NYSE, WSJ and United suffer technical glitches Bizarre. Three computer errors struck the NYSE, WSJ and United Airlines within a few hours of each other Wednesday. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), The Wall Street Journal and United Airlines all experienced technical errors Wednesday.
United halted all flights after computer systems went down. Regular service was restored about an hour later. The NYSE suspended all trading and canceled all orders after an internal technical glitch late Wednesday morning. After almost four hours, trading reopened. Around the same time the NYSE glitched, The Wall Street Journal’s website went down. It was restored an hour later. United took to Twitter to respond, saying
Tweeted
“Wonder if tomorrow is going to be bad for Wall Street. … We can only hope.” @YourAnonNews
they “experienced a network connectivity issue.” Passengers were offered flight vouchers for their two-hour flight delays. Despite the NYSE’s claim that there was no external cyber breach,
a cryptic tweet from an Anonymous-affiliated twitter account @YourAnonNews posted Tuesday night flamed speculation otherwise. Anonymous did not claim responsibility for the glitches with United Airlines, the NYSE or The Wall Street Journal. They later tweeted a clip from TV’s “The Office,” where Steve Carell’s character, Michael Scott, yells for everyone “to calm down the f— down,” presumably denying their involvement.
The NYSE has halted trading before. On 9/11, the NYSE closed and did not open again for trading until September 17. In 2012, the effects of Hurricane Sandy forced the stock exchange to close October 29 and 30. President Barack Obama was briefed on the trading suspension at the NYSE, said a White House official on Wednesday afternoon. YALDA MOSTAJERAN @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

No attacks claimed. Just coincidence or malicious plot? Each of the three companies claimed the distruptions were internal issues and not cyberattacks. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said the errors were not viewed as “the result of any nefarious actor.” Hacker group Anonymous denied their involvement on Twitter.
Attack? All three technical issues left people wondering if it truly was a coincidence.
“With all these things happening on the same day at the same time, there’s a remote possibility [hackers created the glitches],” said Menachem Brenner, research professor of finance at NYU. Brenner has worked at NYU for the past 35 years and has written over 60 scholarly articles for top finance journals like the Journal of Business.
Not likely Despite the odd timing of all three malfunctions,
Brenner did not believe it was likely that this was an organized attack. “There are days where glitches happen two, three times, but they’re not reported because they’re not big companies,” said Brenner. “Other companies glitch all the time; it’s not a big deal.” The cyber issues won’t greatly affect security or the economy surrounding any of these three companies, according to Brenner. Even the NYSE does not have to fear. “Luckily for the New
York Stock Exchange, we have alternate venues to trade. The NYSE accounts for 12 to 13 percent of the total trade volume. Even if it stops because of technical glitches it won’t affect the system as a whole much because you still have venues like NASDAQ working.”
Glitchy times Security systems continuously need monitoring and upgrades, but this event does not mean the current
systems in place are poorly designed, Brenner said. “It’s not a serious problem. [These companies] are so important that they hire the best guys to look after their systems.” Ultimately, Brenner found glitches — even three in one day — to be a simple sign of the times. “In this era where everything is steadily computerized, you expect things to happen,” said Brenner. “[Glitches] are ongoing all the time, you learn to live with them.” YALDA MOSTAJERAN

a question if a civilian was armed and dangerous. New York is the first state to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate police-involved shootings. Calls for independent reviews started last year after Eric Garner was killed in Staten Island and Michael Brown was killed in Ferguson. Grand juries in both cities declined to indict the police officers
who killed the unarmed men. Speaking at John Jay College on Wednesday, Cuomo said the past year has shown the “crisis of trust” between the minority community and criminal justice system. “Our goal is to reverse the energy ... and start to build trust again,” Cuomo said. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

