De Blasio’s New York: One big green apple OneNYC. A 90 percent reduction in waste production, more subway service, storm safeguards are on tap. Greener. Cleaner. Faster. Safer. Mayor Bill de Blasio marked Earth Day with a “blueprint for the future of New York City,” an ambitious environmental plan to reduce greenhouse gases, increase recycling, expand mass transit and shore up the city against future Sandy-like disasters. Reducing the amount of trash that comes from America’s largest city is the centerpiece of the OneNYC plan. “The average New Yorker throws out nearly 15 pounds of waste a week, adding up to millions upon millions of tons a year,” de Blasio said. “To be a truly sustainable city, we need to tackle this challenge head on.”

The mayor by 2030 wants to reduce the amount of garbage currently 3.6 tons — by 90 percent and would do it by:

Offer tax rebates and economic incentives to encourage New Yorkers to buy into OneNYC.

What’s not in the plan The mayor did not endorse the City Council push to slap a 10 cent

tax on plastic bags, but his office reportedly does want to work with the council to reduce their usage — 10 million a year. Also missing from the plan was a push by many environmentalists to have tolls slapped on the East River bridges to encourage the use of public transit.

Plan for the MTA

De Blasio did, however, push for an expansion of subway service. In addition to the new Second Avenue Subway now underway in Manhattan, the mayor wants an expansion of the 4 lines into south Brooklyn. The mayor wants the state-controlled MTA to build south along Utica Avenue to “provide a new transit option to residents of Crown Heights, East New York and Jamaica.” Utica Avenue “is one of the densest areas in the city not directly served by the subway,” according to a copy of the full plan obtained by Capital New York. Neighborhoods along

Fighting poverty De Blasio included in his OneNYC plan a goal of moving nearly a million New Yorkers out of poverty. •

“The way forward is to create a vision for one city where there’s opportunity for all, sustainability for all and fairness for all,” de Blasio said.

Grand Central Station. Energy upgrades prove you’re never too gray to go green

Grand Central Station GETTY IMAGES

Iconic Grand Central Terminal, among the most fabulous old New York structures, has gotten in on the Earth Day action. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has completed what’s being billed as its largestever energy-efficiency

project for $25 million at the Beaux-Arts palace, which opened in 1913. “The upgrades will reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions by more than 11,200 tons a year — the equivalent of removing roughly 2,140 cars from the road”

and save $2.5 million in power costs each year, state officials said in a news release. Among the changes: an installation of cooling towers, temperature controls and compressed air and steam distribution systems, air handling up-

grades, and new chillers to enhance the terminal’s original cooling system. The project is one of several the MTA is partnering with the New York Power Authority to improve energy efficiency in its facilities. JOHN A. OSWALD

Jury still out in Etan Patz disappearance In court. If convicted, Hernandez faces a maximum penalty of life in prison. Jurors deliberating murder and kidnapping charges against a man who

confessed to strangling 6-year-old Etan Patz in 1979 ended a sixth day of deliberations on Wednesday without reaching a verdict in the notorious case. Pedro Hernandez, 54, is on trial in the killing of Patz, whose disappearance from his New York City neighborhood nearly 36 years ago changed the

way U.S. authorities respond to reports of missing or abducted children. Patz was among the first children whose picture appeared on milk cartons in an effort to find them. During the deliberations in state Supreme Court in Manhattan, the jurors asked Judge Maxwell Wiley for a list of all

the witnesses and exhibits from the three months of testimony in the trial. More than 50 witnesses testified. One the earliest was the boy’s mother, Julie Patz, who took the stand in January. The jury ended the day’s deliberations without reaching a verdict and was scheduled to resume this morning. REUTERS

