Sandra Lee reveals she has breast cancer Health. The TV chef is urging women to get mammograms earlier in life, but an expert says it’s not so simple. In an effort to encourage women to get mammograms early in life, chef and television personality Sandra Lee, who is the girlfriend of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, announced Tuesday that she has breast cancer. Lee, 48, who went public with her story during an emotional interview with Robin Roberts on “Good Morning America,” said she received the diagnosis in late March, and has already had a lumpectomy. Lee is preparing for a second surgery, and said doctors recommended a double mastectomy and radiation. “Both the radiologist and the doctor said, ‘You’re a ticking time bomb.’ And they both said, ‘I would just get them both done.’” “It was just a normal mammogram,” Lee said. “They recommend that women don’t even have their first mammogram until they’re 50. If I would have waited, I probably wouldn’t be sitting here,” Lee told Roberts. Lee said she wants her story to encourage younger women to get mammograms earlier than the recommended age, which ranges from 40 to 50. But Mary Solomon, director of Project Renewal’s ScanVan, which provides free breast cancer screening for women in New York City, said a mammogram might not be the best course of action for women under 40. “This tool has limitations,” Solomon said, explaining that low-dose X-rays do a better job of detecting abnormalities in the fatty breast tissue of women over 40, not the dense breast tissue of younger women. “It concerns me that young women may get a false sense of security.” Women with a fam-

ily history of breast cancer should speak with their doctors about what age to start screening. A general rule is about 10 years before the woman’s family member developed breast cancer. Solomon said doctors might recommend an MRI or sonogram over a mammography in women in their 20s and 30s. “What I want women to understand is that although there is always a risk of developing breast cancer, as we grow older it increases dramatically,” Solomon said. Cuomo said after Lee’s announcement that he was “devastated” by her diagnosis and plans to take time off to help her recover. “Sandy is young for her diagnosis, she has no family history, she is healthy and had no symptoms or signals that she was in danger. She has been diligent about going for checkups and thankfully this was detected in the early stages,” Cuomo said. “While she has kept her illness private until now, Sandy has bravely decided to speak openly about her illness in order to remind women of the potentially lifesaving power of early detection. I fully support her decision.” WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

Speaking out
Lee on early detection “They say there’s an incredible amount of women in their 20s and 30s being diagnosed. They’re telling these girls to wait until they’re 50. I don’t know who could do that in good conscience. What is your message? Girls have to know. Girls in their 20s and 30s, they have to know. I don’t want women to wait. If it saves one person, makes one more person getting a mammogram. If they’re at home watching this, don’t watch this TV. Pick up the phone and call your doctor and get your rear end in there and get a mammogram right now.”

Your allergy hell isn’t getting any better Get used to it. An allergy expert explains why New York is sneezing and coughing more than usual this spring. Feeling a little sniffly lately? If you look around, you’ll probably notice more runny noses and red eyes than usual at this time of year. “I feel terrible,” said Bill Thompson, 43, from Brooklyn. “It’s really bad at night when I’m trying to sleep.” Medical experts say allergies are getting worse over time, partly because of seasonal changes tied to climate change, increased air pollution, rises in carbon dioxide that encourage some plants to produce more — and stronger —

pollen and lowered immune system responses thanks to people using more antibiotics. “You’re going to be subject to a global increased prevalence of allergies,” said Dr. Cliff Bassett, medical director at Allergy & Asthma Care of New York. Bassett is also on the faculty at the NYU School of Medicine and Weill Cornell Medical College. This year, we’re in the midst of an especially difficult round. The late arrival of spring means we’re dealing with the lethal combination of tree pollens and grass and plant pollens being released at the same time — usually the different kinds of pollen would be unlikely to hit us all at the same time. Bassett said telling people to simply stay indoors is unrealistic. He agrees with the idea of pretreatment, taking medications early to prevent the need for stronger and more expensive medication later, and getting indoor plants that help clean the air, like English ivy, ficus plants,

If they’re out during the day, we want them to shampoo their hair at night, wash their face to prevent transferring all the pollen back into their bedroom and so forth.” This week, New York can expect pollen counts above 10 — putting them in the high category — dipping a little bit to 8 in time for Saturday. Serial killer
Seven bodies in Conn. tied to one suspect The words from the top cop in New Britain, Connecticut were chilling. “The total number of bodies recovered at this time is at least seven,” Police Chief James Wardwell said Monday. Cops had found the remains of four women in recent weeks in the same wooded area where the remains of three women were found in 2007.
They were 53-year-old Diane Cusack, 23-year-old Joyvaline Martinez and 40-year-old Mary Jane Menard. One of the newly found victims was Melanie Ruth Camilini, a mother of two last seen in Waterbury in 2003, Reuters reports. The other three victims’ remains were not identified as of deadline. Police said the killer poses no danger to the public. Chief State Attorney Kevin Kane would not say if the person was in police custody. JOHN A. OSWALD

