the Ravens in the AFC divisional round, much to the ire of Ravens coach John Harbaugh. “It would affect a lot of other plays, the spead punt formation and stuff like that,” Pats coach Bill Belichick said. Ortiz talks about recent absence
Rousey speaks on her ovaries
Red Sox slugger David Ortiz talked with WEEI.com about his recent absence due to dehydration. “I don’t know why people would criticize,” Ortiz said. “Dehydrating is part of being human. You know how hot it’s been down here?”
UFC women’s bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey was asked by ESPN if she would like to have kids one day, and she replied, “Definitely. I’m an ovarian goldmine. I can’t waste these genes.” Rousey recently made headlines by beating Cat Zingano in 14 seconds. MATT BURKE

Massachusetts General Hospital invites you to share your opinions about a future research study in our community that will involve Exception From Informed Consent (EFIC) rules. The ESETT study will treat people with an emergency condition called status epilepticus (long seizures that do not stop). People with or without a history of seizures may develop status epilepticus. The ESETT study aims to ďŹ nd out which of three commonly prescribed medications is best for treating status epilepticus in children and adults in the emergency room. What is EFIC? It is a special rule for conducting research studies in situations where the person may be too ill or unable to give their informed consent. In addition, there are other conditions that must be met: it must be a life threatening situation where there is no known effective medical treatment, and the treatment needs to be given quickly.
