Debris cleanup scoops trash out of once-filthy harbor Environment. You only get one “I love that dirty water” reference, so enjoy it now. Boston Harbor, the site of the most famous act of revolutionary littering in American history, was once home to a raw sewage dump. Swimming in the filth-ridden harbor, bays and the nearby tributaries was an act of bravery or an invitation to illness. But as society championed more environmental awareness and the introduction of the Deer Island Waste Water Treatment Plant in 2000, the culture of the harbor changed for the better. That same year, the Boston Harbor Marine Debris Cleanup Program began combing the waters, removing more than 280 tons of floating debris since its inception. On average, crews net 10 to 12 tons of junk every summer. Neil Smith, a captain for Boston Line & Service Company for 10 years, said that garbage ends up in the harbor for a variety of reasons --- from raccoons, rats and seagulls tearing into trash bags to gusts of wind catching wrappers and toddlers tossing pacifiers. Garbage bags are the foes of the cleanup crews, with an ever-looming threat of getting tangled in a propeller and seizing an engine. Every now and again, cleanup crews will come back with car batteries and bicycles, Smith said. “When I was a kid, this harbor was wicked dirty,” Smith said as he coasted along the harbor Tuesday. “When we were

You can now, though.” From seaweed to harbor seals, marine life have flourished ever since cleaning efforts came to the forefront. Over the last 15 years, there has been a declining number of floating debris to deal with. Smith said that efforts in education and infrastructure have made a considerable difference. “You don’t really see people throwing things off of boats,” Smith said. “Most of the time it’s either accidental or from the wind. People have far more respect for the water than they did 20 years ago. People are
The Boston Harbor Association praised Mayor Marty Walsh for deciding not to dump this winter’s snow into the harbor. You remember those rancid snow piles that are still hanging around the Seaport, right? Teams would be fishing out the filth, grime and refuse once the warmer weather came around. “The mayor didn’t want that garbage in our harbors,” Boston Harbor Association President Vivien Li said. “He grew up in Dorchester and swam in the local beaches and knew that we would be picking it all back up in the summer.”

From there, the junk is separated into garbage and recyclables. The cans, bottles and papers are shipped off to Save That Stuff, Inc. to be repurposed. According to their data, about 25 percent of garbage fished out of the harbor are wrappers and other material that is easily tossed out. The Debris Cleanup teams will be out in the Harbor until September. NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

Space research. Mass. companies win $500,000 ‘Galactic Grant’ Two Cambridge companies are set to take their big ideas beyond the stratosphere after winning a $500,000 “Galactic Grant” for research in space. The companies, Nanobiosym and Zaiput Flow Technologies, were selected out of a group of Massachusetts thinkers who entered the contest. They will share the prize. When their projects are
ready, they will be sent to the International Space Station’s U.S. National Laboratory, which orbits around the planet and is the only place in the galaxy researchers can currently run experiments in zero gravity. “Congratulations to the winners of this competition, and I look forward to seeing the results of this important research,” Gov. Charlie Baker
said in a statement. Baker made the announcement Tuesday at the ISS conference, which is happening in Boston this week. The prize is a collaborative effort of the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. Nanobiosym will study bacteria growth in zero gravity, and use that research to give antibiotic development a
boost. The results of that work could benefit all of mankind, said Chairman and CEO Dr. Anita Goel. Zaiput Flow Technologies, a start-up, will run tests of a device they use to make chemicals. It’s called a “microfluidic liquid-liquid separator” and studying its use in zero-G could make it more efficient, and could revolutionize chemistry. SPENCER BUELL

MFA. Kimono selfies canceled after protest The Museum of Fine Arts Boston announced it’s changing its interactive kimonowearing exhibit following criticism from protesters, who over the past two weeks have said it appropriates, rather than appreciates, Japanese culture. The MFA released a statement about the change on their website Tuesday afternoon. The museum had been inviting patrons to wear an uchikake kimono — a formal Japanese garment — and pose for pictures in front of a painting called “La Japonaise,” by Claude Monet. Now the MFA will allow visitors to touch, but not wear, the outfit. “We apologize for offending any visitors,” the MFA said in a statement. The original spectacle did not sit well with one group of observers, who have been holding signs in a museum showroom on Wednesdays the past two weeks. “If you’re talking about the

