MBTA

Transportation officials to develop snow schedules for next winter After improvising through much of the historically harsh February storms, the MBTA plans to develop reduced-trip snow schedules for next year and to purchase snow-clearing equipment, officials said after an oversight hearing Monday. Those ideas came about through a peer-review process with transit officials from New York, New Jersey, Toronto, Philadelphia and Chicago, other cities that face challenges from snow and cold. Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack said the MBTA has to balance between giving people a way to get around during bad weather conditions, when motorists are often discouraged from driving, and giving workers a chance to perform maintenance to protect equipment. “We were trying to make those balancing decisions in real-time under real pressure,” Pollack said, referring to high-level discussions this winter. “That’s not the optimum way to do that. Now we have the advantage of learning from what we did and didn’t do right.” The proposed schedules for extreme conditions would be offered for public comment before going into effect, and he said the T would purchase dieselpowered equipment that would be able to run on the lines when the electrified third-rail is down. Pollack said the T needs “special purpose” equipment for snow removal and other tasks, rather than relying on regular subway cars. SHNS

Few answers in fatal shooting in Dorchester Investigation. Police were looking for suspects in connection with a fire and deadly shooting Tuesday. Investigators are scrambling for answers after a man was found shot to death on the ground floor of a Dorchester tripledecker Tuesday. A woman was injured in the shooting, a bullet grazing her head, according to those on the scene. At some point, a small fire started in one of the kitchens of the beige three-story home located at 332 Harvard Street. The fire and the shooting are believed to be linked. Arson and homicide investigators were both on the scene early Tuesday afternoon. First responders arrived to the scene around 11:30 a.m. The female was transferred

to Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Her condition was not immediately clear. There were no arrests as of Tuesday afternoon. The identity of the man killed has not yet been released. A police spokeswoman said the matter was still under investigation and offered no further details. “There are a lot of unknowns here,” Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans said during a briefing at the scene. “A woman came running out indicating she had been shot and her husband was inside also on the first floor who had been shot.” The woman was carrying a baby, Evans said. “The baby’s obviously safe, which was our main concern,” he said. Harvard Street was closed to through traffic early Tuesday afternoon. A woman wrapped in a blanket cried near the yellow police tape, but declined to speak about the incident. It was unclear how many people

Police at the scene suggested residents of the building might have to wait until Wednesday before they are allowed back into their homes. Alberto Garcia, a 41-year-old Dorchester resident, said he didn’t hear the shots, but saw the smoke. Garcia works as a driver for Happy Days, an elderly care facility located about a block down the street from

He believed the same people who shot the man and woman set the fire. “When the police started showing up we assumed it was a fight,” he said. “It caught us by surprise. Anti-gun billboard coming down Fenway. The iconic “Stop Handgun Violence” sign could be taken down some time within the next two months. The large and iconic anti-gun violence billboard that has overlooked the Mass Pike near Fenway for 20 years is coming down. The billboard, which is 252 feet long by 20 feet tall, is affixed to a Lansdowne Street garage. Developer John Rosenthal, co-founder of the Stop Handgun Violence, which is the group behind the billboard, sold that garage to the Boston Red Sox two years ago. The team’s ownership gave him a twoyear lease that allowed him to keep the billboard on the structure. That lease term is up. Rosenthal said the sign could be taken down anytime in the next two months. “There isn’t a definite timeline,” he said. Rosenthal said he sold the building because the deal “made sense and we had a very willing buyer.” He believes the billboard, which currently has a message advocating for an assault weapons ban and a running counter of the number of Americans killed by gun violence since the Sandy Hook massacre in December 2012, is the largest horizontal billboard in the country. “It’ll be sad to see the huge billboard come down after all these years, but thanks to our new creative team and outdoor advertising company partners, this campaign will continue and our message will live on and be seen by more people in many new locations,” said John Rosenthal, co-founder of Stop Handgun Violence and president of Meredith Management. He added: “Over the last

Indiana governor vows to ‘fix’ law

Patients of New England Eye Center find confidence in knowing we offer experience you can trust and technology you can rely on. NASA-Approved LASIK - Our all-laser, bladeless LASIK at New England Eye Center has greatly improved results and helped take the fear out of having LASIK. The vast majority of our LASIK and PRK patients now achieve 20/20 vision at distance without glasses or contact lenses. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots. Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lens-like device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time.