City plans to cut cash bail requirements Justice system. Plan will triple number of people on community supervision ahead of trial. Riker’s Island
New York City is pledging $17.8 million to help keep low-level and nonviolent offenders awaiting trial off of Rikers Island in an effort to reduce pretrial detention and alleged offenders’ need to post cash bail. The plan allows judges to extend supervised release options to people awaiting trial, free of charge, allowing them to stay in their homes and continue to work, the city announced on Wednesday. The plan is modeled after successful pilot programs in Queens and Manhattan, and the city is seeking bids from nonprofit organizations to monitor supervised release. “There is a very real human cost to how our criminal justice system treats people while they wait for trial,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday. “Money bail is a problem because — as the system currently operates in New York — some people are being detained based on the size of their bank account, not the risk they pose. This is unacceptable. If people can be safely supervised in the community, they should be allowed to remain there regardless of their ability to pay.” About 45,500 people are detained on bail every

year, according to the city, making up 14 percent of defendants in New York City courts. The plan is expected to start next year, the Associated Press reported. Of the $17.8 million, $4 million is coming from the city and $13.8 million from Manhattan DA Cy Vance’s office from asset forfeiture funds. The move was praised by Police Commissioner Bill Bratton as a step toward equal justice. New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman praised the decision, saying “New York City is taking an important step toward making our criminal justice system more just.” The bail system has been criticized for unfairly targeting poor people; such criticism was renewed last month when 22-year-old Kalief Browder committed suicide at his parents’ Bronx home. Browder had spent three years on Rikers Island for a robbery charge, though he had not been convicted of a crime. Two of those three years were reportedly spent in solitary confinement. Corruption. Former library CEO spent funds on personal luxuries The former head of the Queens Library and library executives spent over $300,000 on extravagant dinners, concerts and alcohol, according to investigative reports released Wednesday. The investigation claims that Thomas Galante, the former president of the Queens Borough Public Library, along with board members, used library funds to buy themselves Apple TVs, airline upgrades, alcohol, rock concert tickets and passes to Disneyland. The executives did so while saying the library was running a deficit, according to New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer’s audit. “There’s no excuse for what went on here, and Tom Galante should be held accountable for every cent he improperly spent,” Stringer said. Galante allegedly squandered money from accounts viewable to the public and put the money

elsewhere. From 2008 to 2013, the Library appeared to run deficits between $5.7 million and $6.9 million. Galante used these numbers to ask the City Council for more funds,
the report said. In reality, the library had between $17 to $27 million in unrestricted funds that it could use. QBPL executives increased their own compensation by almost 7 percent while cutting library staff’s salaries by 2.8 percent. Almost $2,000 was spent on Maroon 5 concert tickets for Galante, two other QBPL executives and an unnamed fourth party. Over three years, the board spent over $45,000 on food and alcohol. Galante spent over $22,000 on furniture and a smoking deck in his office. Between July 2007 and December 2013, Galante made $670,000 in credit card charges that were allegedly not approved by the library’s chief financial officer or its board. With Galante gone and his spending brought to light, Stringer urged the IRS to further investigate. YALDA MOSTAJERAN

World Cup
Where to watch the parade To celebrate the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team’s third World Cup win, Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York City will hold a parade for the champions. It kicks off at 11 a.m. Friday at the Canyon of Heroes, on Broadway between the Battery and City Hall. Looking for the best parade watching spot? Avoid Wall Street and the Trinity Church — they’re crowded with tourists enough on regular days, let alone on parade day. A safe bet would be to stick close to the front of the parade without being at the very start. Go inside the Fulton Center to avoid the crowded street and get a view from the second floor. Also check out Zuccotti Park on Liberty Street and Broadway to get some tree shade. METRO

Flailing, flopping at audition for Brooklynettes intensive Out of her comfort zone. Luckily, everyone else was too busy to care. Surrounded by both the fittest and most diverse group of women I’d ever seen; hordes of beautiful, toned and elegant women of all different races lined up on the LIU basketball court. I leaned against a wall on the sidelines wearing a pair of leggings and a 2012 Lollapalooza T-shirt. I said, “This is going to be bad,” and in fact, this was in many ways my personal hell. I flashed back to when I was 4, wearing a purple tutu on stage: I just stood there frozen for the entire recital as girls danced around me. It was the day my family and I decided that I just wasn’t cut out to be a dancer.
Around 110 women showed up to the Brooklynette Audition Intensive on Tuesday. / LENYON WHITAKER, METRO
Why I agreed to attend a Brooklynette Audition Intensive, I will never know. The three-hour session held before the auditions is where cheerleader hopefuls can “gain an edge.” There are two sessions, each featuring a routine straight from the Barclays Center court.

