When coffee, donuts and artwork collide Community. A Montserrat College of Art student has tapped into the beauty of her regular Dunkin’ Donuts customers. The people queue up for their coffee: There’s a girl with a bull ring in her nose and a hooded sweatshirt. Dudes with backwards Sox caps. A guy in a Carhartt jacket and work boots. They could be patrons in any Dunkin’ Donuts in New England. This one happens to be in Beverly. Nothing about the scene suggests a font of creativity, unless you think medium regulars are divinely inspired. The customers know this. They don’t come here to discuss art, so when Amberlynn Narvie, who worked behind the counter of this Cabot Street shop for three years, asked many of them to sit for portraits, every one of them initially said no. “It’s a self-conscious type of thing,” said Narvie, a 21-yearold senior at the Montserrat College of Art. “Plus, they’re just not used to a weirdo like me saying, ‘Hey, can I paint your portrait?’” The project was born out of a need to pick a senior illustration thesis. A professor advised Narvie to find something she cared about, something she knew. At the time, Narvie had worked at the Dunkin’ Donuts for years, making $180 a week to support herself while she went to school. She said she liked interacting with people from different walks of life while she served them coffee and bagels. “It makes them feel that they do exist in the world, that their lives are interesting,” she said. Narvie would eventually convince the regulars. When they told her they should find someone more attractive to paint, she told them they were beautiful. She told them they had a story worth telling. She told them they had a lot to say. Four hundred hours later,

Artist Amberlynn Narvie enjoys a coffee with one of her subjects, Linda LaRosa, whom she met while working at Dunkin’ Donuts. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO Beauty in the regular Linda LaRosa is a 51-year-old Beverly resident. She is among those who were hesitant when Narvie asked to paint her, initially giving the artist a photo of a much younger version of herself. LaRosa said she was too old, had burns from a house fire and didn’t have any nice clothes to wear for the painting. Narvie assuaged her,

telling her she wanted to paint her as she was. Tears were shed. Ultimately, LaRosa allowed Narvie to paint her as she was. •

Examining the end product in Narvie’s studio recently, LaRosa gave her verdict: “I’m flattered. I look old, but hey, I am old.”

she has painted eight of the customers. Some live at the local YMCA. One was known for smoking cigarette butts he picked up off the street. She refers to one as “Jesus” because she tends to bring people together at the shop and gets people to talk about their lives and their problems. Beverly resident Rob Weaver mills about nearby, taking in some of Narvie’s pieces. “That is the essence of Ted,” he said, referring to the Dunkin’ Donuts patron known for smoking used cigarette butts. “These really are pieces of Beverly.” Narvie’s last shift at Dunkin’ Donuts was Sunday, April 5. She quit so she could concentrate on her art fulltime. She plans to display the works at a show in Beverly on April 29. She has plans to paint six or seven more portraits of her regular patrons, she said. “I think it’s something people can relate to,” she said. “It’s something worth doing.”

On life stories

In the artist’s own words The subjects ended up feeling validated by the artistic process, Amberlynn Narvie said. “We go through our lives seeing so many different people that we never get to know,” she said. “Some of these people, you wouldn’t go up to them and say, ‘Hey, tell me your life story.’ But they’re all a lede to their own story.”

Food fight: Activists rally for $15 wages

Hundreds gathered at Forsyth Park in Boston yesterday afternoon for a rally and march demanding a higher minimum wage. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

Rally. Boston got a head start on a national day of action demanding a $15 minimum wage. The onset of a nationwide wage rage kicked off in Boston yesterday as Northeastern adjunct professors, union organizers and student activists converged on the Centennial Common to air out their grievances before marching through the city. Boston led the strikes a day earlier than the rest of the country due to the anniversary of the 2013 marathon bombings. Low-wage workers connected to the “Fight for $15” and “Wage Action” movements will strike today in 230 cities across the nation. The Fight for $15 campaign kicked off two and a half years ago. A study by the Brookings Institution showed that Boston is the third most inequitable city in the nation where the top 5 percent of household earning as much as 15 times what the bottom 20 percent make in a year. Speakers at the McDonald’s on West and Tremont streets raged against low wages in the heart of a major metropolitan area and custodial workers at the AMC Loews Theater stood