Suspect. Police found weapons and bullet-proof vests in the suspect’s car and at his home. An Algerian man suspected of planning an imminent attack on a church has been arrested in Paris, with police discovering Kalashnikovs, hand guns and ammunition in his possession, top officials said on Wednesday. The 24-year old electronics student, who is also suspected of the murder of a 32-year-old woman, was detained on Sunday after he apparently shot himself by accident and called an ambulance. He was not named. France heightened surveillance of potential suspects and deployed troops to patrol sensitive sites

after Islamist militants killed 17 people in January in attacks on the offices of the Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly and a Jewish food store. He said the man had previously come to the attention of the French authorities as possibly wanting to go to Syria. Police had made checks on him in 2014 and 2015 without finding anything that would warrant further investigation. Paris chief prosecutor Francois Molins said a search of the man’s phones and laptops “revealed that he was in touch with another person, who could be in Syria, with whom he was discussing ways to carry out an attack and who had specifically asked him to target a church.” Le Monde newspaper said police believe that the suspect had tried on Sunday to steal the car of

Pope Francis plans Cuba stop before landing in Philly, NYC Trip. It will be the Argentine pope’s first visit to Cuba as pontiff. Before he gets to Philadelphia and New York City in September, Pope Francis will visit Cuba, the Vatican said on Wednesday. The visit, en route to the United States, will cap his success in bringing the former enemies together after more than half a century of distrust. Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi did not specify how long the stop in Cuba would last, saying only that Francis had accepted invitations made by the Cuban government and the Cuban Roman Catholic Church.

Last December, Havana and Washington announced after 18 months of secret diplomacy brokered by the pope’s diplomats and Canada that the two sides were working to re-open embassies in their respective capitals. “Both President Raul Castro and President Obama recognized and explicitly thanked the Holy Father for his gesture,” Monsignor Jose Felix Perez of the Cuban Catholic Bishops’ Conference, told Reuters in Havana. Cuba had been a focal point for Vatican diplomats ever since Fidel Castro took power in 1959 and restricted church activities in what was a deeply Catholic country. The Vatican’s opposition to the U.S. embargo over the years gave it credibility with Havana

Okay media spin cycle, okay. #slownewsday

After dating for three years — so basically, a decade in Hollywood — “The Amazing Spider-man” stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone went on a “break” two weeks ago. But unfortunately this is no Ross and Rachel situation. According to Us magazine, a source close to the couple says they’re done for good. Apparently, Garfield got a little too into character preparing for his role in “Silence.” “He’s been in a dark place for months getting into the role. He wasn’t being the best partner,” a source tells the magazine. Can someone put this guy in a light-hearted rom-com next? Sheesh!

THINGS ARE GETTING BETTER — IN ‘STAR WARS’ As you all know, the new trailer for “Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens” was released last weekend. As someone who grew up as a “Star Wars” fan, has a website named after a main character and carries a Boba Fett helmet and a lightsaber in her trunk (hey, it’s best to be prepared), I was pretty psyched. And by “psyched,” I mean there was undignified, uglycrying when I watched it. There was just nothing like “Star Wars” when I was a kid. There were certainly very few female characters like Princess Leia. She was bold, she didn’t take orders, she could shoot far better than any Stormtrooper, and she was a galactic senator! The only issue I had was that there was only one of her. I actually remember asking a friend if no one had moms in the “Star Wars” universe when I was little. When the first cast list for the new film came out, there was only one new woman (Daisy Ridley) on it, and seven new men. It’s the reason I started Legion of Leia. So you can imagine the joy I’ve felt as woman after woman was added to the roster. Guys might not think about it that much, but as I’ve said in many an article, representation does matter. I certainly didn’t realize exactly how much it would mean to me, personally, when Lucasfilm President Kathleen Ken-

“Guys might not think about it that much, but as I’ve said in many an article, representation does matter.” nedy spoke at the opening ceremonies for Star Wars Celebration. She was asked which “Star Wars” character she would be, and she replied, “I don’t have many choices. But that’s going to change. ... Going forward with all we’re talking about, there are going to be a lot of wonderful new [female] characters,” going on to mention her daughters and how important this is. I knew it was coming. The cast has been out there for months. However, hearing the female president of Lucasfilm saying this on stage in

front of thousands of people, and even more watching the live broadcast around the world, made me feel like all the hard work — blogs, websites, Twitter posts, books, fan films, etc. — of female “Star Wars” fans have made an impact. Someone is listening, and it means more to me than I can say. May the Force be with you.