Union Square. Uneasy park goers spoke to Metro. New York Police continued the hunt Tuesday for a man accused of hitting two women in the head with a hammer in two separate attacks near Union Square on Monday evening. The first assault happened when the suspect approached a 28-year-old woman who was sitting on a bench in Union Square around 7:30 p.m. The man, who has not been caught, took a hammer out of his bag and hit her in the head. She was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital in stable condition. About 10 minutes later, on West 17th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues, a 33-year-old woman was hit in the back of her head. She was treated for a
scalp injury and was later listed in stable condition at Lenox Hill Hospital. The suspect believed to be responsible for both attacks is a black male in his 30s with a medium build. He was wearing a black jacket, baseball hat, dark jeans and black sneakers, and was carrying a backpack. The man might be linked to a third hammer attack earlier in the day. A man was hit in the head with a hammer around 2 p.m. in the area of Sixth Avenue and 35th Street. Police are investigating if that attack is related. “That sounds really bizarre … really scary,” said 19-year-old student Tori Mumtaz, who was enjoying the park Tuesday afternoon. “That’s actually really frightening.” Mumtaz said she will definitely be looking over her shoulder after learning of the attack.

Park goer Leslie Leon, 17, was also shaken. “This is my first time hearing about it, but I’m scared. Why is he doing that?” Police released a surveillance photo of the suspect. someone who said Apperson told him that he had just shot at Zimmerman. Apperson’s attorney, Mark NeJame, told WFTV news in Orlando that his client made initial statements in a 911 call and to law enforcement at the scene. Chris Christie bashes Obama and the Fed Election in 2016. Recent opinion polls show Christie behind other Republicans. Possible Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie on Tuesday said the policies of President Barack Obama and the Federal Reserve had widened the gulf between rich and poor. Christie, who is governor of New Jersey, said Obama had failed to curb spending and that his regulatory policies had led to stagnant growth. As for the U.S. central bank, he said that while middleclass families struggled, the Fed had boosted stock prices, which benefited people who were already wealthy. Christie, who has yet to say whether he will run in the November 2016 election, detailed
an economic plan he said would simplify the tax system, lower tax rates for corporations and eliminate payroll taxes for those over 62 and under 21. Christie also pledged to revoke rules and executive orders issued by Obama that he deemed “egregious and unlawful.” Obama, a Democrat, cannot seek another term as president. Christie was considered a Republican 2016 favorite until the “Bridgegate” scandal in which transportation and state officials were alleged to have engineered a traffic jam as political punishment. New Jersey’s economic recovery has lagged that of its neighbors and the nation. The state also faces a large public pension gap and has seen its credit rating downgraded a record nine times since Christie took office in January 2010. REUTERS

Republican Richard Shelby has made regulatory relief and financial regulation reform his top priorities. Shelby wants to have one comprehensive bill to bring to the Senate floor, an approach that the committee’s top Democrat, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, opposes. After trying to bring the two sides together,
Shelby broke off talks with Brown when an agreement could not be reached, as the Ohio Democrat wanted to limit the bill to relief for small banks and credit unions. Deaths. Most of the reported fatalities were in villages and towns east of Kathmandu. The second powerful earthquake in less than three weeks spread panic in Nepal on Tuesday, bringing down buildings weakened by the first disaster and killing at least 66 people, including 17 in neighboring India and one in Chinese Tibet.
The new 7.3-magnitude quake was centred 47 miles east of the capital in a hilly area close to the border with Tibet, according to coordinates provided by the U.S. Geological Survey, and unleashed landslides in Himalayan valleys near Mount Everest. Villagers who watched their homes collapse said they only survived because they were already living in tents. Aid workers reported serious damage to some villages in the worst-af-
fected Charikot area and said some people were still trapped under rubble. Witnesses said rocks and mud came crashing down remote hillsides lined with roads and small hamlets. “We still don’t have a clear view of the scale of the problem,” said Dan Sermand, emergency coordinator at medical NGO Medecins Sans Frontieres, which surveyed the area by air and saw multiple landslides. US Marine helicopter with eight aboard missing in Nepal A U.S. Marine Corps helicopter was declared missing on Tuesday with six Marines and two Nepalese soldiers aboard as it was ferrying rice and tarps to earthquake victims in rugged terrain in Nepal, near a town hardhit by the latest deadly aftershocks. Army Colonel Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, said reports from the ďŹ eld indicated the helicopter’s crew was overheard talking about fuel problems before U.S. military oďŹƒcials lost contact with the light attack helicopter. Internet search company Google Inc.’s self-driving cars have been involved in 11 accidents but have not been the cause of any over the last six years since the project began, the program’s director said on Monday. A team of drivers that is testing the fleet of more than 20 vehicles has driven 1.7 million miles so far. “Not once was the self-driving car the cause of the accident,” Chris Urmson said in a post on
technology news website Backchannel’s blog Medium. No one was injured in the accidents, Urmson added. The cars had been hit from behind seven times, mainly at traffic lights, with a majority of the accidents being on city streets rather than on freeways. “We’ll continue to drive thousands of miles so we can all better understand the all-too-common incidents that cause many of us to dislike day-to-

