Gender-neutral bathrooms now in use at City Hall Neutral. Just like the White House, City Hall now has genderneutral restrooms. For most people, finding the proper public restroom to use is not an issue. The male or female symbol on the sign directs them to the correct facility. But such markings can be uncomfortable for genderqueer people when they don’t identify with the symbols posted by the doors. This will no longer be a problem at Boston’s City Hall after Mayor Marty Walsh signed an executive order establishing two single-stall gender-neutral bathrooms on the fifth floor, outside the Mayor’s office and the City Council Chambers. “Today marks a historic moment in Boston,” said Mayor Walsh. “Boston thrives on diversity, and is an inclusive city. This change will foster a safe and welcoming environment for employees and visitors, and will go a long way as we continue to work toward improving the lives of those who love and call Boston home.” The signs posted outside of these rest facilities reads “these restrooms may be used by any person regardless of gender

identity or expression.” A study conducted by The Fenway Institute of Life Skills Project found that 65 percent of transgender people in the Bay State have experienced some form of discrimination in public restroom settings in 2013. A 2011 national survey found that 70 percent of transgender people have been verbally harassed, physically assaulted or were denied access to public restrooms due to their gender identity. While championed as a bill for equality, it was met with a degree of controversy and opposition. “Having a third option for people who suffer from gender identity disorder is certainly preferable to the alternative that the bathroom bill brought on us,” Massachusetts Family Institute president Andrew Beckwith said. “Having a separate space for them protects individual privacy and safety. It seems like this is common sense, then, to have people in restrooms that are inconsistent with their biological makeup.” But the mayor said: “This shows that City Hall is a welcoming place.” NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

Investigators are on the hunt for a killer who gunned down a teenage boy who was riding his bike in Dorchester on Wednesday night. Boston police put out a public call asking for information about the shooting, which occurred just before 8 p.m. on Washington Street near Fuller Street. The boy, 16, was found in the street with gunshot wounds. He was taken to Boston Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Police said they were looking for two men, described as black, in their late teens or early 20s and wearing green hoodies who fled the Washington Street area on foot toward Mora Street. “We are combing the

area looking for witnesses and looking for the public’s cooperation,” Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans said in a statement on the department’s blog. “Everybody should be outraged when a 16-year-old on his bike gets shot.” Mayor Marty Walsh stopped by the murder scene, where a memorial had sprung up, to implore members of the community to help with the investigation. Investigators are looking into whether the shooting was gang related, according to Rachel McGuire, a Boston police spokeswoman. They declined to release the victim’s identity since he was a minor. Art debacle

More heads roll at library The chairman of trustees at the Boston Public Library was pushed into resigning Thursday at the behest of the mayor, the latest casualty from the so-called “missing” art debacle. Jeffrey B. Rudman sent an email to the trustees Thursday saying he will be resigning July 3 when library president Amy E. Ryan will also step down. Ryan made her resignation public last week, just a day before a curator at the library found two prints worth more than $600,000 — thought to be missing for more than two months — just 80 feet from where they should have been filed. Reddit, the website known for things like sharing pictures of cats and leaking nude images of celebrities, recently made an effort to curb harassment and trolling by banning several subreddits. Yesterday, a post announcing the bans and new community guidelines was published to Reddit. “We will ban subreddits that allow their communities to use the subreddit as a platform to harass individuals when moderators don’t take action. We’re banning behavior, not ideas.” “Today we are removing five subreddits that break our Reddit rules based on their

The only banned subreddit with more than 5,000 subscribers is r/fatpeoplehate.” Users have also claimed that some redditors have been “shadowbanned,” which is when a website bans a user in a way that leaves the user unaware that they’ve been banned at all (i.e., a user will see his or her own post and profile, but will be invisible to the rest of the site). According to Gawker, some users have retaliated against the bans by “taking up the cause of the banned fat-shaming community r/fatpeoplehate [and] creating backup forums for mocking fat people faster than Reddit can take them down.” MATT LEE

Rupert Murdoch, the 84-year-old media baron, will hand over the chief executive job at entertainment conglomerate TwentyFirst Century Fox Inc to his 42-year-old son James, a source familiar with the situation said on Thursday. Fox COO Chase Carey would step into an advisory role as part of the generational shift at the parent of Fox News and the movie studio behind “X-Men” and other series, the source said, adding that James Murdoch and his 43-year-old brother Lachlan would work as partners. It remained unclear what exactly that meant. Lachlan is currently non-executive co-chairman of the company’s board. The elder Murdoch, whose media

