Hernandez gets life in prison for 2013 killing Guilty. Celebrity status and an expert defense team couldn’t get the NFL star off the hook. Former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez was sentenced yesterday to life in prison for murdering an acquaintance in an industrial park near his North Attleboro home, concluding the first of two murder trials he faces this year. A jury found Hernandez, 25, guilty of first-degree murder in the June 2013 slaying of Odin Lloyd, who had been dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancée at the time. During the trial in Bristol County Superior Court in Fall River, the two men were described as having been in the early stages of friendship, but Hernandez soured on Lloyd after he hung out with people the former NFL star disliked. After the jury announced the verdict, Massachusetts Superior Court Associate Justice Susan Garsh sentenced Hernandez to life in prison without the possibility of parole, the mandatory punishment for first-degree murder in the state. Hernandez, who had stood to hear the jury’s decision, collapsed into his chair after the verdict was read, and court security officers handcuffed him. His mother and fiancée, who were in court, broke into tears. The Patriots cut Hernan-

Odin Lloyd’s mother: Son was family’s backbone The mother of Odin Lloyd — the man Aaron Hernandez was found guilty of murdering Wednesday — told the court her son was the “backbone of the family.” “Odin was the man of the house,” Ursula Ward said of her only son and eldest child. “Odin was his sisters’ keeper.” Ward read the victim impact statement from inside the Fall River courtroom after the verdict and sentencing were announced. She said she thanks God “every second and every day” for the time she had to spend with her son. Her voice filled with emotion, Ward said, “The day I laid my son, Odin, to rest, I felt my heart stop beating. I felt like I wanted to go into

“Slim to none. It happens occasionally, but it’s rare.” Will this affect his upcoming double murder trial? “It will be used against him. They can’t use a prior conviction to say he did it, but they can use it to prove motive, intent, planning, or design.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU

dez, a rising star with a $41 million contract, hours after his arrest on June 26, 2013, nine days after a teen-age jogger found Lloyd’s body. The highly publicized case was another black eye for the NFL. The United States’ most profitable sports league was already facing a lawsuit by former players who contend it ignored the concussion risks they faced on the gridiron and criticism for its handling of cases involving domestic violence by players. During four months of testimony, the jury heard from more than 130 witnesses who testified that Hernandez, a native of Bristol, Connecticut, was a regular user of marijuana and sometimes of the stimulant PCP; that he owned guns and at times acted paranoid; and that he felt his friends did not appreciate the things he did for them. Jurors who met with reporters after the verdict was announced said deliberations were often emotional, and some members of the panel sometimes cried. “I think we’ll all remember it for the rest of our lives,” one of them said. Robert Kraft, the Patriots’ billionaire owner, testified that Hernandez said he was innocent and claimed to have been at a nightclub at the time of the killing. Defense lawyers closed their case by saying Hernandez had been present at the time of Lloyd’s slaying, but had been a witness, not a participant. REUTERS

Former Pats player opens his trap Former Patriots player Brandon Spikes claimed to be confused in the aftermath of his old teammate’s first-degree murder conviction. Spikes, a linebacker who is currently a free agent, played with Hernandez during his time in Foxborough, as well as during their college days at the University of Florida.
He apparently disagreed with Hernandez’s murder conviction. Shortly after the verdict came down, Spikes tweeted, “I’M CONFUSED ABOUT THE JUSTICE SYSTEM THESE DAYS !!” Backlash came swiftly, with fans suggesting Spikes’ judgment was lackluster. METRO

City honors victims of marathon attack Wednesday marked the second anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings that killed three and injured at least 260, shaking the city to its core. The city observed a moment of silence at 2:49 p.m. in the afternoon — the time at which the two bombs were detonated on Boylston Street near the finish line. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh joined a group of bombing survivors who unveiled banners at the site of the bombing, located near Copley Square about 200 yards from the finish line. /NICOLAUS CZARNECKI

Report. Federal agents needed fingerprints to ID marathon bombers Anti-terror officials and the FBI have increased “engagement with state and local law enforcement since a congressional committee exposed a “troubling gap that existed during the Boston Marathon bombing and its aftermath. A follow-up report written by the Homeland Security Committee found the FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Forces now provide regular briefings on open terrorism cases to state and local agencies. The review was prompted by the 2013 bombings carried out by Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, and the committee said it is “pleased with the progress made since that episode. “This follow-up report builds upon the information gathered from our fact-finding trips to Russia, Boston, and other law enforcement hubs across the US, said U.S. Rep. William Keating. The report also found on-