The Tuesday session, where I crept toward the back, like a true go-getter, taught a hip-hop routine to none other than Lil Jon’s “Outta Your Mind.” It was like Lil Jon was telling me, “You’re outta your mind, Megan. Why are you here?” About 110 young wom-
en showed up. Some were college students, while others worked day jobs. I quickly remembered, though, that I was still leagues behind my fellow auditionees in the NBA dance moves department. I cannot even begin to explain how difficult this was. First on the docket: the warmup. I am sure for most, the warmup was a breeze. I, however, was struggling, surrounded by a pool of sweat. The first thing I quickly realized was that it wouldn’t kill me to do a situp or two every once in a while, though perhaps this warmup would actually kill me. Also, how these women kept their voluminous hair and makeup so flawless, I’ll never know. Jump ahead to the mini pre-routine. Spinning, walking, kicking and more
spinning, I attempted three out of every five moves. Luckily, these women were way too stressed to even realize that I kicked while they spun and stood while they slid on the ground. The sound of court burn echoed throughout this entire fiasco. There was a lot of flailing and confusion. I stood frozen as Brooklynette hopefuls danced around me (sound familiar?) after multiple failed attempts to get Metro’s photographer to go dance while I snapped pictures. If I were asked to do a single move from that dance, I am not sure I could. It is all a blur. I tapped out right before all the cartwheel-esque action on the ground occurred. I have no regrets. I’m not big on conspiracy theories or folkloric fantasies. I do not think the Loch Ness monster is real. I don’t believe there was a second assassin on the grassy knoll. And I have no reason to suspect Donald Rumsfeld is a replicant. The main reason for my feelings is the utter lack of evidence. And yet, just spend one late night listening to talk radio, and you will know that true believers persist — folks who are completely on board with the idea of UFOs, chupacabras and grandpa’s ghost rattling around in the attic. So my skeptical tendencies crackle when candidate Hillary Clinton hints at some old mythology about a vast right-wing conspiracy aimed squarely at her. She did it this past week when my colleague at CNN, Brianna Keilar, asked her why so many voters feel the former first lady, senator and secretary of state is untrustworthy. Without a blink, Clinton said, “People should and do trust me. Then
she added that any such perception is being created by a “barrage of attacks that are largely fomented by and coming from the right. Harrumph. To be sure, there are plenty of people on the conservative side who will do damn near anything to defeat her. They will raise money, they will spread lies (and embarrassing truths) and they will attack at every opportunity. But we have a name for that. It’s called hardball politics. No, the conspiracy she should perhaps worry about is not on the right. It is within her own camp, and it is being fed by those who think she can simply push aside real polls of real voters who have real questions. History suggests she can and must respond with real answers. Because the worst foe of almost every campaign is not a legendary beast creeping through the shadows of Pennsylvania Avenue, but the myths the candidates tell themselves rather than facing up to the truth.

Ryan Reynolds fights to stop a shady body-swapping company in “Self/less.” FOCUS FEATURES