A Florida man has been sentenced to more than 100 years behind bars for masterminding a sextortion scheme that targeted hundreds of teen girls across the United States, including four victims in Massachusetts. Now the FBI is asking the public’s help identifying additional victims of convicted online predator Lucas Michael Chansler, 31, of St. Johns, Florida. Federal investigators said Chansler earned himself a 105year stay in federal prison for engaging in an extortion plot to produce underage porn. Court testimony indicates that he targeted about 350 minors in 26 states. So far, 109 victims have
been identified. Documents show that from 2007 to Jan. 8, 2010, Chansler threatened hundreds of teenage girls with the intent of extorting the photos and webcam videos of sexually exploitative material. He would engage the girls online, pretending to be a friend, acquaintance or an admirer of the victims, investigators said. Their ages ranged from 13 to 18. Chansler told authorities that he targeted minors because adults were “too smart” to fall for his act. After gaining the victim’s trust, Chansler would convince them to expose themselves and secretly recorded the video session, the FBI said. Chansler often enticed his victims to expose themselves by showing a streaming video of a minor male exposing himself or engaging in sexually explicit behavior. If a victim did expose herself, he recorded it, and then demanded additional and more graphic images or webcam videos. He would tell the victim that if she did not comply, he would distribute the images and videos online, or send them to her family and friends. So far, authorities have identified 109 victims, but they need help finding the rest. Investigators have a list of 135 screen names from Myspace, Stickham and AIM. Using information received from the parents of one victim and working with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), agents

were able to identify Chansler and locate his home. A federal search warrant was executed at the residence on Jan. 8, 2010. Forensic analysis of Chansler’s computer media revealed hundreds of folders labeled with the name of each victim. These folders, some labeled “DONE” or “PROSPECTS,” contained personal informa-
tion specific to the victims, as well as related chat logs and videos or digital photos. Authorities are looking to get in contact with anyone who might have been victim of Chansler’s crime. NATE HOMAN @MetroBos

Haverhill City Councilor ripped off bereaved families: DA The Haverhill City Council vice president was arrested for depositing burial money in a personal account, according to the Essex County district attorney. Haverhill City Council Vice President Robert Scatamacchia was arrested after allegedly stashing away money specifically prepaid for funeral services. Scatamacchia was arraigned yesterday on two counts of larceny over $250 in Salem Superior Court. Essex First Assistant District Attorney John Dawley said that Scatamacchia
allegedly accepted pre-payments for 13 customers’ funeral services, totaling over $72,000, which he stashed in a personal bank account. In addition, Scatamacchia, 65, is said to have pocketed $200,000 that should have gone into his business, Paul C. Rogers Funeral Home. He was held on $5,000 cash bail. The Essex County grand jury in Salem Superior Court handed down a secret indictment on July 1 after an eight-month long investigation from the Essex DA’s office. Regulations state that funeral pre-payments be placed in a separate account and can only be used for burial purposes. Once Scatamacchia’s

Two killed when F-16 collides with small plane over South Carolina
A U.S. military fighter jet and a small plane collided over South Carolina on Tuesday, authorities said, killing two aboard the private plane while the military pilot ejected safely. The collision involved an F-16 fighter aircraft and a Cessna C-150, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. The agency said the crash occurred at around 11 a.m. north of Charleston. The two people aboard the Cessna were both killed, a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board said. The agency is
investigating the crash. The pilot of the military aircraft ejected safely and was taken for a health evaluation, according to a statement from Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, where the F-16 was based. “From what I understand from a witness, the military plane struck the other, small aircraft broadside,” Bill Salisbury, the Berkeley County coroner as well as the chief of the volunteer rescue squad, said at a press conference. The crash occurred over Moncks Corner, according to the NTSB. Debris from the small plane had been found scattered over a wide area, including in a rice field, local authorities said. REUTERS
US concerned over detention of 100 activists in Cuba
The State Department raised concern about the detentions of about 100 peaceful activists in Cuba this week, but said it would not slow the restoration of diplomatic relations. The State Department had seen reports about the beating and detention of political activist Antonio Rodiles in Cuba and U.S. interests there had confirmed the detentions of almost 100 activists on Sunday, spokesman John Kirby said. “Certainly, it’s concerning to us,” Kirby said. “We’re always going to be very vocal and very candid about human rights concerns wherever we see them.” REUTERS
Facebook to build new data center in Fort Worth, Texas
Facebook announced plans on Tuesday to build a new data center in Fort Worth, Texas, its fourth in the U.S. and fifth overall. Facebook will invest at least $500 million in the global data center, a spokesperson said, and will hire at least 40 full-time employees. The center will also be powered entirely by renewable energy, Tom Furlong, Facebook’s vice president of infrastructure, wrote in a blog post. As part of the deal, the 1.4 billion-user social network brought 200 megawatts of new wind energy to Texas, Furlong wrote. REUTERS