What brought Blake Lively back to acting Interview. The former “Gossip Girl” was pretty much done with acting, but the script for “The Age of Adaline” changed her mind. “Age of Adaline” director Lee Toland Krieger claims that Blake Lively came in insisting she was the best person for the title role, but Lively herself begs to differ. “I didn’t say I’m the best person for it, I just said that I really wanted it,” she explains. “I could give you a whole list of people that would’ve been better for it. But I was the most aggressive, I’ll tell you that much.” It makes sense that Lively would approach the role with such vigor, considering she had to cancel the hiatus from acting she’d put herself on following the end of “Gossip Girl” in 2012. “I was on a TV show for six years. We shot 10 months a year,” Lively explains. “I was just exhausted, and I didn’t feel good at it anymore. When you have to do something so much, it’s just muscle memory, and I wanted to take a break. I started my company, Preserve, because I thought, what else do I love? What else do I feel good at? What else can I be creative at while taking a break from acting?” But she didn’t block out Hollywood completely, with scripts still coming in. “I read ‘Adaline’ and thought, I can’t not do this movie. I still wanted to be on a break, but I just thought I have to, have to be in this film,” Lively remembers. “And then because it was such a special movie and such a special experience, I was reading other scripts and thought, how do I live up to that? And then I got pregnant, so I didn’t have to.” It’s a good thing she got over those feelings of inadequacy, too, because the role of

Blake Lively (with Michael Huisman) plays a woman who hasn’t aged in 80 years in “The Age of Adaline.” DIYAH PERA

One more thing

The future And don’t worry, she did find another script that measured up to “Age of Adaline,” as she already has her next starring role carved out: “I’m doing a movie called ‘All I See is You,’ with Marc Forster directing and Jason Clarke,” she says. “It’s about a woman

BLAKE LIVELY GETTY IMAGES

Adaline — a woman born in 1906 who stops aging at age 29 — proved to be full of challenges. “I always look for the closest thing to a character that I’m playing, and I try to meet that person and talk to that person. It’s very hard to meet someone who’s been alive for 100 years, and it’s even harder to meet someone who’s i m m o r t a l ,” Lively admits. “So I thought, O K ,

who loses her eyesight at a young age and then has an experimental surgery and gets her eyesight back, and how it effects their beautiful relationship and their marriage, which was so healthy when she was codependent, but now that she’s not … It’s a very character-driven story.” That should make for some interesting research as well.

when is a woman most defined by? When does she really blossom into who she is? And it’s when they come of age. So if she came of age in the 1920s, I need to capture a woman from the 1920s who has that formality and who is stoic and very proper and very reserved and conservative, and then try to weave in some influence from the ’60s. That’s very, very different from where women came in the Edwardian era. She can’t be alien, so she has to have this timelessness to her and she has to look like a mixture of all these decades, because she wouldn’t just go shopping at Zara and speak like I speak.” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.us

WHERE TO EAT, DRINK & PLAY

Craft your palate Treat your taste buds to the weird and wonderful world of local brews at these five craft-focused bars. EVA KIS A great bar has many components — fun atmosphere, knowledgeable staff, good crowd — but in this city, with its exploding craft beer movement, we think a great beer bar should support local brewers. So we asked Jimmy Carbone of Jimmy’s No. 43 to recommend some of the best bars stocking local favorites and breweries’ latest experiments. One way to know you’re in the right place is the Good Beer Seal, which tells you a bar is independent and keeps the high standards of quality and cleanliness needed to do craft beer right.

Mission Dolores

Crescent & Vine

359 Metropolitan Ave., Williamsburg This place defines a Good Beer Seal bar: a carefully curated, always rotating selection on just six taps, so no mega-drafts need apply. Because it keeps things simple and highlights its selections, it’s one of the bars where new beers are debuted in the city. There’s also a deep list of specialty craft bottles, all served in an atmosphere inspired by a country Belgian bar.