against the janitorial subcontractors where wage woes have been under the attorney general’s microscope. Sabrina Johnson, a 23-yearold from Dorchester who has worked at the Harvard Square Chipotle for eight months, was among those pushing for a higher wage and union protection. “People like me depend on this job to survive,” said Johnson. “These companies get billions of dollars and you’re telling me they don’t have the money to give us $15 an hour? If it weren’t for the crew members they’re wouldn’t be anything. Management can’t do it on their own. We deserve this.” Johnson thinks the company should give employees another break in their shift and allow them to form a union, which she says would foster improved workplace protections. Chipotle often touts its ethically sourced food. The company, according to its website, tries to use local farmers when feasible and dairy from cows without the use of synthetic hormones. However, Johnson thinks Chipotle treats the produce better than its employees. “They’re always telling us that Chipotle has better standards than Panera Bread, better standards than Qdoba,” she said. “I feel like they’re lying to us.” NATE HOMAN AND DANNY MCDONALD

Boston bombing trial jurors barred from marathon Boston Marathon. Jurors in the trial of convicted marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev may not attend Monday’s race. Jurors hearing the Boston Marathon bombing trial are barred from attending this year’s race, a federal judge told the panel on Tuesday as part of instructions ahead of the trial’s sentencing phase. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 21, was convicted last week of planting two homemade bombs at the crowded finish line of the world-famous marathon in 2013, killing three people and injuring 264 others.

The same jury that convicted Tsarnaev will hear testimony on whether he should be sentenced to death or life in prison for his crimes, starting next Tuesday, the day after the 2015 marathon takes place. “Do not attend the Boston Marathon or any related events or gatherings,” Judge

George O’Toole told jurors in U.S. District Court in Boston, describing the sentencing phase as “sensitive.” The famed race, which draws elite runners from around the world, takes place on the Patriots’ Day holiday in Massachusetts — commemorating the first battles of the American Revolution — and has taken on special significance for the city’s residents since the 2013 bomb attack. O’Toole said the sentencing phase of the trial — in which witnesses will again be called to the stand — is expected to take four weeks, followed by jury deliberations. “In the next phase of this case you will learn a lot more,” defense lawyer Judy Clarke told jurors during closing statements in Tsarnaev’s trial.

Boko Haram Islamic militants have kidnapped at least 2,000 girls and women since the start of last year, turning them into cooks, sex slaves and fighters, and sometimes killing those who refused to comply, Amnesty International said on Tuesday. The human rights group’s 90-page report based on dozens of interviews with witnesses and escaped abductees comes a year after the group seized more than 200 schoolgirls from Chibok, a community deep inside an area of northeastern Nigeria the fighters claimed

Great news for epilepsy patients: A new study by NYU Langone Comprehensive Epilepsy Center found that some children and adults with treatment-resistant epilepsy may find relief with cannabidiol, a compound in medical marijuana that does not contain psychoactive properties. Though there have been many anecdotal reports of medical marijuana being beneficial to epilepsy patients, this study by Dr. Orrin Devinsky is the first of its kind. The study’s participants were prescribed cannabidiol in a liquid daily dose. For the 137 patients who completed the study, the number of seizures decreased by an average of Perceptions

Do you think your study will help change the perception of medical marijuana? I think the evidence has been coming in for a while that there are medical beneďŹ ts for marijuana. There’s good evidence that THC can relieve nausea for people with cancer and HIV and multiple sclerosis. We need to do more scientiďŹ c studies, and we’ll probably ďŹ nd there are more medical beneďŹ ts.