THE FUN STARTS HERE
Ryan Reynolds on wealth and death The “Self/less” star won’t be spending money cloning himself. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
In the new sci-fi thriller “Self/less,” Ben Kingsley plays a dying wealth monster who literally changes into Ryan Reynolds, thanks to a revolutionary, possibly sketchy procedure that transfers one’s consciousness into new bodies. But it wasn’t anxiety over his own mortality that drew Reynolds to the project. “It was the idea of hubris and arrogance and the class system, and all these things that propel a person to say, ‘Oh, I cocked up the first life. Let me just buy another one.’ It’s just so vile to think like that,” Reynolds tells us. “I like seeing characters fall from
grace, and I like seeing characters accept or deal with consequences.” Reynolds dishes on friends with money and how glad he is his latest won’t get a sequel.
You play a character who doesn’t know what to do with his riches. I know a couple of people who are at that level of obscene wealth. There’s something perverse about their lives, especially when they’re young. There’s this quest for thrills that is ever-growing. I know one guy who just does some of the most insane s— you can imagine. Maybe it’s because he’s experienced so much already. He’s always owned the fastest cars, the coolest planes. After awhile, it becomes a law of diminishing returns. There’s a lack of wellbeing with these people. Not all of them — just particular ones.
Not every rich person is terrible and bored. Not at all! I know wealthy people who are truly wonderful. And people like Bill Gates — those guys are going to die and leave 20, 30 billion dollars to charity. That’s spectacular, if you ask me.
“Self/less” seems rare, not only in that it’s a characterdriven, ideas-driven sci-fi movie, but also that it’s a oneoff, not a franchise movie. I can’t imagine there being a “Self/less 2.” Oh God, no! But that’s great, isn’t it? It’s refreshing that there are some films like that still. It’s scary, because everything’s a franchise now. It does kill off the one-off movies — the small films by Screen
Gems or Focus Features. It’s getting harder and harder to finance those movies. I’m worried for the future, in the sense that one day, 12 months a year — it’s just going to be franchise films. Even at awards season, it will be franchise movies that will collect all the gold. It’s a rare breed these days to have a one-off.
You still occasionally get to do something small, like your forthcoming gambling drama “Mississippi Grind.” I always try to do those. I love those. “Buried” was one of those. “The Voices” was one of those — the smaller ones that sometimes just play festival circuits. But to me, they’re everything. I love, love doing them.

“Minions” is part of a new, odd, mostly welcome trend: loopy spinoffs of franchises that are already plenty loopy. Not as strange or funny as “Penguins of Madagascar,” the “Despicable Me” offshoot mostly offers that film’s vast army of baby babbling yellow whatzits. That’s fine. If all it was was 90 minutes of Minions reading the phone book, all would be well, especially since they’d do it in a made-up language that’s far cooler than Jodie Foster’s in “Nell” though not nearly as cool as Milla
Jovovich’s in “The Fifth Element.” “Minions” does slightly more than that, though with a stress “slightly.” The plot functions as a prequel as well as a simple misadventure. It shows three randomly chosen Minions — all voiced by co-director Pierre Coffin, who truly deserves a special Oscar — hobnobbing with a less trustworthy supervillain: a tricked-out lady baddie named Scarlett Overkill (a game Sandra Bullock). The action takes place in England (for some reason) in the ’60s (for some reason), and at one point there’s an attempt to steal the crown, which then segues into a brief remake of
“King Ralph,” only starring Minions — again, for some reason. What follows is zany but never particularly inspired. What it does have — and this truly can’t be emphasized enough — is Minions. Usually there are only three of them, but that’s enough, as it periodically checks in on the rest of them, babbling and bumbling as they circumnavigate the globe. They could be doing anything and it would be entertaining, and sometimes in “Minions” the bar is really set that low. May the deserved sequel step up its game, though if it doesn’t that will be OK, too.