Pence faced massive pressure from businesses over the bill, which passed with an overwhelming majority in the state’s legislature. Rock band Wilco canceled a show in Indianapolis and Democratic governors from both coasts, joined by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, banned official travel to Indiana. Self-driving automobile. Honda to test prototypes at former US naval base Honda Motor Co. has joined Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz in testing self-driving vehicles and technologies on private roads at a former U.S. naval facility outside San Francisco, the Japanese automaker said Tuesday. Honda also is a partner in the University of Michigan’s Mobility Transformation Center, which plans to open a similar testing facility called Mcity this summer in Ann Arbor. Honda said it will test prototype versions of its Acura RLX sedan, fitted with sensors and cameras that could be used on future self-driving vehicles. The former naval base has 20 miles of paved roads and a variety of buildings and will not be open to the public. Honda and Mercedes are using the former Concord Naval Weapons Station to test and develop advanced driver-assistance technologies to improve safety. Lufthansa flight school knew pilot’s depression Crash. The new findings raise questions about the screening process for Lufthansa pilots. The German pilot who crashed a plane in the French Alps last week, killing 150 people, told officials at a Lufthansa training school in 2009 that he had gone through a period of severe depression, the airline said on Tuesday. The statement is potentially damaging for the airline

and its CEO Carsten Spohr, who told reporters last week that the carrier knew of no reason why 27-year-old Andreas Lubitz might deliberately crash a plane. The fact that Lufthansa officials were aware that Lubitz suffered from depression raises questions about its screening process for pilots as it faces the threat of legal action from relatives of the victims. Lufthansa said Lubitz broke off his pilot training for a period of several months but then passed medical checks confirming his fitness to fly.

Insurers

$300M

Lufthansa was already facing unlimited liability for damages in the crash, lawyers have said, and has told its insurers to set aside $300 million to deal with claims, recovery costs and the loss of the aircraft.

When Lubitz resumed training in 2009, he provided the flight school with medical documents showing that he had gone through a “previous episode of severe depression, Lufthansa said, citing emailed correspondence between Lubitz and the flight

school. Dusseldorf state prosecutors said on Monday Lubitz had been treated for suicidal tendencies before getting his pilot’s license. Last week, they found torn-up sick notes showing that Lubitz was suffering from an illness that should have grounded him. Germanwings said it had not received a sick note from Lubitz for the day of the crash. Lubitz had a valid medical certificate at the time of the crash of the Airbus A320 operated by its budget unit, Lufthansa added. REUTERS

And still, I get carded constantly,” he tells Variety. “My daughter hates it because sometimes people have thought I’m her brother, and she’s freaked out by that.” I’m sure she’s also not so hot on him saying things like this to a major trade publication, but hey, if you can’t mortify your 15-year-old daughter in print, what’s the point of being famous? Kit Harington is sick of being objectified It’s so hard for men in Hollywood, isn’t it? All this attention paid just to your looks, when no one bothers to find out what’s really going on inside. At least that’s how it’s been for “Game of Thrones” star Kit Harington, who plays hunky — see? even I’m doing it — Jon Snow on the HBO series. “I’m in a successful TV show in a kind of leading man way, and it can sometimes feel like your art is being put to one side for your sex appeal. And I don’t like that,” he tells Page Six. “To always be put on a pedestal as a hunk is slightly

demeaning. It really is, and it’s in the same way as it is for women. When an actor is seen only for her physical beauty, it can be quite offensive.” I mean, hey, he can’t help that he’s attractive, right? So please, if you get a chance to speak with Harington, do not point out that he’s really, really, ridiculously goodlooking, OK? Because he’s had enough of it. “In this position you get asked a lot, ‘Do you like being a heartthrob? Do you like being a hunk?’” he adds. “Well, my answer is, ‘That’s not what I got into it for.’”

