Getting your fireworks fix in the city is illegal Bang, bang into the room. This Fourth of July, the state will allow some counties to buy fireworks. Light ’em up, up, up — illegally. New Yorkers go to extreme lengths to illegally buy and use fireworks during the Fourth of July holiday. Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation in November that allowed counties to sell and use a limited amount of small fireworks if they desired. New York City was not one of the 30 counties to opt in for the privilege. To get their snap, crackle and pop fix, individuals sometimes cross over to Pennsylvania, where the sale of fireworks is legal statewide, and risk smuggling them back to New York City. Jeff Bell, manager of Phantom Fireworks in Easton, Pennsylvania, found this to be true with his business. Although he couldn’t put a number on it, it was obvious to him where his customers resided. “Everyone is out of state,” Bell told Metro. “Most of our business is people coming from New York, New Jersey and the other nearby states.” In fact, Bell said that the store rarely sees Pennsylvania residents at all because

they are limited in the purchases they can make according to state law. Instead of traveling out of state, some individuals turn to the heartbeat of the modern age — the Internet. The majority of fireworks websites will not ship goods to any state where they are prohibited, but there are some who will. US Fireworks takes all orders but warned that “the responsibility for following your state law falls upon you, not us” according to a statement on its website. They get away with this by shipping via cargo trucks as opposed to us-
ing the postal system, which prohibits mailing fireworks regardless of whether the state allows them or not. The FDNY, on the other hand, doesn’t care how residents got their fireworks. Anyone possessing any kind of firework may be charged with a criminal misdemeanor, resulting in six months in jail and/or a $10,000 fine. All it takes is a call to the police upon hearing firework pops to start an investigation and arrest an individual for possession. YALDA MOSTAJERAN @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Safety first. Tight security planned for July 4 in the city
Bratton / GETTY IMAGES
The NYPD wants New Yorkers to thoroughly enjoy Independence Day with the added comfort of knowing the security for the annual display over the East River is as tight as ever. Deputy Commissioner of Counterintelligence John Miller said though there are no known credible threats for the Fourth of July, the NYPD has taken into account recent terrorist acts around the world.
“The message is, come to the fireworks, bring your families, have a great time because you’re going to have one of the most well-policed, best protected events in what is one of the safest venues in the world,” Miller said. Miller said the NYPD has the “most enhanced counterterrorism overlay” planned that includes counterterrorism officers on the ground, radiation detection, camera
monitoring and real-time follow-up on tips submitted through “If You See Something, Say Something.” The NYPD will also be monitoring social media activity, and Miller said there were social media clues ahead of the Garland, Texas, attacks last month, where a gunman killed two people at a cartoon drawing contest of the Prophet Muhammed. The July 4 holiday will
fall a little more than a week after terrorist attacks in France, Kuwait and Tunisia by individuals on behalf of ISIS. A 23-year-old New Jersey man, Alaa Saadeh, was the fifth suspect arrested in the tri-state area on terrorism charges this month. Saadeh was allegedly involved in a terror plot to detonate a pressure cooker bomb at an NYC landmark. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

Holy Cow! Prices rise for Fourth of July barbecues It’s nearly 4th of July weekend, which means ďŹ reworks, swimming and barbecue. But for lots of New Yorkers, that’s going to hurt the wallet more than usual. The second annual
Rabobank BBQ Index, a review of food prices put out by the one of the largest banks for the agribusiness and food industry, estimates that this year a barbecue for 10 people will cost $68.22. Last year the cost was $51.90. The main expense is beef, which rose 7 percent in cost in the past year. Making the switch to serving chicken could save
up to 10 percent for a barbecue host, although that could be an unpopular decision among guests. Vegetables (lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles) are the cheapest part of the meal, but are also up in cost this year, perhaps due to the drought in California. The index is calculated using Bureau of Labor Statistics. The price estimate assumes that each
guest eats “ two burgers (one chicken, one beef) with a slice of cheese, ďŹ ve handfuls of chips, a couple of beers, a can of soda, a pickle and a couple scoops of ice cream.â€? To plan your barbecue at a public park near you, check out the NYC Parks directory. Barbecuing is not allowed under trees, and coals and litter must be disposed in the trash. JULIA SHU