Florida State QB dismissed for punching woman in bar
The U.S. Army plans to cut 40,000 troops over the next two years, affecting all its domestic and foreign posts, USA Today reported on Tuesday, citing a plan it said was due to be announced this week. It said the plan also called for cutting up to 17,000 civilian employees.
Florida State University’s president said he fully supports head coach Jimbo Fisher’s decision to dismiss De’Andre Johnson from the football team after video surfaced showing the freshman quarterback punching a woman in a bar. Fisher took the action on Monday night after prosecutors released the June 24 surveillance video taken inside a Tallahassee nightclub. “I fully support Coach Fisher’s decisions to immediately suspend and subsequently dismiss De’Andre Johnson from the football team,” Florida State President John Thrasher said in a statement. Subway suspends pitchman Jared Fogle as authorities search his Indiana home Case. Fogle’s attorney says he is cooperating in the probe. Authorities conducted a daylong search inside the Indiana home of Subway sandwich chain pitchman Jared Fogle on Tuesday, two months after the executive director of Fogle’s foundation was arrested on federal child pornography charges. As authorities concluded their search for the day, Subway said it was suspending its relationship with Fogle due to the investigation, which the company said it believed was linked to the probe of a former foundation executive. “Jared continues to cooperate with authorities and he expects no actions to be forth-
coming,” Subway said in a statement. “Both Jared and Subway agree that this was the appropriate step to take.” By early evening on Tuesday, promotional references to Jared Fogle had been removed from Subway’s website. Authorities were observed on Tuesday removing numerous items from Fogle’s home, carrying them out in bags, boxes and briefcases. Fogle was present for part of the search, but he left his home in the Zionsville suburb northwest of Indianapolis around midday as the search continued. Authorities, who first arrived at the home about 6:30 a.m., ultimately pulled out around 5 p.m. It was not clear whether Fogle, a father of two, is a target of what authorities have said is a

