Baltimore prosecutor learned life’s lessons in Boston ‘police house’ Crime. Marilyn Mosby has a Boston background. In a gritty Boston neighborhood not long ago, where people were poor and crime was a problem, there was one threestory shingled residence widely known as “the police house,” or the “House of Po’” for short. It was also where Marilyn Mosby, Baltimore’s 35-year-old African-American chief prosecutor, grew up as the daughter, granddaughter and niece of police officers. Mosby, who took office only in January, stole the spotlight on Friday with her surprisingly swift decision to criminally charge six Baltimore police officers in the death of Freddie
Gray, a 25-year-old black man. Mosby’s quick legal action stood in contrast to cases last year in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City where, after months of investigation, prosecutors said officers had not broken the law in killings of unarmed black men. In her announcement at a news conference in Baltimore, Mosby cited her family’s “five generations” in law enforcement and lauded her “beloved” grandfather, Prescott Thompson, a charter member of the first black police organization in Massachusetts, who died in February after a long illness. The charter was drawn up in the same house in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood. Longtime residents remember the brown house not as a fearful presence but as a gathering place for youth. It

was a place where some remember learning life’s lessons. “I spent half my life in the street and half my life at that house,” said Corey Sinkler, 46. “I was a bad kid, but they saved me.” “Just because they were police, they wouldn’t come out and arrest you if they saw you outside doing something wrong. They would talk to you, and set you straight,” he said. Mosby’s grandmother Marilyn
Thompson, 77, still lives in the house with a big yard surrounded by a chain-link fence. She said her granddaughter had been inspired to get involved in law enforcement at the age of 6. “She had fallen and hurt her leg, and we filed a claim. When she saw the judge, she said she wanted to be one. She was so impressed,” Thompson said. With a degree from Boston College Law School, Mosby began her legal career as a law clerk in the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office and worked her way up as an assistant state’s attorney to the general trial division. During her campaign, she said she had an overall 80 percent conviction rate. Mosby left to work as an insurance company lawyer before seeking the state at-
torney’s job. In the Democratic Party primary in June, Mosby defeated the incumbent with 54 percent of the vote. She went on to trounce her opponent in the November election. “Police brutality is completely inexcusable. I’m going to apply justice fairly, even to those who wear a badge,” Mosby told the Baltimore Sun newspaper last year. Mosby drew cheers from a crowd at the Baltimore news conference where she announced the charges on Friday in the Gray case. She said Gray had suffered a critical neck injury while riding in a police van. Prosecutors charged the driver of the van with seconddegree murder, alleging callous indifference. Gray died later in hospital. REUTERS

A sculpture by Brookline-based artist Janet Echelman was installed over the Rose Kennedy Greenway on Sunday. The art piece will hang over the Greenway through October. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
A fishing net down at the waterfront doesn’t typically draw a crowd, unless it’s a one-ton, 20,250-square-foot multicolored weave suspended 365 feet above the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Inspired by her travels in a fishing village in India, Brookline native Janet Echelman’s vibrant sculpture consists of over 100 miles of rope weaved into over a half million knots. “I went to teach painting in India on a Fulbright and the paints got lost,” Echelmen said. “So I needed to figure something out because I had promised the embassy that I would give an exhibition but I had no materials or tools, so we had to use what we had.” The three voids in the pattern recall the Trimountain of the Shawmut Peninsula,
the largest of the three hills which were razed in the 18th century to fill in the land in the harbor area. The design now represents the reclaiming of the land following the completion of the Big Dig. “I used to take string and do Cat’s Cradle when I was younger,” Echelman said. The 365-foot-tall twine pattern spans 600 feet at its longest length and requires the use of six cranes to lift the fasteners in place. The process for installing the suspended sculpture began in 2013 with designs, proposals and fundraising along with extensive research from structural engineers. Fluid and delicate in appearance, the sculpture puts thousands of pounds of pressure on the exterior of the International Plaza. NATE HOMAN

Boston duo to be arraigned for shooting man shoveling snow Two Boston men are expected to be arraigned Mon-
day on first-degree murder charges in connection with the shooting death of a man who was shovelling snow in February. Donte Henley, 24, of South Boston, and Josiah Zachery, 18, of Hyde Park,
are expected to face firstdegree murder charges in Suffolk Superior Court. Authorities allege they were involved with shooting Kenny Lamour on Feb. 11 as he shoveled snow after a winter storm.
Zachery is also charged with armed assault with intent to murder and unlawful possession of a firearm for allegedly firing at a Boston police officer while fleeing the scene. He was arrested the same
day of the shooting, whereas Henley was arrested about two weeks later after an investigation by police. A Suffolk County Grand Jury returned indictments against both defendants in April. METRO