Crime numbers dipped to an all-time modern low in June, according to numbers released by the NYPD on Wednesday. NYPD numbers show 799 crimes were reported across the city last month, a drop of 8.5 percent, making 2015 the lowest June on record since modern crime gathering started in 1993. “It was the lowest June, not only for overall crime, but burglaries, homicides and shooting incidents,” said NYPD Deputy Commissioner Dermot Shea. The number of shootings in May dropped after an uptick in May. The NYPD said gang-related homicides are up, as are homicides of people who are on parole or probation. METRO

Indiegogo. Pommes Frites crowdfunding
Pomme Frites / GOOGLE MAPS
Pommes Frites is reopening and seeking help. The Belgian fry joint was once located in the East Village until a massive gas explosion destroyed several buildings on 2nd Avenue, including the eatery. A few months have passed and Pommes Frites is ready to reopen in the fall at its new location: 128 MacDougal Street. The small business launched an Indiegogo campaign yesterday morning to raise $64,000. The money raised will be used to cover the cost of replac-
ing their equipment. Although Pommes Frites had insurance, receiving a settlement is not a quick and easy process, and because Pommes Frites has been around for about 18 years, many of the eatery’s assets will be considered either fully or significantly depreciated, according to the campaign page. “In short, it’s likely that we’ll be getting much less than we need to reopen,” owner and campaigner Suzanne Levinson wrote. US, Cuba restoring diplomatic ties
The United States and Cuba formally agreed to restore diplomatic ties that had been severed for 54 years, fulďŹ lling a pledge made by the former Cold War enemies. President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro exchanged letters agreeing to reopen embassies in each other’s capitals, with the Cubans saying that could happen as soon as July 20. “This is a historic step forward in our eorts to normalize relations with the Cuban government
and people and begin a new chapter with our neighbors in the Americas, Obama said from the White House Rose Garden. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, speaking from Vienna, said he would visit Havana later this summer to raise the U.S. ag outside the U.S. Embassy, currently labeled as the U.S. Interests Section and under the protection of the Swiss government. Crowds count down to pot legalization in Oregon
Investigators suspect human activity, rather than lightning, sparked a grassland ďŹ re that has destroyed at least 29 homes near the eastern slopes of the Cascades in central Washington, oďŹƒcials said. The so-called Sleepy Hollow blaze, which has scorched nearly 3,000 acres since erupting Sunday on a droughtparched hillside west of the city of Wenatchee, continued to smolder as more than 300 ďŹ reďŹ ghters gained ground on the ames. As of Wednesday, crews had carved containment lines around nearly half the blaze’s perimeter.
The White House lifted a 40-year-old ban on taking photos during public tours of the executive mansion on Wednesday, delighting tourists who immediately began posting pictures on social media. First lady Michelle Obama announced the change in a video on Instagram. “If you’ve been on a White House tour, you may have seen this sign, she said, holding up a placard reading, “No photos or social media allowed. “Well, not anymore, Obama said as she tore up the sign, laughing.
Crowds counted down the minutes to midnight then lit up joints as smoking marijuana became legal in Oregon on Wednesday, and the legalization movement spread to a fourth state. Hundreds gathered on the Burnside Bridge in downtown Portland and smoked under the glow of a neon city sign, marking the moment that the law allowed recreational use. Oregon residents aged 21 and older can now smoke privately, grow up to four plants and possess up to eight ounces at home. REUTERS

Pinkett Smith breaks it down for Channing Tatum in “Magic Mike XXL.” WARNER BROS.

