Suspect due in court for duffel bag dismemberment Cambridge. Details are expected Monday. Authorities have arrested a suspect this weekend in connection with human remains found inside a duffel bag in Cambridge, according to the Middlesex district attorney’s office. The remains were found Saturday. The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned in Cambridge District Court on Monday, at which time the defendant’s name will be released. There, the suspect will face charges of accessory after the fact to assault and battery, causing serious bodily injury and improper disposal of a body. The remains have been identified, but the victim’s name is being withheld as police look for the next of kin. The investigation, said Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, continues to be active as Cambridge detectives and state police are continuing to gather
information to “determine the circumstances which led to the discovery.” Someone reported a suspicious item at Loughery Way, a pedestrian walkway near 225 Binney and 6th streets in Cambridge on Saturday morning. There, police found human remains in a duffel bag. Surveillance video led police inside a building, where body parts were also found. That video will not be released until the case is resolved, according to the DA. “We’re confident that this was not a random act and there is no threat to the public’s safety as a suspect has been taken into custody,” said Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert Haas. “To provide additional assurance and peace of mind, our officers plan on going door-todoor to speak directly with any neighboring residents to address any questions or concerns they may have.” DANNY MCDONALD @DMacCash daniel.mcdonald@metro.us

Boston Beer — the makers of Samuel Adams — are no longer the country’s biggest craft brewer, according to the Brewers Association. Based on beer sales volume, Pennsylvania’s D.G. Yuengling & Son, which makes — you guessed it — Yuengling, knocked Boston Beer off the top spot, according to a new ranking based on last year’s beer sales volume released by the association this week. Boston Beer is now No. 2, followed by Sierra Nevada
Brewing. Until now, Boston Beer had been on top for at least the past eight years. “The companies on this list include the vanguard of the craft industry,” said Bart Watson, chief economist at the Brewers Association. “They are exposing new beer lovers to craft, opening new markets and creating opportunities for the entire category. As they continue to grow, so will the availability of innovative and high-quality beers produced for all to enjoy.”
USA Today reported that Yuengling surpassed Boston Beer’s sales despite the local company’s shipment of “20 percent more barrels than in 2013.” CNBC reports a rule change allowed Yuengling to assume the top post. Previously, the company was not considered to be a craft brewer by the association— a nonprofit trade organization — because of its use of ingredients such as corn and rice in its beer. During the 16 days of testimony, the 12 jurors and six alternates heard gripping, and sometimes graphic, accounts of how the twin pressure-cooker bombs ripped through the crowd at the marathon, causing 17 people to lose limbs. State Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack acknowledged the T had lackluster contingency plans to deal with the nightmarish winter that disrupted daily commutes for several weeks. The MBTA had an insular mindset and failed to adequately study best practices with other transit agencies, Pollack said during an appearance on “Keller @ Large” that aired Sunday morning. The thinking was, she said, that standard T procedures had survived past winters, meaning such protocols would be able to carry the agency through any inclement weather. “When the same thing stopped working in February, there wasn’t much of a Plan B,” she said. Commuter frustration was palpable this winter when a record-setting 8 feet of snow was dumped on Boston in a little more than a month. The MBTA couldn’t handle the inclement weather. Third rails froze. Mechanical problems paralyzed subway cars.
Toughening up the T
If the public is going to hold Gov. Charlie Baker accountable for fixing the T’s woes, Pollack said, “then we need to give him and me enough power to make a difference.” •
It remains to be seen how the board will vote on “tougher issues,” she said.
Delays and cancellations for the T and commuter rail were commonplace. She acknowledged that the T “has a reputation even within the transit industry for being a little bit insular.” Pollack said changes to how the T operates “in pretty much everything they do” are necessary. The way the T is structured, with a general manager appointed by the state Department of Transportation’s board — not the governor nor the transportation secretary — it is “not a perfect governance system.” DANNY MCDONALD

Lovin’ that dirty water As temperatures in the city begin to rise and the record-breaking amount of snow begins to melt, everyone wants to spend a little more time exploring. Living in one of the oldest, culturally rich and most walkable cities in America has some serious advantages, and to say you’re bored on a sunny day is just absurd. There are plenty of things for Bostonians to do, some even coming at marginally low prices, and many great for the whole family. Here are our top picks. SHAPLEIGH WEBSTER