The committee has also encouraged public-outreach efforts to build on the “see something, say something campaign, noting the FBI did not know the marathon bombers’ identities until scanning Tamerlan’s fingerprints nine hours after grainy photos of the two were released. “Had someone who knew either of the Tsarnaevs stepped forward and contacted police, MIT Police Officer Sean Collier might be alive today, the committee wrote, referencing the officer killed by the brothers days after the bombing. The initial report found “missed opportunities to contact Tamerlan when he traveled to Russia and back, and citing a classified letter, the committee said it is “encouraged by efforts to maintain an accurate Terrorist Screening Database. NYE: EARTH DAYS 45 YEARS APART Exclusive. Bill Nye, of “Science Guy” fame, gears up for Earth Day. By the spring of 1970, Cleveland’s Cuyahoga River had caught on fire, disabling a couple of railroad bridges. Dozens of people had been killed in their sleep by industrial air that descended on Pennsylvania towns at night. Like my dad, I was a Boy Scout. I could tell nature wasn’t what it used to be. The U.S. had become a deadly place — for black leaders and anyone who wanted to drink the water or breathe. So when Earth Day was organized I was all in. As a native to what was the small town of Washington, DC, I rode my bicycle all the way down to the Washington Monument and the big Earth Day stage. The speakers were trying to shake us up, to get us all talking about our planet. And it worked. The Environmental Protection Agency was created along with the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and other environmental legislation. This is the 45th Earth Day, and I hope it’s the biggest one so far because, today, even the horrific ongoing effects of pollution are being overwhelmed by the Earth’s main issue: climate change. It’s as big as the
Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Legal Fees through May 30th

planet itself and we’ve hardly begun to do things about it. During my lifetime, the Earth’s human population has grown from less than three billion to almost seven and a quarter billion. We are all breathing and burning the Earth’s one thin atmosphere. If you could somehow drive a car straight up, you’d be in outer space in less than an hour. That’s the problem, everyone: A great many people and not all that much air to live in. Often people ask me “What can I do about climate change?” Well madams and sirs, this Earth Day, just talk about it. Talk about climate change. Earth Day’s purpose was and is to raise awareness, to get people fired up. We are living in an extraordinary time. The climate science is clear, yet many of our leaders succeed in denying it. They run for government office, but seem to hate government and what we can do together. By talking about pollution and climate change on Earth Day, we can turn things around. I hope this year more of us than ever are talking so that more of us are more aware than ever of what we are doing to the air we share. Together, we can change the world.

Three things you need to know Europe votes to call 1915 massacre of Armenians ‘genocide’
U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts performed a civic duty on Wednesday by reporting for jury duty at his local courthouse in Maryland, but he was not picked to serve in a case. The top judge in the United States, who usually presides over proceedings at the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, was a potential juror in an automobile negligence case being heard in Rockville, Maryland.
The European Parliament backed a motion on Wednesday calling the massacre a century ago of up to 1.5 million Armenians a genocide, days after Pope Francis used the same term. Although the resolution repeated language previously adopted by the parliament in 1987, it could raise tensions with Turkey. The Turkish Foreign Ministry accused the parliament of attempting to rewrite history. Turkey agrees Christian Armenians were killed in clashes with Ottoman soldiers in 1915, when Armenians lived in the empire ruled by Istanbul, but denies that this amounted to genocide.