Sarah Jessica Parker trolls ‘Sex and the City’ fans for self-promotion
There goes Sarah Jessica Parker, getting “Sex and the City” fans’ hopes up once again. This week, the actress posted a photo to Instagram of herself in a sleek white dress making a run from Bloomingdale’s in very Carrie Bradshaw fashion, along with the caption, “I guess the cat’s out of the (little brown) bag. As usual, we will keep you posted on every detail as we are able. I’m under strict gag order until then.” The cryptic message sent some fans into a tizzy that a third “Sex and the City” movie might materialize, but no. It was just to tease the department store carrying her shoe line, SJP Collection, starting in June. Hey, how come no one ever thinks her stunts are about a possible “I Don’t Know How She Does It” sequel?

GOSSIP Justin Bieber has made a career of things happening to him too fast and too early, so why should we be surprised that he thinks he’s already completed his redemption arc from bratty douche-prince to reformed, soulful sensitive man? The Biebs graces the cover of Seventeen magazine this month — and I can’t tell if that’s a step up or a step down from Men’s Health — to talk about how much he’s changed. “I was rebelling a little bit. I was getting cockier and cockier. I didn’t have people to check me. I looked back, and I was disappointed in myself,” he says, reflecting on his tumultuous 2014. “You have to own up to the mistakes. You have

to say, ‘I’m sorry if I’ve let you down.’ I always want to be honest and let people know that those mistakes aren’t who I am. Who I am is someone who really cares about people.” Here’s the thing, though, Justin: The more you have to go out of your way to tell everyone how much you aren’t a jerk, the less believable it sounds. Speaking of cleaning up his image, Bieber posted an attempt at a sweet Mother’s Day message to his mom, Pattie Mallette, saying, “If it wasn’t for this woman, let’s just say I would have had a way longer stupid phase.” You know what’s super-adorable? That he thinks that phase is already all over and done with.

The ‘Full House’ cast turns on the Olsen twins
So Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are most likely totally not going to be a part of the “Full House” relaunch Netflix is cooking up, “Fuller House,” but you know what? They’re not welcome on it anyway. “Everyone is thrilled about getting to reprise their roles. Well, except for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen,” a source tells Radar Online. “They told producers that they do not feel that returning to the show is in their best interests. But quite frankly, no one really wants them to come back. The rest of them have remained a family since the show ended, but no one can really tolerate Mary-Kate or Ashley. Everyone kind of knew that this would happen though.” So there you go.

It’s actually been a good long while — since 2008’s “Milk,” to be exact — since Gus Van Sant has made anything worthwhile and since 2007’s “Paranoid Park” that he’s made anything great. If nothing else, his latest should be beautiful, unfolding as it does in Japan’s “Suicide Forest,” where two men (Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe) run into each other while individually looking to take themselves out.

Our most anticipated Cannes film finds Yorgos Lanthimos, director of the genius “Dogtooth,”
rounding up a dreamy international cast — including Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Lea Seydoux, John C. Reilly, Ben Whishaw and more — for another fit of highconcept absurdity. The bizarre hook here is the depiction of a dystopian future in which people are given a small window of time to pair off; if they don’t, they are turned into animals and released into the wild.