Boston was recently named one of the most walkable cities in America, and for good reason. So many sights are accessible by foot, and a Boston By Foot tour is a great way to explore if you don’t know where to start. There are many different tours to choose from, and tickets are generally under $20. Visit BostonByFoot.org.
Established in 1877, the swan boats are just another piece to the historic puzzle that is Boston. Tickets are sold on the boat dock and are $3.50 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2 for kids.
Hit one out of the park As America’s oldest ballpark, Fenway is definitely worth a peek. With much more to do than meets the eye, a park tour is the perfect way to spend a spring day. Tours run daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and depart at the top of the hour. Tickets start at $18 for adults, $17 for seniors and $12 for kids, students and military.

Government official’s son was among the gunmen Prayers. Pope Francis spoke out against the attack in his Easter Sunday service. The son of a Kenyan government official was one of the masked gunmen who killed nearly 150 people at a university last week, the interior ministry said on Sunday, as Kenyan churches hired armed guards to protect their Easter congregations. At one church in the Indian Ocean port city of Mombasa, worshippers were evacuated and a bomb disposal unit deployed due to a suspicious vehicle parked outside the church. Police took it away for further examination. Pope Francis decried Thursday’s attack during his Easter Sunday service, praying for those killed by Islamist gunmen who hunted down Christians while sparing Muslims. Interior Ministry spokesman Mwenda Njoka said Abdirahim Abdullahi was one of four gunmen who stormed the college campus in Garissa, some 120 miles from the Somali border. An ethnic Somali with Kenyan nationality, his father is a government official in the northern Mandera county bordering Somalia, he said. “The father had reported to security agents that his son had disappeared from home... and was helping the police try to trace his son by the time the Garissa terror attack happened, Njoka told Reuters in a text message. President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday said the planners and financiers of Islamist attacks were “deeply embedded within Kenyan communities

Netanyahu presses US to seek better deal on Iran
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged the United States on Sunday to seek a better deal to curb Iran’s nuclear program and said he would press American lawmakers not to give Tehran “a free path to the bomb.” Netanyahu said he has spoken with both Democrats and Republicans in Congress — nearly two thirds of House of Representatives members and a similar number in the U.S. Senate — about the Iran nuclear issue. The Israeli prime minister has been strongly critical of the framework agreement struck on Thursday between world powers and Iran, say-
ing it threatens the survival of Israel. In appearances on U.S. television on Sunday, Netanyahu did not repeat his assertion on Friday that any final agreement should include a commitment by Iran recognizing Israel’s right to exist. “This is not a partisan issue. This is not solely an Israeli issue,” Netanyahu said of the interim nuclear agreement, speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union” program. “This is a world issue because everyone is going to be threatened by the preeminent terrorist state of our time, keeping the infrastructure to produce not one nuclear bomb but many, many nuclear bombs down the line.” REUTERS

Hundreds of people in the north of the main Philippine island of Luzon left evacuation centers and returned home on Sunday after a typhoon weakened significantly as it made landfall, although officials still warned of heavy rain. Once described as super typhoon Maysak as it bore down on the Philippines in recent days, the storm was carrying winds of 35 mph and was rated as a tropical depression as it made landfall on Sunday morning. Tesla Motors said it delivered a record 10,030 cars in the first quarter, a 55 percent increase compared with the number of deliveries in the first quarter of last year. The company said going forward it will publish the number of new car deliveries within three days of quarter end as inaccurate sources of information have sometimes been used by others in publishing the number of vehicle deliveries. LGBT Americans. Boycott Indiana movement over RFRA growing Miley’s war: Outraged by “religious freedom” laws, she orders up her troops. Hup-two-three-four! Huptwo-three-four! Miley Cyrus unleashed her millions of fans over the past 10 days to do battle against so-called “religious freedom” laws that essentially codified discrimination against LGBT Americans. With multiple social media launch sites at General Cyrus’ fingertips, the “Wrecking Ball” singer, declared Armageddon on the “dinosaurs” backing the laws, and pushed all the red buttons. Cyrus sided with the LGBT community, its allies and big business — including WalMart and Apple — in targeting a new Religious Freedom Restoration Act in Indiana, and a strengthening of an old RFRA in Alabama. This past Thursday, the measures in both states were watered down, but remain on the books. Still,