Get ready to cheer on the runners Marathon. You will see a few familiar faces competing for the first place spot.
Ready to root for Shalane again? / GETTY IMAGES
The worst winter in Boston’s history is now history. The streets, previously buried under banks of snow, are thankfully now clear, and the heavy boots have been replaced with running sneakers. But for those running in the 119th edition of the Boston Marathon, the sneakers haven’t been far from their thoughts for quite some time. Though the weather made it nearly impossible to train the way many of them would have liked, where there’s a will there’s a way — and that
makes this year’s race that much more fulfilling for the locals who weathered the blizzards, And who should you be looking for on Marathon Monday? Last year’s Boston Marathon was special in many ways, as it was the first race occurring after the deadly bombings that took place near the finish line, and the occasion was one for both solemnity and celebration of the Boston spirit. But one thing the Boston Marathon hadn’t had since 1983 was an American male winner. Well, Meb Keflezighi changed that. Keflezighi, who lives in California, raced to a 2:08:37 time to take first place — and he’s back again this year to defend his title
against the world’s best. The reigning women’s winner, however, will not be returning to defend her title. Rita Jeptoo, the three-time women’s Boston Marathon winner, including the last two races, has been banned from the sport for two years after recently testing positive for Erythropoietin, or EPO, a performance-enhancing drug. She also starred in our favorite GIF last year, when she was caught on camera outrunning a Green Line train. With what is hopefully a clean playing field now, look for Massachusetts native Shalane Flanagan to make her run for the crown, as she’s consistently among the top finishers. The last American woman to win the Boston
Marathon was Lisa Rainsberger in 1985, so Flanagan would break a long dry spell. Spectators will line the streets for 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Heartbreak Hill, and all the way to the finish line on Boylston Street. Take in the morning Red Sox game and when it ends, cheer the runners on down Commonwealth Avenue as they enter the home stretch. The Boston Marathon will include plenty of pain, but much more pleasure as runners look to complete the event not just for personal glory, but for the charities for which they have raised money over the past year. MARATHON GUIDE
How to get to the marathon The marathon may be all about going the distance, but it shouldn’t be quite that difficult to get there if you just want to watch. All the towns the course passes through will have various road closures staggered to meet the pace of the racers. Check out the box on the right to find out when the runners will be passing through your town, though the Marathon organizers do warn the times are approximate. The Boston Athletic Association site also has advice for the best times to watch everywhere, which you can see at www. baa.org. They strongly advise avoiding driving due to the crowds, though meters in the city will be free because it’s Patriots Day. If you’re planning to take the T, keep in mind that both Copley and Arlington stations are closed for the race, and you’ll want to get to the course via the Hynes stop. Oh, and remember: No bags are allowed near the finish line, so leave your backpack at home. LISA WEIDENFELD

Can Bieber top his terrible Coachella behavior for weekend No. 2?
1 3
We’ve still got another weekend of the massive Coachella music festival to look forward to, so maybe Justin Bieber isn’t quite done yet vying for the title of most obnoxious person at the world’s largest gathering of obnoxious people. Not that he needs to try, as on the first weekend of the fest he already put in such spectacular work. I’m not sure which part is my fa-

vorite. When he tried to force his way into a VIP section during Drake’s performance and got put in a choke hold and forced out by security? Pretty fun. Or how about when security at another event wouldn’t let Kendall Jenner in because she’s under 21 and Bieber “threw a fit” and “caused an enormous scene”? Also good. Or how about reports that Jenner was overheard saying

“Justin’s a d-bag” after he treated her “like a hanger-on” and later “brought girl after girl to his room,” according to In Touch? All solid efforts. But really, I think he’s just getting warmed up. Certainly he has more tricks up his sleeve, like pushing a person in a wheelchair out of the way or setting fire to a nearby animal shelter. Your move, Bieber.
Ed Sheeran: Harry Styles leaked his own nude pic
Be careful what secrets you tell your friends. That’s the lesson One Direction member Harry Styles is learning after pal Ed Sheeran gave a candid interview to a New Zealand outlet in which he revealed that Styles leaked his own nude photo back in 2012, despite the fact that Styles denied it at the time. (Of course he did.) “Did you know that Harry leaked that picture himself? He leaked his own picture. I think that’s amazing,” Sheeran

In case you were wondering. “[Harry] definitely hasn’t got a little thing, so no, I did not write ‘Little Things’ about little things,” he says.

‘Cabin in Woods’ coming back to bite Joss Whedon
4
There might be a very good reason that Joss Whedon has seemed beleaguered and exhausted while promoting “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” He’s also facing down a $10 million lawsuit over his and Drew Goddard’s delightful 2012 horror-comedy “The Cabin in the Woods.” Peter Gallagher — not the actor, as it turns out — claims Whedon and Goddard ripped off the idea for the genrebending film from his 2006 novel “The Little White Trip:
ALAN MARKFIELD
A Night in the Pines,” and he wants them to pay up. Detailing how the two are similar would be risking spoilers, but there is this: Gallagher “selfpublished” the book and sold it around Venice Beach and Santa Monica. “The defendants currently reside and operate out of Santa Monica, California, a short distance from where the book was sold,” the complaint reads, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Sounds like a slamdunk case to me, your honor.

