Selfie help. The app Syft, which was created in Boston, combs through social media for selfies. Now that “selfies” are so common that the word has made it to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, one Boston outfit has invented an app that combs through socials sites and helps find all those photos of ourselves. Boston-based photo filter app Syft allows users to rediscover forgotten photos and complies curated daily batches of photos that can be relived and reminisced on in a private group chat. “People these days are taking more pictures a year than their parents took in their lifetime,” Syft co-chair Eben Pingree said. “Some are meant to be relived, but the process of finding the good ones is daunting and dull. we want to take something that’s work to people and make it a habit that fosters a conversation with buddies.” The app uses a one-tap sharing platform that links through public API’s to public data available on Facebook, Instagram, Dropbox, smartphone camera rolls and cloud storage. The long-term goal is to take in all digital photos and create a sense of order for users instead of leaving them to dig through multiple mediocre pictures in digital photo albums. “We don’t save the photos,” Pingree said. We’re not a storage company, or an aggregate program. Instead, we provide links to where the images are stored.” Pingree and co-founder Max Montgelas started off making a private group chat app that centered on news content based on shared interests about a year and a half ago. When they introduced the photo-filtering feature, they saw that users gravitated towards the sifter. After talking with their users, the two started from scratch to build a platform for photo distribution and group chats. “It’s a different world today,” Pingree said. “Twenty years ago, you might take one photo in one particular setting. Today, taking 20 photos isn’t even a challenge, but finding the right one in the bunch is.” Syft launched their app six days ago on an IOS platform as a test run and will push an official launch in July.

Pingree said that as a Bostonian, hometown pride has an added enthusiasm in making a run at Silicon Valley tech companies. After spending seven years in San Francisco, Pingree decided it was time to bring his innovative energy back to Boston. “Max and I don’t buy the

talk from doubters that say you can only build a great consumer company in Silicon Valley,” Pingree said. “Boston already has some pillar consumer companies that we really admire, and we think being one of the rare consumer social plays in town will actually be a big advantage as we start to

Hometown boy. Kerry comes home to Boston after breaking leg Secretary of State John Kerry has insisted on returning to his hometown of Boston for treatment after breaking his leg in a cycling accident in France. Kerry broke his right leg in an accident while cycling a portion of the Tour de France route near Scionzier, France, on Sunday and will remain in a Geneva hospital overnight for observation, his spokesman said. Kerry, who canceled visits to Madrid and Paris, initially

wanted to get home as quickly as possible for treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital by flying home Sunday, but was kept in Geneva overnight. “After further consultation, it was sensible for him to remain in the hospital for observation overnight for purely precautionary measures and fly home tomorrow,” State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement. Instead, Kerry’s plane and traveling party departed

France ahead of Kerry, who was to take another plane outfitted to ensure his comfort as a precaution, Kirby said. Kirby added that Kerry “continues to be in great spirits and active,” and had done a range of phone calls, including with President Barack Obama. Kerry broke his femur but the injury is not life-threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery, Kirby said earlier. Kerry was taken to Geneva’s main hospital and

was in a stable condition. He had been due later on Sunday to travel to Madrid, his first visit to Spain as secretary of state, to sign a bilateral defense agreement that would allow the United States to have permanent use of Moron Air Base, near Seville. He had been scheduled on Monday to fly to Paris for a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi and members of a U.S.-supported coalition fighting the militant group Islamic State. REUTERS

Accident. Pleasure cruise ends in horror after woman suffers arm amputation on 29-foot boat A woman’s arm was severed by a motorboat propeller in a Saturday night pleasure cruise gone horribly wrong. The Coast Guard responded to a distress call from the “Naut Guilty” about 7:45 p.m. for a report of a person who fell overboard and lost an arm. Responders put a tourni-

quet on the injured arm and took the woman to Boston Fire Department’s Marine 1 and rushed her ashore to Massachusetts General Hospital. “Her arm was severed just below the shoulder,” Coast Guard Officer Lanola Stone told the Boston Herald. The operator of the 29-foot