Pentagon watchdog reassigns audit chief

Christopher Lee, evil count of cinema, dies at age 93

The Defense Department inspector general is reassigning one of his top deputies just weeks after Reuters reported that the deputy had forced staff to sign off on a disputed audit of the Marines. In an email to staff, Inspector General Jon Rymer said Daniel Blair, deputy inspector general for audits, would be reassigned to the lower-ranking position of deputy chief of staff. Blair has been in charge of all audits by the Pentagon’s Office of the Inspector General, an independent watchdog agency that monitors Defense Department operations and programs.

Master of the macabre Christopher Lee, who portrayed Dracula in outrageous Hammer Films horror classics but became known to later generations for roles in “Star Wars” and as the wizard Saruman in the “Lord of the Rings,” has died aged 93. Lee died last Sunday in the hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for respiratory problems, a copy of his death certificate posted online showed. Lee’s agent, in an emailed statement, said his family “wishes to make no comment.”

By now you’ve probably seen the trailers teasing how Chris Pratt’s character in “Jurassic World,” the fourth installment in the dinosaur franchise, has been training deadly velociraptors to follow his commands. Well, it turns out that in real life the 35-year-old actor would go for something a lot smaller and less lethal as his pet dinosaur.

If you were to actually have a dinosaur of your own, which one would

One lingering question from the first movie is why would you bring back raptors in the first place? I was a collector of reptiles as a kid. I had frill-necked lizards, I had bearded dragons, I had iguanas, a savannah monitor, I had several snakes. I was big into it. All the way up until I was about 25 or something like that, I collected reptiles. And my favorite part was watching them eat. Whether they’re eating crickets or whether

they’re eating mice or rats, I loved that. It satisfied this urge inside of me, the animal inside of me. I loved watching a lizard eat a mouse. It was thrilling. So that’s why they made raptors, because we want to see giant predators eat.

Mustache acting is a very particular type of acting. How much does that alter your performance, having an impressive ’stache? So much. Truly, really so much. Just like putting on a wardrobe or holding a prop or having the boots that you’re going to run in, when I look in the mirror and I’m seeing this guy with a mustache and a deeper tan than what I normally have, I’m just seeing a different person than who I am. NEW PATIO NOW OPEN

It’s been 20-some years since the events of the first “Jurassic Park,” and despite three dino-atrocities the dream of a functioning and basically nondeadly dino-park appears to have come true. When the geneticists introduce a new superdinosaur, to boost flagging sales, it seems only a “raptor whisperer” (Chris Pratt) can save the day. The lowdown: At its most interesting, “Jurassic World” acts as a savage commentary on its own existence. The film’s best joke is not just that a park finally opened, but that it has trouble keeping the interest of an eternally bored populace, where every next-level act of oneupmanship must eventually itself be one-upped. At its most fun, “Jurassic World” even comes somewhat close to almost recreating the thrills of the Steven Spielberg originals, including the unwieldy but underrated second. The director, though, is not Spielberg but one Colin Trevorrow, of the indie time-travel rom-com

It’s Burt Macklin ... er, Chris Pratt to the rescue in “Jurassic World.” UNIVERSAL PICTURES, AMBLIN ENTERTAINMENT

“Safety Not Guaranteed” — a film you definitely saw and thought, “That guy should make a movie with dinosaurs.” For what it’s worth, Trevorrow either doesn’t embarrass himself or was handily sucked into a well-oiled machine built to do its best imitation of the series’ originals. “Jurassic World” is still an imitation — a clone, if you will, and a sometimes sloppily devised one, filled with old-school sexism (Bryce Dallas Howard plays a Type-A monster who needs to tap into her maternal instincts) and a muddled subplot about turning raptors into

weapons ... or something. But Pratt, semi-improbably, comes close to being the real deal. When he storms about saving the day or holds the camera with a steely gaze, it takes several seconds to realize this is the guy who filed years as the bumbling, dadbod goofball Andy Dwyer on “Parks and Rec.” However self-conscious “Jurassic World” is, it can’t fix its flaws, just as it can’t help but sate anyone who wants to bask in the simple, very expensive sight of one dinosaur gnawing on another. Piper Chapman has come a long way from her first days at Litchfield. While Seasons 1 and 2 of “Orange Is the New Black” saw her struggling to find her way in the strange, often scary and confusing hierarchy of the prison, Season 3 sees her finally starting to come into her own, according to Taylor Schilling. The Netflix star says Piper may finally be getting the hang of the place. We chatted with her about what’s coming up for Litchfield’s finest.

