New bill aims to legalize charitable beer donations Suds. As the laws stand, people can’t donate beer or spirits to charitable events. What goes better together than beer and charity? You would think the two would go hand in hand, but Massachusetts’ law doesn’t seem to agree yet. As things stand, it is illegal to serve donated beer at charity events in the Bay State in any way, shape or form. The law allows for wine, but nothing else when it comes to adult beverages. That means local brewers and distillers can’t chip in their products for charitable events. A bill is headed to the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensures on Beacon Hill on Tuesday, aimed at amending the law so that booze and beer can be donated to events held for raising money for local charities. “There are a lot of good ways to raise legitimate money for good causes,” Drink Craft Beer co-founder Jeff Wharton said. “We’ve raised $30,000 for the Greater Boston Food Bank in the last few years through hosting events. But do the math: If we have to buy beer wholesale for the event, that means we can donate 20 percent less than we’d otherwise be able to. That’s $6,000 in dollars, but more importantly, that’s 18,000 meals.” Drink Craft Beer is the brainchild of two tech compa-

Food Bank and the Boys and Girls Club, they realized they had the opportunity to do far more for the community. “Most people who open a brewery are tied into their community,” Wharton said. “They want to see their businesses in their town create microeconomies. “This winter, our Beer and Chocolate for Charity with Taza raised $12,500 by bringing in local restaurants and paired beer together. In August we have a beer and ice cream event and we expect to raise about $10,000 for the Boys and Girls Club. But it could be $2,000

The Drink Craft Beer crew and Piesch agree that no one stands to lose by supporting this bill. “We work in the expensive food and beer world,” Wharton said. “There is a certain section of the population who can enjoy this, where there are more who can’t even afford enough food at all. Two US men charged with beheading plot to help Islamic State Conspiracy. Men plotted with Usaamah Rahim to attack organizer of Texas Muhammad cartoon exhibit, authorities said. Prosecutors charged two U.S. men on Friday for plotting to help the Islamic State militant group by beheading Americans, after an investigation that led law enforcement officers to shoot a suspect dead last week in Boston. The case follows a handful of so-called “lone wolf” attacks in the United States and Canada since last year by people whom authorities said were inspired by Islamic State, which controls parts of Syria and Iraq and has vowed attacks on the West. The men, Nicholas Rovinski, 24, of Rhode Island, and David Wright, 25, of Massachu-
setts, are accused of making plans with Wright’s uncle, Usaamah Abdullah Rahim, to kill the organizer of a Muhammad cartoon exhibit in Texas in May, and later to target Massachusetts police, a U.S. Department of Justice statement said. Prosecutors said that in late May, Wright, Rovinski and Rahim “conspired to commit attacks and kill persons inside the United States, which they believed would support ISIL’s objectives,” using an alternative acronym
for the group. Police shot Rahim, 26, dead last Tuesday when FBI agents and a Boston police officer approached him in a parking lot to question him. Authorities said Rahim threatened the law enforcement officers with a knife. Prosecutors said the three men initially wanted to behead New York resident Pamela Geller, who had organized the Texas event highlighting cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, images that many Muslims consider blasphemous. Two gunmen had attacked that event, and were shot dead by police. Prosecutors said Rahim later called Wright to say he had revised his plan and instead intended to attack “those boys in blue,” by which he meant Massachusetts police officers. Rovinski and Wright are charged with conspiracy to provide material support to Islamic State, an offense that carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years. REUTERS
Officers arrested the Dorchester youths, 14 and 16, on Saturday, and charged them with the murder of 16-year-old Jonathan Dos Santos. Both suspects will be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on Monday. Dos Santos was shot while
riding his bike on Washington Street near Fuller Street at about 8 p.m. last Wednesday. A 7-year-old boy, Divan Silva, was shot in the thigh not far from the scene of Dos Santos’ shooting. Silva is expected to make a full recovery. His shooting is still being investigated. NATE HOMAN

Daily Table in Dorchester aims to sate hunger for healthy, affordable food Food. Founder says America’s hunger problem isn’t an “empty stomach, it’s a healthy meal.” Low-income Dorchester families no longer have to pick through nearly rotted produce and choke down questionable meat in order to stay within their means. At least that’s the hope of Doug Rauch, who helmed renowned grocery store Trader Joe’s for more than a decade. Rauch, a Harvard graduate and Boston-area resident, is the force behind Daily Table, a nonprofit grocery store that opened on Washington Street last week. Rauch said he hopes the store will solve a two-part problem when it comes to

food security in the United States: the staggering amount of food waste and the fact that 49 million Americans struggle to eat well. “The issue in the U.S. is not an empty stomach, it’s a healthy meal. But that made my problem harder to solve,” said Rauch. “Because nutrientrich food is expensive, and lower-income families cant afford it.” According to the Greater Boston Food Bank, one in every nine members of the Boston community is at risk for hunger, and Rauch designed Daily Table for the part of the community that is in the greatest need. All of the store’s products are covered by SNAP and follow the food guidelines set by Boston Medical Center. The store also offers prepackaged, ready-to-go meals to make it easier for working families to choose healthy food options.