The early ’90s saw progressiveminded indie filmmakers using limited resources to flood the market with movies earnestly, sincerely, preachily speaking truth to LGBT power. What they sometimes lacked in artistry and subtlety they made up for in how they chipped away at intolerance. “Tangerine” recalls that era: It was shot with an iPhone 5, and it effectively exists to show that trans people are people, too. But it’s better made than those films, and it holds back on the sincerity, at least until the final minutes, when the impact will prove all the more effective. Indeed, the majority of “Tangerine” mimics the loose cannon, candy-colored, take-no-prisoners energy of its main star, Kitana Kiki
Trans actresses Mya Taylor, left, and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez play prostitutes dealing with a chaotic day in “Tangerine.” MAGNOLIA PICTURES
Rodriguez. She plays Sin-Dee, a West Hollywood trans prostitute who in the opening scene discovers her pimp/ boyfriend (James Ransone) is cheating on her. The action jumps between her pounding the street to find him and her bestie Alexandra (Mya Taylor), as well as a regular customer, Armenian cab driver Razmik (Karren Karagulian), trying to hide his yen for trans trysts from his traditional family. “Tangerine” looks like it was fun to make, and the fun actually translates over to the audience. At the same time, it’s not watered down for mass
consumption. Its characters are allowed to be abrasive, and the film is goofy, loud and, most glaringly, very, very filthy. Sin-Dee and Alexandra aren’t the safe, largely sexless characters seen in the likes of “Dallas Buyers Club,” and they aren’t played by nontrans performers like Jared Leto. You can’t show “Tangerine” to your Fox News grandma. You can, however, show it to your cool grandma, who will get a kick out of a film that posits a utopia where we allow those on the fringes to thrive without conforming, at least to society’s more boring traits. emily.laurence@metro.us
Jake Miller is known as the sensitive rapper. This is, after all, a guy whose first song that garnered major radio play (“A Million Lives”) is constructed of lyrics lifted straight from his fan mail and is about how his music comforted a fan with cancer and helped another deal with her brother’s death. But the 22-year-old, whose new EP “Rumors” came out yesterday, has recently switched gears, putting out a new single, “Dazed and Confused,” that’s essentially just a fun summer party song. “I’ve always been about putting out music with a message behind it, but I
well, just really drunk. “How do you know if you’re in love? That’s a great question,” Miller says, really thinking about it, perhaps with his own girlfriend in mind. “I think if you look at the person you’re with, and you see someone you can spend the rest of your life with, you’re best friends with and want to spend every second with, then you’re probably in love. If you’re at a party, and you can’t really see straight, that probably means that you drank too much, and you’re not in love.”
Bonding on the road Miller says his best friends are people he works with, like his drummer, tour manager, DJ and videographers. “I

feel like I’ve known them longer than my childhood friends because we travel every single day together [on tour],” he says. One childhood friend that he is still close with is Edgar Esteves, who directed his “Dazed and Confused” music video. “We came up with
[the video concept] together and just wanted to do a fun, abstract, weird video,” Miller says. “We had dancing fruits. We had my head floating in a refrigerator.” The video also features fellow teen heartthrob Austin Mahone, as well as rapper Travie McCoy, who has a verse in the song.
Back to basics While Miller is all for focusing on fun now, he has every intention of going back to getting deeper: “You always have to grow as an artist, and nothing
has stopped with the whole storytelling stuff,” he says. “I’m going to write about whatever I’m experiencing. My music is always going to be about me.”

The boat you want to be on Swimming is not the only way to enjoy the waters around NYC this summer. We found five cruises that go beyond mugging with Lady Liberty. EVA KIS

The Water Table
SailNewYork.com Going on an actual three-hour tour means there had better be something more than Gilligan’s antics to keep you entertained. Ventura’s 1919 sailing yacht is smaller than most ships and usually a pricey rental, but there are two less spendy ways to get out on the water with them: Friday night BYO booze and snacks cruises ($55) starting this week, and Alphabet City Beer Co.’s summer weekend craft brew sails ($79).
SpiritCruises.com If, like us, paddleboard yoga would mean more time treading water rather than posing, Yoga on the Water is back with three Saturday lunch cruises ($51.90) beginning this week. Rae Broderick of Strala, Tara Stiles’ yoga studio, leads the newbie-friendly sessions on the boat’s spacious outdoor deck, with activewear brand Athleta providing mats and gift bags for all, followed by a light meal. Sounds like a balanced afternoon to us.
ManhattanBySail.com Go ahead, give in to the urge to say, “Yarr, mateys!” as you board the old-school schooner Clipper City. Besides satisfying your basic pirate urges, Manhattan By Sail is always hosting themed cruises. This Friday, come dressed in your nautical best for a Shark Week fest, while other upcoming voyages include the elegant Moonlight & Music on the Hudson affair and burlesque cruises with Dances of Vice.
Artful.ly/constellation In the Hudson River about 50 miles north of the city is an island with a crumbling castle that looks straight out of “Game of Thrones.” Artist Melissa McGill created some real-life magic with “Constellation,” a light installation that projects this mysterious structure’s original design onto the night sky. Every Friday and Saturday through October, take a two-hour trip ($45) to the island, including a tour of Bannermen’s Castle.
TheWaterTableNYC.com You’ll have to leave your flippy-floppies at home to come aboard this World War II-era vessel, but a little dressing up is worth it to experience the outstanding New England menu — yes, a floating restaurant that serves more than microwaved crab cakes. Dinner cruises take place Thursday through Sunday ($50-$75). Though the scenery from Greenpoint to the Statue of Liberty is a bit industrial, every seat has an ocean view.

