Things change. Latrell James understands this, but it doesn’t make the experience of returning to the neighborhood he grew up in — Fields Corner in Dorchester — any less weird. There are new apartment buildings, a new Vietnamese center. A different clerk now mans the counter behind his favorite childhood corner store. Some things are the same, though: the triple-decker on Dakota Street — the one where his parents and four of his five siblings lived in a third-floor, three-bedroom apartment — is still yellow. The neighborhood still provides the backbone of his art; James is a rapper and producer, is preparing to release his debut album, “Twelve,” which focuses on his childhood, adolescence and young manhood between the ages of 12 and 24. In many ways, it’s about this neighborhood, which James, the fourth of six children, moved away from seven years ago, when he was 18. That’s when his family moved to Brockton. “I kind of feel like this area is better than Brockton now. I don’t know what happened. Growing up here it was crazy,” said the 25-year-old James, who now lives not far away from a basketball court where someone was fatally stabbed recently. “We moved out, and the next thing you know every-

Olympics. Amendment to bar public funds fails A Republican-sponsored amendment that would have prevented tax dollars from being used to support cost overruns or to secure bonds associated with potentially hosting the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Boston failed in the House on Monday night.
House lawmakers rejected the amendment on a voice vote. Olympic bid organizers have said they intend to put together a bid without relying on public funding, except for transportation projects already in the state pipeline and federal funds for security. SHNS

It’s apparently enough to make a living out of, but he declined to say what his hourly rate is. He said he gives local artists brutal feedback: if it sucks, he tells them.

thing is livable.” Now, he raps about his childhood, about his decision to remove himself from the more toxic aspects — violence and dealing drugs — of his neighborhood, parting ways with childhood friends in the process. He raps about his parents. His family was among the few he knew growing up where the mother and father — Mary and Greg — were both present. “As a child you don’t really express how you feel to your parents,” he said. “Saying it into the microphone was the most difficult thing for me to do, because I knew once I said it, I couldn’t take it back.” And yes, there are stories of street violence that feature in cliché origin stories of countless rappers across the country. James goes through the anecdotes: His cousin was fatally stabbed in the heart on Valentine’s Day. His mother pulled him out of one school after a body was found nearby. Sometimes, his mother would not let him out to play; it was too dangerous. He pointed out one house, where drug dealers used to live. But there are also happy memories: the court where he learned to dribble a basketball and the hydrant the neighborhood kids used to pop open during the summer. “I always try to revert back to a child when I’m making music. The child has the most creative mind in the world,” he said. “Twelve” will be released on May 12. DANNY MCDONALD @DMacCash

Local lawyer argues in favor of same-sex marriage Mary Bonauto, the local attorney who was instrumental in fighting for same-sex marriage here in Massachusetts, took that fight before the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday. Bonauto, who is the
civil rights project director at the Boston-based Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAAD), delivered oral arguments that could make same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states in the country. The court, according to The Boston Globe, is considering whether state bans on same sex marriage violate the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection.
Reuters reported five of the justices asked her why the court should change a definition of marriage that has existed for millennia, rather than allowing American voters to decide. METRO

Lawyers focus on brother’s Islam obsession Trial. Prosecutors previously cited al Qaeda materials found on Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s computers which claimed bombing was retribution for U.S. military campaigns.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the older brother of Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, changed from a roisterous boxer known for flashy outfits into someone with a bushy beard and drab clothes and obsessed by Islam, following a trip to Russia in 2012, witnesses said on Tuesday. Rogerio Franca, who lived near the Tsarnaevs in Cam-
bridge, told jurors Tamerlan was a partier before a trip to Russia, but transformed into someone more closely resembling a devout Muslim when he returned. “Most of the time he was drunk, most of the time he was high, Franca said of Tamerlan before his six-month trip to Russia’s Dagestan region.
Afterward, Franca said he saw Tamerlan in Boston and he appeared “different — he had a beard, dressed in white, and his wife was covered and submissive. “He asked me, you are not Muslim yet? Franca said. “I never expected he could ask me such a thing. Another man, Brandon Douglas, who trained with Ta-
merlan at a gym in Brighton, said he also noticed changes. “His dress changed. The beard obviously was a pretty drastic departure. Defense attorneys opened their case Monday arguing 26-year-old Tamerlan, who died following a gunfight with police days after the bombing, was the driving force behind the attack. Mayor comes under scrutiny for response to violence Response. Some security experts said the city should have been more prepared for an outbreak of violence. Baltimore’s mayor came under criticism on Tuesday for a slow police response to some of the worst urban rioting in the United States in years with shops looted, buildings burned to the ground and 20 officers injured. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said he had called Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake repeatedly Monday but that she held off requesting the National Guard until three hours after violence first erupted following the funeral Freddie Gray. “The mayor of Baltimore had the city of Baltimore police on the ground. Quite frankly, they were overwhelmed. All the rest of the [boots] on the ground came from us,” the Republican governor said the day after declaring a state of emergency in the largely black city. The death of Freddie Gray gave new energy to the public outcry that flared last year after police killings of unarmed black men in Ferguson, New York City and elsewhere. For nearly a week after Gray died from a spinal injury, protests in Baltimore had been peaceful and the mayor said she wanted to avoid a heavy-handed re-