“A lot of people here don’t have a lot of money, but this place makes it possible to eat good, quality food,” said shopper Nate Young as he browsed the store’s aisles at its grand opening last week. “Other options for meals that are already ready around here are usually fried or unhealthy,” said store employee Jorell Benders. “And I am a person who likes to eat healthy. That was hard before, but [the store] makes it easy.” Daily Table gets its stock from a variety of donations from other supermarkets,
manufacturers and suppliers that donate their excess healthy foods to the store. “We have a blend of products that we are buying and a blend of products that get donated to us. That blend is what allows us to lower our prices,” said Rauch. “Its great because the inner city needed something like this,” said Roxbury resident Jane Mirambeaux. “This place is fabulous. It’s cheap, it’s fresh, and it’s valuable.” KEELA SWEENEY @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

FLAG FEVER
The Foreman forecast
TOM FOREMAN TOM FOREMAN PREDICTS THIS WEEK IN POLITICS. HE IS A CNN CORRESPONDENT AND AUTHOR OF THE UPCOMING BOOK “MY YEAR OF RUNNING DANGEROUSLY: A DAD, A DAUGHTER, AND A RIDICULOUS PLAN.”
Let’s face it, Flag Day does not get the respect it deserves, and this weekend was no exception. Maybe that’s because the two major parties are so busy waving their own banners. In any event, expect some hot and heavy political winds to whip the pennants of the 2016 race this week.
1. BATTLE FLAG: Hillary Clinton, wounded by wilting poll numbers, is calling for a charge after yet another announcement of her candidacy. Operatives hope her rally in dark blue New York City pays off with more voters seeing her in personal — not merely political terms since she is making her mom a centerpiece. (Yeah, it’s not exactly that easy … but I get their idea.) Meanwhile, you can count on pundits to be looking for signs of fraying in husband Bill’s interview with Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union.” The simple truth: As long as Camp Clinton is under siege over foundations, finances and emails, getting the troops in line will prove difficult. 2. CAPTURE THE FLAG: On the Republican side, Jeb Bush will finally dash from the grasslands and try to grab the flag down in

Alligator Alley. His long-awaited announcement that he is running for the Oval Office will come in his home state of Florida, which is convenient in several ways. It’s an easy drive; the location will be a tip of the hat to all those who liked him as governor there; and it will be a direct challenge to his pal, Marco Rubio, who is courting the same crowd for the GOP nomination. Love and war, kids, love and war.
3. WHITE FLAG: And the White House, while not ready to surrender, certainly will have to regroup after Congressional Democrats walloped President Obama late last week over his Pacific trade deal. If this pillar of the president’s legacy can’t be resurrected and defended, watch other politicos hoist the “Lame Duck” banner high over Pennsylvania Avenue.

Birthday. Sunday marked the 35th birthday of David Sweat, the younger of the two convicted killers. As the hunt for a pair of inmates who escaped from an upstate New York prison entered its ninth day on Sunday, new details emerged about how a female prison worker now under arrest promised to help them in a daring breakout. David Sweat, 35, and Richard Matt, 48, were discovered missing from their adjoining cells in the maximum security prison, located about 20 miles south of the Canadian border, at 5:30 a.m. on June 6. Joyce Mitchell, 51, who
worked as an industrial training supervisor at the prison’s tailor shop, was due back in court in Plattsburgh on Monday on charges of promoting prison contraband and criminal facilitation. Mitchell was accused of providing chisels and hacksaw blades to the men, who were both serving time for murder, authorities said. She smuggled the tools to them about five weeks before the escape, according to several media outlets, after an initial report in the Albany Times Union, citing unnamed investigators. Mitchell, who had agreed to drive the getaway car, had planned to meet the men at a power plant near the prison, ABC News reported Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie as saying. But she had second thoughts and never showed up, checking herself
into a hospital for a panic attack instead. She was told she would need a four-wheel drive vehicle to transport them to an undisclosed wooded area, ABC News said, citing Wylie. Wylie did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Times Union, citing an unnamed investigator, said Mitchell had agreed to drive them to a cabin in Vermont. Mitchell has pleaded not guilty to the charges. If convicted, she faces up to eight years in prison. She was transferred on Saturday to a county jail about 165 miles away from the state prison where she worked to reduce tensions in the facility. Many residents of the surrounding village either work at the prison or have family employed there. REUTERS