“Naut Guilty” — who was yet to be identified — was arrested by Massachusetts Environmental Police and was charged with operating a boat under the influence of alcohol. The 19-year-old woman fell overboard near Spectacle Island. There were 13 people on board the boat at the time

of the incident. According to the Herald, the passengers, sporting bikinis and swim trunks, were questioned on the docks in Charlestown. Some left the scene sobbing. Police said that several passengers leapt overboard to help the young woman. METRO

Two state troopers became local heroes Saturday night when they helped a woman give birth on the side of the Mass Turnpike. State Troopers Paul Copponi and Daniel Mahoney, along with Framingham Fire/ EMS, came through in the clutch when they delivered a baby on I-90 east on Saturday evening. A 32-year-old Fitchburg woman called 911 from the side of the road as she went into labor about 7:53 p.m. According to a release from the state troopers office, Copponi arrived on the scene first,

where the woman was seated in the driver’s seat of a car still in drive, breathing heavily and asking for help. There were three other children in the car and Copponi had to help the woman put the car in park, said the release. Copponi calmed the woman, telling her that EMS were on their way and everything was going to be fine. At this point, the baby started crowning. Copponi cradled the child’s head as Mahoney arrived and took care of the three young passengers. The Fire/EMS arrived right on time, as the baby boy was born a few moments later. A member of the Framingham EMS cut the umbilical cord and put the mother and newborn in the ambulance. They were taken to Metro West Framingham Hospital. NATE HOMAN @METROBOS

Two men were stabbed at a Tufts University fraternity house early Sunday morning, prompting a brief shelter-inplace order as police searched for a suspect. The victims were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for stab wounds to the neck. A 20-year-old man was in serious condition and a 19-year-old suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The stabbings happened at the Delta Tau Delta house, at 98 Professors Row, and were reported 3:52 a.m. School officials used social media and

Beau Biden, son of VP, dies at 46 from cancer Loss. Tributes have poured in for the former Delaware attorney general after his death from cancer. Former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, son of Vice President Joe Biden, died on Saturday after battling brain cancer, the vice president said. He was 46. “The entire Biden family is saddened beyond words,” Vice President Biden said in a statement. “We know that Beau’s spirit will live on in all of us, especially through his brave wife, Hallie, and two remarkable children, Natalie and Hunter,” he said. Beau Biden had announced last year he planned to run for governor of Delaware in 2016. He was diagnosed with brain cancer in August 2013 and underwent surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. After getting a “clean bill of health” in November of that year, his cancer recurred in

International effort rescues over 5,000 Mediterranean migrants

The corpses of 17 migrants were brought ashore in Sicily aboard an Italian naval vessel on Sunday along with 454 survivors as efforts intensified to rescue people fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East. More than 5,000 migrants trying to reach Europe have been saved from boats in distress in the Mediterranean since Friday and operations are in progress to rescue 500 more, European Union authorities said on Sunday. Migrants who left Libya in 25 boats were picked up by ships from Italy, Britain, Malta and Belgium, assisted by planes from Iceland and Finland, the EU’s border control agency Frontex said. REUTERS

Kristen Bell’s accidental Uber pool

CULTURE

Twitter feed Today, Thandie Newton can laugh about it now, Anthony Anderson is a man on a mission and Conan O’Brien can see the future. @thandienewton: Just caught scene of me and Judy Dench in #Riddick on TV. There’s a lesson to be learned from Kristen Bell’s recent misadventure with Uber: Be careful which option you select, because Uber Pool — the furthest one to the left — means you’re sharing your ride. The “Veronica Mars” star thought she was getting a normal, iPhone-enabled lift home when things took a turn for the communal. “Didn’t know Uber had a carpool option, but my driver just pulled over and said, ‘Gotta pick someone else up.’ This should be fun,” she tweeted. But her discomfort is our entertainment, as she went on to live-tweet the incredibly awkward ride, fears for her safety and all: “Not sure where the other rider is headed but we’re getting close to my house,” she wrote. “Then it occurs to me: ‘What if he’s coming over?’”

Bruce Jenner’s Vanity Fair debut

Bruce Jenner is apparently choosing his big moments wisely. While he’s kept pretty quiet since his big Diane Sawyer interview in April, the Olympian is reportedly planning to make his first appearance as a woman for the June cover of Vanity Fair. And I mean, if you’re going to live in public, you might as well live in the really good parts of it. Honestly, an Annie Leibovitz-shot Vanity Fair cover is by far the classiest thing to happen to anyone associated with “Keeping up with the Kardashians” in a long, long time.