Prospects of new Greek rescue rise at emergency euro zone summit Greece. People familiar with the financial system said banks could start running out of money within two days. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras won a commitment to seek a last-minute rescue at an emergency euro zone summit on Tuesday, before his country’s banks run out of money. EU leaders will hold a further summit on Sunday to approve a plan to aid Greece if creditor institutions are satisfied in the meantime with a Greek loan application and reform commitments. “The ball is in Greece’s court,” Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said. “Next Sunday the final meeting will take place on Greece. ... I am not pessimistic.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who arrived saying there was still no basis for reopening negotiations with Athens, changed her tune in the room and was actively involved in efforts to find a last-ditch solution, euro zone sources said. Merkel said she expected a formal loan request from Athens on Wednesday and more detail on how Greece would cooperate to make its economy more competitive on Thursday, in order to seek the approval of the German parliament to start negotiations. “We all share responsibility for the euro,” she said of the decision to invite all EU leaders on Sunday — a timetable she said reflected the danger of the situation and the urgent need for a solution. Short-term finance could also be made available if the Greek government came up
with satisfactory proposals and took “prior actions” in passing laws to convince creditors of its intent. Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann warned, however, that if there were no deal on Sunday, euro zone governments would have to prepare “Plan B” — code for Greece losing all access to euros and so finding itself excluded from the currency area. With Greek banks down to their last few days of cash and the European Central Bank tightening the noose on their funding, Tsipras tried to convince the euro zone’s leaders to authorize a new loan swiftly. However, euro zone sources in Brussels said ECB President Mario Draghi had assured finance ministers that the central bank would keep Greek lenders afloat this week as long as negotiations were underway. European Central Bank to keep Greek banks afloat until Sunday European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi assured euro zone leaders on Tuesday the ECB would do the necessary to keep Greek banks afloat until an EU summit on Sunday that will seek a deal on further aid to Greece, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said.
Speaking at a news conference after an emergency summit of euro zone leaders, Merkel said she was “not exaggeratedly optimistic” of a solution to rescue Greece on Sunday but the summit had been called “because we think the situation is so dangerous”. Asked if Greece could crash out of the euro zone if it failed to put forward convincing reform proposals, she said Sunday’s summit would decide whether to open
negotiations on a two-year program for Athens. The leaders had not discussed the idea of Greece possibly creating parallel currency, Merkel said. She said the euro zone stood by a 2012 commitment to look at debt relief for Greece if it fulfilled the conditions, but there could be no question of a debt haircut, which would be illegal under the EU treaty. Interview. Former child star Haley Joel Osment is taking a more comedic turn in the jazz singer/murder mystery spoof “The Spoils Before Dying.”
effort to make a film with no money and a cockeyed artistic vision, the series is hard to pin down, so we asked Osment to clear things up for us.
We were first introduced last year to the fictional oeuvre of Eric Jonrosh, a slightly delusional filmmaker (played by Will Ferrell) who’s releasing his earlier opuses to a modern audience now that the world is more accepting. The first installation was “The Spoils of Babylon,” starring Tobey Maguire and Kristen Wiig; the new one is “The Spoils Before Dying,” starring Michael Kenneth Williams as Rock Banyon, a jazz musician falsely accused of killing his lover. Returning for the second season is Haley Joel Osment (and a bunch of former “SNL” stars, including Wiig), this time playing Rock’s producer, a slightly oblivious Brit named Alistair St. Barnaby. Part spoof, part Ed Wood-esque
And what’s Alistair’s deal? Alistair is sort of single-minded in pursuit of one album he wants Rock to record, which is a big cheesy strings album that will help Rock cross over. He has a lot of artistic integrity with his hard bop albums and his free jazz and everything, and Alistair wants him to soften up his style and release an album that will be really commercially successful. And he does that no matter what’s happening with Rock. When they’re on the run from this murder charge, he’s still trying to get Rock to stop into the studio to record it.
How would you describe the genre of “Spoils Before Dying”? I have been saying epic psychedelic jazz murder mystery.
He puts up with a lot from Rock, who isn’t too interested in the strings album.

Winter in Malibu With so many funny people on set, is it hard not to break and laugh? We were pretty good. And also there’s so many moving parts in this, because they’re using really specific old-school filmmaking styles. Sometimes that means
really low-rent effects on purpose. Like, we had this scene at a snowy cabin in the woods that we were shooting on a 100-degree day in Malibu and they were blowing fake snow, which is actually like hot cotton balls, at us in this cabin. There’s so much going on that maintaining focus is really important.
Alistair knows he’s hitched his wagon to the right star, so he’s willing to put up with that sort of behavior. As I think a lot of those characters do. When you’re working with an artistic genius, you have to put up with all of their trouble. What’s it like working with so many “Saturday Night Live” stars? I think it’s just one of those things where they’re so good at what they do, they make everyone around them better. Being in a scene with Tim Meadows or Kristen Wiig —
unfortunately I didn’t have any scenes with Will or with Kate McKinnon this season — but you just learn a lot from how loose they are on set and how much fun they’re having with what they’re doing. Will Alistair ever get his strings album? People will have to tune in to find out. So, there’s really two mysteries: who committed the murder, and whether or not Alistair will get the jazz strings album he dreams of.
They’re neck and neck in terms of importance. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld

Rachel Platten on fighting her way to the top Interview. The pop star wrote her hit “Fight Song” at one of the lowest points in her life. Rachel Platten performed her hit “Fight Song” last month to a stadium crowd of 50,000
people at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia alongside Taylor Swift. “I was perched below the stage waiting to be lifted up onto it and Taylor was introducing the song, talking about how much it meant to her,” Platten tells us. “I heard the crowd, saw the lights and it just felt amazing. It was a
dream come true.”
Reaching her breaking point It wasn’t too long ago that Platten was actually contemplating giving up music altogether. The 34-year-old
singer had been pursuing a music career for several years, and while she had a few high points, her “big break” didn’t look like it was ever going to happen. “It didn’t seem like there were a lot of reasons to keep going,” she says. “Doors kept closing and it was becoming harder and harder. I started
doubting myself. I wrote ‘Fight Song’ as this declaration to not give up on myself. I was still going to believe in myself no matter what.’” The song has now been in the Billboard Top 20 for more than a month and even went to No. 1 on iTunes, ahead of, yes, Taylor Swift.
Roommates and rent money Platten first started her music career in New York City, living in Greenwich Village. “I lived with my childhood best friend and a friend of hers,” she says. “We had a blast. They would come into my room and sit on my bed while I played them music. They’d suggest lyric ideas or help me make posters. It was really fun.” But her life was far from perfect. To pay her rent, Platten worked a string of jobs, many of which she got fired from. “I worked at a fashion magazine that was very ‘Devil Wears Prada,’ I was an awful waitress, I worked as a
consultant and as an analyst,” Platten says.
Far from finished Even now, the singer doesn’t feel like she’s “made it.” “I don’t even know what that means!” she says. “I’m just so grateful that my message seems to be resonating and that people are identifying with something I believe in so firmly.” Platten’s EP is out now, and she says she is putting the finishing touches on her first full-length album. “The songs touch on a range of emotions, but all of them come from a really honest place in my heart,” she says. “There’s a song on my EP called ‘Congratulations’ that I literally wrote midfight with a friend. So a lot of my songs were written midfeeling, whether that feeling is joy, love or pain.” A new fight song? Sounds like another hit. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

Quick fixes for the renovation rookie
Love where you live Mix and match furniture for a cool, modern feel, like this living room furnished by HomeGoods. MATT HARRINGTON
HGTV’s David Bromstad says paint and pillows will spruce up your space. RACHEL KASHDAN letters@metro.us
David Bromstad, one of the hosts of HGTV’s new renovation competition series “Beach Flip” — where four amateur design teams compete for a $50,000 prize by revamping rundown beachfront properties — just loves a good home makeover. But what’s his favorite part? “The transformation — that’s the most fun,” he says. “I’m a designer at heart, and going in there and seeing a really crappy place and then starting to have a vision and seeing it come through is kind of magic.” Need a tiny bit of that transformative design magic for your own home projects? Bromstad offers four simple decor and renovation tips.
Shhh — don’t tell the landlord Between tenant rules
and labor, painting can be a hassle. So why take the plunge? “Because paint is the most inexpensive and most fabulous thing to do to really change the look of your entire space,” insists Bromstad. “It’s the most work, but it’s totally worth it.”
You can never have too many pillows To transform your home without doing a total over-
haul, consider Bromstad’s favorite trick: swapping out decorative pillows. “I am a pillow fanatic. I’m not kidding, I probably have, like, 400 pillows in storage,” confesses the designer. And unlike painting, it’s a whole lot less work. “For me it’s all about changing the accessories. That is the easiest and most fun way to change your apartment. I do it once a week,” says Bromstad. “You can go into Target and grab a ton of them to

figure out what works and then just take the others back. The great thing is that everyone has return policies.”
Add visual interest If you’re looking to drastically change the look of a room, consider adding faux ceiling beams for a rustic touch. “I love, love, love creating architecture,” says Bromstad. His favorite idea from “Beach Flip” was when one of the contestants put up beams in their space. “[Putting] beams on the ceiling costs almost nothing, and it’s so easy to do. It doesn’t have to be perfect to make great impact, and it doesn’t have to be great quality wood, either,” Bromstad says.
Stop with the ‘matchy-matchy’ While it’s important for the elements in a room to complement one another, incorporating furniture pieces that completely match each other is an outdated concept. “The whole matchymatchy thing, nuh-uh, not working for me,” says Bromstad. “Even matching the coffee table and side table in your living room — give me a break. It just makes it look like you’re in a department store.” Instead, to create a look that’s both eclectic and cohesive, the designer says to look for distinctive pieces that have an element in common, like colors that complement each other or similar fabric textures.
Beams and columns add an architectural element and are easy to do, says Bromstad. ISTOCK