The lecturer, Jose de Dios Mata, is originally from Spain. As a teenager, he felt a special interest in music and studied flamenco guitar. Later, he worked for the government and for five years was a special agent in the Intelligence Services. In his personal life, he faced a pressing challenge. A relative’s sudden illness as well as his own almost complete loss of hearing due to a congenital lesion, which he was told would require immediate surgery or result in total deafness, forced him to seek a solution. Jose de Dios was introduced to Christian Science by a doctor who encouraged him to explore this system of spiritual healing. Both situations were quickly and completely healed solely through reading Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

In a state of strange laws Massachusetts rules. Pigeons, blasphemy and no swearing on the T. Massachusetts is viewed by much of the country as a bastion of progressive thought. First in the nation to have near-universal health care. First jurisdiction in the country to legalize gay marriage. The only state Nixon didn’t win in 1972. And so on and so forth. But the commonwealth has plenty of weird, backward laws, thanks in large part to the state’s puritanical past. Here’s some of the wackier ones that have graced the state’s law books: It’s illegal to sing part of the national anthem in any public place. That includes theaters, restaurants or cafés. You must sing the whole thing or else face a fine that, by the letter of the law, could reach $100. The law also prohibits any “embellishment or addition in the way of national or other melodies.” Jingoism, thy home is the Bay State. Vince Neil, take note. And don’t even think about scaring those pigeons. Yeah, spooking the rats with wings is also illegal, punishable by “imprisonment for not more than one month or a fine by not more than twenty dollars.” The law harkens back to a time when people would trap pigeons using nets. Something to think about that the next time you get into a staring contest with a clique of Columbidae while on your lunch break in Copley. At one point, being a disobedient child was a capital offense in Massachusetts. In 1646, a bunch of folks had a very literal

and stringent interpretation of the bible. Hawthorne was right: Those Puritans had no chill, man. “I don’t think there’s any evidence anyone killed any children because they were bad, but it was in the early laws of Massachusetts,” said Peter Drummey, a librarian at the Massachusetts Historical Society. That law, according to scholar John R. Sutton, was the genesis of modern juvenile justice statutes. Capital punishment was ruled unconstitutional in the state in 1984. The next time you’re mulling streaking a mass, consider Massachusetts’ blasphemy law. Not only will your great aunt Theresa be mortified, you’ll also be in violation of the state’s blasphemy laws that are still somehow on the books. Denying God, cursing or reproaching him is punishable by imprisonment up to one year and a fine of not more than three hundred dollars. You may also be “bound to good behavior,” whatever that means. Should you interrupt an assembly of people who are meeting for the worship of God, the law calls for possible imprisonment of up to a year and a fine that could reach $1,000. Like most of these laws, many think these laws, if they were ever enforced and challenge, would be found to be unconstitutional. No swearing at Fenway. Unless you’re under 16. Then it’s OK. No, really. “Whoever, having arrived at the age of sixteen years, directs any profane, obscene or impure language or slanderous statement at a participant or an official in a sporting event, shall be punished by a fine of not more than fifty dollars.” We are all criminals. Whoever wrote that has not experienced the maddening roller coaster that is a Clay Buchholz start. Don’t swear on the T, either. Per state law: Whoever, in or upon a railroad carriage, steamboat or other public conveyance, is disorderly, or disturbs or annoys travelers in or upon the same by profane, obscene or indecent language, or by indecent behavior, shall be punished as provided in section forty. Protest. Baltimore police arrested at least a dozen people on Saturday for violating the curfew. The mayor of Baltimore on Sunday lifted a night curfew imposed on the city last week to stem a spate of looting and arson that followed the funeral of a young black man who died from injuries suffered while in police custody. Mayor Stephanie RawlingsBlake said she believed sufficient calm had returned to allow her to end the 10 p.m.-5 a.m. curfew, which took effect last Tuesday after protests over the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray turned violent on Monday. “My goal has always been to not have the curfew in place a single day longer than was
necessary,” the mayor said. “I believe we have reached that point today.” The mayor said the Maryland National Guard would begin withdrawing from the streets over the next week. The surprise announcement on Friday by the city’s chief prosecutor that she was bringing criminal charges against the six police officers involved in Gray’s arrest has helped to defuse outrage over his death. The protests in the mostly black city of 625,000 have been a reprise of nationwide anger that erupted last year after the deaths of unarmed black men in confrontations with police in Missouri, New York and elsewhere. “What we saw over the past few days is not just the resiliency of our city, but also our communities coming together,” the mayor told a news conference. “We want to heal