the changes were enough to have elected officials, including New York’s Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, to impose travel bans to Indiana for state employees. While Cyrus can’t be credited for any particularly decisive blow, the 22-yearold, who many kids knew as Disney’s wholesome Hannah Montana, has highlighted what a “furious” former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called a major misstep for the GOP. In a Washington Post oped, “the Governator” accused Republicans behind the RFRAs of neglecting “the next generation of voters.” He echoed Cyrus’ assertion that the RFRAs alienate the 18-to-29 set. “All you have to do is look at the response to Indiana’s law on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit or pretty much wherever young people congregate and discuss what is important to them,” he said.
Pope Francis attends the Easter Mass in Vatican City, Vatican. Tens of thousands of people gathered in Saint Peter’s Square on Sunday morning, despite the cold and the rain, to take part in Solemn Mass with Pope Francis in celebration of Easter. Following the Liturgy, the Holy Father gave the traditional blessing “Urbi et Orbi” — to the city of Rome and to the World. Pope Francis prayed for an end to the persecution of Christians in his Easter Sunday address, commemorating the students massacred by Islamist militants at Garissa University in Kenya. Francis, after saying Mass for thousands of people in a rainy St. Peter’s Square, delivered a mostly somber and grim “Urbi et Orbi” (to the city and the world) message. Attacks on Christians in Africa and the Middle East have been the grim backdrop of all Holy Week ceremonies leading up to Easter. REUTERS

I’m all for these Taraji P. Henson dating rumors
If you had any doubts that “Empire” star Taraji P. Henson had truly arrived, this should quash them. Cookie Lyon herself is now the subject of tabloid dating rumors — specifically about the amorous advances she’s been fielding from Michael Strahan. It all started when Henson stopped by “Live with Kelly and Michael” for a chat, according to Star magazine. “Michael flirted openly with Taraji on camera, but he wasn’t kidding.
Off-camera, he kept asking her, ‘When can I take you out?’” a source says. “Taraji initially brushed off his advances, but Mike told her that he was serious. The two ended up having an intimate dinner that night at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel … and they have more dates on the books.” Well all right, then.

Kelly Clarkson vs. Fox News fat-shaming
4
I realize a lot of stuff that comes out of Fox News is cynically designed to get reactions like this one, but still. Chris Wallace decided to weigh in on the virtues and drawbacks of singer Kelly Clarkson — for some reason — offering, “Kelly Clarkson’s got a lovely voice. She could stay off the deep-dish pizza for a while.” Which is downright un-American, if you ask me. Heck, Wallace even has his own turning against him, as Fox colleague Greta Van Susteren was so incensed she had to blog about it: “This ‘guy snickering’ about her weight is obnoxious,” she wrote. “He should apologize.” In the meantime, I suddenly really, really want some deepdish pizza.
‘Scrubs’ stars out to save pizza-deprived Indiana gay weddings
This might sort of, maybe, make up for the whole “Wish I Was Here” Kickstarter thing. Zach Braff has teamed up with his heterosexual life-partner and former “Scrubs” co-star, Donald Faison, to come to the rescue of any same-sex couples in Indiana put out by the recently adopted Religious Freedom Restoration Act after a local pizzeria made it clear they wouldn’t be catering any gay weddings. Braff posted a photo of himself and Faison piloting a speedboat with the caption, “If you really and truly want pizza for your gay wedding in Indiana … we will make it for you.” Which is great and all, but how they expect to get to Indiana via speedboat is beyond me.

Guys, Beyonce got us a new song for her anniversary Traditionally, seven is the wool or copper anniversary, but not for Beyonce, who apparently thinks of it as the surprise single release anniversary. And lucky us. The singer celebrated seven years of wedded bliss to Jay Z this weekend by teasing a brandnew track, “Die With You,” available exclusively on Tidal, Jay Z’s new streaming music and video service. And I have to say, as a business model for an online music service goes, “I’ve got Beyonce” is a pretty good one.