THE FUN STARTS HERE Jada Pinkett Smith injects some female dominance into the male stripper franchise — and totally steals the movie. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

Stepping into the scenery-chewing shoes of Matthew McConaughey is certainly a daunting task, but Jada Pinkett Smith was up to the challenge. In fact, she walks into “Magic Mike
XXL” and walks right away with the movie. Or struts away with it, to be more precise. “Nobody can replace Matthew — let’s just be real on that. I surely know I can’t, with his fine self,” Pinkett Smith says. “But I actually didn’t feel the pressure, being a woman. If a man had actually played that role, that’s a hard act to follow. But because I’m a woman, I knew right away that the audience’s minds would have to shift, because there’s just no comparison.” For the follow-up to Channing Tatum’s partially autobiographical male stripper saga, McConaughey’s Dallas has
abandoned the boys. In desperate need of a new emcee, they turn to Pinkett Smith’s Rome, who runs a private adult entertainment club catering to an exclusively female clientele. “The role was at first written for a guy,” Pinkett Smith reveals. “I was like, ‘Channing, why me?’ And his whole thing was like, ‘Jada, I really feel like in this arena there’s a sense of responsibility that we can inject in this idea.’ I just really connected to how I wanted women to feel about themselves watching this movie, and adding the energy of exaltation, celebration and inspiration.”
DON'T BE SCARRED BE CONFIDENT with
Pinkett Smith found a willing and gracious collaborator in Tatum, who also served as a producer. “With Channing, when he wanted to bring me on board, I can almost assure you there were people in the studio and people around that were like, ‘Really?’ But Channing had a vision,” she says. “He has a really high regard for the feminine, and he really felt like, through dance, he understood that this brought women joy. In the first movie, he really explored what isn’t so great about the industry itself, so in this movie he had more license to have more fun.” In discussing “Magic

It should never be demeaning, and it should never be about dominance. And so that was really what was important to bring energetically, to kind of elevate the idea of adult entertainment.”

Tatum back in a thong Channing Tatum, right, with Matt Bomer, reprises his role as a stripper in “Magic Mike XXL.” WARNER BROS. PICTURES
The “Magic Mike XXL” star is all for “equal opportunity objectification.” LUBA EGOROVA, MWN @metronewyork letters@metro.us
At the end of 2012’s “Magic Mike,” Channing Tatum’s reluctant stripper walked away from the biz. But he’s back at it in 2015’s “Magic Mike XXL,” running off with the boys for a road trip to a convention for “male entertainers.” One person not back is Matthew McConaughey, though Tatum says that did leave room for some other stars to take his place.
The first “Magic Mike” was based loosely on your past. Did any part of you wind up in the sequel? A little bit. I did go to a stripper convention twice, actually. We had a road trip, but everything along the road trip in the film we’ve fictionalized.
Did you miss McConaughey? I think we all missed him. In my opinion, he was the best part of the movie. So it was definitely a little bittersweet being there without him. But I got it. He works so hard to change people’s opinion and viewpoint of him. I
think he creatively had done everything he could with that role. He just didn’t feel like doing that again, I guess. I get that, I understand.
But you have some new actors in this film, such as Amber Heard. For me that was one of the lucky things — a happy accident or blessing in disguise. By not having such a big character like McConaughey, lots of other characters come to the front. So we have very strong female characters, Amber being one of them. My favorite part is that you have a beautiful, charismatic, talented woman in the
part, and she doesn’t have to be a romantic interest. Girls always seem to be sort of defaulted into that role. And I think that one of the most fascinating things that we did with her character was that Mike and this girl meet on the road. It had some sort of context but it’s not a sexual one.
Women in Hollywood have to conform to a certain image: young and skinny. Do you think men are getting the same pressure? I don’t know. I think there are all types. I think in reality things
Usually, it’s women who are expected to undress and look sexy on screen. Would you consider “Magic Mike XXL” a feminist film? Feminism is a very hard word. As a man it’s tough for me to say and talk about that. I would never talk about being a feminist as I’m not a woman. And I know you can be, but I’m not going to do that now. I just know that I respect them; I think that we’re doing our part for “equal opportunity objectification!”
are different and not like in movies and magazines. I know a lot of women that like burly lumberjacklooking men. You don’t have to have a six-pack to be a good-looking person, in my opinion.