John C. Reilly pops up in a second international production, this time opposite Salma Hayek as a king and queen in this battering ram of 17th-century folk tales, told by “Gomorrah” filmmaker Matteo

Reality TV is not going anywhere Television. Reality guru Rob Lee shares where he thinks the format is going — think mobile. Producer Rob Lee has spearheaded more than 500 hours of scripted and unscripted programming over the course of his career, including standouts like “Millionaire Matchmaker, “America’s Best Dance Crew, “Euros of Hollywood and “Blowout, so he knows a thing or two about what makes for successful reality TV.
The reality genre is here to stay: “Despite the rise of scripted drama in particular, reality and unscripted television is not going away. The economics alone, plus the fact that there is a great demand
for it across demographics, make it a staple of our television viewing spectrum, Lee explains. “It ain’t going away, but it’s going to morph in a lot of different ways. And at the end of the day, it’s most prolific in the places that can finance it most effectively and simply, but that model is fluid and changing all the time.
The formula
What makes a great reality star?
The future is in mobile: “Anybody who’s starting off in reality TV has to focus on mobile, Lee says. “That’s the touchstone to everything, because the younger generation still is weaned on and used to watching so much, if not all, of their programming on their smartphone device.

Everything’s going ROB LEE to collapse in terms of the digital spectrum anyway in how we’re going to be viewing television.
Why he’s been resisting digital himself: “The fact of the matter is, because the economics haven’t really made

a lot of sense yet for me, I am still not pitching to the digital marketplace to a large degree, Lee says. “If I’m looking at producing in that world, I’m still looking at something shorter than a halfhour show. “It’s that unpredictable, big, somewhat crazy personality, but mixed with brilliance and great professionalism and talent,â€? Lee explains. “Years ago, Bravo wanted to do something with an interior designer. [‘Millionaire Matchmaker’ star] Patti Stanger is a very outspoken, volatile, extreme personality, but she is smart as hell, the ultimate truth-teller, and she really is a matchmaker, and she knows her stu. Sure, the smart reality TV person knows how to turn the craziness up or down, but if it’s still not who they are authentically, the audience smells it, and they will not accept it.â€?

Fans may be mourning the cancellation of “The Mindy Project, but just because the show isn’t being renewed doesn’t mean you’ll be seeing any less of Mindy Kaling. The actress/producer isn’t one to sit still for long, and one of the projects she has in the works is her second book, “Why Not Me? While it won’t be coming out until Sept. 9, here’s what we already know:

It will have more hilarious stories straight from her personal life. The success of Kaling’s first

CASSEY HO www.youtube.com/user/ blogilates THE NO. 1 FITNESS INSTRUCTOR ON YOUTUBE (AKA BLOGILATES), DVD STAR AND THE AUTHOR OF “HOT BODY YEAR-ROUND” IS POPULAR WORLDWIDE FOR HER INCREDIBLY EFFECTIVE AND UNIQUE POP PILATES WORKOUTS.
THREE EASY WAYS TO GET SLIM THIS SPRING The world is waking up all around us as spring comes into full bloom. If you’re feeling like it’s time for a new you, too — like by losing weight or getting stronger — the way to do it is making small changes. Here are three ways to get started.
Start your morning with this quick ab workout:
Find a workout that you love Exercise should not feel like a chore. It should be something that you look forward to. And guess what? What works for one person may not work for another. Whether it’s dance, yoga, Pilates, CrossFit or running, the workout that you look forward to is the one that will change your body. The less focused you are on the act of losing weight and the more focused you are on the activity, the easier and quicker those pounds will drop.
Drink more water Replacing your higher-calorie drinks with water is the fastest and easiest way to effortless weight loss. Also, staying hydrated will help you feel less bloated since you need water to keep things in your intestinal tract flowing. If you don’t like plain water, try this recipe:
Five Roll-Ups: Start with your back on the mat, feet forward and arms long behind you. Then slowly sit up tall. Control your roll back down until your back is fully on the mat again. This targets the entire core. 10 Ankle Reaches: Bring your legs straight up to the ceiling, feet pointed. Now crunch up and reach for your ankles. This targets the upper abs. Cassey Ho has several suggestions to help you slim down this spring. PROVIDED
Natural Belly Slimming Detox Water • 3-5 slices of fresh cucumber • ½ small lemon, sliced • ¼ of an orange, sliced • Fresh mint leaves • 24 oz. ice cold water Why does this work?
Cucumbers prevent water retention and also have many anti-inflammatory properties. The citric acid in lemon has a cleansing effect, helping to clear out the digestive system. Oranges contain flavonoids in
the peel and juice that stimulate the immune system while helping to lower cholesterol. Mint helps the body digest more easily and also soothes any stomach cramps you may be experiencing.
10 Leg Lifts: Lying on your back, place your hands behind the nape of your neck, elbows wide. Press your lower back into the mat and lift your abs up so that you’re in Pilates Stance. Now, lower both legs down as low as you can without lifting your back off the mat, then lift them back up. This targets the lower abs.
Activities: How much is not enough, too much or just right? Puppetsburg, swimming, soccer, pottery, Spanish, Music for Aardvarks — in my ’hood, the number of activity options for children seems to be expanding by the second, and whenever I talk to other moms in my neighborhood, this subject invariably becomes a topic of conversation. I sometimes come home feeling like maybe I should be doing more to keep my little buddies busy, but then I think, what’s so wrong with kids having free time to do what they want to do, not what we,