“Mad Men began its final run of episodes last night. Catch the rest of the final season Sundays at 10 p.m. on AMC. / AMC
Matthew Weiner is moving on Interview. The “Mad Men creator says he still gets stray good ideas for episodes. “Mad Men finished shooting last summer, but creator Matthew Weiner is still not totally used to it being over. But he still has to talk about it for a long time. Weiner is
(in)famous for his no-spoiler policy, meaning we can’t talk about what happens in the back half of the show’s final season, which started its last batch of seven episodes on Sunday. Before we reconvene to discuss its finale, we can talk about its origins, as well as the killer way the first half of the seventh season ended. Even now, do you still get ideas for the show?
Yes. I’ve had ideas recently. I caught myself. I ran into a situation I thought could be in the show. That’s never going to happen again. I always have a piece of paper in my pocket or I call myself on the phone. I’ve learned to take those passing thoughts very seriously. It’s not as delusional as it sounds. But I did stop and not write it down. It was like the show was a phantom limb. Are there forgotten or neglected events or historical moments you were really proud to have included? I like things people have forgotten about, like the computer coming into people’s lives. People were like, “Oh, [in the

first episode with the giant computer in season seven] that’s a ‘2001’ reference. It’s not. It actually happened. And “2001 was already out. “2001 presaged it. Arthur C. Clarke was talking about it, and Kubrick was interested in that — what our relationship is going to be with these machines. By the time [a computer] came to the agency — as Don says, “It’s not symbolic, it’s quite literal. It took over the lunchroom. [Laughs] It replaced human beings. Try being funny
His comedy days You worked on “The Sopranos,â€? but before that, you wrote for sitcoms like “Becker.â€? How did sitcoms inform “Mad Menâ€?? The bar for funny is a lot lower in a drama. When you’re dealing with heavy stu, a very small joke can get a very big laugh, because it’s just a relief and a surprise. But I’ve deďŹ nitely brought a lot of the techniques to the show, and they are sitcom techniques and sitcom ways of doing scenes. ... I have never spoken of sitcoms in disparaging ways. When I stumble upon a “Friendsâ€? episode or a “Seinfeldâ€? episode, I am always ďŹ lled with delight. ... Being funny, I hate to say it, is way more impressive and way harder to do than being dramatic.

Michelle Rodriguez is back behind the wheel of a sweet speed racer for “Furious 7,” in which she reprises her role as Letty, the once-presumed dead girlfriend of Vin Diesel’s Dominic. / UNIVERSAL PICTURES
Interview. The “Furious 7” star talks counterculture, fast cars and getting back into leading roles. I’m sitting with Michelle Rodriguez in a plush RV parked in a wide-open parking lot in East L.A., and we’re supposed to be talking about “Furious 7,” her latest in the fastdriving series. But the setting keeps dragging her thoughts to a completely different overthe-top event: The uber-progressive annual desert festival Burning Man. “This reminds me of Burning Man. My trailers never look this clean,” she says with a laugh. “I’ve been four times.” And you’re going back this year? Oh yeah. It’s hard to describe. I just couldn’t encompass it in a sentence. But be careful. It’s kind of like a great song, you know? When it becomes popular, it gets watered down.
You want to get it before the disrespectful people pop up who really just don’t give a f— about anything but partying.
that. “Sex appeal! You want this!” The curves on those suckers! What the f— happened to the curves?
In the film, you guys show up in Abu Dhabi, each driving a sports car. Can’t you ever carpool? [Laughs] Hell no, man. Obviously, they each need their own ride. It’s like skin, man. Everybody’s got their own. I was so pissed when Ty-Boogie [Tyrese Gibson] got the Bugatti. But I guess my character’s not that flashy anyway. She’s practical.
How much are you thinking about diversifying, maybe trying on some comedy? It’s so crazy! I haven’t been the lead in a movie since “Girl Fight,” and I’m getting older. Before I say au revoir to acting, I’d like to carry something and take the responsibility for once. I’ve held back on so many [offers] because I didn’t like stuff or I was being too picky. I’ve isolated myself from the world for a very long time. I’ll take a chance, you know what I mean, and try something comedic. If it sucks, it sucks. If it’s great, it’s great. I think it’s about time to try something new.
You could pick whatever you wanted to drive. I wish, dude. They always give me whatever American muscle thing they’re sponsoring at the moment. [Laughs] I get the contemporary version of the American car, and Vin gets to play with the oldschool vehicles. I’ve got to say, as far as the car industry goes, I’m not too impressed with American cars these days. I feel like old-school cars from the 1960s, it was all about