European space probe, thought lost, awakes in comet’s shadows
The United States plans to store heavy military equipment in the Baltics and Eastern European nations to reassure allies made uneasy by Russian intervention in Ukraine, and to deter further aggression, a senior U.S. official said. “We will pre-position significant equipment,” the official said, commenting on a New York Times report that the Pentagon was poised to store battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and other heavy weapons for as many as 5,000 troops. Poland and Lithuania both confirmed they were in talks with Washington on stationing heavy arms in warehouses in the region.
A robotic space lander has surprised scientists by waking up and sending a signal to Earth, seven months after straying into the shadows of a comet. The European Space Agency said that it had received signals from the lander, when it began “speaking” with its team on the ground for the first time since it went into emergency hibernation following a botched landing on the comet in November. Scientists believe the probe is receiving increasing amounts of sunlight as the comet speeds closer to the sun, enabling its solar panels to produce the power needed for it to send data.

Uncle Jesse got popped for DUI John Stamos certainly had a wild weekend. The “Full House” star was arrested and charged with DUI in Beverly Hills after police stopped him for erratic driving. Stamos was first taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center “due to a possible medical condition,” where he was formally arrested and given the citation. Photos from the arrest show a bleary-eyed Stamos popping a squat on the curb before police decided to head to the hospital. There’s no word on what that medical condition might be, but he’s due in court in September. Stamos tweeted out, “Thanks to everyone for their love and support. I’m home and well,” but there are so many unanswered questions here, not least of which is what, no super-handsome mug shot?

Last year, Ahmad Lane filed a federal lawsuit suggesting that a mutual colleague passed his demo for a song called “XOXO” on to Beyonce. Last week, Beyonce fired back with a response via her lawyers, calling Lane’s suit “vague and cryptic” and explaining that “the two works at issue are entirely different songs that share no lyrical or musical similarity, other than perhaps the letters ‘X’ and ‘O.’” Oh, and in case it needed pointing out, Beyonce reminded everyone she doesn’t need to steal anyone’s tracks because she has “17 Grammy awards and 118 million records sold.” So there.

Interview. The “Jurassic World” star outruns a T. rex while looking fabulous. Actors pick up all sorts of new skills when working on big movies, but one area of expertise Bryce Dallas Howard never expected to master on the job is ankle health. But when your character spends the entire movie in a set of rather nice-looking high heels, and you’re being chased by killer dinosaurs, these things become important.

Bryce Dallas masters running in heels
What are your memories from seeing the first film from 1993? I mean, everything. [Laughs] It’s one of those experiences where I was so impressionable, and it was just such a vivid experience. I left remembering every single second of it. It was just a crazy-good movie. That film is genius. So yeah, I remember everything. I was making jokes with Chris [Pratt] before we started that I needed to bring back the high-waisted khaki shorts that Laura Dern made popular with “Jurassic Park.”

Your running in heels in this was very impressive. I was obsessive with making sure that I didn’t get injured. At this point, I know so much about the fitness of ankles. [Laughs] It’s completely disproportionate with overall fitness, which is really funny because I remember, about halfway

And then a month later, he called me and said, “I’m at the top of a mountain in Hawaii; I was thinking about you. We’ve all talked about you, Bryce, and when we Skyped together, you felt like family. We’d like to invite you into the ‘Jurassic World’ family.” I mean, I said yes on the spot. But there was no script until September. He described this character to me who really goes on this journey. At first,
she’s incredibly unlikable, and by the end of the film, she’s heroic, and I just kept questioning whether that was even possible. “Isn’t this an action movie? Do you even have the screen time for that?” Nice work if you can get it, I’d say. And then! And then Chris Pratt gets cast. Could it get any better? NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