sponse. After a night of looting and arson that burned 19 buildings and left one person in critical condition, largely peaceful protesters amassed in front of police lines. One burst of violence by a lone man was met by police with pepper spray, sending protesters scattering. “They tore the city down last night, and today we’re trying to rebuild it again,” said Perry Hopkins, who formed a line of men from the community separating police from the crowd. Volunteers armed with brooms cleaned up debris from burned out and looted buildings in the city of 620,000 people. REUTERS

At one point during the arguments in the decorous courtroom, a protester shouted that the justices would “burn in hell” if they backed gay marriage. British crooner Sam Smith is being forced to sit out his upcoming Australian tour because of some rather nasty-sounding voice-related health issues. “I am deeply, deeply saddened to tell my Australian fans [that] I have to cancel my Australian tour,” Smith posted to Instagram. “I have been vocally exhausted for a while now. However, last night in Sydney I had a small hemorrhage on my vocal cords. The doctors have told me I need to fully rest until my vocal cords have healed, otherwise this could become a huge longterm issue.” He also mentioned plans to reschedule the canceled shows before closing with the not-at-all-melodramatic “This kills me.” Get well soon.

Now that you’ve recovered from the sudden death of Patrick Dempsey’s “Grey’s Anatomy” character, it’s time to dig into exactly why McDreamy had to go and slip this mortal TV coil. “Shonda [Rhimes] had no other choice but to fire Patrick. He had been showing up late and was holding up production because he couldn’t remember his lines,” a source
tells Radar Online. “Shonda shouldn’t be blamed. This is on Patrick and no one else.” And apparently Rhimes gave Dempsey a chance to fix his behavior, but he didn’t take it. “There was definitely a lot going on in Patrick’s personal life with the breakdown of his marriage, and Shonda had been very understanding,” the source explains. “He was suspended midseason and was given another chance to get back on track. But when Patrick returned, there was a chip on his shoulder, and the cast was being impacted.” So impacted, as it turns out, that he reportedly didn’t even get a going-away party from his cast mates. And even Katherine Heigl got a going-away party!

And the Sexiest Woman in the World is …
GETTY IMAGES
A British soap star you’ve probably never heard of has received the honor. At least according to FHM, that is. The lad magazine has dubbed “Coronation Street” star Michelle Keegan 2015’s Sexiest Woman in the World after coming in second last year and fourth in 2013. Kendall Jenner takes second place this year, while Jennifer Lawrence, last year’s titleholder, drops to third. The list — which tallies up 100 women — was determined via an online poll, with more than 1 million votes cast. “It’s great to see a hugely talented U.K. actress take the top spot,” FHM editor Joe Barnes says. Sure, fine, but we’re really saying Kendall Jenner is sexier than Jennifer Lawrence? I don’t think I can get on board with this.