Getting old with Ad-Rock Interview. Former Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz returns to acting for “While We’re Young.” Adam Horovitz, perhaps better known as Beastie Boy Ad-Rock, is not the loud bundle of sometimes confrontational energy he seems onstage and onscreen. He’s soft-spoken, friendly yet guarded. That’s not to say he’s not as funny. He’s both funny and serious in Noah Baumbach’s “While
We’re Young,” in which he plays a go-to-bed-early 40-something dad whose childless friends (Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts) start hanging with millennials (Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried). You’re not instantly recognizable when you first appear onscreen. People have mentioned they’ve been taken aback. But I feel comfortable in that role. This touches on some dark themes about aging and wanting to feel connected to youth.

FILM & MUSIC Bonus question
Adam the actor You actually pursued an acting career when you were younger. You were even in a film directed by “Chariots of Fire” director Hugh Hudson [1989’s “Lost Angels,” starring Horovitz as a juvenile delinquent in therapy with Donald Sutherland]. I read you were serious about it. I wasn’t actually really serious, in retrospect. I was really high a lot of the time. That’s probably what it was. I’m just being honest. I was living in California and smoking a lot of pot and not really focusing. And I think it shows in my work.
Behold Adam Horovitz in Noah Baumbach’s “While We’re Young,” which is out now. / JON PACK, COURTESY OF A24
I think we’re all afraid of death. Being 48 is more weird than frightening. I’m fine right now. When I’m 72, this might be a different conversation. I might be just crying constantly. The film is also about the young and how they’re seen by the previous generation. When you’re 48, and you play shows in a band, most of the people there are younger than you. I don’t really think about it so much. I’m really busy. I got a lot on my plate. I have to walk the dog three times a day.
I have to order Chinese food. Days fly by. When you’re young, you have all this time to focus on one thing. I remember there was a crack in the sidewalk, and I would try to jump my skateboard over the crack. That was my whole day. And it was a fun day. And the hangovers are worse, too. I was at my friend’s birthday party the other night, and I think I’m still drunk.

Skipping school and jamming out. Rehbein and Dausch met in high school, where they bonded over liking the same type of music. “We didn’t like school much,” Rehbein says. “We started jamming instead of going to math class. I think our other classmates would [describe us as] the most crazy guys who would just enjoy their easy way of living instead of being a student.” Touring and becoming “famous” has only strengthened their friendship, Rehbein tells us. “We shared a hotel room a lot of the time while we were on tour, so we started knowing each other really well,” he

The guys experimented by uploading three songs to YouTube and three weeks later, “Stolen Dance” had racked up a crazy amount of hits. “I feel like the people made the choice for this song to be the single, not us,” Rehbein says. The duo is currently touring and one thing’s for sure: The party’s not stopping anytime soon. EMILY LAURENCE

Influenced by the club scene Rehbein says Milky Chance’s sound is greatly influenced by the electronica scene in Germany. “If you grow up having parties with your friends and listening to this type of music, it will influence you.” He also says that going clubbing in France and Germany was a big influence on their sound.

Student rejects Duke’s rejection letter There’s wanting to go to your dream school and then there’s this. High school senior Siobhan O’Dell may not have succeeded on her first try, but she won’t take no for an answer from her dream school, Duke University. Or at least that’s what she says in her letter. Therefore, I will be attending Duke University’s 2015 freshmen class. I look forward to seeing you then. It’s not as “Single White Female as it sounds. O’Dell seems to have written the letter as a joke more than as a serious attempt to get back in the school’s good graces. An admissions officer responded to O’Dell and wrote that she could appeal the decision but that it is very rare that appeals are successful. O’Dell seems pleased that she will attend another school: the University of South Carolina. She will study biology and mathematics. She wrote about her disappointment at the Duke news on Tumblr: “I have a 4.76 weighted, an SAT score of 2040 and I go to a private school. ... Our valedictorian didn’t even get in it’s so f-—ing hard, but you might as well try. At the end of the day, O’Dell is still a kid like any other high school senior: She wrote on Tumblr that her guidance counselor is making her send an apology note to Duke. How volunteering in college can broaden your post-grad job prospects Pick up some new skills while helping others. JULIA WEST @MetroBOS
letters@metro.us
College is a time of exploration — both inside and outside of the classroom. Finding a volunteer project that speaks to your interests is a great way to enhance your education. The experience helps students gain knowledge and network, and it looks pretty impressive on a rĂŠsumĂŠ. The question students face is whether it is better to volunteer within their field or outside of it. Volunteering within your major is one of the easiest — and fastest — ways to decide if what you’re studying is truly what you wish to pursue. “By volunteering for opportunities within their major, students can implement the knowledge they have learned in the classroom in real-life situations,â€? explains Debra Manente, associate director of career services at Post University. “In doing so,â€? she adds, “they can tangibly illustrate the value of their degree on their rĂŠsumĂŠ.â€? The flip side of that is learning that perhaps you’re more interested in another field of study. “Volunteer opportunities within your major are useful, but even those outside your discipline can be invaluable,â€? says Christine Endres, branch manager for the staffing agency Accountemps. “They may work to diversify your skill set and help land a job in another area down the line,â€? she says. Bonus points if you can connect the dots between your seemingly unrelated experience and what a prospective job requires of you. Going for a sales job after volunteering in a hospital cafeteria? Sounds like interpersonal skills. Regardless of whether the volunteer work is within your major or not, volunteering can lead to tremendous growth. “By volunteering, you can learn by observing and inter-

