Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in court Thursday. / JANE FLAVELL COLLINS

The Boston Marathon bombing jury on Thursday viewed FBI mockups of the twin pressurecooker bombs that ripped through the crowd at the race’s finish line in 2013, killing three people and injuring 264. Jurors passed the sixquart pots, lined with metal BB pellets and featuring a jerry-rigged remote detonator

built of model car parts and a Christmas light, from hand to hand after an FBI special agent read out the instructions in al Qaeda’s “Inspire” magazine that prosecutors contend defendant Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his older brother used to make their bombs. “It’s pretty heavy,” FBI supervisory special agent Edward

departed One Direction member, Zayn Malik, who recently left the boy band. The new name? The Leonard P. Zayn Malik Bridge. The petition went up Thursday morning, and by the early evening, had only managed to collect about 50 signatures.

The creator of the petition to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is listed as Matthew Shearer of Allston. Metro could not immediately confirm if it is the same Shearer who is a local radio personality. Now, in case you haven’t been following all this: Malik

Knapp said as he hoisted one of the mock bombs into a black backpack of the type that the Tsarnaev brothers are accused of having used to carry their bombs. Each silvery bomb was marked with a black cross of tape over its lid, through which a fuse was threaded. REUTERS

Former Pats TE’s murder trial. Ex-NFL star Aaron Hernandez’s trial interrupted by bomb threat A bomb scare forced the evacuation on Thursday of the Fall River courthouse where the murder trial of ex-NFL player Aaron Hernandez was underway. A court officer at the Bristol County Superior Court in Fall River ordered everyone in the courtroom to leave by the

emergency stairwell just after midday because “someone called in a bomb threat. Dozens of people, including reporters, attorneys and court officers filed down the stairs and outside, where it was raining. Police advised them to stand across the street and a fire truck arrived minutes later.

Judge Susan Garsh told reporters jurors had been moved to a building across the street from the courthouse. Hernandez was placed in a secured prison van. Hernandez, 25, is charged with fatally shooting Odin Lloyd, a semi-professional football player who was dating

his fiancee’s sister, early on June 17, 2013. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of life in prison. He had a $40 million contract as tight end for the New England Patriots but was dropped from the team hours after his arrest in 2013. REUTERS

Cannonball found by fishermen detonated in Southie Police on Thursday morning blew up an old cannonball that a fisherman at Castle Island in Southie found. The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad, along with the U.S. Navy, buried the cannonball, which may have dated to the Civil War, in a sand berm at Carson Beach to absorb the detonation. The device was most likely inert, state police said, but was detonated around noon out of caution. METRO

US lawmaker to Homeland Security: ‘Clean up’ Secret Service

A U.S. lawmaker on Thursday questioned Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson’s choice of a veteran agent to lead the U.S. Secret Service and said the agency that protects the American president needs to be cleaned up. Representative Hal Rogers, the Appropriations Committee chairman, referred to a string of Secret Service security lapses and embarrassments, most recently the March 4 breach of a White House security barrier by agents returning from a party. “That agency needs discipline.

We all have the highest of regard and respect for the Secret Service. However, some agents are tarnishing that image, and it needs to be cleaned up,” Rogers, a Republican, said at an appropriations subcommittee budget hearing. Rogers questioned the choice of Joseph Clancy, a 27-year veteran of the Secret Service, as its director, citing an independent panel’s recommendation that the new director be picked from outside the agency, which it described as insular. Johnson said he had confidence in Clancy’s ability to reform the agency, saying that, as acting director, he made tough senior personnel decisions affecting people he had known for years.

Twitter launches video streaming app Periscope

Twitter launched a videostreaming app called Periscope on Thursday, just days after reports that it had blocked a rival app called Meerkat. Meerkat relies heavily on Twitter and has become hugely popular in the month since its launch. Twitter’s announcement comes on the same day that Meerkat unveiled a list of investors that included Silicon Valley venture capitalists Greylock Partners and Sound Ventures, Ashton Kutcher’s fund. Meerkat’s new round of funding is widely expected to have raised millions of dollars. The app, which already boasts celebrity users such as talk-show host Jimmy Fallon, lets people stream videos that cannot be rewatched.