54 percent throughout the 12-week period. We talked to Dr. Devinsky about the study and why he thinks it can mean huge changes for those with epilepsy. Would you say this treatment is unprecedented? It is in the field of epilepsy. Medical marijuana products have been used in other disorders in European countries, but not for epilepsy, and though a lot of people are being treated with medical marijuana products, you still don’t know what’s in there; it can vary from batch to batch. The standards for a drug company tend to be a lot higher than for the artisanal producers in a state like Colorado. Do you think this came about because marijuana has become legalized in parts of the U.S.? That might partly be the impetus for the interest because there were reports from states like Colorado where they saw dramatic improvements in children with epilepsy, and that was part of the excitement that led us to be interested in trying this.

Side eects

Are there any side eects? The major side eects we’ve seen are tiredness — that’s the most common one. Other side eects we did see in children included weight loss and diarrhea because it’s administered as an oil, so some kids had a response to the oil. We saw decreased appetite in over 10 percent of patients. I don’t think we’ll know until we get that double-blind study if it’s as eective as it’s been in this study. I think it might be huge for people with epilepsy, but until we get this data, I think we just won’t know.

When will the medication become available? It would be hard to imagine it would be available before one and a half to two years. The FDA won’t approve a medication without data from a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial. ANDREA PARK

Obama tells Congress he plans to remove Cuba from terrorism list

President Barack Obama told Congress on Tuesday that he plans to remove Cuba from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism, submitting a report and certifications required under law, the White House said. “We will continue to have differences with the Cuban government, but our concerns over a wide range

of Cuba’s policies and actions fall outside the criteria that is relevant to whether to rescind Cuba’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism,” the White House said in a statement. Cuba’s communist government had flatly demanded removal from the U.S. blacklist to move forward on efforts to normalize relations between the two former Cold War foes. Charlize Theron is totally surprised that she’s engaged

CULTURE

Considering that during her nine-year relationship with Stuart Townsend she was vehemently against walking down the aisle, it’s understandable that even Charlize Theron was not expecting she’d be engaged to new beau Sean Penn after just over a year of dating. She’s shocked by the development, I tell you. Or rather, she tells you, via Esquire: “For both of us, there was never a moment where we thought that this — what we have today — would ever even be a possibility. Ever, ever, ever,” she says. “I think we’re both finding ourselves at this moment in our lives kind of shocked. Both of us. Just when you think you know how things are supposed to go down, life just kicks you in the ass and guess what? You don’t have a clue.” That is a pretty unpleasant way to describe getting engaged, but maybe that’s just what life with Penn is like?

Oscar Isaac: We’re right to fear a robot uprising Interview. The “Ex Machina” star has a lot to say about technology. After earning acclaim for period pieces like “Inside Llewyn Davis” and “A Most Violent Year,” Oscar Isaac is facing forward with the mindbending new sci-fi indie “Ex Machina” — in which he plays a hermetic scientist trying to perfect artificial intelligence — and some other little film out later this year called “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” But that doesn’t mean he’s optimistic about the future.

Most stories about A.I. end badly. Why is that? I think with history in general, the things we create we tend to lose control over. Like the Industrial Revolution: In a very short amount of time we’ve done a lot of damage, like what’s happening with the sea level rising, climate change — which is all real and is all happening. [Laughs] If that happens with stuff that’s not self-aware, what would happen with things that are self-aware?

Then our mothers felt a lot of pressure to invest all of their time and energy in their careers,” she says. “For our generation, we’re lucky to have a choice. It’s OK to do both, and many of us want to do both.” For those of us wanting success at work and to come home and bake a cake from scratch, Morin’s new book, “Homemakers: A Domestic Handbook for the Digital Generation,” helps bridge the gap between pluggedin career girl and domestic diva. She shows us how.

Embrace technology Need inspiration? Look no further than your computer. “We have access to an incredible amount

“This DIY has endless possibilities,” says Morin about etching glass. “[It works on] everything from vases to unique drinkware.”

of information — take advantage of that,” Morin says. “Just as technology has impacted the way we communicate and the way we buy things, it has also transformed the home.” One project she loves from the book is the wireless charging nightstand. “I love incorporating technology into the home in a seamless fashion,” she says.