‘Amy’ summons the young, personable Amy Winehouse MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

In her last years, Amy Winehouse was mostly visible as a troubled, makeupsmeared slave to drugs and drink, splattered all over tabloids and articles that blabbed, often with jokes, about how far she’d fallen. Seeing “A Poem Is a Naked Personâ€? — ďŹ nally legally releasable after 40-some years — it’s easy to see its star’s objections as being more than mere hubris. Russell, a newly minted music god, had received a shapeless, experimental nonnarrative ďŹ lm, less than half of which actually included him. Instead, Blank kept wandering away from his star’s Oklahoma homestead, shooting parties, neighboring artists, well-wishers, old couples, young couples and tractor pulls. Russell has since come

around, realizing Blank had simply made a Les Blank ďŹ lm: one in which he ďŹ lmed what made him happy or simply fascinated. (Other Blank ďŹ lms hang with Cajun revelers, Mardi Gras partiers and Werner Herzog.) There’s some great music — not just from Russell but also Willie Nelson and George Jones — but it’s more a free-form portrait of outsiders trying to enjoy life outside the prescribed American norms. There’s nothing to fence these people in, and likewise, there’s nothing to force Blank to adhere to some ready-made template. He loves to mix up his images with music and especially loves to shoot setting suns or burning suns or birds or simply the sky as songs play against it. He was trying to capture the intangible and ineable, and by making a ďŹ lm about an established commodity, he was able to portray him as being, like the ďŹ lmmaker, truly free. “Poemâ€? is a great movie to get lost in, especially on an oppressive summer day. Its good vibes go down like cool lemonade. MP

Jennifer Lawrence redoes Chris Martin breakup
ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES
This at least provides some nice symmetry for newly single Gwyneth Paltrow. Her ex-husband, Chris Martin, has reportedly called it quits — again — with girlfriend Jennifer Lawrence, according to Us Weekly. “Jen has been working nonstop, and they never saw each other,” a source explains of the couple, who previously broke up for a month or so last December. The

relationship, as they say, “ran its course.” Now, there are a number of factors at play here. First, there’s the whole postdivorce rebound thing, so Martin and Paltrow shouldn’t have expected much in the way of longevity from these pairings. Then there was Paltrow’s reported insistence that all four of them go on vacation together this summer

with their kids, a prospect that would’ve understandably sent Lawrence and Brad Falchuk running for the exits. But let’s not also forget that Lawrence is currently filming another “X-Men” movie — supposedly her last for the franchise — and every time she makes one of those, she ends up back with ex-boyfriend and co-star Nicholas Hoult. It’s tough to argue with a franchise.