Get ’faced with some soused Shakespeare Review. See the Bard’s work as he always intended: with one drunk performer. “S—-faced Shakespeare” might be the playwright’s funniest comedy to date. The latest British import, playing at the Davis Square Theatre, delivers a version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” you won’t soon forget. The cast, on the other hand, may have a very different experience. Each night, the talented troupe of Magnificent Bastard Productions tries to perform a serious production of Shakespeare’s comic tale of four young lovers and the magical fairy Puck. But three hours before curtain time, one of the
actors is randomly selected to get inebriated. The result is a riotous mix of Shakespearean earnestness and sloppy drunken mess. At this performance, Stacey Norris was the lucky drunkard, and yet her character Helena was the only one who didn’t pay a price for her wobbling, booze-fueled missteps. While the others were putting on a show, ’ performance felt like something right out of “I Love Lucy.” Whether it was backstage noise, running commentary that completely disregarded the fourth wall, poking fun at the, ahem, revealing nature of men in tights, or accidentally using then reclaiming the C-word, Norris couldn’t have written a funnier script. But when she managed to focus, you got intermittent glimpses of a really fine ac-
tress who, despite the slurs, has complete mastery of the role. Comedic opportunities abound for each character when it’s their turn to drink. There’s fighting, loving, a chase scene and those moments Puck spreads his magical flower juice on the eyelids of the other men. It’s easy to see how each of these could go horribly right if one of the players is intoxicated. There’s also audience interaction, which is always interesting, given the actor isn’t the only one who’s been drinking. If you want to avoid being part of the show, stay clear of the front row. There’s a reason they call it the bomb row. NICK DUSSAULT @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

remembers. Hart made the wise decision to please her newfound fans, and thus, “My Drunk Kitchen was born. One and a half years after her first upload, Hart was finally making enough money to make her YouTube channel a full-time job. Now, Hart’s face is plastered on ads around New York City: You may recognize her if your commute takes you through Union Square station. She has 1.8 million subscribers on YouTube, a bestselling book and a nationwide volunteer initiative. Hart’s not alone. Tyler Toney of the trick shot YouTube channel Dude Perfect remembers how hard it was for him to make the decision to quit his job as a salesperson to focus on his channel. “It was really scary at the time, but it was really validated for us just a few weeks after because we started hitting on
all cylinders — we had brands knocking down the doors, says Toney. His channel now has 4.45 million subscribers, celebrity fans (and guests) and business partnerships with brands. Zayna Aston, spokesperson for YouTube, says there are thousands of YouTube users making six figures through their channels. YouTube content creators mostly make money through sharing ad revenue with YouTube. It shouldn’t be too surprising that YouTube stars can pave a sustainable career through the online videosharing platform; the website has over 1 billion unique visitors a month. User PewDiePie has more than 36 million subscribers — that’s more than the entire population of Canada. The beauty of the format, though, is that there are no barriers or greenlighting pro-

cesses. “YouTube has democratized access to video creation, says Aston. “It has given anyone who wants one a mouthpiece. Aston says many of the most popular YouTube channels deliver highly targeted
content. “There are creators who say they couldn’t find content they wanted to watch, so they created it, which is why you have such a diversity of creators, she explains. Unlike television shows, YouTube creators are not necessarily attempting to create mass appeal. “I don’t care about having everyone in America like me, says Hart. “I just want to attract people who like what I do. I don’t want to make it mass consumable, ignorant programming.

The top six things new homeowners should know Ken Collier of The Family Handyman tells us how to improve and protect our biggest investment. MONICA WEYMOUTH @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
At first, being a homeowner is an exciting power trip. You can paint with abandon, plow through walls that don’t respect your vision and fire those miserable, outdated cabinets. Fluorescent kitchen lights? Laminate flooring? Zero-flow showerhead? See you never. But unfortunately, your liberated new pad doesn’t come with a building handyman. And now that your landlord is, well, you, there’s more at stake. Before you knock down something you shouldn’t, we checked in with Ken Collier, editor-in-chief of The Family Handyman magazine as well as the new book “100 Things Every Homeowner Must Know.” Here are his top tips for newbie homeowners:
Spring project If you have central air, now is the time to check on it. “A great spring maintenance task is to clean the outside unit,” says Collier. “It will lower your electric bill and lengthen the life of your system, and many people never think to do it.” For instructions, visit FamilyHandyMan.com.
… Or call in a contractor
Chances are, you will have a grease fire at some point, and your natural instincts will fail you miserably. “Don’t try to carry the pan outside and don’t put water on it — both can spread the fire badly,” says Collier. “Just smother the fire with a large lid, pour baking soda on it or use a small kitchen fire extinguisher.”
lot of painter’s tape. Collier recommends stocking up on one- and two-inch wide varieties (the good stuff — no skimping here). “Tape paper to the baseboard to protect the floor,” he says. “Put a strip along the top of the baseboard like a little shelf to keep splatters from landing on the baseboard. Mask your outlets. Mask around windows and door trim. It’s great stuff!”
Don’t be afraid to DIY Think of working on your new home as a bonding experience. One project that appears more difficult than it actually is? Installing a new floor. “It seems like a huge job, but new types of flooring can be as simple to install as snapping LEGO blocks together,” says Collier. “It’s not to say there aren’t difficult floors — carpeting and traditional hardwood and vinyl, for example — but there are thousands of great options in easy-to-install flooring.”
Bonus: How to extinguish a grease fire
Seal and save
Some home projects sound more daunting than they actually are, like installing a floor. ISTOCK
When a project is out of your league, admit defeat and call a professional. Contrary to popular belief, finding a good contractor isn’t difficult. “It’s really simple, but people just avoid doing it,” says Collier. “Ask your neighbors, then ask a pro for references. Services like Angie’s List and Porch are very effective as well.”
Secure your garage Garages are often overlooked when it comes to home security. “The service door is often flimsy and not reinforced well. Once a thief is in the garage, it’s often easy to get inside the house,” says Collier. “Also, people leave their garage-door opener in plain sight in their car.
Thieves sometimes break the car window and use the opener to gain access.”
Meet your new BFF: painter’s tape You don’t have to hire a professional painter — but you do have to buy some painter’s tape. Or rather, a
Your drafty house is leaking money year-round — cool air-conditioned money and toasty heated money. “Work on sealing the leaks and cracks around your doors and windows. They say that in an average house, they add up to the equivalent of having a window open,” says Collier. “Caulk and weather strip do wonders.”