125 Bedford Ave., Williamsburg You can trace the history of NYC’s craft beer via the mugs at this pioneer of the craft bar scene — it started more than 20 years ago. This was the first place to pour some of the modern classics like Sierra Nevada and Anchor Liberty Ale. Their events are not for the faint of heart, with names like Split Thy Skull, and an annual Belgian beer fest in December.

43 E. Seventh St., East Village A former Ukrainian social club built in the ‘80s, it opened as a basement Belgian bar in 2005. With a full menu, it’s a restaurant as well, hosting dinners, authors and foodie pop-ups. Look for a new spring/summer menu coming in May curated by a guest chef. They were on the sour beer trend before it was everywhere, and have hard cider and whiskey menus, too.

249 Fourth Ave., Park Slope Owners the Wiley brothers have a roster of craft beer bars around the city — Great Harry, Glorietta Blady and The Owl Farm — but Mission Dolores is Carbone’s favorite. Amid the quirky decor, the place always has a great draft list across its 24 taps. Get “stranded” in this part of Brooklyn to have a great excuse to spend some quality time at this bar.

25-03 Ditmars Blvd., Astoria The bar manager, Daniel Bronson, is the new force on the city’s craft beer scene. He spearheaded Queens Beer Week, returning for its second year next month. A neighborhood bar with global ambition, it’s got great drafts — and great wines, too. Queens has more breweries than any other borough, and Crescent & Vine always serves its neighbors’ stock. Harboring a new crush MONICA WEYMOUTH @metronewyork letters@metro.us

Since opening late last fall, Pier A Harbor House has proven to be quite the comeback space. Once home to the city’s docks department, the vacant, crumbling, 127-year-old building had never been

open to the public before the team behind The Dead Rabbit set their sights on it. “Pier A is a beautiful, unique Victorian pier and the last of its kind. The building itself is made for hospitality,” says Danny McDonald, a partner in the project who saw something special in the 28,000-square-foot space at the tip of Lower Manhattan. “The location represents a unique bit of geography-meets-history, where the Hudson River and its environment meet the New York harbor.” Pier A’s first floor is already open as a beer hall and oyster bar, serving seafood every which way — raw oysters, steamed

we’re Fumero at The loving: Musket Room

mussels, tuna tartar and a 1.5-pound lobster bake, among others. (There’s also a burger and other usual bar items, but really, get with the theme.) The third floor is reserved for private events, while the second floor opens May 5. Here’s why we’re excited to drop by this spring.

The ultimate al fresco experience There’s outside seating, and then there’s being right on the harbor, away from rush hour and sidewalk traffic. Pier A will really shine once these April showers dry up. Nothing against the 400-some

indoor seats, but we’ll be throwing back Blue Points and brews on the deck, thank you. Look for cookouts and the occasional weekend festival, too.

Sunset happy hours Any time of year, Pier A’s views are second to none: the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor, the Financial District skyline. But now that the sun is setting as happy hour is dawning, we’re calling dibs on a window table. (To be fair, there will likely be enough room for everyone. The layout is extremely group-friendly, should you decide to invite the entire office.)

The second floor Next month, you’ll be able to take things upstairs, where a more formal, Hudson Valleyinspired restaurant will be bookended by two bars. Feel like you’re drinking in the admiral’s quarters inside the dark-paneled Harrison Room. Helmed by Irishman Liam Hendrick, the beer selection is old world-meets-new (Pier A even commissioned its own lager from Brooklyn Brewery) designed to pair with small seafood plates, and a cocktail menu by the Dead Rabbit’s Jillian Vose. At the other end is the Commissioner’s Room, a lounge with waterfront views.