Natalie Portman opens up about college troubles

Harvard graduate and Oscar winner Natalie Portman returned to Cambridge this year to speak at commencement, and she used the opportunity to get candid about the difficulties she faced when she first arrived at the school. “It’s easy to romanticize my time here, but I had some difficult times. Being 19, dealing with my first heartbreak, taking birth control that’s now off the market due to its depressive side effects,” Portman revealed during her speech. And then there was the whole being in

“Star Wars” thing: “When I got to Harvard just after the release of ‘Star Wars: Episode I,’ I feared people would assume I had gotten in just for being famous, and not worthy of the intellectual rigor here,” she said, adding that she was desperate to prove she “wasn’t a dumb actress.” Look, I know she’s trying to be inspiring and all, but seriously, if beautiful, famous and intelligent Natalie Portman can’t make it through undergrad unscathed, what hope is there for us mere mortals?

So many unanswered questions.

Now that we’ve all had time to digest the series finale of “Mad Men,” are you feeling like there were some plot threads that didn’t get tied up to your satisfaction? Well, the show’s writers feel your pain, but there’s only so much you can cram into seven episodes of television. During a recent Writer’s Guild event, creator Matthew Weiner and some of the show’s staff showed off a marked-up and mangled document titled “Wish list: Things we want to deal with before the series ends.” While

several items are crossed out — either from being put into the show or being scrapped altogether — unfortunately a lot of items remain unchecked. For instance, Dr. Faye was maybe going to make an appearance, or the firm was going to have to contend with having Guns & Ammo as a client. And yeah, they did kind of leave that whole Israeli Tourism Board bit dangling. The saddest item on the list? The one that poignantly asks, “Sal — what happened to him?”

Sexism in Hollywood

Alexandra Daddario: You have to be crazy to be an actor

This film aside, are you still finding it hard to get scripts that don’t give female characters short shrift? Yeah. I read a lot of scripts and see a lot of different characters, and I think that the statistics are interesting. There are still fewer leading roles for women than there are for men, but that’s changing. And I think that it’s important that we’re having the discussion and that we’re getting more women in the directors’ chairs and as producers. I work with more and more women every film I do, and that’s very exciting.

Alexandra Daddario has a lot to be worried about in “San Andreas.” / JASIN BOLAND

Interview. The “San Andreas” star talks about the benefits of not aging. While busy promoting “San Andreas,” her new Dwayne Johnson-led disaster film, actress Alexandra Daddario casually drops in the phrase “as a 29-year-old,” causing more than a few double takes. Daddario plays Johnson’s college-age daughter in the film, and elsewhere, she says, she’s rarely asked to act her age. You’re 29. That’s kind of surprising. Do people often not believe your age? Um, yeah. I have discovered as I near my 30s that I still play young and that I still go out for younger roles. I think that’s a good thing, I guess. [Laughs] But also, I like being 29 because I’ve found that

I found a strength within myself that I didn’t have when I was younger. And I’ve matured a great deal and learned a lot. I’ve heard this before from women, that as you reach your 30s, all the bulls— and the things you were worried about in your 20s and as a teenager fade, and you find yourself. And I’m realizing that’s happening, and it’s a really wonderful thing. I think it helps me play these stronger characters, in a way.

but they don’t beat you over the head with it. There’s a lot of discussion about women’s roles in Hollywood and “strong female characters,” and I think that what it was for me was a discovery that I am strong — I don’t need to pretend to be strong. I don’t need to be anything other than I am. We are, in a way, all the same. We are strong. It’s just about [how] you don’t need to do it in a false way or in a way that feels contrived.

I was worried about turning 30, but it turned out 29 was the tough one. I’m so glad you said that because 29 has been very weird for me. But I’ve heard other people say that as well. I’ve heard it was 27 that’s supposed to be rough, but 27 wasn’t. Twenty-nine is a bit odd.

This film calls for you to play terrified for an extended period of time.