Lighten up with simple DIY curtains. MARIANNE HAYES @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
One creative, super-simple way to spruce up your home for spring is to change out heavy curtains for light, airy drapes. The good news is that letting the light in doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on new decor. Instead, check out these budget-friendly DIY projects that’ll leave your windows looking like they came out of an Anthropologie catalogue.
Bring in the sunshine Swap out heavy winter curtains for lighter ones you made yourself.

Try a burlap spin Burlap isn’t necessarily a fabric that traditionally seems like spring, but (if done right) it can actually give your living room a crisp, fresh feel. Another kicker? It’s a no-sew project that’s relatively inexpensive to pull off. “Our family room had so many windows that I needed to find an inexpensive way to add drapery without breaking the bank,” says Jessica Bruno
of the blog Four Generations One Roof. “I purchased burlap for under $2 a yard and made my own no-sew curtains.” Bruno completed the look with just three and a half yards of burlap, which covered 10 large windows.
Cover them in handwritten messages A Sharpie is all you need to pull off this next look, which uses your own handwriting and some creative messaging. Just be sure to use a permanent marker, not a paint pen. Putting a piece of cardboard under the curtains while writing is also a good idea. “The hardest part is deciding what to write,” says Karen Cooper of Dogs Don’t Eat Pizza. For her kitchen curtains, Cooper decided to write a variety of cooking-related words (like “bake,” “mix” and “stir”) in varying cursives and prints. And if the curtains get dirty over time, washing them won’t smudge the writing. Just throw them in the gentle cycle in cold water.
Give them the ombre look Who says the ombre look only applies to your hair? Achieving an equally edgy fade with your curtains is actually easier than you might be thinking. June Olsen, the creator of Nostalgiecat, got started with white lace curtains she picked up at Ikea. From there, she mixed a few packs of Dylon dye to create varying shades of blue. “This really is as easy as dip-and-dye,” she says. “Just make sure you wear gloves, as I ended up looking like a Smurf after doing mine!” Your best tool in this case is gravity— hang the curtains on a clothesline while the bottom sits in the bucket of dye. This will help create a gradual ombre effect, as opposed to a separation between shades.

Go green at home One Boston real estate firm aims to help people find the greenest homes out there. LINDA CLARKE @MetroBOS

The recent Lumber Liquidators scandal, exposed in a report on ABC’s “60 Minutes,” involved the discount wood company selling toxic Chinese manufactured laminated flooring and caused many to wonder just what’s in the walls, floors and fittings in a home they rent or buy. Commonly used chemicals include formalde-
hyde (carpeting, laminates, cabinetry), phthalates (vinyl tile, wood finishes), toluene (paints, adhesives) and PFCs (carpeting), many of which are suspected of causing fertility problems, asthma, Parkinson’s, allergies, headaches and fatigue. So-called sick buildings are even suspected of causing some cancers. Which is why, 10 years ago, Leland DiMeco founded Boston Green Realty, a real estate company based on Tremont Street in Boston. “When I was in school, there weren’t all these allergies and asthma that’s so prevalent now,” says DiMeco. “A lot of people believe it’s the houses they’re living in. When we started this business, we were ahead of the curve, really, but we weren’t trying to be.