Ex-US Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. released from prison

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control is launching an ad campaign warning consumers against the dual use of e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes. E-cigarettes are batterypowered devices that heat a nicotine-laced liquid to produce an inhalable vapor. Nationally, about three in four adult e-cigarette users also smoke cigarettes, the CDC said. “If you only cut down the number of cigarettes you smoke by adding another tobacco product, like e-cigarettes, you still face serious health risks,” the CDC said in a statement. REUTERS

Former U.S. Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. was released from an Alabama prison on Thursday after serving time for misusing about $750,000 in campaign funds on luxuries including fur capes and a Rolex watch, local media reported. Jackson, a former Illinois lawmaker and the son of civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson, spent roughly half of the 30-month sentence he received in August 2013 behind bars.

There’s no lack of media coverage on Israel, the Middle East’s sole democracy with civil rights and a free press. What is lacking is objective coverage. This tiny Jewish nation, the size of New Jersey, with less than eight million people, a quarter of them non-Jewish, generally receives inaccurate, harsh, even hostile coverage from the world’s press.

The Jewish News Service (JNS.org) was created to correct that. Our weekly reporting, including exclusive distribution rights for Israel Hayom, Israel’s most popular daily, now appears in 31 Jewish weeklies. Aviation analysis. ‘Replacing pilots with robots is not a solution’ According to information gathered from the black box recorder, the Germanwings co-pilot, 28-year-old Andreas Lubitz, intentionally killed 150 passengers in an Alps crash. German media report he had 630 flight hours, joined the budget airline in September 2013 and passed all psychological tests prior to starting work. Metro spoke with Ronan Hubert, an expert in aviation accidentology and specialist in psychological preparedness for mass disaster at the Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives. What is the mindset and psychology of a pilot? Of course, they are under a lot of stress and pressure. They have to deal with the weather, thunderstorms, etc. But there is no particular problem that we have seen during the last decades. It is the first suicide that we have

at a European company. What indicates that a pilot wants to commit suicide? It’s really difficult to say because it happens with normal people every day. A pilot wakes up in the morning, everything seems to be all right, and during the day, he suddenly decides to commit suicide. We do not know for which reason, except if he leaves a message. What’s the difference between suicide and a terrorism act when it’s committed onboard? When a pilot decides to commit suicide, that’s true, he kills all the people who are in the aircraft. But these two things, in my point of view, cannot be compared because the motivation is completely different. DMITRY BELYAEV, METRO WORLD NEWS

Pilot. German police were searching his home for evidence that might offer some explanation. A young German co-pilot locked himself alone in the cockpit of Germanwings flight 9525 and set it on course to crash into an Alpine mountain, killing all 150 people onboard including himself, prosecutors said on Thursday. French prosecutors offered no motive for why 28-year-old Andreas Lubitz apparently took the controls of the Airbus A320, locked the captain out of the cockpit and deliberately set it veering down from its cruising altitude at 3,000 feet per minute. According to Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin, Lubitz acted “for a reason we cannot fathom right now but which looks like intent to destroy this aircraft.” Setting the plane’s controls for rapid descent was an act

that “could only have been voluntary,” Robin said. “He had ... no reason to stop the pilot-incommand from coming back into the cockpit. He had no reason to refuse to answer to the air controller who was alerting him on the loss of altitude.” The captain, who had stepped out of the cockpit, probably to use the toilet, tried to force his way back in. “You can hear banging to try to smash the door down,” Robin said. Describing sound recordings from one of the plane’s black boxes, Robin said most of the passengers would not have been aware of their fate until the very end. REUTERS Quoted

“Only toward the end do you hear screams ... and bear in mind that death would have been instantaneous. ... The aircraft was literally smashed to bits.” Brice Robin

Clear your DVRs: Spring is here What shows are worth staying in for this television season. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

Just because the weather is (hopefully) warming up doesn’t mean you should leave all your TV friends behind for every warmweather happy hour. Plus, for all the shows you’ve had to say farewell to, there’s a whole new batch of shows to fall in love with. We went ahead and made your TV to-do list.