FIRE UP THE PARTY
From South Street Seaport to 42nd Street, there won’t be a bad seat along the East River for Macy’s Fireworks Spectacular. We found the best parties to toast the show. RACHEL KASHDAN
Zum Schneider’s Big Bang on the East River
Crown Victoria Bar and Gardens
Penthouse808 at Ravel Hotel
SolarOne, 2420 FDR Drive, Stuy Town (Service Road East & 23rd St.) Put a twist on your all-American barbecue at Big Bang on the East River, hosted by the festive Germans at restaurant and biergarten Zum Schneider. For $99, you’ll get hot dogs and corn on the cob, plus bratwurst and endlessly flowing German beer, too. The party, which lasts from 4 to 11:30 p.m., will have DJs and traditional oompah music. It’s all right on the river, directly in front of two of the Macy’s barges, so you’ll have one of the best views in the city.
60 S. Second St., Williamsburg Once a police car repair shop (hence the name), Crown Victoria Bar and Gardens is now enjoying its retirement as a hip Williamsburg hangout with a 9,000-square-foot patio about a block from the water. They’ve got plenty of picnic tables, plus games like Ping-Pong and cornhole while you’re waiting for the fireworks to start. They'll be serving a la carte specials beginning at 2 p.m. (until 4 a.m.!) of classic American cookout fare such as ribs, sausages, beer and more, all sourced locally.
8-08 Queens Plaza South, LIC Grab a festive cocktail, snack on gourmet barbecue and dance to the DJs all night long at Ravel Hotel’s Penthouse808 rooftop bash in Long Island City. The 21+ party goes from 2 p.m. to midnight, and for just $50 you’ll get clear views of the fireworks set against Manhattan’s skyline. If you’re willing to fork over a bit more dough, for $125 you’ll also have access to the observation deck, the hotel’s highest point, just one floor up.
Freedom Fest
Brooklyn Bridge Garden Bar
Pier 15, 78 South St., FiDi Make a day of it at South Street Seaport, which is hosting free public events beginning at 1 p.m. But when it comes to the best view in Lower Manhattan, roll up to the Freedom Fest barbecue bash on Pier 15, where you'll be watching the show from right on the water. Tickets start at $109 with open bar, DJs and a buffet with Fourth of July staples like burgers and chicken wings. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., and before the fireworks you can explore the pier’s observation decks and docked ships.
12 Furman St., Brooklyn With a ticket to this hidden gem tucked among the trees of Brooklyn Bridge Park, you’ll have the best seats across the river for the lightshow. Brooklyn Bridge Garden Bar's bash seems like a splurge at $125 per person or $175 for reserved seating and a better view, but the ticket price includes three drinks (including top shelf) and a spot right by the bridge. The 21+ party goes from 6 to 10 p.m. and includes an outdoor buffet of picnic classics like corn on the cob, pulled pork sandwiches and potato salad.

More to the Fourth than fireworks We’ve got seven epic ways to have fun all through the Fourth of July weekend. On any typical weekend during summer, people are out enjoying themselves everywhere you look, from bars packed to capacity to outdoor movies and parties on rooftops. But if anything, the imperative to have fun is ratcheted up another notch on Independence Day. We found seven events beyond the fireworks to keep you busy.
Monarch Rooftop Party The weekend begins on Friday night and you’re in luck, because Spoiled NYC is hosting a rooftop party at Monarch (71 W. 35th St.), and it’s absolutely free to get in. All you have to do is RSVP at SpoiledNYC .com. Indoors is a dance floor and lounge; outside is a patio (with its own bar). This jam starts at 10 p.m., with guest DJ sets from Rodney Hazard and Franco Finelli, and we’re bumpin’ it until 4 a.m.
Funk-N’-Cue Why settle for one venue
Deep, Might Get Weird will be co-opting the backyard of soul food restaurant Sugar Hill (609 DeKalb Ave., Brooklyn) from noon to 9 p.m. on July 4 and will feature cheap drinks, blasting tunes, kiddie pools (for adults) and a barbecue for $20. Oh, and lots and lots and lots of beautiful daydrinking party people.
Revolutionary Walking Tour It’s not the Fourth of July until there’s a new hot dog-eating king.
when you can party on an island? Funk-N’-Cue is taking over Governors Island on Friday night beginning at 5 p.m. Roam the beach and relax until showtime, when George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic take the stage at Governors Club (10 South St.) To tide you over, there’ll be a barbecue spread of burgers, spicy sausage, grilled Mexican corn and more. Tickets are $20, or go VIP for $125.