CULTURE

When we caught up with British soul singer Jessie Ware in London, we couldn’t help but ask about the obvious sexual innuendo in her song “Champagne Kisses.” So is she really talking about fellatio? Ware would only blush, but her laugh said it all. “I did think to change the title, but then I just thought, ‘Sod it,’” she says. With that being just one of

the sexual innuendos on her album, you’d think she’d shy away from sharing her music with her mom, but Ware says her mom is more concerned with her style than her music. “She’s usually like, ‘Why aren’t you wearing red lipstick?’ She’s very positive, but she wants me to be wearing my red lipstick.” RICHARD PECKETT / MWN

Breakthrough in music: MisterWives Interview. The band has opened for Twenty One Pilots and Bleachers. Now they’re headlining a sold-out tour. A lot of bands pay their dues spending years playing small venues before anything major happens. But for MisterWives, the ascent has been quick. The band, composed of Mandy Lee, Etienne Bowler, William Hehir, Marc Campbell, Jesse Blum and Mike Murphy, has only been together two years and already has a song on the chart (“Reflections”) and their first headlining tour is completely sold out. We chat with the misters of MisterWives about their dizzying rise: It’s crazy how fast things have happened for you guys. Campbell: I’m from Scotland,

and my cousins will tell me they heard “Reflections” at H&M [back home]. Blum: People come to the shows and know all the words, not just the single. We have really cool fans. They’re people that I actually like. You always hope that happens. Your song “Vagabond” is the “Finding Carter” theme song on MTV. How did that happen? Blum: MTV just approached us and asked if they could use the song. It’s funny, when we were on tour opening for Bleachers, people asked us if we were covering it. We were like, “No, this is our song!” What is the last thing you Googled? Campbell: For me, it was the address of the venue where our show is. Blum: The last things I Googled were “famous trumpet players in Denver” and “Phil Spector.” Hehir: The last thing I Googled was “what’s the largest snake

3 tips for finding your Cape dream home You might have to be prepared to do some big spending to find the right place. LINDA CLARKE @MetroBOS

letters@metro.us

What with an unseasonably cold start to spring, it’s hard to believe vacation time is just around the corner. But if you want to spend this summer in your own Cape Cod home, and buy before the almost certain federal interest rate hike, it’s time to get moving. If a seasonal beachfront bespoke property is what you want, Heritage Sands in Dennis Port has 29 cottages in Phase 2 of a three-part construction. You get to choose

layouts, fittings and finishes, and the developer, CapeBuilt Development, completes the work. Prices are not too crazy either: One-bedroom homes start at under $400,000. Generally, though, finding a dream Cape home right now could be a nightmare. “This spring really is a seller’s market,” says Farrah DiPietro, a sales associate for Heritage Sands, who knows Cape Cod’s general real estate market well. “Particularly first-time buyers looking in the $200$300,000 range, they’re having a tough time. It’s slim pickings and the nice homes are going quickly.” Don’t even think about a waterfront property — unless you’re loaded. “They are in high demand,” she says. “The Cape is becoming more exclusive. I lived here all my life, but spent four years in

Coming back and seeing the difference in pricing was astounding.” The expected federal interest rate hike, which many are predicting by the end of the year, is also driving sales: “We’re getting calls from people wanting to buy at Heritage Sands that same day and lock into the current low rate.” DiPietro gives us some tips for snagging a Cape Cod dream home

Keep office supplies in check

“My biggest tip for anyone looking to make over or organize a space is to add special touches that will keep you motivated to maintain all of that hard work,” says Jones. She lines drawers with decorative paper (“for a happy surprise each time you reach for a pen”) and surrounds herself with personal items. “Your favorite Instagram moments can be pinned up alongside your daily ‘to do’ list on the memo board above your desk,” she says.