The Big Weekends For mysterious reasons, the TV powers that be have jammed a ton of blockbuster premieres into two weekends in April. Here’s what to clear your schedules for:

April 3-5

April 10-12

What’s new

No, we’re not talking about the Backstreet Boys documentary on VH1 (though, of course, you can watch that, too, at 9 p.m. on Friday). The final season of “Mad Men” premieres on Sunday, so dust off your whiskey glasses (10 p.m., AMC). But first, your favorite timetraveling Scottish lovers are back on “Outlander” on Saturday (9 p.m., Starz), and on Sunday, catch the PBS adaptation of the historical novel “Wolf Hall,” starring Damian Lewis of “Homeland” (11 p.m., PBS).

Start your weekend with six-pack abs and crime fighting with Netflix’s new “Daredevil” superhero series, starring Charlie Cox, which premieres on Friday. On Sunday, it’s HBO’s unstoppable fantasy epic “Game of Thrones,” premiering at 9 p.m. — which limbs and lives will be lost this year? Sunday also features the beginning of the final season of “Nurse Jackie” (9 p.m., Showtime) and the return of your favorite D.C. dealmakers on “Veep” (10:30 p.m.,

If you’re looking for something new to fill up your DVR (assuming HBO hasn’t totally wiped it out), try “The Messengers,” about a group who dies after an object strikes Earth, then returns to life with mysterious powers. And it’s on the CW, so everyone is very good-looking. (Friday, April 17, 9 p.m.) If you’re not the CW type, you can also try “Happyish” on Showtime, which was initially supposed to star Philip Seymour Hoffman. Now with Steve Coogan, the show follows an advertising executive trying to cope with suddenly having a 25-year-old boss. The criminally underrated Kathryn Hahn also appears, as does Bradley Whitford. (Sunday, April 26, 9:30 p.m.) Are you ready to trust M. Night Shyamalan again? The “Sixth Sense” director heads to TV with “Wayward Pines,” a “Twilight Zone”-type show about a man (Matt Dillon) who finds himself trapped in the eerie titular town. (Thursday, May 14, at 9 p.m.)

Also returning Catch the third-season premiere of clone drama “Orphan Black” on Saturday, April 18, at 10 p.m. on BBC America. You can start having more sadly comic “Louie” adventures Thursday, April 9, at 10:30 p.m. on FX, and “Inside

Amy Schumer” will be back with more sketches and stand-up April 21 on Comedy Central (time TBD). And “Hannibal” fans, we didn’t forget you: The show returns to impress (and gross out) on Thursday, June 4, at 10 p.m. on NBC.

Joking with Ferrell and Hart The “Get Hard” stars try to crack us up.

“We were never butting heads in terms of comedy style or whatever.”

NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart have made names for themselves for being hilarious onscreen, but can they be funny on paper? We sat down to chat with the “Get Hard” stars to find out. You be the judge.

Kevin, when are we going to get a movie where somebody’s helping you out with something? HART: That’s tough, man. I like to be in charge. Me and Denzel have this thing about being in charge. I’m talking about doing “Equalizer,” the next one. “Equalizer: Part 2.” FERRELL: I love it. HART: “Re-equalized” is

what they call it. It’s called “Equal Plus Equal.” FERRELL: You’re not going to get any argument from me. HART: No, you know what? I’ve started out in a place with characters where it was constantly reacting, reacting, reacting. And now it’s in a place where the characters are a little bit more grounded and relatable. If this pattern continues, of course I think you’ll see it flop.

He’s all right, I guess. HART: Well, in this movie, I think he could’ve been better, but at this point you take what you can. FERRELL: I did not give my best effort; I’m not going to lie. HART: Every day, Will showed up and was like, “I don’t know about you, but I’m here for the check.” That’s what he would say, every day.

FERRELL: I kept checking to make sure I was going to make the Pelicans game. Because we shot in New Orleans. But we were never butting heads in terms of comedy style or whatever. HART: Well, there was the one time when you were like, “I’m going to my f—ing trailer. Kevin’s up seven to nothing.” FERRELL: I count the lines. I’ll go through a script, and I’ll count the lines. I told Kevin first thing, “Hey, we’re going to have a great time, but I have counted the lines, and I have 30 more lines than you, and I feel good about that.”