Speaking of strong characters, you’re playing a very capable, heroic young woman here,

What’s the method for that, and is it exhausting? It can be very exhausting, but it’s sort of therapeutic in a way. I’ve done a lot of films where you have to maintain a level of hysteria for long periods of time, and it can be very exhausting, but I think once you get yourself to that point, it’s easy to tap into. Your body sort of gets tricked into thinking that something is terribly wrong, and if you can get yourself to that point, then it’s easier to cry and get hysterical on a dime. But when you do get home at the end of the day, it’s a bit, “Holy s—, what the hell?”

Doing that doesn’t sound like it’s the healthiest thing in the world to do to your body. You know, you have to be crazy to be an actor, but it’s sort of fun. Meera Kaul is on a mission to get women into the male-dominated STEM fields. MOLLY CONGDON @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

The emphasis on STEM — an acronym for science, technology, engineering and math — is only growing. The skills and knowledge these fields require have become increasingly intertwined with daily life and future success. Which is why, according to Meera Kaul, more women need to enter these areas. “Everything around you is moving towards technology, science and engineering, says Kaul, a serial entrepreneur and angel investor who has incubated, financed and promoted technologyenabled ventures throughout the world. “If women do not

take a strong lead in being technical themselves, we will lose out on a lot of opportunity in the world going forward. That’s why Kaul has launched The Meera Kaul Foundation, a nonprofit that helps empower women across the globe and encourages them to enter into STEM fields. By investing in women and women-driven programs, the foundation creates opportunities to help unlock these fields of their expertise for them, achieve stability in their careers and grow both personally and professionally. We know that taking the plunge into a still very male-dominated field can be daunting for a lot of women, so we’ve asked Kaul for her advice.

STEM by the numbers • 1.2 million: number of projected job openings in STEM by 2018 • 26: percentage more that STEM workers earn compared with their non-STEM counterparts • 48: percentage of women in the workforce • 24: percentage of women in STEM-related fields U.S. Departments of Labor and Commerce

Don’t get in your own head “I don’t think there is a bigger barrier to entry than what is in our minds, Kaul says, citing many women’s

Entrepreneur and STEM activist Meera Kaul PROVIDED

insecurities about entering science and math fields. “Society has been gender stereotyping for centuries, and that has led us to believe that there are some jobs that are made for women and there are some jobs that are not made for women, she continues. “That’s highly untrue because there is nothing that will stop ourselves from being very successful at engineering fields. If they are able to overcome this barrier, I don’t think there is another barrier to overcome.

Confidence matters “The basic problem for women everywhere is economic marginalization, Kaul says. “I believe that women have to have confidence in themselves, need to be able to negotiate better and need to step forward and be equal partners in the world economy; a woman educated in STEM has a better chance of doing [all] that than a woman who is not.

She also states that Ms. Marvel should get her own movie and not be thrown in with a male group. She is getting her own movie in 2018 and that is exactly why she wasn’t in “The Avengers.” Also, the new Supergirl on TV is not blonde, she has brown hair. I could also go on about how according to her, it’s sexist for Black Widow to not have her own toy, which is not the case. She’s just not as popular, so Marvel doesn’t put out a lot of her figures because

Re: ‘Ms. Marvel should get her own TV show’ (Metro, May 28) I was just wondering if it’s too much to ask for blogger Jenna Busch to do just a little research before writing an article. She claims that the new “Assassins Creed Unity” is the first time you play as a female in the franchise. That is wrong: There are two other games that star only a female protagonist, “Assassins Creed Chronicles China”

The NHL’s ratings dream of a 2015 Stanley Cup Final between the Rangers and Blackhawks didn’t materialize as New York fell, 2-0, in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals on Friday to Tampa Bay. An Original 6 matchup could potentially have done record numbers for the league. Then again, they also dodged a major bullet since a Ducks-Lightning Final would have been — likely — the lowest rated championship series ever. Saturday’s 5-3 win by Chicago at Anaheim in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals sets up what, at least on paper, appears to be an intrigu-

ing Stanley Cup Final: Blackhawks vs. Lightning. Game 1 is Wednesday (8 p.m., NBC). Chicago will be appearing in its third Final in the last six seasons (2010, 2013) which has only been done by three teams in the past 25 years: Detroit (twice) and New Jersey. If the Blackhawks capture another Cup and improve to 3-0 in the Cup Final in this remarkable run, it will be fair to start talking about them as one of the great clubs of all-time since nobody is this consistent anymore in the pro sport that has — by far — the most parity. Meanwhile, it is not a fluke that Tampa Bay has reached its second Final in the franchise’s 23 years of existence (they won the 2004 Cup). They rallied from down 3-1 against Detroit in the first round then knocked off what were generally regarded as the top two teams in the