She started this journey having a solid idea of who she thought she was, and her life was pretty nailed down. I imagine it being like a house during a rainstorm, with a leaky roof. It’s like, if you put enough buckets around, you’re walking around the floor and, ostensibly, it’s a dry house. But if you really examine what’s going on, there’s a lot of cracks and there’s a lot of leaks. Prison has forced her to look at what’s happening within her. The journey is that

BODY | BRAIN WORKOUT FOR NONͲDANCERS JUNE 27 | NOON – 1:15 PM free class – give it a try!

THE STUDIO | MODERN DANCE in Middleton on the North Shore www.thestudiojuny.com

Middleton is home to the North Shore’s newest dance studio, The Studio|Modern Dance, where dancer/owner Jill Haney offers adult modern dance classes for non-dancers, beginners, and experienced dancers. “My classes are a great North Shore alternative to class in Boston or Cambridge. And I’m really excited about introducing modern dance. I meet a lot of people who don’t know what it is, and to them, I say, ‘come take class!’” Why take modern dance as an adult? “Aside from the allure of the performing arts? Two reasons: it’s good for your body and it’s good for your brain,” says Haney. “Dance training is body mechanics. It will help correct alignment problems that affect your knees or hip joints, and it strengthens your abdomen and your glutes, which eases stress on your lower back. My beginning students always tell me stories about improved strength and flexibility.” To have a healthy brain, Haney says, you have to get involved in activities that require creativity. “When we do something new, the

brain will actually rewire itself, and modern dance is perfect for this,” says Haney. “Modern dance is taught through alignment principles, so you’re not doing the same steps over and over again, but consistently challenging your body and your wits.” People who want a creative alternative to the gym can take the Body|Brain Workout for Non-Dancers or the beginning technique class. “The people who started dancing at 3 should take my intermediate/ advanced class. Why run on a treadmill when you can dance? Aspiring artists should take class. Period.” Attend Haney’s free summer event on Saturday, June 27, from noon-1:15, and take a sampler Body|Brain Workout for Non-Dancers class. Adults of all ages and levels of experience are welcome. “Bring comfortable clothing, your bare feet and a desire to have fun.” To learn more about the free event, contact Haney at (617) 800-3093 or jill@thestudiojuny.com. The adaptation of the Disney hit heads to Boston. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld

lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

Given the current craze for all things nostalgia, it’s not surprising that the Broadway adaptation of the ’90s Disney musical “Newsies” has been a huge hit. Anyone who couldn’t make it down to New York to relive one of their favorite childhood movies is in luck: The show is about to head to Boston for its first run here. Traveling with them is Jacob Kemp in the role of Davey. We chatted with the Needham native about traveling with a national tour for the first time and carrying the banner.

Discovering the Impressionists: Paul Durand-Ruel and the New Painting Through September 13

How are you liking your first tour? It’s been a remarkable experience, having the chance as a young actor getting to see so many cities and have a chance to really be a detective of character. As an actor, our job is to play these people from all across the globe who have a variety of backgrounds and histories and having the chance to see all of the places I’ve read about is a very, very important tool for me.

Where else have you guys been so far?

Oh man, I think this is my 29th city this year? We’ve been all across the country, on the East Coast, on the West Coast, to the Southwest … We just came down through Texas and now we’re heading back up the East Coast.

How would you describe Davey? Davey is the lens through which you see the story unfold. He is the newest newsie who joins the band of brothers early on in the play and he and his brother become newspaper sellers because their father has been injured at work. It’s Davey’s education and his intelligence

Absolutely. I think more than any of the other characters in the show, Davey’s worldview has been severely affected by what’s happened to his father at work, and his integrity and his sense of self really are defined by what has happened. The 11 o’clock number. It’s called But also Davey has a sense “Once And For All.” The that not only what’s hapentire company joins pening to the newsies together on stage at but what’s happening to the 11th hour to pull children all across New together and –––- aw, York is basically an isI shouldn’t give away sue that is countrywide the plot point. Does he have more responsibility weighing on him than the other boys because of his brother?

think about unions any differently?