The indie horror ‘It Follows’ is more than just monstrously terrifying MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Nineteen-year-old Jay (Maika Monroe) sleeps with the guy she’s been seeing. Only afterward does he reveal that he’s passed on a mysterious, unexplainable curse in which, every now and then, out of nowhere, she will be pursued by a zombie-like person. This monster, which changes from person to person, is easy to evade but will never stop, and if you’re caught, you’re dead. The lowdown: Many horror films have equated sex with death. But the characters in “It Follows aren’t the bedhopping horndogs of old slasher entries. And just as writer-director David Robert Mitchell doesn’t get tied up in explanations — there’s never, ever a reason given for what’s happening — he also lets the curse stand as

an open metaphor. The academic is better off seizing at little ideas — as a fear of sex, yes, but also as a metaphor for the transition from carefree youth into more responsible, scary adulthood. Perhaps more importantly, “It Follows is actually, truly terrifying — a relentless working of the nerves done

with techniques cribbed from the avant-garde. Often times Mitchell just lets long takes play out, with placid, normal frames punctuated by one person slowly, calmly, freakily walking towards Jay. Soon we’re trained to scan every inch of the frame, as though it were a scary “Where’s Waldo? page. Other times, Mitch-

ell throws us even more off with circular pans. And sometimes, he’ll simply play with pace. When they’re not being hunted, the teens are just like the ones in Mitchell’s “American Graffiti-esque debut, “The Myth of the American Sleepover: normal, quiet kids who just hang. He’ll let these scenes go on long enough that you may forget this is a horror movie at all. And then, soon as you’re relaxed, a zombie-like person will up and trod toward the camera, and the hairs on the back of your neck stand upright all over again.

Cruz smart to take a first-hand experience with Obamacare so he can tell a woeful tale

Cruz is a Canadian, not eligible for becoming President of the United States

Cruz applying for Obamacare. Ted Cruz is a very smart man, as has been reported in the pages of Metro. By applying for Obamacare, he can look at train wreck close up and personal. You can bet his campaign will contain anecdotes about how bad Obamacare really is from first-hand experience. I find it interesting that Holman suggests that Cruz should opt for COBRA and not “burden the taxpayers with his health insurance costs.” That’s the real story of Obamacare.

Re: ‘Ted Cruz should stick with his principles and chose COBRA, not Obamacare’ (Metro, March 26) Letter writer Gregory Holman misses the point of Sen. Ted

comes a Republican, with strong right-wing credentials who is seeking the highest office in the land, born a Canadian citizen. I speak of course, of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. Of course he is going to expect federal funding for his campaign. How does one alter their birthplace? KEN BONACCI, VIA EMAIL

Hypocrisy abounds this election season, and we have only begun. Republicans spent a year trying to discredit Barack Obama as President of the United States based on his alleged birthplace being other than in America. Now, along

VICTORINO IS RIGHT, SOX SHOULD GO AFTER HAMELS Amidst all the shouting and name calling, one thing seems to be overlooked in the upcoming “Shane Victorino vs. Boston sports media” fight at WrestleMania. Victorino is right. The Red Sox need an ace. In fact, they might also need a closer. Those are two of the most important pieces in building a championship ball club. And that’s what this is all about here in Boston, a championship. In Major League Baseball, it’s a fact that you won’t win a World Series without dominant starting pitching. Sure, you just might happen to find a reliable closer somewhere in your pitching arsenal — keep an eye on Koji Uehara and his health issues -— but one thing we know for sure is that, as of March 27, 2015, the Boston Red Sox are without an ace. The current rotation can customize as many T-shirts as they want. There isn’t one “ace” in the deck. At least, not one that we know of right now. I believe hope is the greatest thing in the world. But it’s not the best option for a big-league ball club that has plenty of prospects to dangle for a trade that would land the Red Sox a dominant starter. Because right now, all we have with this Red Sox rotation is hope. And having a “rotation of hope” is not an ideal situation for a big-market team.

Opinion

DANNY PICARD

SPORTS

@DANNYPICARD “The Danny Picard Show” airs every weekday at DannyPicard.com. Danny can also be heard on WEEI 93.7 FM and seen on CSNNE.