gan as a “beef” between friends to prove their patriotism back in 1916 is now an event that draws 35,000 spectators — so get there early. The fun begins Saturday at 10 a.m. on Coney Island at the corner of Surf and Stillwell avenues, where you will witness what is perhaps the most notorious “athletic” event in the world.
Dassara’s Pig Roast and Nathan’s Famous Seafood Boil Hot Dog-Eating Is stuffing yourself like Contest an out-of-season turkey Because it wouldn’t be an American holiday without a little friendly competition and a lot of food, Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog-Eating Contest combines both. What be-
with delicious food a great way to celebrate America? Well, it’s definitely American. On Saturday, get to Dassara (271 Smith St., Brooklyn), which happens to be one of the most delicious ramen restaurants
in the five boroughs, for a pig roast and crab blowout from 1-6 p.m. That’s not all: There will be live music by Styles Upon Styles, and honeydew melon tea from A B Tea. A plate of pork and sides is $12, and blue crab is $15.
Might Get Weird Hosted by the Brooklyn based DJ collective The
Somewhere in the back of our sun-dappled, beersoaked brain, we should take a moment to remember that the whole point of this holiday is to celebrate our independence from Britain after the Revolutionary War. Luckily for you history buffs, Big Onion Walking Tours hosts an annual traditional tour of significant NYC landmarks significant to the war, like Alexander Hamilton’s grave and
Fraunces Tavern, where a British cannonball shot through the roof. So, if this holiday makes you want to feel connected to our nation’s history, lace up your sneakers.
Liberty Belle Extravaganza For a truly patriotic party, don your best red, white and blues and head to Hudson Terrace (621 W. 46th St.) on Saturday for a rooftop party that starts early and won’t quit until you do. More than 40 performances, from burlesque to live bands, will entertain you from 3 p.m. until well after the fireworks end. Tickets are $25-$35, though the cocktails and barbecue are a la carte. Montreal:
Now in its 33rd year, Just for Laughs has built a gigantic international reputation for bringing together the biggest and best names in comedy. Holding the record for the highest number of tickets ever sold at JFL, Dave Chappelle returns to perform no fewer than seven shows at Theatre Maisonneuve (July 20–23), while one of comedy’s biggest movie stars is, rather surprisingly, making his first appearance at the festival in “An Evening with Mike Myers.” And Kevin Hart is on course to be performing the biggest individual indoor show in the festival’s history, at the Bell Centre on July 24. Twelve gala events are to be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, Trevor Noah, Norm MacDonald, Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Sir Patrick Stewart, Ellie Kemper and Alan Cumming, and other headliners include Bill Burr, Patton Oswalt, Chris Hardwick, Jason Reitman and “Weird Al” Yankovic. Cheap laughs Not all of the shows are big-ticket items, and you’ll find names you recognize — Colin Jost of “Saturday Night Live,” Wyatt Cenac of “The Daily Show,” Ari Shaffir and many more — at surprisingly good prices in intimate venues hosting Off-JFL events. — are a big part of the festival, particularly in “The Ethnic Show” at Club Soda (July 8–19), hosted by Alonzo Bodden, with Gina Yashere, Ahmed Ahmed, Frank Spadone, Ronny Chieng, Dan Naturman and Rachid Badouri. British-Iranian actor-comedian, Omid Djalili, has his own show, “Iranalamadingdong.” There are themed shows, too, so if you think relationship issues are a hoot, check
out “Date Night” with Brent Morin, Orny Adams, Debra DiGiovanni and Tom Papa. If plain speaking has greater appeal, “The Nasty Show” has hilarious malcontents like Mike Wilmot and Gilbert Gottfried, and the oft-outrageous Jimmy Carr taking the stage to rip at various subjects in the bluntest terms. To get a peek at where Canadian humor is headed, “Homegrown Comics,” hosted by Shaun Majumder, is a contest for up-and-coming Canadian comedians. Alongside all the shows, you’ll find plenty going on for free out on the streets of Montreal, including street performers, family fun, music and art. The highlight, on July 21, is a free open-air concert by “Weird Al” Yankovic, the 2015 Grammy winner for Best Comedy Album. INSIGHT GUIDES | PENNY PHENIX

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.
Make Trump Bad move, eat his words SCOTUS Donald Trump must not have paid attention in his history classes because he would have known that miscreants came to America from every society. Some of those coming from England on the Mayflower had probably been incarcerated for treason and other offenses. Has he forgotten all the ethnic mafias that thrived in America until they became legitimate businesses? I know here in Harlem, where the Mexicans have restaurants, they are clean and polite. The next time Trump is in Harlem, he should stop by a Jimbo’s and see if what he said is true. Are you willing to eat your words? ERNESTINE MORRISON, VIA EMAIL
A divided United States Supreme Court, in an opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito, decided that Oklahoma may continue with lethal injections. (The case is Glossip v. Gross.) One can understand the motivation behind support of these executions: The petitioners committed horrible crimes. However, as a civilized society, we must seek to be better than those who have committed horrible crimes. As it stands, the risk of enormous suffering during an execution remains to be unacceptably high, and five of the Supreme Court justices chose to simply look the other way. ILYA ABLAVSKY, VIA EMAIL