“I use acrylic organizers from the beauty department to store my office supplies,” says Jones. And it’s not just because they’re way more glam than anything at Staples. “You can see everything inside, and it saves you time from rummaging around, looking for things.” Another cool tip: the expert uses a tall vase to store rolls of paper. “When organizing, you don’t always have to use pieces for their intended use — get creative,” she says.

Say so long to a messy, cluttered and drab office. Here are some tips to increase productivity without compromising style. TINA CHADHA @TinaatMetro

tina.chadha@metro.us

Face it, we spend most of our time sitting behind a desk at work or in front of a computer at home. So that little office nook deserves some design attention. And it needs to be functional, too. (No one has five minutes to waste looking for a renegade Post-It pad.) To help, IHeartOrganizing’s Jennifer Jones partnered with HomeGoods to create her ideal office. We take notes.

How to organize your work space Make the right choice the ďŹ rst time At East Cambridge Savings Bank we know that one size does NOT ďŹ t all.

Add some color Don’t stare at a soulless, gray cube wall. “Wallpaper — and even stencils — can get expensive, so an easy way to transform the room is to substitute gift wrap for wallpaper,â€? says Jones. For this room she created for HomeGoods, the expert put up a couple of rolls of pretty pink paper with doublesided tape. “When you’re ready to try something new, you can easily pull it down and try a dierent print,â€? she says.

That’s why we offer a variety of mortgage choices. Plus, right now, enjoy a low ARM or great 30-year ďŹ xed rate for ďŹ rst time home buyers.

sanctions are not a “strategy that has failed in the past.” Rather, they are damaging the Iranian economy and are the only reason the Iranians are negotiating. Congress is extremely concerned that the Obama administration, which does whatever it wants, will negotiate a bad deal, which only delays and doesn’t prevent Iran’s nuclear weapons capability. The sanctions should be continued until the Iranian regime collapses or offers a deal that truly guarantees the elimination of their nuclear threat.

Boston’s new boy wonder NBA. Brad Stevens has a knack for getting his teams to overachieve. Brad Stevens was up late the night of March 21, 2015. Though he’s usually up watching game film anyway, Stevens was watching another basketball game on this night: Butler vs. Notre Dame. Formerly the head coach at Butler before signing a six-year deal with the Celtics in 2013, Stevens took his Bulldogs to back-to-back NCAA title games in 2010 and 2011 as a No. 5 seed and No. 8 seed, respectively. It appears as though Stevens has taken that magic with him to Boston, where the Celtics are playing their best basketball of Stevens’ tenure with the team. With their win over the Hornets on Monday, the C’s improved to 33-41 and finished

Brad Stevens’ career NBA record is well below .500 but there’s no doubt the young coach is overachieving once again. / GETTY IMAGES

the month of March 10-8 — their second straight winning month. What is it about Stevens this time of year? Perhaps it’s his level-headedness and attention to detail that rubs off on his players by this point in the season. “I’m still getting to know this group,” Stevens said of his Celtics. “Obviously I was with 13 groups with Butler. Our better teams got better as the year went on, and practices became better — which is really unique. And the best teams, the teams that ended up going as far as the Final Four, were laserfocused. And when I say that, I mean they never missed something they could control ever. The biggest thing as you move forward in those tournaments is that you get better.” The final stretch of games for Boston this season isn’t quite a tournament — but it’s nearly as important, with six

teams fighting for three spots. And just like sets of tournament games are played with just one day in-between games, rarely are there long breaks in the NBA. “He’s just a smart basketball coach,” Jared Sullinger said. “He’s one of those guys if you give him enough time to prepare for a game he’s going to overdo it and at the same time he’s going to have the players so engaged to the game of basketball they’re always going to be ready to play at a certain time. I think this kind of represents March Madness for him. I think that’s where he’s his best. Where you have a game on Friday and turn around and have a game on Sunday, that’s pretty much the NBA. He was always prepared for every NCAA game.” JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us