Clay Buchholz is hoping to prove the doubters wrong. Rick Porcello is hoping to have a breakout season on his new one-year contract. Justin Masterson is hoping to have a bounce-back year under his new one-year contract. The Red Sox are hoping that Wade Miley was worth trading away their possible closer-of-thefuture in Rubby De La Rosa. And Joe Kelly is hoping that his improbable prediction of winning this year’s AL Cy Young comes somewhere close to that result.

NBA

The Phillies’ asking price for lefty ace Cole Hamels is said to be sky-high. / GETTY IMAGES

Meanwhile, Cole Hamels wants to play for a contender. And even if Victorino was subtly calling for Mookie Betts to be traded when he told the Philadelphia Daily News this week that he’d “love” to see Hamels in a Red Sox uniform, the man isn’t talking crazy. Not when he goes on the

record to acknowledge that there’s a difference between a “prospect” and an “established” player. The Red Sox need an ace. And even if it takes trading a highly touted prospect in order to land a dominant starting pitcher, I’ll make that move any day of the week.

Because it works. Just ask Hanley Ramirez, who was traded for Josh Beckett back in November 2005. It resulted in a Red Sox World Series title in 2007. So, like him or not, Victorino is right. And I’d love to see Hamels in a Red Sox uniform, too.

NCAA

March Madness field narrows

3

A look at Friday’s slate of NCAA Sweet 16 games:

eight rebounds against North Dakota State in Gonzaga’s opener then 24 points and seven rebounds versus the Hawkeyes.

much-deserved 71-68 victory. In their only other previous meeting this season on Valentine’s Day, NC State won 74-65 at Louisville.

No. 2 Gonzaga (-8.5 points) vs. No. 11 UCLA (7:15 p.m., CBS) Let’s be honest, the Bruins (2213) are lucky to be here. They had arguably the easiest road after winning on a horrific goaltending call vs. SMU then faced an overmatched UAB squad. Many doubted the Bulldogs (34-2) but they looked great in their 87-68 destruction of Iowa on Sunday. Kentucky transfer junior forward Kyle Wiltjer put up 23 points and

No. 4 Louisville (-3 points) vs. No. 8 NC State (7:37 p.m., TBS) Nobody expected these ACC rivals to be here after the Cardinals (26-8) held off UC Irvine 57-55 and the Wolfpack (22-13) beat LSU 66-65 on a buzzer-beater in their respective openers. They’ve earned it though as Louisville completely shut down Northern Iowa 66-53 and NC State sent the first No. 1-seed, Villanova, home with a

No. 1 Duke (-5.5 points) vs. No. 5 Utah (9:45 p.m., CBS) The Blue Devils (31-4) rolled through the first two rounds but also played Robert Morris and a weaker than usual San Diego State team. This is the first Sweet 16 in 10 years for the Utes (26-8), but this team is legit. There should be a great battle between freshmen centers as Duke’s Jahlil Okafor (47 points, 9 rebounds, 5 blocks in the tournament battles Utah’s Jakob Poeltl (30

JAHLIL OKAFOR GETTY IMAGES

points, 9 rebounds, 6 blocks in the tournament). No. 3 Oklahoma vs. No. 7 Michigan State (-2 points) (10:07 p.m., TBS) The Sweet 16 wraps up with another intriguing matchup. Coming into the tourney, this was thought to be one of the worst editions of the Spartans (25-11) in years, so naturally they are in their fourth straight Sweet 16. He never seems to get any credit but Lon Kruger can coach, as evidenced by the fact that the Sooners are the fourth different school (Kansas State, Florida, UNLV) that he has taken to the Sweet 16. RICH SLATE

Celtics seek quick rebound The Celtics took a step back in their quest to land an Eastern Conference playoff spot, losing 93-86 Wednesday at home to Miami. Thankfully for the C’s, they get immediate relief in the form of the lowly New York Knicks — who they’ll face Friday (7:30 p.m., CSNNE) at Madison Square Garden. New York (14-58) owns the worst record in the NBA. The Celtics, now 31-40 on the season, will come back home after the Knicks game to host former head coach Doc Rivers and the Clippers on Sunday (6 p.m., CSNNE).
