Roslindale. The 26-year-old man, armed with a machete, was shot down by antiterrorism investigators. A 26-year-old man who had been under 24-hour surveillance by antiterrorism investigators was shot dead Tuesday morning outside of a Roslindale CVS after allegedly threatening a Boston police officer and an FBI agent with a machete. Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans said officers tried their best to get Usaama Rahim to put down the knife, but “unfortunately, Quoted

The level of alarm brought us to question him today. I don’t think anybody expected the reaction we got out of him.” CBS News reported that Rahim was being investigated because of threats he’d made against law enforcement and military in ISIS forums. Evans said Rahim refused to back down after police repeatedly asked him to put down the weapon, which was described as a large military knife. Rahim was reportedly on foot when he was stopped near the CVS parking lot on Washington Street in Roslindale at 6:59 a.m. The two were forced to fire at him after he continued toward them with the knife. He was rushed to Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. Authorities wouldn’t disclose detailed information on why the terrorism force was following him. “I can tell you that our investigation is still ongoing,” Boston FBI Special Agent in

Conley said his office was looking into whether the officer and agent were justified in using deadly force. The incident was caught on surveillance video, Conley said, though as of deadline the video had not been publicly released. The footage

shows that Rahim was the aggressor, he said. Neither suffered any physical injuries, police said. Later Tuesday, Rahim’s older brother, Ibrahim Rahim, posted a message on Facebook saying: “We are deeply grieved by the loss of my younger brother. Car rams into locksmith A car crashed into an Arlington locksmith building Tuesday, sending the driver to the hospital after he was hurt by the deploying airbag. The crash happened about 10:30 a.m. at 98 Broadway when a 2015 Audi and a 2010 Toyota crashed head-on, causing the Toyota to veer into the doorway of the locksmith shop, police said. No one inside the building was hurt. / ARLINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT

A police officer, badly wounded in a gunfight with the Boston Marathon bomber four days after the deadly attack, was likely hit by a bullet fired by a fellow officer attempting to shoot the fleeing suspect, a Massachusetts prosecutor said on Tuesday. Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority police officer Dic Donohue nearly bled to death from a wound received during a gunfight with bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in Watertown, early on April 19, 2013, four days after the bombing that killed three

people and injured 264. “It is highly likely that the gun was fired by one of the individuals attempting to stop the armed Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was fleeing,” Middlesex Country District Attorney Marian Ryan told reporters on Tuesday. “It is likely that it came from the gun of one of the officers who was trying to stop Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.” Donohue was wounded when Tsarnaev, now 21, attempted to flee the gunfight in a stolen car, inadvertently driving over his 26-year-old brother Tamerlan. I want to start by saying how truly sorry I am for all of the families, the victims, their friends and what happened.” Kadyrbayev spoke of the shame he brought to his name and his family’s name and his desire to go back and do the right thing if he could, something he has mulled over in his 26 months of solitary confinement in Essex County jail. “In my time in jail, I ask myself how I could be so stupid, and I cannot find a reason,” Kadyrbayev said. “I accept full responsibility. I look back now and cannot believe that was me.” NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

Four reasons Blatter resigned Analysis. Metro breaks down what likely caused his shock resignation from FIFA, the world governing body of soccer.

Sepp Blatter’s resignation Tuesday as the head of FIFA was stunning — especially for the fact that it came just four days after he was re-elected to a fifth term. The 79-year-old FIFA president, who had run for re-election on Friday despite the corruption scandal sweeping world

soccer, revealed his resignation in Zurich, and said a new, special election would be held soon. Metro compiled the most likely reasons behind Blatter’s resignation from the international soccer governing body.

Five things you need to know

Hundreds missing after ship capsizes on China river

Rescuers searched on Tuesday for more than 400 people, many of them elderly Chinese tourists, missing after a cruise boat was hit by a freak tornado and capsized on the Yangtze River in what may become China’s worst shipping disaster in nearly 70 years. Battling bad weather, divers and other rescue workers pulled five people they found trapped in the upturned hull

of the four-deck Eastern Star, a small fraction of the 458 people state media said were on board when the ship capsized on Monday night. Rescue operations appeared extended late into Tuesday night with paramilitary vehicles, dozens of police and soldiers as well as medical and meteorological trucks surrounding the site. Soldiers set up periodic roadblocks along a muddy path, allowing only official vehicles into the area in the central province of Hubei. REUTERS