There are more than 70 sauces to try now, though the store will eventually carry over 100 varieties made all over the world (yes, even some with the new king of heat, the Carolina Reaper), from Japan to South Africa. But it doesn’t serve food or drinks (though pairing dinners and cookouts are planned), so taste responsibly. Camp & College Guide

How to plan the perfect summer Camp can help your kids meet new friends and learn new skills. ISTOCK

Compare and contrast: a few things to consider to find the perfect camp for your kid. LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi lakshmi.gandhi@metro.us

How do you know if your child is ready for sleepaway camp? It’s a question that Jill

Tipograph of Everything Summer, a consulting firm that helps parents plan their kids’ summers, often gets from families considering camps. “The first thing is assessing readiness. Is their child physically and emotionally ready for overnight camp?” she asks. “They have to be able to take care of themselves. Hopefully, they’ve also had overnight stays with friends and relatives.” We asked Tipograph,

who has been an independent summer camp consultant for 20 years, for her tips on picking the right camp for your child.

Consider their personality “It’s really important to think about an individual’s personality,” she says. “Just because a friend or parent went to a certain camp doesn’t mean that your child will be happy there.

Talk to your child “Involve your child in your search for a camp,” she adds. “Being part of the process gives them confidence.” Make sure to ask your child how long they’ll be comfortable being away from home. “Do you want a short-term camp [two weeks] or a longer-term stay?”

Every child has different needs.” It’s important to consider how your child responds to instruction as well, says Tipograph. “Do they need individual attention or [are] they more go with the flow?”

Ask lots of questions “Meet with the camp director when you visit,” Tipograph advises. “Do you feel like their philosophy matches yours?

Do you feel in sync with them?”

Think about if it’s time to specialize There are camps out there devoted solely to one subject like theater, music or art if you and your child want to focus on a particular talent. “That’s opposed to a traditional camp, where a child is exposed to a lot of activities like sports, nature and the arts,” Tipograph says.

How summer camp can change a child’s life Playing sports builds both character and friendships. MEGHAN POOLE @metronewyork letters@metro.us

As June quickly approaches, it’s time to think about how you’ll keep your kids busy this summer. Instead of worrying that they will morph into couch potatoes, you may want to send them to camp. Mike Strutt, founder of Kids In Sports, a new summer camp that focuses on athletics, believes summer camp is a valuable and memorable experience. While there are many different types of camps available, sports camps are among the

most popular. “With sports, you’re getting a lot of different things that any parent would want for their child. Parents want their kids to be active and healthy and they want them to have fun and to get fresh air,” Strutt says. We had the opportunity to speak with Strutt about some of the benefits of signing kids up for sports this summer.

Learning life lessons Keeping kids active can prepare them for the real world. “The perseverance and some of the obstacles that they learn how to overcome are like real-life scenarios that will help them face future challenges,” he explains. And he believes that it is

love to plant that seed at a very young age.”

Tearing kids away from screens It’s pretty clear that kids these days are pretty attached to phones, computers, and any other gadgets they can get their hands on. “The earlier you teach children the values of exercise, particularly from sports, the better,” says Strutt. “It’s about getting them moving and running around and working with coaches, listening to instructions, as well as being with other children and making new friends.”

never too soon to teach these values. “The earlier a child learns anything, the better,” he says. “We

Making new friends Summer camp is a perfect opportunity for your kids to socialize and make new friends. Through team-building activities, kids will learn how to work together to accomplish goals and bond with their peers along the way. Strutt believes that friendship is an added bonus to sports and summer camp. For example, he uses “cooperative learning” games with children. In these games, the children work together without much assistance from the coaches. “The whole point,” he says, “is for them to keep building upon themselves.”

4 fun care package ideas Your child will be delighted with their care packages. JOANNE REINAUD @metronewyork letters@metro.us

The camp care package has been part of the sleep away camp experience for generations. But instead of sending the same old treats and extra sunscreen, why not liven things up a bit? Here are some suggestions.

1

Hand tattoos These

temporary tattoos come in many different shapes, from animals to weird creatures, and allow your child to express their creativity and personality.