as parents, think they’ll enjoy? Last summer, we signed up my then 2-year-old for soccer on the weekends, thinking it’s such an awesome sport that my husband and I love, and we thought he would for sure share in our love of the sport. Negative. He was not a happy camper and did not enjoy it at all. There are several reasons this was a complete disaster: He may have been too young, he probably doesn’t enjoy soccer — my husband would hate to think that! — or he
just doesn’t feel like it. The weekdays are filled with stuff for my buddies to do. My toddler attends preschool on a full-time basis, and as if that isn’t enough, he has scheduled playdates and other enrichment activities. Don’t get me started on the weekends because they’re usually a blur of constant activity. So here’s my plan this summer: more downtime. Instead of having my toddler’s days packed with classes, sports and activities that allow him to “socialize” with other kids, I’m planning on letting him make the decisions on
Overscheduling your kids with sports and music lessons is an easy trap to fall into. / ISTOCK

That approach may or may not work, but rather than interfering —which I’m guilty of doing all the time — I’m going to let him make his own decisions and create activities of his own.

Winter is but a distant memory, and everything, from the tulips in the park to the clothes of the people strolling in it, is blooming with color. Perhaps in the midst of your spring cleaning, you’ve realized that your home seems to be the last thing to blossom. Where’s the color? Where’s the excitement and personality? We hit up Susan Hable, co-founder of bright, cheery textile brand Hable Construction and author of the inspiring new coffeetable book “A Colorful Home,” to find out how to add some flare into

What is the most difficult color to work with? “I have a hard time working with red. I feel like it causes people’s blood pressure to go up. It’s an active color to be engulfed in. If you’re a real risk-taker, red might be right for you. I consider myself a colorful person, but I rarely ever use red.”
Where do you start with decor? “You need your floor covering first,” says Hable. But the designer recommends taking your time finding the right pieces rather than rushing into decisions. “When we moved into my house, I barely had any furniture, and we didn’t have the budget to go out and buy a whole lot of things all at once,” she says. “I think it’s almost like collecting, and then your home winds up looking like what you’re trying to say.”

The residential revolution is well underway in Long Island City, as multiple condo and rental towers sprout where crumbling warehouses and manufacturing holdouts once stood. But while residents filling those thousands of new apartments may be enjoying luxury amenities in their buildings and neighborhood features like the new dog run at Hunter’s Point South, the surrounding area is still disappointingly desolate when it comes to stores. And while retail typically follows residential in a gentrifying area, in Long Island City, there are few signs of an accompanying retail revolution in the works. In the past 10 years,
22
roughly 9,000 new living units debuted, according to data from Long Island City–based brokerage Modern Spaces. By the end of 2017, at least 14,413 additional units will hit the market, from developers like Property Markets Group, World Wide Group and Rockrose Development. This wave is rushing into a neighborhood that until now housed a modest population, pegged at just under 21,000 in the 2010 census. The question is, where are the stores to serve the people who fill those towers? Retail “is the biggest need, and it doesn’t take a real estate expert to see that there’s so much development happening, but we’re still behind on the retail,â€? said Dana Frankel, the director of economic development, planning and BID services for the Long Island City Partnership. “There are still a lot of retailers that are like, ‘Long Island City? Where the hell is that?’â€? said Matthew Baron, president of Simon Baron Development, which has completed one Long Island City rental building and has two properties in the works. Moms need money Re: ‘NYC Mammas Give Back helps mothers in need’ (Metro.us, March 11) Unfortunately, Metro missed an opportunity to help on Mother’s Day by not going deeper in your story about NYC Mammas Give Back. The logical question is why women have to be rescued by well-meaning people when the United States is supposed to have income safety net programs that provide critical income for people while they are not in the paid workforce. Our “safety net” for mothers and others who do not earn sufficient wages is the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program, also known commonly as “welfare.” New York State and other states ask for and receive the money from the feds — then proceed to keep hundreds of millions of the grant unspent. While Ms. Eng and her daughter are scrounging around, the legislators of her state are looking around and claiming they have no one left to spend the money on. That is criminal, in
my view. No matter what state a mother lives in, the amount of her so-called welfare check is pegged at anywhere from 11 percent of the poverty line (Louisiana), to about 60 percent in New York. All of this insufficiency in our income safety net is what gives rise to more small service organizations, but we need to understand that these are not the solution to a lack of income. Mothers need money, not used baby items. Ms. Rubin is to be praised for her work, but she is wrong that there is a “gap in services.” There are many organizations who give things away, or at least say they do. What there is isn’t a gap in services but a gap in income. The current TANF program will not help a mother in need who wants to stay home with her child; instead, it will force her to accept low-wage work and will make the public pay for her day care while she does that waged work. The pay-per-view telecast more than doubled the mark for highest PPV revenue, bringing in $400 million. The Nevada State Athletic Commission announced Tuesday that the fight garnered $72,198,500 from ticket sales. Mayweather, who struck a deal to get 60 percent of the revenue, is expected to haul in around $250 million.