LEED Life LEED certification gives homeowners a sense of a building’s health qualities, but just because it isn’t LEED-certified doesn’t mean it isn’t green. “LEED certification is a wonderful program that sets building plans and codes above traditional standards. It’s third-party verification. But a builder or homeowner might prefer to allocate the cost of certification to adding solar panels or something that will improve the home,” explains DiMeco.
For more information on the work DiMeco does, head to www.bostongreenrealty.com. BOSTON GREEN REALTY
It was just what my wife and I believed in: Living healthier is our personal choice.” DiMeco became Massachusetts’ first certified EcoBroker. DiMeco says the green home business isn’t one size fits all customers, though: “There are different shades of

there are some people who genuinely care about the planet and do it through their own ethical choices,” he adds. It’s hard to think shiny wood floors and smart new cabinetry could be poisonous. “Stains, formaldehyde, paint — there’s so much off-gassing
in new homes,” says DiMeco. But a new generation of homeowner is asking questions. “Generally, we’re finding it’s people in their mid-30s to 40s, who have done their research and found the major benefits of healthier indoor air quality,” says DiMeco of his customers. “The market crash and gas and heating oil prices pushed people into energy efficiency. Even traditional buyers are more into saving money on heating. Green construction is the future.”

C’s with plenty of needs NBA. Three areas of need the Celtics need to address this summer. So the Celtics are out of the playoffs. That’s no surprise. The fact that Boston even made the playoffs as the 7-seed is a bit of a shock in and of itself, and all you have to do is take a look at the roster to see why. There are no All-Stars on this Celtics team — not this season, and probably not in future seasons. They don’t have a dominant big man, and they don’t have a dependable go-to scorer. They traded their once-star point guard and frustrating swingman during the season — and got better. The Celtics have one thing going for them going forward: Brad Stevens. He took a team low on talent and made them believers in him and in one another. But Stevens is not a miracle maker. He’s going to need more talent around him one way or the other if the C’s want to get back to title contention. So how do they improve? Here are some big needs: Do-everything forwards
First thing’s first: Hero ball seems to be out in the NBA. Sure, you’ve got your Lebrons and Westbrooks and Hardens this year, but generally speaking, team basketball is

in. Floor spacing, swinging the ball, being “multiple” (to use a football term) on both ends is where it’s at. The C’s need a swingman-type who can take control at times and defend all over. Unfortunately, the best fits for Boston will be restricted free agents — San Antonio’s Kawhi Leonard, and Golden State’s Draymond Green — and it’s doubtful they’ll leave their current teams. Though also restricted, they could pry Tobias Harris from Orlando.
Atlanta’s DeMarre Carroll is an unrestricted option, though not the star Boston needs. Who’s gonna score?
Just like it would be a dream come true to land Leonard or Green at forward, it would be a dream to land Chicago’s Jimmy Butler at the two-guard. But Butler is also a restricted free agent, and even if C’s offer him the max (they would have to) it’s likely Chicago matches. But there are lots of more
attainable shooting guards out there. The reigning Sixth Man of the Year, Lou Williams, from the Raptors, Portland’s Wes Matthews, and the Spurs’ Danny Green are all strong options. Matthews could come at a discount (injury issues). Go Big!
Boston’s need for big men is obvious. Unfortunately, the three best centers hitting unrestricted free agency are almost certainly staying put —
Memphis’ Marc Gasol, the L.A. Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan, and San Antonio’s Tim Duncan. Greg Monroe is an intriguing option out of Detroit, though. As for power forwards, Kevin Love will remain a target until he signs his next deal. Also keep your eye on the situation in Portland with LaMarcus Aldridge. Bad news came on Monday for St. Louis when ace Adam Wainwright was ruled out for the rest of the season with a torn Achilles. The Cards’ bullpen better be ready.
Though the Dodgers are in first place in the NL West and are 9-1 at home, their rotation is battling major injuries, led by Brandon McCarthy’s torn ligament in his elbow.