2

Color coordinated treats Does

your child have a favorite color? Carefully select

items based on their favorite shades and add everything from small stuffed animals to candy.

3

A letter from the family pet Your dog

or cat may be the most missed family member of all. Adding a short note “from” Fluffy or Fido is a nice touch. Write that your pet hopes your child is having fun and that they are looking forward to playing with them again. Make sure to sign off with a paw print.

4

Help preserving memories The

friendships and memories your child makes this summer could last a lifetime. Create a memorythemed pack with a “camp journal,” disposable camera, friendship bracelets to make and an address book so that his or her memories are kept safely.

• Accelerated

Remember, you’ll probably miss them more than they’ll miss you. ISTOCK

Samuel Cunard, born in 1787, founded what is still a major cruise line. Its very name evokes the golden age of trans-Atlantic crossings, when the iconic, original Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary were the way to travel. As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Queen Mary 2 will be sailing into Halifax on July 10. In 1912, one of Cunard’s ships, the Carpathia, rescued survivors of the Titanic disaster (many of those who perished are buried in Halifax’s Fairview Lawn Cemetery). The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (www.maritime museum.novascotia.ca) tells this and other stories.

Welcome to Canada Between 1928 and 1971 more than a million people — refugees, war brides, seekers of a better life — passed through the Pier 21 immigration shed, now home to the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 (www.pier21.ca). Reopening in May 2015 after a major expansion, it provides insight into the contributions those people made to the nation’s culture, economy and way of life.

The major commercial hub of Canada’s Atlantic Provinces, Halifax has great shopping, dining and nightlife, but its long seafaring history continues to underpin the city’s enormous appeal: The remains of a vast hilltop fortress still keep watch over the bay; cruise ships and occasionally tall ships still frequent the harbor; and a salty tang still pervades the air.

This year, Cunard Cruise Lines celebrates its 175th anniversary, and this is just one of many excellent reasons to visit Halifax, Nova Scotia, the birthplace and home of founder Samuel Cunard.

Breathe the sea air The waterfront is lined by historic buildings housing interesting little shops, art and craft galleries, a great farmers market and some of the city’s best restaurants and bars, many

with patios overlooking the water. Festivals, events and street entertainers keep it buzzing spring through fall, and scenic boat trips (including North America’s longest-running saltwater ferry) bring the maritime experience to life. INSIGHT GUIDES | PENNY PHENIX

The building itself looks like a spaceship, and the museum’s aim is nothing less than to tell the history of the world. It’s a lofty ambition, but when you’re still there after several hours, you might decide it has achieved it.

Workers do deserve pay Re: ‘If fast food workers want more money, they should earn it’ (Metro, April 22) Jennifer M. Clark’s letter to the editor is a re-statement of the same idea that has been spouted non-stop by a large number of people. But the problem is, they are just flat-out wrong in every way imaginable. People deserve the pay they can force their employer to pay, no employer pays well because they are nice — so if fast food workers want to cost their employers’ money until it is cheaper to pay them a 2015 wage than try to keep them at 1970’s wage levels, that is called capitalism. Wages SHOULD have gone up along with

inflation, as prices did, but this did NOT happen. And while it would be nice, according to some, to restore slavery by means of wages a century or more out-of-date, it is actually a terrible idea in an economic view. I won’t get into moral or social justice points of view since it would be like Latin to the people who are pro-poverty. Another point on the pay deserved: Do professional football players really deserve millions of dollars for playing a game? Do movie stars deserve millions for playing pretend? Of course not; they get it not because they deserve it or their skills are so uncommon that it is a necessity, but because they held the employers over a barrel until their demands were met. D. Blueshirts one win from next round NHL. The Rangers return to Madison Square Garden with a commanding 3-1 series lead after Wednesday night’s victory. The Rangers showed true grit and determination in their 2-1 comeback overtime win against the Penguins Wednesday night. Kevin Hayes was able to poke a loose puck into the net three minutes and 14 seconds into OT to give the Rangers the win. The Rangers, after battling back from an early deficit in a physical game that pitted two evenly matched teams, are now one win away from advancing to the Eastern Conference Semis. The two teams will tango at Madison Square Garden Friday night at 7 (MSG). Credited on the gamewinner with assists were Carl Hagelin, Martin St. Louis, leaders who helped the Rangers silence the ferocious opposing crowd. The Penguins first snatched the momentum early (on the second shot of the game) as Patrick Hornqvist smacked in a goal just over two minutes into play, letting loose an eruption from