our city.” Republican Gov. Larry Hogan welcomed the decision by the Democratic mayor, who had faced criticism for what some saw as a slow initial response to Monday’s violence. He said an additional 1,000 police officers and 3,000 National Guard troops had been brought in to help keep the peace but were now going home. Hogan was among those who expressed concern over the financial impact of the curfew, which forced bars and restaurants to close early. REUTERS
Baltimore’s downtown Inner Harbor district, a tourist destination, resembled a ghost town on Friday and Saturday nights, normally its busiest times. “Baltimore curfew is seriously hurting businesses glad to see it lifted,” wrote someone on Twitter using the name God First. But many tweets accused authorities of having applied the curfew selectively and mostly in black neighborhoods. Asked to respond to criticism that the curfew was enforced more rigorously in black neighborhoods than elsewhere, a Baltimore Police spokesman said law enforcement was concentrating resources in areas of greatest concern. “Our constitutional and moral obligation is to work to keep the city of Baltimore safe,” Captain J. Eric Kowalczyk said at a media briefing. Baltimore residents praised the decision by prosecutor Marilyn Mosby to charge one of the officers involved in Gray’s arrest with murder and five others with lesser crimes. Mosby said the state medical examiner ruled Gray’s death a homicide. She said he was unlawfully arrested and the officers repeatedly ignored his pleas for medical help while he was handcuffed, shackled and lying face down in the back of a police van. REUTERS

Josh Trank probably not celebrating Star Wars Day today
1 3
It’s May 4, adorably known as “Star Wars Day” — “May the fourth be with you,” get it? — but all is not sunny and celebratory in the galaxy far, far away. Director Josh Trank announced over the weekend that he had “made a personal decision” to step down from helming a 2018 “Star Wars” spin-off film, but the move comes after months of rumors about his “erratic” behavior while directing this summer’s “Fantastic
Four” reboot. “If you’ve got someone who can’t answer questions or who isn’t sure or is hiding, that’s not good,” a source tells the Hollywood Reporter. And there was something about his dogs being terrible. Sources say Simon Kinberg, producer of both “Fantastic Four” and the in-development “Star Wars” film, reported back to Lucasfilm about Trank’s troubling behavior, leading to the split. So … happy Star Wars Day?

As you might have heard, Kate Middleton — well, make that Catherine Elizabeth Mountbatten-Windsor, Duchess of Cambridge — gave birth to her second child, a girl, on Saturday. That’s the first princess born into the royal family in 25 years, by the way. The royal couple has so far not announced what the newborn girl’s name is, which means we’re living in that glorious, heady and
fleeting time when she could theoretically be called anything. And you know what that means — time for some baseless speculation! Sure, the oddsmakers over in Great Britain are heavily favoring either Charlotte or Alice, and a lot of sentimental folks are hoping for Diana, but we have some suggestions of our own for Will and Kate to consider. We hereby dub the latest addition to the royal

David Beckham’s 40th birthday bash in Morocco also served as an impromptu reunion for the Spice Girls — well, most of them, at least. Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham marked the occasion with a Twitter photo from Marrakech featuring herself, Geri “Ginger Spice” Halliwell, Emma “Baby Spice” Bunton, Melanie “Sporty Spice” Chisholm and … Eva Longoria? The original Scary Spice, Mel B, was apparently unable to make it to the party due to “America’s Got Talent” obligations, so the girls apparently just grabbed the nearest suitable substitute to stand in. For the record, if the girls want to go on tour with Longoria as the new Scary Spice, I’m all for it. Zig-a-zig-ah, indeed.

“Sons of the Harpy,” the latest episode of “Game of Thrones,” is light on forward momentum and heavy on people getting stabbed to death in fight scenes. It’s a bloody, kinetic hour of TV.
Episode MVPs The meatiest chunks of “Sons of the Harpy” took place in King’s Landing, where Cersei Lannister militarized a group of religious fanatics called the Sparrows and pointed them toward the Tyrell family as revenge for trying to push her out of Tommen’s life. While this might look like a win for Cersei, she may come to regret handing the Sparrows so much power. Cersei has always had a tendency to pull the trigger before aiming the gun, and without Tywin or Tyrion around to rein her in, there’s no telling whom the bullet might hurt. Speaking of Tyrion, he’s trapped on a boat with Jorah Mormont, his kidnapper. We only get a brief scene, but it’s