Detainee alleges CIA sexual abuse, torture beyond Senate findings

Bill to limit domestic spy programs passes Congress

The CIA used a wider array of sexual abuse and other forms of torture than was disclosed in a Senate report last year, according to a Guantanamo Bay detainee turned government cooperating witness. Majid Khan said interrogators poured ice water on his genitals, twice videotaped him naked and repeatedly touched his “private parts” — none of which was described in the Senate report. Interrogators, some of whom smelled of alcohol, also threatened to beat him with a hammer and baseball bats, Khan said. Khan’s is the first publicly released account from a highvalue al Qaeda detainee who experienced the “enhanced interrogation techniques” of President George W. Bush’s administration. REUTERS

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday passed a bill reforming a government domestic spying program that swept up millions of Americans’ telephone records, sending the bill to the White House for President Barack Obama to sign into law. Reversing U.S. security policy that had been in place since shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the bill would end a system exposed by Edward Snowden in 2013. The eavesdropping agency collected and searched records of phone calls looking for terrorism leads but it was not allowed to listen to the content of calls. Obama used his Twitter account, after the vote to say he was glad it had passed. “I’ll sign it as soon as I get it,” the tweet said. REUTERS

Two men plead guilty to Ferguson bomb plot

Two men pleaded guilty in federal court on Tuesday to conspiring to blow up public buildings and police vehicles during protests in Ferguson, Missouri, last year, prosecutors said. Olajuwon Davis, 22, and Brandon Baldwin, 24, admitted to the explosive charges and also pleaded guilty to conspiring to buy firearms for felons, who are barred by

law from acquiring them, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of MisDAVIS souri, said in a statement. Attorneys for the two men were not immediately available for comment. Details of the plea agreement were not made available in electronic court filings. The charges carry penalties of five to 20 years in prison. Sentencing is set for Aug. 31. REUTERS

Iggy Azalea got engaged for her boyfriend’s birthday What’s the best way to celebrate your 30th birthday with your famous Australian rapper girlfriend? Proposing marriage, apparently. At least that’s what NBA star Nick Young did, asking Iggy Azalea to marry him during his big party, dropping to one knee and producing a sizeable 10-carat yellow diamond ring, according to TMZ. Oh, and the happy occasion was all caught on camera, naturally. Young and Azalea have been dating for two years — after a first date that apparently involved a trip to Target. Who knows, maybe that’s where they’ll be registered. Also, from the looks of the video, there’s a roller coaster at that birthday party. That’s dope.

Drake Bell fails at Twitter again

At this point, former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell is getting better known for Twitter dustups than … whatever show he was on, I can’t remember. Which kind of proves my point. This time, though, he’s not getting into online fisticuffs with Justin Bieber fans. Instead, he’s displaying a remarkable lack of trans sensitivity in response to Caitlyn Jenner’s big reveal — or at least he was until

he deleted his offending tweet. “Sorry … still calling you Bruce,” he tweeted this week, immediately causing a firestorm of responses. He then tried to explain himself, though that didn’t help much either: “I’m not dissing him! I just don’t want to forget his legacy! He is the greatest athlete of all time! Chill out!” There are so many things wrong with that statement, I don’t really know where to begin.

Why Goldie Hawn never married Kurt Russell

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have been happy together for 32 years but never bothered tying the knot. So what gives? Hawn is happy to tell you. “A lasting relationship isn’t about marriage. It’s about compatibility and communication. And you both need to want it to work. If one person does not want it to work, it isn’t going to work,” Hawn tells Porter magazine. “Intention is the key. It’s also about not losing yourself in each other. Being together, two pillars holding up the house and the roof, and being

different, not having to agree on everything.” Sure, but what about all the never-realized wedding presents?

Vince Vaughn has thoughts about guns You know what’s been missing from the whole gun debate thing? How the star of “Wedding Crashers” feels about it. But fret no more, because Vince Vaughn is happy to weigh in. As it turns out, Vaughn is a big fan of guns. Or at least he’s a big fan of the sound effects he’s come to associate with guns thanks to Hollywood movies. “It’s well known that the greatest defense against an intruder is the sound of a gun hammer being pulled back,” he tells the U.K. edition of GQ. “I support people having a gun in public full stop, not just in your home. We don’t have the right to bear arms

because of burglars. We have the right to bear arms to resist the supreme power of a corrupt and abusive government. It’s not about duck hunting, it’s about the ability of the individual.” What’s really astounding is that he said this to a British magazine. That must’ve been one awkward interview. Also awkward? His attempt at an analogy: “Banning guns is like banning forks in an attempt to stop making people fat,” he says. Right, but aren’t most obesity-inducing foods stuff you eat with your bare hands? I’m not sure what my point is here.