East - Montreal and New York in consecutive series.’ Chicago’s top players like Jonathan Toews (9 goals, 9 assists), Patrick Kane (10 goals, 10 assists) and Duncan Keith (18 points, plus-13) really don’t need an introduction. But for the casual fan, this series could be where they realize just how good Lightning captain Steven Stamkos (7 goals, 10 assists) and breakout star Tyler Johnson (12 goals, 9 assists) are. Good news comes in the fact that both of these teams play wide-open, exciting styles that emphasize offense (what a concept!). That means that Chicago goaltender Corey Crawford and Tampa Bay goaltender Ben Bishop figure to be facing a barrage of shots. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

The Red Sox (22-29) looked as though they were going to grab one of their more impressive wins of the season Sunday in Texas, but as has become routine, Boston found a way to lose. TAKE A DEFLATEGATE VACAY Playing the field

If it didn’t happen to you in late January, it probably happened to you two weeks ago. Maybe it just hit you today. Just know: “Deflategate fatigue is an epidemic ’round these parts. There are still plenty of people around here who do want to fight. They want those who make jokes at the expense of Tom Brady and the Patriots to pay and pay dearly. For instance, many Pats fans on Twitter the other night were outraged that non-Pats fans were dropping an all-too-easy line about how they needed to check the PSI levels in Tom Brady’s bicycle tires at the Best Buddies Charity Event. Pats fans, of course, jumped on those delivering the mildly amusing crack — pointing out that Brady was raising money for people with intellectual disabilities. Lighten up, guys: It’s a joke. Tom Brady is going to survive this whole thing, really. He’s gonna be OK. Mercifully, the next few weeks should be relatively Deflategate free. Brady’s suspension appeal won’t be heard until June 23, so we’ll likely get a well-deserved break from it all. Of course, if the Red Sox keep playing like poo-poo, every little bit of “new info (“GOODELL AND KRAFT HAD DINNER LAST NIGHT!!!, “BELICHICK WALKED BY BRADY AT OTAs AND DIDN’T

MATT BURKE

MATTHEW.BURKE @METRO.US

SMILE AT HIM!!! “MS. LIPPY’S CAR IS GREEN!!!) will take up two-to-three days of chatter on The Sports Hub and ’EEI. It’s tiring just thinking about it. So please. For the love of all that’s holy, go Red Sox.

The great NBA debate(s) It’s hyperbole season in the NBA. The “LeBron is better than Jordan people are vocal again. And Stephen Curry is being hailed by many (including Celtics boss Danny Ainge, who played with a

Julian Edelman and Tom Brady at the Best Buddies Challenge in Hyannis this past weekend. / GETTY IMAGES

guy named Larry Bird) as the “greatest shooter of all time. This type of stuff happens each and every year around this time. Last year, when the Spurs were in the Finals, some were making the case that Tim Duncan was a better winner than Bill Russell. Going back a few years, when the Celtics were in the Finals, some were saying

that Paul Pierce was a better scorer than Bird. It’s the classic “latest and greatest case of whatever you’ve seen most recently, is “best. But this year’s talking points are good ones, worthy of lengthy arguments. I believe, based purely on talent, LeBron James will go down as the greatest of all time.

He’s going to play another eight years or so. Eight years! That’s plenty of time to become the leader in just about every major statistical category on the books and that’s plenty of time grab a few more titles. As a pure physical specimen, LeBron would barrel over Jordan. He is a physical freak the league has not seen

since Wilt Chamberlain. And as far as Curry being the best shooter of all-time? I’m already sold. All you need to do is watch one — just one — NBA Finals game in the next two weeks from start to finish. The ease in which Curry sinks shots from 20-plus feet out has not been seen before. He’s a once-in-a-lifetime talent.