Three Icelandic highlights
1
Blue Lagoon These hot springs in a lava field are one of the island’s most popular attractions. The Blue Lagoon is only a 20-minute drive from the airport, and many people combine a visit here with their airport transfer.
The airline now operates flights out of 15 airports in the U.S. and Canada, from Anchorage to Washington, D.C. Many passengers are dipping their toes into Iceland, metaphorically speaking, to see what the island has to offer for a one-night stay — or even just a few hours, if timetables allow it. So what can you do in a day? Keflavik International Airport is an easy 45-minute drive from Reykjavik, with shuttle buses meeting flights and with taxis and rental cars also available. Reykjavik is smaller than most European capitals, with a population of only about 120,000, but it has plenty to offer. There are several museums, including the National Museum of Iceland, the Reykjavik Art Museum, the Vikin Maritime Museum and the Reykjavik Open Air Museum.
The city’s distinctive architecture includes the Hallgrimskirkja, which is the largest church in Iceland, completed in 1986 after 38 years of work. Its remarkable design is said to resemble an Icelandic lava flow. The equally remarkable modern architecture of the Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Centre is also worth seeing, in its setting by the waterfront. Reykjavik is a compact city that is easy to walk around and has a good variety of hotels, bars, shops and restaurants. Some of these serve a traditional Icelandic menu, which might include smoked puffin, marinated minke whale and smoked shag. Needless to say, the seafood is excellent — but Icelanders also have a liking for hot dogs! The most popular eating place on the island is the hot dog stand Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, which has been near Reykjavik Harbor since 1937. Be sure to join a tour of some kind that takes you out into the unique Icelandic landscape. It isn’t surprising that the country was chosen as a filming location for “Game of Thrones,” as the country definitely has an otherworldly feel to it. Nothing prepares you for Iceland. Classic horseshoe pattern balding, a flat tire across the waist and an inability to recover from a night of alcohol abuse are signs that you’re getting old. So is a declining skill set in football. There are lots of problems with targeting “over the hill” players in fantasy drafts. The worst is paying a premium for a player’s name even though their game isn’t what it once was. Heightened injury risk and potential for a reduced role are other troubling complications. Avoid these guys with one foot in the grave.
NBA first impressions These youngsters are tearing up Summer League: •
Aaron Gordon, PF, Magic — Showing he’s ready to leap past Channing Frye.
•
Myles Turner, C, Pacers — With Roy Hibbert gone, the defensiveminded Pacers will count on Turner.
•
Rodney Hood, SF, Jazz — It’s crowded on the wing in Utah, but Hood is miles ahead of the competition.
The artist formerly known as “Rowdy” Roddy White is now “Underneath Possession Target” Roddy White. It doesn’t quite have the same ring. White’s once indestructible body has failed him over the last two seasons and his effectiveness is waning sharply as well. Even when All-World “X” dominator Julio Jones missed a game last year, Harry Douglas got more targets from Matt Ryan. White, no longer a threat to defenses, will settle for a shallow role as Kyle Shanahan’s “Z” while watching Jones rack up all the big plays.
The Bell tolls
Manning your coffin Peyton Manning was a subaverage quarterback last season well before his Week 15 quad injury. The team saw it, reducing his responsibility in favor of a ground-based attack that averaged 29.2 running back carries per game over the final seven weeks. This offseason, run-centric play caller Gary Kubiak was brought in and the Broncos reportedly tried to trade Manning. Expect him to crumble down the stretch again this year (likely the final year of his career), meaning
Rowdy no more
we are better off waiting until the later rounds for a Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, Tony Romo or Eli Manning type.
Joique Bell has only been on the fantasy map for three seasons, but he’s 28 years old and coming off multiple surgeries to his lower body. Joique has also averaged under 4 yards per carry in each of the last two seasons, and the Lions used a secondround pick on explosive Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah. Bell isn’t going to fall off the face of the Earth, but a passing of the feature-back baton to Abdullah at some point during the season is likely.