the Pittsburgh crowd, desperate to get back into the series. The Rangers tied things at one after a crazy bounce squeaked by Marc Andre-Fleury. The “dirty” goal would be attributed to Derick Brassard. Brassard has a ridiculous 21 points (12 goals, nine assists) in 21 regular

season and playoff games against the Penguins as a Ranger. There were several spars throughout the competitive game, though no one lost their wits to start a costly full-blown brawl (which would have cost either team bitterly in the playoffs).

The Penguins had a handful of worthwhile opportunities as the clock waned in regulation but they were unable to find nylon, sending the game to an extra frame stuck at one-goal apiece. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

Knicks optimistic

Jackson thinks Knicks can bounce back The Knicks have Carmelo Anthony and not much else on the horizon, aside from a lottery pick in the upcoming draft. But the team also has cap space. Phil Jackson is quite confident that he and Anthony will do all they can to recruit talent to the Big Apple, “I think we have $30-some million” in cap space,” Jackson said, adding he knows how critical the early free agency period from the end of June to the end of July is to his plan. “That’s going to be our challenge. We are a league that’s dominated by personalities, by talent, and getting two or three players with talent changes your direction quickly. We’ve all seen that. … We’ll do our diligence. And I know he [Anthony] is interested [in recruiting]. He’s involved.” It’s not a big secret that today’s NBA stars love playing in the Garden – they just don’t like calling the Garden home for 41 games. There’s a big difference in putting on a show a couple times a season as a marquee road talent, and being an actual member of the Knicks, and hearing the jeers nightly. TONY WILLIAMS

MLS

Red Bulls find ways to win sans stars The “One Percent Derby” is certainly in a state of transition as the once-starstudded tilt between the New York Red Bulls and the Los Angeles Galaxy is lacking, well, some stars. And for this latest incarnation of the Red Bulls team, that’s perfectly fine. Over the past few years, the Red Bulls have been among the biggest spenders in the league, with high-priced, high-profile internationals such as Thierry Henry, Tim Cahill and Rafa

Marquez among others. But this year’s squad is missing that seven-figure salary, headline-grabbing big name and yet, the team sits atop the Eastern Conference with an undefeated record. The Galaxy, as well, have inked big names over the years, like David Beckham and Landon Donovan. The free-spending way of these two teams has led to the “One Percent Derby” moniker, an obvious nod of the head to the elitist quality of these two rosters. But both teams head into this Sunday’s match (5 p.m., ESPN2) in a lower tax bracket. Henry and

Sacha Kljestan has the Red Bulls undefeated. / GETTY IMAGES

Donovan have retired and Cahill has moved on to a payday in China, while Robbie Keane, the Galaxy’s star striker, isn’t quite the draw of those other names. The derby has moved into a different direction, this one lacking the luster of years past. “I don’t know if it’s good or bad for the league,” midfielder Sacha Kljestan said. “I think we still have two very good teams which is important. Yeah, you know Beckham’s not there, Henry’s not there so you don’t have the star power anymore but you still have two of the top teams in MLS going

up against each other on ESPN.” Kljestan is one of the faces of this Red Bulls team, a United States international who might not be a drawing card in the stands but has made quite an impact on this team. He has just one goal since being signed this offseason, but he is already being hailed by head coach Jesse Marsch for how he does the “little things” in making this team click. Three wins and two ties in five matches is the evidence to date that maybe the “One Percent” approach from the Red Bulls in the past isn’t part of their future. KRISTIAN DYER