Sticks and stones won’t hurt him Interview. Kevin Dunn talks about playing enjoyably depressive Ben Cafferty on “Veep.”
Character actor Kevin Dunn didn’t start appearing on “Veep” as cynical, depressive, Scotch-swilling Presidential Chief of Staff Ben Cafferty until the second season, and wasn’t a regular until the third. Now that the show has begun its fourth go-round, Dunn reflects on a character who fits right in with all the pessimism and diamond-cut insults. Given that so many of the writers of “Veep” are from the U.K., do you often have to advise them on American culture? Sometimes we’ll say, “I think this is too British.” But they’re pretty savvy guys. Frank Rich is on the show basically all the time, and he’s always aware of anything that might not scan correctly. How do you think Ben has changed over your tenure? Over the course of this presidency he’s become

Bad words
Insults One of the most notable parts of the show, as well as of “The Thick of It” and its movie spin-off “In the Loop,” are those profanity-laden insults, some of which are tailormade for the actors. How do you feel about them? [The writers] are just kind of fearless. They’ll attack anything. They’ll attack the way a person looks, the way a person sounds. There’s just this no holds barred taking of the piss. It’s like a really dysfunctional family that’s always choosing sides. There were six of us in my family, and it was always about who was conspiring against who. My brother would be my best friend one day and be conspiring against me with my sister the next day. It’s very much like that. It’s all about surviving.

really disillusioned. His friends turned out not to be who he thought they were. If he really didn’t know he was a manicdepressive, he certainly found out. [Laughs] You had a key role in 1993’s “Dave,” which is a far nicer comedy about politics. It’s amazing how drastically both politics and political comedy has changed since that rosier age. Twenty years ago, we would be shocked by how far politics has devolved into fights. But there’s so much more comedy you can mine from politics now. It’s so much easier. It’s all really there. There’s no longer this fraternal feeling that Congress used to have — “My esteemed colleague” and so on. Now they’re yelling during presidential States of the Union. It makes for great comedy. It’s depressing, but it makes for great comedy. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

As modest and self-deprecating as the four members of Kodaline are — describing themselves as “not great musicians but getting better” — it’s an unsurprising ascent. Their 2013 debut “In a Perfect World” dropped at No. 3 in the U.K. album charts, with “All I Want” being featured in “Vampire Diaries,” “Catfish” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” here in the States. Meanwhile, their sophomore album, “Coming Up for Air,” has reached No. 4, followed by a sold-out U.K.
… “When we met Courteney Cox and Nicole Scherzinger, it’s like, ‘holy s---.’ They’re superstars, but once you meet them and have a drink, they’re just lovely people.” While Kodaline’s excited backstage A-list chatter is akin to the average guy telling his friends for the umpteenth time about when he bumped into so-and-so from the movies, the Irish indie-rock quartet is actually becoming a part of the planet pop “scene.”
No sophomore slump Clearly the looming self-doubt that seems to plague so many bands with the so-called “dif-
ficult second album” didn’t cause Steve Garrigan [vocals], Mark Prendergast [guitar], Vinny May [drums] or Jay Boland [bass] to falter. “When we started talking to a producer, we already had 40 demos because we never stopped writing,” explains Boland. The band recorded with U2 and R.E.M.’s producer Garret “Jacknife” Lee while also spending time working with Snow Patrol’s guitarist Johnny McDaid at his studio in fiancee Cox’s Malibu home. It’s where the boys got to enjoy a bit of Monica Geller hospitality firsthand: “I was like ‘F---ing hell, that’s Monica from ‘Friends,’” blusters May. “She said, ‘Congratulations’ and handed me a bottle of champagne. And I thought, ‘I like you already.’” Just days before, May had proposed to his girlfriend of eight years at the top of the Rockefeller Center in New York. And yes, he even got down on one knee.

What happens in Vegas The celebrations didn’t end there for the now Londonbased band who, as the bassist puts it, “were doing some music” with One Direction’s Harry Styles and recording their new album when they got a call on a Saturday to head to Las Vegas. “We were told there were some free hotel rooms, so we just got a car and went to a 21st birthday — that was probably the most rock ’n’ roll thing we’ve done,” May confides. So what 21-year-old lays on free rooms? “Niall,” mutters Boland, who is acutely aware that celebrating with 1D’s Niall Horan is by no means your average shot-sinking 21st in a questionable club. “We didn’t put our hands in our pockets for the whole weekend — he paid for the lot.”