NFL. Giants denied visit with Pierre-Paul Giants officials were not allowed to see Jason PierrePaul in the hospital this week after making the trip to South Florida. New York’s star defensive end suffered injuries to both of his hands after a fireworks accident last weekend. ESPN reported that Pierre-Paul suffered severe burns and possible nerve damage due to the accident but specifics
remain vague. According to ESPN, Giants officials never made it out of the waiting room to see Pierre-Paul in their visit. They reportedly did not ask “JPP” if they could visit him prior to their trip. It is likely that PierrePaul will play the 2015 season under his $14.8 million tender, unless the Giants withdraw it. Yankees, Mets with big weekend on tap MLB. Both New York teams will look to ďŹ nish strong before the All-Star break.
Mark Teixeira and the Yankees are back at Fenway Park for the ďŹ rst time since early May this weekend. / GETTY IMAGES
This weekend, the Mets host the Arizona Diamondbacks while the Yankees ship up to Boston to play the Red Sox. Both teams are looking for strong finishes to the first half of the season while continuing to battle for division leads. On Friday, the Mets send Noah Syndergaard (3-4, 3.38) to the mound to square off with Chase Anderson (4-2, 3.71). When the Mets faced Anderson on June 6 of this year they managed just one run, a solo shot off the bat of Juan Lagares. The Mets
Flipping the script The basement-dwelling Red Sox are actually the hottest team in the AL East right now. •
Boston is 7-3 in its last 10 games. The Yankees are 5-5 in their last 10.
•
The Yankees swept the Sox at Fenway in early May. They’re 4-2 against their rivals this season.
would collect eight hits against Anderson, though. Meanwhile, Syndergaard has lived up to the hype (at least at home), going 3-1 with a 1.89 ERA at Citi Field. Friday night’s Yankees/Red Sox matchup is
Michael Pineda (8-5, 3.79) versus Justin Masterson (32, 6.14). Pineda is among the league leaders in SO/BB ratio (8.08) but the Red Sox are one of the most patient teams in baseball, having struck out just 552 times and having walked just 271 times (second and sixth in baseball, respectively). Masterson looks hopelessly overmatched against Pineda; his BB/9inn ratio is 4.3 so far this season, and the Yankees should benefit as they are the fifth best team at taking free passes this year. On Saturday, the Mets turn to Matt Harvey (7-6, 3.11) while the Diamondbacks answer with Josh Collmenter (3-6, 4.89). The Mets crushed Collmenter in Arizona on June 7, amassing five runs off
nine hits (four home runs) in six innings. Collmenter has been coming out of the bullpen in his last few appearances for Arizona. Harvey was sharp against the D-backs on June 4, allowing just two runs (both homers) and striking out nine in six innings of work. Runs will be easy to come by in the Yankees/ Red Sox game on Saturday as Ivan Nova (1-2, 2.65) squares off against Clay Buchholz (7-6, 3.27). The Sox have crushed Nova in the past. In 79 total at-bats, the Boston roster is hitting a collective .342 with six home runs. Buchholz, meanwhile, has struggled against the Bombers. ROBERT CRISCOLA @ItsGood2BeKing sports@metro.us