The Red Sox desperately need a strong outing from Rick Porcello on Wednesday. / GETTY IMAGES
Time and time again this season the question has been asked: Are the Red Sox back in it? It’s the first full week of July and there are four games left before the All-Star break. It’s pretty much “make or break” this week. The Red Sox trailed the Yankees by six games in the AL East to start the week, but will face New York for three games this coming weekend at Fenway Park after hosting the Marlins for a short twogame series. Especially with their weekend series with the Yankees, the Sox can quickly get back into the thick of the AL East race, or they can just as easily quickly fall out of it. Prior to the start of an eight-game homestand last weekend, the Red Sox were 17-20 at Fenway Park this season. Manager John Farrell stressed that is something that needs to change. “Just the record in general needs to continue to improve,” he said. “We’ve got some momentum coming off this road trip and we need
The slate A look at the pitching matchups at Fenway in the next few days: •
Wednesday: Miami’s Tom Koehler (7-4, 3.52 ERA) vs. Boston’s Rick Porcello (4-9, 6.08 ERA)
•
Friday: New York’s Michael Pineda (8-5, 3.79 ERA) vs. Boston’s Clay Buchholz (7-6, 3.27 ERA)
•
Saturday: New York’s Ivan Nova (1-2, 2.65 ERA) vs. Boston’s Eduardo Rodriguez (4-2, 3.69 ERA)
to make Fenway a place that is our true advantage and to date that hasn’t necessarily been the case. For us to thrive off the energy that is created off the fans, we need to play to that.” The Sox took two of three from the Astros over the weekend and averaged 6.33 runs a game. They are building some momentum as they have scored five or more runs in four straight games for the first time all season. Their offense looks more like the offense many thought they would have to open the year. Hanley Ramirez is start-
ing to come around, as is Pablo Sandoval and the younger core players — Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts and Brock Holt. The one major concern is the pitching, as besides Clay Buchholz and Eduardo Rodriguez, no one in the Red Sox rotation has performed well of late. Rick Porcello and his major league-worst ERA hasn’t won a game since May 16, but he will pitch Wednesday. Justin Masterson has been moved to the bullpen. Not exactly a rotation that screams stability. Speaking of the bullpen, that area has been very inconsistent over the last week or so, partly because they’ve been overworked with the starters failing to go deep into games. The group still lacks a player that is dependable leading to Koji Uehara, besides the overused Junichi Tazawa. While the Red Sox still are far from perfect, this week is as good of an opportunity as any to get back into the playoff race. If they don’t, the talk around the team at the All-Star break will immediately focus on who should be traded. RYAN HANNABLE @RyanHannable sports@metro.us
NBA. Celtics swing deal for Golden State PF Lee When the Philadelphia 76ers landed the 2014 No. 8 overall pick, sharpshooter Nik Stauskas, from the Sacramento Kings for next to nothing last week, Celtics fans were left wondering, “why wasn’t that us?” The Kings were willing to deal immediately, eager to dish off players to clear cap space for the incoming Rajon Rondo. On Tuesday, Celtics boss Danny Ainge had the rest of the NBA world asking, “why wasn’t that us?” as he grabbed David Lee from the NBA champion Warriors in a deal that will no doubt be
considered a win for Boston at any juncture. Golden State had made it clear that it would trade Lee after the former Florida star lost playing time to Draymond Green. Gerald Wallace will be shipped to Golden State. Both Lee and Wallace are 32 years old, but Wallace is definitely considered to have more wear and tear. Wallace hasn’t averaged double-figures in points since the 2011-12 season and hasn’t played 70 games in a season since 2009-10. Lee averaged 18.2 points per game as recently as 2013-14. MATT BURKE