Interview. How playing Sloan prepped Emmanuelle Chriqui for the film industry’s boys club. It’s not easy being a woman in the hypermale “Entourage” world, but somehow Emmanuelle Chriqui’s Sloan has managed to come out not too terribly objectified. And, she insists, the training has been invaluable for when real-life moviemaking gets out of hand. The “Entourage” world can be pretty testosteroneheavy. How do you approach Sloan’s perspective within that? You know, you just have to approach whatever given situation with complete authenticity, which is all I can do as far as Sloan is concerned. There might be things that morally I don’t agree with or that Emmanuelle would never forgive, but we’re acting, we’re making a television show or a movie. And even in these situations where you go, “Oh my God, I can’t believe it,” Doug [Ellin] and the writers always wrote my character with a lot of integrity. So I kind of just never overthought it. She always did get better treatment than most female characters in the series. A hundred percent, and I’ll be the first to admit it. I feel like Doug was particularly protective about my character. He wanted her to stand apart from the other women that came

and went. Having said that, WIREIMAGE the other women characters — like Perrey Reeves’ character, Mrs. Ari, or Constance Zimmer’s character — they’re all strong women. They’re all superstrong women in a man’s world, and that’s one perspective of this town that’s real. TOMMASO BODDI /

I did find the extras a little distracting, since all of the women in the background were basically models. I know, right? It’s like, I don’t know where to look. They’re all gorgeous. With “Entourage,” people were always like, “Is it real?” It’s real and then it’s exaggerated for your entertainment potential. It’s, like, the glitz and the glamour but on crack. That’s what the show — and the movie — feel like. Does working on this series skew your own view of the entertainment industry? Not really. The only way that I feel it bled into my life was if I’m on other sets and it’s heavily male-dominated, I feel like I’ve had the best training to be strong, be in my body, not be intimidated by a heavy male dominance, and I’m supergrateful for that because a lot — not all, but a lot — of this business is made up of that.

But when you have the whole World Wide Web at your fingertips, narrowing your list down can be rather daunting. Home trends “There’s a swing back towards this concept of making a happy home,” says Walmsley. And it’s not just the women. “We’re seeing grooms really get involved.” Chalk it up to our fast-paced, Web-ruled lives, but Walmsley and her team have noticed that more and more people want to do things the old way. “We see so many people buying things for baking,” she says. “The woman can be a CEO, but she wants to bake. It’s a cool combination of modern-meetsnostalgic.” Another big theme Walmsley sees is a focus on entertaining. “People are getting more sets of plates,” she says. And it’s not about fine china. “They’re buying one really beautiful set which they dress up with metallic accents.” With entertaining comes cocktails. “There’s a huge emphasis for bespoke barware and tools.”

William Raveis real estate agency has partnered with Taj Boston, the iconic luxury hotel overlooking the Public Gardens on the corner of Arlington and Newbury streets, not to deal with condos or apartments, but to market its hotel suites. In what is a unique move, the Taj Boston’s grand suites are available for longterm stays: something like an extended stay hotel, but on a luxurious scale. “As a hotel, we wanted to engage word of mouth in the real estate world, says Brian Macaluso, director of sales and marketing at Taj Boston, which began working with William Raveis’ Arlington Street office a year ago. “The partnership exceeded our expectations and multiple listings were rented, so we decided to continue it, he explains. “From our perspective, it certainly is a unique situation, says Eric Rollo, the point person for the Live at Taj team at Raveis. “No one has done this in Boston before. The reaction from people at first was they didn’t understand. But once we got the idea across, it resulted in a phenomenal

first year. It was not the normal situation for the rental market, but it fulfilled a need for many people coming into the city for medical needs, or who wanted to take their time in looking for a home. Some people are waiting for work on their homes to be completed. male dominance in engineering and business in general. But beyond Kaul’s push for having women use STEM fields to ensure their career stability, I offer a completely different set of criteria. My experience in hiring and empowering female staff has been terrific because, as compared with men, women seem to be more involved in their work and self-investment to learn “beyond 5 p.m.,” are competitive but not hypercompetitive as men mostly are, and are more willing to function in a sharing and engaging manner than their male counterparts. More changes needed in Sox pitching staff MLB. Eduardo Rodriguez needs to stick in the Boston rotation and Joe Kelly and Justin Masterson should head to the ’pen. Coming into the season, it was apparent the Red Sox wouldn’t have the best starting rotation in the game, but nothing close to as bad as they have been through the first 51 games. Going into play Tuesday, Red Sox starters have an ERA of 5.05, 29th out of 30 teams, and the worst in the American League. Of the five starters that began the year in the rotation, only one has an ERA below 4.97, in Clay Buchholz at 4.33. Fortunately for the Red Sox, there is time to save their rotation and they have the pieces to do so. The first move has already taken place with Eduardo Rodriguez being called up from Triple-A Pawtucket and staying in the rotation. The left-hander, who the Red Sox acquired from the Orioles in the Andrew Miller trade, went 7 2/3 shutout innings in his major league debut against the Rangers last week to earn his first major league win.