I can’t even tell you the effect that a show has, not only on an actor but on the entire crew, when you tell a story every single night a hundred times. Not only characters that you play but the stories and the value behind the show have a lasting impact on you. The Newsboys’ Strike of 1899 was a youth-led campaign which reinforced change across the country against child labor. It’s kind of unbelievable that this strike was so successful in increasing awareness but also increasing, in a more pragmatic look at it, the amount of money these boys received for their work and raised huge, huge awareness about child labor in the United States.

ers at this pool about safety concerns posed by over 100 young people getting out of control. That was what brought Officer Eric Casebolt to the scene. As I watched the video a few minutes longer, it seemed the officer, the first on the scene, quickly went into action to quell the disturbance but he was clearly outnumbered and in quick time appeared to get overwhelmed. I could see that on the video clip and felt sorry for him because he clearly got in over his head. As a police officer for many years, there are policies and protocols about almost every-

As a retired police officer with over 27 years on the job, the news story and video on the officer at a pool disturbance down in McKinney, Texas, looked pretty bad. I also watched a TV interview with the young lady on the ground in the video, her father and the family lawyer in which none of them took any personal responsibility for what happened at the pool party. According to media sources, 911 calls were made by oth-

thing thought or imagined. With the luxury of hindsight it was clear that the officer should have waited for more cruisers to arrive. He may have in fact helped to escalate things when his anger obviously kicked into gear. The police chief was correct in saying his officer was out of control. The officer rightly was suspended and also made the right decision to resign. However, I refuse the narrative that this was just another racist cop out to get AfricanAmericans, as I heard a minister representing JusticeMatters play up in his TV interview. The parents of these so-called “kids”

need to take some responsibility. These were out-of-control teens who were scaring everyone else at that pool that day. The job of police officer is a high-risk profession. The family lawyer stated that the officer should have never pointed his gun at anyone. I watched the video, he never pointed it at anyone and he seemed quite justified in removing it for a short time from his holster for his own safety. There has been a war-on-cops mentality out there in parts of the media and among race hustlers seemingly milking agenda-driven bad news. SAL GIARRATANI, VIA EMAIL

Momentum malaise MLB. The Red Sox are having trouble finding momentum inningto-inning, let alone game-to-game. The Red Sox can’t get any momentum going by stringing together wins. In fact, they can’t even get momentum going within games. A perfect example came in Wednesday’s 5-2 loss to the Orioles with Rick Porcello on the mound. Trailing, 2-0, the Sox responded with a run in the third to make it a 2-1 game, but then Porcello allowed a run in the bottom half of the inning, so it went back to a two-run game. The Red Sox scored again in the top of the sixth, making it a 3-2 game, but once again Porcello struggled in the bottom half, this time allowing two runs, making it a 5-2 game and thus ending all hopes for a comeback. This has been a reoccurring theme for Porcello, as in his last five “shutdown” innings, he’s allowed runs in four of them. Overall for the season, in 19 “shutdown” innings, Porcello has allowed runs nine times (47.4 percent). That’s an extremely demoralizing stat for an offense. “I honestly think I need to stop making so much of a big deal about it,’’ Porcello

The slate A look at what’s on tap for the Red Sox this weekend at Fenway: •

Joe Kelly (2-4, 5.40 ERA) is scheduled to get the ball for the Sox Friday (7 p.m., NESN). Toronto will counter with Drew Hutchison (5-1, 4.91 ERA).

In Saturday’s matinee (1:35, NESN), Clay Buchholz (3-6, 4.07 ERA) is set to square off with Toronto’s R.A. Dickey (2-6, 5.35 ERA).

Eduardo Rodriguez (2-0, 0.44 ERA) will look to continue the sterling start to his MLB career Sunday (1:35 p.m., NESN). The Blue Jays will send Marco Estrada (3-3, 3.78 ERA) to the hill.

The Sox have a rare homeand-home series with Atlanta starting Monday.

told reporters after the game. “[And] just go out and continue to pitch like I have been pitching. Every time we put up a run or whatnot, you start pressing to go out and put up a zero and it ends up working against you.’’ Up until their three-game sweep of the A’s last weekend, the Red Sox hadn’t won three straight games since the first week of the season.