Remember to ‘unplug’ As much as we rely on technology, Morin believes we need to unplug too. “Taking ‘analog’ time is incredibly important,” she says. “Carve out time each week to completely disconnect and get creative. At Brit + Co., we actually take one day each quarter to learn a new creative skill — we call it Creativity Day. People have learned everything from woodworking to cheese making.”

Don’t let time constraints stop you Everyone is always busy, but your lack of free time shouldn’t scare you away from pursuing creative projects. “Homemaking doesn’t have to be about spending all of your time at home. You can add personality into your home with small projects,” Morin says. Two time-friendly DIYs she recommends from her book are etched glasses (above) and a balloon backdrop. “You wouldn’t expect glass etching to be as easy as it is,” she says. “Plus, these make the perfect personalized gift.” As for the balloon backdrop, “it’s one of my favorite party tricks,” Morin says. “Simply blow up a bunch of balloons, string them together using fishing line and hang them up in rows on your wall using painter’s tape. Simple as that!”

Surviving wedding season on a budget Here’s how to join all the festivities without going broke. JOANNE REINARD @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

When the fancy papered wedding invites start piling up, getting invited to a friend’s wedding can be more stressful than exciting. C.K. Alexander, wedding expert and creator of “Love Ink” and “The Single Bride” blog, shares her tips for getting through spring’s wedding season without going into debt.

How to save on wedding gifts

Saving on bachelorette parties, bridal showers and more

Alexander’s first tip about wedding gifts: stick to the registry. The good thing about a registry is that the bride and groom really want everything on it. So even if you can only afford to get something small, they’ll be pumped. Alexander also says not to rule out DIY gifts. “One of my favorite DIY ideas is making a wine box,” she says. Decorate the box however you want and include the couple’s favorite bottle of wine inside. “To make it extra special, ask the bride

It stinks to be the one responsible friend fronting the money for all the obligations leading up to the wedding. One person alone should not be responsible for covering any entire bridal event, including bachelorette parties and bridal showers. “The bridesmaids should know up front all the costs that are associated with the wedding and, instead of buying individual gifts or accessories, share the costs of one big gift split between the bridesmaids,” Alexander says.

How to get your bridesmaid’s dress for next to nothing “Think of renting a bridesmaid dress on a specialized site, such as RentTheRunway.com,” Alexander says, adding that some dresses can be rented for only $20. Another

The South End gets its own groceries A new housing development brings a Whole Foods to an area more known for its dining-out options than its dining-in opportunities. LINDA CLARKE @MetroBOS

letters@metro.us

Of all the changes the South End has endured this century, the building of Ink Block on the old Boston Herald site — hence the name — stands as among the most significant. For one thing, it’s a large parcel of land, around 6 acres, adding around 600 square feet of residential space spread over four buildings: 1 Ink, 2 Ink, and 3 Ink have 315 apartments; and Sepia, a condominium, brings another 83 homes to the area. For another, it’s brought a Whole Foods Market to the neighborhood, and not just the South End neighborhood. “I see people from my old neighborhood shopping there, says Ink Block’s property manager Jessica Ryan, who was previously based in Fort Point. “This Whole Foods serves Fort Point, South Boston, Chinatown, the Financial District and the South End, she says, which may be under-

estimating its reach. Still, if demand for a good supermarket was high, it was also high for the condominiums, which are all sold except one. The apartments are almost 50 percent leased too. Because each building is different, from funky to more conservative, Ink Block is attracting a wide demographic of renters, some of whom already live in the South End. “It’s interesting — we had a lot of people looking who already live in the South End, in the old brownstones, says Ryan, who is a Cape Cod native. “After the harsh winter, they were looking for modern amenities and cutting their heating bills. Next on the block, so to speak, is a 200-room AC Hotel by Marriott, which is due to open in 2017. It’s not too unusual a mix, as many hotels add residences, and Ink Block’s retail and restaurants will bring plenty of foot traffic. Plus, one benefit for residents is having somewhere for guests to stay. For all the changes it brings to the area though, Ink Block was designed to fit the South End’s low-rise vibe. “This is such a warm neighborhood, architecturally. This building was designed to fit the scale of the South End. They didn’t build another high tower. Instead, it’s a neighborhood block in an area of town that was pretty barren and forgotten, Ryan says.