That day was funny because we had a very short period of time to shoot that — like every other day — and I remember I needed to hop on the back of the four-wheeler, and we took off through a crowd of people and went peeling down a road and did a sharp turn. At the end of it, I went to Chris, and I said, “Chris, I feel so safe. Mika lets his guard down ize now that as soon as you Interview. After a become preoccupied with worrying what people think period of sadness and protecting yourself, it’s isolation, Mika emerges about like a creative cancer.” with a powerful, intimate new album, Taking chances getting more honest On New Year’s Eve, he dethan ever. Mika may have churned out bubblegum hits like “Love Today” and “Popular Song” in the past, but his new album, “No Place in Heaven,” (out tomorrow) is melodious while exploring deeper, darker issues. Mika opens up to us about emerging from complete isolation to share the personal issues that matter the most to him.
‘I became afraid of what people think.’ It’s been three years since Mika’s last album, “The Origin of Love,” and he says for most of that time, he purposely disappeared. “I went into almost complete isolation in my daily life and in my professional choices,” he says. “I became afraid of what people would think of my work. I isolated myself, which was so stupid because I real-
cided to make a promise to himself that he would say yes to the next offer that came his way, no matter what. He got more than he bargained for when he was asked to be a judge on “The X-Factor” in Italy. But Mika followed through, learning Italian in two months. As a result of that, he landed a deal doing “The Voice” in France.
Reemerging to a more honest place “I stopped that false protection, which was just getting in the way. When you hear the album, it’s got such a devil’s wink in it, and the subjects I deal with are truly hard and very intimate, but when combined with joyful pop melodies, it resonates,” he says. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence emily.laurence@metro.us
A bold message
Daring to be brave One song on the album, “Last Party,” is about Freddie Mercury coping with his HIV-positive diagnosis by throwing a three-day rager in a nightclub. “There’s also a song called ‘Good Guys,’ which provokes a lot of questions, but I wrote it to myself,” Mika says. “I [wanted to] dare to be like all the people who inspired me when I was younger and who didn’t think about the
consequences, even if it put them in danger.” Mika recorded the bulk of the album alone in his L.A. home, which he says helped him get to a place of deep intimacy. “When you’re singing and writing a song, you’re showing more than a full nude striptease. You’re going all out and hiding nothing,” he says. “When something is intimate, and it’s very personal, it’s really powerful. People are craving intimacy.”

HOW TO GET AHEAD Girls Who Code founder Reshma Saujani wants to inspire young women to go into computer science. WANISE MARTINEZ, MWN @metronewyork letters@metro.us
Reshma Saujani has a plan: to provide computer science education to 1 million young women by 2020. The Indian-American lawyer and politician is the founder of Girls Who Code, a nonprofit devoted to giving girls the computing skills to pursue 21st-century opportunities. In an interview with Metro World News, Saujani spoke about her varied career, her passion for technology and why more women need to get into science and technology. You’re a lawyer who has
been involved in politics. So, how did you get into coding? I first became involved in coding following my campaign for Congress in New York City in 2010. During my time running for office, I came across some of the poorest and richest schools in New York City. ‌ While some schools had every imaginable gadget available, others didn’t even have access to a computer. ‌ After doing research into the gender gap in the technology field, I knew I needed to start a program to help teach girls the right skills to thrive in the 21st century — and then Girls Who Code was born. Why volunteering is good for business Giving back can also land you a promotion. Here’s how to feel good and get ahead. RAQUEL LANERI @RaquelLaneri raquel.laneri@metro.us
Studies have shown: Giving makes people happy. And it makes workplaces happier too. A study by Deloitte Consulting found that 87 percent of those who volunteered with work felt that it improved their teamwork and people skills, while 81 percent said that it helped develop stronger relationships with their colleagues. “Volunteering brings a team together,” says Carrie Morgridge, vice president of the Morgridge Family Foundation and author of “Every Gift Matters: How Your Passion Can Change the
World.” “It increases productivity and allows co-workers to bond over a common goal that’s not necessarily workrelated.” Morgridge offers these tips to finding the best charitable activities for your team.
Where to volunteer Morgridge recommends these nonprofits for giving back and strengthening team bonds.
Find what brings you joy Let’s be honest: Not all of us are equipped to wrangle a bunch of hyperactive children. “Identify your passion first,” says Morgridge. “Ask yourself what you like, where you like to give, where you have given in the past and the best gift you’ve ever given. By answering these questions, you can find what project will give you the most fulfillment.” Once you find a cause, you’ll feel much better about asking your friends, or colleagues, to join you.

Make it official Don’t be shy to go up to your boss and suggest a volunteer day. “Say, ‘I have this idea. I
did the research, and I’d love to plan an event,’” advises Morgridge. If your company already has a giving program, but it’s not where you love to volunteer, there’s nothing wrong with creating something new, Morgridge adds. “Why just have one program?”