acting with others in a totally new environment, explains Tonya Osmond, assistant director, Office of Alumni and Career Services at the University of Richmond. “The risk for trying something new is often lower through a volunteer activity, so it may reduce possible fears of failure, adds Osmond. That alone will help students when they’re entering the workforce after graduation.
On the fence about volunteering? Christine Endres explains the value of volunteering. • It catches the eye of potential employers because it shows that you’re willing to take the initiative and work for causes you believe in.
• It’s an opportunity to learn about an industry or organization, gain real-life job experience and build valuable skills that you can use later on. • It’s also a great way to start building your professional network.

Tips for the T
here are a couple of ideas of my own: How about new, bigger, roomier cars? How many years will we have to wait for that? And who was the genius that dumped some of the Big Dig debt onto the T’s books? Why is the pension fund not privy to public consumption and T employees get a nearly full retirement in their 40s? How is any of that fiscally reasonable? It’s nice but very irresponsible. I don’t doubt that 95 percent of the people who work on and for the T are good people but there are a few bad apples that have made it the problem
Re: ‘Group pushes for more T funding and expansion’ (Metro, April 2) While I am a fan of the MBTA and its proposed expansion, it never ceases to amaze me the problems of it that are pretty obvious. While this past winter was abnormal in its scope, how long has the T needed new cars and tracks? I lost count after 15 years or so. I like that there are kiosks and times to see when your train is coming and flat-screen TVs for ads inside Park Street. But
that it is. If Gov. Baker’s panel points real fingers at the real people behind the mess, we can then start making it what it should be … a world-class mass-transit system. NEIL CLAYMAN, VIA EMAIL
Regarding the story on “The future looks grim for the MBTA financially,” I was told by a wealthy individual that “when you are in a hole, stop digging.” The MBTA needs to look in a new direction for funding and it shouldn’t be inside the taxpayers’ wallet. We are all taxed enough. I think the MBTA needs to be
sold! Yes! I said it! “Sell it off.” The state can hold the land that the tracks are on but sell off the transportation part of the business. The T has been nothing but a headache and, excuse the term, “a train wreck” for years. Let a private company buy it and worry about the billions of dollars in backlogged repairs and maintenance that is needed. JOHN MCLAUGHLIN, VIA EMAIL