Not having a three-game win streak in over two months is the definition of having no momentum. Even after their best game of the season, Sunday’s come-from-behind 7-4 win, they followed it up by scoring zero runs in a 1-0 loss to Baltimore, spoiling another dominant Eduardo Rodriguez start. The blame can be directed in many different di-

rections — David Ortiz’s slow start, Mike Napoli’s issues at the plate, Pablo Sandoval’s miscues in the field and the starting rotation’s issues to open the year. It all adds up to the team’s failure to sustain any momentum. Take a look at the Blue Jays. Just over a week ago they were seven games below .500, but are in the midst of an eight-game winning streak

to now all of a sudden find themselves a game over .500 and right back in the thick of the division race. Toronto has its fair share of issues, but it has been able to work through them and keep it’s momentum going, unlike the team in Boston. RYAN HANNABLE @RyanHannable sports@metro.us

CAN’T BELIEVE IT, BUT I’M ROOTING FOR LEBRON NOW This won’t go over well here in Boston. But I’ve found myself rooting for LeBron James. It’s not like I planned on it. And to be completely honest, it’s not something I want to do, either. Look, I’m born and raised in Southie. Still here. Not leaving. And even though I spent most winters and summers inside a hockey rink as a kid, the Boston Celtics were a major part of my childhood. I don’t own any Bruins apparel, but I do have an Antoine Walker jersey — which I adore, by the way — somewhere at the bottom of my bureau. Heck, my father has a Larry Bird tattoo. So you know the Green runs deep. I was in the Garden — as a fan — when LeBron put up 45 on the C’s in Game 6 of the 2012 Eastern Conference Finals. I wasn’t rooting for him then, obviously. But now, three years later, without a horse in the race, I’m pulling for the best player on the planet to win his third NBA Championship. Again, I never expected to feel this way, going into the Finals. But the more I had to hear NBA “experts” tell me that LeBron and the Cavaliers had no chance against the Golden State Warriors without Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving, the more I wondered if they were telling us something they actually believed in, or something they wanted to see happen. These are the same people telling me that LeBron “can’t finish” after he finished

an NBA Finals overtime win on the road with a 39-point tripledouble while playing 50 of the game’s 53 minutes. Oh, OK. As I write this, the Cavs lead the series, 2-1. You have to expect Steph Curry will shoot the lights out in at least one of these upcoming games. But if he doesn’t, you’ll hear that Golden State “choked,” not “LeBron won a championship with a group that has no business playing basketball in June.” Facts are facts. And those who refuse to give LeBron credit, or those who counted

him out the moment Irving got hurt, are either Golden State Warriors fans or they’re purposely ignoring the facts. The facts are that when the Finals are over, LeBron James will have averaged 40 points per game. He may even end up averaging a triple-double per game when it’s all said and done. Not impressed yet? OK, well, Lebron will also average somewhere close to 48 minutes per game when the Larry O’Brien Trophy is handed out. For those who need to be reminded, 48 minutes is exactly how long a regulation NBA game lasts. Those who aren’t blinking an eye at those numbers continue to yell and scream Michael Jordan’s name. Instead of appreciating greatness, they keep reminding us of greats from the past. They won’t acknowledge that going to five straight NBA Finals is absolutely insane. And not just going, but leading the way. And I’ve got news for you. It’s going to be six straight, probably seven straight, and maybe even eight straight. That’s how good this guy is. Listen, if the Cavs play the Celtics in next year’s playoffs, I’ll be rocking my Walker jersey. But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be able to acknowledge insane feats when they happen. And if LeBron wins a championship this year, with this group, that’s an insane feat. And unexpectedly, it’s one that I find myself rooting for.

Stanley Cup Final

Chicago-Tampa will likely go the distance If you tuned in to the Eastern and Western Conference Finals, along with every thrilling NHL playoff series, it should come as no surprise that the Stanley Cup Final is tied at two games apiece. The series now heads back to Florida, after Brandon Saad tied things back up with a late third-period goal Wednesday

Tampa Bay hopes to recoup to its winning ways after Ben Bishop sat out Game 4 due to an undisclosed injury. The goalie is listed day-to-day but is expected to return at some point. Andrei Vasilevskiy, a 20-year-old rookie, filled in for Bishop, making 17 saves in

the loss. Continued stellar play from Brandon Saad, Jonathan Toews, Ryan Callahan and Cedric Paquette, has given full proof as to why a winner is tough to predict, with each game decided by one goal. The back-and-forth goaltending provided by Corey Crawford and the injury-battling Bishop has exemplified the fact that the series is up for grabs, taken by whichever goalie is hot that particular night.