Let’s play two The Red Sox and Twins will engage in a day-night doubleheader today at Fenway Park. •

Game 1 is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (NESN) with Eduardo Rodriguez pitching for the Sox and Phil Hughes getting the start for Minnesota.

Rick Porcello is slated to get the ball for the Sox in the nightcap (7 p.m., NESN).

The next move is to send Justin Masterson (when he’s back from the DL) and Joe Kelly to the bullpen. The Red Sox have been in need of a long reliever since the season began, and Masterson — who has bullpen experience — would be perfect for that role. Kelly, who has arguably the best stuff in the rotation, just can’t keep it all together for entire starts. He too has bullpen experience and would seemingly perform better in shorter stints as he would be able to let everything loose with the ability to hit 100 mph. This would leave a rotation of Buchholz, Rodriguez, Rick Porcello, Wade Miley and Steven Wright. There could

;/(52 @6< @V\ Q\Z[ WYV]LK [OH[ WLVWSL YLHK HKZ PU

be another potential move with Brian Johnson, who has dominated the minors in the past year, taking the place of Wright. But Wright has proven he belongs, having allowed three earned runs or less and going at least five innings in all three of his starts. Once these moves are made, the biggest key is that they have to stick. Kelly can’t be moved to the bullpen and then a few weeks later be moved back to the rotation. The key for pitching success is consistency. While some of these may not be the easiest decisions to make, the calendar has now turned to June and no longer can the phrase “It’s only April” or “It’s only May” be used. Almost a third of the season has passed and the Red Sox’s rotation hasn’t performed anywhere near expectations. With the poor play in the AL East, and how bad the Red Sox have looked this year, the division is still up for grabs. It is the worst division in baseball, which is keeping the Red Sox in the mix, but before it becomes too late the team cannot continue to roll out this same rotation. A change is needed.

Goodell rejects NFLPA request for recusal NFL commissioner Roger Goodell rejected the NFLPA’s request for Goodell to recuse himself as arbiter in Tom Brady’s suspension appeal for June 23. “I do not have any firsthand knowledge of any of the events at issue … nor did I play a role in the investigation that led to Mr. Brady’s discipline,” Goodell wrote in a letter to the NFLPA. “As I have said publicly, I very much look forward to hearing from Mr. Brady and to considering any new information or evidence that he may bring to my attention. My mind is open; there has been no ‘prejedgment’ and no bias that warrants recusal.” The NFLPA said that it wanted to call Goodell as a “witness” in the appeal hearing. Goodell cited the recent Collective Bargaining Agreement in the letter, saying that it gives him complete control as a hearing officer in any appeal. MATT BURKE

The Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers meet in this year’s NBA Finals, representing two long-suffering NBA fanbases. It’s been 40 years since the Warriors raised a championship banner. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers have yet to. It’s also the first time since the NBA’s inaugural season that two rookie coaches, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr and Cavaliers head coach David Blatt, have taken their teams to the NBA Finals. Here are some things to watch for as the series gets underway Thursday (9 p.m., ABC):

The Cavs are back in the Finals because of LeBron James. If you can get past all the complaining to referees and all the “look-at-me” moments, you see a once-in-a-generation player. James chose to return to Cleveland because he wanted to bring a championship back home, and once again he’s on the brink of doing that. But with Kyrie Irving (knee) not fully healthy, it could all fall on James to finish the job. This Warriors have no shortage of options in defending him. Whether it’s Harrison Barnes, Andre Iguodala or Draymond Green, the Warriors are going to throw everything but the kitchen sink at him in hopes of limiting his production. If you’re Golden State, you make James beat you with his jumper. The last thing they want is him driving to the

It was a scary scene when Klay Thompson began to bleed out of his ear after taking an inadvertent knee to the head last series. Thompson was diagnosed with a concussion last week, but told reporters he expects to be cleared and ready to go for Game 1. Thompson and Steph Curry make up the most dangerous backcourt in the NBA and can shoot their way back into a game in a moment’s notice. Curry (73-for167, 43.7 percent) and Thompson (45-for-106) have hit the most 3-pointers this postseason (as well as the regular season) and that’s one part of their game that no opposing team is going to be able to eliminate. There’s a good chance James covers Curry at some point, but the Warriors are so good at getting him open that James is going to be doing a lot of chasing. JAMES TOSCANO