Sox boasting big bats, but shaky arms MLB. The Red Sox again have the talent to make a deep postseason run.
Batter up The Red Sox’s projected lineup: 1. CF Mookie Betts 2. 2B Dustin Pedroia
Worst-to-first, worst-to … this is what will be determined in 2015 as the Red Sox look to rebound from last year’s 71-91 record and a last-place finish in the American League East. The 2015 Sox will look a lot different from past seasons, most notably with their starting rotation. Only one member of the staff this season started in the rotation at the beginning of last year, and that is Clay Buchholz -— who will start on Opening Day for the first time in his career (today, 3 p.m. at Philadelphia, NESN). While the rotation may lack true star power, what they do have is dependable pitchers who are likely to eat up innings. Rick Porcello is coming off a season where he eclipsed the 200-inning mark for the first time in his career, and Wade Miley has thrown over 200 innings in each of the last two seasons. Justin Masterson has had three different seasons of 200 innings or more, and is looking for a bounceback campaign, while Joe Kelly may have the best pure stuff on the team and is primed for a breakout season. There certainly are questions in the bullpen, but as long as he stays healthy, the Red Sox have one of the best closers in the game in Koji Uehara.
3. DH David Ortiz 4. LF Hanley Ramirez 5. 3B Pablo Sandoval 6. 1B Mike Napoli 7. RF Shane Victorino 8. SS Xander Bogaerts 9. C Ryan Hanigan
Offensively, the team struggled for much of last year, finishing with a team batting average of .244, which was tied for 21st in baseball and secondto-last in the American League. This likely won’t be the case this season as the team made offense a big priority this offseason. The Sox signed sluggers Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval to help bolster the middle of the lineup. It certainly adds length to the batting order, as the pair will hit in the middle of Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz and Mike Napoli.
CLAY BUCHHOLZ GETTY IMAGES
Ramirez, who returns to the organization in which he came up with, could do some serious damage at Fenway
Park with the Green Monster so close to the plate in left field. Providing he stays healthy, Ramirez’s career-high of 33 homers could possibly be within striking distance. Having Ramirez and Sandoval in the lineup will likely benefit Ortiz and Napoli the most. Ortiz, who is now 39 years old, will likely do much better than his .263 average last year, as he will likely see better pitches to hit with the new sluggers in the order. Napoli should see an increase in his numbers as he is likely to hit behind Pedroia, Ortiz, Ramirez and Sandoval, which means there should be plenty of opportunities to drive runs in. This isn’t even mentioning the up-and-coming stars in Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts. Scoring runs shouldn’t be an issue for this year’s club. Already suffering a big blow at the end of spring training by losing starting catcher Christian Vazquez for the season because of Tommy John surgery, the Red Sox will have their work cut out for them. But, after going from worstto-first in 2013, who says they can’t do the same in 2015? RYAN HANNABLE @RyanHannable sports@metro.us

2015 MLB preview
A glance at World Series favorites The Washington Nationals won the NL East by 17 games in 2014 before falling to eventual champion San Francisco in just four games. Once again the heavy favorites in the East, the Nationals signaled that they won’t be content with another division championship as it added Max Scherzer to its already impressive rotation. The NL Central looks like a much more interesting division, and could be where
the Wild Cards come from. As long as Adam Wainwright and his arm are in town, St. Louis has an excellent chance of making the playos. Adding Jason Heyward doesn’t hurt either. Pittsburgh will be trying to return to the postseason as well, on the back of 2013 NL MVP Andrew McCutchen. The Cubs have postseason ideas of their own, with the arrivals of Jon Lester and rookies Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler ready to make some noise. In the West, Los Angeles
and San Francisco will face o again. The Giants will try to ďŹ nally ďŹ nd success in an odd-numbered year after winning the 2010, 2012, and 2014 World Series. But they’ll do so without lineup staple Pablo Sandoval. For their part, the Dodgers added Jimmy Rollins and Howie Kendrick to a team that won 94 games in 2014. Over in the AL, Boston looks to rebound from a disastrous 2014 that saw it win just 71 games. To that end, they’ve brought in the aforementioned Sandoval as
Stephen Strasburg and the Nats are favorites in the NL East. / GETTY IMAGES
CLASSIFIED DIRECTORY
well as Hanley Ramirez. Their main competition in the East will be Baltimore, looking for its third playo appearance in four years, but now without 2014 AL home run king Nelson Cruz. The AL Central is as tight as its NL counterpart. Kansas City fell just one game shy of a World Series crown last year. But Detroit will be eyeing its ďŹ fth straight division title, even with Scherzer in Washington. Cleveland also shouldn’t be discounted, especially not if Corey Kluber
can repeat the performance that won him the 2014 AL Cy Young. Seattle added Nelson Cruz to a lineup that already features Robinson Cano. After missing the playos by one game in 2014, they should be ready to challenge Los Angeles and Oakland in the West. The Angels had a pretty quiet oseason, besides Howie Kendrick moving across town to the Dodgers. World Series prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers over Seattle Mariners. LUKE MILLER