Polaris, comprised of Mark J. Mulcahy, Scott Boutier and Dave McCaffrey, all members of the indie rock band Miracle Legion, were a studio-only band who formed in the ’90s to create the music for “The Adventures of Pete and Pete,” including the beloved theme song, “Hey Sandy.” This is their second live show and their first-ever in Boston, kicking off a small tour.
The band Delta Rae hail from Durham, North Carolina, centering on the powerful vocals and closer harmonies of the three Holljes siblings, Ian, Eric and Brittany. Their talent was immediately clear; it took only three years from their live debut for them to get signed to a major label. Their second album, “After It All,” just dropped Wednesday. PROVIDED

Singapore’s parks and gardens are one of its great delights, surprising visitors who expect to see only a modern urban metropolis. One of the biggest and best is the Singapore Botanic Gardens (www. sbg.org.sg), with 183 acres open to the public every day of the year. The lush and colorful gardens, alive with tropical plants and trees, are free, except for the National Orchid Garden, which is located within the Botanic Gardens. The Orchid Garden has over 60,000 orchids on display, artfully arranged so that the predominant colors change with the seasons. Do unto others — all the others Re: ‘Criminals are people, too’ (Metro, April 14) I find it ironic how passionate the letter writers were about the mistreatment of criminals in our justice system. We don’t treat each other outside of prison with the basic human
dignity, respect, and acknowledgment that we all deserve. Try smiling or saying good morning to someone and I think they would fall over. Thanks to earbuds and cell phones we have all become so self-absorbed in our own little world that caring and concern of others is something of the past. JOHN MCLAUGHLIN, VIA EMAIL

NHL. The Bruins are looking for a new GM after dumping Peter Chiarelli Wednesday.

The Bruins missed the playoffs for the first time since 2007, so it was probably inevitable that some big changes would be made. A team that had such high expectations of another deep run in the playoffs had to be extremely disappointed that their offseason started so much earlier than usual. At their year-end press conference on Monday, GM Peter Chiarelli and head coach Claude Julien stubbornly refused to acknowledge the obvious — that at least one of their days on Causeway Street was clearly numbered. Chiarelli, the former Harvard captain, was the first to go on Wednesday as Boston fired him after nine very successful seasons in charge of the Original Six club. “This was a process,” said Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs Wednesday at TD Garden. “We had an ongoing dialogue and we finally made a decision regarding Peter on Tuesday. When we realized this would be in the best in-

terest of the club, we moved forward.” The NHL draft lottery takes place on Saturday, with the actual draft taking place in June and free agency beginning in July. Well before then, the Bruins will have settled on a new general manager. Now the question is whether or not Julien will coach another game for the Black and Gold?
MLB. Sox stumble, prep for weekend vs. Orioles
*Must be 21+ to attend
The Red Sox were unable to complete a sweep of the Nationals Wednesday afternoon, as Wade Miley posted atrocious numbers in his Fenway debut in a 10-5 loss. The hurler allowed seven earned runs on five hits and three walks in just two and one third innings pitched. In a deep hole, Boston rallied to cut the gap to 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning, but reliever Robbie Ross Jr. surrendered a two-run homer to Tyler Moore in the seventh to all but kill the Sox’ comeback effort.

“Once we go through the exhaustive check for the next GM,” explained Bruins president Cam Neely, “we will leave it up to that GM to decide.” By and large, Chiarelli’s tenure was filled with winning seasons and playoff rounds (10 series wins). Under Chiarelli, the Bruins snapped their 39-year drought by winning the Stanley Cup in 2011, reached another Stanley Cup Final in 2013 and captured the Presidents’ Trophy last season (for most points in the league). All that success made it easy to paint over the cracks lying under the surface: an awful track record of draft picks, not to mention some terrible trades (Tyler Seguin and Johnny Boychuk being the prime examples), strange free agency decisions and a tendency to fall in love with his own mediocre players (e.g., Chris Kelly, Gregory Campbell, Daniel Paille). Eventually a season like this past one would occur. “We got away from our identity,” noted Neely. “We weren’t as tough to play against as we wanted to be.” RICH SLATE @RichSlate