Quest for the Cup begins NHL. The Stanley Cup playos kick o tonight and the ďŹ eld appears to be wide open. What a finish. The final week, days and even hours of the 2014-15 NHL regular season were drama-filled as teams jockeyed for playoff positioning, division titles and their postseason lives in a thrilling completion. The league can only hope the playoffs will provide as much excitement over the next two months. As first-round games begin on Wednesday, there is only one sure thing to expect —there will be a new champion. The Kings failed to qualify and left the door wide open for a new team to take the throne. ERIC GOLDSTEIN @MetroBOS sports@metro.us

Teams full of surprises In the Eastern Conference, it’s the Ottawa Senators who could pull o some major upsets. The Senators have gone 22-4-4 since Feb. 10 and gained entry on the ďŹ nal day of the regular season this past Saturday. Behind goalie Andrew “the Hamburglarâ€? Hammond, the Senators are the hottest team entering the playos and the squad that no team in either league would elect to face in the opening round. The Canadiens will no doubt have their hands full in Round 1. In the Western Conference, it’s the Minnesota Wild who have also ridden their goaltender to a sizzling ďŹ nish. Devan Dubnyk, who was acquired in January from the Coyotes, went 27-9-2 with the Wild. Minnesota recorded a ďŹ rst-round upset last year, and the team has gone 13-6-1

MARK BOROWIECKI AND THE SENATORS WILL MEET THE CANADIENS IN THE FIRST ROUND.

Rugged Blues winger Vladimir Tarasenko had a breakout season with 37 goals and 36 assists and is immensely talented. He could be the reason the Blues ďŹ nally advance deep on the Western Conference side of the bracket. In the East, Montreal goaltender Carey Price led the NHL in wins, GAA and save percentage. He’s the favorite to win the Vezina and will be tough to beat in a seven-game series.

The slate

The Cup playos will begin with a urry of Game 1s: Ottawa at Montreal (tonight, 7 p.m., NHLN) NY Islanders at Washington (tonight, 7 p.m., USA) Chicago at Nashville (tonight, 8:30 p.m., NBCSN) Calgary at Vancouver (tonight, 10 p.m., USA) Pittsburgh at NY Rangers (Thursday, 7 p.m., NBCSN)

Carey Price has a 1.96 GAA this season. / GETTY IMAGES

Conference predictions The Blackhawks will get a major boost when Patrick Kane returns. The Wild will test Kane and Chicago, but the depth of the ’Hawks depth up top will be too much for Minnesota in a long series. In the East, look for the Canadiens to outlast the Rangers in seven games in the conference ďŹ nals as Carey Price outduels Henrik Lundqvist in a low-scoring series. It will avenge the Rangers’ series win over the Canadiens just last year.

Jonathan Toews has 66 points this season. / GETTY IMAGES

The Stanley Cup returns (once again) to Chicago Don’t sleep on Price, as the Montreal netminder had a career year and led the NHL in wins, goals against average and save percentage. He’ll be especially tough to beat in a seven game series but we like the Blackhawks’ chances of doing so. Chicago captain Jonathan Toews will lift Lord Stanley’s Cup as the Blackhawks beat the Habs in seven and win their third title in six years.

On paper, the Ducks should be the class of the Western Conference. But with a shaky goaltending situation, a team could upset them.

The Lightning could certainly get to the Cup Final and even win it, but goaltender Ben Bishop has never appeared in a playoff game.

Goaltender Braden Holtby had a career year while Alexander Ovechkin led the league in goals and should win the Hart Trophy. They are a trendy pick.

The top team in the NHL early, the Predators really stumbled into the playoffs. Their first round matchup against Chicago is wholly intriguing.

Can goaltender Devan Dubnyk possibly keep up his ridiculous numbers? Like Ottawa, this is a team that nobody wants to see.