bulbs, avoided using them due to high electricity costs. I was stunned that this issue had become such a severe roadblock to the villagers: It prevented students from studying and inhibited women from working at home. I decided to make a change that summer and implemented CFL bulbs in 12 households.
How did you finance your project? I carried out the project on a very small scale in 2010 with 10 families and purchased and provided bulbs through my own pocket money. In 2014, Brighter To-
day was one of the winners of the Social Venture Challenge and named a Resolution Fellow at the Clinton Global Initiative University Conference. When we began on the groundwork during the summer of 2014, we were lucky enough to partner with Philips Lighting — who has sponsored 100 percent of the CFL bulbs since then.
How do you manage your project in India from New York? We have an on-the-ground team of 14 people who facilitate the process of collecting and implementing CFL bulbs, including village leaders and volunteers.
What are your hobbies, outside of saving the world? Baking and photography.
What’s next Brighter Today has one blind spot: villages that don’t have access to electricity at all. To help address that problem, Prakash has been working with Philips on a solar panel prototype to bring “free, clean, sustainable power that will light up a home for a lifetime,” she says. In addition to 24/7 lighting, this new venture, called Light for Life, is also working on a station for recharging mobile phones using daylight, a plastic bottle, bleach and water solution, solar panels and LED bulbs. “The device has been assembled with local materials readily available, and it’s been tested for nine months with encouraging results,” says Prakash. “It requires no maintenance, is easy to install and has zero running costs.” Sounds like another winner. Three A+ experts tell us their secrets to surviving finals week without breaking out the power drinks. JULIA WEST @MetroBOS

It’s finals season, but that doesn’t mean you have to stock up on Red Bull or camp out at the library for the next week. Freaking out? Try these three expert tips on prepping for your year-end exams and tackling those last papers, and you’ll not only get aces, you’ll get some sleep, too.
Organize Step one: organize and prioritize. Know your exam schedule so you can plan which tests to study for first. For classes that have a final paper in lieu of a test, chipping away at it a little at a time is much better than writing it all the night before it’s due. Annie Brown, an English major and writing tutor at McDaniel College in Maryland, tells her students to turn the paper-writing process into a series of tasks, from researching and outlining to drafting and finalizing. “On days when I know I need to complete a

the exam. “Go through each chapter of a book, or through your notes, and make up a test like an instructor would, says Carmen Christopher, director of the Learning Center at Meredith College in North Carolina. “Then, with no books or notes beside you, take the test. Just be sure you’re making a point to learn the material and not just memorizing the answers to your practice questions.
Sleep Turns out enough rest, and not the token all-night study session, may help your odds of scoring an A. “Never underestimate the value of a good night’s sleep,â€? says Linda Gorman, a senior at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University. “If you’re thinking about cramming all night, it’s not always a good idea. Don’t have a cow
Focus on how Jenner used his wife
Most cows spend their lives chained on a concrete floor, with no access to the outdoors. Each year, they are impregnated artificially to keep the milk flowing. When their production drops, around four years of age, they are turned into hamburgers. This Sunday, let’s honor motherhood and our natural compassion by replacing cow’s milk and other dairy products, all laden with fat and cholesterol, with delicious, healthful, cruelty-free nut or soy-based milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream. These are available in every supermarket.
We all look forward to this Sunday, May 10, when we celebrate Mother’s Day and the cherished bond between mother and child. Ironically, dairy cows — worldwide symbols of motherhood — never get to see their babies. The newborn calves are torn from their mothers at birth and turned into veal cutlets, so we can drink the milk that nature designed for them. The distraught mothers bellow for days, hoping for their return.
I could care less what gender Bruce Jenner wants to be. Yes, when he won the gold at the Olympics it pumped us all up. But my view of him changed when he divorced his wife Chrystie Crownover. Why did I feel that way? Because I remembered that the only reason Bruce got a shot to become a national “hero” was because his wife worked as a flight attendant to pay the bills while

Bruce trained six to eight hours a day when not half-heartedly trying to sell insurance! Without the dedication of the wife he divorced, he never would have won his gold. Instead of trying to glorify Jenner’s confused leanings maybe the press should focus on how he used his first wife. To me that is a much bigger issue! JOSEPH DUPONT, VIA EMAIL

Pac Man cries injury After Manny Pacquiao lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. by unanimous decision Saturday night, news broke from Pacquiao’s camp that he suffered a right shoulder injury two weeks ago. The injury was so severe that Pacquiao considered postponing the fight, according to reports. Upon hearing that Pacquiao said he was injured during the fight, Mayweather told ESPN that both of his hands and shoulders were injured “but I always find a way to win.”