Boston’s next champion Title talk. The Patriots and Revolution have the look of a champ, but we may have to wait on the Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins.
SPORTS
Boston hasn’t won a pro sports title in four months. In this particular century, there has been no such thing as a title drought. But where is the next title coming from? Metro ranks the teams in order of how soon they could win it all:
1
Patriots (Expect title in 2016) These are your de-
fending Super Bowl champions, and even though Tom Brady may miss the first four games of the season, and even though you currently can’t name two cornerbacks on the roster, the Patriots always find a way to contend. As long as Bill Belichick is coach and Brady is quarterback, that’s going to be the case. Not that the team needed another reason to come out guns a blazin’ to defend their crown, but they’ll be eager to prove to the naysayers that regardless of what level the PSI is in the footballs, they’re the best team in the NFL. The AFC East has been a doormat for years, and while it’s improved a bit this season, it still offers an easy path for the Patriots.
2
3
Revolution (Expect title in 2016)
Ah, the Revs. We could be talking about a club with multiple championships over the last decade, but they always come up short in the big game. The same goes for last season in yet another loss to the L.A. Galaxy. The good news: like the NBA, it appears the MLS Eastern Conference is much weaker than the Western Conference, giving the Revs an easier path to the MLS Cup. The Revs have Team USA hero Jermaine Jones along with Juan Agudelo, Andrew Farrell and Charlie Davies leading the way. But can they finally go the distance? With so much talent right now, they need to cash in sooner than later.
Stanley Cup Final
The Patriots remain Boston’s best chance at obtaining more hardware. 3. Red Sox
Well it certainly doesn’t look like 2015 is their year, does it? Sure, the Sox have shown some signs of life on occasion, but for the most part they’ve looked flat at the plate this season. Don’t expect a major overhaul like in 2012, though. Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval aren’t going anywhere, and neither are David Ortiz (next season, anyway) and Dustin Pedroia. The Sox are extremely high on Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts and Blake Swihart, too. They believe in these guys. Next year’s rotation will feature Eduardo Rodriguez from the beginning, and could also feature prospect Brian Johnson. Unlike last offseason, the Sox may go out and get an ace, too. You may be “stuck” with most of these players for a few more seasons, but there are plenty of worse players to be stuck with. On paper, this team is built to win a World Series — but as the saying goes, they don’t play on paper. Expect a title in 2016.
4
/ GETTY IMAGES
Celtics (Expect title in 2018)
This is probably the hardest team to gauge. Danny Ainge has put the team in position to rebuild quickly, but they are still plenty of pieces away. Those pieces include a cornerstone player. If the Celtics can lure in a serious
ZDENO CHARA GETTY IMAGES
Chicago could raise Cup tonight
free agent (think: LaMarcus Aldridge) or trade for one (think: DeMarcus Cousins) then we’re cooking. The C’s clearly aren’t going to land a No. 1 overall pick in these rebuilding years, so they’ll have to really nail a couple mid-round draft picks, or trade them for proven talent. Best-case scenario is they do acquire a star player and bring in a supporting cast. Even if that happens, it will take a few years. The Celtics’ 2007-08 NBA Championship was truly special, and nobody can expect the stars to align that way again. This is a hugeoffseason for the Celtics if they want to be legit championship contenders in the next few seasons, and not just a playoff team.
5
Bruins (Expect title in 2018)
It seemed like just yesterday the Bruins were the
best team in hockey. Now, having just missed the playoffs, it feels like they might get worse before they get better. Cap jail is a cruel, cruel place to be. How bad is the Bruins situation? The future of their defense, Dougie Hamilton, is a restricted free agent, and there’s a fear that the B’s might not match a contract he’s offered elsewhere. If they do, they’ll have next to nothing left to sign anybody else. Imagine that? That’s not the only problem former B’s GM Peter Chiarelli left them with. He also traded away their young star Tyler Seguin for 50 cents on the dollar. There are too many complimentary players and not enough stars — and those complimentary players make too much money. Zdeno Chara suddenly looks old, as does Dennis Seidenberg. This team has some big decisions to make over the next couple of seasons. Expect Claude Julien to be the fall guy this season. JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us
The Chicago Blackhawks are one win away from earning their third Stanley Cup title in six years as they own a 3-2 series lead over the Tampa Bay Lightning with Game 6 being played tonight (8 p.m., NBC) at the United Center. The series has been extremely close thus far as the first five games have all been decided by one goal. It’s just the second time in Cup Final history that has happened.