Rangers have history, Lundqvist on their side NHL. The Rangers and the Caps tangle in Game 7 tonight at MSG. A singular theme emanated from the visiting dressing room Sunday night: Henrik Lundqvist dragged the New York Rangers to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. “No doubt,” New York head coach Alain Vigneault said after the Rangers’ 4-3 win over the Capitals in Game 6. Lundqvist made 42 saves — 25 in the final two periods — as Washington attempted to come back from 0-2 and 1-4 deficits. “He was a difference maker.” As the longtime rivals meet in sports’ ultimate game for the third time in four years, Lundqvist is amongst the NHL playoff leaders in goaltender wins (seven), goals against average (1.68), and save percentage (.940). Lundqvist has become a significant factor in the series after recording 70 saves on 74 shots in Games 5 and 6, forcing another chapter in the rivalry when the Rangers and Capitals meet Wednesday (7:30 p.m., NBCSN) at Madison Square Garden. “We wanted a chance and we gave ourselves a

chance,” Vigneault said. Entering the fourth Game 7 between the franchises since 2009, the Rangers have won two-ofthe-three previous win-orgo-home-for-the-summer games. In the 2012 Eastern Conference semifinals, the Rangers topped the Capi-
tals, 2-1, at Madison Square Garden. The next year, the Rangers routed the Capitals, 5-0 at Verizon Center. Washington’s only Game 7 win over the Rangers occurred in the 2009 Eastern Conference quarterfinals. The Rangers have won five straight Game 7s
since that loss. “We’ve had some experience in the past,” Vigneault said. “We crawled our way back in, we’re still breathing.” DENIS GORMAN @DenisGorman sports@metro.us

NFL kickoff game will be an odd one NFL. The Patriots’ Week 1 game will be strange on several levels. We already have knowledge of what a Bill Belichick-coached Patriots team looks like without Tom Brady. With No. 12 out with a season-ending injury suffered in Week 1, Matt Cassel guided the Patriots to an 11-5 record in 2008. In Week 1 of the 2015 season, there will be an entirely different and much more bizarre scene in Foxboro. The Pats will again be relying on a backup quarterback to get the job done. But Jimmy Garoppolo, drafted 62nd overall in the 2014 NFL draft, is

already on a higher pedestal than Cassel. There are reasons to believe that “Jimmy G could, in fact, be the successor to Brady. Outside of a few yahoos last decade, Cassel was never thought of in that regard. On top of the odd scene that will be a man not named Brady taking snaps for the Patriots, there is the increasing likelihood that the team will protest Brady’s suspension in one form or another. Nothing can be ruled out now when it comes to what the Patriots will do in Week 1 to irk the NFL. On Boston’s 98.5 FM Sports Hub Tuesday, it was joked that the Patriots should wear a No. 12 patch on their jerseys in honor of Brady. Maybe the team will spray-paint a giant “12

Already in motion on social media is a campaign called, “No Brady, No Banner. Traditionally on opening night of the NFL season, the defending Super Bowl winning team has a banner-raising ceremony broadcast as part of the NFL’s kickoff celebration. that the team will treat the league’s Week 1 celebration as just another game, with zero pomp and circumstance. On the field of play, it’s obviously unknown as to what Garoppolo is as an NFL player.