Pats toe the ‘line’ in draft NFL. The Patriots addressed needs on the line of both sides of the ball this past weekend. The NFL Draft has come and gone and the New England Patriots have 11 new players to show for it. There were plenty of needs going into the draft, and the Patriots addressed most of them. The Pats passed up on an opportunity to bring on some cornerbacks early in the draft, instead focusing on the defensive line. The hope? Get to the quarterback before he has the chance to test Patriots’ cornerbacks. Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner aren’t the only key defenders New England lost over the offseason. They also lost defensive captain and nose tackle Vince Wilfork. That’s why the Patriots took Texas defensive tackle Malcom Brown with the 32nd overall pick. Brown stands at 6-foot-2, 320 pounds, and most mock drafts had him going well before the 32nd pick, so it looks like the Pats got a bit of a steal. So what stands out about Brown? His versatility. Despite his size, Brown has played all over the defensive line in college. “He’s a guy that’s played inside, on the nose, all the way outside to the five-technique, kind of everywhere in between,” Bill Belichick said. “He’s been moved around a little bit: played a little more outside this year, a little in Coach

2 and Day 3, drafting Oklahoma defensive end Geneo Grissom in Round 3 and Arkansas defensive end Trey Flowers in Round 4. Sticking with the theme, Grissom is also a versatile, athletic type, playing on the end and also at linebacker at Oklahoma. Flowers also appears to be a versatile presence on the edge, and Belichick mentioned his leadership and toughness. In the second round, the Pats surprised some by taking a safety, Jordan Richards, out of Stanford, but Belichick raved about his abilities at
both safety spots as well as his communication on the field. He also sees Richards as a big part of the special teams unit, something Belichick stresses the importance of year after year. Of course, New England wouldn’t go an entire draft without taking a couple Tom Brady protectors. They drafted Florida State guard Tre Jackson and Georgia Tech guard Shaq Mason in the fourth round. “Probably pretty contrasting styles,” Belichick said of the two linemen. “Of course Tre’ [Jackson] played in a pro-type
offense with [Jameis] Winston, the quarterbacking and all the things he did at Florida State, whereas Shaq [Mason] played in an offense that was obviously very run-oriented and did a lot of run blocking. [He’s an] aggressive, very athletic player.” The Pats also drafted Navy long-snapper Joe Cardona in the fifth, Mississippi State linebacker Matthew Wells in the sixth and Arkansas tight end A.J. Derby in the sixth. JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us

A-Rod hatred keeping rivalry alive The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry certainly isn’t what it once was. It’s two third place and two fifth place finishes in the AL East for the Red Sox in the last five years, mixed around a World Series win in 2013, while the Yankees have two seconds and a third with two first-place finishes in that span. When the Red Sox are good, the Yankees are
bad, and vice versa. The main players in the rivalry from the mid-2000s are all gone — no more Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, Bernie Willams, Jorge Posada and no more Jason Varitek, Pedro Martinez, Kevin Millar and Trot Nixon. But, this weekend at Fenway Park may have been an indication that the rivalry isn’t quite dead yet, and there’s one player keeping it alive: Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez has always been hated in Boston, and even more so follow-

ing his suspension for PED use. That hate came alive in August of 2013 when Ryan Dempster
drilled Rodriguez with a pitch after three straight inside fastballs. Dempster and most of the Red
Sox team that year were purists of the game, and they sent a message to Rodriguez. This past weekend, Rodriguez stepped to the plate as a pinch-hitter in a 2-2 game Friday night and the boos he received were as loud as any in he past. “You usually don’t hear the difference, but that boo was pretty intense,” Rodriguez said afterward. “It was pretty passionate.” Rodriguez got the last laugh, though, as he lined
a solo home run into the Monster seats to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead, and ultimately a 3-2 win. It was also the 660th home run for his career, which tied him for fourth place on the all-time list with Willie Mays. In not much of a surprise, the fan who caught the ball, a Red Sox fan, reportedly won’t give the ball back without getting any money from Rodriguez. He was offered memorabilia, but he said he wanted only money. RYAN HANNABLE

Sputtering Sox welcome Rays to town before big road dates next week The Red Sox continue their homestand Monday at Fenway (7 p.m., NESN) as the Tampa Bay Rays will be in town for a three-game set. The Rays, projected to be basement dwellers in a subpar AL East, are staying afloat as they own a 13-12 record on the year. Clay Buchholz (1-3, 5.76 ERA) will get the ball for the Red Sox Monday night against Tampa Bay and the Rays will counter with Jake Odorizzi (2-2, 2.41 ERA). Rick Porcello (2-2, 5.34 ERA) is expected to start for the Sox on Tuesday night and in the series finale Wednesday, Justin Masterson (2-0, 4.71 ERA) will toe the rubber for Boston. The Sox will be without catcher Ryan Hannigan until July after he had to have hand surgery following a ball ricocheting off his hand last Friday night against the Yankees.