Money won’t buy a ring NBA. The Knicks will likely be big money spenders in free agency, but it may not be wise. Money equals power. Money equals laziness. It’s human nature to relax a tad once you finally get security at your job or land a new, fat contract. And statistics in pro sports almost always back up the idea that an athlete will perform better when he’s hunting for that new deal than he will after he “gets paid. The NBA free-agent class of 2015 is a star-studded one. LaMarcus Aldridge, Marc Gasol and DeAndre Jordan are about to cash in. The teams that sign these big-name players should beware of a slight drop-off in performance, however. Going back into NBA history, championship teams are almost always centered around a player that a particular franchise drafted as opposed to a player that a particular franchise inked to a bloated deal. The 2015 Warriors’ big three of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green were all drafted by Golden State. The 2014 Spurs’ big three of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard were all drafted by San Antonio (Leonard was traded by In-
diana on draft night). Dirk Nowitzki, the centerpiece of the Mavericks’ run to a title in 2011, was drafted by Dallas in 1998. Kobe Bryant, the centerpiece of the Lakers’ run to titles in 2009 and 2010, was drafted by L.A. in 1996. Paul Pierce, the centerpiece to the Celtics’ run to the title in 2008, was drafted by Boston in 1998. Dwyane Wade, the centerpiece to Miami’s run to the title in 2006, was drafted by the Heat in 2003. LeBron James has obviously changed the landscape of free agency. In fact, he’s a free agent right now — though it’s highly unlikely he bolts from Cleveland for a second time. When James has reached the Finals recently, however, his sidekicks have been homegrown talents (Wade in Miami, Kyrie Irving this past season). Digging deeper into what makes a champion in today’s NBA, most of the complementary pieces on these teams came to
their franchises via trades and not free agency. Shaq joined Wade in Miami thanks to a trade. Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen were traded to Boston. Pau Gasol was traded to the Lakers. Jason Kidd and Jason Terry were traded to the Mavericks. Again, the big exception centers around James as he and Chris Bosh inked free-agent deals to join Wade in Miami. But as everyone found out during last month’s NBA Finals, James is simply on a different level than any other player in the league. He is part of a separate market. Teams across the league will back up the Brinks trucks for Aldridge, Gasol and Jordan these next few days in hopes of soon contending for a title. But if history is any indication, making it rain on the free-agent market is highly overrated. The Knicks reportedly met with free agent DeAndre Jordan Wednesday. / GETTY IMAGES

If you worked as an hourly and/or non-exempt employee at the Europan Bakery CafĂŠ restaurant located at 135 Columbus Avenue between October 15, 2007 and February 3, 2015 (the “Settlement Classâ€?) you could get money from a settlement. A settlement of a class action lawsuit (Moises Dolores, et al. v. Europan CafĂŠ, LLC) has been reached. The lawsuit claims that the restaurant did not pay nonexempt employees minimum wage, overtime premiums, and spread of hours premiums, and withheld certain gratuities from delivery workers. Europan CafĂŠ and the other Defendants deny these allegations and any liability or wrongdoing. The settlement provides $242,160.38 to be distributed to class members based on the number of workweeks they worked during the Class Period, whether they worked full or parttime, and whether they worked as a delivery employee. If you believe that you are entitled to receive settlement funds, you must contact Class Counsel, Pelton & Associates PC by phone 212-385-9700, by email at pelton@peltonlaw.com or in person at 111 Broadway, Suite 1503, New York, NY 10006, to confirm your membership in the settlement class and update your contact information. If you do not contact Class Counsel by October 12, 2015, you will not be able to obtain money from the settlement. For more information: (212) 3859700 or pelton@peltonlaw.com
